ne of the things the staff of Aftermarket International pride ourselves on is our global reach. In addition to distributing to more than 100 countries digitally, we mail physical copies of this magazine to as many relevant trade shows as possible.

But this isn’t always easy to accomplish because it involves the expense of printing and shipping extra copies to these events, as well as cooperating with the respective trade show managers. But we endeavor to make this happen because it helps us attract new readers and benefits our advertisers because they receive exposure to audiences they haven’t reached.

The two most important events we are present at are AAPEX and Automechanika Frankfurt. But there are many other trade shows we’re happy to work with and glad to be at, including Automechanikas Chicago, Dubai, Istanbul Moscow, Mexico City (INA PAACE) and Shanghai, as well as ATRA, Autopromotec, Big R, Expo Partes, ReMaTec and the Latin Auto Parts Expo. Some of these shows receive just our English edition, others receive just our Spanish edition, and some receive both.

Editorially this month, our technical editor, Bob Freudenberger, has written about operating and servicing variable valve timing systems, which enhance vehicles’ performance and efficiency. However, these systems can be a weak link and are especially vulnerable if they’re not maintained properly. Freudenberger also has written about how fuel trim can help technicians when diagnosing a problem. The engine management computer will indicate if it’s adding or subtracting fuel, but your job is to determine why. Additionally, look for articles about many of the trade shows at which this issue is being distributed.

Editor’s Note The Shoulders of Giants I feel awe, even reverence, whenever I read about the geniuses who laid the foundations of automotive technology.

E

very time I do the research for an article that involves historical perspective, such as the one on fuel trim in this issue of Aftermarket International, I find myself awed by the overwhelming genius of the scientists, inventors, and engineers whose work has made modern automotive transportation possible. They were motivated not just by the quest for wealth, which most of them did in fact achieve, but also by mechanical, practical curiosity and the desire to bend scientific principles to the service of mankind.

I’d like to mention some of my favorites: Blaise Pascal (1623-1662): The law named for this French scientist, mathematician, and philosopher provided the basis for the brake hydraulic system. Although the principles of physics are universal and timeless, the formulation of such a law gave mankind the understanding we needed to build upon. It’s simple, but profoundly important: Pressure change occurring anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted throughout the fluid such that the same change occurs everywhere.

Jean Joseph Étienne Lenoir (1822-1900):The Belgian engineer who developed the first successful internal combustion engine in 1858. He even invented the spark plug to go with it, which looks remarkably like what we have today.

Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta (1745-1827): This Italian physicist, chemist, and pioneer in electricity -- he invented the electrical battery.

Georg Simon Ohm (1789-1854): The German physicist and mathematician who described the relationship between voltage and current in what’s now known as Ohm’s Law, without an understanding of which very little in the way of electrical devices would exist. He built his work partly on that of Volta.

Charles Franklin Kettering (1876-1958): The American founder of Delco, and inventor of point-type ignition and the self-starter. He was also the head of research for General Motors from 1920 to 1947, and held 186 patents.

Soichiro Honda (1906-1991): This Japanese engineer and industrialist (with a great personality, I might add) oversaw the expansion of his company from a wooden shack building motorized bicycles in 1948 to one of the most innovative manufacturers on earth.

In his youth, he worked as a mechanic before starting his own auto repair business in 1928.

Actually, you could go all the way back to Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer Archimedes of Syracuse (287-212 BC) to find a shoulder to stand on -- where would we be without his work on the lever and the screw principle.

If you’re not familiar with the metaphor I used for the title of this column, it dates all the way back to the 12th century, but the most famous quote with it comes from Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727): “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

small amount of overlap (when intake and exhaust valves are open). But that resulted in power output that was less than the potential maximum. Plenty of overlap allows the cylinders to start breathing in before the spent charge is completely expelled, helps in that expulsion, and brings in a bigger air/fuel charge for the next cycle. To put it another way, if you want maximum horsepower, you have to put up with a ragged idle and dirty low speed operation, the extreme being the awesome shaking and popping you hear from a drag racing car’s engine as it maneuvers up to the starting. It might be the thrilling sound of power barely kept under control, but it’s hardly suitable for a passenger car.

ou probably feel pretty safe where your understanding of engine internals is concerned. Surely they’ll have to stay purely mechanical in spite of all the sweeping changes in automotive technology that are swamping us with waves of new information. The idea of electronics doing anything inside an engine may seem farfetched, even incredible.

What would it be, anyway?

