Do We Need AAPEX Every Year?

he global pandemic has many of us rethinking our own business models and how we interact with both vendors and customers. Year in and year out, many of us attend AAPEX. Let’s look at the history.

I have been in the industry a long time…I don’t mind admitting I am on the “back nine” chronologically. Industry veterans will remember shows like APAA and Big I. These were also annual events. After a while exhibitors who were at both tired of the expense and duplication of attendees they were meeting. So those shows were combined into AAPEX, to be held annually in Las Vegas concurrently with SEMA, which also was in Vegas but in a different location.

The first AAPEX began Tuesday November 3, 1992. I remember it well as that day Bill Clinton was elected president. The show was four days, Tuesday – Friday, which was true of SEMA. SEMA has stayed four days, but AAPEX soon cut back to three, Tuesday-Thursday.

Aftermarket International has distribution at 18 events worldwide (and we have the shipping bills to prove it!). Some are annual…AAPEX, Automechanika Dubai, Moscow, Shanghai, INA PAACE, to name a few. Then there are the every other year events…

Autopromotec, Equip Auto, and of course Automechanika Frankfurt. The latter is huge…in more than a dozen buildings and runs six days (twice as long as AAPEX).

While I know of no studies that show how many people attend both AAPEX and Frankfurt, I am sure it is a big number, certainly more than 1,000 and perhaps more than 10,000. It would be interesting if those two Goliaths shared their registration and/ or attendee data so the industry could perform this analysis.

Why do some shows maintain an annual schedule, and others don’t? Naturally there is the financial incentive. And why do exhibitors continue to support the annual events?

Perhaps they don’t want to but feel they must.

Pretend you are the president of ABC brake company and you exhibit at AAPEX. You are thinking of not exhibiting one year. But you are nervous…your competitors are exhibiting (exhibitor lists are published in advance to attract attendees and help them plan their schedules) and you fear they will try to steal your customers. The comments will be something like “see, they aren’t here, they are in financial trouble…why would you want to do business with them”?

But now with the “new normal” changes are on the horizon. And none too soon, from my perspective.

With Automechanika Frankfurt being every other year on the odd-numbered years, starting in 2021, this is the perfect time for the bigshots involved with AAPEX, MEMA, Autocare, etc. to move to a bi-annual framework, beginning 2022.

That would be 30 years from the first AAPEX. A nice round number.

How will the industry respond? You have my thoughts. What are yours?

I want to close on a melancholy note. In this column you see a picture of Stephen Kann. Steve was my predecessor as publisher of Aftermarket International (and its predecessor Auto & Truck International). He had a long and distinguished career in the publishing industry, well before digital became the coin of the realm. He was honored by his peers in the Overseas Automotive Council (OAC), of which Aftermarket International is a member and a sponsor of events. He also introduced me to many of his industry friends, for which I am eternally grateful.

A longtime resident of Brooklyn Heights, NY, Stephen Kann passed away several months ago. He was 93.

Covid-19, Diagnostic Tools & Performance The Covid-19 pandemic continues to be a major concern worldwide as countries balance the need for opening commerce back up while keeping the virus at bay. Global leaders have taken different approaches to battle the spread of Covid-19 that range from complete lockdowns to virtually no regulations at all. The struggle between politicians and scientists isn’t likely to end soon. The precautions of individuals also range from one extreme to the other, with some only leaving their homes when necessary — and always with a mask — to those who take no precautions and continue with their daily routines.

As an owner of a general repair shop, it is your job to do everything you can to make your business successful, as well as safe for your customers and employees. Here are some practices that are taking place in shops within the United States.

• It’s important to let your customers know that you are open for business and that precautions have been taken to protect them. Social media, such as Facebook, is one popular method of informing the public, as are radio advertisements, and portable signs outside your business.

• Many shops used “Early Bird” key drop-off boxes for customers who must be at work before some shops open. Make this same service available to motorists who prefer NOT to enter the shop.

Payments can be handled over the telephone with a credit or debit cards.

