Desde el Escritorio del Editor/ From The Publisher's Desk Este número de Latino Connection Magazine es muy especial para nosotros, porque en él compartimos un poco de lo mucho que Latino Connection ha venido trabajando en la comunidad. Nuestro interés, más allá de organizar eventos, es primordialmente llevar los recursos que promuevan la salud y la educación en nuestra comunidad.

Nuestro compromiso siempre ha sido, es y seguirá siendo, servir a nuestra comunidad latina; exaltar sus logros y apoyar a todas aquellas organizaciones que se han venido comprometiendo en su desarrollo.

Este nuevo año que inicia se presenta para nosotros colmado de nuevas expectativas, ya que nuestra empresa ha experimentado un crecimiento considerable. Y esto significa que si hasta el momento habíamos sido capaces de brindar ayuda y apoyo a nuestra comunidad, ¡ahora vamos a poder hacerlo a mayor escala!

Me emociona ver todas las oportunidades y el impacto que esto representa para nuestras comunidades. Sin embargo, el haber llegado hasta aquí no ha sido un camino siempre fácil, sino pleno de retos. Como bien sabemos, todo crecimiento involucra un cambio. Generalmente, los cambios no son fáciles al inicio, porque por comodidad preferimos permanecer en nuestra zona de confort; en lo que ya conocemos y en donde tenemos el control. Sin embargo, los cambios son importantes y necesarios en todos los aspectos de nuestras vidas. Cambiar no significa que estemos haciendo algo mal, sino que estamos inmersos en un proceso de crecimiento. El cambio es un crecimiento que nos puede llevar a hacer más y mejores cosas en la vida. Los cambios sirven para sacudirnos y llevarnos a nuevos niveles. Quien no cambia, quien no se adapta, no sobrevive, no crece.

Hoy, en este nuevo ciclo que iniciamos, te invitamos a que te renueves con nosotros. Te invitamos a seguir creciendo, sin miedos, a cambiar para mejorar. Toma los retos que trae este nuevo año con la mejor actitud y con la mejor disposición para alcanzar lo que te has venido proponiendo desde hace tiempo, o con lo que soñaste hace años.

This issue of Latino Connection Magazine is very special for us, because in it we share a little of how much Latino Connection has worked for the community. Our interest, beyond organizing events, is primarily to bring resources that promote health and education to our community. Our commitment has always been, and will continue to be, serving our Latino community; exalt its achievements and support all those organizations that have been committed to support its development.

This new year brings new expectations for us, since our company has experienced a considerable growth. This means that if we had been able to offer help and support our community in the past, then we can now do it on a larger scale!

I am excited to see all the opportunities and impacts that will represent our communities. However, to have arrived here has not been an easy path, but full of challenges. As we all know, all growth involves a change. Generally, changes are not easy at the beginning, because we like to stay in our comfort zone, in what we already know and where we have control. However, changes are important and necessary in all aspects of life. Change does not mean that we are doing something wrong, but that we are immersed in a process of growth. Change is a growth that can lead us to do more and better things in life. Changes serve to shake us up and take us to new levels. People who do not change and adapt, do not survive, grow, and advance.

Today, in this new cycle that we just started, we invite you to renew yourself with us. We invite you to continue growing, without fears, to change, and to improve. Take the challenges that this new year brings with the best attitude and with the best disposition to achieve what you have been wishing for a long time, or with what you dreamed years ago. PODER Exposición De Salud Y Bienestar Móvil Durante este verano, Latino Connection realizó su primera Gira de la Salud y el Bienestar a diferentes condados del estado de Pensilvania. “PODER Health and Wellness Expo ROADSHOW”, como fue denominada, tiene el propósito de llevar recursos a la comunidad relativos a la salud y el bienestar.

Se trata de empoderar con conocimientos y motivación a la población, con el fin de que tenga una participación más activa en el cuidado de su salud. Como resultado, cerca de 3 mil personas se vieron beneficiadas con las presentaciones en vivo del chef Dave; actividades de acondicionamiento como POUND, con Crunch Firnes, y con las divertidas historias de Jorge el Curioso, ¡entre muchas otras actividades!

