From the editor's desk I have an obsession with words, often spending hours revising everything I compose. In fact, my love of language extends far beyond writing. Ask anyone who knows me, and you’ll undoubtedly identify a recurring theme: I almost never stop talking.

I use ‘almost’ because in the days following the recent presidential election, I was at a total loss for words. It was not because I didn’t care or because I was in a state of disbelief. Rather it was because, for one of the few times in my adult life, I had no clue how to clearly express what I wanted to say.

So, while I said nothing, I listened to America reveal everything. The news coverage reminded me of a concept I used to teach my students when we studied classical Greek tragedies. Throughout these plays, the hero desperately searches for some truth. It is a truth that the audience knows all along, and ironically, it is a truth that will inevitably destroy the hero when he discovers it. Once the hero learns the truth, he self-destructs.

The painful suspense ends, and the audience experiences an outpouring of emotion. In

short, the catharsis.

Just like in Greek theatre, a catharsis can occur in real life too. Beginning in the wee hours of November 9th, the world witnessed America’s catharsis. An intense outpouring of fear, elation, relief, and anger flowed into every nook and cranny of our communities— pouring through our streets, spilling into the hallways of our schools, and seeping into the living rooms of our very own homes.

I said nothing because I was afraid to make things worse. Emotions were running high; I just wanted to help, and I had no idea how. So, I simply continued to listen. And thankfully, I found exactly what I needed to hear.

I listened to family, to friends, to neighbors, and to strangers. I listened to a conversation at the gym, a man in an elevator,

and my Uber driver. It didn’t take long before I came to one, rather obvious, conclusion.

Yes, our journeys through life are extremely different—our beliefs, our experiences, and our perspectives. But despite these differences, we all share the same goal: we want to live in a community that brings about opportunity, health, security, and love.

I believe we have become so caught up in talking—in acknowledging the differences but doing nothing to understand them—that we have lost focus on the goal we all share.

I encourage you to read the words of this issue’s featured interview with Tony Marrero.

Listen to his message. I spoke with him three weeks before the election. His message lifted me up. Now more than ever, it gives me hope for how I can work to make my community— my space in this world—a more beautiful place to live.

People build communities; governments oversee them. If we wish to impact our community, it is up to us—up to you—to do that work. To begin, we need to understand our differences, not simply acknowledge them.

Of course, we can only truly understand one another when we take the time to listen.

You see, the wonderful difference between the tragedies of the Greek theatre and real life is that, to the actors on the stage, the catharsis is meaningless. But here in our communities, our reaction means everything. It holds the power that shapes the community itself.

Desde la mesa del editor Tengo una obsesión por las palabras. Me paso horas revisando todo lo que escribo.

De hecho, mi amor por el lenguaje se extiende más allá de la escritura. Pregúntele a cualquiera que me conozca, y sin duda identificará un tema recurrente en mi personalidad: yo casi nunca paro de hablar.

Uso el “casi nunca” porque en los días siguientes a la reciente elección presidencial, sufrí una pérdida total de palabras. No fue porque no me importara o porque estuviera en un estado de negación, sino porque, por primera ver en mi vida adulta, no tenía idea de cómo expresar claramente lo que deseaba decir.

Así que mientras no decía nada, escuchaba a América revelar todo. La cobertura por parte de las noticias me hizo recordar un concepto que usaba para enseñar a mis alumnos cuando estudiábamos las tragedias griegas clásicas. A través de estas obras, el héroe busca desesperadamente la verdad.

No dije nada porque temía empeorar la situación. Las emociones se desencadenaban rápidamente; sólo deseaba ayudar, y no tenía idea de cómo lograrlo. Así que simplemente continúe escuchando. Y afortunadamente encontré lo que deseaba escuchar.

Escuché a mi familia, a mis amigos, a mis vecinos y a extraños. Escuché una

conversación en el gimnasio, a un hombre en el elevador y a mi conductor de Uber. No me tomó mucho tiempo llegar a una, sin embargo obvia, conclusión. Sí, nuestros viajes a través de la vida son extremadamente diferentes -nuestras creencias, nuestras experiencias y nuestras perspectivas-. Sin embargo, a pesar de tener estas diferencias, todos compartimos la misma meta: deseamos vivir en una comunidad con oportunidades, con salud, seguridad y amor.

