The smell of the beach and the summer breeze – what a delight!

Now that we have been enjoying our summer, soon many will be heading back to school! I remember during my school years disliking the commercials on TV promoting back to school sales, because I wasn’t ready to go back! I know I was not alone!

Latino Connection is aware of the importance of education and the difference it makes for our Latino community. By completing higher education, many Latinos have been able to establish successful careers. Unfortunately, we still have room to grow. We continue to see a large number of high school dropouts and high school graduates not attending or not graduating from college.

In this issue, we are pleased to share with you the opportunity to learn more about alternatives to high school and how those that face challenges in traditional schools can find a safe haven and opportunities to feel accepted and reach high school graduation and the encouragement to graduate from college.

We had the pleasure to visit the I-LEAD Charter School in Reading, PA and tour their facilities. What we witnessed was impressive! We loved every aspect of the programs, curriculum, the arts, crafts, the beautiful murals, and the dynamic staff! As I was touring the facility, a piece or art that was hanging from a wall caught my attention. I asked about the story behind the artwork and the feelings it was meant to evoke. Josie, the Director of Learning Support Services at I-LEAD, described the beautiful piece of art with great enthusiasm.

She explained that this was a team building experiment during their Professional Development week. The main objective was to encourage their staff members and students to make a doll, which was made from clothespins, and write out what they each will commit to during the next school year. They called it a “Mandela”. This work of art helped me understand the commitment that this organization has to these students and the unity among them.

I invite you to take the time to read and learn more about the I-LEAD Charter School, in this issue, and appreciate the pictures of the beautiful murals in the school. We thank David Castro, President and Founder of I-LEAD and Angel Figueroa, the CEO and Founder of the I-LEAD in Reading, PA, for their warm welcome and taking the time to sit with us to discuss their accomplishments and future goals for the school.

Desde el escritorio del editor ¡El olor de la playa y la brisa durante el verano! ¡Qué delicia! Sin embargo, después de haber disfrutado de estas vacaciones, muy pronto muchos regresarán a la escuela. Recuerdo durante mis años como estudiante el disgusto que me causaban los comerciales de televisión que anunciaban ofertas para el regreso a clases, ¡simplemente porque no estaba lista para hacerlo! Y bien sabía que no era la única en pensar esto…

Sin embargo, en latinoconnection Magazine estamos conscientes de la importancia de la educación y del papel que juega para el mejoramiento de nuestra comunidad. Al terminar la educación superior, muchos latinos han sido capaces de lograr el éxito profesional. Desafortunadamente, aún tenemos mucho que avanzar en este renglón. Existe un alto índice de deserción escolar a nivel preparatoria, y muchos de los estudiantes latinos que sí se gradúan no van a la universidad o abandonan sus estudios antes de concluir su carrera.

En este número, nos complace compartir con ustedes la experiencia de un centro de educación alternativa a nivel preparatoria. Se trata de una escuela que ha sido un refugio para aquellos estudiantes que por múltiples razones no se han beneficiado de los programas de las escuelas tradicionales. Esta escuela les ofrece oportunidades para sentirse aceptados y estimulados para terminar la preparatoria y continuar con sus estudios universitarios.

El centro educativo en cuestión se llama I-LEAD Charter School, y se encuentra en Reading, Pensilvania. En esta ocasión, tuvimos el placer de conocer sus instalaciones, ¡y lo que vimos fue impresionante! Nos encantó cada aspecto del programa, su plan de estudios, la dinámica del personal, sus programas de arte, sus manualidades y, por supuesto, sus hermosos murales. Mientras recorría las instalaciones, una pieza de arte que estaba colgada en una de las paredes llamó mi atención. Pregunté qué era y qué representaba, Josie, la directora de Servicios de Apoyo al Aprendizaje en I-LEAD, con gran entusiasmo describió la hermosa pieza.

