QUIT SMOK Why Smoking Is So Dangerous for Truckers — And How to Quit
FAST FACTS
• Long-haul truckers report cigarette smoking at a rate of 51%. • Type 2 diabetes, cancer, stroke and heart disease are all more prevalent in smokers versus non-smokers. If you ask people who smoke, chances are high that they will tell you they wish they’d never picked up the habit. Studies have taken place over the years that prove smoking is a contributor to heart disease, cancer, stroke and other serious health conditions. The problem is compounded for truck drivers. Here is why smoking can be hazardous for over-the-road professionals.
1. VEHICLE EXPLOSION We’ve already mentioned explosions. When a trucker is transporting flammable materials, they are already at risk. Smoking and driving, or smoking near the truck, obviously ups the ante when it comes to explosions. Many people aren’t aware that it’s not the liquid that burns, but the vapors. This goes for hazmat cargo as well as fuel. Federal regulations dictate that a hazmat driver smoke more than 25 feet away from their trucks. They are not permitted to smoke while driving, and they should never smoke while fueling up.

Smokers are more at risk for anxiety, depression and irritability. Smoking often makes people feel better for a moment, but the negative feelings come back. Not only that, but those who are addicted may feel jumpy and irritable when they miss a smoke. Stress and anxiety may be a natural part of a job that requires a person to meet deadlines. Add smoking to the mix, and generalized anxiety can worsen.
5. HEART DISEASE A person who is exposed to secondhand smoke or smokes regularly is at a greater risk for developing heart disease. They are also more likely to have a heart attack. Blood vessels are constricted by nicotine, and LDL levels are increased. All of this knowledge often has truckers wishing they could stop smoking. The serious health risks are enough to make anyone want to kick the habit. If you’ve found yourself ready to quit, but not sure how, here are some ideas.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTE

Many fear it will take a long time to see improvements in health and well-being, but the timel faster than most people realize. Health benefits begin in as little as an hour after the last ciga
FAST FACTS on QUITTING SMOKING:
• QUITTING SMOKING MEANS BREAKING THE CYCLE OF ADDICTION AND ESSENTIALLY REWIRING THE BRAIN TO STOP CRAVING NICOTINE. • TO BE SUCCESSFUL, SMOKERS THAT WANT TO QUIT NEED TO HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE TO BEAT CRAVINGS AND TRIGGERS. • THE BENEFITS OF QUITTING SMOKING BEGIN IN AS LITTLE AS 1 HOUR AFTER THE LAST CIGARETTE. • THE SOONER A SMOKER QUITS, THE FASTER THEY WILL REDUCE THEIR RISK OF CANCER, HEART AND LUNG DISEASE, AND OTHER CONDITIONS RELATED TO SMOKING.
Timeline:
The benefits are almost instant. As soon as a person stops smoking their body begins to recover in the following ways:
AFTER 1 HOUR
In as little as 20 minutes after the last cigarette is smoked, the heart rate drops and returns to normal. Blood pressure begins to drop, and circulation may start to improve.
AFTER 12 HOURS
Cigarettes contain a lot of known toxins including carbon monoxide, a gas present in cigarette smoke. This gas can be harmful or fatal in high doses and prevents oxygen from entering the lungs and blood. When inhaled in large doses in a short time, suffocation can occur from lack of oxygen. After just 12 hours without a cigarette, the body cleanses itself of the excess carbon monoxide from the cigarettes. The carbon monoxide level returns to normal, increasing the body’s oxygen levels.
AFTER 1 DAY
Just 1 day after quitting smoking, the risk of heart attack begins to decrease. Smoking raises the risk of developing coronary heart disease by lowering good cholesterol, which makes heart-healthy exercise harder to do. Smoking also raises blood pressure and increases blood clots, increasing the risk of stroke. In as little as 1 day after quitting smoking, a person’s blood pressure begins to drop, decreasing the risk of heart disease from smoking-induced high blood pressure. In this short time, a person’s oxygen levels will have risen, making physical activity and exercise easier to do, promoting heart-healthy habits.
AFTER 2 DAY
Smoking damages the nerve endings responsible for the senses of smell and taste. In as little as 2 days after quitting, a person may notice a heightened sense of smell and more vivid tastes as these nerves heal.

