TRADITIONAL OWNERS OF LATROBE CITY AND WELLINGTON SHIRE The Gunaikurnai nation are the Traditional Owners of Latrobe City and Wellington Shire. Today there are approximately 3000 Gunaikurnai people across the region, and their traditional lands cover the coastal and inland areas of Gippsland to the southern slopes of the Victorian Alps.

The Gunaikurnai nation is made up of five major clans. These are the Brabralung Clan in Central Gippsland, Brataulung Clan in South Gippsland, Krauatungalung Clan near the Snowy River, Tatungalung Clan near Lakes Entrance and the Brayakaulung (Braiakaulung) Clan whose traditional territory covers the Latrobe City municipality.

We acknowledge and respect the special contributions made to our community by the Traditional Owners.

We appreciate Traditional Owner representation on Council’s committees and groups.

8AM -10AM There’s no shortage of breakfast options in Latrobe City. Opt for a leisurely brunch, or grab a coffee on the go and check out a local market on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month.

10AM Follow the Princes Highway to Morwell and browse the Latrobe Regional Gallery and discover the thousands of colourful roses at the Morwell Centenary Rose Garden.

For the kids there are trampolines, climbing walls, ropes course, mini golf, play grounds, bike paths…the list is endless.

SATURDAY LUNCH 12PM Stop at the Gippsland Immigration Park and Wall of Recognition, search the names of immigrants to Gippsland and walk the lake to journey through Gippsland’s history. Make the most of the BBQ and picnic facilities. There’s a playground for the kids too.

Dine in style at Narkoojee Winery, offering cellar door, award winning wines, restaurant, and impressive views.

Shop up a storm in Traralgon where you will find boutique stores and major retailers all conveniently located within the CBD.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at one of our choice cafes or bakeries in the town centre, and of course hunt for that elusive amazing coffee.

Step back in time and learn the history of the Latrobe Valley power industry at the Powerworks Museum in Morwell or experience the 1800s at Old Gippstown in Moe.

10AM

4PM Head East to Rosedale and enjoy a quick stop at this town known for its cafe culture and quirky shops.

Jump aboard the historic Rubeena and head back in time with Captain Alan as you work your way down the port, hear about the history of the area, the waterways and find some wildlife as you sail past. View the historic Swing Bridge from the waterway and marvel at the architectural masterpiece.

12PM

Enjoy a wander around the town with playgrounds for the kids to enjoy and a life size statue of the famous racehorse, Patrobus.

Stop by the Port of Sale Wellington Centre and immerse yourself in culture with the Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale Library and many other great spaces for the whole family to enjoy.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON

As you enter Sale, you’ll find endless possibilities to enjoy. From the historic Swing Bridge (just outside of town), the amazing Port of Sale with waterbirds galore to admire or the Sale Botanic Gardens to meander through (there’s plenty of space for the children to run around and enjoy here too).

7PM Stop by one of the many pubs or restaurants to sample some of the regions best produce and meals you can find.

8:30PM Head to one of the local bars to grab a drink and hear some of our great local musicians.

11PM Rest your head at one of our choice hotels or motels to recharge for another full day ahead!

SUNDAY MORNING 7AM Get out in nature by visiting the Lake Guthridge precinct and taking a walk around our inland lake with fitness circuit, fountain and play equipment for the children along the way.

1PM Grab a quick bite to eat while overlooking the Port of Sale at either Portside Food & Wine or The Dock Espresso Bar.

2PM Jump in the car and head towards Maffra and experience automotive history at the awardwinning Gippsland Vehicle Collection. The team at the Collection pride themselves on a stunning rotating display of motor vehicles, motorbikes, push bikes, horse drawn vehicles and much more.

3PM Stretch your legs before hitting the road at the Maffra Wetlands, a haven to migratory birds.

The Wetlands is a great short walk with an abundance of flora and fauna for you to take in.

4PM Travel the C105 and enjoy the wide-open vistas of the Country Drive. As you work your way back towards home, you’ll find many great options to grab a meal and wind down from this great weekend!

