Fresh on the SCENE

Lively restaurant with modern flavours

If you’re craving something vibrant and fresh to eat for lunch or dinner this summer, Traralgon’s new restaurant, Viet Kitchen, is serving up some classic and modern Vietnamese dishes that are sure to satisfy!

Opening in September 2024, Viet Kitchen has become a standout addition to Traralgon’s dining scene, offering a fresh, modern take on Vietnamese cuisine.

This new restaurant is the second location for owner Kevin Nguyen, who first brought his passion for Vietnamese food to Sale in 2020.

THE LEAF RESTAURANT & BAR

Stand-out Sri Lankan in Traralgon.

If you’re on the hunt for something new in Traralgon, look no further than The Leaf. This family-run establishment, opened in July 2024, offers a delightful introduction to the rich flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine. Owners Suresh and Surechi have brought a piece of their Sri Lankan heritage to the heart of Latrobe City, weaving the vibrant flavours and cherished recipes of their upbringing into every dish.

A brand-new brunch favourite

Opening its doors in August 2024, Jay Dee’s has quickly become a beloved addition to Latrobe City’s café scene. Founded by Laura and Jamie, this new venture brings their signature hospitality and top-notch coffee to Morwell. This hospitality power couple have combined their extensive experience and passion to create a cosy, community-driven cafe that serves high quality food, coffee and service!

Discover three exciting new restaurants in Morwell and Traralgon, offering unique flavours, vibrant atmospheres, and unforgettable dining experiences.

Kevin’s journey into the restaurant world began in Melbourne in 2013, where a job in a Vietnamese eatery ignited a passion for cooking and hospitality.

“I came to Australia with very little knowledge about cooking, but working in a restaurant showed me how rewarding it could be,” he shares.

More than 10 years on, Viet Kitchen has established itself as a Gippsland favourite, drawing both locals and visitors back for its unforgettable flavours.

“We’ve always wanted to share our culture and food with the community,” says Surechi, reflecting on their long-held dream of opening a restaurant.

After years of searching for the right opportunity, the couple took over the former Dark Horse location and brought their vision to life.

The menu is a feast of authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, from fragrant rice dishes to mouthwatering curries. With the region’s growing diversity, locals have embraced the restaurant with open arms. “We were nervous at first, but the response has been overwhelming,” Surechi says, noting the five-star reviews flooding in.

Newcomers may worry about spice, but The Leaf caters to all palates, offering flavourful dishes without excessive heat—

The idea for Jay Dee’s came together on a whim when Jamie spotted a familiar, available space on Hazelwood Road. With little fanfare, the café opened its doors, quickly attracting a loyal following thanks to word of mouth and the curiosity of locals.

"People just wanted to try something different… We've created regulars. We're confident in our coffee and our food, and it’s good to see those people giving feedback and coming back every day,” Laura shared.

Their menu features crowd favourites like smashed avocado and a bacon and egg roll. They also explore international flavours, serving Japanese fried chicken, American-style

Unlike traditional Vietnamese restaurants, Viet Kitchen offers more than just pho and rice paper rolls. The menu features Asian tapas and street food-inspired dishes alongside vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, catering to a variety of dietary requirements.

Set in a stylish, light-filled space, the restaurant has an invigorating atmosphere, with the delightful aromas of fragrant herbs and citrus filling the air. It’s a place where Kevin aims to deliver not just meals but memorable dining experiences. “We want customers to enjoy great food in a fresh and inviting setting,” he said.

though spice can always be added upon request. A musttry is their popular seafood boat, a fresh combination of prawns, squid, and crab served with a special fried rice and vegetables.

The Leaf also hosts unique events, such as an all-you-caneat street food buffet on Fridays and a Sri Lankan high tea on Tuesdays, making it the perfect spot for family gatherings or a casual meal with friends.

Whether you’re drawn by the aroma of spices or the promise of a hearty, soul-satisfying meal, this family-run restaurant is ready to welcome you! Come for the food, stay for the experience, and leave with a new favourite spot to share with friends and family.

burgers, and Vietnamese classics like bánh mì.

Their approach is simple yet thoughtful, emphasising local produce and seasonal ingredients.

Jamie is passionate about preparing everything from scratch, which means no pre-made sauces or jars — just fresh flavours crafted with care.

Although Jay Dee’s is primarily a breakfast and lunch spot, they’re hoping to expand into evening hours and introduce a dinner menu with small plates and drinks. “Our goal is to make Jay Dee’s a spot where everyone feels welcome,” said Jamie. Whether it’s for coffee, a satisfying brunch, or a lunch with friends, Jay Dee’s is a fresh, authentic addition to Latrobe City’s growing food landscape — a must-try.