• Install Plexiglas dividers on the counter that protects the customer and the individual behind the counter when dealing with business transactions. Wearing a face mask during interactions also is recommended.

• Assure the customer that their vehicle will be sanitized before it is returned.

• Have the customer waiting area sanitized on a regular schedule. This is also a good time to do away with the free coffee and donuts to prevent the spread of the virus. Make sure you explain why the service has been discontinued.

• Use a video screen to show repair estimates instead of personal contact or the passing of paper back and forth.

• Have bottles of hand sanitizer readily available to customers and employees • Tell employees to stay at home if they have any symptoms or are not feeling well.

• Require that all employees, including yourself, have their temperatures taken before starting work each day.

• Hold employee meetings in the shop area instead of the confines of a shop lunch room where individuals would be closer than six-feet from one another.

• If the shop has a lunch room, stagger lunch hours to limit the number of individuals being in the room at the same time.

Are Performance Alterations Up Your Alley?

hen it comes to performance upgrades on new and older vehicles, some believe there is no money to be made and that customers are never happy with the results. Do a pro-and-con list to decide if your shop wants to get into this portion of the aftermarket that has potential for making additional profits. Performance alterations can be anything from simply restyled, samesized wheels and tires, to body kits, engine modifications, suspension modifications, and alterations that make the car unrecognizable. The combinations are unlimited. Someone is going to get this work and tens of thousands of people pay to have this work done every day. Much of it may be done in a specialty shop when it involves extensive restyling, but a lot of it may come to your shop simply by letting people know that it is available.

Let’s go into the area of my expertise — suspension.

Altered suspensions on many non-U.S. nameplates today are common among certain driving groups. These suspension parts may be purchased as a kit or individually from various suppliers. If you don’t have expertise in the area of suspension rebuilding, extensive suspension rebuilding or working on altered suspension systems, you would naturally shy away from this type of work and feel that it’s more work than it’s worth.

provided you have the background knowledge of what the various companies and kits are doing, and why they’re doing it, it’s really almost “a walk in the park.” You must also be aware of some of the ramifications and how to make sure the customer is satisfied.

If it’s an exhaust system, sound is going to be the first change that takes place. You may not like the sound of a premium or performance exhaust system, but the owner of the car may absolutely love it. When he laid down untold sums of money for it and went shopping for someone to put it on, all he cared about was finding someone to install it correctly. What it sounds like is not your problem. It’s the customer’s doing. Your issue is putting it on correctly.

Forged upper control arms, fully adjustable upper caster and camber adjusters, offset upper inner control arm shafts, adjustable upper ball joints, dropped spindles, increased suspension travel without binding and updated basic suspension geometry are part of the suspension package installed on this car. Old sheet metal, new everything else.

Direct-fit, low backpressure, performance exhaust systems for late-model passenger cars, sport/utility vehicles and pickups are available from numerous manufacturers. However, if you’re working on older vehicles, you may have to team up with a mufflerman in your area who is proficient in the custom bending of exhaust pipes.

Keep in mind, that many of the performance-exhaust manufacturers do not have direct-fit systems for many oldermodel muscle cars and trucks, but do have performance mufflers to fit the bill. Undercar shops, which use portable pipe benders, are fewer now than they were a few decades ago. If you have a bender and the skill, there is money to be made. If you don’t you may want to consider working with a shop that does. That shop, in turn, may farm-out other specialty upgrades to you.

If you choose to get into engine modification and performance you must, of course, be aware of whatever laws or rules govern the operation of the vehicle with altered engine performance in regards to decibel levels and emissions regulations. Again, it’s not really your problem, provided it is legal for you to put it on. Many manufacturers of performance chips, aftermarket computer systems and turbo kits have done extensive research. If it’s a reputable company that says the chip, when properly installed, complies with the various laws, rules and regulations, you can pretty much assume that it does.

Again, it’s not the issue of your opinion regarding whether or not it complies. It’s whether or not you want to do this type of work. If you do, and you put on quality, aftermarket performance systems and the engineering is behind it, there is no reason to not take on the job.

