Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez is a grassroots foreign citizen, maneuvering and resisting assimilation and respectability politics through, what she calls, her chonga Mujerista ethics. She is from Managua, Nicaragua, and currently lives in Nashville, TN. In 2015, Prisca graduated with her Masters of Divinity from Vanderbilt University. She is the Founder of Latina Rebels, an online platform that boasts over 100k followers. Currently she is a writer at Philadelphia Printworks, TeleSur, SupaDaily Latina, Chica Magazine, Mitú, BeVisible Latinx, Vivala and a slew of other publications. Her interests are within biopolitics as it relates to Latina embodiment, specifically concerning models of conquerable flesh around narratives of naturalization for women of color.

Robyn Moreno is the Editorial Director of Latina, the largest media property aimed at Latinas in the U.S. She’s also a lifestyle expert, Emmy-nominated TV host, author and blogger at RobynMoreno.com - a blog that helps women easily infuse beauty and joy into everyday life. Robyn appears regularly on The Today Show, Wendy Williams, Extra, CBS Early Morning Show, The Steve Harvey Show, Fox and Friends, CNN and CNBC, among other national and local outlets. She hosted her own show, Pockets of Pretty, on the I Heart Radio Talk network. A proud Latina of Mexican-American heritage, Robyn has cowritten and co-edited several books including Border-line Personalities: A New Generation of Latinas Dish on Sex, Sass, and Cultural Shifting, an honest and irreverent anthology about life as a modern Latina.

Inspiración Andrea Guendelman is the CEO and Co-Founder of BeVisible.soy, the professional network for Latinx. Andrea attended Harvard Law School and after graduating, worked as the Associate Director of the Center for the Advancement of Hispanics in Science and Engineering Education. She later practiced law as a corporate attorney at Debevoise & Plimpton, the Export Import Bank of the United States and Microvest Capital Management. Andrea has experience in promoting Latina education and entrepreneurship through her work at nonprofits, such as the Center for the Advancement of Hispanics in Science and Engineering Education and the National Center for Women in Technology.

Abby Maldonado is currently an HR Business Partner at Pinterest after working as a Diversity Programs Manager for the company. She helped lead Pinterest's efforts to diversify its workforce through external outreach and by implementing data driven internal programs, including Pinterest’s first Apprenticeship Program for engineering candidates from nontraditional education backgrounds. Abby also managed Pinterest's intern program as a member of the University Recruiting team and travelled to campuses to recruit the next generation of Pinterest employees. She is a member of the Workforce Investment San Francisco Board. Abby earned a degree in labor relations from Cornell University's Industrial and Labor Relations School.

Workshop Leaders Cristina Aguilar is the Executive Director for the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR). Inspired by her childhood as a queer Latina in the border town of El Paso, Texas, Aguilar leads COLOR in their efforts to develop young leaders, empower the Colorado Latinx community to shape policies that impact their lives and urge lawmakers to stand with Latinas. She was just named one of 2017’s Top 25 Most Powerful Women of Colorado by the Colorado Women's Chamber of Commerce. She was also selected to be a Livingston Fellow and a German Marshall Fund Marshall Memorial Fellow where she travelled to five countries exploring reproductive justice approaches and innovation through a global lens.

Midy Aponte is the Vice President of Spitfire. Her portfolio addresses domestic public education reform, equity and multiculturalism in the U.S. and advocacy for Internet freedom through civil society organizations in Latin America and Africa. She’s also focused on advancing critical environmental priorities and climate change agendas. Midy is a communication strategist by trade and a futurist at heart. Her career spans the public and private sector and has often intersected with pressing policy and social issues affecting societal systems. She is nationally recognized for her ability to devise local, state and national campaign strategies that are sustainable, creatively conceptualized and smartly implemented. She is respected among corporate representatives, political thought leaders, community advocates and next-generation Millennial influencers.

Dr. Phillip B. Danielson is Professor of Molecular and Forensic Biology at the University of Denver and a private business owner. He currently oversees a forensic research and development program. Before earning his PhD., however, he lived in Tokyo, Japan, during the "Bubble Economy" where he learned asset allocation strategies, technical stock investing and how prudent investors can avoid hype, speculation and the inevitable booms and busts of the economy to ensure a financially comfortable future.

Rochelle Galindo was born and raised in Greeley, Coloradoand is the daughter of working class parents that labored in trailer hauling and the meat industry. Her public service journey began as a field organizer in 2012. Since then she has been involved on top targeted local and national campaigns. She was recognized for her work by the Hispanic Women of Weld County when they presented her with their Community Leadership Award. She was also awarded the Volunteer of the Year award from the Colorado Democratic Party. In November 2015 she was elected as the first openly gay elected official to the City of Greeley and is working to ensure that Greeley has the type of leadership that reflects the people it represents.

Diamond Garcia is the President of Adelante Mujer, Inc. This dynamic millennial started her leadership journey 10 years ago as a high school student. “I believe in what Adelante Mujer does and recognize the role it has played in my life as a young adult.” Motherhood has also shaped Diamond’s journey. She is the proud mother of a three year old. “It has challenged me to do more and to be even greater than I thought was possible.” Diamond manages her own Etsy shop where she markets her creative talents and gains business skills. Her goals are to complete her bachelor’s degree from Regis University, grow her community leadership and personal business and be a loving mother. Diamond credits her family as her motivation and her biggest support network.