SHAKESPEARE ON THE RIVER FESTIVAL The Shakespeare on the River Festival is held annually to coincide with the great bards’ birthday. Hosted throughout the town of Stratford this festival focuses on showcasing community, professional theatre and the broader arts community in Central Gippsland.

The Festival is held April/May each year and brings a great range of performances, stories and the ever-popular village faire. Centred around the historic Courthouse Theatre and Mechanics Hall the festival has something that will suit every taste in production.

Originally formed back in 1991, Shakespeare on the River has undergone many changes, with each year showcasing a different theme relating to the works of William Shakespeare.

It has grown to include several different workshops, performances and events from a variety of companies.

The Festival has grown to include over 20 different events being performed over a two-and-a-half-week period. The people of Stratford, The Festival management team, the best artists from around the region, and guest Melbourne and Sydney based professional companies will take you on a culturally engaging journey back in time.

The major highlight of the Festival is the Village Faire and Market Day, where a slice of Stratford is transformed to a Medieval thoroughfare with games, stalls, food and entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

Stalls host a wide variety of traditional arts and crafts, food and drinks and much more from a range of local producers and purveyors.

BOOLARRA FOLK FESTIVAL The Boolarra Folk Festival is a free annual community event held in the beautiful country township of Boolarra.

Come along and enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere whilst enjoying some fantastic live music. The performers are a superb mix of local and state talent and Boolarra has the perfect shady setting for the festival.

Patrons can hear over 8 hours of free music and browse 80 art, craft and food market stalls.

Keep an eye out for the street art and murals that can be spotted across Central Gippsland, it’s sure to brighten your travels.

Yarram has become a dedicated hub of HEESCO murals throughout the town. Heesco Khosnaran is a Mongolian born street artist based in Melbourne and has become widely known for his street art along silo trails and in many Victorian towns and throughout the world. Over a four-week period, Heesco transformed many buildings around Yarram into art highlights, each depicting a scene with local significance from indigenous history to individual stories.

Along Narracan Drive in Newborough, Steve BECHAZ has used his talents to transform functional railway infrastructure into celebrations of Australian wildlife.

In Morwell you can find a tribute to David Bowie, painted by Hayden DEWAR upon news of the musical icon’s death in January 2016.

In Traralgon you can find funky street art by JYSTA in the CBD. Heyfield Memorial Swimming Pool has recently been colourfully painted by local artist Tams HEZS as a gift to the community in which she grew up. As you drive around the region you’ll catch glimpses of one off murals in towns like Stratford, Boolarra, Churchill and Yallourn North even on the road between Yarram and Traralgon you’ll find an old dairy has been decorated as a librarian’s paradise of books.

The first Gunaikurnai came down from the mountains in Victoria’s north-west carrying his canoe on his head. He was Borun, the pelican. He crossed over a deep river at what is now known as Sale, and walked on alone to Tarra Warackel (Port Albert) in the west. As he walked, he heard a constant tapping sound, but could not identify it.

When he reached the deep water of the inlets, Borun put down his canoe and much to his surprise, there was a woman in it.

She was Tuk, the musk duck. He was happy to see her and she became his wife and the mother of the Gunaikurnai people. They are the parents of the five Gunaikurnai clans.

Latrobe Regional Gallery presents an exciting program of contemporary art for our region and visitors to enjoy.

A unique centre for creativity and contemporary art. This artist-run, non-profit organisation is a vital link within the Gippsland art community. arc, was established in 1982 by a group of young artists as a meeting place and work space, which today houses its administration base, retail outlet, private studios and fully equipped public access areas for printmaking, ceramics, metalwork, photography, painting and drawing.

Workshops are held on a regular basis throughout the year.

Discover one of the largest public galleries in eastern Victoria, with seven gallery spaces and a changing exhibition program that offers a blend of unique local perspectives, curated exhibitions of note and artworks from their collection.

SWITCHBACK GALLERY Designed by architect Roberta Rees and set amid tranquil landscaped gardens at Federation university in Churchill, the gallery provides an important showcase for the work of young and emerging artists and touring exhibitions. The Gallery hosts about ten exhibitions each year, featuring work from students as well as regional, metropolitan and international artists. The broad-ranging program includes contemporary work from all disciplines and is designed to encourage free-ranging discussion and debate between students, staff and the community.

