But How Do Semi-Truck Air Brakes Work?

Air brakes are certainly one of the most vital components of semi-trucks or, more formally, commercial motor vehicles.

The air brake system on semi-trucks uses compressed air to push the brake shoe lining into the drum creating friction that effectively slows the wheels.

Ever thought of how air slackens an 80,000-pound vehicle following a foot’s steady command?

Welcome to the wonderful world of air brakes.

Considering that these air-powered brakes are indispensable in keeping drivers and other road users safe, it is imperative to know how they work.

Read on to learn how air brake systems work, their components, and additional relevant information.

Understanding how a semi-truck air brake system works If you’ve ever driven a car or any other motor vehicle, you know that the vehicle slows down and eventually stops when you push the brake pedal towards the floor.

If you are wondering how your foot stops a 3,000-pound car traveling at high speeds, think of a scenario where the same foot stops a vehicle that can weigh 80,000 pounds.

Here is how the air-powered brake systems work.

How do the air brakes work on a semi-truck First off, the air compressor pressurizes air and pumps it into the air reservoirs, storage tanks located beneath the semi-truck and when the operator applies the brakes the pushrod then moves the slack adjusters to apply the brakes.

The air braking system is actuated when force is applied to the brake pedal.

When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the air from the reservoirs is supplied into the brake chambers through the valves.

The chambers move the pushrod, forcing down a piston, which moves the slack adjusters.

Slack adjusters convert the pushrod force into a cam rotational force, which rotates the S-cam, causing the rollers to rise and push the brake shoes towards and against the drum lining.

The brake shoe lining contacts the drum, creating friction and pressure, which in turn slows the wheel, eventually bringing the semi-tuck to a stop.

To continue rolling, the driver retracts their foot, releasing the brake pedal and allowing the delivered air to exhaust.

The S-cam rotates back to its original position, causing the return springs to pull brake shoes away from the brake drum. This eliminates the friction and slowdown effect.

Ideally, the three-valved air brake system uses air to transfer pressure from the brake pedal to the brake line. They are exceptionally reliable because air is an unlimited source.

Advantages of air brakes: Air brakes are incredibly reliable. Air is everywhere; hydraulic fluid is not. Since air is unlimited, the three-valved air-powered brake system keeps operating, with minimal maintenance required.

Air is freely available with unlimited supply: Unlike brake systems using hydraulics fluid, air brakes cannot run out of operating fluid. Minor leaks do not affect the air brake system.

The compressed air can be used in other accessories as well: The compressed air in the braking system is not only useful in ensuring a reliable braking system but also used in other accessory applications like air horns and seat adjusters, where hydraulics are not appropriate.

They offer a superior braking effect relative to other brakes.

Components of an air brake system

Below the semi-truck exterior lies a number of components that ensure the vehicle slows down when the brake pedal is pressed down. Here are the exclusive parts of the air brake system.

Air compressor

It builds up and maintains the air pressure required to operate the brakes and other air-powered accessories. It pumps air into the air reservoirs and is driven by the vehicle’s engine – when the engine is running, so is the compressor.

Air compressor governor

As the name suggests, this is a governing device that controls the compression pressure of the air that’s pumped to the air reservoir. It stops the compressor from pumping air when air pressure rises to the cut-out level.

Air reservoir (storage tanks)

This is a pressure-rated tank that stores compressed air.

Drain valves

These are valves in the air storage tanks that drain the air when the semi-truck isn’t in use.

Safety valve

This valve protects air reservoirs and rests of the system from becoming over-pressurized and bursting by evacuating the air from the system at 150 psi.

Brake pedal (foot valve)

This is the trigger that releases air from the storage tanks. It is a mechanism operated by the driver and actuates the brakes to stop the seme-truck.

Brake chambers

Also known as brake cylinders, these are containers that house the slack adjuster that moves the diaphragm or cam-mechanism. Essentially, it converts the compressed air pressure into a mechanical force and movement.

A push rod (piston)

This is a rod connecting the slack adjuster to the brake chamber.

Slack adjusters

These are arms that connect the pushrod to the brake S-cam. They help adjust the distance between brake shoes.

Brake S-cam

As the name suggests, this is an S-shaped cam that separates the brake shoes from the brake drums.

Brake shoe and drum

oe is a pad with a lining that causes friction against the brake drum; therefore, initiating the air break. The lining helps promote consistency.

Return spring

This is a compact yet strong spring that returns the brake shoes to an open position when the brake pedal is released.

Air dryer

This is a device used to remove moisture from the air coming from the atmosphere. It helps ward off possible condensation that could lead to brake failure.

Brake valve or triple valve

The triple valve helps ensure continuous release and building of pressure inside the brake lines and brake cylinder, depending on the brake pedal movement.