PODER Health & Wellness Expo Roadshow This summer, Latino Connection launched its first Health and Wellness TOUR making stops in different counties across Pennsylvania. PODER Health and Wellness Expo ROADSHOW provided the community with health and wellness resources that “empowered” them with knowledge and motivation to take an active role in their health. Close to 3,000 people took part in the live cooking demonstrations with Chef Dave; live fitness activities like POUND with Crunch Fitness; story time with Curious George and more!

Comunidades Contra la Epidemia de los Opioides El 30 de octubre de 2018 se llevó a cabo el simposio denominado Comunidades Contra la Epidemia de los Opioides (“Communities Against the Opioid Epidemic”). El evento tuvo lugar en el State Museum of Pennsylvania, en Harrisburg, capital del estado, y fue realizado con la colaboración de la Comisión Asesora para Asuntos Latinos del Gobernador. El simposio abordó el tema de la epidemia de los opioides entre las minorías étnicas y rurales, un fenómeno que por su alarmante crecimiento es considerado un problema de salud pública.

El simposio reunió a 100 ejecutivos clave, profesionistas y oficiales, quienes discutieron soluciones a esta epidemia en crecimiento. El secretario de la salud, Dr. Rachel Levine, se unió al panel denominado “Defining Solutions” y compartió con nosotros los esfuerzos que el gobernador ha venido implementando para combatir esta epidemia.

Communities Against The Opioid Epidemic Symposium On Tuesday, October 30th 2018, the Communities Against the Opioid Epidemic Symposium was hosted at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in our State’s Capital. The event, hosted in partnership with the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs, addressed growing concerns surrounding opioid misuse among ethnic, minority and rural communities. The Symposium brought 100 key executives, professionals and officials together who discussed solutions to this growing epidemic. Secretary of Health, Dr. Rachel Levine joined the Defining Solutions panel and also shared the Governor’s efforts towards combatting the epidemic.

How to Handle Work-Related Injuries for the Best Possible Outcome

Injury is never an invited guest in your work or in your home. It demands all of your attention. It consumes all of your resources, and often, it never leaves. For some, injury is a life-altering event that forever changes them physically and emotionally.

When you have all of your health, it is easy to dismiss the prospect of a work injury.

However, in 2017, nearly 175,000 Pennsylvanians reported an injury. None of these workers asked to be injured. None benefited from it. It simply occurred, and some studies show it occurs at higher rates (particularly fatal injuries) among Latino workers.

A Broken Safety Net Pennsylvania workers walk a high wire every day, teetering between safety and injury. They have all of their health, and they have all of their earnings. When injury pushes them from the high wire, they would otherwise fall to the ground—except the state provides a safety net in the form of workers’ compensation. In the safety net, the injured worker is supposed to find a way back to the high wire. It provides wage loss benefits and reimbursement of medical bills, which should allow workers to get the medical treatment they need to return to work.

Sometimes, their focus is at the expense of their own health.

There are some very basic steps every injured worker can take to control the impact of an injury and position themselves to receive the benefits they need: 1. Even if the injury seems minor, report it: The law requires that an injured worker report an injury within 120 days. However, what happens most often is the injured worker does not report his or her injury as soon as it occurs and attempts to work through it. Every day the injury is not reported, the employer has an argument that it is not as severe as the injured worker claims it is.

Reporting your injury takes a little courage, but this challenge is far better than the feeling of regret that accompanies attempting to work through a difficult injury you could have reported earlier.

The problem is that employers and insurance companies are often more sophisticated in the workers’ compensation system than the injured worker. Employers, depending upon size, have processes and personnel in place to get the most out of the system they can get. As a result, the safety net is broken.

Don’t Let Road Blocks Stand in Your Way It is tempting for injured workers to put these considerations on the back-burner while they face the more pressing challenges presented by their injury. This can be particularly true for those injured workers who do not speak English fluently and struggle to communicate within a system that seems to favor employers and insurance companies. However, the system in rising to the challenge through the provision of various interpretation services, and law firms are following suit by providing staff and attorneys that can guide clients through the confusing process with understanding in their native language.