QUIT YOU CAN DO IT!
AFTER 3 DAY
3 days after quitting smoking, the nicotine levels in a person’s body are depleted. While it is healthier to have no nicotine in the body, this initial depletion can cause nicotine withdrawal. Around 3 days after quitting, most people will experience moodiness and irritability, severe headaches, and cravings as the body readjusts.
AFTER 1 MONTH
In as little as 1 month, a person’s lung function begins to improve. As the lungs heal and lung capacity improves, former smokers may notice less coughing and shortness of breath. Athletic endurance increases and former smokers may notice a renewed ability for cardiovascular activities, such as running and jumping.
AFTER 1-3 MONTH
For the next several months after quitting, circulation continues to improve.
AFTER 9 MONTH
Nine months after quitting, the lungs have significantly healed themselves. The delicate, hair-like structures inside the lungs known as cilia have recovered from the toll cigarette smoke took on them. These structures help push mucus out of the lungs and help fight infections. Around this time, many former smokers notice a decrease in the frequency of lung infections because the healed cilia can do their job more easily.
AFTER 1 YEAR
One year after quitting smoking, a person’s risk for coronary heart disease decreases by half. This risk will continue to drop past the 1-year mark.
AFTER 5 YEAR
Cigarettes contain many known toxins that cause the arteries and blood vessels to narrow. These same toxins also increase the likelihood of developing blood clots. After 5 years without smoking, the body has healed itself enough for the arteries and blood vessels to begin to widen again. This widening means the blood is less likely to clot, lowering the risk of stroke. The risk of stroke will continue to reduce over the next 10 years as the body heals more and more.
AFTER 10 YEAR
After 10 years, a person’s chances of developing lung cancer and dying from it are roughly cut in half compared with someone who continues to smoke. The likelihood of developing mouth, throat, or pancreatic cancer has significantly
reduced.
AFTER 15 YEAR
After 15 years of having quit smoking, the likelihood of developing coronary heart disease is the equivalent of a non-smoker. Similarly, the risk of developing pancreatic cancer has reduced to the same level as a non-smoker.
AFTER 20 YEAR
After 20 years, the risk of death from smoking-related causes, including both lung disease and cancer, drops to the level of a person who has never smoked in their life. Also, the risk of developing pancreatic cancer has reduced to that of someone who has never smoked.
nd death. When a person quits smoking, the body will start to naturally heal and regain the vitality of a non-smoker over ediately. Other effects, such as risks of developing lung cancer, heart disease, and lung disease, take years to drop down es risks and improves overall health, making quitting smoking an excellent choice for anyone who started the habit.

LOOK OUT! It’s SO important to do a good Pre-Trip inspection:
Take a close look at the images on the left and below, did you happen to spot anything peculiar? You may have noticed that the weld’s that attach the plate which hold the kingpin on this container chassis have failed, which in turn would cause it to fail completely as you hook to it or soon after you were to leave. One of our senior 710 drivers spotted this and forwarded these images to us in an effort to warn other drivers to this very dangerous issue so CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT THOROUGHLY, especially containers and their chassis. These pieces of equipment take a beating daily in the process of loading and unloading, plus they are hauled by every driver under the sun who may not be especially safety orientated like CACH Feeder Drivers. It’s not enough to just make sure your trailers properly hooked and that the container is secured and latched with pins in place, take a few minutes and eyeball as much as you can, if it doesn’t look right chances are it’s not............Be Careful Please!
PRE-TRIP Your Work Boots! YOUR FEET ARE VERY IMPORTANT. There are boots for construction workers, running shoes for runner, shoes for walking and there are shoes that are beneficial for truckers. When you’re behind a rig day and night, it’s important to have the right boots on.
Why? • COMFORT. Proper trucker boots are comfortable, and this means being able to withstand wear for 8 to 10 hours without aches or pains. • SAFETY. Trucker boots offer traction in the rain or snow where it’s easy to slip and fall. These shoes may also have toe safety built into the shoe to prevent potential injury to the person’s toes when loading and unloading. Steel toe caps are important as well as anti-static inner soles. • INJURIES. The right trucker boots will provide cushioning, slip-resistance and impact protection. Injuries are lessened with the right boots leading to less slips and falls, too. • RESISTANCE. The Governor’s Highway Safety Association claims that the number one priority is trucker safety. Slip and water resistance are important because slip resistance reduces the risks of falls. Water resistance reduces the risk of water entering the boot.