Some technicians in shops absolutely, positively hate anything that isn’t 100% stock, original equipment, including, in some in some instances, aftermarket parts. They will almost literally refuse to work on it. This is not the person you want doing such work on a performance vehicle, but if you have a technician in your shop who is “into cars” and has a vehicle or friends with vehicles with altered systems, he’s the person to go after. Working straight time at a very decent rate for installing various aftermarket performance items, including all the areas mentioned, is not a money loser for a technician. In fact, one shop I know of has taken its highest-paid technician and averaged out his monthly salary, divided it by the number of hours, taken that dollar figure and raised it by 20% to25%.

That’s the rate charged for working on performance or alteredvehicle systems. How can you lose money on a deal like that?

You really can’t.

Customers who want performance and altered systems on

their cars will demand perfection in work, fit and finish like it was designed and for the system to be professionally and neatly installed. If you’re going to put a turbo on a car, the plumbing and all connections going to it must be absolutely pristine and something that the owner is proud of when he lifts his hood.

If you’re going for an exhaust system, likewise, the installation must be neat, clean and actually better than the OE exhaust system was in terms of configuration and installation with no rattles or interference when the vehicle goes over dips or bumps in the road. In the area of suspension, you must be aware that when you alter the ride height on a vehicle and drastically affect the various alignment angles you may run into some body interference with the tires. There are tools that are made to flair wheel wells. There are various tire and wheel combination packages that are known to fit. Various spring weights and other suspension components allow you to have a very predictable install on many types of performance cars.

For the older U.S.-manufactured muscle cars, a wide variety of altered spindles and control arms, disc-brake packages and tire-and-wheel packages are available. Again, someone is going to put these kits on.

One shop owner I know prefers not to go shopping for these parts himself. He advises his customers who these suppliers are and has the customer do the research, contact the company, speak to their engineering and design people and then, determine what is needed and what is wanted. Between the customer and the company supplying these parts, it is worked out what should work correctly and in 90% plus of the cases it does. The parts are then delivered to my friend’s shop and a technician who just loves doing chassis, suspension and engine-modification work on older U.S. muscle cars is “turned loose” on the car. Never is he asked how soon it will be done,

Scan Tool and Oscilloscope Questions and Answers

By Joe Ragnanese, Automotive Professional & Trainer What type of symptoms would warrant using an oscilloscope for diagnostics?

A shop may use a scope for a variety of issues. An intermittent concern, or something that may only happen in certain weather conditions, is a perfect scenario for using an oscilloscope. If a customer concern stated that the “vehicle acceleration seemed to cut out when leaving a stoplight and momentarily on inclines,” you would have to start a plan for your diagnostic process. While initial testing on a scan tool or with a multimeter can be inaccurate, an oscilloscope can easily pinpoint a sensor, such as a throttle position sensor as the culprit. It is easy to see if there are imperfections in the waveform and capture long spans of time. This provides accurate and ample data samples, which can mean all the difference in diagnosis of an intermittent concern.

How do bi-directional controls or lack of bi-directional controls on aftermarket scan tools affect diagnosing faults?

Having the ability to control different actuators on a vehicle is very important when performing diagnostics. High-end aftermarket scan tools offer a wide variety of functions that are 12

Actuator tests are also beneficial when checking for no start conditions or evaporative system faults. Having the ability to quickly actuate a fuel pump or EVAP solenoids can narrow down possible causes and ultimately shorten diagnostic time.

comparable to OEM scan tools, depending on the vehicle being serviced. For example, you may have an issue where the air conditioning is blowing warm air out of the vents. If you have a scan tool that can control the blend door actuator, you can rule that out as a possible cause just by hooking up a scan tool. After checking the basics, a conventional approach might be hooking up an A/C machine and checking the amount of refrigerant in the system. Checking the blend door actuator is a quick and simple first step when you have the right scan tool. If you find an issue with the actuator, you can save yourself 30 minutes to an hour of diagnostic time by taking 5 minutes to check it.

When a fuel injector is in question, an oscilloscope can give an accurate picture of its condition. An oscilloscope will easily show any imperfections in the wave form as well as highlight how long the injector stays open and closed.