Así, nos explicó que la obra había sido producto de un proyecto en equipo durante la semana de Desarrollo Profesional. El objetivo principal era que tanto personal como estudiantes elaboraran una muñeca utilizando tela y alfileres, para luego escribir los objetivos que cada uno de ellos se propondría lograr para el próximo año escolar. La llamaron “Mandela”. Esta obra de arte me ayudó a comprender el compromiso que esta organización tiene con sus estudiantes y la unidad que existe entre ellos.

A través de estas páginas, los invito a que se tomen el tiempo para aprender más acerca de I-LEAD Charter School, y aprecien las fotos y los hermosos murales de la escuela. No Smoke CarnivaL On June 8th, I-LEAD Charter School’s student organization the L.I.T Squad (Leading, Inspiring, Transforming) hosted an antitobacco end-of-school-year carnival. The L.I.T Squad at I-LEAD Charter School along with sponsors Latino Connection, Health Promotion Council, AETNA Better Health of Pennsylvania and TRU in PA American Lung Association hosted the event to promote living a smoke free lifestyle to students and their families, and encourage their peers to take the pledge to live tobacco- free. The carnival featured tobacco related carnival games, prizes, performances from students, treats and educational lessons dedicated to teaching students about the dangers of tobacco use.

Back to school can cause many emotions, since sometimes this experience involves important life transitions. Some families, for example, will take their child for the first time to a child care education center, or to a preschool or elementary school; others will prepare their child to attend their first year in high school or their last year, so they should also think about the preparations for graduation; there are also those who will take their child to college. However, beyond all this, we cannot ignore the problem of violence in schools and the anxiety it causes. Therefore, it is very important not only to educate our children about safety in educational centers, but also to have an action plan to face any dangerous situation.

Below, we offer a small guide of topics to discuss with your child about violence in schools:

Encourage your child to take action to maintain safety at school. Tell him/

her that they have a voice that can be heard, and that if they know of any danger, they should report it. Encourage your child to participate in school clubs that promote school safety.

Discuss school safety procedures.

Help your child understand that the rules

Get involved. Alternative Education with High Expectations

or the last ten years, over 40% of Reading youth have not graduated high school.

Where are they now? Likely unemployed, uninsured, unhealthy, or incarcerated. These young adults are lost to the system, lack adequate work skills, and don’t know where to go to get their lives back on track. The I-LEAD Charter School is one second-chance option for some of these forgotten ones to re-engage in education and direct themselves toward a more positive future.* The Institute for Leadership Education, Advancement, and Development, Inc. (or I-LEAD) is a Pennsylvania nonprofit that has served as a force for community leadership development since 1995. From 1995 through 2005, I-LEAD served as the lead training partner for Urban Genesis, Inc., focusing primarily on the development of community leaders in Philadelphia. From 2001 to 2005, I-LEAD served as the lead training partner for the Pennsylvania Weed and Seed program. In this capacity, through a multi-year grant exceeding $2 million, I-LEAD delivered leadership and organizational development training, as well as related technical assistance services, to faithbased and community organizations in sixteen Pennsylvania cities. The program included not only thousands of hours of leadership and organizational development training delivered on-site to cohorts of grassroots faith-based and community leaders, but also ongoing technical assistance, including regional conferences and the provision of mini-grants to support the leadership development and organizational capacity-building objectives of the program.**

We interviewed Angel Figueroa, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the Reading I-LEAD Charter School. The brain child is David Castro, who started the idea of giving our community and leaders help and inspiration. It was time to rebuild the community, so Governor Tom Ridge asked Castro to start a training program on providing tools and resources to help the community.

With the rise of crime in the area, this came at the right time. Angel is the walking billboard of how this has affected people positively. This program was named “Pennsylvania Weed and Seed Program.” Feeling passionate about his community and knowing the importance to help, he implemented all his energy into this program, which helped thousands of adults in a five-year period.

team to help open the first charter school in Reading, PA. There was a concern, because a large number of students were dropping out of high school. We felt the need to provide a solution– that’s how we started I-LEAD Charter school. The main mission is to focus on at risk, high school dropouts. Many factors come in to play for why these young adults behaved in this manner, such as bullying, ‘high school is too big’, among other reasons.

