Editor’s Note

Diagnostic Discipline It’s the part of our work that demands the most of our intelligence

Missing something like this can shake your self-confidence.

A

bove all other creatures, we humans are supposed to have the gift of reason. It’s why we’ve survived and now rule the earth -- for good or ill, depending on your viewpoint.

This wonderful faculty allows us to make decisions on the basis of what our senses tell us, patterns we recognize, and what we can “see” that will work to solve problems.

They call classical Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 to 322 B.C.) “the father of logic,” but humans had been using that discipline for thousands of years before his birth, just not in such a formalized way. After all, mankind couldn’t have invented the bow and arrow or the wheel, harnessed fire, or built the pyramids without reasoning.

That brings me to the skill known as “diagnosis,” or “troubleshooting,” which most automotive service technicians have in a very high degree indeed. While there’s a great deal of manual intelligence necessary for actually replacing parts, we all have to use extreme mental discipline and even imagination to determine exactly what needs to be done and why. That’s what elevates what we do from a trade to a profession. I don’t think any one of us who takes our work seriously appreciates a “shotgun” diagnostician, otherwise known as a “parts hanger.” You know, the kind of character who starts replacing things until the problem goes away. They detract from the reputation we’ve earned through diligent learning, either by reading or hands-on experience, usually both.

What got me started on this topic is the article in this issue of Aftermarket International entitled “Finding All Kinds of Leaks Efficiently.” While this topic isn’t the most highly-technical type of diagnosis compared to, say, finding problems in electronic engine management systems, it still requires reasoning and a logical approach.

Here are the steps I suggest you should take when you’re faced with any troubleshooting challenge: • Step back and look at the vehicle and the situation to get what’s called “the big picture.” I’ve been tricked into wasting time doing complicated electronic testing for a driveability issue in a pristine-looking vehicle when I should’ve seen the surprisingly huge number on the odometer that would’ve pointed me toward a failure of internal engine parts (disintegrating timing-chain tensioners that threw the cams out of synchronization).

• Give everything that could possibly be involved in the current complaint a careful visual examination under a strong light. You might be surprised by what it reveals, and thus reduce the time spent on diagnosis. We once saw a case of serious electrical system failure that was due to a broken tailpipe -- the hot exhaust was misdirected in such a way that it melted the rear wiring harness. I remember spinning my diagnostic wheels when presented with a van that had maybe a dozen trouble codes, and I started off by testing sensors. What was really wrong was that a bundle of wires had fallen down so that it was sawed through by the accessory belt.

• Use two other senses besides your eyesight: hearing and smell. How does the engine sound when you crank it? After it’s warmed up? Do you notice the odor of antifreeze, vaporizing motor oil, or a rich exhaust? Don’t ignore these clues.

• Conclusion jumping is a dangerous sport. Don’t just assume that the problem is due to suchand-such a cause because that was the first thing that popped into your mind. Shooting from the hip and telling your customer that his or her car needs a module or a sensor, only to find that the fuel pump is actually at fault, shakes his or her confidence in you and your confidence in yourself.

Approach the trouble with an open mind, then do some testing.

• Don’t let respect for tradition keep you from approaching a problem from a new direction. For example, if you’ve been taught to look for spark first in a no-start situation, think about spraying starting fluid into the intake, then twisting the key. If the engine fires up, you know you’ve got both spark and compression, but not fuel.

• Over the years, I’ve become a stickler for the basics. Check the essentials first. In the case of engine work, for example, that means compression, camshaft drive, fuel pressure, the duct downstream of the MAF for holes, the condition of the spark plugs and the oxygen sensor, etc.

Only then should you embark on high-tech diagnostics.

t’s an immutable scientific fact: Anywhere there’s a liquid or a gas under pressure or vacuum, there’s the potential for leaks. Automotive fluids do wonderful things if kept in their proper place, but anywhere else they make a mess. Gasses are essential to internal combustion and air conditioning, but if they escape or enter where they shouldn’t they interfere with proper operation.

Along with plumbers, we automotive mechanics/service technicians battle leaks every day. Sometimes their source is obvious, but all too often they’re difficult to find, even mysterious.

The best engineer in the world certainly wouldn’t be able to locate and identify them in every case, and may not do as well as we in the trenches of auto repair can because of our finely-honed common sense and our vast experience. Regardless, we must stop leakage, whether in or out. That’s the reason for this article.

of refrigeration, what’s the first logical step? Our advice is to verify the complaint by checking the temperature at the dash ducts with either a non-contact infrared pyrometer, or a mechanical thermometer. If indeed all you are seeing is ambient temperature, it’s time for a careful diagnosis.

Attach your gauge set and see if there is any refrigerant charge present. A full system should show pressure in psi (pounds per square inch) roughly equal to the ambient temperature in Fahrenheit. Most Aftermarket International readers deal in the metric system, so do the conversion. If there’s enough pressure to engage the compressor clutch, leakage may not be the problem.