You can also verify further by using an oscilloscope and looking at the wave form. A normal wave form will show communications between modules.

What tools are most useful in the instance where a vehicle has an engine-run problem but no Diagnostic Trouble Codes?

In this instance, let’s say you have a vehicle with a standard V-6 engine that has a misfire and is running poorly. Even without a DTC, a scan tool is a useful tool to start your diagnosis. On high-end aftermarket scan tools, most manufacturers are supported with some sort of misfire tracking. This can be a good first step in identify the problem cylinder(s). If the issue is effecting more than one cylinder, you could identify which bank the problem is on by looking at fuel trim and O2 sensor data. Once you identify the location of the issue, you can use a multi-meter or an oscilloscope to pinpoint the cause. Let’s say that you determine the misfiring cylinder and confirm that the compression and ignition system are good. You can hook up an oscilloscope scope to look at the fuel injector and determine if it is opens or not, how long it stays open, and if it opens at the correct time. A situation where a multi-meter would be effective is a vehicle that is cranking but not starting.

By looking at vehicle data, you determine that the Powertrain Control Module is not receiving a signal from the crankshaft sensor. You can use a multi-meter to perform a voltage drop test on the wires from the Powertrain Control Module to the sensor. This can easily determine the integrity of the wiring and help you narrow down your possible causes before purchasing a new sensor or module.

place to start would be to hook up a scan tool and see if you can communicate with any modules at all. If you can communicate with some but not all of them, that would indicate a specific area in the communication circuit that you can test. If the scan tool won’t communicate with any modules, then there is a wiring problem somewhere or a shorted module has taken down the whole system. A multi-meter is useful for checking voltages on your high and low circuits. It is important to identify your known good idling voltages and the high/ low voltages. For instance, if two pins (CAN + and a 5V reference for a sensor) were shorted together on a connector for a Body Control Module, the whole CAN circuit would be taken down. You could check the voltage on the wire and determine there was an issue with the CAN + wire. This issue can also be determined with an oscilloscope but setting up a multi-meter is easier.

What diagnostic equipment is most useful, when diagnosis issue in CAN circuits?

While looking at oscilloscope data can be useful for diagnosing CAN circuit faults, a scan tool and a multi-meter are very effective in diagnosing communication faults. A good

The Move to More Earth-Friendly

Air-Conditioning Refrigerants

oday, heavy-duty truck and off-highway vehicle manufacturers face a multi-million- dollar switch to a more environmentally friendly, but more expensive and more flammable refrigerant -- R-1234yf. Car and lighttruck makers in the U.S. already have moved to the more expensive hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) R-1234yf refrigerants from previous hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) such as R-134a to meet EPA requirements prompted by global-warming concerns.

However, similar standards are not yet in place for commercial vehicles.

INFICON, a global supplier of leak-detection equipment, believes a changeover to HFOs for heavy-duty trucks and off-highway vehicles is inescapable and soon will require the adoption of more stringent AC-system quality-control checks as well.

Most heavy-duty trucks are equipped with air conditioning, but INFICON estimates that today more than 80 percent of all farm combines and tractors, as well as construction, mining and other off-highway vehicles come equipped with AC systems as well. North American production of heavy-duty Class 8 trucks totaled approximately 350,000 units last year, while off-highway-vehicle production reached 130,000 units or more during the same period.

pressure on OEMs to change over to HFO refrigerants or adopt tighter leak-detection methodology for quality control and safety reasons. New regulatory requirements and a changeover to new refrigerants will make leak testing more important than ever.

INFICON research indicates that fewer than 20 percent of the heavy-duty trucks, farm tractors and other off-highway vehicles receive thorough leak-detection tests on their AC systems before they leave the factory. However, newer, more

environmentally friendly refrigerants are not only more flammable, but those refrigerants also can form dangerous acids if placed in contact with water vapor through ingress leaks. Moving forward, there will be increased demand to test the AC systems on these vehicles before they ship to assure product quality.