We were listening to parents complain and asking, ‘what other options are there for our students?’. We wanted to provide options for parents and students to find an alternative place of education and create a safe-haven for them and that is how the I-LEAD Charter School came to exist.

After these great accomplishments, we wanted to learn more about Angel Figueroa.

He is currently the Chief Operations Officer at the School, and serves in a leadership role in the School’s administration. Angel is the embodiment of transformational leadership and a masterful speaker. He works tirelessly to improve himself and his community, and yet he still finds time to be a devoted husband to his wife, Isamac Torres-Figueroa, to be a dedicated father to his daughters, and to be committed to the local community. Figueroa reminisces, “I was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. I was able to beat the odds of getting involved with gangs and getting shot, to becoming a humble successful individual. In 1995, after getting involved in drugs and gangs, Angel started in Lancaster, PA as a student in their I-LEAD program.

He became an official employee in 2002 statewide, and opened an I-LEAD office in Reading, PA. “I joined as a trainer and then I became VP of resource development.

“I was shocked!”, said Figueroa. Here we are in America with so many Latinos; many are not graduating and others that are don’t have a clue of what they are going to do. My goal is to help young adults understand that high school is not a choice it should be a must. Although, high school is an expectation, the true celebration is to have more Latinos graduating from college.

These are adult students that decide to return to school. “We started with 20 and now have over 600 students in South East, PA. I give thanks to my wife who gave me strength to move forward.”

What would you like others to learn about I-LEAD, other than the mission and the vision that it represents? Figueroa responded, “Today I-LEAD has weathered many storms.

We are like the David and Goliath story; thankfully we are David. Throughout the years doing this, I want everyone to know how adults can impact young adults. There’s a misconception, that once you hit a certain point in your teenage life, that there’s no turning back, but that’s not true! Everyone deserves a second chance and I want everyone to know that besides being the highest academic growth in education, we want to help them and welcome and embrace our students. We want to focus on their state of mind and emotions and then focus on their educational wellness because we offer an alternative education with high expectations.

Figueroa concluded, “My dear friend and mentor, David Castro, once told me that what we are doing with I-LEAD is not about making money but about changing lives. This was one of our first conversations when I started with I-LEAD. At the time it confused me because I thought that the only way to promote and grow this vision was by raising dollars. Fast forward fifteen years; I now understand that our impact and capabilities are worth more than money. It is about passing on the lessons that I have learned, paying it forward to others with no reciprocal expectations.”

Angel Figueroa is a transformational leader and powerful communicator. He has extensive years of conducting leadership development training throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. His passion for training adults and youth has led him to become the President of the Puerto Rican Latin Association of Berks County. He is also the founder of the Berks County Latino Chamber of Commerce and was the co-author of the Berks County Latino Leadership Institute.

David M. Castro is a graduate of Haverford College (1983) and the University of Pennsylvania Law School (1986). In 1993, following a successful career both in private practice and as a Philadelphia prosecutor, he was awarded a Fellowship in the Kellogg Foundation National Leadership Program. He devoted his Fellowship to the study of community leadership and its relation to improving quality of life.

Based upon this work, in 1995 Mr. Castro founded I-LEAD, Inc., a school for community leadership development that has served several thousand emerging leaders across Pennsylvania through its affiliation with Pennsylvania Weed and Seed. In 2002, in recognition of his work on behalf of Pennsylvania communities, David was awarded an Eisenhower Fellowship, which he used to study leadership and its impact on economic and community development in Turkey. In 2009, in recognition of his development of an accredited Associate Degree program in Leadership delivered in underserved neighborhoods through innovative community-education partnerships, Mr. Castro was named an Ashoka Fellow by the Ashoka Global Funds for Social Change. Ashoka is an international community of the world's leading social entrepreneurs. A teacher at heart, David is frequently consulted as a speaker, serving on panel discussions and contributing regularly via blogs and articles posted through the Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance and the Ashoka network.

