In a world where perseverance, love, and determination are tested daily, the Bernal family's wall story stands as a shining beacon of resilience as their educational journey was put to a halt in becoming responsible parents This is not just a tale of personal triumphs but a chronicle of breaking cycles, setting examples, and building a lasting legacy.
At 18, Pete Bernal married Michelle, who was 19 at the time. They started their journey together right out of school, becoming parents to their son, Ryan Anthony Bernal. Working various jobs and living in a small duplex on the west side of town, he remembers the days when $4 25 an hour was minimum wage, and $6 00 an hour was considered good pay Today, flipping burgers can earn you $12 to $16 an hour Despite their ups and downs, they persevered together, embodying the spirit of Generation X doing it on their own and making it work.
Before Pete joined the military, he worked to make ends meet while Michelle pursued an associate's degree in Early Childhood Development and worked full-time for Parent Child Incorporated. Her dedication saw her rise from being a teacher's aide at PCI to the director of several centers She managed this while also being a mother to their children, Ryan and Chris.
Witnessing the struggles Pete faced in many jobs with bad insurance, low pay, and disrespectful bosses and having their second son, Christopher Michael Bernal, he was determined to break this cycle for his children. He joined the military to secure a better future for his family Initially in the US Army Reserve, it later became a full-time job due to 9/11. He remembers the day he told his oldest son as he was leaving on the bus for basic training, "I'm doing this for you so you can have a better life. With this sacrifice, you won’t have to, and you'll be able to go to school." Little did he know, it was literally the truth
Ryan faced numerous challenges, particularly as a minority in a prestigious university. During his sophomore year, he wanted to quit, questioning why he should finish if his mom hadn’t Michelle, agreeing with him, struck a deal: she would go back to school and race him to graduation. Leveraging tuition benefits by applying for scholarships and seeking aid through military wife benefits before Hazelwood benefits kicked in, Michelle beat Ryan to her first degree, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor's in December 2016 in General Business from Texas A&M San Antonio She soon opened doors and moved up to Purchasing Coordinator positions at SWISD, TAMUSA, and UTSA, and is now at UT. Following this, Ryan completed his degree in Finance and Business Management from Trinity in 2017 and earned his MBA from UIW in 2018. A month later, he married his college sweetheart, who also graduated with him from Trinity, and soon thereafter, they had a son. He is now the Financial Planning & Analysis Manager for the NBA Spurs/Spur Entertainment
During this time, Pete grappled with his disabilities but refused to give up Chris, their second-born, was on his way to graduate and follow in his brother’s footsteps in playing college football on a scholarship but had to put up his cleats to become a dad right out of high school, like Pete. This created an opportunity for them to get closer and let Chris know he was about to embark on the role of being called Daddy. This was a mission for the whole family to support Chris in breaking his cycle. Determined to help him in any way to cross the stage again, they encouraged Chris to find his passion. He discovered it in firefighting, earning certifications and a Bachelor's in May 2021 in Fire Science from Texas A&M San Antonio, breaking the cycle while taking care of his daughter. He currently serves as a first responder for multiple fire departments and married his high school sweetheart, who also received her degree a year and a half later and is currently a high school teacher Southwest ISD.