If you think that, you’re over two decades behind the learning curve. All the major car manufacturers brought electronics into the hitherto wholly mechanical realm of internal engine operation in the form of microprocessor-controlled valve timing many years ago. Variable lift followed shortly thereafter.

the speed of the crankshaft. That’s why its sprocket, gear, or pulley is twice as big. Valve timing is measured in degrees of crankshaft rotation. Since the crank has to turn 720 deg. to spin the cam 360, a grind with, say, 260 deg. of duration holds the valve off its seat through 130 deg. of cam rotation.

If you’ve ever built a high-performance engine, you might be familiar with a little item called an offset cam key. This is basically just a woodruff key with a step in it that indexes the sprocket to one side or the other by two to four degrees, allowing you to advance or retard valve timing as you see fit to shift the power curve up or down the rpm scale. A variation on this is the offset bushing used for pin-type sprockets. Having the valves open and close earlier gives better low-end and mid-range power, while the opposite contributes to higher horsepower output as you near redline. Obviously, you have to choose one or the other, and, with single camshaft designs, intakes and exhausts are equally affected, which is less helpful than just altering inlet timing would be.

Dynamic adjustment was the next logical step, and there was at least one mechanical set up available through the highperformance aftermarket that retarded valve timing as rpm rose. It worked, but could only make changes based on speed, not other engine operating conditions, so it left something to be desired. That something was provided by – what else?

– electronic logic. Combined with the separate intake cam of a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) engine, the potential improvement became well worth the effort.

EARLY NISSAN EXAMPLE In 1990, Nissan called this feature Nissan Valve Timing Control System (NVTCS). A hydraulic mechanism in the hub of each chain-driven intake cam changed inlet timing relative to outlet timing. At low and intermediate speeds, earlier intake valve closing improved air pumping efficiency and idle quality. At high speeds, later closing enhanced torque output.

To achieve this phase change, oil pressure was used to move the intake camshaft backward along a helical gear, twisting it slightly. A solenoid operated the hydraulic control valve according to a signal from the computer, which takes air flow, rpm, coolant temperature, and throttle position into account before issuing commands. When the solenoid is energized, the cam is advanced to give 28 deg. of intake/exhaust overlap.

The basic computer strategy is to determine how much duty cycle it will provide to each cam actuator solenoid to allow oil pressure to pass through the cam actuator thus moving the camshaft gear on the end of the camshaft to accommodate an advance or retard position relative to that of the crank. A lot can go wrong, such as a sticking solenoid or actuator, or even clogged oil passages. Blame poor oil maintenance, or wear and tear from high mileage. There are also electrical failures such as open or shorted actuator solenoid circuits or a possible failure of the solenoid driver within the computer.

At the front of this Mercedes-Benz engine, you can see the cam actuator solenoid mounted with three Torx-head bolts. The cam sensor for that actuator is to the left of it. Each actuator has its own cam sensor so the computer can monitor what position the camshaft is in relative to that of the crankshaft.

UPSCALE EUROPEAN As you might expect, Mercedes-Benz, with all its engineering might and financial resources, wasn’t about to be left behind in the technology wars. So, it introduced an all new SL for 1990. At the time, there were two versions, the 300 with its 3L in-line six (it was unusual to see such an engine with a 7,000 rpm redline).

The 500 was powered by the M119 5L V8. Both engines had separate intake and exhaust overhead camshafts (OHCs) and automatic variable intake valve timing.

The electro-hydraulic mechanisms that give the intake cams a slight twist to vary the amount of overlap work in pretty much the same way as Nissan’s, incorporating oil pressure and a helical gear. As with the Nissan, the German design made it possible to achieve low emissions and a smooth idle and still have good mid-range torque and top-end horsepower.

At idle, the inlet camshafts stayed in their normal position (on the V8, the intake valves opened at 50 deg. Before top dead center). From 2,000 to 4,700 in the six, and 2,000 to 5,000 in the V8, they were advanced. They opened and closed their valves earlier. Above 4,700 or 5,000, respectively, the system returned the camshafts to their normal retarded position, increasing volumetric efficiency as the intakes closed later. Except for mode transition, which took about a second, one or the other position was chosen. The range of automatic adjustment was 34 crankshaft deg. in the six, and 20 deg. in the V8.

Not to be outdone, BMW introduced VANOS (from the German variable Nockenwellenstuerung) at about the same time, and it’s perhaps more well-known than the systems of other carmakers. The original only adjusted the timing of the intake camshaft, but in 1996 double or dual VANOS was introduced, which worked on the intake and exhaust (again through the use of controlled oil pressure and a spiral gear).

