But How Do Semi-Truck Air Brakes Work?
First off, the air compressor pressurizes air and pumps it into the air reservoirs, storage tanks located beneath the semi-truck and when the operator applies the brakes the pushrod then moves the slack adjusters to apply the brakes.
The brake shoe lining contacts the drum, creating friction and pressure, which in turn slows the wheel, eventually bringing the semi-tuck to a stop.
The S-cam rotates back to its original position, causing the return springs to pull brake shoes away from the brake drum. Brake shoe and drum
As the name suggests, this is a governing device that controls the compression pressure of the air that’s pumped to the air reservoir. It stops the compressor from pumping air when air pressure rises to the cut-out level.
Return spring
This is a device used to remove moisture from the air coming from the atmosphere. It helps ward off possible condensation that could lead to brake failure.
Brake chambers Also known as brake cylinders, these are containers that house the slack adjuster that moves the diaphragm or cam-mechanism. Essentially, it converts the compressed air pressure into a mechanical force and movement.

• DO stay alert to currents. They can change quickly! If you get caught in a strong current, DON ’T fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you have passed through it. Near piers, jetties (lines of big rocks ), small dams, and docks, the current gets unpredictable and could knock you around. If you find it hard to move around, head to shore. Learn to recognize and watch for dangerous waves and signs of rip currents — water that is a weird color, really choppy, foamy, or filled with pieces of stuff.
• DON ’T dive into shallow water. If you don’t know how deep the water is, DON ’T dive.
• DON ’T mess around in the water. Pushing or dunking your friends can get easily out of hand.