Joshua, their youngest, pursued an associate's degree through the CAST STEM early college high school program Pete and Joshua graduated simultaneously with the same associate's in Logistics Management at Palo Alto in 2022 He was the first high school student to do this Joshua graduated 5th in his class, received multiple scholarships, and opted to attend UT Austin
Pete later transferred to his wife’s and son Chris's alma mater, TAMUSA Taking a couple of classes at a time, knowing his multiple learning disabilities like dyslexia, ADHD, PTSD, and anxiety, was a struggle, but with the support of his wife and family and now having three grandkids, he had to do it for them Two years later, he graduated with two degrees with honors cum laude for both a BAAS in General Business and a BA in Marketing On the same day, he had the immense pleasure of supporting his wife as she took a couple of classes here and there and crossed the same stage with her master’s degree from TAMUSA as they both graduated as the Class of 2024
Their journey continues with Joshua set to graduate in May 2025 from the Red McCombs School of Business at UT Austin, where he will also pursue his master’s degree As for Pete, he is determined to seek a master’s degree as well, though he doesn’t know where yet Even though his parents didn’t witness this moment, he knows they would be proud. The Bernals are breaking the cycle, building a legacy, and ensuring a brighter future for their family
In the Bernal household, education, perseverance, and love form the bedrock of their legacy Michelle said, “We changed the narrative from what our own parents told us, ‘I was not able to go to school because of you,’ to ‘I finished school because of you ’” They completed their educational journey for their children and grandchildren As they continue to support each other and strive for greatness for their grandchildren, they hope their story inspires others to chase their dreams and break their own cycles
When you're up against a trouble, Meet it squarely, face to face; Lift your chin and set your shoulders, Plant your feet and take a brace. When it's vain to try to dodge it, Do the best that you can do; You may fail, but you may conquer, See it through!
Black may be the clouds about you And your future may seemgrim, But don't let your nerve desert you; Keep yourself in fighting trim. If the worst is bound to happen, Spite of all that you can do, Running fromit will not save you, See it through!
Even hope may seembut futile, When with troubles you're beset, But remember you are facing Just what other men have met. You may fail, but fall still fighting; Don't give up, whate'er you do; Eyes front, head high to the finish. See it through!
King of the South” is a new series that is being filmed and directed by this month's spotlight... Carmona. The series will take place in Mexico and Texas and it is starting to create a positive buzz. This Texas boy grew up in the small town of Diboll, TX, playing sports for the aptly named mascot, the Lumberjacks.
"King of the South," directed by Carmona, is generating buzz as it films in Mexico and Texas This month's spotlight is on Carmona, whose journey from a small-town boy in Diboll, TX, to a promising filmmaker highlights his dedication to changing the narrative for Latinos in the film industry
Growing up in Diboll, Carmona was your typical small-town boy, deeply involved in sports, playing for the aptly named mascot, the Lumberjacks His childhood was filled with the usual smalltown activities, hitting the gridiron, and making his hometown proud with his accomplishments However, a pivotal change occurred in 1980-81 when his mother remarried, bringing a new stepfather into his life who was in the radio business This new father figure traveled through South Texas towns like Alice and Robstown, exposing young Carmona to the burgeoning world of Tejano music
At the time, another entertainment phenomenon was taking the country by storm Championship Wrestling For a young Carmona, the chance to meet wrestlers and watch them perform was a dream come true However, witnessing the wrestlers' camaraderie backstage shattered the illusion of their on-stage rivalries This experience was a significant turning point, as it made him question the nature of entertainment and what was real versus what was performed
The disillusionment with wrestling led Carmona to seek new interests A transformative moment came when he was introduced to Prince's music by his babysitter. Captivated by the artist's innovative style, Carmona bought his first record, "Purple Rain," and delved into the world of music and lyrics Despite being only ten years old, he was profoundly inspired by Prince's adult themes, which sparked his interest in poetry and writing
In junior high and high school, Carmona's talent for writing was noticed by his English teacher, Mr. Howard, who encouraged him to try out for theater. Initially reluctant, Carmona eventually auditioned and discovered a new passion The experience of being on stage, the communal respect for the performance, and the thrill of live theater captivated him. Despite facing skepticism from his peers, who saw him primarily as an athlete, Carmona persisted and earned their respect
Carmona's journey in theater was not without its challenges. As one of the few Hispanic students in his drama class, he faced subtle racism and exclusion. Encouraged by his teacher, Ms Cordell, he and his friend Yesenia auditioned for the U I L competition, despite knowing they were unlikely to be chosen When the inevitable rejection came, it was a harsh lesson in the biases that still existed.