GIPPSLAND ART GALLERY Gippsland Art Gallery was established in 1965 as the Sale Regional Arts Centre, and it was the first public art venue to open east of Melbourne. Every year the Gallery hosts around thirty exhibitions of local, national and international significance, in addition to ongoing and evolving displays of the permanent collection. The theme of the Gallery is Gippsland and the natural environment. Visitors will experience the best of Gippsland art and culture, in addition to exhibitions by some of Australia’s most admired artists. YARRAM COURTHOUSE GALLERY Yarram Courthouse Gallery is a community art space located in picturesque Yarram.

It is run by a dedicated team of Yarram Courthouse Gallery Inc, volunteers. The heritage listed building, built in 1906, has a unique architectural design reflective of the dedicated and talented craftsmen of its time. The building was once home to the former Yarram Magistrates Court. The gallery is open every day and shares its home with the local information centre and a gift shop selling local artisan made, arts and crafts style giftware.

OLD GIPPSTOWN HERITAGE PARK

OLD BROWN COAL MINE MUSEUM

This historic ‘town’ is a collection of authentic buildings dating from the 1840s to the 1930s. Featuring several National Trust classified buildings and one of the best collections of horse-drawn vehicles and farm equipment in Australia, it also includes the Dr Andrew’s (the ’father’ of Yallourn) collection and the Narracan Mechanics’ Institute library. Browse through the main street shops and soak up the atmosphere of Gippsland’s settlement past. Visit the original relocated buildings and their collections such as “Rhoden’s Halfway House” one of the few remaining Cobb & Co. inns in existence.

Watch out for their upcoming events which are great fun for the whole family, including Fairies in the Park, Easter Fair, Halloween, car shows, markets and school holiday activities to transport the kids back in time.

The museum holds an extensive display of photographic memoriabilia depicting the early days of the old town and open cut, both known as Brown Coal Mine prior to 1947.

An extension to the main building houses a 6 Mega Watt Turbine Generator from the now demolished Yallourn Power Station.

The room, known as the Yallourn Power Station Turbine Annexe, also displays other general power station memorabilia.

Throughout the year, the society conducts a series of special displays. These displays have featured general memorabilia, old tins, old tools, club trophies, ANZAC displays, wedding and debutante dresses.

Old Brown Coal Mine Museum, Yallourn North #VisitLatrobeCity

The Museum also includes a research library where you can search through family histories, books and logs.

PINO DERIU GEMSTONE AND MINERAL COLLECTION Situated at the Maffra Visitor Centre, this important collection of minerals, gemstones and fossils features the lifelong work of Pino Deriu. Pino (a Sardinian immigrant) arrived in Australia in 1952. Apart from a wide and fully representative range of Australian specimens, the collection also contains extremely rare items from Europe, Africa, South America and Asia. Pino’s preference was to leave most of the specimens he collected in their natural state rather than have them cut, polished or mounted, which adds to the scientific value of the collection.

POWERWORKS Get switched on at the PowerWorks Museum, dedicated to the Latrobe Valley mining and power generation industry with educational and interactive displays to excite all ages.

Dredger 21 sits at the entrance of the centre, with barbeques, picnic tables and ample parking available. Although tours inside the power stations are no longer running, you can venture on a self drive tour (map available from PowerWorks or Latrobe Visitor Information Centre). Open Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm.

Gippsland Regional Maritime Museum, Port Albert #VisitCentralGippsland

Australia’s first and only Maltese Museum dedicated to preserving Maltese culture.

Displaying handcrafted miniature replicas of Maltese historical buildings, a replica of a Maltese fishing boat called luzzu, traditional costumes, newsletters, model knights and symbols of the Order of the Knights of St John and traditional cooking utensils that were brought by the first Maltese immigrants to Australia.

