According to Miguel, his film photography captures the beauty of the land, and the world we share. He then scans the film to illustrate people of color into the photograph. These illustrated people are drawn like a memory of a person. Almost incomplete, but yielding enough detail to be a resemblance of someone By combining film photography with digital illustration, Miguel is combining the two mediums to represent living among two cultures. Balancing the existence between two languages, social norms, and at times a Miguel’s photography journey began in the 1980s by learning from his father. His father was a street photographer, portrait artist and collaborated with painters to create Chicano art. As Miguel would accompany his father to photoshoots on the west side of San Antonio and watch his father develop print in a small darkroom in the back of a garage, they would experiment with different techniques. “The camera is a same principle as an enlarger All you need is time and light ” , stated Miguel By concentrating on darkroom skills for two years, Miguel was able to grasp the concept of exposing film quickly He started to experiment with his father’s old formulas in the garage darkroom He started to show and sell his artwork in the early 90s to eventually have his own community darkroom and gallery by the late 90s. Miguel then pursued editorial and branding photography for small businesses. When Miguel moved to Spokane, Washington he was immersed in community of art and culture inequities. Miguel learned about the people and stepped up to be a voice for artists of color. In doing so, Miguel was ale to bring his Chicano art, Mexican artists, and diversity to local galleries that didn’t typically show these styles of art. Activism and building creative economy in eastern Washington was a challenge however, Miguel made allies that supported a similar vision. He became an art commissioner for the city of Spokane, a board member with Art Administrators of Color, joined the board of Spokane Ensemble Theater, and eventually President of the Hispanic Business Professional Association. Pandemic put a hold to art as the world quarantined in early 2020. Fueled by his passion, Miguel created LTNX artes as an online gallery to continue to show and sell art Not just for himself but free to other creative in need of working full time as artists. LTNX artes housed galleries for various visual artists across the US and Mexico. As pandemic settled and galleries began to open again, Miguel joined the oldest art gallery in Spokane, WA

After serving the creative community of Washington state and connecting with other artists of color across the country, Miguel has returned to San Antonio, TX He currently sells his artwork exclusively with the Guadalupe Cultural Art Center Bookstore, and works as a branding photographer for local small businesses in the San Antonio and hill country area.

“Of my eight uncles, five spent time in and out of prison,” he shared, “My grandfather died from cirrhosis of the liver, and my father died at 57 from alcoholism. Everyone I knew would drink and take drugs each week. If you didn’t do it, you were the odd one out. So even after the judge let me off, I was still up to no good, until one night … "

The night was October 18, 2005 Fernando was at home watching a Spurs game alone. His table was littered with beer cans, cigarettes and drugs A feeling struck him – the realization that he’d been squandering the second chance he’d been gifted more than a year before. It was a moment that changed his life forever.

“As I’m sitting watching the game, I just started crying,” he revealed. “Not just a tear, but floods of tears I didn’t know why I was crying the Spurs were winning! But I quickly realized it was my inner soul that was crying out for help.”

“Right then I took all my stuff off the table –the beer, cigarettes and drugs, and flushed it all down the toilet. I knelt and prayed. I said ‘God, you’ve got to help me out of this I’m tired. I don’t want to live like this anymore.’ I haven’t touched alcohol, drugs or cigarettes since that day.”

Two months later, Mora had another epiphany. He felt a calling to go back to school. It was at the University of the Incarnate Word that Mora found the program and support he needed to completely alter the course of his path a nd begin living his life in the service of others.

Beginning his higher education journey at 35 years old, Fernando set a goal to earn his bachelor’s degree before age 40. He enrolled in classes each spring, summer and fall while working full -time at an orthopedic surgery center

“We helped the children, and now I want to help the senior citizens in the Southside too,” he explained about the purpose of the Milagritos branch. “I’ve been in medical sales for over 30 years and noticed that many senior citizens in our area go without medical braces; for their back, knee, wrist and ankle.”

Mora pointed to two reasons for this unfortunate reality. One, the medical braces are too expensive. Two, many of the senior citizens in need in the areadon’t have medical insurance. So, Mora got to work.