HFO refrigerants definitely are more environmentally friendly than the HFCs they replace. For instance, the newer automotive refrigerants have a rating of just four on an industry-accepted Global Warming Potential (GWP) scale, while HFCs are rated at more than 1,300. What this means is that, although nearly 10 times more expensive, an HFO’s life cycle in the atmosphere is only about 11 days compared to up to more than 200 years for an HFC. This is where forward planning becomes critical. INFICON believes that a change to HFO refrigerants could take from two up to four years once government regulations are in place although at least one heavy-duty manufacturer already is making the switch.

While changes made to meet car and light-truck refrigerant standards might prove helpful, industry experts point out that they do not fully take into account heavy-duty and off-highway customer requirements such as the need to accommodate extreme duty cycles.

There are changes that will need to be made to the engine cooling system, for example. As a refrigerant, R-1234yf is 10-12 percent less effective than typical HFCs. To compensate for the loss in efficiency an additional internal heat exchanger might be required that can be built into the suction and discharge hoses. AC hoses also might need to be improved or replaced, and different viscosity oils and new lubricants may be called for.

Early leak detection

is important at every stage of the manufacturing process, but especially on the final assembly line. INFICON recommends robotic or operator-managed helium-based leak tests for every AC system component, including heat exchangers, AC hoses, connectors, compressors and O-ring connectors.

INFICON tries to understand each customer’s corporate culture and their specific product needs, then develop a leakdetection system that meets those needs. We also will assist in training employees on the use of leak-detection equipment and implementation of the leak-detection program itself.

Manufacturers should perform a refrigerant-only “sniff ” test on the final assembly line to ensure that engine-run tests haven’t created additional leaks. In fact, this offers an opportunity to test for fuel and hydraulic leaks, as well.

With or without future government mandates, we believe truck and off-highway equipment manufacturers will need to prepare for the replacement of HFC refrigerants in the near future and that tighter leak-detection procedures will need to be included in the changeover.

INFICON offers a variety of “sniffer” leak detectors suitable for both manual and robotic applications.

Bergstrom Appoints Dan Giovannetti As President And CEO

Obituary Stephen W. Kann, age 93, passed away in New York on March 30th, 2020. A graduate of Bradley University, he was an Industrial Engineer, and Editor, Publisher, Vice President and Director at Johnston International Publishing in Manhattan for Industrial World and other trade magazines. A world traveler, writer and speaker, he received many awards including the Jesse H. Neal Award for Editorial Excellence and the Overseas Automotive Council’s OAC Lifetime Achievement Award. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War. He was predeceased by his parents Alice and Arthur Kann and his sister Hanne McElheny. He is survived by his sister Ellen Pine.

He is survived by his loving children James, Victoria and Elizabeth, their spouses, their mother Patricia, eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Steve loved his family, helping others, and making people smile. He will be greatly missed. Giovannetti has been serving as interim CEO since

AASA, APA Search Partner to Support Aftermarket Employees The Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA) announced recently that it will partner with member company APA Search, a leading retained executive search firm specializing in the global automotive and transportation-related industries, on a free platform to match automotive and transportation employers with available industry associates who have lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative was launched on Tuesday, May 5.

The platform, which is based on the APA Search website, will provide unemployed automotive aftermarket professionals with opportunities to be found and hired quickly by automotive industry companies. The website also will provide industry employers a free, searchable and indexed database of automotive associates with vital industry skills and experience. The database has been updated to accommodate all positions related to the transportation industry.

“This important partnership with APA Search is a crucial part of what our association does best,” said Paul McCarthy, AASA president & COO. “We foster meaningful connections within our industry and offer resources to our members. Retaining valuable people in our essential industry is how the automotive aftermarket will continue to grow and prosper in the future despite the impact of the COVID19 pandemic.”

“If we’ve done our job correctly and reached the right people, the database should grow exponentially during the first 30 days,” said Howard Kesten, president of APA Search.

“We would hope that all industry stakeholders spread the word to their affiliated companies and have them forward the COVID-19 link to all of those people who have lost their jobs. I would ask the automotive employers that have registered, to check the website often as we expect many new candidates to populate the platform every day.”