GIPPSLAND REGIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM The Gippsland Regional Maritime Museum is in Gippsland’s first port, Port Albert, discovered in 1841 by the survivors of the wreck of the steamer Clonmel on the Ninety Mile Beach. The Museum has an extensive collection of historic artefacts, photos and documents housed in the heritage listed Bank of Victoria built in 1861 to store gold from the Gippsland Gold Rush. The Museum houses an extensive library and archive which is available for research and there is a comprehensive education kit of student activities. The museum is open 10am to 4pm daily from September to May. Weekends and school holidays June to August.

Port Albert Maritime Museum

Central Gippsland boasts a variety of experiences for you to explore the great outdoors, with everything from the Mountains to the Sea, Rainforests and Gorges and everything in between.

The area is known for the longest unbroken stretch of sand on the 90 Mile Beach, National Parks for those into 4-wheel driving or bushwalking, an abundance of lakes and rivers to fish, swim or boat in and a myriad of waterfalls to enjoy. If you prefer to jump in the car and explore the outdoors that way, we also have a great range of Touring Routes that are perfect for you.

NATIONAL AND STATE PARKS Moondarra State Park located in Moondarra on the northern edge of the Latrobe Valley, is home to an area of over 6000 hectares of forest, which has become a haven for native flora and fauna and is a perfect spot to bushwalk and picnic.

Morwell National Park is situated in the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges and there is plenty to do to keep you on the move and in the great outdoors. Enjoy activities including picnicking, bird watching, bushwalking and nature study. The best way to enjoy the park is to walk through it, following either Fosters Gully Nature Walk or Stringybark Ridge. You can experience exceptional views across the Latrobe Valley from Jumbuk Road. Alternatively, the Kerry Road Picnic Area is an ideal place to have a peaceful picnic in a quiet bushland setting.

lush fern-filled gullies, giant Mountain Ash and ancient forest areas. With many walks to enjoy, the park is a great place to get outdoors and explore a variety of natural wonders.

Alpine National Park offers a range of experiences for those who love to get outdoors and explore nature either on foot, bicycle or by car. There are great walks such as the Bryce Gorge Circuit or Tali Karng Trails. Or, if you prefer to head bush for a spot of 4-wheel driving, we love the tracks out from Licola and Dargo heading into the park where you can experience great river crossings and some of the best 4WD tracks on this side of the Great Divide.

Located just out of Sale, the Sale Common River Heritage and Wetlands Trail has a variety of walks over boardwalks to lookouts and bird hides where you can overlook the freshwater marshes and abundance of waterbirds and a great variety of plants and smaller pond life of the morass.

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES The small coastal town of Woodside is all about that relaxed coastal chill. It is a great spot to camp and explore the vast vistas of the 90 Mile Beach. Over summer the Woodside Beach is a patrolled beach by a dedicated team of surf life savers.

If you prefer to getaway from other people, McLoughlin’s and Reeves Beaches are the perfect spots for you. These two tranquil areas are on the southernmost edge of the 90 Mile Beach and are still one of our best kept secret spots for fishing or camping away from it all.

At the heart of Central Gippsland’s coast, you’ll find the small coastal town of Seaspray. Seaspray has great access to the 90 Mile Beach, manned surf life saving during summer (with meals available as well) and a fantastic caravan park to stay and enjoy the beach in peace. Just down the road from Seaspray, you’ll find both Golden Beach and Paradise Beach, these quiet towns are an ideal way to escape the world and sink your toes in the sand as the waves lap their way around you. Loch Sport is a special spot, with beach and lake access available close by the township.

LAKES AND RIVERS OF CENTRAL GIPPSLAND Known as a boatie’s paradise, Lake Glenmaggie is a fantastic spot to stop in for a swim, ski or put your boat in for a cruise or throw a line in for some fishing. The lake comes alive over summer with speedboat racing championships held on the lake, but year round it is a great spot to camp, or stay at one of the many holiday homes or caravan parks nearby while you enjoy the bushland setting.

Located in Newborough, Lake Narracan is nearly 300ha which makes it a perfect place for power boating, waterskiing, jet skiing, sailboarding or sailing. It is also a great spot for swimming, fishing and walks. Camping is available close by, so plan a short stay to enjoy all that Lake Narracan has to offer.

picnic or playtime. This spot is perfect for fishing with the family, with five fishing platforms around the lake and trout the catch of the day with regular stocks added for the school holidays. Lake Hyland and Mathison Park are also popular with dog walkers and birdwatchers as well.