“I reached out to some business contacts in the medical industry, told them about my plan, and asked if they could help,” he said “I thought they might send a few hundred braces at most they sent 7,000! It’s been an amazing ride so far I’m so excited to see where this journey takes us next.”

Today, Mora has been clean and sober for nearly 18 years. A proud two -time graduate of the University of the Incarnate Word, he ha s gone on to use his BBA and MBA to help improve the quality of life of others. In addition to his non -profit organization, Mora founded two small businesses in the medical sales industry. He looks back on that fateful night when the Spurs played the Laker s nearly 20 years ago with gratitude.

“Everyone has their stories,” he reflected. “But for me, it’s how you react to your story. I want my story to show perseverance Because no matter where you’re from, no matter your past, if you think about what you gen uinely want and go after it with your heart, you can do anything.”

"Jerry Garcia: Breaking Barriers in Latino Comedy"

In the vibrant world of Latino comedy, Jerry Garcia stands as a testament to passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of laughter. Coming off of his HBO special, we delve into his journey, starting with a candid interview that sheds light on the roots of his comedic career.

Garcia's comedic odyssey began in 2009, a pivotal year when he, at the age of 29, decided to confront an early midlife crisis by embracing his lifelong humor-infused identity. His comedic prowess was evident even in his high school years, where he earned the coveted title of "funniest" in the yearbook. However, it wasn't until his late twenties that the stage became his calling.

The North Hollywood Ha Ha Comedy Club served as the backdrop for Garcia's comedic debut, a five-minute stint that he vividly recalls as both awkward and uncomfortable

The $5 entry fee granted him a mere five minutes on stage, and while his performance may have been far from flawless, Garcia discovered a sense of belonging that fueled his determination to pursue comedy further.

What sets Garcia apart is his natural presence on stage, treating the audience as if they were his closest friends or even his parents. Despite the initial awkwardness and discomfort, he felt a sense of belonging that transcended the momentary challenges of his debut

As our conversation delves into the influence of Latino comedians, Garcia openly acknowledges the impact of George Lopez. Lopez's success served as a motivating force, proving that comedians from the Hispanic community could thrive on the big stage. Seeing someone relatable, with brown skin, dark hair, and an unfiltered, sweaty authenticity, inspired Garcia to believe that he, too, could make his mark in the world of comedy

25

However, Garcia reflects on the broader landscape of Latino comedians, noting that while many perform in small clubs across different towns, the leap to mainstream success is often a daunting challenge. The prevalence of talent in local scenes contrasts with the scarcity of individuals who manage to break into the mainstream comedy industry

Garcia emphasizes the importance of encouragement and support for aspiring comedians within the Hispanic community. He acknowledges the difficulties many face in pursuing their dreams, particularly when doors don't readily open. The comedian has become a beacon of inspiration, not only through his performances but also by actively providing advice and support to those who reach out to him.

In various towns, including San Antonio, Garcia has taken it upon himself to encourage emerging comedians to embrace their unique voices. His commitment to being a positive force in the Hispanic comedy scene is evident as he travels to different spots, offering advice and support to those who share his passion for making people laugh.

As Jerry Garcia continues to make strides in his career, he stands as a symbol of resilience and representation within the Latino comedy landscape. Through his journey, he not only entertains but also opens doors for others, proving that laughter knows no boundaries when fueled by authenticity and shared experiences

Jerry Garcia, not to be confused with the late Grateful Dead guitarist, is a rising star in the world of comedy. Hailing from a background rich in Latino culture, Garcia shares his unique brand of humor that resonates with audiences across diverse landscapes. Recently, he shared insights into his journey, ambitions, and the joy of bringing laughter to people worldwide.

26

Reflecting on his own comedic evolution, Garcia acknowledged the familiar presence of a funny individual at family gatherings and events. He drew parallels to his own realization at the age of 29, recognizing his comedic inclination and deciding to pursue it wholeheartedly

Garcia has already made waves with a Latino HBO special and appearances on platforms like Netflix As he delves into new projects, including Lopez versus Lopez on Peacock NBC, he expressed a desire to venture into acting, commercials, and independent films. This shift aims to deepen the understanding of Garcia's persona beyond the stage.