He ran for office and his unique enthusiasm led him to become the first Hispanic to be elected city councilman in the City of Reading. As one of the youngest ever to serve, he began his term in office at the age of 27. All the while he served as Vice President of Resource Development for I-LEAD, Inc. With his commitment to education unyielding, he committed himself to continuing his academic career. He finished his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Albright College and completed his Master’s in Business Administration from Kutztown University in 2010.

He is currently the Chief Operations Officer at the School, and serves in a leadership role in the School’s administration. Angel is the embodiment of transformational leadership and a masterful speaker.

En esta ocasión, tuvimos el honor de conversar con Ángel Figueroa, director ejecutivo y fundador de I-LEAD Charter School de Reading, quien nos explicó: “I-LEAD Charter School es producto de una iniciativa de David Castro para promover el desarrollo de líderes comunitarios. Era el momento de reconstruir nuestra comunidad. Por ello, el gobernador Tom Ridge se dirigió a Castro para sugerirle que comenzara un programa enfocado a brindar asistencia y recursos en beneficio de la comunidad. Con el incremento de la delincuencia, era el momento justo para hacerlo. Él es un ejemplo viviente de cómo esta iniciativa ha afectado positivamente a nuestra comunidad. El programa en cuestión se llamó Weed and Seed. Apasionado por su comunidad y consciente de la importancia de ayudar, dedicó toda su energía al programa, el cual benefició a miles de adultos en un periodo de 5 años”.

E

n los últimos 10 años, 40% de la juventud de Reading, Pensilvania, no se ha graduado de la preparatoria. ¿Cuál es la situación actual de estos adultos jóvenes?

Probablemente se encuentren desempleados, sin seguro médico, con problemas de salud o, en el peor de los casos, encarcelados. Para el sistema, esta población está perdida. Carentes de una capacitación adecuada para conseguir trabajo, no saben a dónde dirigirse para rehacer sus vidas. Ante esta problemática, la escuela preparatoria I-LEAD Charter School se propuso ofrecer una segunda oportunidad a estos jóvenes adultos con objeto de que puedan continuar con su preparación académica y lograr así un mejor futuro.* El Instituto para el Fomento y Desarrollo de Liderazgo Educativo, Inc., conocido como I-LEAD, es una institución sin fines de lucro del estado de Pensilvania, al servicio de la comunidad desde 1995. A partir de su fundación hasta el 2005, I-LEAD fungió como socio para la capacitación de Urban Genesis, dedicando sus esfuerzos al desarrollo de líderes comunitarios de Filadelfia. Asimismo, de 2001 al 2005, esta vez como socio principal para la capacitación del programa Weed and Seed de Pensilvania, I-LEAD se dedicó al entrenamiento de líderes comunitarios y desarrollo organizacional, así como a la prestación de servicios relacionados con la asistencia técnica, a organizaciones comunitarias y confesionales en 16 ciudades de Pensilvania. Con un subsidio plurianual que rebasó los 2 millones de dólares, el programa incluyó no sólo miles de horas de capacitación en liderazgo y desarrollo organizacional en sitio, sino asistencia técnica, como son conferencias y otorgamiento de mini-subsidios para el fomento del desarrollo organizacional y de liderazgo comunitario.**

Cuando le pedimos que nos describiera su pasión y el porqué de I-LEAD Charter School, Ángel Figueroa respondió que su inspiración llegó cuando fue electo concejal municipal en 2002, en Reading, Pensilvania. Después decidió postularse como alcalde, lo cual inspiró a muchos otros adultos. Frecuentemente hablaba con jóvenes, y recuerda hacerles la siguiente pregunta: ¿cuáles son tus planes cuando termines la preparatoria? Siempre lo miraban confundidos, porque decían: nadie antes me había hecho tal pregunta. Al respecto, comentó: “Me quedaba realmente sorprendido. Estamos aquí, en América, con una población latina considerable, y muchos no se gradúan, y los que lo hacen, no tiene idea de lo que harán a futuro. Mi meta es ayudar a los jóvenes adultos a entender que la preparatoria no es una cuestión de elección sino una meta a alcanzar. Aunque la preparatoria sea de por sí un logro, queremos que más latinos se gradúen de la universidad.