When there’s too little pressure in the system to allow refrigeration to occur, start with the obvious: Examine all the connections and the compressor seal for evidence of escaping oil. This will require a bright light and some discipline in following the lines and hoses. Frequently, you’ll see where the oil is getting out without resorting to any other leakdetection method.

Even more frequently, however, a minor leak will not disclose itself. So, you need a logical procedure. Recover any refrigerant that’s left, then use a good vacuum pump to draw the system down as far as possible. Note the negative reading on the gauge, then shut the pump off and do something else for a half hour or so. If the vacuum has held, there is probably no leak of any consequence, and the lack of air conditioning is due to some other factor. On the other hand, if the vacuum has deteriorated a route of ingress is present.

If the latter is the case, how do you find the gap? There are two good methods, both of which require that you at least partially charge the system with refrigerant.

Electronic leak detectors have a spotty reputation with technicians, but the most modern versions work fairly well.

Install enough refrigerant to get the compressor clutch circuit to engage, then “sniff ” every component involved in refrigeration. Pay particular attention to duct closest to the evaporator (fan on “low”), which may implicate what some people call the “cooling coil.”

Then there’s the method we prefer above all others: Inject fluorescing dye, run the system, and examine all the joints and parts with a good UV (Ultra-Violet) light (call it a “black” light, if you prefer). Since the evaporator is buried in the dash, concentrate on what’s coming out of the condensate drain tube -- catch it on a sheet of white paper. An unintended refrigerant escape route will jump out at you in bright yellow/green.

Where finding the leak is concerned, it’s unfortunate that the location of the drip may not be anywhere near the actual source. The liquid lubricant tends to run along inclined surfaces, and air currents under and around the engine will blow it all over.

The repair job itself may be as simple and inexpensive as replacing a valve cover gasket or a pressure sending unit, or as involved as pulling the transmission or even the engine to install a new rear main crankshaft seal. So, it’s extremely important that you do diligent diagnosis.

Ideally, you should begin with a thorough steam or compressed air/solvent cleaning (some shops we know of refuse to work on dirty engines -- they automatically add steam cleaning to the bill, and they say they hardly ever hear a complaint), which will make finding the leak easier while actually improving the resale value of the car.

LOOK SEE AND PRESSURE The first logical diagnostic step is a careful visual exam under a strong light, but as already mentioned, that may not lead you to the component that’s bleeding. Fortunately, there are more accurate means of investigation. A time-honored procedure is the use of aerosol foot powder, which works best with everything clean. Spray the white stuff over suspect areas and a leak will often become apparent.

If you’re still not sure where the trouble lies, you can resort to low- or high- pressure testing. For the former, turn your air compressor regulator down to 0.3 Bar (4.5 psi) or so, rig up a tight connection between your blow gun nozzle and the dipstick tube (a length of soft hose and two clamps will do it), pull the PCV valve, and plug its grommet. Tape the gun’s trigger in the “on” position, then mix up some sudsy detergent and water and brush it over likely seams. Bubbles will tip you off. If there’s a

big hole somewhere, you’ll hear it -- narrow down its location with a hose held to your ear. For high-pressure testing, set your compressor’s to about 7 Bar (100 psi), remove the oil pressure sending unit, and screw in whatever adaptors is needed to tap into the oiling system. Use the soapy water and listen as above.

This is especially useful for finding leaky casting plugs.

CAN’T BE BEATEN All those methods, however, pale beside the champion: Fluorescent dye and UV light detection. We were always impressed with how well this worked even many years ago when we used a weak 15W florescent tube, which required that the shop lights be off and the windows shaded. The one we use now has 10 times that wattage. It’s so powerful ambient light doesn’t really affect its use, and you can be a surprising distance from the leak and still see it.

The procedure is simple. Pour 30 cc (one ounce) of the proper fluorescent tracer dye into the crankcase (it won’t hurt anything, and dissipates in 500 km or so), and let the engine run for half an hour. If the seepage is minimal, take it for a drive or ask the customer to come back the next day. Although cleaning the engine isn’t really necessary, it’s worthwhile if the grime is thick. Then, look around under the light. Use a shop mirror to take those ultraviolet rays where the light unit can’t fit or be aimed. The offending area will show up in bright yellow.

We especially remember using this on a V6 with a small, but chronic, drip at the bottom of the bell housing. After the vehicle was driven for a day with the dye in the crankcase, there was still no evidence of that tell-tale fluoresent glow in any of the places we expected to find it. Then we shot the beam forward from underneath and there was a thin but unmistakable yellow line along the back of the head/block seam. While it wasn’t bad enough to warrant such an expensive repair yet, we’d never have found the problem at all with any other method.

Seepage of coolant will likely result in the characteristic smell of antifreeze (it’s sometimes described as “sugary”), and eventually overheating from a low level. A leak at a hose connection or gasket may be plain to the eye, but if it’s in an area that’s obscured by other components, or in the heater core, locating the source can be a challenge.

TRANS When there’s an accumulation of slippery liquid at the bottom of the transmission or transaxle, the first thing to do is determine if it is ATF or motor oil. Wipe it off with a white cloth and look for the red color that would indicate the former.