Creo que nos hemos enredado tanto en el hablar -en reconocer nuestras diferencias pero sin hacer nada para entenderlas-, que hemos perdido el enfoque de lo que realmente nos une. Si deseamos trabajar juntos hacia las mismas metas, tenemos que comenzar por escucharnos los unos a los otros.

Casi todos los artículos en esta edición de Latino Connection Magazine ofrecen soluciones para “seguir delante”, para procurar una mejor vida para nosotros mismos. Juntos son un ejemplo de como, en cada comunidad, cada uno de nosotros podemos crear los espacios en los que deseamos vivir.

Las personas construimos comunidades; los gobiernos las supervisan. Si deseamos impactar de manera positiva a nuestra comunidad, está en nosotros –está en tíhacer ese trabajo. Para empezar, necesitamos entender nuestras diferencias, no simplemente reconocerlas. Por supuesto, sólo podremos entendernos unos a los otros cuando nos tomemos el tiempo para escucharnos.

Si te das cuenta, la hermosa diferencia entre la tragedias del teatro griego y la vida real es que, para los actores en el escenario, la catarsis es insignificante. Pero aquí en nuestras comunidades, nuestra reacción a nuestro entorno significa todo. Contiene el poder que le da forma a nuestra comunidad.

En La Communidad On Saturday, November 12th, the 2nd annual Latino Ball was held at Midtown Harrisburg’s Musical Arts Center. Numerous organizations were recognized for their commitment to the programs and services that support the Spanishspeaking residents across Pennsylvania. Over 300 guests attended the Cubanthemed celebration, walked the red carpet, and danced late into the night to the live music of Los Monstros.

One of the most memorable moments was the heartfelt and emotional speech delivered by President of Latino Connection and publisher of Latino Connection Magazine, George Fernandez.

There is nothing sweet about gaining weight any time of the year, and winter tends to be the season where many people lose sight of their health and wellness goals. The shorter days, colder weather, and frequent holiday gatherings can be a time when our worst health habits get the best of us. By having several, simple strategies in place, we can help our bodies outsmart winter weight gain so we can enjoy a happier and healthier spring.

Establish a bedtime routine where you turn off all electronic devices and do a few minutes of deep breathing or meditation to calm and relax your A simple fact is that most people are less active during the winter. Harrisburg’s Got Talent—When We Take the Time to Look

Will they become entrepreneurs, CEOs, community leaders, or attorneys? Sadly, for most of them, the likely answer to this question was the same as the first.

Since August, Method3 has become extremely involved with the Harrisburg School District, HACC’s workforce development efforts, The Latino Connection, and other organizations to begin the long process of helping people who need a second chance to get back to work. Method3 now works with students, beginning early in their formative freshman and sophomore years, to develop a career plan. And as an employer with a reach into many local companies, Method3 pledges to work to change our clients’ approach to staffing and hiring.

Companies have struggled for decades to hire and retain talent, and they have done the same things, over and over. Method3 is committed to educating organizations on the wealth of untapped talent in Harrisburg.

And to utilize it, they must rethink their hiring strategy.

This past August, my company—Method3—was invited to participate in a job fair at the Boy’s Club in Harrisburg. As the owner, I do very little recruiting and typically do not attend job fairs; however, I was compelled to attend this one. I grew up on Allison Hill and spent a lot of time at the Boy’s Club in my youth.

Upon arriving and seeing the traffic on Berryhill Street, I decided to veer off and park by my old house on Hummel. The ensuing, one block walk down Hummel Street was the first of many eye-opening experiences that the entire day would bring. I quickly noticed that this was not the same neighborhood I remembered. There was trash everywhere, as well as a startling number of abandoned homes. It was very disheartening for me to see what had become of my once proud, bluecollar neighborhood.

Eye-opener number two occurred shortly after entering. This event was intended to provide convicted felons with information and counsel on the process of expunging their criminal records. Over 350 individuals were in attendance, gathered together in the large gymnasium. I initially found many of the attendees to be particularly intimidating, and I am sure that the young, white, suburban recruiters working our booth were somewhat unnerved as well. However, as the participants began filtering in and interacting with us, our thoughts quickly changed. Through their words and actions, we felt their drive to make a better life for themselves, their willingness to work, and their desire to become productive members of society. These individuals were

polite and well mannered; they were taking responsibility for what they had done, and they were anxious to make amends and start over. Over the course of several hours at the Boy’s Club, my mood had completely shifted from disheartened, to intimidated, to ultimately, uplifted.