Lake Guthridge and Lake Guyatt are a nature lover’s paradise, with walking tracks, picnic areas and a variety of bird life set to welcome you. Located in Sale, just off the Princes Highway, it is a great spot to stretch your legs or enjoy the many activities that can be found around the lakes.

Lake Kernot and Gippsland Immigration Park celebrates the contribution of immigrants to the region. Visiting the park located in Morwell, you will learn about the history of immigration into the area with 72 panels around the lake telling the history of Gippsland. You’ll also find playgrounds, barbeques, shelter and seating to sit and enjoy the view.

Adjoining the park is the Waterhole Creek Cultural Trail, ‘Give me your hand my friend’ – is the message of the Aboriginal artwork along the trail, its translation is ‘Gnokan Danna Murra Kor-Ki‘. Morwell indigenous Gunaikurnai artist Ronald Edwards was commissioned to create the artwork stretching 5kms along Waterhole Creek.

The Macalister River flows down from Mt Howitt in the Alpine National Park through the Gippsland Country Plains and finally meeting up with the Thomson River. It is a great spot for kayaking, fishing or some bushwalking in the surrounding areas. The Maffra and Glenmaggie Weirs provide a great view of the water storage that feed into our surrounding farm lands.

Joining just outside of Sale, the Thompson and Latrobe Rivers have long been integral to the growth and wealth of Central Gippsland. The rivers and surrounding townships were important during the gold rush era, with the heritage listed Swing Bridge and nearby Sale Canal built to assist with those mining and prospecting in the high country. Nowadays, the rivers are used for fishing, boating, kayaking and to assist local farms and producers.

As part of the West Gippsland Catchment, the Morwell River flows down from the Strzelecki Ranges below Boolarra South and runs for 41km before reaching the mouth of the Latrobe River. It is popular with anglers, who try their luck with brown trout and river blackfish. It is also a great spot to enjoy some fly fishing.

GO CHASING WATERFALLS Just a short drive from the Princes Highway through Moe, you’ll find Narracan Falls.

A short and easy walk to view the rushing water in this beautiful quiet area. Falls are equipped with car and coach parking, picnic areas and open fireplaces.

Morwell River Falls are fed by the rushing waters of the Morwell River that traverse through the valleys of the Strzelecki Ranges.

Falling over three levels, these falls are accessed via a short walk through pleasant bushland. The falls stem from the upper part of the Morwell River near Boolarra.

Billy’s Creek Falls offer the best of nature, with a challenging 8km walk that incorporates creek crossings throughout, before reaching the Falls that are a short vertical drop into a large pool surrounded by a scenic ferny setting.

Gardiner Falls are accessed via the Grand Strzelecki Track, this challenging 7km walk from Balook consists of four creek crossings and some steeper sections.

Accessed from the Tarra Valley Picnic Area, you’ll find Cyathea Falls a short 15 min walk through a stunning rainforest gully and across small streams. Cyathea Falls is a relatively small waterfall but located in a beautiful setting.

Located on the southern slopes of the Strzelecki Ranges, in the lush Albert River valley, you’ll find Minnie Ha Ha Falls a short waterfall into a large pool that is popular for fishing and swimming throughout the summer.

If you prefer gentle cascading waters, Tarra Falls is the stop for you. Located just a short walk or drive south of the Tarra Valley picnic area, Tarra Falls is a cascade of water flowing from the Tarra River. There are two viewing platforms nearby to give you a great view of the waters.

GREAT DRIVES IN CENTRAL GIPPSLAND Follow Route 91 from either Traralgon or Moe to experience the beautifully scenic Walhalla and Mountain Rivers Trail. You will find some of Gippsland’s most beautiful bush scenery and return with mountain views and scenic lookouts. Enjoy impressive views from Peterson’s Lookout or relive some mining heritage at Horseshoe Bend Tunnel. The trail will take you through country towns such as Erica, Rawson and Walhalla with many great experiences to enjoy along the way.

