Being a leader in the Latino community is about more than attending a fundraiser or giving generously when emergencies arise.

A Thought Leader is one who listens, educates and brings together diverse and varied members of the Latino community in order to, ultimately, harness our human capital. Only then can we influence policy and decision-making on large scale issues critical to all Colorado Latinos.

The Latino Community Foundation of Colorado’s annual Telling Our Story Forum is a full day thought leadership event, bringing together civically minded Latinos, scholars, government officials, artists and Coloradans. The 2017 forum featured speakers who challenged the status quo and encouraged our community to think differently; to connect, to act and to address systemic and social disparities that often prevent Latinos from participating in the democratic process. Nationally syndicated columnist Ruben Navarrette Jr., the most widely read Latino columnist in the country, gave one of 2017’s most moving and challenging speeches at this year’s event—a highlight of 2017 and a benchmark for success as we grow our forum in 2018.

Responding quickly to growing needs in community, the Colorado Immigrant Funders Collaborative (CIFC), distributed $252,000 to over 30 front line organizations last year. These nonproďŹ ts are combating the fear and uncertainty in our community through Know Your Rights trainings, legal services, mental health services and dozens of other direct services. Community response plans are being created alongside churches, schools and police departments and as demand grows so do our programs.

We know even more is needed for 2018, and will continue to invest heavily in our immigrant communities thanks to generous donor support.

Through the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado’s eight community impact programs, thousands of Latinos, from young women in the the Latinas Lead program to college-bound Latinos through our Hip to College Summer Melt, were supported.

Four quarters are worth just as much as a dollar, and 100 people donating $10 small bills is the same as one person writing a check for $1000. All who donate can be philanthropists and generosity at any level is why the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado was able to support community members across the state with over $1,000,000 in grants, direct community support and other programs in 2017.

Cambio para el Cambio (Change for Change), launched in 2015, is a grassroots campaign that educates Latinos on philanthropy while investing in their community. For the past three years, families, friends, and co-workers have come together to creatively decorate piggy banks, consider questions as a collective, donate regularly and pass the money along to a cause close to their hearts. The ultimate result has been thousands in donations from new funders and new generations of philanthropists who have already amassed a history of giving.

STEWARDSHIP Dear Friends, 2017 was a challenging year for our community. Immigrants were attacked head on, our collective humanity was disparaged and abrupt shifts in federal policies threatened the monumental progress we have fought so hard for. But in the year of the 10th anniversary of the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado, we rose to meet the new and evolving challenges. And we will continue to do so in 2018.

In 2017, we provided a record $1,009,500 in direct funding to the Latino community. We did so through partnerships with dozens of direct service providers throughout the state whose health, education, civic engagement, workforce/career development and arts and culture programs supported a diverse cross-section of community members. We welcomed new philanthropists into the fold and we hosted thought leaders who inspired us to think collectively and embrace ideas outside the box.

For 2018, we will move forward with an eye on being nimble and flexible—with a willingness to meet our community members where they are at. After 10 years of growing roots in Colorado, we will be evolving in 2018, fully transforming into our own independent organization and better serving long term partner organizations. Our staff will spend time in cities throughout Colorado in order to best determine how to meet growing and evolving community needs with partners such as the San Luis Valley Resource Center in Alamosa, the Association of Youth United in Action in Roaring Fork Valley and One Morgan in Fort Morgan. And thanks to the continued generosity of our diverse family of philanthropists— donors, community members, organizational leaders, local and national foundations and businesses—we will be able to expand our reach and impact in 2018 and better serve the Latino community at large.

Our year of progress is outlined in these pages, and we can’t wait to show you what we have in store for 2018.

We know that in order to address current obstacles facing our communities and to meet the new ones on the horizon, we must always make it our first priority to listen to the vibrant cross-section of Latino Coloradans and create spaces for our diverse community to communicate with each other.

Telling Our Story Forum

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT The Latino Community Foundation of Colorado promises to be a good steward of all Latino Coloradans. We do so by serving as a vehicle for the kind of change that centers community support and individual connections above all else. We take seriously the responsibility our donors give us when they trust us with their investments, and we promise to always make thoughtful decisions based on the communal values we agree upon. Every investment we make, whether with a partner organization or an individual, will be intentional, accessible and a response to a specific communityderived need.

PHILANTHROPY The Latino Community Foundation of Colorado (LCFC) promises to value our family of philanthropists at every turn. We are building a new generation of donors by cultivating donations of any kind, in any amount, from any and every supporter of the Latino community of Colorado. GIVE Latino families have always given generously. We have a rich history of financially supporting our churches, schools, families and community activities at large. However, despite how deeply giving and community commitment are embedded in our culture, Latinos have not always been recognized as philanthropists.

The Latino Community Foundation of Colorado’s Generations of Giving campaign harnesses the historic ways in which we have given and formalizes this generosity into a new campaign that encourages more Latinos to engage in formal philanthropy thereby strengthening our individual and communal legacies. This new campaign expands the work of the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado by generating $150,000 a year from 100 individuals, families and donors.

While donating $1000, $5000, or $10000 is out of reach for many individuals, Generations of Giving encourages Latino families to come together to support the community by combining gifts. For instance, for the Garcia family, a $1000 annual gift for three years may seem out of reach. But if multiple family members contribute just a few dollars each, adding up to $83 per month, everyone in the family can create a lasting impact and building a Latino legacy for future generations.