VIVA SHOES

Did you know your favourite Morwell shoe shop has been open for 20 years?

Viva Shoes in Morwell was opened by Sandra McPhie in 2004 and moved to its current location in 2006, when the business grew.

The shop sells popular and high-quality shoe brands such as Django and Juliette, EOS and Mollini. They’ve also got you covered for leather handbags and accessories.

Sandra says the store has a lot of regular customers, with people often travelling through from places like Bairnsdale and stopping by.

“I’ve got great customers and a good support network that supported us along the whole way, so that’s what got me through.”

Sandra started out her career in another local shoe shop, when her husband suggested she should open her own shoe shop, as there wasn’t one in Morwell at the time.

“He said it's time you open your own shoe shop. You can do it. And I did - rang up suppliers, found a shop to rent, and after two years, when my business grew, I purchased my shop.”

“Morwell is a central location and people have got a great sense of community here. People like to shop local.”

Sandra manages to put on a few impressive sales each year – who can say no to a good shoe sale!? Keep an eye out for boxing day sales, and the regular buy one get one half price sale.

Sandra also works alongside her sister Paula, make sure to say hi to them next time you’re in Commercial Road!

Stories of Business Su

Discover the vibrant business spirit of Latrobe City as we showcase a thriving new venture and a time-tested local favourite.

A short history of the Viva Shoes building

Before Viva Shoes was operating, store number 182 Commercial Road Morwell had a colourful history, with everything from grocers to auto parts sellers operating in the space.

When the store first opened, in the 1910s, Rowell & Sons ran a tailoring business and in 1925 G. Church had a grocery business there. The store was later sold to other grocers including Oliver Bros. and later Ted Nash until the shop was purchased by Cox Bros. in 1958. In 1967, Dunlop & Son opened a butcher’s shop which operated until 1990. Klassic Auto Parts opened in 1991 and it was then Valley Pawn Brokers, before it became Viva Shoes. Many may remember the history of this well-known shop and it’s great to see how far it’s come!

We're seeing this trend that people are going back into shops, because they want to feel and try on

GROUNDED ON HOTHAM

Whilst some businesses have a long history in Latrobe City, others have just freshly opened.

Grounded on Hotham has only been open since October, but already they have a loyal customer base and a great reputation.

Co-owners Shaun Barnes and Lauren Hollands have worked together for nearly 10 years at different hospitality venues (so you know their food and coffee is going to be good).

Many locals will remember Shaun for previously co-owning the well-loved Three Little Birds Café in Traralgon.

“The reception [to Grounded on Hotham] has been great. Because we’ve been in the industry for so long, so we’ve got a following.”

The pair hit the ground running, having already catered a major event, The Morwell Bowling Club Derby Day at Traralgon. They also recently catered for the Traralgon Cup.

Grounded on Hotham offers all day breakfast and a few lunch items, seven days a week. They also offer excellent coffeehot and cold drinks and a range of takeaway items such as toasties and sweet treats.

“We always said that if we got the chance, we would open a business together.”

If you’re looking for a modern function space, Grounded on Hotham might have you covered! In the future, the team will look at hosting night functions, hopefully some weddings, engagement parties and birthdays. Keep your eyes peeled on their social media for more information! (And to check out their delicious offerings.)

“Thanks to everyone for their support so far. We look forward to seeing everyone again.”

Grounded on Hotham is open Monday - Friday 6:30am2pm and Saturday and Sunday 7am-12pm.

difficult to find the time to develop the brand. Brandon was working full time at Hazelwood Power Station, and when it closed, they made the decision to launch the brand.

“Nikkia has aways had a passion for colour and creativity, which she expressed for many years working as a professional makeup artist. Nikkia was always mixing products from different brands to achieve the perfect look for her clients. In doing so, she identified gaps in the market and the idea of creating her own products followed shortly after.”

Nikkia and Brandon are Latrobe City locals and believe growing up in a small country town has given them a solid grounding and appreciation for hard work.

“Latrobe City is home to us and all our friends and family are here. We wouldn’t have been able to create and grow our business without their incredible support.”

The pair have big dreams for the brand “our biggest goal over the next couple of years is to be available in most major retailers throughout Australia and the USA.”

“Some women tell me they have lost their confidence in terms of what they think they should look like, and if I can aid them into feeling a bit special, well, I've done my job.”

Jaz Flowers is the makeup brand behind Jaz Flowers herself. Jaz has a background in musical theatre, appearing in shows like Hairspray and Hot Shoe Shuffle. She also opened Jaz Flowers Performing Arts Centre in 2017 which was hugely popular until it was unfortunately affected by COVID-19.