The third eye-opener I experienced occurred as I walked out of the Boy’s Club, and it was the event that inspired me to get involved to make a positive change in Harrisburg. As I headed to my car, I passed a group of 6 or 7 boys, all approximately 10-15 years old. One or two were on bikes, and another was dribbling a basketball. The boys seemed to be killing time, enjoying the lazy summer afternoon, just like my friends and I used to do on those same streets, some forty years ago.

Today, many of those same neighborhood friends have gone on to build very successful careers in business and public service. As I watched these young boys on the same streets from my youth, now marked by litter and abandoned homes, I asked myself, were my friends smarter than this group of boys?

No, of course not. My next question—the heartbreaking question—concerned their future. Where will these boys be in 40 years?

Como dueño, yo hago muy poco reclutamiento, y generalmente no visito ferias de empleos. No obstante, en esta ocasión estuve interesado en asistir. Yo crecí en Allison Hill, y pasé mucho tiempo en el Boy’s Club durante mi juventud.

Al llegar y ver el tráfico en la calle Berryhill, decidí tomar un desvió y estacionarme cerca de mi antigua casa en la calle de Hummel.

Una caminata por esta calle fue la primera de muchas experiencias que me abrieron los ojos en aquel día. Rápidamente noté que éste no era el mismo vecindario que recordaba. Había basura por doquier, así como un gran número de casas abandonadas. Más de 350 personas atendieron este evento y se congregaron en un gran gimnasio. Al principio encontré que muchos de los presentes se mostraban particularmente intimidantes, y estoy seguro que los reclutadores blancos, jóvenes y regulares que trabajaban en nuestra estación se sentían algo nerviosos también. El tercer sacudimiento que experimenté ocurrió mientras salía del Boy’s Club, y fue el evento que me inspiró a involucrarme para realizar un cambio positivo en Harrisburg.

Mientras me dirigía a mi vehículo, vi pasar a un grupo de 6 a 7 niños, aproximadamente de entre 10 y 15 años de edad. Uno o dos tenían bicicletas, otro estaba jugando con el balón de baloncesto. And From Darkness Rose a Brilliant Light: An Interview with Tony Marrero Nearly six months after the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, survivor Tony Marrero is still experiencing intense physical pain. He is unable to return to his job at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where he loved to make people smile. Yet, Tony is hard at work in a different way, lifting people up with a very powerful message.

LC: On the night of June 12th, you went to Latin night at Pulse Nightclub. What can you tell us about that night?

Marrero: I was headed home after work, and I received a text message from my best friend, Luis. He wanted to go to Pulse because somebody was having a birthday party there.

He wasn’t gay; he had never been to that club before. He just wanted me to go with him. So, he came to pick me up.

On The Ellen Degeneres Show, he thanked Katy Perry for her music—moving everyone to tears. He delivered a heartfelt presentation at the Hispanic Heritage Awards in Washington, DC—inspiring the audience with his message of hope. We didn't get to Pulse until midnight. The vibe of the club was amazing; everybody was having a good time. We weren't drinking; we were just dancing and talking. It was close to 2:00 a.m., and the bartender made last call.

We started walking towards the door, and that's when we started hearing the gunshots.

We followed our instincts and hit the ground.

When we hit the ground, we landed in different directions. That’s the last time I saw him.

LC: I'm so, so sorry. Why don’t you just tell me what you are comfortable telling me about what happened next.

Marrero: I was lying [on the floor] next to the couches in the VIP section. Everybody was screaming. It was chaos; people were trapped on the ground. I don’t know how, but I focused on finding a way to survive—to protect my head. I lifted up the couch, and I put my head underneath it. I had to lay there, pretending to be dead. And the hate—you

“Imagine if everyone was happy—if they loved themselves—the world would be very different.” could feel the hate in there. It was terrible. To go through something like that, it was very traumatizing for everyone.

LC: At what point were you shot?

Marrero: I was laying there pretending to be dead, and all I could hear was nonstop shooting. He walked around, just shooting.