Likely weep points are CV or U-joint yoke seals, transmission pan or housing seams, or fluid cooling lines. You’ll have to pardon us for repeating that UV dye detection is the best troubleshooting path.

POWER STEERING Fluid leaks in this system can be hard to locate. Sometimes you’ll see a low level in the pump reservoir, but no evidence of escaping liquid. Squeeze the bellows of a rack and pinion unit and you may find that they’re full of fluid. Another tricky point is that if one bellows is awash, that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the leaky side because fluid can pass through the air tube. If you’re going to replace the unit, this doesn’t matter.

If overhaul is your intention, you should remove both bellows, clean out the rack housing, then operate the system to observe the seepage directly.

with a cloth, and run the engine while watching under a strong spotlight. Shut it off, and touch the weep hole in the bottom of the water pump with a white cloth -- failure of the shaft seal is very common, especially if there’s a big number on the odometer, or there’s been an overheating incident. It’s important to note that some leakage only occurs after normal operating temperature is reached.

A cooling system pressure tester is handy. You can pump it up beyond the radiator cap’s blow-of point and, again, do a visual examination. And here’s another place where the UV light method is often the answer. Just be sure to use the right dye.

Brake fluid that’s getting out through a damaged caliper piston or wheel cylinder seal, a badly-rusted line, a faulty flare connection, or a damaged hose is a dangerous situation.

The manufacturers of UV dye warn against using it in brake hydraulic systems, so this becomes a matter of safely raising the car and using your eyes and, again, a bright light. Also, an inspection mirror will allow you to see lines that would otherwise be hidden over or behind the chassis.

The use of the proper dye and a good UV light will help you zero-in on even minute oil seepage.

FINDING LEAKS

VACUUM When you suspect an intake vacuum leak, especially at the head/manifold seam, an excellent procedure is to direct a small stream of propane at possible areas. Even with modern electronic engine management, rpm should rise temporarily where the flammable gas is entering the cylinders. A variation here is to watch the short-term fuel trim (SFT) numbers and other data on a scan tool, but that procedure belongs in an article on electronics diagnosis. Once you’ve found a likely location, you might even be able to feel the slight air movement with your fingers. Sometimes the cause is simply a failed gasket, O-ring, or chemical seal. Or, perhaps the manifold has warped.

Many diagnostic technicians consider the smoke machine the best thing to use in this situation. Put the nozzle into any convenient hose or fitting where engine vacuum is present, turn the machine on (engine off, of course), and watch. We once identified an EGR valve with a bad diaphragm this way after the car had been to several other shops with no success.

A simple intake problem that would be embarrassing to overlook is a hole or rip in the duct between the sensor and the throttle body, which admits unmeasured “false” air and leans out the mixture. Our first encounter with this was when a car was being driven into the bay next to ours, and it was running badly -- it made us think of an old carbureted vehicle with a huge vacuum leak, say from a disconnected brake booster hose.

While the other technician was getting his favorite scan tool out , we popped the hood and took a look. Thinking of MAF

sensors, we felt under the duct to the throttle body and our fingers went right through. So, air was getting in downstream of where measurement of intake mass was taken, thus causing the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to provide an injector pulse width that was much too short, thus leaning out the air/ fuel ratio (an open PCV can do the same thing).

Just to back up the obvious, we put some duct tape over the holes, started it up, and it idled and revved like the good engine it was. That’s what we call efficient diagnosis, and it illustrates two important points: One, always check the basics before you engage in high-tech troubleshooting. And, two, OBD (On Board Diagnostics) can’t do everything.

EVAP AND EXHAUST When you get an illuminated MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) and an OBD II DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) for fuel evaporative control, the consensus of opinion as to the best way to find the leak is to “smoke” the system. Typical escape routes are the electro-magnetic valves and the line connections. Unless, of course, the vehicle’s owner forgot to tighten the gas cap.

Finally, on occasion you’ll get a complaint about noise from the exhaust system. While a rust hole, a loose joint, or a broken gasket should be easy to locate, sometimes it’s not. In those cases, nothing we can think of comes close to a smoke machine for efficiency. You can wrap the nozzle in a shop cloth and jam it into the tailpipe, or remove the oxygen or air/fuel ratio sensor and inject the smoke there -- stuff a rag into the tailpipe. It won’t be long before the leak reveals itself. 

Understanding ABS and Stability Control

How they work, how they cooperate, and important service tips

T

he mention of automotive safety will make most people immediately think of seat belts/shoulder harnesses and air bags. True, these devices have saved thousands of lives and prevented many, many serious injuries over the years, but wouldn’t it be vastly more desirable to avoid a collision in the first place? That’s where better brakes and stability control come in. Driver and passenger restraints are passive, whereas preventing accidents is active.