The beautiful Strzelecki Drive is a great way to see the beauty of the Strzelecki Ranges, with two distinct loops that either take you to Tarra Bulga National Park, Gormandale and Carrajung or Morwell National Park and the Powerworks Museum. Both loops offer some great stopping points with plenty of tasty food and drink to be enjoyed.

Latrobe Valley is home to one of the world’s largest brown coal deposits and the Power Drive is the perfect chance to experience the wonder of the Latrobe Valley coal mining industry. With two coal mines/open cuts feeding three power stations, this drive takes you by the power stations, open cuts and many more stops to see the history of coal mining in this area.

Central Gippsland boasts an amazing Wine Drive, the Central Gippsland Wine Trail that takes you on a scenic drive where you can

experience some of the best food and wine that the region has to offer. Starting in the lush Tarra Valley, you’ll first find Tom’s Cap Vineyard, then travelling through you’ll meet Traralgon Vineyard, Narkoojee Winery, Blue Gables Vineyard, Glenmaggie Wines and then some amazing pubs and hotels to be welcomed with good country hospitality.

From the Mountains to the Sea travels through and stops by amazing mountain views from Glenmaggie, where you can try your luck gold panning or fly-fishing, before heading off to Stratford and Sale and soaking up some wonderful heritage. Head on down to Tarra Bulga National Park via Rosedale (with a great bakery and café scene to enjoy!), arriving at Tarra Bulga you’ll be swept away with the beautiful lush ferns and giant trees.

After you’ve had your fill, head to Yarram and marvel at the Heesco murals then it’s just a short drive to historic Port Albert, one of Gippsland’s oldest fishing villages.

If you prefer your driving tours to include a bit more adventure, the Avon Wilderness Drive is set to test you. Travelling out from Newry, take in Huggett’s Crossing and Huggett’s Lookouts, then onto Wombat’s Crossing and Huggett and Mt Angus Tracks. This drive offers some spectacular views of the Alpine National Park and of course some amazing 4WD tracks to explore.

Morwell Town Common All Access Playground

The Gippsland Plains Scenic Drive is a great way to escape the Princes Highway as an alternative route between Traralgon and Stratford, running alongside the picturesque Gippsland Plains Rail Trail.

It takes you through small and historic townships, each with their own attractions worth a stop along the way.

Taste the 5 star rated wines at Narkoojee Winery and purchase a bottle of your favourite to take with you on the road or have a refreshing ale or cider at the Glengarry Hotel.

Arriving in the historical township of Toongabbie, you will be charmed by the beautifully restored Mechanic’s Institute Hall and St. David’s Church. Stop at Ned Stringers Memorial for the engaging story about his discovery of gold in Walhalla.

As you come into Cowwarr keep an eye out for those cows! Colourful and quaint, these cows add to the character of this tiny town.

The Cowwarr Weir is a popular spot for swimming and canoeing and is the perfect setting for a picnic.

Then on to Heyfield which services the timber and dairy industries, stop at the Wetlands Centre for a leisurely walk around the wetlands to view the extensive variety of birdlife, or visit Lions Park to see the poignant Victorian Timber Workers’ Memorial.

Tinamba is home to the Tinamba Food and Wine Festival held annually in April. If you are a foodie you will enjoy dining on Gippsland wines and produce at the Tinamba Hotel.

Gippsland Vehicle Collection, Maffra #VisitCentralGippsland

Maffra is the largest town on the drive and is a great opportunity to park the car and wander the main street and browse the local shops and cafes. Visit the gemstone and mineral collection at the Maffra Courthouse or be amazed at the wonderful collection of vintage cars on display at the Gippsland Vehicle Collection.

The last stretch of the C105 joins the Princes Highway at Stratford on the Avon River, home to the annual Shakespeare on the River Festival, interpretative Arts Trail and a range of quirky and memorable shops and cafes such as Turkish Magic or Wa-De-Lock Cellar Door, where you can stop in and stock up with some of the regions great local wines and produce.

There are a myriad of rail trails to travel, walking tracks and trails to explore and there is also some fantastic mountain biking for the adrenaline junkies out there.

TRANQUIL TRAILS Our wonderful rail trails are suitable for both walkers and cyclists with well maintained pathways for you to enjoy.