Disadvantages of air brakes:

They are costly!

The air compression results in moisture that requires air dryers to remove. This could result in higher maintenance costs Drivers are required to receive additional training and licensing to legally drive semi-trucks and other vehicles using an air brake system Operating vehicles using air brakes require special knowledge and skill

INCREASE YOUR FIBER INTAKE A cup of brewed coffee represents a contribution of up to 1.8 grams of fiber of the recommended intake of 20-38 grams. Another more recent study also showed coffee’s liver protecting benefits. Yet another study showed that both coffee and decaffeinated coffee lowered the liver enzyme levels of coffee drinkers. This study was published in the Hepatology Journal.

3. LOWERED RISK OF TYPE 2 DIABETES Those who consumed 6 or more cups per day had a 22% lower risk of diabetes. From the Archives of Internal Medicine. A recent review of research conducted by Harvard’s Dr. Frank Hu showed that the risk of type II diabetes decreases by 9% for each daily cup of coffee consumed. Decaf coffee decreased risk by 6% per cup.

4. LOWERED RISK OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE There is considerable evidence that caffeine may protect against Alzheimer’s disease. From the European Journal of Neurology. A recent study also isolated the compounds in roasted coffee that may be responsible for preventing the build-up of the brain plaque believed to cause the disease.

5. REDUCES SUICIDE RISK AND DEPRESSION A 10-year study of 86,000 female nurses shows a reduced risk of suicide in the coffee drinkers. From the Archives of Internal Medicine. Another study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health found that women who drink 4 or more cups of coffee were 20% less likely to suffer from depression.

6. PROTECTION AGAINST PARKINSON’S People with Parkinson’s disease are less likely to be smokers and coffee drinkers than their healthy siblings. Just make sure you don’t get lung cancer on the way. From the Archives of Neurology. Even newer research out of Sweden revealed that drinking coffee reduces the risk of Parkinson’s even when genetic factors come into play. Yet another study found that caffeine combined with EHT (a compound found in coffee beans) provided protective benefits to rats that were genetically predisposed to developing Parkinson’s.

7. COFFEE DRINKERS HAVE LESS RISK OF HEART DISEASE Korean researchers found that study participants who consumed 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day were less likely to show the beginning signs of heart disease. Other dietary factors should also be noted as Koreans typically have a different diet than do Westerners. A more recent study conducted in Brazil found that those that consume at least three cups of coffee a day tend to develop less calcification in their coronary arteries.

8. COFFEE DRINKERS HAVE STRONGER DNA. A study published in the European Journal of Nutrition showed that coffee drinkers have DNA with stronger integrity since the white blood cells of coffee drinkers had far less instance of spontaneous DNA strand breakage.

9. LOWER RISK OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. Recent research showed that at least 4 cups of coffee a day may help protect against the development and reoccurrence of MS. It is believed that the coffee prevents the neural inflammation that possibly leads to the disease developing.

10. COFFEE REDUCES COLORECTAL CANCER RISK. Even moderate consumption of coffee can reduce the odds of developing colorectal cancer by 26%. This protective benefit increases with more consumption.

It is the requirement for all drivers, both package and feeder, to wear a UPS approved reflective vest while working in the yard as part of their normal job duties. Water Safety In warm weather the water is a great place to stay cool and have fun. Please keep these tips in mind as you enjoy the water.

• DO learn to swim. If you like to have a good time doing water activities, being a strong swimmer is a must.

• DO take a friend along. Even though you may be a good swimmer, you never know when you may need help. Having friends around is safer and just more fun!

• DO know your limits. Watch out for the “too ’s ” — too tired, too cold, too far from safety, too much sun, too much hard activity.

• DO swim in supervised (watched ) areas only, and follow all signs and warnings.

• DO wear a life jacket when boating, jet skiing, water skiing, rafting, or fishing.

• DO stay alert to currents. They can change quickly! If you get caught in a strong current, DON ’T fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you have passed through it. Near piers, jetties (lines of big rocks ), small dams, and docks, the current gets unpredictable and could knock you around. If you find it hard to move around, head to shore. Learn to recognize and watch for dangerous waves and signs of rip currents — water that is a weird color, really choppy, foamy, or filled with pieces of stuff.

• DO keep an eye on the weather. If you spot bad weather (dark clouds, lighting ), pack up and take the fun inside.

• DON ’T mess around in the water. Pushing or dunking your friends can get easily out of hand.

• DON ’T dive into shallow water. If you don’t know how deep the water is, DON ’T dive.

• DON ’T float where you can ’t swim. Keep checking to see if the water is too deep, or if you are too far away from the shore or the poolside.