LIKE PUMPING THE PEDAL, ONLY BETTER The introduction of ABS (Antilock Braking Systems) was a safety advance as important as the switch from mechanical to hydraulic brakes, which began in 1921 with the Dusenberg, or the auto makers’ wholesale adoption of disc brakes in the 1960s. Although the idea goes all the way back to the 1920s, and Robert Bosch patented a wholly mechanical system in 1936, viable and dependable ABS didn’t start appearing on 12

production cars until the 1980s since it had to wait for the development of affordable and reliable electronic controls.

Even with such a long history, however, we believe a review of the basic principles and components is appropriate here because a solid understanding of ABS operation will help you in diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.

The essential idea, of course, is to prevent wheel lockup during hard deceleration on dry pavement, or any braking action whatsoever in slippery conditions. This greatly increases control (a locked wheel cannot be steered) and reduces stopping distances, and it can also save an expensive set of tires from getting flat spots from dragging on the road surface. To put this another way, during a panic stop, the driver, not being properly trained, applies the brakes as hard as possible. This causes the brakes to overpower the grip between the tire and the pavement. The wheels are now locked and steering inputs prove futile. The driver has lost control of the vehicle.

SOLENOID VALVES

The basic operating principles are easy to understand. The system watches the speed of each wheel by means of gear-like reluctors or exciters mounted on the disc or axle and hermeticallysealed pickup coil sensors that count the teeth as they pass. These are typically AC pulse generators, but some late models have what Mercedes-Benz calls “Active Wheel Speed Sensors,” which generate a DC square wave. Even though it’s a square wave, the principle remains the same. The faster the wave, the faster the wheel is traveling and vice versa.

The computer continually monitors and compares this input, which means it processes thousands of signals per second.

If the rotation of one wheel slows down more than that of the others during brake application, or deceleration does not match a profile in the microprocessor’s memory, the control module responds instantly by sending commands to electro-magnetic fluid valves, which freeze or release hydraulic pressure to that wheel, then reapply it when the tire speeds up again. This cycle is repeated up to 15 times per second -- the best driver in the world could never pump the pedal that rapidly, and obviously he or she can only pulse the system as a whole, not by individual wheels.

With ABS, the brakes can be applied as hard as possible, and the driver doesn’t need to give them any further thought while he or she concentrates on steering.

During normal braking, ABS watches and waits. Hydraulic pressure simply passes through the valves as if they were not there.

On an early RWD front/rear split system, there was one inlet and one outlet solenoid for each front caliper, and a third pair for the rear brakes, making a total of six in the valve body.

More modern versions have a separate pair for each rear wheel, so control is completely individualized as to the corners of the vehicle.

As we said, the computer activates these solenoids appropriately to tailor fluid pressure to conditions. When a wheel begins to skid, the circuit to the normally-open inlet valve is completed, making it block the movement of fluid into the caliper. If that corrective action is not sufficient to stop lockup, the normally-closed outlet valve is opened, which allows pressure to be relieved through a bypass to an accumulator and a return pump so the pads or shoes can retract. No sooner has this been accomplished than the signals are reversed and fluid pressure is again applied to the caliper.

This continues on/off at a rate determined by traction.

SMARTER STOPPING The electronics involved are interesting. As in the case of EFI, the computer monitors sensor inputs, looks at its preprogrammed set of responses, and manipulates output. Since a computer can react to these changes quicker than any driver could, braking distances are reduced while steering control is maintained. Believe it or not, this simple explanation can be applied to even the most complicated integrated systems: inputs, logic, and outputs. Knowing how these function together will allow you to test them. This, coupled with an understanding of the computer’s logic, lets you predict and test output controls.

In a typical integrated system, there are two co-processors, which not only monitor sensor signals, but each other as well, providing a nearly fail-safe redundancy. If the two computers do not agree on something, the system reverts to non-ABS hydraulics, and a dash light comes on to warn the driver that the car no longer has that extra margin of safety.

Wheel speed sensors are the most vulnerable parts of these systems. Here you can see a healthy AC signal as the wheel is spun by hand.

TYPES AND TRACTION CONTROL There are two types of systems, add-on and integrated. As the name implies, the add-on variety is used in conjunction with a regular master cylinder and vacuum booster. The integrated approach uses a single unit that combines the master, a hydraulic booster, and the ABS modulator. It is compact, but generally more expensive to manufacture and more complicated to service.

For boost, add-on systems simply rely on the normal vacuum type, whereas integrated ABS employs hydraulic force either from the power steering circuit or an electric pump mounted toward the rear of the master cylinder. In a common example, the electric pump is energized through a pressure switch for six to 10 seconds at a time to maintain over 140 Bar (2,000 psi) in a nitrogen-charged accumulator, enough for numerous power assisted stops in case of pump failure.

We should mention another worthwhile feature having ABS aboard makes easy and inexpensive for the carmakers to add: the Traction Control System (TCS), which is also known as EDS (Electronic Diff Lock System from VW), TRAC (Lexus), etc. When the wheel speed sensors signal the computer that one driving wheel is spinning, TCS acts as an electronic limited slip differential by applying the brake of the that wheel, thus sending the torque to the other side. a farm tractor with a right and left brake pedal that gives you the ability to stop the wheel that has lost traction, you’ll understand the concept. It also uses a “throttle relaxer” for power control, and since the engine can produce enough drag to cause skidding on ice or snow when you lift your foot off the accelerator suddenly, some systems raise rpm when the electronics sense this situation.

