LATINO AGE WAVE COLORADO Latino Age Wave Colorado (LAWC) raises awareness about the unique needs in serving Latino older adults and their families so they thrive in community. A place-based, community driven program, LAWC recognizes and celebrates the family as a key asset for Latino older adults through a Family Centered Approach to Aging.
The Family Centered Approach to Aging promotes access to care and caregiving within the interconnectedness of family and community. Its purpose is to establish an active and effective system of community resources and related policies that meet the needs of families caring for older adults in Latino communities. LAWC collaborates with community leaders and serves as an intermediary connecting the Montbello community of Denver, Colorado with a care network and policy makers.
HIGHLIGHTS Latno Age Wave Colorado's place based initiative has cultivated community leaders who assist in organizing and curating events, gatherings and educational opportunities for Latino older adults. Each month, the community gathers for LoterĂa (Mexican Bingo), a cafecito or socializing time, a crafting group and a general community meeting. In addition, service providers have used these opportunities to offer health screenings and social outings. They have also started a community garden and hold an annual picnic.

FROM RESEARCH TO ACTION The Rose Community Foundation and Hispanics in Philanthropy laid the ground work of this initiative by investing in research around Latino aging specifically. The initiative has evolved into a robust focus area that includes older adults and community members in a more democratic way.