Ángel Figueroa es un líder transformacional y un gran comunicador.

Cuenta con una extensa carrera en la conducción de capacitación en el desarrollo de liderazgo a lo largo y ancho del estado de Pensilvania.

Su pasión en la capacitación de jóvenes y adultos lo ha llevado a convertirse en presidente de la Asociación Latina Puertorriqueña del condado de Berks. También es fundador de la Cámara Latina de Comercio y coautor del Instituto Latino de Liderazgo del mismo condado.

Se postuló para un cargo público, y su entusiasmo lo llevó a convertirse en el primer hispano electo como concejal de la ciudad de Reading, siendo así uno de los más jóvenes servidores públicos, ya que comenzó su labor a la edad de 27 años. Además, fungió como vicepresidente de Desarrollo de Recursos de I-LEAD, Inc. Con un compromiso con la educación inflexible, se propuso continuar su carrera. Así, terminó su licenciatura en Gestión Empresarial en Albright College y completó su maestría en Administración de Empresas en la Universidad de Kutztown en 2010.

Actualmente trabaja sin descanso como oficial de Operaciones de I-LEAD Charter School, además de su posición de liderazgo en la misma institución. A pesar de ser un luchador incansable para lograr su superación personal y para ayudar a su comunidad, encuentra tiempo para ser el esposo devoto de Isamac Torres-Figueroa, su compañera, y un padre dedicado a sus hijas. Su compromiso es siempre con su familia y con su comunidad.

David Castro es graduado de Haverford College (1983) y de la Escuela de Derecho de la Universidad de Pensilvania (1986). En 1993, tras una exitosa carrera en la práctica privada y como fiscal de Filadelfia, se hizo acreedor a una beca del Programa Nacional de Liderazgo de la Fundación Kellogg. Esta beca la dedicó al estudio de la relación entre liderazgo comunitario y calidad de vida. A partir de su interés por este tema, en 1995 fundó I-LEAD, una escuela cuya misión es la preparación de estudiantes comprometidos con el desarrollo comunitario. De esta manera, I-LEAD ha servido a la formación de miles de líderes comunitarios emergentes a lo largo de Pensilvania, a través de su afiliación con el programa “Weed and Seed”. En 2002, como un reconocimiento a su labor y en nombre de la comunidad de Pensilvania, David Castro recibió la beca Eisenhower, la cual dedicó al estudió del liderazgo y su impacto en el desarrollo económico y comunitario en Turquía. En 2009, como un reconocimiento a su desempeño en un programa acreditado en Liderazgo dirigido a comunidades marginadas, a través de una relación innovativa entre comunidad y educación, David Castro fue nombrado Emprendedor Ashoka, por la Fondos Globales para el Cambio Social.

Space Station Cargo Spacecraft Launch from Virginia, CRS-9 mission

In the early hours of Monday, May 21, I had the opportunity of a lifetime. I witnessed the launch of the Antares Orbital ATK rocket from NASA Wallops in Virginia. I was one of the fifty people selected to attend this event this event from a program called NASA Social. NASA Social is a program to provide opportunities for NASA's social media followers to learn and share information about NASA's missions, people, and programs. NASA Social program includes both special in-person events and social media credentials for individuals who share the news in a significant way. This program has brought thousands of people together for unique social media experiences of exploration and discovery.

The Antares rocket is a two-stage vehicle (with optional third stage) that provides lowEarth orbit (LEO) launch capability for payloads weighing up to 8,000 kg. Internally funded by Northrop Grumman, Antares completed a risk reduction mission and a demonstration of commercial re-supply services for the International Space Station under a NASA Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) agreement in 2013. Atop in the rocket was the Cygnus cargo spacecraft designed and operated by Orbital ATK Sciences Corporation.