Every injured worker will have to make a choice following their injury. Will their injury define them? Or can they take the steps necessary to win their claim? If they can follow some of the practical steps above, injured Latino workers can position their claim for the rightful outcome they deserve – and to ensure the unwelcomed guest of injury doesn’t take over their professional and personal life.

ACERCA DEL BALLET HISPÁNICO Por Zuiry Gaytán

Como generalmente sucede en todas las historias, el Ballet Hispánico es fruto de la inspiración de una persona: Tina Ramírez. Nacida en Venezuela, de padre mexicano y madre puertorriqueña, Tina emigró a Estados Unidos cuando tenía sólo 7 años, y desde entonces sabía lo que quería hacer en su vida: bailar. De esta manera, y debido a su fuerte inclinación artística, Tina decidió estudiar ballet clásico, así como danza contemporánea y española.

En 1970, Tina funda el Ballet Hispánico.

En ese entonces, la gente veía a los hispanos sólo como una población dedicada a desempeñar los trabajos menos remunerados; nadie prestaba atención alguna a la riqueza cultural de los latinos. Ante estas circunstancias, Tina decidió abrir una escuela de danza, con el claro objetivo de darle voz a los hispanos a través de esta expresión artística. Y como una pequeña semilla, esta pequeña escuela fue creciendo hasta convertirse en la compañía de danza que es hoy: una compañía reconocida y aplaudida a nivel nacional e internacional. Además, el Ballet Hispánico tiene un claro interés por establecer una conexión con la comunidad y, especialmente, por ser un canal de inspiración y apoyo para niños y jóvenes. Definitivamente, el Ballet Hispánico es ejemplo tangible de que ningún sueño es tan grande para ser inalcanzable: sólo se necesita sembrar una semilla, una idea, un deseo, y trabajar duro para verlos crecer y florecer.

Entrevista Con Eduardo Vilaro Por Zuiry Gaytán

En medio de los edificios, y entre el barullo de las calles de la ciudad de Nueva York, hay un lugar en donde verdaderamente se puede sentir y respirar el ritmo latino.

Se trata del Ballet Hispánico, la primera compañía de danza en Estados Unidos dedicada a celebrar y explorar la cultura latina a través de la danza. Como apunta su director, el “Ballet Hispánico es un vehículo para expresar el arte y la cultura. Es un catalizador para el cambio, y un modelo significativo para valorar la diversidad y promover la inclusión” En esta ocasión, Latino Conecction Magazine (LCM) tuvo el privilegio de visitar las instalaciones del Ballet Hispánico y entrevistar a Eduardo Vilaro, director artístico y presidente del Ballet Hispánico, quien amablemente nos abrió las puertas de su corazón para compartir con todos los lectores de LCM sus pensamientos, y platicarnos un poco acerca de la misión, compromisos y retos del ballet.

LCM: ¿Cuál es su visión como director del Ballet Hispánico?

EV: “A nivel local, la misión del Ballet Hispánico es llegar a la comunidad y brindar a los jóvenes la oportunidad de involucrarse en la danza, a través de becas, contactos y soporte artístico.

Por casi 50 años, nuestra escuela de danza ha brindado ese apoyo a los jóvenes. Tenemos un alumnado prominente, como lo fue Jennifer López, ex alumna de nuestra escuela y quien ha llegado a impactar nuestra cultura enormemente.

LCM: ¿Cómo es trabajar en el Ballet Hispánico?

EV: “Trabajar en el Ballet Hispánico, además de ser todo un honor, es muy divertido.

Los bailarines y todo el personal están profundamente conectados con la misión y visión del ballet. Somos una comunidad con lazos tan fuertes que realmente nos consideramos una familia.”

LCM: ¿De qué manera honran y reconocen la tradición a la vez que rompen el molde para hacer presentaciones innovadoras?

EV: “Esta es una muy buena pregunta. La danza, como todas las artes, representa un proceso creativo y experimental, que conlleva nuevas ideas y ciertos riesgos. Por encima de todo, estos riesgos son el ingrediente principal para la innovación. En el Ballet Hispánico tomamos riesgos artísticos. Sabemos que los bailarines son el corazón de toda compañía de danza. Por ello nos interesó conversar con Eila Valls, de España, y Raúl Conteras, de México, bailarines del Ballet Hispánico, quienes nos hablaron un poco de sus experiencias y visión del ballet.