No matter the manufacturer, these systems worked well, but are vulnerable to the effects of poor oil-change maintenance.

There are other potential problems, too, such as failed oil pressure switches and “jumped” timing. The symptoms might be poor performance, rough idle, rattling noises from wear, and the illumination of the dash warning, properly called the malfunction indicator lamp On some early systems, repair (MIL), but more commonly required replacement of the entire camshaft. These are some commonly referred to as the check engine needed original equipment parts, but you can probably save money by light. using aftermarket solutions.

releases the oil pressure, the return spring pushes the pistons back, disengaging the third rocker.

This is a far more comprehensive approach than just advancing/retarding the camshafts because the valve action shifts to that extra lobe entirely. It’s essentially the same as instantly installing high-performance camshafts. In other words, a racing grind is available whenever you might want it.

The Honda/Acura NSX was an impressive example of advanced automotive technology when it was introduced. Its VTEC system was ingenious.

NO NEED FOR A THROTTLE?

CHANGING LIFT IS EVEN MORE INGENIOUS Honda/Acura impressed us very much in 1989 when it introduced the NSX mid-engine sports car. It was the world’s first aluminum production vehicle. Every major component from the engine block and body to the chassis and suspension was made of that light metal.

But we’re interested in just the engine right now, a 3L DOHC 24 valve V6 that produced 270 – that’s 90 hp per liter, which was impressive specific output for the time. One factor that helped achieve this power density was the variable valve timing and lift electronic control system, called VTEC for short.

We’ll try to explain the cleverly-conceived design well enough to allow you to visualize how it works. Picture four valves per cylinder with each pair of intakes or exhausts operated by two rockers under the appropriate OHC. Sandwiched between the two rockers is a third, which rides on a separate high lift, extra duration cam lobe. A spring keeps it in contact with its lobe, but it normally just goes up and down by itself with no effect on the valves. All three rockers are bored crosswise, which makes a cylinder for two sliding hydraulic pistons and a return spring.

When, on the basis of input on rpm, load, mph, and coolant temperature, the computer decides it’s time for highperformance breathing, it opens a solenoid valve that allows oil pump pressure into the hollow rocker pivot shaft. Routed through a drilling in one rocker, that pressure moves the hydraulic pistons sideways so they act as pins to lock all three rockers together. Now, the profile of the third rocker’s cam lobe takes over valve operation, and the other two normal lobes just keep spinning without contacting anything. When the logic

In recent years, even more sophisticated control of valve events has appeared, notably in the form of Nissan’s variable valve event and lift (VVEL) and BMW’s Valvetronic. The basic idea is to vary the lift of the intake valves all the way down to the point where they’re only open a crack. As far as rpm is concerned, that does the same thing as a closed throttle does but without the wasteful pumping losses.

Both systems use an electric servo motor to control a mechanism that alters the lift of the intake valves; the exhausts operate in the traditional manner (take a minute to study the illustrations included here). Of course, the motor receives the appropriate commands from the engine management computer.

BMW claims the addition of Valvetronic to its engines provides a 10 percent reduction in gasoline consumption.

CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN! Since oil pressure is one of the control factors in variable valve timing and lift systems, the quality of the oil and the history of maintenance is paramount to the longevity of the components. The use of noncarmaker-approved engine oils and infrequent oil changes can lead to a host of problems you, the technician, will see sooner or later. That said, when faced with possible camshaft timing issues one of the most important things a technician can do in a preliminary evaluation is a visual inspection of some of the internal components of the engine. Granted, sometimes this will involve removing a valve cover, but it could save you a lot of frustration in the long run.

Inspection of the underside of the oil filler cap can sometimes give you an indication that additional inspection for sludge build-up is warranted. n

Nissan’s VVEL goes even further in lift control, reducing it so much at idle that a throttle becomes unnecessary.

ver since Nikolaus August Otto (18321891) invented the four-stroke cycle for internal-combustion engines in 1876, blending fuel with air in the most efficient proportions has been a challenge for automotive engineers.

Niklaus Otto Believe it or not, some early carburetors (the word means to combine air with hydrocarbons, from the French carbure) used wicks, as you might find in a kerosene lamp, to dissipate what was variously called then benzene, petrol, or gasoline into the stream of air that was flowing into an engine’s cylinders – controlling the air/fuel ratio was an exercise in experimentation. Spray-type carburetors came along shortly thereafter, which used the venturi principle to draw liquid fuel through a jet, the size of which determined the mixture. That was the height of 19th century automotive technology.

