LCFC Familia, Putting together this annual report is something we look forward to every year. It's an opportunity to look back on all the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado (LCFC) did to serve the Latino, immigrant, and refugee communities of Colorado and pause to thank the donors, funders and donors who helped to make it happen. But this time it is with a heavy heart that we turn back to the previous year. We remember the personal losses and community struggles; the tearful conversations and the feelings of helplessness that were such a constant in 2020.

But in these trying times we also see how so many of us came together to lift up the Latino community. We did so by sending $1,960,199 into community—but also through other types of support. LCFC hosted 15 virtual events, released 10 comprehensive data reports, and assisted in the distribution of rent support and other basic needs efforts to help to keep Latinos in their own homes with enough food on the table. All of this despite the economic, health, and educational barriers that tested our community time and time again.

Throughout this report you will see sections dedicated to the stories and voices of our community. There is no better way to understand the immense and overwhelming need Latino Coloradans experienced in 2020 nor the impact of the work of LCFC than to listen to our grantees, grassroots leaders, and community members tell their own stories. These are the stories of community members infected with COVID who turned to small, local nonprofits for services, multigenerational families coming together to experience virtual events, rural nonprofit leaders who are thankful for the support of colleagues hundreds of miles away, and so much more.

AYUDA (HELP) COLORADO When the COVID-19 pandemic first struck in March of 2020, The Latino Community Foundation of Colorado (LCFC) knew we would have to react quickly. After 70+ phone calls with community members in March, internal planning, and generous support from other foundations and donors, LCFC launched Ayuda “Help” Colorado—a three-tiered response designed specifically to support and stabilize Latino-led and -serving nonprofit organizations and immigrant and refugee serving organizations.

The Ayuda Colorado strategy moved beyond traditional funding to respond to community needs in three ways: grantmaking and investments, data and resources, and capacity building opportunities.

GRANTMAKING & INVESTMENTS The most simple and direct way to support the Latino, immigrant, and refugee communities in 2020 was with rapid, easy-to-distribute funding to the nonprofit organizations already serving these communities.

The LCFC team developed a simplified, streamlined, bilingual system for applications and grant distribution in order to ensure that nonprofit organizations could improve technology use, provide basic needs for community members, keep their doors open by having support for general operating costs, and pilot innovative problem-solving ventures.

"A woman tested positive for COVID-19 and was very ill. She was not eligible for any financial help nor had health insurance. Her husband and kids also had to be quarantined leaving the family in complete instability. This family had a low level of understanding of English, and therefore had never really used our services before. A friend connected us and we were able to help the family get tested, provided information and education regarding COVID, provided much needed PPE for the whole family, assigned a tutor (virtually) for both her children so they were not falling behind in school, and helped them get school supplies."

(Integrated Community also got this family rental and food assistance from a private source, provided interpretation services for a spouse to help him get financial assistance at our local hospital and helped them communicate with their employers and kid's school teachers.)

DATA & RESOURCES

CAPACITY BUILDING

The Ayuda Colorado Data and Resources strategy was designed to provide information to two groups simultaneously:

Capacity building for Latino, immigrant, and refugee serving nonprofits is about more than sessions on fundraising, long-term sustainability, and crisis management for nonprofit leaders. For LCFC, Capacity Building is about relationship building. 70% of our organizations reported that they were seeking further collaboration and staff support through the pandemic. We began offering this via roundtables.

Governmental institutions, statewide funders, and others who could use the data to better understand the Latino community of Colorado how to assist financially and otherwise.

Community leaders, Latino-led and -serving nonprofits, and individuals in need of culturally relevant and bilingual data, resources, and learning opportunities.

HOW WE ACCOMPLISHED THIS Created four COVID-19 Impact Reports.

Co-hosted a "Knowledge in Power and Action" webinar with the Latino Leadership Institute.

Created Action Briefs on Latinos and specific elements of the pandemic: Health, Education, Economy, and Civic Engagement.

Hosted local and culturally relevant resource lists online including those on anti-racism strategies.

Gathered data and stories from nonprofit leaders to inform Ayuda Colorado grantmaking.

Monthly relationship building roundtables throughout 2020 created space for personal connections that helped often isolated leaders receive support from each other during a challenging time and provided a safe space to learn, connect, process, and provide information.

Over 115 organizational and community leaders joined for monthly roundtables in 2020.

CONTINUING OUR WORK In addition to over $1 million in responsive grantmaking through Ayuda CO, LCFC continued programs and longterm philanthropic efforts throughout 2020:

LATINO AGE WAVE COLORADO Latino Age Wave Colorado (LAWC) was designed to improve the lives of Latino older adults and their caregiving families so they may thrive in community. Launched in 2010, LAWC has been the longest running program of LCFC, and served as the inspiration for much of LCFC’s organization-wide strategy and community-centered approach to philanthropy. This year, LCFC officially sunset this program but not before working closely with the Conectoras de Montbello—four community members who managed the day-to-day of LAWC—to form their own organization to continue this important work in the Montbello neighborhood of Denver. YOUNG LATINO PHILANTHROPISTS Using the giving circle concept, Young Latino Philanthropists (YLP) aged 35 and under are investing in the advancement of innovative programs across Colorado through culturally relevant grantmaking. In 2020, YLP funded five statewide organizations working to provide mental health services support immigrant entrepreneurs, and more. Once the pandemic hit, the YLP Leadership team allowed all grantees to redirect funding to any organizational needs in order to further support these nonprofits.

