Sim City Golf opened up as part of Stadium 34 in the town of Moe in June 2022. The space is available for work functions, parties and anyone who wants to try their hand at golf. Matt, the Managing Director of Stadium 34, said the idea of an indoor golf stadium came to him during the pandemic. “During that time, there was very minimal things we could do and golf was one of the only sports to play outside and in the open,” Matt said. “I bought a set of golf clubs because I wanted to do something.”

“What the panademic did do for us as a business is give us time to consider where we are going to go coming out and helped us restructure our plans.” “I looked at some space we had in the facility and thought this space could work well for indoor golf,” Matt said. Matt also said golf is attracting a younger demographic of people across Latrobe as a means of entertainment and socialising. “What’s great about the facilities on offer at Sim City Golf is that anyone can have a go! There’s a bar to relax with friends afterwards and there’s no pressure to be the best.” Matt hopes the new skating facility and youth precinct will also help Moe thrive. “It’s good to see Moe thriving a bit more and there’s certainly a lot on offer here,” Matt said. “There’s more businesses and facilities opening up and it’s great to see people getting more involved in sports such as golf.”

TRANSFORMED

Making a showstopping debut, Moe’s newly upgraded state-of-the-art community hub creates a dynamic space for all. It’s been an exciting time for the town of Moe, with the final stages of the Moe Revitalisation Project unveiled to the community. Latrobe City Council was pleased to showcase the bustling youth precinct in September as part of the project, which transformed George Street in Moe. The various stages of the project have been long awaited and strongly and consistently advocated for by the community. Stage 2 of the Project included upgrading the old skate park located in the town’s central hub to a vibrant skating facility, complete with a refurbished 100 space carpark. Skating enthusiasts of all levels can now enjoy the large open bowl completed with lines and hips, accompanied with bright sports lighting. The youth precinct also includes a playground for younger children, barbeque, picnic amenities and

“The youth precinct is a fantastic central location for families to get together on weekends, because the location itself creates a safe space for all,” Bradley Law, Councillor for West Ward said.

For Diane Wilkinson, a long-time Moe resident and member of the Project Reference Group working in collaboration with Council, the open design of the space has created a revived space for the community. “There’s such a positive vibe and already I’ve seen so many people take advantage of the newly completed hub, especially on weekends,” she said. “My daughter and grandchildren were also here on the official opening day and had a great time.” “Through engaging in conversations with the wider community of Moe, we’ve worked together to help design a space that is inclusive for all.”

“The skating community is all about sharing knowledge and acceptance of everyone. There’s a lot of ‘we’ involved and looking out for your mates. That’s what helps us keep going.”

As for future goals, Pascal hopes more people from across the Latrobe Valley will try out skating in Moe and be part of something bigger.

“I think it’s slowly growing; we’ve had kids come down from Maffra, Sale and Warragul. They are coming from all over the place to skate at the “Skating is not just about doing fancy tricks. Candles with a cause that enhance the moment is what The King’s Candle encompasses.

The King’s Candle evolved from a story of resilience, strength and hope where the most beautiful flickers of light can appear throughout the hardest trails in life. The concept of King’s Candle derived from owner Cassie King’s cancer journey after being diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2019. Throughout Cassie’s treatment, she would light a candle each morning and discovered the varying differences between how candles are made.

“Once receiving news of my remission I wanted to not only give back but bring a point of difference by only using toxic free wax and the highest quality fragrance oils for a clean burning fragrance,” Cassie said. The King’s Candle offers a beautiful range of candle collections, including The Nostalgia Collection and The Signature Collection. “Our Signature collection is made of 400-gram coconut soy candles with a crackling wood wick that derived from my time fighting blood cancer,” Cassie said. “This is why two of these candles donate to Blood Cancer Australia and Breast Cancer Australia.” Be sure to check out the Nostalgia collection which is created from a series of stories from life, love and memories of Cassie’s youth. “I have transformed these nostalgic moments into rustic amber candles with a corked lid, in the hope that when you light them, I can transport you there too!”

Colourful jewellery for the joyful maximalist is Kate Billingley’s signature style.

Colourful and unique wheat bags is Kylie’s passion.

Blooms on the Hill is a flower farm situated in the hills of Budgeree in Central Gippsland, 15 minutes east of Boolarra.

Kate is a jewellery and textile designer who loves to create extravagantly colourful patterns on her versatile range of accessories – including tea towels, headscarves and earrings. After completing a Certificate IV in Design and Diploma in Surface Design, Kate wanted to venture into a creative business that would fuel her passion for art. “When I came back from studying, I thought about whether I wanted to work for somebody or work for myself,” Kate said. “Because I loved designing fabric, I thought about what else I could put patterns on.” Kate was inspired to create big and bold earrings that are lightweight specifically from polymer clay. “This material is ideal for earrings because it’s really lightweight. I wanted to make earrings that are big but not heavy, which is how it all came about!” “There are always happy little critters in my mother’s garden, and I draw so much inspiration from those memories and nature all around me,” Kate said.