TEMPERATURE, ALTITUDE, RICHNESS Jet size (often adjustable by means of a needle), vacuum, and throttle position were the only factors affecting the blend, but during the past 141 years mixture accuracy was enhanced by giving other conditions some influence. For example, first there was the automatic choke, which closed off the carburetor’s throat according to the ambient temperature, thus providing the rich mix cold engines need to start and run smoothly until they warmed up. Then, thermostatic air cleaners appeared that combined ambient air with hot air gathered from over the exhaust manifold to keep the intake at a roughly uniform temperature even in frigid conditions.

It had long been realized that at high altitude, such as on a plateau of, say, 1.6 km (one mile), there are considerably fewer molecules of oxygen in each cubic unit of air than there are at sea level. This results in an overly rich mixture, reducing October 2017

fuel efficiency and increasing hydrocarbon (HC) emissions at the tailpipe. So, during the late 1970s, some carburetors incorporated a spring-loaded diaphragm that reacted to atmospheric pressure and varied the metered fuel flow through the circuits accordingly.

We should mention that, until automotive air pollution became a social issue, factory air/fuel ratios were biased toward the rich side, sometimes as high as 12:1 (by weight, not volume, which would be something like 2,000 to 1) to assure that a mixture that would fire dependably was always available. To put this into perspective, the ideal “stoichiometric” ratio is 14.7:1, typically represented by the Greek letter lambda. Theoretically, if you combine 14.7 kg (or, pounds) of air with 1 kg (lb.) of gasoline, blend it under optimal conditions, then set off a spark, the charge will burn completely, yielding the maximum amount of power with no emissions. Of course, no engine yet conceived can do that perfectly.

THE OXYGEN SENSOR AND CLOSED-LOOP When electronic fuel injection (EFI) was introduced in the late 1960s, the factors just mentioned were still the basis on which fuel delivery to the intake stream was based. It wasn’t until the advent of closed-loop or feedback injection systems incorporating an oxygen sensor appeared in 1976 that stoichiometry was approached closely enough to allow the three-way catalytic converter to oxidize HC and carbon monoxide (CO) and reduce NOx (oxides of nitrogen, an ingredient in the formation of smog). The signal from the O2 sensor gave the engine management computer the data it needed to continuously adjust the “on” time of the injectors, called the pulse width, hence the amount of gasoline delivered.

For any combination of inputs, the computer, otherwise known as the powertrain control module (PCM), electronic control module (ECM), electronic control unit (UCU), or digital motor electronics (DME, the Robert Bosch name) checks the “look up tables” in its PROM to find the best settings for pulse width, timing, dwell, etc. This data, sometimes called

a map, is laid down through careful research on dynamometers, test tracks, and actual roads. Optimum settings for power, efficiency, low emissions, and driveability are observed, then imprinted electronically.

Based on this and other programming along with input from sensors, the computer makes decisions, then issues commands that control fuel injectors, solenoids, coils, and other devices.

As far as fuel management is concerned, the values in the PCM’s look-up tables are nearly ideal. That is, providing the engine and injection system are like new. But in any mechanical entity, deterioration happens – injectors and filters clog, fuel pumps weaken, engine seams start to leak, deposits build up, etc.

COUNTING SWITCHES The introduction of closed-loop/feedback mixture control was indeed a profound advance, but improvement was still possible.

One of the ways this was accomplished was to have the computer tally the number of times the oxygen sensor signal switched from rich to lean, and vice versa. If the result showed that there were more rich signals than lean, the electronic logic reduced the base pulse width, thus making for faster, more accurate dynamic corrections. These adaptive strategies could be called “predictive” because they use past experience to get a head start on adjustments, employing the recent history of oxygen sensor activity to make minor closed-loop fuel delivery adjustments.

By the way, there is no fuel trim during warm-up, wide-open throttle, or deceleration because the computer isn’t using the oxygen sensor signal to make adjustments to the air/fuel ratio in those modes. Knowing this can help you in diagnosis.

This is what fuel trim is all about. Using a scan tool to read how much gasoline the computer is adding or subtracting from the basic setting can help you determine the likely cause of various performance and emissions problems.

We first learned about the concept when we were studying General Motors’ C3 (computer command control) systems in the early 1980s. What the company then called “integer” and “block learn” eventually got the OBD II names of short-term fuel trim (SFT) and long-term fuel trim (LFT), which are the

two steps of the process. LFT watches SFT and will only make a change if SFT has sensed and corrected the same condition for a calibrated period of time. Then, LFT will move one step in that direction.