When he got close to me, I think he needed to make sure that I was dead. He shot me four times in the back and [at close range, severely damaging] my arm.

LC: Do you remember how you got out?

How you got to the hospital?

Marrero: I just laid there and tried to stay calm. There was more shooting for a while.

Then, the police arrived. They yelled ‘if anyone is alive, raise your hand.’ I stuck my head out from under the couch and made eye contact with a police officer. He told me to find the strength to crawl to him. And somehow, I did.

LC: I can’t imagine the physical and mental strength that must have taken.

Marrero: I don’t know how I did it. I think maybe I have a guardian angel. That is the part I still have nightmares about, crawling to the police officer. It was terrifying. [The police] dragged me to the other side of the street, and the First Response team took me to the hospital. I felt very thirsty, apparently because I was losing a lot of blood. I started to lose [my] vision. I was going. Then, they gave me two adrenaline shots that brought me back.

LC: Do you remember being at the hospital?

Marrero: I remember all these doctors around me and a lot of yelling. They were trying to save as many lives as possible. I was telling the doctor ‘I can't breathe.’ I grabbed her, and I passed out. That's the last thing I remember.

LC: Can you share what you remember after waking up in the hospital? What was your physical condition?

Marrero: My boyfriend Justin told me I was out for hours. I woke up with tubes everywhere—down my throat to my stomach, and on each side of my body, under my armpits. They were debating if they were going to take my arm because it looked very bad. They did some skin grafting. My surgeon, Dr. Ibrahim, recently told me that when he saw my arm that night, he thought he wasn’t

going to be able to save it.

LC: How were you doing emotionally?

LC: With everything that is still going on physically, I really appreciate you taking the time to speak with me. How do you find the courage to share your story?

Marrero: At first, it was like a nightmare. I just had to lay there and not talk. I was scared to sleep because I was afraid I wasn’t going to wake up. The doctor who came to see me said that out of the eight people he tried saving that night, I was the only one who survived.

And technically, I died too. But, he brought me back. I was touched, but scared. Happy, but sad.

I feel so sad because I lost my best friend. But, I deal with it. I don't close myself off or shut down. A couple of days ago was his birthday. I was a wreck. But I got up, and I kept going.

LC: You seem very grateful for everyone who helped you.

Marrero: Everybody that came together that night to try to save as many lives as possible did an amazing, amazing thing, and I am so grateful. [Dr. Ibrahim] has been so amazing through all of this, too. I've never seen a community come together like it did for this tragedy. That's the kind of attitude and positivity that people need in their life, and that's what I'm trying to do now.

LC: It’s been almost six months since the attack. How are you healing?

Marrero: I still have one open wound where I was shot in the back. My muscles started growing [before the wound healed], causing me a lot of pain. They did surgery a couple of weeks ago and removed the excess muscle.

Now, it is starting to heal normally.

My arm had wounds deep enough to see the bone. Finally, it healed a couple of weeks ago, but the nervous system is still trying to reconnect. I'm getting pain in my fingers because they are still numb. Everything is

Marrero: As much as I don't like to say it, some go through something called survivor's guilt. Why are we here, and why are our friends are not here? It is very bad. But something happened to me when I was in recovery at the hospital. It’s like [my] brain switched in a way that everything negative, automatically [turns] to a positive. It doesn't matter how bad it is. That’s what keeps me going; that's why I'm here right now [doing this interview] with you.

After Pulse, no one wanted to say anything.

The survivors—we were scared—and nobody wanted to talk. But I started talking because I figure there's a lot of people out there who have to be feeling super scared, just like me.

They don't know how to cope. If I start talking, and I can help people try to get through this together, then that is a good thing.

LC: You have such courage and strength to tell your story. You mention you want to ‘Be the light’ for people. How do you find the strength to do that?

Marrero: During recovery, I started getting so much love on social media—all types of messages. People were thanking me for having the courage to speak up. It hit me. If I'm doing all this for people, that's got to be the reason why God still has me here.

LC: So, has the response on social media all been positive?

Marrero: I have been getting some horrible messages too, saying Pulse was a hoax; Pulse never happened. Here I am, looking in the

mirror with all these scars on my body while I'm still trying to deal with the loss of my best friend. But, I don't focus on those comments.

I focus on the positive comments because it's very easy to hate somebody or to project hate using a computer.