LCM: ¿Qué significa la danza para ti?

Eila: “Cuando salimos de gira, no sólo cumplimos con nuestras presentaciones, también visitamos escuelas, especialmente cuando nos encontramos en zonas marginadas.

Muchos piensan que la danza no es un trabajo.

Piensan que la única manera de ser bailarín es a través de la televisión, y desconocen que hay más opciones. Les sorprende pensar que se puedan narrar historias con la danza y que te puedas comunicar no sólo con el lenguaje hablado, sino también con el lenguaje corporal.”

LCM: Describe el Ballet Hispánico, en una palabra.

Raúl: “Después de una presentación en

Eila: “Es una gran responsabilidad representar a la comunidad latina, porque queremos evitar caer en clichés. Se trata de representar lo que somos sin caer en los estereotipos. Por ejemplo, en estos momentos, debemos ser muy cuidadosos acerca de lo que les decimos a los niños, la manera como representamos a la comunidad, para que no vaya a ser tomado como algo ofensivo. Es todo un reto.”

ABOUT BALLET HISPÁNICO

As with all significant beginnings, Ballet Hispánico came from the inspiration of one individual: Tina Ramirez. Born in Venezuela to parents from Mexico and Puerto Rico, her family moved to the United States when Tina was 7 years old.

And even at the tender age of 7, she knew she wanted dance. That lead her to study classical, contemporary and Spanish dance.

Tina founded Ballet Hispánico in 1970 after she saw a need for a different type of inclusivity. “People didn't know who Hispanics were," she explains. "We were all around New York City, but people thought we were dishwashers, people washing the floors. We weren't paid any attention."

So, she began a dance school with the intention of giving Hispanics an outlet for expression. “I just wanted Hispanics to have a voice in dance and for people to get to know us as people.” Her approach not only revealed to communities the BEAUTY of color, music and culture but it brought these communities and people together.

It is no surprise that from this seed, a small school grew to become a nationally and internationally recognized Company; traveling to countries around the world, interacting with the communities and being an inspiration for many to accomplish their own dreams. Ballet Hispánico is the prime example that no feat is too large; with one seed – whether it be an idea or desire to bring change – each can be accomplished with the right amount of effort.

A Conversation With Eduardo Vilaro

By Zuiry Gaytán In the midst of the city buildings, the hustle and noise of New York City, there is one place where you can see, hear and feel, the Latino beat.

Ballet Hispánico, the first dance company in the United States, strives to celebrate, explore and share Hispanic culture through the expression of dance.

Eduardo Vilaro first joined Ballet Hispánico as a dancer in 1985. In 2009, he returned to join as Ballet Hispánico’s second artistic director.

In both instances, he shares that he was drawn to the mission of the organization which mirror his own personal values of citizenship and service. He was only enthusiastic to share his thoughts and heart with each one of our Latino Connection magazine readers.

LCM: You have previously said you "want everyone that walks in to feel included, 'a little bit Latino.'" Can you tell us what that means to you in terms of diversity and inclusion?

EV: When we can feel that we belong, then we can connect to each other in a deeper way.

While we create works that reflects the Latinx soul, it is full of the human experience which we all share.

LCM: When Ballet Hispánico was founded, Ramirez explained that "people didn't know who Hispanics were." How does Ballet Hispánico help define-educate about Hispanic culture to New York/United States and beyond?

EV: We have come a long way as Hispanics since 1970 when Tina founded the company.

There is more awareness of the Hispanic diaspora through media, food, family, and the artistic landscape. Yet, there is still work to do in refining the knowledge and the way the world sees the culture. The intersection of other diasporas with the Hispanic diaspora is one area that still needs a focus and light shown on it. We forget that the world has been fusing and changing for eons and that we have bonds deeper than we have ever imagined to each other. I think this is the sweet spot for Ballet Hispánico. Sharing who we are as human beings via the lens of the culture is such a fascinating platform. Ballet Hispánico’s art and education process allows us to challenge and illuminate and thus, we discover the points of connection to each other and the world.