Grand Ridge Rail Trail: This trail winds for 13 picturesque kilometres between Mirboo North and Boolarra within the Strzelecki Ranges. The trail navigates beautiful mountain countryside, several flora reserves and crosses large embankments. The trail can be accessed from either Boolarra or Mirboo North.

The Moe to Yallourn Rail Trail follows the route of the former railway line that serviced the Yallourn Briquette Factory. Station. The trail passes the Moe Botanic Gardens and crosses Narracan Creek, both have access ramps from the trail. After crossing the creek the route passes through Newborough.

The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail stretches 63km taking in views of the Great Dividing Range as you pass through our lovely country towns. The trail is perfect for a short break with accommodation available along the trail. Stop by a selection of museums, cafes (hunt for the best coffee we have!) and experience country hospitality at its best.

The Tarra Trail from Yarram is a great walking and cycling trail that takes you to historic Port Albert. The track takes you through the Yarram Wetlands, where you can enjoy a great variety of flora and fauna.

WONDERFUL WALKS Waterhole Creek Cultural Trail is a lovely 5km walk located in Morwell with aboriginal artwork depicted along the walk. Gunaikurnai artist, Ronald Edwards captured traditional images which give identity to Country and tell stories and meanings from Gunaikurnai cultural heritage.

Explore the Wirilda Walking Trail, a five hour trail traversing the 1810 hectares Tyers State Park to the weir wall of Moondarra Reservoir with stunning views of the Tyers River gorge from Peterson’s Lookout. The park has an abundance of diverse wildflowers and birdlife, making it a favourite destination for naturalists. The limestone contains both plant and animal fossils.

Located in Moe, the Edward Hunter Heritage Bush Reserve is a haven for nature lovers.

Situated around the old railway reservoirs, there are plenty of paths to enjoy and explore. The bushland is alive with native birds, you may even see some of the resident echidnas or wallabies.

Located just a few minutes from the town of Churchill, Lake Hyland and Mathison Park is a perfect place to take a walk, have a picnic or enjoy some playtime with the family. At the southern end of the lake, you will find the remnants of Hare’s Farmhouse, an original homestead.

The Old Mill Site in Boolarra is set to welcome you with native flora and fauna in abundance. The Old Mill Site is nestled in a corner of state forest and houses 6kms of wheelchair friendly trails to follow. Head up to the bird hide to sit quietly and be surrounded by koalas, wombats, possums and over 30 species of birds. There are also rare orchids, fern gullies and beautiful bush to enjoy.

Moe Yallourn Rail Trail #VisitLatrobeCity

Tarra Bulga National Park is well known for its giant Mountain Ash, lush fern gullies and ancient myrtle beeches. The park is popular for picnics, walks, scenic drives and the study of nature. The self-guided Fern Gully Nature Walk starts at the Bulga picnic area and includes the famous Corrigan’s Suspension Bridge, which looks out above the tree fern canopy. There are a great range of walks to enjoy, with a wide variety of flora and fauna to explore.

The Blue Pool Walking Track and Freestone Creek area in Briagolong offer four great walks to enjoy, all of which are an excellent way to discover the natural and historical wonders of the surrounding forest. With walks ranging from 5 minutes to 2 hours, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The walks head into the Alpine National Park with plenty of lookouts to experience as well.

Macalister River Regional Park, Maffra #VisitCentralGippsland

The Macalister River Walk in Maffra is an easy 30 min walk that follows the bends in the Macalister River as the track takes you around the edge of the park. This walk is perfect for families with a playground, barbeque area and the proximity to the town and skatepark. The nearby Maffra Wetlands is also a great walk to enjoy.

McLoughlin’s Beach Foreshore Walking Track commences at the Long Jetty Foreshore Park and travels along the boardwalk and footbridge to the beautiful 90 Mile Beach. The 5km Foreshore Walking track will take you through wetlands, the estuary and sand dunes where you may spot a variety of wildlife.

Located in Rosedale, the Holey Plains State Park is a network of sandy roads and tracks within the park which covers over 10,000 hectares of open forests and woodlands. The park offers a variety of walks that takes in a high diversity of wildlife and flora, while providing excellent bushwalking, picnic areas and campgrounds.