Undeterred, Carmona decided to write his own play
Borrowing an electric typewriter from the library, he crafted a script overnight and presented it to Ms. Cordell. Impressed by his work, she agreed to let him stage the play if he could find an actress Though Yesenia, disheartened by their previous experience, refused, Carmona found support in Karen, the school's best actress. The play was a success, earning acclaim from his peers and community and sparking suggestions that he should pursue a career in California
At 17, Carmona moved to San Jose, California, chasing the dream of a career in entertainment However, the early 90s in San Jose proved challenging, with high violence and limited opportunities After two years, he returned to Texas, moving to Austin, where he hoped to find better prospects
In Austin, Carmona landed a role in Robert Rodriguez's film "El Machete," credited as Mojado #3 While the experience was valuable, he soon noticed a troubling pattern he was being typecast in stereotypical roles as narcos, sicarios, and drug addicts Frustrated by the industry's limited view of Latino actors, he decided to return to East Texas and create his own opportunities
Back in Texas, Carmona founded Nac Film Theory, a film group dedicated to creating diverse and multidimensional content Inspired by his experiences and the desire to portray Latinos authentically, he set a goal of producing one film a month His first major project, "Caballero," explored the story of his ered
Despite the initial excitement, Carmona faced setbacks His series was not picked up by the El Rey Network, leading to a nine-year hiatus from filmmaking During this time, he continued to write, reflecting on his experiences and planning his next move
After a lengthy break, Carmona's passion for filmmaking was reignited by a former collaborator, Albi Sibani Together, they produced several short films, including "Rite of Passage," "La Piñata," and "Skate Days " These projects culminated in "Lava Platos," which introduced the "King of the South" character and was selected for the South Texas International Film Festival
The success of "Lava Platos" led to plans for a spinoff series, "King of the South " With support from Tejano icon Little Joe, Carmona aimed to create a series that portrayed Latino culture authentically and positively However, conflicts with a producer over creative control forced him to reassess his approach
Undeterred by setbacks, Carmona continued to push forward, determined to tell his stories his way. He began filming "King of the South," overcoming challenges such as actors dropping out last minute. His commitment to the project and his ability to adapt on the fly exemplified his resilience and creativity.
Carmona's vision for "King of the South" goes beyond traditional filmmaking. He sees it as a "Film Ministry," a platform to give young Latino actors opportunities to break free from stereotypes and explore complex roles. Inspired by foreign films, he strives to bring substance and authenticity to his work, challenging the Hollywood status quo.
Moving to San Antonio revealed a wealth of talent and creativity in the local community
Carmona was inspired by the city's actors, artists, musicians, and poets, and he aimed to elevate their work through his films. Casting for "King of the South" brought together a mix of established and emerging talents, creating a dynamic and diverse ensemble
Carmona's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of community support. He emphasizes the need for Latinos to support each other and recognize their collective power By doing so, they can create meaningful change in the entertainment industry and beyond,
As he continues to work on "King of the South" and other projects, Carmona remains focused on his mission to portray Latino culture with depth and authenticity His story is a powerful reminder that with determination and creativity, it is possible to overcome obstacles and make a lasting impact
Carmona's path from a small-town athlete to a groundbreaking filmmaker highlights his unwavering commitment to challenging stereotypes and uplifting Latino voices. "King of the South" is not just a series; it's a movement towards greater representation and cultural authenticity in cinema. Carmona truly embodies the spirit of the "King of the South "

In the world of independent film, wearing many hats isn't just a necessity it's a way of life. My journey into the entertainment world began in elementary school when my mom took me to a variety show one evening. I was in awe. Even though I was only in the second grade and too young to participate, I couldn't wait for my turn. The next year, I eagerly joined and continued to be a part of it for the next three years. This was the beginning of my love affair with entertainment
Middle school was a different story. My first year was challenging, but music was my solace. I joined the band and learned to play the trombone. Before that, in fourth grade, I had my first musical experience with the piano, although circumstances led me to abandon it. Nevertheless, the band became a cornerstone of my middle school experience. Then came a turning point in seventh grade when my friend Carlos introduced me to the Speech Team.
Intrigued, I joined and chose to recite "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allan Poe. My efforts paid off when I won first place in my division and received top marks for my trombone solo These successes boosted my confidence as I moved on to high school.