The discussion touched on the difference between performing live and acting for the camera. Garcia finds comfort in the spontaneity of live performances, where he can be himself. However, he is exploring the world of acting, appreciating the creative process that comes with scripts and on-camera work.

Addressing his aspirations for the next five years, Garcia shared plans to be more active in acting while continuing to deliver laughter on stage. He emphasized the importance of being genuine and relatable, traits that have endeared him to his audience.

When asked about dream venues, Garcia expressed a love for theaters and stadiums, citing the unparalleled experience of connecting with large audiences While he acknowledged the practicality of performing wherever the job takes him, his comfort zone lies in the southern and western parts of the U.S., particularly Texas, the Midwest, and California.

Garcia's passion for performing in areas with a strong Latino presence is evident, but he also spoke about the thrill of performing in unexpected places. From the snowy landscape of Edmonton, Canada, to his humor resonating with a diverse audience, Garcia embraces the challenge of bringing laughter to all corners of the globe.

As the interview concluded, Garcia expressed gratitude for the support he receives and looked forward to continued growth, particularly in top markets His journey is one of cultural connection, laughter, and a commitment to authenticity, making Jerry Garcia a rising star to watch in the world of comedy.

ClassicCarsandtheHeartbeatoftheLatinoCommunity

Classic cars, with their timeless designs and powerful engines, have long been cherished by automotive enthusiasts worldwide. Within the Latino community, these vintage vehicles hold a special place, embodying a rich cultural tapestry that weaves together history, tradition, and a deep passion for automobiles. This article explores the profound relationship between classic cars and the Latino community, delving into the cultural significance, communal bonding, and the preservation of heritage through these iconic vehicles.

Classic cars serve as cultural artifacts, reflecting the values and identity of the Latino community. Many Latinos take pride in showcasing vehicles that span decades, from the sleek lines of the 1950s Chevrolets to the muscle cars of the 1970s. These classic cars often act as a canvas for artistic expression, with vibrant paint jobs, intricate detailing, and custom modifications that pay homage to the diverse Latin American heritage.

For many, owning a classic car is a way of connecting with ancestral roots. Vintage automobiles from Latin American countries, such as the iconic VW Beetle from Mexico or the Chevrolet Chevelle from Argentina, evoke nostalgia and a sense of continuity between past and present generations. In this way, classic cars become vessels for cultural preservation and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Latino community.

Classic car culture is not just about the vehicles themselves but also the tightknit communities that form around them. Car clubs and gatherings provide opportunities for Latinos to come together, share stories, and celebrate their shared love for these iconic machines. These events often feature car shows, parades, and cruise nights where classic car owners proudly display their meticulously maintained vehicles.

40

The sense of camaraderie among classic car enthusiasts in the Latino community extends beyond a shared appreciation for automobiles. It becomes a platform for building friendships, mentoring relationships, and supporting one another in the preservation and restoration of these automotive treasures. In doing so, classic car culture strengthens the social fabric of the Latino community, fostering a sense of belonging and unity.

Classic cars serve as living relics, preserving not only automotive history but also the cultural heritage of the Latino community. Many classic car owners take great care to maintain the originality of their vehicles or restore them to their former glory, paying homage to the craftsmanship and design of a bygone era.

These meticulously preserved classics often become a family legacy, passed down from one generation to the next. The act of restoration is not just a technical endeavor but a shared family experience, creating lasting memories and reinforcing cultural values. Through the preservation of classic cars, the Latino community ensures that its automotive heritage remains vibrant and relevant for future generations.

Classic cars are more than just modes of transportation; they are cultural symbols that bridge the past and present within the Latino community. From the streets of East Los Angeles to the neighborhoods of Miami, classic car culture resonates deeply, echoing the stories, traditions, and shared experiences of a diverse and dynamic community. As classic cars continue to roar down the boulevards, they carry with them the heartbeat of the Latino community, a rhythmic pulse that connects generations and celebrates the enduring spirit of passion, pride, and perseverance.