Cygnus transport pressurized cargo to the International Space Station (ISS). Once it reach the ISS, the astronauts on board empty the cargo, is again loaded with thrash, and no longer needed items. The vehicle then performs a number of engine burns to depart the vicinity of ISS. Once at a safe distance, Cygnus performs its deorbit burn to re-enter the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. During re-entry, the vehicle breaks up and burns up to some extent before surviving fragments fall into the Pacific, far away from populated land masses.

What was on board during the CRS-9 mission? Among the 7,400 pounds of cargo

aboard Cygnus, are science experiments, crew supplies and vehicle hardware. One of the science experiments that caught my attention was the Microgravity Investigation of Cement Solidification (MICS). Aleksandra Radlińska, of Penn State, is the principal investigator of this program. She said during our event that to assess the feasibility of cement as a process for constructing potential future space habitat structures, the effects of microgravity on the process must be understood. Astronauts aboard the space station would combine pre-packaged bags of cement and water, and then halt the chemical process with an alcohol additive.

The samples would then be returned to Earth for comparison with equivalent ground-based

samples. Another experiment aboard the Cygnus spacecraft was small satellites called CubeSats. It is a class small satellite each about the size of a cereal box.

The launch of the Orbital ATK was originally schedule for Sunday, May 20 but it was delayed one day because of the weather and last minute inspections. The Antares mission began liftoff form pad oA from NASA Wallops Island at 4:44 a.m. EDT. We were located only 1.8 miles from the launch pad to witness this event. It was on the most amazing experience of my entire life. It was a column of fire and roar, just outstanding, and outstanding launch.

Latino Connection heads to Puerto Rico

En las primeras horas del lunes 21 de mayo, tuve la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia única. Ese día fui testigo del lanzamiento del cohete Antares de Orbital ATK, de la NASA Wallops, en Virginia. Gracias al programa encuentros sociales de la NASA, conocido como NASA Social, se seleccionó un total de 50 personas para atender este evento. Este programa tiene como objetivo brindar oportunidades a los seguidores de los medios sociales de la NASA, no sólo para conocer sino para divulgar información referente a sus misiones espaciales, a sus colaboradores y a sus programas. El programa NASA Social incluye tanto eventos especiales en persona, como credenciales en los medios sociales para quienes divulguen noticias de la institución de una manera significativa. Lo grandioso de este programa es que ha logrado reunir a miles de personas para participar de una experiencia única en los medios sociales en lo que se refiere a la exploración y al descubrimiento del espacio, y su divulgación.

Earlier this year in the month of May, Latino Connection travelled to Puerto Rico to deliver donations for families who were victims of Hurricane Maria. I interviewed Leslie Ruiz, Katherine Vargas, Pedro Fernandez and George Fernandez, core members of the Latino Connection team concerning this wonderful experience. As we chatted, I could not help but notice the tears in their eyes, the gratitude and love in their expression and the impact it left on them as a team.

LC Magazine (LCM): What did you feel as you gave the residents of Puerto Rico the items donated by the community in Harrisburg?

Pedro: I felt extremely happy!

El cohete Antares es un lanzador dos etapas (con opción a tres) capaz de situar 8,000 kg de toneladas de carga útil en la órbita baja (LEO).

Internamente desarrollado por Northrop Grumman, Antares completó una misión de reducción de riesgo y una demostración de servicios para reabastecimiento a la Estación Espacial Internacional, conforme al acuerdo del programa Servicios Comerciales de Transporte Orbital (COTS, por sus siglas en inglés), de 2013.