High school at Fox Tech was where I truly began to spread my wings. I immersed myself in marching band, jazz band, orchestra, drama, broadcasting, speech, French club, and the academic decathlon team. These diverse experiences were preparing me for my future in ways I didn't yet understand.
Though I didn't finish college, I entered the workforce to support my family. My longest tenure was with a global hotel chain, working various roles for 13 years, including a memorable stint at a resort hotel in Indian Wells, California This period of my life brought me back to California, where my journey had started, and it felt like coming full circle. My passion for film led me to a TV and film tech school in Huntington, California. I lived in Long Beach and balanced school with working as a server and participating in independent films My work included gripping for various projects, including a Nollywood film and Vietnamese music videos. I even worked on a short film with Q'orianka Kilcher, known for her role in "A New World," though it never took off That's the unpredictable nature of show business
Despite the challenges, I scored a background role in "Parks and Recreation," which was a significant milestone. Yet, the ups and downs of Hollywood wore me down. After helping produce a friend's short film, I felt my hope in Hollywood fading. I found solace in volunteering for the NAACP Beverly Hills Chapter Theater Awards and the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, organized by Edward James Olmos. Returning to San Antonio felt like destiny. Many others who had ventured to Hollywood were also coming back, and local projects began to thrive My friend Greg Anderson and I created the short film "Surreal," and later, a series of short plays that received great feedback. One of these plays, "The Rosary," turned into a full-length production that toured various venues, including the Tobin Performing Arts Theater
Post-"Rosary," I continued acting in different projects, including "American Crime," "The Leftovers," and "Kevin Probably Saves the World." I also had roles in short films like "Age of Origins" and "Believe "
With an undying passion for change and a relentless drive, our journey in the independent film world continues, inspiring others to pursue their dreams and make a difference in the entertainment landscape.
My passion for acting never waned, even as the pandemic forced us to adapt Social media, especially TikTok, became an outlet for creativity during these times. My journey led me to become a legal videographer, but I continued to pursue my passion for film and acting. Recently, I was honored with an Allstar Texas Filmmakers recognition, a testament to the hard work and dedication I've poured into my craft
Now, I stand on the brink of new adventures. My short film "TIME," my first directorial debut, is in postproduction. I am also reviving my sitcom, now titled "This is la Vida," and looking forward to showcasing my acting skills on screen again
It's time to change the narrative in entertainment. As Lin-Manuel Miranda said, "If you don’t like what you see in entertainment, then be the change." We have the talent, the writers, and the passion to make it happen As Latinos, Chicanos, and Mexican-Americans, we have the opportunity to elevate our game and show the world what we can do. I have the passion for change.
Let’s gooooo!

The consequences of a weakened immune system are far-reaching and alarming. We become more susceptible to illnesses like the common cold, flu, and other infections. Moreover, chronic stress can increase the risk of developing autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis.
Fortunately, there are steps we can take to mitigate the effects of stress on our immune system:
Mindfulness and Meditation : Regular mindfulness practices have been shown to reduce stress and boost immune function. Meditation and or prayer helps but anything that helps you relax and flow with life, improves sleep will help you lessen stress. Sleep is the rest and restore function to allow our immune system to work more effectively and lower the damage of cortisol.
Exercise : Regular physical activity can help regulates tress hormones and improve immune function. Start slow and find something you enjoy and just be consistent. Social Connection : Building and maintaining strong social connections can help reduce stress and support immune function. If approved by your practitioner, use supplements for adrenal gland function and cortisol stabilization.
Increased Vitamin D levels: I recommend levels of 60-100 depending on your disease state. Again, please check with your practitioner.
Gut health through a good gut supplement regimen and a good probiotic but again seek approval from your practitioner.
Stress, though inevitable, doesn't have to be a silent saboteur of our immune system. By acknowledging the connection between stress and immune function, we can take proactive steps to manage stress and fortify our body’s defenses. Let us prioritize our well-being and take control of our health – our immune system will thank us.