So how did the lipsticks come to life? After a suggestion from friend and well-known makeup artist and business owner, Alarna Bell, the idea for a makeup brand was born. Jaz is well-known for her quirky catch phrases like “blend your edges” and the natural progression for this phrase was a line of lip products.

“I think popping on a lip can change your whole day.”

Jaz has some great advice for aspiring business owners and says to “just give it a crack. If you can't get yourself into trouble, then give it a go.”

When talking about why Jaz calls Latrobe City home, she says “I've lived overseas. I've lived in every state in Australia, performing and doing bits and pieces. And every time I do that, all I ever want to do is come home. So, there's something grounding about the Valley. It's a great place to be, it's home.”

“I'm just a country girl from Morwell who's just stumbled upon this social media scene and has been fortunate enough to create a brand that's working. I'm just flying by the seat of my pants and just kind of seeing what's going on,” said Jaz.

If you don’t know where to start when purchasing from Jaz, her personal favourite lippy is High Kicks 4U, a warm nude that she wears all the time and a bit of a crowd favourite.

If you’re in the market for a new blush or highlight, Jaz will be launching a new collection soon!

CURATE & STYLE

The mission behind Curate and Style is to help women rediscover their personal style and build wardrobes that not only look great but work effortlessly for their everyday lives.

Owner and founder, Jess Ryan has been named an awardwinning stylist two years in a row by the Australian Style Institute.

If you’re not already following Curate and Style on social media (38,300 people are on Instagram!) the business has heaps to offer including their signature styling program Wardrobe with Intention™️, online C&S Private Shopping Channel© for shopping education and guidance, and seasonal style Look-Books known as Effortless Outfits© to inspire daily dressing ideas using your existing wardrobe.

“What we choose to wear has a proven psychological impact on our well-being, sense of self, confidence, and even our performance. Fashion gave me the gift of confidence.”

Jess started out her career in fashion in her teens, working at Mid Valley, Morwell and local fashion boutiques, learning the basics of style.

“Those humble beginnings, along with guidance from incredible managers and mentors, played a huge part in shaping who I am today. The opportunities I found in Latrobe laid the foundation for my career, and I’m incredibly grateful for them. I truly don’t think I’d be where I am today without that start.”

Home is where the heart is, and for me, that’s here in Latrobe. As a mum of two, I love raising my children here—we have access to great schools, facilities, and a strong sense of community. It’s the perfect balance of a peaceful lifestyle with everything you need close by.

Ryan, Curate & Style

Curate and Style was bought to life when Jess herself completely lost her sense of style, even with all the knowledge she’d gained in the fashion industry. This experience, along with the identity loss she felt in early motherhood, became the true catalyst for turning Curate and Style into a real business.

“There are plenty of capsule wardrobe concepts out there, but many are cookie-cutter, monochromatic, and frankly, boring that devoid you of that magic sense of style individuality. I wanted to unlock the secret to creating a functional capsule wardrobe while still embracing the joy of dressing authentically and in alignment with who you are—and I’ve done just that.”

If you’re struggling with feeling inspired by your wardrobe, check out the Curate and Style website or follow them on social media for styling tips and tricks!

RENTED STYLE

For a sustainable and affordable alternative to fast fashion, Rented Style has you covered!

Rented Style is a dress hire boutique with a difference, operating since August 2020. Rented Style believes in size diversity and offers designer dress hire in sizes 6-20.

The store was opened by Brittany, who at the time had recently studied at the Australian Style Institute and became a certified fashion stylist. During the course she learnt about the fashion industry and it inspired her to take the leap and open her own store.

“When starting Rented Style, I wanted to do something a little different than other hire stores so Rented Style also offers a range of retail accessory labels which can be purchased like a standard retail store,” said Brittany. You can be sure you won’t be wearing the same thing as anyone else with Rented Style! Brittany keeps a local event register to make sure no one will be wearing the same dress from the store to the same event.

Rented Style started out as a store in Seymour Street Arcade in Traralgon and has since moved to a Richmond store and a studio by appointment only in Traralgon.

“Rented Style is an official stockist for the Gippsland region, with over 15 designer labels on offer.”

Rented Style operates like a standard retail store and gets brand new clothing styles from stockists, nothing is second-hand or out of season stock.

Renting from Rented Style is easy! The standard hire period is four days, and people can either pick up from the store or opt for express post and return the item in the same method. You don’t even have to do the cleaning up! All pieces are professionally dry cleaned, which is included in the hire fee.

Keen to learn more or hire a dress for your next event? Check out Rented Style’s website for all the information on how to hire and opening hours.
