No loafing allowed as team puts together record Cuban sandwich

Bending at the waist inside a small, blue trailer, Robert Faedo pressed his forearms against the counter top and peered through the window.

On the other side, a group of four wanted to know, "What's a Cuban?"

Faedo, it just so happens, was the right guy to ask.

"Ham, salami and pork, those are your main meats," said Faedo, who with his wife Michelle, runs Michelle Faedo's On the Go food truck. "Then, an all-the-way version is mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Or you have the traditional version: Mustard, cheese, and pickles and

toasted."

The Faedos, who won May's 2012 Cuban Sandwich Festival in the traditional category, were one of several participants at Saturday's Taste of the Cuban sandwich event inside Hillsborough Community College's Ybor campus.

While there, they helped Tampa collect a little history.

During the festival, which included at least nine other food vendors, organizers created the world's largest Cuban – 36 feet. The new record surpasses Miami's 30-foot creation, slathered together in December.

"Now people are starting to put a little more love into it," Michelle Faedo said. "Have a little more pride, showing people who come to visit Tampa our historic cuisine."

Beneath the gray hue of clouds and ample rain drops, two men carried a box, spanning at least 5-feet in length, of Cuban bread into the HCC Ybor Room. After the plastic wrap was torn off, and the box cut open, the baked roll - 36 feet of it – was laid end-to-end. Each restaurant was responsible for a 3-foot section.

Folks from The Columbia Restaurant completed the final portion of the record-setting sandwich.

Organizers donated the 432-inch creation to Tampa Bay Harvest to feed local homeless.

Here since May, the Tamang Family had never tried the Cuban. From Nepal and in Tampa for two years, Hema Tamang brought her son, Ayush, and daughter Ayumi, to Ybor for the event.

"It's very exciting," Hema Tamang said.

Hema Tamang, whose husband is stationed at MacDill, tabbed her son as a food lover, implying he'd get a kick out trying something new.

She was right.

"It's going to be our new experience," said an enthusiastic Ayush Tamang, 13.

With the help of friend Dena Leavengood, the family sampled both the traditional and all-the-way versions of the sandwich. No words were needed to convey what they thought. Each member of the

"For me, cooking and feeding people and watching their happiness, it makes me happy," Michelle Faedo said. "That's just how we go."

Bending at the waist inside a small, blue trailer, Robert Faedo pressed his forearms against the counter top and peered through the window.

On the other side, a group of four wanted to know, "What's a Cuban?"

Faedo, it just so happens, was the right guy to ask.

"Ham, salami and pork, those are your main meats," said Faedo, who with his wife Michelle, runs Michelle Faedo's On the Go food truck. "Then, an all-the-way version is mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Or you have the traditional version: Mustard, cheese, and pickles and

toasted."

The Faedos, who won May's 2012 Cuban Sandwich Festival in the traditional category, were one of several participants at Saturday's Taste of the Cuban sandwich event inside Hillsborough Community College's Ybor campus.

While there, they helped Tampa collect a little history.

During the festival, which included at least nine other food vendors, organizers created the world's largest Cuban – 36 feet. The new record surpasses Miami's 30-foot creation, slathered together in December.

"Now people are starting to put a little more love into it," Michelle Faedo said. "Have a little more pride, showing people who come to visit Tampa our historic cuisine."

Beneath the gray hue of clouds and ample rain drops, two men carried a box, spanning at least 5-feet in length, of Cuban bread into the HCC Ybor Room. After the plastic wrap was torn off, and the box cut open, the baked roll - 36 feet of it – was laid end-to-end. Each restaurant was responsible for a 3-foot section.

Folks from The Columbia Restaurant completed the final portion of the record-setting sandwich.

Organizers donated the 432-inch creation to Tampa Bay Harvest to feed local homeless.

The Taste of the Cuban Sandwich festival will construct the world's largest Cuban at the Ybor Campus of Hillsborough Community College.

Beginning at noon, Tampa restauranteurs will begin building the giant sandwich that will measure 36-feet in length, surpassing the current Cuban Sandwich record of 30-feet held by Miami since December 2011.

