A T N SA ! N O

Santa Says: always use a little critical thinking before working with equipment. Stretch and warm the muscles before each task. Working with heavy equipment demands our full attention!

don’t be a nutcracker: we know bad things can happen if we don’t focus on what were doing every step of the way. this is the time of the season for ice. thawing and freezing can occur from day to night. not looking before we step can be disastrous!

THE CORRECT WAY TO CONNECT THOSE AIRLINES

YES! It is a D.O.T. Violation for air-lines or the light cord to drag ( rest ) on anything especially the tractor deck, the “Hose Hangers” should be utilized to prevent your connections from becoming damaged or chafed from coming into contact with the tractor deck or those pesky bolts that stick off the side-frames which are notorious for grabbing and breaking your air-lines and power cords. If you are unsure as to how to adjust them stop by the Tractor shop or ask for help.

! T E G R O F DON’T

Make sure the swing doors on 53 foot trailers ( especially rail box’s ) are closed before getting underneath them to hook, these trailers require a lower stance to allow the swing doors to open and backing under them prematurely will result in damage to the doors including them being ripped off.

Make sure your Dolly handle locks in the cold weather, the grease used to lubricate the equipment stiffens up in the cold preventing a positive lock-up.

THIS TOO! Good!

Not Good!

stay frosty: working in the snow amplifies the risk of injury. how do we counter the increased danger and reduce the chance of getting hurt? making premeditated precise slower movements in winter conditions will get us back home safe...........stop – think – proceed!

Brushes have been provided for us at the Cactuses for snow removal, remove ice & snow from where you grab & step. Also, remember to plug your Tractor in when the weather turns cold, this is vital for the next Driver who uses the equipment, especially over the weekend.

Make sure, Deck Plate and Steps are clear of Ice & Snow! Your pin-puller is handy for helping clear them of snow & ice.

don’t crumble cookie: the upcoming weather months should be a concern for all of us. the conditions of the surface we’re walking on should effect the way we walk. stop – think – proceed! keep your body weight over your feet, take short footed steps with our hands out to your sides, think smart–move smart!

VSA AND TREAD DEPTH

TIONS OF REGULATIONS LEADING TO CONFUSION

RPRETATIONS OF THE FEDERAL REGULATIONS ON TRUCK TIRE AND WHEEL INSPECTION, E OF THE CONFUSION REGARDING MINIMUM TREAD DEPTH.

tration (FMCSA) regulations, the minimum tread depth for a steer tire is 4/32 of an inch on every major tread groove. If one spot be issued a citation. The thin decoupling groove at the shoulder, however, is not a major groove. It can theoretically be worn away he major grooves are 4/32 when measured anywhere on the tire and there are no other conditions that warrant a violation. These minimum tread depth is 2/32 of an inch in every major groove. It’s also important to note that the tread depth measurements ectors in the grooves.

Alliance (CVSA) has a completely different rule regarding the minimum tread depth on steer tires. re is less than 2/32 of an inch in two adjacent grooves, then the vehicle is placed out of service eel positions must have a tread depth of at least 1/32 when measured in any two ast 8 in. apart around the circumference of the tire or the vehicle is

A, citations under FMCSA are a certainty. The driver will be isd until the out-of-service violations are remedied, the vehicle cle with a steer tire that has a tread depth of 3/32 will be rvice. Likewise, if drive or trailer tires have a tread depth spots are not adjacent, the driver will be issued citations,

KICK-BUTT

In the New Year with a

Clean Routine!

Be prepared the night before on call assignments. ( Lunch, uniform, gas in your car etc. Start your day right. )

Get quality rest between shifts. ( dark room, ear plugs, cool room temperature, and speak to your family about the importance of getting your rest.)

Stick to the program. We all have gate times. Much like an airline. going to the locker room or having a conversa-

tion af ter your official start time will just work against you. Be ready to walk to your tractor and pre-trip at your start work.

Be crystal clear on where you are going. Have your run reviewed with a super visor if you are unsure. DO NOT ASSUME ANYTHING!

Work with a sense of urgency, but never cut corners in terms of safety. YOUR SAFETY IS NUMBER ONE PRIORITY! Phones are allowed, but there is a time and a place for them. They should not be used while pre or post

tripping, hooking or dropping, or anytime the vehicle is in motion on ups property, a customer’s property, or at a rail yard. This includes Bluetooth Headsets.

Stick to a routine. A routine is efficient and safe. A good routine will help you stay focused and help catch things you may have other wise missed.

If things aren’t going as planned, put yourself on delay; send an IVIS message, and contact dispatch or a super visor. DON’T SIT SILENT! Stay in communication with dispatch.

Your loads should be closed and ready. If they are not, put yourself on delay, ( TRAILER NOT READY DELAY ), and message dispatch as well as call. You must notify a dock super visor that you are waiting on the trailer and then wait inside by your door. DO NOT SIT IN YOUR TRACTOR!

If you are told that someone will call you back, and you don’t hear back in 15 minutes, call them back.

Once one the road, please follow the designated route. Again, should you encounter any unforeseen delay such as

road closures or inclement weather that may delay you from arriving on time, or making sort, CALL DISPATCH IMMEDIATELY!

DO NOT VIOLATE COMPANY HOURS OF SERVICE RULES! Mandatory 30 minute break before your 8th hour, no more than 11 hours of total drive time, and no more than 14 hours total on duty time per shif t. Punch on to punch out.

Christmas Quote: “I’m not just a whimsical figure who wears a charming suit and

affects a jolly demeanor. You know, I’m a symbol. I’m a symbol of the human ability to be able to suppress the selfish and hateful tendencies that rule the major part of our lives. If you can’t believe, if you can’t accept anything on faith, then you’re doomed for a life dominated by doubt.” –– Kris Kringle, Miracle on 34th Street.