Many people don't understand the power that the simplest message can have. A beautiful message is powerful, but if you write a hateful comment, it [can also be] really powerful. But there's more good than bad people out there.

Because we are connected, nothing is going to stop the good from rising up. I'm going to live for my best friend that didn't make it. I'm going to live the other 49 victims that didn't make it that night.

was happy—if they loved themselves—the world would be very different. There's always going to be problems, but every problem has a solution. The way we respond to the problem affects the solution we find. Be yourself, be happy, and reach out to others. That's the most beautiful thing you can do.

LC: While some have seen this as an attack on the gay community, you see it in a broader sense, correct?

LC: What would you tell others who are dealing with negativity, bullying, or hateful acts?

Marrero: This is not just about the gay community. This is about the whole community. My friend wasn't gay, but my friend has such a beautiful soul. He was so open-minded; he loved everybody. Now, I carry that with me because we're both the same way. Not just the gay community, but the whole community needs to come together and stay together.

Marrero: You're not going to be 100% happy unless you be yourself. Don't change to please anyone. It’s just a waste of time because you are not loving yourself. If you can't love you, you can't love any other human being.

Dividing people is the worst thing you can do.

We need to work together; to stay together; to come together, to reach our goals together.

Everybody has personal goals, but I'm pretty sure we can help each other out.

The happier you are, the more happiness you are going to project, and the more happiness you will find around you. Imagine if everyone

LC: Keep sharing that message, Tony, it will inspire people to act and you will heal a lot of hearts.

Marrero: So many people aren't living. They are just going through life. They don't realize how short life can be, and how beautiful life really is. I technically died, and I came back.

Now, I'm living my life to the fullest, helping people, living every moment. Tell and anybody and everybody that you love, that you love them because you don't know when it will be the last time you are going to see them. Life is short, trust me, life is very short. It is a gift. We should not be taking it for granted.

People underestimate the power of love— it can heal anything. Project that love. I do it with all my heart because I know I am helping people. And what better job is there than that. 

No estábamos bebiendo; estábamos bailando y hablando. Era cerca de las 2:00 am, y el “bartender” dio la última llamada.

Estábamos caminando hacia la puerta cuando escuchamos disparos. Seguimos nuestros instintos y nos lanzamos al suelo. Cuando nos lanzamos al suelo, caímos en distintas direcciones. Esa fue la última vez que lo vi…

LC: Lo siento mucho. ¿Por qué no sólo me cuentas lo que te sientas cómodo expresar en cuanto a lo que ocurrió después?

Marrero: Yo estaba tirado [en el suelo] cerca de los muebles en la sección VIP. Todas las personas estaban gritando. Era un caos; habían personas atrapadas en el suelo. No sé cómo, pero me enfoqué en pensar en la manera de sobrevivir, proteger mi cabeza. Levanté un sillón y puse mi cabeza bajo el mismo.

Me quede allí, pretendiendo estar muerto.

Y el odio, tu podías sentir el odio allí. Era horrible. Tener que pasar por esto fue muy traumatizante para todos los presentes.

LC: ¿En qué momento recibiste el disparo?

Marrero: Yo estaba allí, pretendiendo estar muerto. Todo lo que podía escuchar era un incesante tiroteo. Alguien iba caminando, disparando. Cuando estuvo cerca de mí -creo que tenía que estar seguro que estaba muerto-, me disparó cuatro veces en la espalda, y -a corto rango, hiriéndome severamente- en el brazo.

LC: ¿Recuerdas cuando te sacaron de allí? ¿Cuándo llegaste al hospital?

Marrero: Sólo estaba tirado allí, tratando de guardar la calma. Hubo otro tiroteo por un momento. Entonces llegó la policía. Uno de sus miembros gritó: “si hay alguien vivo, levante sus manos”. Saqué mi cabeza de debajo del mueble e hice contacto directo con el oficial de policía. Me indicó que encontrara la fuerza para arrastrarme hacia él. Y de alguna manera lo hice…

LC: No me puedo imaginar la fuerza física y mental que tuviste…

Marrero: No sé cómo lo hice. Creo que talvez tengo un ángel guardián. Esa es la parte de la historia que aún me provoca pesadillas; yo, arrastrándome hacia el oficial de policía. Fue aterrador. [La Policía] me arrastró hacia el otro lado de la calle, y el equipo de respuesta inmediatamente me llevó al hospital. Me sentía sediento, aparentemente por la pérdida de sangre. Empecé a perder la visión. Me estaba yendo. Entonces me dieron doble dosis de adrenalina y me trajeron de vuelta.