Typically, SFT is shown in tenths of a millisecond, either plus or minus, and relates directly to the actual injector pulse width as it would be measured with a lab scope. LFT values are usually listed in percentage numbers, plus or minus. Positive numbers for both SFT and LFT at idle usually indicate an air leak.

LFT numbers that are positive (greater than 10 percent) with SFT numbers that are negative at idle are often a strong hint that the mass airflow sensor (MAS) has drifted out of calibration.

If you have a professional-grade scan tool, clear the adaptive values (this is typically accomplished when you clear OBD II codes), then test drive the vehicle. Without the added LFT fuel, the engine will run poorly if the MAF is bad. Performance will be sluggish and often the engine won’t be able to reach 4,000 rpm until the computer has time to readapt by restoring the additional pulse width.

Adaptive numbers that are negative indicate a rich condition.

This occurs much less often than the opposite problem. When you see negative numbers, look for anything that overloads the engine with fuel, including a failed fuel pressure regulator, a restricted line on a return-type system, or leaky injectors.

PAYING ATTENTION? Abnormal conditions that can affect the air/fuel ratio, hence fuel trim, include: • vacuum leaks or false air (air admitted downstream of the MAF); • restricted air flow, likely due to a dirty air filter); • restricted injectors;

• physical damage to the air intake system (duct, breather, MAF, throttle body, intake manifold); • false sensor data; • poor quality or contaminated fuel; • weak fuel pump or faulty pressure regulation; • exhaust leaks; • engine operation at the wrong temperature; • faulty positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system; • faulty evaporative emissions control (EVAP) system; and • engine mechanical fault (i.e. low compression).

Again, fuel trim on the positive side indicates the computer is adding fuel, and on the negative side that it’s subtracting fuel.

Some manuals suggest that the actual numbers are a percentage.

That is, a fuel trim figure of plus 5 indicates the computer has added 5 percent to the base pulse width. Whether or not this is true doesn’t matter. What we need to know is that long-term fuel trim numbers larger than plus or minus 10 indicate that there’s some kind of a problem with base pulse width calculations.

To mention General Motors again, a normal numerical reading for SFT or LFT as displayed on a scan tool will be about 128. If it’s higher, the PCM is adding extra fuel to the base calculation because the system is running lean. If the number is lower than 128, the module is subtracting fuel to make up for a rich condition.

The 128 value doesn’t necessarily represent stoichiometric, but rather the middle of the range of control. The system will always be trying to trim itself back to this and is more unhappy the further it gets from this number. Although theoretically you could see 0 or 255, actual range will usually be between 85 and 150.

In some other makes, zero represents the middle of the range, and a healthy system should always drift slightly above and below zero. If you should see “6” when you ask your scan tool to show you the parameter identification (PID) for SFT, it means the program is adding fuel to the tune of 6 percent. If the number has a minus sign in front of it, fuel is being subtracted.

INTERPRETATIONS

Cleaned or new injectors will restore proper fuel flow and pattern.

The following interpretations of readings other than those that represent the middle of the range might help you in the diagnosis of mysterious cases: • High at idle, normal at 3,000 suggest a vacuum leak.

• Normal at idle, high at 3,000 indicates a fuel flow problem, possibly a weak pump.

• High at both speeds indicates dirty injectors or low fuel pressure.

• Low at idle or 3,000 is evidence of a rich condition, perhaps because of gasoline in the crankcase, a leaky fuel pressure regulator diaphragm, or high fuel pressure.

A final note on a straightforward use of fuel trim in troubleshooting: SFT can help you locate a vacuum leak. Pinch off hoses, block seams, etc., while watching the number. A sudden drop means you’ve found the unintentional intake path. n October 2017

Autopromotec continues to grow The 27th edition of Autopromotec, the international garage equipment and automotive aftermarket trade show, that took place in Bologna, Italy, May 24-28, closed with encouraging results: 113,616 professional operators attended the event, 9,627 more compared to the previous edition, which translates to a 9 percent increase.

Of these, 90,061 were local Italian professionals, while 23,555 were overseas operators, which means an 8 percent increase of local operators and a 14 percent increase of international visitors.

Additionally, 93 conferences were held during the trade show, along with meetings involving about 2,900 industry professionals. Thanks to a long-standing partnership with ICE (Italian Agency for the Promotion and Internationalization of Italian firms) and Unioncamere Emilia Romagna, Autopromotec 2017 also saw the presence of 120 institutional buyers from more than 30 countries.