COMMON TROUBLES As far as service is concerned, you will definitely need the specific factory procedures, which are far too detailed to fit into a magazine article. We can, however, give you some important general information and tips.

First, what kinds of problems are the most common? “On ABS, wheel speed sensors are at the top of the list of failures,” a brake training specialist tells Aftermarket International.

Another tech trainer agrees, saying, “As far as the ABS problems we’re seeing are concerned, the first is speed sensors with metallic particles sticking to the sensor nose. This may cause system default, or make it constantly go into antilock mode. We call that ‘false modulation.’”

A successful shop owner expands on that. As he tells us, “On wheel speed sensors, it’s usually an internal break in a wire. Be careful doing any wheel work because those sensors are delicate.” Yet another authority tells us, “The number-one problem we’re seeing is a broken wheel speed sensor wire. The second thing is rust where the sensor mounts. This also causes difficulty when other work is done. As time goes on, we’re

going to see more and more corrosion in the electrical parts.”

A brake troubleshooting expert says, “Make sure the air gaps are correct, and the sensors and tone wheels are clean with no iron filings or debris in the vanes, which can give an erratic speed signal, set a code, and put the system into default.”

A senior trainer mentions a related point that can ruin your day: “We’re getting calls frequently after a technician has done a basic brake job,” he says. “Now, the brake warning light is on.

The trouble is they’re not opening the bleeder when they push the piston back, so all the sediment in the caliper is getting forced up into the ABS unit.”

SERVICE TIPS • On integrated ABS, never attempt any repair until you have discharged all that potentially dangerous pressure from the accumulator. Pump the brake pedal at least 40 times with the key off. You should be able to feel when boost is gone.

• Again on the integrated type, do not fill the fluid reservoir above the MAX line or it could overflow when the accumulator discharges.

• It is entirely possible that you will get a complaint about a pulsating pedal during hard stops. Explain to the driver that this is simply feedback from the master cylinder being replenished, and is an indication that the system is working as it should.

• With AC-generating wheel speed sensors, you can start off diagnosis with a resistance test to make sure you do not have a shorted sensor, but it is best to monitor AC voltage while spinning the wheel by hand. Each wheel should produce

a similar AC voltage -- between .5 and 1.5V, depending on how fast you’re spinning them. Sensors may have different resistances and AC voltage output, so it’s best to compare one side of the vehicle to the other. In the case of the active wheel speed sensor, a graphing multi-meter or lab scope will illustrate the wave pattern. If this is not available to you, a DMM capable of DC V, Duty Cycle and Frequency will allow you to monitor the consistency of the signal. If you detect the DC voltage dropping out, the duty cycle changing significantly, or the frequency changing rapidly, you probably have a bad sensor.

Keep in mind that these are three-wire sensors that have a fivevolt reference and a ground as well as a signal line. Verify these other wires before replacing a sensor.

• Fortunately, aside from wheel speed sensors, the electronics of ABS have shown themselves to be extremely dependable, and even a basic scan tool will point you to a particular wheel speed sensor that has developed trouble. Most of the other problems are going to be hydraulic: water, corrosion, and dirt in the lines and valve body. Explain to your customers that brake fluid changes at least every two years are the best insurance against expensive repairs.

THE NEXT STEP IN SAFETY The operation of the stability control systems found on most late-model cars is fascinating and complex. Although it is known generically in the automotive industry as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), the system has other names given it by various vehicle manufacturers. Mercedes-Benz calls it the Electronic Stability Program (which yields the clever acronym ESP), Subaru names it Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), Robert Bosch calls it Automatic Stability Regulation (ASR), etc.

Regardless, the basic principles are the same.

The purpose of ESC is to avoid dangerous situations that could lead to an out-of-control condition and result in fishtailing or vehicle rollovers. Basically, it works by analyzing the input data from several sensors and determining if the vehicle has strayed from the driver’s intended path. To regain stability, the system temporarily reduces engine power, engages traction controls, and selectively applies the brakes of individual wheels by making use of the capabilities of ABS. The system resists both oversteer and understeer. In curves or during cornering, the stability control module determines the line the driver was intending to follow by means of the steering angle sensor, compares it to the signals from other sensors, and engages the brakes of the appropriate wheels to suppress the unsafe condition and stabilize the vehicle.

The system is alerted to a dangerous situation by the signal from the “yaw” sensor, yaw being rotation around the vertical axis of the vehicle. Several other sensor inputs such as that on lateral G force are also considered in the module’s calculations.

If there’s a variance away from the direction the steering angle sensor’s signal indicates, action is taken. In the simplest terms, during oversteer the rear brake on the outside of the curve is engaged. If understeer is encountered, it increases hydraulic pressure to the inside rear wheel.