La nave de carga Cygnus, diseñada y operada por la empresa Orbital ATK, se ubica en la parte superior del cohete, y tiene como misión transportar carga presurizada a la Estación Espacial Internacional (ISS, por sus siglas en inglés). Al llegar a esta estación, los astronautas a bordo se dedican a vaciar la carga, para cargarla posteriormente con deshechos. Finalmente, la nave de carga realiza su despegue, y una vez que alcanza cierta distancia segura se desorbitará y desintegrará, para así reingresar a la atmosfera sobre el Océano Pacífico. Sin embargo, algunos pedazos de la nave caerán en dicho océano, lejos de masas terrestres habitables.

Pero, ¿en qué consistió la carga de la misión CRS? Pues bien, la nave transportaba 7,400 libras de carga, conformada por experimentos científicos, suministros para la tripulación y equipamiento diverso. Respecto a los experimentos científicos, uno de los que más

llamó mi atención fue la Investigación de Microgravedad de Solidificación de Cemento (MICS, por sus siglas en inglés). Aleksandra Radlińska, Profesora Asistente de Penn State, es la principal investigadora de este programa.

Durante el evento, nos explicó que para evaluar el uso de cemento en el proceso de construcción a futuro de estructuras habitables en el espacio, es imprescindible entender los efectos de la microgravedad. Los astronautas a bordo de la estación espacial combinan bolsas de cemento pre empaquetadas con agua, posteriormente frenan el proceso químico con un aditivo de alcohol. Las muestras serán posteriormente enviadas a la tierra para su comparación con muestras equivalentes procesadas en la Tierra.

Otro experimento a bordo de la nave de carga Cygnus fue los satélites pequeños llamados CubeSats. ¡Se trata de satélites del tamaño de una caja de cereal!

Originalmente, la fecha del lanzamiento del cohete Antares Orbital ATK estaba programada para el 20 de mayo. Sin embargo, el lanzamiento se retrasó un día a causa de las condiciones climáticas e inspecciones de último momento.

El despegue de la nave comenzó a las 4:40 de la mañana de la rampa OA de las Instalaciones de Vuelo de Wallops Island, Virginia. Nosotros nos localizábamos sólo a 1.8 millas de la plataforma para observar el lanzamiento. Definitivamente, se trató de una de las experiencias más espectaculares de toda mi vida. ¡El lanzamiento provocó una columna de fuego y estruendo, fue realmente sorprendente e inolvidable!

Katherine: The experience was wonderful! I was so happy to have been able to contribute and help those that truly needed it!

Pedro: At first, they didn't want to receive the donations because they believed it was from their Government. They’ve felt abandoned by those who were supposed to help them. Many were even yelling at us. Yet, once they realized that we were fellow citizens, especially from the Harrisburg community, they couldn’t stop the tears of joy and appreciation. They repeatedly blessed us!

Katherine: Exactly! With one act— just a “little” bit, we were able to change expressions of sadness to smiles!

LCM: Leslie, you were the one who began this donation drive in Harrisburg for Puerto Rico. Why did you feel such a strong need to do this?

Leslie: Not only am I from Puerto Rico, I grew up there—but I also have friends and family that still live there. I personally know their continued struggle. The fact that I couldn’t physically be there during the disaster, I felt like I needed to do something. It helped me cope with my own pain, to organize this drive in the Harrisburg community.

2 pepinos holandeses (se caracterizan por ser largos y de piel lisa) sin pelar y cortados en brunoise Aceitunas negras sin semilla 1 frasco de dados de feta en aceite y especias

2. Coloque las verduras en un platón grande para ensaladas, y agregue el perejil y el ajo. Mézclelas bien y sazónelas con sal al gusto.

3. Destape el queso feta y separe los daditos de queso del aceite con especias. Vierta nuevamente el aceite al frasco.

4. Agregue los daditos de queso feta y 4 o 5 cucharadas de aceite con especias sobre las verduras. Mezcle bien, cuidando que el queso no se desmorone demasiado.

5. Cubra la ensalada con plástico para cocina y refrigérala hasta el momento en que se vaya a servir.

6. Finalmente, decore la ensalada con las aceitunas negras y con hojas de albahaca fresca.