Digital activities were another example of the show’s success. The official website of the event recorded 182,609 single viewers and 1.9 million web page viewings. Messe Frankfurt is building on its growth consistently in the 2017 fiscal year. The company might see sales pass the ¤650 million mark. Mobility Park at AAPEX to feature live demonstrations A new Mobility Park at AAPEX 2017 will feature live demonstrations, giving attendees the opportunity to experience and learn firsthand more about automotive technology. AAPEX, which represents the $740 billion global automotive aftermarket industry, is held annually at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas.

Plans are underway for the Mobility Park to include scan tool engine demonstrations, underhood training, a 3-D print area and electric vehicles. Rematec achieves all-time high in visitor purchasing power The international remanufacturing industry gathered at RAI Amsterdam for the largest edition of the industry’s main event, ReMaTec 2017. The show is recognized as the international gathering for remanufacturing specialists, attracting visitors from 75 countries.

With a strong focus on sharing knowledge and facilitating valuable connections, the show launched the Meet the Expert sessions, where experts and industry professionals could share their views about challenges they face within the global remanufacturing industry in an informal setting. An inspiring educational program in the ReMaTec Theatre opened cross-sectoral discussions about remanufacturing from industries such as the maritime sector, aviation and information technology. The exhibition also included a comprehensive side-events program, ranging from events, such as the “Deep Dive: How to accelerate circular business through remanufacturing in a Port area?” to an automatic transmission technical seminar (Choice Tech 2017).

After the sharp rise of attendance in 2013, with 3,500 professionals attending the show, the number of visitors has stabilized, and a clear shift is heading toward a more international audience. The percentage of international visitors increased from 64 percent in 2013 to 70 percent in 2015 to more than 74 percent in 2017. There was a significant increase of visitors from Asia (North Korea, South Korea and Malaysia) and Europe (Russia, Greece and Hungary, Spain, Italy, Sweden and Albania).

Combined with a total of 260 exhibitors from 26 countries, the show has become a representation of the international character of the global remanufacturing industry.

Additionally, Salvador Munoz Zarate of Wabco Reman Solutions and Peter Bartel of Circular Economy Solutions, were awarded the ReMaTec Remanufacturer of the Year 2017. The jury recognized both for their work in representing the European automotive remanufacturing industry in lobbying and advising activities with the United Nations and the European Commission. APRA to co-locate International Big R Show with NACE Automechanika The Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association will be co-locating its International Big R Show with NACE Automechanika in 2018 and subsequent years. The first co-located event will occur Aug. 8-10, 2018 in Atlanta. The APRA Big R Show is a networking and education event in North America for the independent automotive remanufacturing industry. NACE Automechanika is the largest U.S. trade show dedicated to high-end technical and management-related training for automotive collision and service repair shops. The combination of these two events will create new networking and education opportunities for exhibitors and attendees alike. The co-located Big R Show and NACE Automechanika events will establish a fast-growing trade show for remanufacturing, collision and service repair in North America. Latin Auto Parts Expo featured range of products, presentations, and companies The fourth edition of the Latin Auto Parts Expo took place July 19-21, 2017, at the Atlapa Convention Center in Panama City, where 357 exhibitors from 18 countries exhibited a range of products, including accessories and custom parts, tools and equipment, auto repair and maintenance, and auto body and trim. About 3,000 visitors from 60 countries were present. Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia and Costa Rica were ranked the top countries of visitors.

The U.S. Department of Commerce granted Trade Fair Certification to the expo for the third consecutive year. Through the certification, the Commercial Service of the Department of Commerce recognizes the show organizer’s professional capability to organize a U.S. pavilion and endorses the event as an excellent opportunity to showcase U.S. products and services.

APEX 2017 attendees will get a look at tomorrow’s automotive aftermarket in the all-new Technology Intersection at this year’s event, which will take place Oct. 31 through Nov. 2. AAPEX, which is held annually at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas, represents the $740 billion global automotive aftermarket industry. Companies exhibiting in this area will have the opportunity to use virtual reality, simulators and other interactive interfaces to demonstrate future, innovative automotive technology currently not available in the aftermarket.

The Technology Intersection – which will be located in the Venetian Ballroom, Upper Level 2 – is one of many new programs at AAPEX 2017 to keep attendees informed. Additional programs include the new Mobility Park, enhanced AAPEXedu sessions, Let’s Tech presentations and a Service Professionals Summit.

For the first time, AAPEX will host the Technology and Telematics Forum V5.0 to spotlight cyber security, Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication, vehicle data and original equipment (OE) technology. The Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) – sponsored

From the Center for International Commerce to translators and an international happy hour, show amenities help international buyers connect with exhibitors and find new products at the 2017 SEMA Show, which takes place Oct. 31 to Nov. 3 in Las Vegas..