STABILITY CONTROL IN THE SHOP • Many car owners aren’t even aware that this safety feature is aboard, and when it is activated they may misinterpret it as a malfunction. A patient explanation from you will enhance your reputation.

• Stability control is engineered to work within very specific parameters. That makes the proper size, tread depth, and inflation of the tires is important. Oversized aftermarket wheels or the wrong or neglected tires could upset the system’s proper function.

• The braking system as a whole has to be maintained to a higher level than in the past. Stability control’s foundation is brake-critical. Excessively worn or over-worked parts could compromise safe actuation in an emergency situation.

• An off-center steering wheel will cause a conflict, resulting in a fault code and illumination of the warning light. Another common cause is spilled liquid (coffee, soda, etc.) on the steering wheel so that it finds its way into the angle sensor and covers the optical sensors.

• With the integration of these safety systems, CAN communication is critical to keeping the warning lights off, so a good scan tool is a tremendous advantage in this area of diagnosis.

• Brake switch malfunction is one of the most common reasons for stability control fault codes. Be careful during installation.

• A stability control fault doesn’t always indicate trouble in the system itself. A braking or related sensor problem may cause faults and shut-down. The picture must be looked at as a whole, taking into account all faults in all systems. 

AAPEX 2017 Spotlights High Tech Automotive Aftermarket AAPEX 2017 demonstrated beyond a doubt that the $740 billion global automotive aftermarket is a high-tech industry being reshaped by the many new products, technologies and services that enable mobility and connectivity. The event took place Tuesday, Oct. 31, through Thursday, Nov. 2, at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bruce Ronning Named Tenneco Vice President and General Manager, North America Aftermarket Tenneco announced on Jan. 9 that Bruce Ronning has been appointed vice president and general manager, North America Aftermarket.

The announcement follows the decision by Joe Pomaranski, senior vice president and general manager, Global Aftermarket, to retire from Tenneco. Pomaranski had been leading the North America Aftermarket organization on an interim basis.

Ronning has spent the last two years as vice president and general manager, Tenneco Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Aftermarket.

He joined Tenneco in 2016 from Johnson Controls where he spent 17 years in management roles of increasing responsibility, including vice president and general manager of the company’s Asia Pacific region. Prior to that, he held a similar role for the EMEA region.

Ronning has extensive aftermarket sales experience gained earlier in his career with Johnson Controls as executive commercial director for Southwest Europe. Ronning also served as executive director of the U.S./Canada wholesale aftermarket, and held various sales and marketing roles during his tenure with the company. His early career included sales roles with Snap-On Inc. and Allen Test Products.

Michael Cardone III Named Executive Chairman of The Board Cardone Industries has announced the appointment of Michael Cardone III as the executive chairman of its board of directors, as well as the addition of two new board members: Dena Moore and Bill Strahan.

Greg Johnson to Succeed Greg Henslee as O’Reilly CEO; Jeff Shaw to Become COO O’Reilly Automotive has announced that Co-President Greg Johnson will be promoted to CEO and co-president on May 8, succeeding Greg Henslee, who is poised to become the company’s executive vice chairman at O’Reilly’s annual shareholders’ meeting in May. Additionally, Co-President Jeff Shaw will be promoted to chief operating officer and co-president, and David O’Reilly will remain executive chairman of the board.

Automechanika Dubai Gears Up For Robust Business Growth

G

lobal automotive aftermarket manufacturers are preparing for a period of robust business growth in the Middle East, according to a press release, while new research shows car sales and demand for spare parts and auto services is swinging upward.

In fact, according to the release from Automechanika Dubai, the market is poised to surpass $15 billion by 2021 based on projected demand for parts and auto services.

Several brands expected to experience higher demand— including IQR, producer of lubricants under the brand name Matrix; Autopumps; and ALCO Filters—will be at the Automechanika Dubai 2018 trade fair, along with more than 2,000 exhibitors from 57 countries, according to the release. Automechanika Dubai is the Middle East and Africa’s largest exhibition for the automotive aftermarket and services industry.

IQR, a Spanish producer, is launching its operations in the Gulf region in order to find new partners, according to the press release, while U.K.-based Autopumps is “testing the regional waters for the supply of its aftermarket

parts—not only for the automotive industry, but for industrial, agricultural, and marine applications,” too.

ALCO Filters, which is headquartered in Cyprus, is “looking to build on its millions of dollars of revenue generated every year in the Middle East for its vast range of 3,500 filters, after establishing a regional presence years ago,” the press release states.

The exhibitors have good reason to be so optimistic: new data from analysts TechSci Research suggests an uptick in passenger and commercial vehicle sales that, coupled with an increase of cars-in-use across the Middle East, “should have a positive flow-on effect on the automotive aftermarket,” according to the press release.

In fact, it’s TechSci’s research that indicates revenue from engine and car components, systems, tires, and auto accessories “will surpass the $15 billion mark by 2021, compared to approximately $12.4 billion in 2017,” according to the press release. And if that is the case, sales revenue will have grown at a compound annual rate of 4.9 percent.

