Latino Force: Engaging Communities for Change

speakers Aaron A. Abeyta is a professor of English at Adams State University and Mayor of his hometown of Antonito, Colorado. He is the author of four collections of poetry and one novel. For his book, Colcha, Abeyta received an American Book Award and the Colorado Book Award. In addition, his novel, Rise, Do Not be Afraid, was a finalist for the 2007 Colorado Book Award and El Premio Aztlan. Mr. Abeyta was awarded a Colorado Council on the Arts Fellowship for poetry and he was recently named the Poet Laureate of Colorado’s Western Slope by the Karen Chamberlain Poetry Festival.

Angell Perez serves as Executive Director for Circles of Change Colorado, an organization dedicated to creating a pathway for youth to discover sacred relationships with self, family and community to reduce juvenile violence and incarceration. Angell has vast experience providing diversity, inclusiveness, racial equity training and technical support to a variety of nonprofit organizations, private businesses and government agencies. Areas of expertise include providing trainings that build knowledge, develop skills and shift organizational culture within an equity framework that focuses on shared power.

Carlos Martinez is the executive director of the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado, an initiative of Rose Community Foundation. In this position, he directs efforts to expand philanthropy by Latinos, supports nonprofit organizations serving the Latino community in Colorado through grantmaking and oversees special projects. Throughout his 26 years of nonprofit work, he has held various executive director positions and led the transformation of several social service and arts organizations in Colorado, California and Massachusetts.

Cheryl D. Lovell, who holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Florida State University, was selected to serve as Interim President of Adams State University on July 1, 2018. Herself a low-income, first-generation college student, she brings a keen understanding and passion for Adams State's mission to provide access and opportunity to all students, regardless of ZIP code or economic status. She is fond of talking about the "mobility bump" that occurs for students who come from impoverished and historically underrepresented backgrounds to campuses of higher education and how a college degree helps move people up the economic ladder and creates social mobility within their lives.

Cody Trujillo is currently serving as Student Trustee at Adams State University while pursuing his Bachelor in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. During his time at Adams State University, Cody discovered his passion for student advocacy. After serving his first year as a Business Senator and second year as Vice President of Finance for the Associated Students and Faculty, he realized that the Student Trustee position was a perfect fit for him.

Garland Yates has been a champion of equal rights and justice for all people for 30 years. He has dedicated most of his professional career to helping poor and working people build the capacity and power to make positive change in their communities and for the betterment of all people. He is well known for his work in local communities to improve the well-being of residents and the communities by helping poor and working people build the power and capacity to combat poverty, racial bigotry, economic inequality and political indifference. Throughout his career he has worked to strengthen relationships between residents, key institutions and government to work together to solve community problems.

Janina E. Fariñas, Ph.D., L.C.P., is currently serving as La Cocina Clinical Director, and Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University. Trained as a pediatric neuropsychologist and a couples and family therapist, Dr. Fariñas’ areas of clinical and research expertise include very early and early childhood stress, toxic stress, adversity and trauma, Infant Mental Health, Latinx Psychology, Latinx Family Studies, Latinx health equity and community mental health. For the past 11 years, Dr. Fariñas has dedicated herself to the development of trauma informed programs benefiting families, women and children/infants.

Monique Johnson is a silver linings person: She chooses authenticity and laughter whenever possible. Also a true change agent, Monique creates connections and works towards health equity where it matters most—in local communities across Colorado. Monique started at the Coloroado Health Foundation in September 2017. This is her first foray into philanthropy after working in housing and community/economic development with the City and County of Denver for 11 years.

Michele Terese Trujillo was born and raised in the San Luis Valley. She has been working as a professional educator for the past 19 years and currently serves as the director of the Antonito Homeschool Consortium under the nonprofit organization Conejos Clean Water. Michele is concerned with social and environmental justice issues of the rural communities in the Valley and how these inequities impact education for students is her primary focus. Michele presents nationally and internationally on educational topics and has publications that focus on the educational implications for culturally and linguistically diverse students in rural schools.

Through grantmaking, special projects and initiatives, we help build the organizational capacities of Latino-led and -serving organizations so they can achieve their missions. Our investments are responsive, relevant and shape the long-term impact of organizations.