“The show is the best place for exhibitors to meet with international buyers and grow their export business,” says Linda Spencer, senior director of international and government affairs for SEMA. “Automotive customization is growing worldwide, and buyers look to the show to find new products and see what the hot trends are.”

International resources are: • Registration. Applications for show credentials are available in multiple languages – and include an easy option to request a visa letter if necessary – at semashow.com/register.

• Center for International Commerce. The center serves as home base for visitors from outside the U.S. during the show. Among the resources available in the center are translators, private meeting rooms, a lounge area and complimentary Wi-Fi. • Happy hour. The evening mixer is a chance for international buyers to connect with strategic exhibitors and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

• Roundtables. On Oct. 30, attendees will hear from, and learn about, growing vehicle markets in key countries.

The international activities are part of a year-round program that includes trips to preidentified countries, ongoing legislative advocacy and buyer relations activities.

Exhibitors are invited to expand their reach, product exposure and show-floor presence by offering products to builders through the Products for Project-Vehicle Builders list, which connects manufacturers with builders looking to create or complete a vehicle project. The list features product offers and contact information provided by exhibitors. Builders interested in obtaining a product use the information to contact exhibitors directly.

Furthermore, the show provides attendees and exhibitors with learning opportunities to support professional development and provide the help tools to grow small businesses. Last year, education attendance exceeded

10,000 learners. Partnering with the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS), Tire Industry Association (TIA) and Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR), the show will deliver a centralized and comprehensive program that addresses industry-specific training and small-business best practices, such as socialmedia marketing, human resources, finance and customer service. More than 100 sessions will be offered.

Builders with a car or truck on display at the show can enter the Battle of the Builders competition by applying online. The program recognizes and garners increased media exposure to vehicle builders, their vehicles and the products that make the vehicles unique. New for this year is the expanded “Young Guns” category, a program introduced in 2016 to provide heightened exposure for up-and-coming builders. As part of this program, SEMA partnered with AutoCon, Bonnier Corp. and Goodguys Rod & Custom Association to award builders age 27 and younger (as of Nov. 3, 2017) who don’t have a vehicle at the show an opportunity to participate in the program, now in its fourth year. Partnering organizations will award six winners at select regional events a prize package that includes an allexpenses-paid trip for two to this year’s show, transportation of the winner’s vehicle, a designated feature spot at the show and automatic entry into the competition. Winners from the partnering organizations then will compete in Battle of Builders, alongside the builders who entered with a feature or booth vehicle from the annual trade-only event. All competitors, their vehicles and sponsoring exhibitors receive increased exposure at the show and the possibility of being featured in a one-hour, nationwide television special that will air on the Velocity Network.

Entering its fifth year, the Launch Pad is a young entrepreneur automotive competition offering innovators, inventors and entrepreneurs younger than the age of 40 a platform to pitch their businesses to a panel of industry judges. The program has three prize packages designed to raise awareness and exposure to new automotive aftermarket products on the market. The program’s previous winners attribute much of their success to the Launch Pad; key industry relationships they were able to form; access to business tools, resources and marketing packages; and the overall exposure from participating in the program.

Technology upsurge in Asia’s auto industry enhances aftermarket presence at Automechanika Shanghai

A

sia’s automotive industry is undergoing rapid technological changes thanks to consumer demand for new energy vehicles, faster workshop speeds, increased customization options and improved in-car technologies.

Many of the region’s aftermarket enterprises are looking for a more technological edge, more environmentally friendly products and processes, and superior repair and management standards.

This opportunity is being brought to life at Automechanika Shanghai, where, this year, it will welcome about 6,000 exhibitors and 130,000 visitors. The show also is expected to house some of the latest advancements from the global and domestic automotive industries.

Astrace, a Chinese glass window film and paint developer that has various brands within the aftermarket sector, is exhibiting for the first time at Automechanika Shanghai 2017, with the goal of expanding into some of Asia’s most promising regions.

“We’re looking to broaden our horizons in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia,” says Kris Yang, manager of international business at Astrace. “These regions are all experiencing a growing presence in the sector, and with the help of Automechanika Shanghai, we’re hoping to capitalize on this growth.”

Similarly, fellow exhibiting business KYB, a shock absorber manufacturer, says China is constantly demanding a higher level of technical products and expertise.