Three kms south-east of Stratford, you’ll find the 56-hectare park called the Knob Reserve which is part of the Bataluk Cultural Trail, highlighting places of significance to the first inhabitants, the Gunaikurnai people. The reserve features an outlook which takes in the Avon River and the bluff, which was a major campsite for the Gunaikurnai. There are approximately 2.5km of formed tracks within the reserve.

BEAUT BIKING Blores Hill Mountain Bike Park just a few minutes from Heyfield is a magnificent area of natural bushland with tracks and trails for the avid riders among us. Set on approximately 50 acres, Blores Hill boasts an array of trails designed specifically for mountain bike riders. The Park features riding trails for all abilities from beginners to the most experienced. Blores Hill has fast become one of the best mountain bike areas in Victoria.

Heyfield Wetlands commences at the Heyfield Information Centre and follows around your choice of 4 different tracks.

Admire the mixture of wetland aromas with a hint of eucalypt as you cycle through the wetlands and enjoy what is a haven for various frog and bird species, and an extensive variety of water birds.

Morwell to Tralagon Shared Path, just under 14 km, joins Morwell Railway Station with Traralgon’s CBD. Running alongside the railway for a while it then heads north along Waterhole Creek before following back roads past the Latrobe Valley Airport and caravan parks to enter Traralgon’s CBD via the picturesque and tree lined Kay Street. From then it is an easy link to Traralgon Railway Station or the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail.

Haunted Hills Bike Park due to be officially opened in February 2021. Designed by mountain bike riders for mountain bike riders as one of Australia’s leading gateway mountain bike destinations. With 13.5km of top class trails ranging from beginner to expert and a large pump track, the park can progressively introduce riders to rollers, berms, jumps, rock gardens, technical trails and climbs. Four popular choices are: The Coastal Loop from Sale to Seaspray, via Golden Beach, at 102km. The Mountain Climb from Heyfield to Licola, 108km round trip. The Power View, ride through the massive Loy Yang power station from Traralgon, 15km round trip.

The Grand Strzelecki Track is a wonderland for those of us who love nature. The track links the Morwell National Park with the Tarra Bulga National Park. With wide open vistas at every turn there is plenty of space to get away from the crowds and get back to nature.

You’ll find forest giants, or step into a lost world of ancient temperate rainforest equal to any on Earth…yet not hear a sound except the serenade of lyrebirds. Come and walk in solitude through a different rainforest so rare, most people have never heard of it, and far fewer will ever see it. Come and discover peaceful, beautiful places far from the beaten track, and away from the parks all the tourists visit. When you need to reacquaint yourself with the comforts of life, try a home cooked meal in a friendly country guest house or a cozy cabin in a tiny, peaceful hamlet amidst all this natural beauty.

Home to the tallest flowering hardwood trees on earth, the majestic Mountain Ash makes the Strzelecki Ranges of Gippsland like no other place. These massive trees and prolific jungle-like undergrowth that cloaked these ranges when white settlers first arrived became known as The Great Forest of South Gippsland, or simply The Great Forest. Much of The Great Forest was lost to sawmilling and settlement, but examples are alive and well in the Eastern Strzelecki Ranges where they are now preserved in Morwell National Park, Tarra Bulga National Park, the Gunyah Rainforest Reserve, and 30,000 hectares of privately managed protected forests connecting and surrounding these core areas.

Until The Grand Strzelecki Track was built, most of these forests were inaccessible to the public except for short walks in the two national parks. Now bushwalkers can traverse from park to park and enjoy extended walks beyond park boundaries, discovering clear mountain streams, hidden natural treasures, waterfalls, sweeping views, rare and endangered ecosystems, and flora and fauna that most visitors to the region have never seen.

At the same time, the track is easy to find with four entry points located 10 minutes to ½ half an hour from the Gippsland towns of Churchill, Traralgon and Yarram. There are walks for everyone, regardless of your level of experience or fitness, so come and breathe the fresh air and lose yourself – or discover yourself – in this lost world which most trekkers still don’t know exist!