“That’s welcomed by the likes of ALCO, IQR, and Autopumps,” points out the press release, “along with the hundreds of other exhibitors making their preparations ahead of Automechanika Dubai’s 16th edition,” which will take place from May 1 through May 3 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

At the three-day event, long-time exhibitor ALCO Filters will launch its new filter range made for cars, trucks, earth-moving equipment, and stationary engines.

“We’ve been exhibiting at Automechanika Dubai since 2006, and have generated cumulatively more than $10 million of new business in the Middle East,” Loizos Louca, ALCO Filters’ managing director, said in a written statement. “Having a strong presence in the region, we’re keen to meet up with existing clients at Automechanika Dubai 2018 and expand our clientele base through meeting new prospects. The fact that 52 percent of visitors to the trade fair are international—coupled with the value of the Middle East auto aftermarket—makes this exhibition attractive to attend.”

José Cruces, CEO of IQR, which will debut as an exhibitor at Automechanika Dubai 2018, said in a written statement that participating in the event is part of an overall company strategy to find new partners in countries where it has no presence. “We are now present in 35 countries and all our efforts are focused toward expanding our international network to become a global brand,” he said. “Also, we’re launching our operations in the Gulf Cooperation Council and therefore, being at [this event] enables us to show participants our brand and our values.”

Meanwhile, Autopumps will launch various products at Automechanika Dubai 2018, including an expansion of its commercial and industrial pumps range. “We’re also showcasing our expertise in the manufacture and supply of commercial camshafts, rockers and engine valves for off highway, agricultural, marine and heavy goods vehicle applications,” Bill Cotton, owner of Autopumps, said in a written statement.

“We’ve identified the Middle East as a strong market, which is growing in the commercial vehicle parts sector,” Cotton, who also serves as Autopump’s managing director, continued. “Dubai is the regional hub for business and a standout player on the global stage.

Automechanika Dubai is one of the key trade shows in the commercial parts sector, and we’re using the platform to meet with key industry contacts and decision makers, and strengthen business in the region.”

Automechanika Dubai 2018 is organized by Messe Frankfurt Middle East. It includes more than six product sections, including parts and components; electronics and systems; accessories and customizing; repair and

maintenance; car wash, care and reconditioning; and tires and batteries.

Automechanika Dubai 2018’s “global influence is highlighted by the presence of 25 country pavilions and 36 international trade associations, while 90 percent of exhibitors and 52 percent of visitors are expected to come from outside of the UAE,” according to the press release.

“The 16th edition [of the event] will also reflect a sense of renewed optimism in the automotive aftermarket, where emerging trends and disruptive technologies are steering the industry toward a bold new future.”

Despite the recent slowdown across the region, car sales in the Middle East in the long term will recover, the event insists through its press release, citing analysts Frost & Sullivan’s estimates that light vehicle sales will grow at a compound annual growth rate of eight percent, reaching 4.1 million units by 2021. “That’ll put the total number of cars in operation in the region at 41.36 million, compared to an estimated 37 million in 2017,” according to Frost & Sullivan’s data, the press release states.

“Passenger cars constitute a major vehicle segment in the Middle East and Africa, while stabilizing oil prices and significant government infrastructure in a number of regional countries will also boost growth in the commercial vehicle segment in the coming years,” Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said in a written statement. “Over the past 15 years, Automechanika Dubai has succeeded in bringing together leading automotive aftermarket brands to this fast-growing region, providing an important opportunity to connect with new prospects, have faceto-face interactions with existing customers, create brand awareness, and position themselves as reliable suppliers of premium quality products and services.”

This year, Automechanika Dubai will return with its truck competence initiative, “where more than 1,500 exhibitors will showcase their products dedicated to the entire value chain in the truck sector, from truck parts and accessories to workshop equipment, body repairs, and care,” according to the press release. The event will also “feature the popular Automechanika academy—a series of seminars, presentations, and workshops about key issues and regulations that affect the automotive aftermarket,” as well as the African buyer-seller meet, which connects “suppliers with buyers from the world’s second largest continent,” the release says. 

NA PAACE Automechanika Mexico City—Mexico´s leading international trade fair for the automotive service industry targeting trade visitors from Latin and Central America—has announced new dates for its 2018 trade show: previously set for March, this year’s event returns to its summer date format, with the three-day event held from July 11 through 13.

In a press release, INA PAACE said its decision to move the event’s dates was “in response to market demand,” adding that the move “guarantees the most return on investment.”

According to show director Bridget Ferris, “Listening to our customers, this was a pivotal decision in ensuring the future success of the show. For this edition specifically, amending the dates allowed us to be considerate of the recent environmental issues and the impact on the business climate in Mexico.” She added, “We are pleased with the change and are confident that our return to July this year will only impact the show in a positive manner.”

Future INA PAACE events will be held in July, according to the release, to remain consistent.

According to the release, “the date change came only after

discussions with several of our exhibitors and attendees and their requests to go back to the summer season.” However, that date change has not affected its location: this year’s show will still be held at Mexico City’s Citibanamex, which offers attendees some 30,000 square meters of exhibition space.