LC: ¿Recuerdas haber estado en el hospital?

Marrero: Recuerdo que los doctores estaban por todos lados, y escuchaba muchos gritos.

Estaban tratando de salvar cuántas vidas fuera posible. Estaba diciéndole al doctor “no puedo respirar”. En esos momentos la agarré, y me desmayé. Eso es lo último que recuerdo.

Marrero: Todas las personas que se unieron esa noche para tratar de salvar la mayor cantidad de vidas posible hicieron algo verdaderamente extraordinario, y les estoy muy agradecido. [Dr. Ibrahim] también ha sido maravilloso en todo esto. Nunca había visto una comunidad unirse tanto como lo hizo luego de esta tragedia. Ese es el tipo de actitud positiva que la gente necesita en sus vidas, y eso es lo que trato de transmitir ahora.

LC: ¿Nos puedes compartir tus recuerdos cuando despertaste en el hospital? ¿Cuál era tu condición física?

Marrero: Mi novio Justin me dijo que llevaba inconsciente algunas horas. Me levanté con tubos por doquier -bajo mi garganta hasta mi estómago, y en cada parte de mi cuerpo, debajo de mis axilas-. Ellos estaban debatiendo la posibilidad de amputarme el brazo, ya que se veía muy mal. Me hicieron un injerto de piel.

Mi cirujano, el Dr. Ibrahim, recientemente me dijo que cuando vio mi brazo esa noche, pensaba que no podría salvarlo.

LC: ¿Cómo te encontrabas emocionalmente?

Marrero: Al principio era una pesadilla. Sólo podía estar acostado allí, sin hablar. Tenía miedo de dormir porque tenía temor de no levantarme. El doctor que vino a verme me dijo que de las ocho personas que trató de salvar esa noche, yo fui la única que sobrevivió.

Y técnicamente, yo morí también, pero él me trajo a la vida de nuevo. Eso me conmovió, pero estaba asustado. Me sentía feliz, pero triste a la vez…

Me siento tan triste porque perdí a mi mejor amigo, pero tengo que lidiar con ello. Yo no me cierro o me apago por ello. Hace unos días fue mi cumpleaños. Estaba hecho un desastre.

Pero me levanté y seguí adelante.

LC: Pareces muy agradecido por todas las

LC: Han transcurrido seis meses desde el ataque. ¿Cómo te has ido recuperando?

Marrero: Aún tengo una herida abierta en la espalda. Mis músculos comenzaron a crecer antes que la herida sanara, lo cual me causó mucho dolor. Me hicieron una cirugía hace unas semanas, y me removieron el exceso de músculo. Ahora está comenzando a sanar con normalidad.

Mi brazo tenía heridas lo suficientemente profundas para ver el hueso. Finalmente, se sanó algunas semanas atrás, pero el sistema nervioso aún trata de reconectarse. Me duelen los dedos porque aún están adormecidos. Todo se está reconstruyendo.

LC: A pesar de tu recuperación física en proceso, te agradezco que te hayas tomado el tiempo para hablar conmigo. ¿De dónde sacas el coraje para compartir tu historia?

Marrero: No me agrada tanto decirlo, pero algunos pasamos por algo llamado “culpa del sobreviviente”. ¿Por qué estamos aquí y nuestro amigo no? Es algo muy malo. Pero algo me pasó a mí durante mi recuperación en el hospital. Es como si mi cerebro hubiera cambiado, como si todo lo que fuera negativo,

"Necesitamos trabajar juntos; mantenernos unidos; reunirnos, llegar a metas juntos.

No importa que tan malo haya sido. Eso es lo que me mantiene en pie. Esa es la razón por la que estoy aquí ahora [haciendo esta entrevista] contigo.

Después de Pulse, nadie quería decir nada.

De los sobrevivientes –estábamos todos asustados- nadie deseaba hablar. Pero yo empecé a hablar porque me di cuenta que habían muchas personas afuera que habían experimentado un miedo intenso, así como yo. Ellos no sabían cómo hacerle frente a esta situación. Si empezaba a hablar, y podía ayudar a personas a sobrepasar esto juntos, eso sería una buena acción.