Automechanika Frankfurt To Be Held September 14 to 18, 2021 Due to difficult conditions resulting from the corona pandemic and measures taken to stem its spread, including event bans and travel restrictions that are regularly being extended, Messe Frankfurt and its customers, partners and supporting associations have agreed to postpone the Automechanika Frankfurt event that was originally scheduled to take place from 8 to 12 September 2020.

Automechanika Frankfurt, the international industry gathering for the automotive aftermarket, is being postponed until 14 to 18 September 2021 in response to local and global measures implemented to stop the spread of COVID 19. It simply would not have been possible for many of the exhibitors and visitors from over 180 countries to take part in the event under the conditions currently prevailing or those expected at that time. In agreement with exhibitors, representatives from industry, workshops and retail, associations and partners, Messe Frankfurt has rescheduled the event for autumn 2021.

Automechanika Frankfurt will then resume its biennial rotation – the event will now be taking place in oddnumbered years.

Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt, explains: “Our top priority is ensuring the health and safety of everyone – exhibitors and visitors alike – taking part in the event. With waves of the pandemic moving around the globe and many countries not expecting it to peak until the summer, I am certain that the decision to postpone Automechanika until September 2021 is the right one. Over the past two weeks in particular, we have been engaged in intensive discussions with our customers, partners and supporting associations, and they sent us a clear signal.

By holding the event in 2021, we are responding to our customers’ wishes.”

Online training in autumn 2020 ‘By and for automotive professionals’: A number of online events are planned for this autumn that focus on training and professional development for German workshops in particular.

Automechanika is collaborating with various trade media organisations, influencers, multipliers and associations to plan these events.

After the owner’s death the business was sold and Black moved on to sales for such companies as Bose Ride and, most recently, FlowBelow.

“I ran a fleet for over 25 years and have built many long-term relationships in the fleet world,” Black said. “I understand how fleets think and what their concerns are.

29th edition of the exhibition postponed until 25-28 May 2022 Autopromotec, the most specialized international exhibition of automotive equipment and aftermarket products, announces today the postponement of the next edition, originally scheduled in Bologna on 26-29th May 2021, now rescheduled to 25-28th May, 2022.

In the heart of the Motor Valley, Autopromotec, an event that has gathered all aftermarket product groups for over 50 years, took the important decision after a deep analysis of the economic and sanitary framework on a global scale, having as its primary goal the protection of its almost 1700 exhibiting companies, with a share of 43% from abroad (data

relevant to the 2019 edition), that traditionally choose it as a showcase for their products and services.

The postponement to 2022, a year identified by many analysts as that of the economic recovery, will enable the exhibiting companies to invest their financial resources at a more appropriate moment, thus being able to maximize business opportunities, which has always been a strong point of the Bologna exhibition. Following the postponement, the show will now take place in even-numbered years.

Borla Expands, Producing Face-Shield Materials to Fight Coronavirus Many members of the worldwide automotive aftermarket know Borla Performance Industries for the company’s expertise in designing and manufacturing performance exhaust systems. Earlier this year, Co-Founder/ CTO Alex Borla and Co-Founder/President Alyse Borla added a muchneeded product line to its portfolio, joining the fight in preventing the spread of the COVID 19, also known as the coronavirus. In addition, Borla is offering the company’s safety plan to other industries in the state.

[TRADE SHOWS] AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET PLACES TO BE

Automechanika Shanghai Following fifteen consecutive record-breaking years, the 16th edition of Automechanika Shanghai will run from December 2 through December 5, 2020 and be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center. The show anticipates hosting more than 6,650 exhibitors across the 366,000-square-meter space.

The show will also have a growing number of special sectors, zones, and fringe program events that will amplify the latest advancements and trends throughout the industry.

This year, Automechanika Shanghai 2020 takes on a theme that echoes the last edition’s progressive concept of its position in the automotive ecosystem. “Navigating a dynamic automotive ecosystem” will drive the fair towards new heights, as it builds an integrated platform for technological innovation, internet-based content and cross-sector cooperation.