EV: On a local level, Ballet Hispánico’s mission for access reaches into the community and provides young people with the ability to find themselves in dance through scholarships,

A Conversation With The Dancers of Ballet Hispanico

As such, we had the privilege of sitting down and conversing with two of the dancers of Ballet Hispanico-- Eila Valls from Spain and Raúl Contreras from Mexico; who shared a little bit of their hearts with us.

LCM: What does dance mean to you?

Eila: Dance is my life, the way I express myself better, dance fills me with joy every day. It is something that has to be perfect, so it pushes you every day.

Raúl: Dance signifies the way I can achieve my goals in life as a human being. We are in a moment where we aren’t sensitive, and I want to make a change in the world, even when it sounds idealistic. I think through dance that I can do that. You never know who is going to be watching you and the impact you are going to make in their lives. We can help make people more sensitive.

LCM: What Does Ballet Hispánico mean to you?

different choreographies, the pieces and flavors are the same. However, Ballet Hispánico has a repertory company. We perform pieces from different choreographers, so each choreography is a different world, has different influences, different languages and movements. That is very enriching for us. If you are always doing the same, 6 hours a day, it can get boring very easily. Here you have to switch several times a day, so that is very refreshing.

Raúl: I discovered that this organization not only has a repertory with different styles of dance but it also exalts the heritage of Latin Culture.

LCM: What moment working for Ballet Hispánico made an impact in your life?

LCM: What challenges have you had to face?

Eila: It is a big responsibility to represent the Latino Community because it is falling into clichés and we want to avoid that. It’s how we embrace who you are without making it a stereotype. For example, in these moments we have to be very careful about what we say to the kids, how you represent the community and that doesn’t be taken as an offensive statement.

That is the challenge. How to be yourself without being yourself, without breaking the plate.

Raúl: I think I have been very fortunate. I have been surrounded by amazing people. When I arrived here, I noticed that as an immigrant you have to carry your flag all the time. I have mixed feelings because I’m super proud to be Mexican but at the same time wherever you go people put a label on you. That is not just for Hispanic but for all minorities. It is not a challenge, but I am more aware of me being Mexican.

Eila: When we go on tour, we not just perform, we also go to schools, especially where there are minorities. Most of them don’t think in dance as a job. They think the only way to become a dancer is through tv, and they don’t know that there are more options. Eila: It’s a platform to explore my roots as a Hispanic. I felt it when I was in Spain; it’s not that I didn’t realize I was Hispanic, but I was not as aware of the significance. This company gives us the opportunity to explore what it means to be Latino or Hispanic. All these countries share so many things and we don’t even realize it.

At the end of the interview, we had the honor of being present in one of the rehearsals. It's incredible how they present in the performance, the music, colors and passion. That's what we think at the end of the month, when we want to purchase something that we think we really want, or when we face an eventuality, and unfortunately, we no longer have cash to cover those costs. And yes, at the moment we can afford to satisfy our desires or to face a contingency, but we forget to think about the consequences of using credit cards indistinctly.

And the truth is that this feeling of satisfaction will last only a few days, until we receive the bills to pay the credit cards. Then, reality will fall like a bucket of cold water. Thus, we will move from momentary happiness to the anguish of: "And now, how am I going to pay?" Committed to cover our payments at the end of the month, we will run out of money again. La ensalada rusa, también conocida como ensaladilla rusa o ensalada Olivier, es una ensalada muy popular en los países latinoamericanos. Para su preparación, se utilizan ingredientes tales como papas, zanahorias, guisantes, manzanas, cebolla, los cuales son amalgamados con mayonesa.

The Russian Salad, also known as Olivier Salad, is a very popular dish in Latin American countries. The main ingredients of this salad are potatoes, carrots, peas, apples, onions, and mayonnaise.

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTES:

3 ½ lb of potatoes, peeled, cooked and diced

Juice of 1-2 lemons, or white vinegar

1 lb carrots (about 6-7 medium carrots), peeled, cooked and diced

1 cup of homemade or purchased mayonnaise