LC: Tienes tanto valor y fuerza para contar tu historia. Mencionaste que querías “ser la luz” para las personas. ¿En dónde encuentras la fuerza para ello?

Marrero: Durante mi recuperación, empecé a recibir tanto amor en las redes sociales -todo tipo de mensajes-. Las personas me agradecían por darles el valor para hablar. Me conmovió.

Si estoy haciendo todo esto por la gente, esa tiene que ser la razón por la que Dios me tiene aquí.

LC: ¿Así que la respuesta en las redes sociales ha sido positiva?

Marrero: He recibido algunos mensajes horribles también, diciendo que Pulse fue una farsa, que Pulse nunca ocurrió. Aquí estoy mirándome al espejo con todas estas cicatrices en mi cuerpo mientras trato de lidiar con la pérdida de mi mejor amigo. Pero no deseo enfocarme en esos comentarios. Me quiero

concentrar en los comentarios positivos, porque es muy fácil odiar a alguien o proyectar ese odio a través de una computadora.

Muchas personas no entienden el poder que un simple mensaje puede llevar. Un mensaje hermoso y poderoso, pero si escribes un mensaje de odio, también puede ser realmente poderoso. Pero aún creo que hay más gente buena que mala en el mundo; porque estamos conectados, nada puede impedir que lo bueno crezca. Yo viviré por mi mejor amigo que no pudo lograrlo. Yo voy a vivir por esas otras 49 víctimas que no pudieron sobrevivir esa noche.

Marrero: Esto no es solamente sobre la comunidad gay. Esto afecta a toda la comunidad. Mi amigo no era gay, pero mi amigo tenía un alma hermosa. Él tenía la mente abierta; él amaba a todos por igual.

Ahora yo cargo con ello, porque ambos somos de la misma manera. No sólo la comunidad gay, pero toda la comunidad necesita unirse y mantenerse unida.

Dividir a las personas es lo peor que se puede hacer. Necesitamos trabajar juntos; mantenernos unidos; reunirnos, llegar a metas juntos. Todos tenemos metas personales, pero sé que es posible ayudarnos unos a los otros.

LC: ¿Qué les dirías a esas personas que están lidiando con la negatividad, el “bullying”, o actos de odio?

LC: Sigue transmitiendo este mensaje Tony, inspirará a las personas a actuar, y sanarás muchos corazones.

These criminals lie, trying to trick you into parting with your private information. While there is no guarantee that you won’t fall victim to their schemes, here are some simple things you can do to reduce the risk:

The IRS Will Never Call Your House.

Never give out financial account information or pin numbers to anyone who contacts you pretending to be from a bank or company with whom you do business. Scammers are sneaky.

They use a variety of dirty tactics to get you to part with your personal information. They will often make up a story, telling you that your account has already been compromised. They will tell you they need you to verify your account information in order to protect it. Stop right there.

Hang up. Then, call your bank or credit card company and report the fake call.

A thief can use your social security number to steal your money and your identity. Social security numbers are used to access many financial and medical records. Only give out your social security number to someone you know and trust.

Federal law prohibits any contest organizer to require someone to pay to enter or claim a prize. It’s written in the small print on the form or website of any contest you enter. Also, you will never have to pay shipping and handling, postage, or fees to have prizes sent to you. Cash prizes will never be wired to your bank account. The only fees you might owe are taxes, but those are paid to the government when you report the winnings on your tax forms at the end of the year. They should never be collected by the contest promoter.

Another popular scam is to call you and tell you that you won a contest you didn’t know you entered. Remember, you can’t win a game you didn’t play.

Even the Internal Revenue Service will tell you they will not contact you by phone. According to a statement they released this past September, many victims of these type of phone scams are told they owe money in back taxes. Scammers then tell them they must pay using a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. When victims refuse, the scammer will often threaten an arrest, deportation, or suspension of a driver’s license—often using a hostile or threatening tone.

New citizens are especially vulnerable to this type of scam. The IRS will never use deportation as a threat. It’s complete hogwash. Hang up on them. You can report the incident to the police or to Treasury Inspector General at 1-800-366-4484.