Tampa Bay restaurants will be selling sample size Cuban Sandwiches (price varies by vendor, most $1-$2.50 per sample) for hungry attendees to declare their favorite Cuban sandwich. A dozen different varieties will be available.

Tampa City Councilwoman Yvonne (Yolie) Capin will present the resolution naming the historical Cuban Sandwich as the official sandwich of Tampa, and recognize the winners of the May 2012 Cuban Sandwich Festival winners.

Enjoy a live performance of the Cuban Sandwich Song/Jingle, reading of “I Am A Cuban Sandwich” by Tampa’s poet laureate James Tokley, music performances by Ray Villadonga and the Rayzilla’s Dreamboats.

The festival will be held tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Taste of the Cuban Sandwich events will take place in the Ybor Campus' Ybor room, cantina and plaza. The Ybor building is located in historic Ybor City on Avenida Republica de Cuba.

The event is part of the annual Cuban Sandwich Show, and the invitational art exhibit in HCC Ybor Campus Art Gallery will be open to the public during the festival. About the Cuban Sandwich Show The Cuban Sandwich Show is a month-long series of art and cultural events whose sole subject is the city of Tampa. Produced by the Artists and Writers Group Inc., events include visual arts, literature, theater, music, and cuisine. In its 21st year, the show organized by artistic director David Audet displays the sense of whimsy, history, serious humor and other idiosyncrasies of Tampa’s creative citizens. Cuban Sandwich Invitational Show When/where: 2204 North 15th Street 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. today.

Why go? This invitational exhibition features eclectic, mixed media artwork from local and regional artists. All of the works were specifically created about Tampa and Ybor City. It is a labyrinth of spaces, objects and sounds illuminating the mysterious city sheltering them.

Price: Free All You Can Eat Crayfish Party When/where: Ikea 1103 North 22nd Street at 4, 6 and 8 p.m.

Why go? IKEA presents an end-of-summer tradition with all-you-can-eat crayfish and other Swedish treats. Advance tickets must be purchased at the Ikea restaurant.

When/where: 711 North Franklin Street at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday Why go? The Tampa Theatre's Summer Classics series comes to an end this weekend with a screening of the classic film Casablanca. There will be post-film commentary by film expert Harriet Deer about the cast, production, and cultural significance.

Price: $7 Tampa Bay Sunday Bicyclers When/where: 5020 North Florida Avenue at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday Why go? The Tampa Bay Sunday Bicyclers invite new riders on this trek today. Just bring your helmet, a full water bottle, a spare tube, and a road-worthy bicycle for a ride from Seminole Heights to MacDill Air Force Base. The ride travels about 24 miles at a speed of about 12 to 16mph.

The ride begins promptly at 7:45am, leaving the Independent and heading south to MacDill Air Force Base via the new downtown Riverwalk, Bayshore Boulevard and the Gadsden Park Bike Trail.

Riders will stop at Ballast Point on the way back, returning through Hyde Park and along the winding streets that line the Hillsborough River. Afterward, enjoy Sunday brunch, pastries and gourmet coffee back at the Independent.

Price: Free BBQ Extravaganza Block Party and Rooster Promenade When/where: 1609 Angel Oliva Senior Street at 2 p.m. on Sunday Why go? Enjoy live music, lots of BBQ and drinks, and a costume parade open to everybody: children, dogs, pirates, hipsters, and, of course, fowl of all feathers. Bring costumes, do-da hats, wagon floats and umbrellas as we celebrate the life and, alas, demise of James E. Rooster, a famous feathered citizen of Ybor City, organizers say. Promenade begins around 6pm.

Price: Free Free Admission for Kids to the Glazer's Children's Museum When/where: 110 West Gasparilla Plaza, on Saturday from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.-6 p.m.

Why go? This weekend will mark the last two days of the museum's offer for kids under the age of 12 to get in free as they celebrate the final week of summer vacation.

Price: Free for kids age 12 and under. Adults are $15.
