Civic Innovation:
Weaving Identities to Strengthen Our Communities
Program & Journal
Dear Forum Participants, Welcome to the 2016 Telling Our Story forum “Civic Innovation: Weaving identities to strengthen our communities.” The title of the forum, “telling our story” reflects the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado’s philosophy that we are and should be in charge of telling our own stories. Our stories come from diverse cultural perspectives as the Latino community is not monolithic but a reflection of our numerous political, historical, and indigenous legacies. This year’s topic, civic innovation, is perhaps the best example of the reasons why we should be in charge of our own story especially in light of the current political rhetoric. As Latinos, we understand how we can be both diverse and yet reflect a united understanding of a community consciousness that values family, responsibility and respect. Civic innovation is an example of our contributions as a Latino community to the great community around us. Laws, policies and political activism that benefit the Latino community improve the lives of all people in our communities. We have a deep history of civic innovation ranging from social movements to local school policy activism. Our engagement does not begin or end at the ballot box. Our civic engagement includes people who we support in having a voice regardless of whether they are excluded or included from the traditional democratic processes. Consequently, political candidates spend valuable resources trying to understand us in an effort to gain our vote and share our power. This year’s forum provides you with an opportunity to deeply reflect on civic engagement using traditional and nontraditional approaches. We welcome you as thought leaders dedicated to community contributions and change for the greater good. We invite you to sit back, allow yourself to absorb knowledge from local and national community leaders, contemplate the ways you use your voice in civic engagement and consider your own innovations. As we move forward as a recognizable political force we have learned to exercise our power in national and local policies, laws and politics. Thank you for being a part of “our story.” We hope that your experience with us today propels you into new and exciting ways to re-think civic engagement. Sincerely, Board of Directors Latino Community Foundation of Colorado

Cambio para el Cambio Change for Change Campaign The LCFC with support from Citywide Banks has launched a three-year grassroots philanthropic campaign to educate Latinos on philanthropy and to promote philanthropic engagement. The campaign’s goal is to distribute 5,000 piggy banks over the next three years, each generating an average of $50. Over three years this would translate to $250,000 going back into the community to help address community needs.

Look for grant applications on our website in October 2016. Colorado Latino Age Wave is an initiative supporting the well-being of a rapidly growing Latino older adult population in Metro Denver through innovative services and programs. Latinas LEAD is an initiative that catalyzes the power of philanthropy to strengthen the leadership pipeline for Latinas in Colorado. Key strategies include investing through grants or scholarships, providing innovative training opportunities and connecting Latinas with others in their field of interest. About Latinas LEAD: Colorado is home to approximately 500,000 Latinas. Latina leadership has the opportunity to change the leadership landscape to reflect a democracy that includes our values, beliefs and voice as woman leaders. Understanding this potential, Latinas LEAD was created to catalyze the power of community and philanthropy to strengthen the leadership pipeline of Latinas so that they can drive social change. Building on the work of LatinasRepresent Colorado, Latinas LEAD expands participation to include greater leadership interest as voiced by Latinas. Together we will catalyze the philanthropic nature of Latinas who value culture, identity and giving back to our communities. Key strategies: • Investing - Latinas LEAD will fund leadership projects or programs through grantmaking and scholarships. • Training – We will provide scholarship opportunities for local or national leadership trainings and host learning exchanges such as the annual Power Summit. • Connecting – Latinas LEAD will develop a philanthropic community of Latina investors who strengthen the leadership pipeline through their giving. Latinas LEAD will also cultivate networking and mentorship opportunities. Annually, we will bring together the Latinas LEAD community for a full day conference designed to create a shared learning environment to highlight the unique strengths, challenges and opportunities that Latina women face as they establish their personal and professional development.