Dora Gonzales is the Treasurer for the Adelante Mujer, Inc. Board. She has served in education for over 30 years as a middle and high school mathematics teacher. She completed her career at Colorado Springs School District 11 as the Mathematics Coordinator. Today, she consults with Pikes Peak’s Board Of Cooperative Educational Services. Dora is active in various nonprofit organizations that serve the needs of Latina Women. She has also been involved in the American Government Issue Forum serving at the local, state and national level. She is currently the Colorado State Women’s Chair continuing to advocate for veterans, veteran families and women. Education equity is Dora’s passion and she continues to seek opportunities to empower the Latina community.

Dr. Janet Lopez is a senior program officer at Rose Community Foundation where she directs the Education program area. Her portfolio focuses on improving public education through systemic change and educator effectiveness. Janet received a bachelor’s degree from Southwestern University, a master’s degree from the University of Colorado Boulder and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her book, Undocumented Students and the Policies of Wasted Potential, focuses on the experiences of college-ready, undocumented high school students in North Carolina. Janet has worked nationally, statewide and locally on policy issues, serves as a board member and adviser to several organizations and continues to be a champion for Latinos in education.

Destiny N. Mariz is a Personal Banking Specialist at U.S. Bank. She was born and raised in Centennial, Colorado. She graduated from Arapahoe High School and Arapahoe Community College. Destiny has been with U.S. Bank for eight years and has held the following positions in that time: Teller, Teller Supervisor, Personal Banker, Assistant Branch Manager and, most recently, a promotion to Personal Banking Specialist. Destiny volunteers regularly for the Latinas First Foundation, the American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, Mile High United Way and Junior Achievement. She is an active board member for the U.S. Bank Women of Denver Business Resource Group. Destiny enjoys spending her free time with her eight year old son.

Cec Sanchez de Ortiz’s life’s work has been dedicated to working with Latino communities, fighting against and addressing structural and institutionalized inequities. Her passion for this work stems from when she was young, watching and learning from her mother who helped Mexican immigrant families settle into their small farming community in rural Colorado. Cec currently serves as Senior Advisor for the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado and is a Senior Fellow of Community Democracy Workshop, a team of national experts working to improve the practices of democracy in addressing community issues. Her experience as a community leader, nonprofit CEO, State appointee and overall champion for change gives her a unique perspective on Latina leadership..

Annette Quintana brings 20 years of business experience (14 as an entrepreneur) to Istonish. In 1990, she founded an information technology services company that has grown into an international business. Annette’s leadership and vision continues to drive the evolution of new and compelling offerings. Her credibility as a business leader has been confirmed through many business recognitions and awards. Many of these acknowledge her commitment to building an innovative, successful and positive company for employees, as well as her leadership and involvement in the community. Annette holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Colorado State University.

Victoria Quintana facilitates CEO Advisory Boards and works with executives on leadership. She is currently on the board of Children’s Hospital, AAA of Colorado and Istonish, a technology services company she co-founded and operated with her sister for 25 years. Victoria is actively involved in the Denver community through both leadership and philanthropy supporting initiatives devoted to children, education, healthcare, technology and business. Victoria is a graduate of the School of Business at Colorado State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial relations. Victoria and her husband, Kent, have four sons. The family enjoys numerous Colorado activities, especially skiing.

DEAR WOKE BROWN GIRL

BY PRISCA You are eternal. You are neither here nor there, but everywhere. You carry the hood in your veins and academia in your heart. You have not forgotten where you come from, but have learned and earned your way into spaces not meant for you. Spaces that are uninviting to your kind. You are poderosa like that. Your vocabulary is vast and your wit is sharp. You are unstoppable.

You feel everything and feel nothing. You carry loads of pain for the displacement you’ve felt due to your need to question everything. But have had to accept living that confused and living that awake because once you’ve heard your chains rattle, you cannot unhear them.

You do this for you, but you also do this for your mami and your papi and your little hermanita who does not seem to understand herself outside the boxes that our cultura has placed her in.

You belong to no one but are accountable to many. La Raza depends on you. Do not let anyone else tell you differently. You complicate respectability politics and you do not give a f*** that you are doing it. Do you, woke brown girl. You have a fire that is burning inside of you, and that comes from your mother's side. You are going places that no one in your family has ever been and you are fearful of your fearlessness.

Your laugh carries liberation in it. Men try to pin you down, have tried to claim you, but you have resisted because you are not meant to belong to anyone. You belong entirely to yourself. No one can hold that much glitter in their hands. Glitter is messy and overpowering and beautiful. Woke brown girl, you are remarkable.

Your parents brag about your brilliance all while exhorting you to be more like their friend’s daughters, who have husbands and children. But it is because you are groundbreaking, that they do not know what to do with their woke brown girl. They have not been able to hold your fire for some time now, but it is okay because it is your turn to hold them in your heart and in your mind as you dismantle oppressive structures that have kept your parents down. But not you, woke brown girl, so you owe it to them to keep fighting.

That day you stood up in class, and demanded, yes YOU made demands of your white male professor, on that day you recalled your ancestors who resisted and defied all odds by surviving and thriving and continuing.

Remember them. Remember us.

Woke brown girl, do not let them take away your passion. And boy will they try, without any compassion, to keep you down. But remember that without passion you will extinguish, and if for some reason you do and you might, there will be other woke brown girls to pick you and light you up again.

Latinas LEAD is an initiative of the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado. It was created to catalyze the power of community and philanthropy to strengthen the leadership development process of Latinas so that they can drive social change.

Latinas LEAD will catalyze the philanthropic nature of Latinas who value identity, culture and giving back to their communities. We provide grants that fund leadership projects or programs, provide scholarship opportunities to attend local or national leadership trainings, cultivate networking and mentorship opportunities and host the annual Power Summit.

We believe that the leadership mindset begins early and requires all of us putting in our best efforts to connect girls and women to resources, opportunities and leadership pathways so that we can use our skills, talents and voice to positively impact the community.