“Global automotive industry professionals and media are in support and looking forward to the 2018 event,” the release states. INA PAACE says it expects more than 26,000 worldwide attendees and 600 exhibitors to present their latest products and services at the event.

or the first time, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA) will co-locate its annual International Big R Show with NACE Automechanika—a partnership, the APRA says, that will extend into subsequent years. The new, co-located event will take place from Aug. 8 through Aug. 10 in Atlanta, Georgia, according to a press release sent from the APRA. According to the APRA press release, the APRA Big R Show is North America’s leading networking and education event for the independent automotive remanufacturing industry, while NACE Automechanika is the largest U.S. trade show dedicated to both high-end technical and management-related training for automotive collision and service repair shops.

“APRA is thrilled to be partnering with NACE Automechanika,” APRA association manager Scott Parker said in the APRA release. “Our association’s mission is to create opportunities for members. This combined event will deliver on that as our industry continues to evolve.”

By combining these two events, in August and the future, APRA and NACE Automechanika hope to create new networking and education opportunities for exhibitors and attendees.

“With hundreds of exhibiting companies and thousands of attendees, NACE Automechanika Atlanta [and the APRA Big R] are set to lead the industry in a showcase of the latest

technology covering the entire spectrum of the automotive aftermarket,” the NACE Automechanika website says.

The APRA press release states, “the co-located Big R Show and NACE Automechanika events will establish the leading and fastest growing trade show for remanufacturing, collision, and service repair in North America,” adding that two future co-located events are confirmed: one in 2019 in Chicago, and a second in 2020, at a location that is yet to be determined.

APRA was founded Oct. 24, 1941, and is a collection of several dozen companies. Its membership has grown to hundreds of companies worldwide in the last 75 years. APRA “helps protect the industry through its government affairs efforts in Washington, D.C.,” the APRA press release says.

APRA also provides its members technical education and networking opportunities.

NACE Automechanika, on the other hand, is “the largest U.S. trade show dedicated to high-end technical and management-related training for automotive collision and service repair shops,” according to its website. The NACE Automechanika 2017 trade show, which was held in Chicago, included “more than 360 leading suppliers displayed new automotive service and repair technologies, while connecting to nearly 8,000 attendees,” according to a NACE Automechanika press release.

“NACE Automechanika succeeded in bringing buyers and sellers together on the show floor and in the training rooms, where we provided four days of high-quality education to automotive service and collision repair professionals,” Jim Savas, vice president and general manager of UBM’s Automotive group, said of last year’s event. “We also had very favorable responses from attendees who enjoyed the networking opportunities associated with several co-located events, including the Collision Industry Conference, the MSO Symposium and our new Business Outlook Conference.”

According to the NACE Automechanika press release, “highlights from the [2017] show floor included a showcase of products, services and interactive demonstrations from several exhibiting companies such as NAPA, Pro-Spot, Federal Mogul, Car-O-Liner, Tenneco and TTA Appraisal, among others. From diagnostic testing to new paint technology in the Spray Zone and welding techniques by key exhibitors, NACE Automechanika covered it all.”

Latin Auto Parts Expo: Connecting Distributors With Qualified Buyers

he fifth annual Latin Auto Parts Expo will take place from July 25 through 27, and will be held at the ATLAPA Convention Center in Panama City.

According to a press release, 357 exhibitors from 18 countries showed a variety of products at last year’s event, including but not limited to: accessories, custom parts, tools, equipment for auto repair and maintenance, auto body, and trim. And about 3,000 visitors from some 60 countries, including Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, and Costa Rica, attended.

“Over the course the three day [show], we met and received bona fide leads from Cost Rica, Panama, Jamaica, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and Chile,” Stuart Pinholster, director of sales and marketing for FTZ Industries, said in a written statement.

“We have already initiated discussions with two accounts on becoming a distributor for FTZ in their country. FTZ considered the show to be a great success, and hopefully these leads will generate additional revenue, allowing us to achieve our international goals.”

For the fourth year, the U.S. Department of Commerce has granted trade fair certification to the Latin America Auto Parts Expo, according to the press release. With this certification, the release states, “the commercial service of the Department of Commerce recognizes the show

organizer’s professional capability to organize a United States pavilion.” It also “endorses the event as an excellent opportunity to showcase U.S. products and services.”

The Latin America Auto Parts Expo aims to connect leading manufacturers and distributors of the auto parts industry with qualified buyers from Latin America and the Caribbean, “creating and growing the distribution of their products in the region,” the release states. “The objective of the trade show is to facilitate long-term commercial relationships,” it says.

Panama City is a strategic location for the trade show, according to an information sheet provided to Aftermarket International, because it has a duty-free zone, a stable, business-friendly democratic government, and strong currency—though U.S. dollars are accepted there too.

“Panama is an international air and ocean hub enabling travelers and cargo to reach Latin America, the Caribbean, and most of the globe,” the information sheet states.