“Thanks to the growing consumer need for smarter vehicles and electric cars, China is looking to continually grow in terms of design, research, development and component manufacturing,” says Lijun Fu, deputy general manager of marketing at KYB Trading (Shanghai).

“This is good news because it boosts and diversifies the demand for parts, components, repair and maintenance.

Thanks to this demand, we’re exploring more advanced technologies.”

The shift toward new energy and improved service in Asia’s auto industry also is part of a bigger market trend in environmental awareness. With new energy vehicles in China expected to represent at least one-fifth of car sales by 2025, an increasing number of industry sectors are looking to improve their carbon footprint, including many key players in the aftermarket business.

“In terms of automotive lubricants, things like pollution control and low carbon emissions are some of the key development trends in what is such a prosperous region,” says Yukiyoshi Takahashi, director and president at the JX Nippon Oil & Energy brand by Eneos.

Consequently, regulations of exhaust emissions are expected to become even stricter in the region, along with increased requirements on environmental protection.

Many exhibitors at the show already are adapting to this shift in focus for the industry.

Coating supplier Oerlikon Balzers is looking to showcase its sustainability credentials. Its coating technologies on display during Automechanika Shanghai can help improve energy consumption levels and the overall performance of vehicles, as well as reduce wear and friction for parts, according to the company.

Automechanika Shanghai will take place Nov. 29 – Dec. 2 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center covering 330,000 sqm. A new Reifen Zone will showcase the latest tires, wheels and rims, while upgrades to the E-mobility & Infrastructure zone will create a stronger focus on electronics, systems and future solutions.

HDAW builds on knowledge to drive industry success

he 12th annual Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week 2018 is a four-day (Jan. 22-25, 2018), multifaceted, executive business conference at The Mirage in Las Vegas that’s tailored for the independent heavy duty distributors and their suppliers. HDAW incorporates several beneficial elements for business development by combining: • expert presentations; • discussions; • educational sessions; • more than 1,600 prearranged, supplier/ distributor one-on-one meetings; • a world-class product expo; • more than 24 hours of open networking time during meals, breaks and receptions.

HDAW’16 was a record-breaking conference that included 2,517 attendees.

Conference organizers announced the theme for this year’s conference: “People, Partners, and Profits.” HDAW 2018 will offer industry participants education programs, a product expo with the latest in HD parts-services and information, peer networking and social activities.

“Take away any of the three components of people, partners and profits, and the industry crumbles,” says Troy Zurbuchen, president, Midwest Heavy Duty and Midwest Trailer Sales, and the distributor co-chair of HDAW’18. “We want to be able to communicate to attendees why each one is so critical to the independent aftermarket and how to best build on the knowledge to help drive success in industry.”

“We are very focused on all of the key elements of success in our industry and finding ways to continuously improve on them,” says Matt Forner, director, aftermarket sales, Grote Industries, and HDAW’18 supplier co-chair.

“This year, we’re dedicated to the essential parts that make the heavy duty aftermarket successful.”

This year’s show will present two new programs designed to foster more learning and networking for

attendees to create additional business opportunities – the hands-on training program and the HDAW reserved meal tables. The training program offers distributors who don’t participate in one-on-one meetings the opportunity to meet with participating suppliers in their booths.

They can take advantage of as many as six prescheduled, 20-minute private training sessions during the morning of Jan. 24.

Suppliers will conduct specialized sales and technical product training pertaining to the HD independent aftermarket distributor during the sessions on the product expo show floor. Suppliers participating in oneon-one meetings have the option to schedule four extra meetings in a more intimate setting instead of waiting in line for a table at a Mirage restaurant. A private area in the Mirage Grand Ballroom will be set aside with reserved tables during the scheduled breakfast and lunch times on Jan. 23 and 24. The reserved ballroom sections will be set with dividers surrounding tables of eight to 10 for privacy purposes. Each table will be identified with a company sign, and buffets will be set up for the private dining areas. Companies who participate will have the same table for breakfast and lunch on both days.

Each participating supplier has carefully selected products to offer only to distributors attending HDAW 2018, which provides an opportunity for distributors to introduce new products lines into their businesses, as well as save money. There will be more than 300 suppliers exhibiting at HDAW, making it the largest gathering of heavy duty aftermarket suppliers in the industry in one place at one time.

he International Big R Show, which bills itself as the ultimate networking and educational event for the remanufacturing industry, will be held from Oct. 28-30, 2017, at Bally’s in Las Vegas. The show is being run by the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association this year, which will allow APRA the freedom to make this a member-centric event. There will be more than 80 booths and 1,000 expected attendees, who will be able to keep current with industry trends and developments.