Growing up in Gippsland, Kylie started making her own wheat bags after being diagnosed with endometriosis. Making wheat bags helped ease her pain and so her business started in 2018. Sourcing quirky local fabrics, Kylie creates fun designs that are often Australian-themed.

“Five years ago, I could have never imagined how popular the wheat bags had become,” Kylie said. “I stock all over Australia, and although it’s a lot of work, it’s fun. I love finding unique fabrics and giving people a reason to smile though colourful patterns,” Kylie said. While juggling her growing family and business, Kylie said market days is a time for her to have special interactions with happy customers. “It’s great to have that have one on one interaction and have something that I enjoy while working. It’s been an incredible journey so far.”

Specialising in dahlias with over 1800 plants, Blooms on the Hill also grow spring and summer annuals and perennials. Fresh blooms are available to pick up on farm, from farmers markets and local delivery. Amber, owner of Blooms on the Hill, has a degree in writing and photography, a Certificate II & Diploma in Agriculture, and also studied floristry at floral art school. “This is my third season doing Blooms on the Hill, which started in 2020,” Amber said. Amber started Blooms on the Hill after being inspired by a Pinterest photo online of full buckets of dahlias. “I then started growing my own dahlias on our farm, there was so many blooming that I just started making bouquets,” Amber said. Blooms on the Hill also runs workshops around cut flowers gardening, growing, harvesting and arranging with dahlias – workshops creating bouquets. “We also offer days of when people can come visit the farm, let loose in the paddock, and cut as many flowers as they like!”

Midway through 2020, Taylah quit her part-time job to pursue her dreams. She now works full-time for herself and hasn’t looked back. She currently has over 68,000 followers on her Youtube channel detailing how she preps for market days and other creative vlogs. “I just bought my home after growing my brand on social media channels, including Instagram – which has recently hit over 106,000 followers!” Taylah said. “During market days around Gippsland, it’s so exciting to see people I know by face and name at those events come to see me and check out all the accessories on offer.” When asked about her greatest inspiration, Taylah said; “I really just had more motivation than inspiration to succeed. I wanted to do something that I love and be happy while working. Doing this is not just about making scrunchies, it’s about inspiring other people to create things and do what they love too.”

“We use a huge range of wood but our favourite would probably be Jarrah and Huon Pine from Tasmania,” Alysha from R&A Handcrafts said. R&A Handcrafts has now expanded to creating a wide range of handmade crafts such as jewellery, pens and ornaments. “We’ve now evolved to working with resin and macrame and even tumble our own crystals!” Alysha said. The community spirit is the best part of market days for the duo. “It feels nice to be part of the community during market days and chatting with people – this is the spirit of local markets.”

PADDY BLACKSMITH Paddy McKenzie has vast experience in Blacksmithing and various light and heavy metal work skills.

“I create items made of recycled steel and scrap metal and take them around to markets,” Paddy said. “I always try and get around to local markets as much as I can!”

“I started baking for family and friends and just kind of started from there – it got really busy really quickly.” “I wasn’t really looking to get into cakes or cookies, but it was just something I did while my daughters were napping. Now that they are a little bit older, I’ve started doing wedding expos in Melbourne as well,” Kim said. Kim also attends many markets around the region, where her sugar cookies and brownies quite often sell out very quickly. “I am starting to lean more into our signature cookies which are our sell out desserts that we bring to local markets and events! They sell out every time we bake them and are about to ship them Australia-wide.” Limited edition signature cookies create an unforgettable dessert experience for all!

Simple yet delicious!

With a treasure trove of mouth-watering marinades and sauces, The Marinade Man turns ordinary meals into extraordinary feasts.

Calm Within Foods is a range of granolas that are a deliciously crunchy blend of real nuts, seeds, and quinoa that make a healthy snack for the whole family.

A scrumptious lineup of 26 unique marinade flavours and three speciality rubs elevates customers grilling game to new heights.

Every granola is packed with nutrients that make for a cracking brekky, dessert or straight-out-of-the-bag snack.

Owner Chris Papanikolaou started experimenting with flavours after two years of development and trail testing.

Jo, owner of Calm Within Foods, said the idea of the brand came after struggling to find a breakfast meal that suited her needs.

“What started off as a need to replace the marinade at our local chicken shop turned into a passion that I love doing,” Chris said.

“It was really difficult to find a healthy breakfast meal that didn’t contain oats and is gluten free,” Jo said. A scrumptious range of dairy free, gluten free and vegan granola recipes are available from Calm Within Foods. Jo uses coconut oil and maple or rice malt syrup as the primary liquids in her recipes, as well as nuts and seeds.

The Marinade Man’s full range of flavours are locally made in Gippsland, something Chris finds important. All the flavours are gluten free, with vegan and vegetarian options available. Growing up in Latrobe City and helping out with the family business in Manny’s Market, Chris discovered his passion for marinades while on the job.