COLORADO IMMIGRANT FUNDERS COLLABORATIVE In January of 2020, LCFC provided $158,000 to 18 Latino, immigrant, and refugee serving organizations as part of the Colorado Immigrant Funders Collaborative (CIFC). As COVID-19 spread and began to disproportionately negatively impact immigrant and refugee communities, these nimble, often small organizations were the first stop and often the only trusted resource for immigrants and refugees who required services but could not count on government programs or larger nonprofits to be open or welcoming.

"In the spring of 2020, Martha expressed that she was reluctant to participate in a Zoom (cafecito) because she had always felt fearful of using technology. Over the course of the past few months and with encouragement from one of the promotoras through regular phone conversations, she has been one of the most active members this year, learning new virtual platforms and staying in contact regularly with the Outreach team. She also participated in El Centro’s Census promotion project.

LATINAS IN LEADERSHIP

LAS MUJERES VALIENTES Inspired by Women of Wisdom (Latinas 50+), the Las Mujeres Valientes Statewide Fellowship (LMV) was created to reduce ageism, create shared learning opportunities, and transfer knowledge so that all generations of Latinas can thrive.

Together, LMV's six diverse leaders build community across Colorado through culturally responsive events and gatherings in this fellowship supported by the NextFifty Initiative.

Over 2000 Latinas interact online and share stories through the Las Mujeres Valientes Facebook group and Latinas LEAD Facebook page.

While the six Las Mujeres Valientes fellows were not able to host many in-person events in 2020, they helped to lead unique online sessions hand-in-hand with Latinas LEAD (more info below). Over 1000 Latinas experienced events thanks to LMV and the cohort worked together on responsive projects such as an effort to distribute cloth masks to migrant farmworkers in the San Luis Valley.

LATINAS LEAD One of LCFC's most enduring programs, Latinas LEAD exists to strengthen the leadership development of Latinas so they can drive social change. Community driven and powered by small personal donations, the Latinas LEAD giving circle distributes $10,000 each year to small organizations that are dedicated to growing the professional and personal leadership of Latinas.

Though the 2020 in-person Latinas LEAD Power Summit was cancelled, last summer Latinas LEAD and Las Mujeres Valientes together hosted five livestreamed events with inspirational Latinas including nationally recognized authors, grassroots leaders, and on-the-ground activists in Colorado.

Through the Latinas LEAD Virtual Leadership Series, over 800 Colorado Latinas joined together to listen, learn, and connect during events hosted in English and Spanish.

100% of Latinas who attended the Latinas LEAD Virtual Leadership Series said that they were "inspired and empowered" by the content.

OUR STORY FORUM 2020 The 7th annual Our Story Forum was truly like no other event in LCFC's history. Though our fully virtual two-day Forum was without the handshakes and hugs of previous in-person events, we experienced lively online discussions and welcomed inspirational local and national speakers, panelists, and artists who made our hearts soar and moved attendees to action.

While virtual events have drawbacks, the online platform allowed attendees to experience the event easily with family and friends in their homes, in English and in Spanish, and from the comfort of any region of our great state. We were also able to welcome more national speakers than our in-person events—including Presidential Inaugural Poet for President Obama Richard Blanco as our Keynote Speaker, Arturo Vargas (NALEO Education Fund), Ramon Contreras (Co-Founder Youth Over Guns), and award-winning poet and performer Denice Frohman. Thirteen grassroots organizations were also highlighted in our Advocacy Central section to raise awareness of the work being done by these leaders.

The Our Story Forum had 34,801 online impressions, 2041 engagements, and is now hosted on YouTube for continued reach.

All five generations were present at the Our Story Forum from the Silent Generation (born 1927 - 1945) to Generation Z (born after 1996).

COLORADO ACTION AWARDS As part of the 2020 Our Story Forum, LCFC teamed up with AT&T to create the Colorado Action Awards (CAA). The CAA were designed to fund projects that boost civic engagement in order to foster a democracy that is inclusive of the over 1 million Latinos in the state of Colorado. Ten organizations and communities were selected for $2,500 Colorado Action Awards, for a total of $25,000 in funding to strengthen inclusive and equitable democratic values in local communities.

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE

With 2020 in the rearview mirror, LCFC is taking our learnings from this year and applying them to continued community work and innovative new initiatives in 2021.

COVID-19 CONTINUED RESPONSE AND RECOVERY LCFC is concentrating on assisting in equitable vaccine distribution to Latino, immigrant, and refugee communities and in supporting organizations with the tools to recover, rebuild, and plan for the future after a year dedicated to rapid response.

BUILDING OUR CAPACITIES LCFC's latest project, Adelante Colorado, a three-year effort dedicated to building the capacities of Latino-led and –serving nonprofits and leaders in Colorado.

COLORADO COMMUNITIES OF COLOR LOAN FUND This multi-million dollar effort will create a no-interest or low-interest revolving loan fund for nonprofits of color to have access to capital as they rebuild and reimagine their organizations.

ADVOCACY EFFORTS 2020 was not only the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, but of the once-every-10-years census, a national election, an historic ruling on DACA, and the rapid growth of the Black Lives Matter movement as a response to police violence against BIPOC communities. As transformative political events and movements impact our communities, LCFC will continue to advocate for our communities, speak truth to power, and grow advocacy efforts statewide.