“Many of my customers love the cranberry and coconut flavour the most, which is available at The Daily Café in Morwell,” Jo said.

“Experimenting with flavours and seeing people’s faces light up for the first time they’ve tried the marinades is something I find really rewarding.”

Organic granola flavours available also include fig & walnut, original, and grain-free – including low FODMAP varieties.

Chris also sells to businesses wholesale as well to individual customers around the region. “I hope to see many families sitting across the table enjoying feasts together. That’s my biggest aspiration for The Marinade Man.”

AN ICONIC BUILDING

REVITALISED

The Redevelopment of Kernot Hall

Take a walk down memory lane as Councillor Graeme Middlemiss discusses the evolution of Kernot Hall over the years and its recent transformation.

The doors of the newly refurbished Kernot Hall are open to the community, showcasing impressive upgrades to the much-loved centre in Morwell! First constructed in 1980, the iconic building has hosted many events over its 43 years – including concerts, debutante balls, expeditions, performances and more. Latrobe City Council revealed Stage 1 of the Kernot Hall Redevelopment project in late October, which incorporated key functionality upgrades and amenities to the building. Acoustic treatment to the main hall, construction of new meeting rooms, connection from kitchen to foyer, back of house accessible ramp, and inclusive access to the stage are some of the refurbishments made to the venue. The modern upgrades and reinvigoration of the space is designed to attract a new generation of hall users, which is identified in the Latrobe Convention Centre Business Case. The redevelopment started in December last year and was completed in early September by the local contractor, Langden Constructions. Pressed veneer timber finishes were accompanied throughout the hall, creating a sleek and elegant look inside the building. Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, a life-long Latrobe City local who has a strong connection to Kernot Hall, said the upgrades are a wonderful way to commemorate the hall that’s held many special events over the years. “Back in the 1960’s in Yallourn, there was a hall that was named after Charles Kernot, super former intendent of the SEC (original State Electricity Commission of Victoria).”

PAGE 14

The town of Yallourn was demolished in 1968, but before then it was the bustling community centre which held many balls and community events in the area. “In Yallourn, Kernot Hall was a town hall effectively,” the current Councillor of Central Ward said. “Right beside the flat floor town hall, initially called the Centre Hall, there was a much bigger flat floor auditorium with a stage and a great venue for many balls.” “The original Kernot Hall was probably the best venue in the Valley at the time” The two-times Mayor of Latrobe City discussed the evolution of the community centre over the years. “Kernot Hall was then built in Morwell around 1980. It became our biggest flat-floor venue for balls, and concerts and Eisteddfods. Back in those days, Kernot Hall was an ultra-modern state-of-the-art venue.” Councillor Middlemiss, who explained the original brick work shade was called Clifton Cremes, which at the time was aesthetically pleasing, but also drawbacks in terms of the acoustics over time.

“Halfway through the life of Kernot Hall in Morwell, Council commenced plans to redesign the interior to improve the acoustics.” “The architects also designed some timber treatment in the ceiling and walls, and new carpet around the entrance areas also lifts the place.” This year, 43 years later, Kernot Hall was getting tired and dated in its décor. Kernot Hall is now a much more striking hall – ready for the next generation of events to service the community of Latrobe City. “We’ve added meeting rooms to the side and extra change rooms. This is especially useful when the Eisteddfods are on.” Community feedback since the redevelopment opening in September has been positive, Councillor Middlemiss said. “I haven’t come across anybody who isn’t very impressed with the long overdue lift.” “Kernot Hall is very much a part of the fabric of the Latrobe Valley community and it’s good to see it’s back, better than ever.”

“The original Kernot Hall was probably the best venue in the Valley at the time.” Cr. Graeme Middlemiss

A walk down memory lane

Did you know that Kernot Hall has a long history in Latrobe City? Let’s take a look at some of the changes and developments made to the beloved community hall over the years.

“Kernot Hall was then built in Morwell around Many might not know that the very first Kernot Hall was a 1980. It became prominent landmark in Yallourn. It replaced the old Yallourn our biggest flatLibrary, which served as Latrobe City’s regional headquarters floor venue for before it was taken over by SEC balls, and concerts Chairman, W.H Connelly. The original design of the Yallourn and Eisteddfods. Kernot Hall incorporated the old Fire Brigade Hall, which Back in those days, was spruced up and used as Kernot Hall was the common foyer with a new hall. There was a fully equipped an ultra-modern kitchen as well as a stage and dancefloor that was used state-of-the-art extensively for balls. venue.” During its time in Yallourn, Kernot Hall was hired by many local community organisations for cabaret balls, exhibitions, and public meetings. It was demolished in early 1987.

The new Kernot Hall was opened at the new Civic Centre site as a replacement for the original hall from Yallourn. It was named after Charles Kernot, C.H Kernot, Construction Engineer and later Chief Engineer of the former SEC.