In the spirit of Independence Day, I thought I would take some time to talk about independent providers and pharmacies and how their unique place in the market offer a lot more advantages than you may initially think. Don’t get me wrong. Big companies have their advantages. They usually have multiple locations, convenient hours, and predictable service levels. For the average consumer, with relatively normal needs, they are a perfectly good option. But what if you are not the average consumer? Most large companies have policies and procedures in place that don’t allow for the level of customized service that an independent provider may be able to offer For any independent provider, innovation and personalization is the cornerstone of success
Take pharmacy for example. The large chain stores enter into contracts with specific wholesalers. This helps them negotiate volume discounts for many medications. But an independent pharmacy can shop multiple wholesalers This means they have more options to shop for better prices or to source hard-to-find medications.
This also means that patients can usually get a better price for medications at an independent pharmacy, especially if they do not have or do not want to use a prescription drug plan to pay for their medication For generic medications, independent pharmacies can often beat insurance copays, especially if you buy 6 months or more of medication at a time.
In addition, independent pharmacies can usually offer all of the services of larger chains like phone applications, automated refills, delivery, and so on
The difference is that they can offer these services with a much more personalized touch. For example – you get stuck working late and can’t be home to receive your delivery. Not much of a problem for most independents. But if you have ever tried to re- route a delivery from UPS or FedEx, you know what a challenge changing the delivery address could be
Smaller practices also allow for more accessibility of the pharmacist and other pharmacy staff. This leads to more open communication for patients and allows everyone to have a vested interest and genuine concern about your health Much better than a rushed conversation while waiting in between other work demands. Independence from large corporate management structures and buying teams also means freedom to offer innovative services. This can be diagnostic tests, immunizations, health and wellness items, or even educational classes
If you and your community have a health care need, many times an independent pharmacy will have the flexibility to help with the problem, or at least get you pointed in the right direction.
A final great reason to choose any independent provider is the fact that they are part of the same community – which gives them an incredible incentive to be attentive to everyone’s needs. Plus, the money you pay them will be much more likely to stay in the community. When we help each other everyone wins.

How I went from a career in healthcare to becoming an advocate for better understanding money and using entrepreneurship to help clients reach their goals. This article delves into the connection between understanding money and empowering yourself to takeaction.
It's always a wonderful opportunity and honor to serve my community I'm Rico McPherson and I came to San Antonio in 2012 but I am a native Houstonian. After completing 20 years of military service, I started working as a leader in the health insurance industry. As many in this city know, life after the military can be tough and it was no different for me. I honestly just sought comfort working somewhere medically related that I wouldn't stand out too much coming from a military way of life. I knew that working up the corporate ladder was something that everyone does and I thought I was ready to do it again.
But for some reason, spending the majority of my time in a cubicle just wasn't working for me anymore I needed more freedom an flexibility to control things in my professional and private life. If you have ever looked back at what you were doing and thought, "what else could I do that I'll actually enjoy doing while making more of an impact?," then you would understand why I had to jump into the entrepreneurial waters. One of the first things I tried to do to earn income outside of a job was working as a life insurance agent and an Airbnb host. I worked in life insurance because I wanted to help prepare families for all money-related challenges and I did hosting because of the semi-
passive income in the hospitality field Through working with clients, I noticed that the lack of financial awareness was a major cause of poor money decisions that cost them a heavy price later in life. My experiences led me to search for a better way to connect within the community and do my part to help prevent this; that's when I founded WayMaker Services. Why WayMaker, you ask? Because I got tired of seeing the same negative cycle with money repeat itself from generation to generation in my family and locally. It also donned on me that the same cycle existed in people's entrepreneurial journey.
Here's the thing, appearances aren't always the real deal, and there are so many people that need help with understanding money but are just too embarrassed to say anything. Business owners are not the exception to this. Unfortunately, the subject of money remains taboo in families and kids aren’t learning enough to be efficient with money throughout early adulthood Instead, the common practice is to study and work hard enough so they can get a nice paying job and presumably “afford” to buy more stuff. By the time most young adults attain a “real” job, they are often burdened by a continuous debt cycle and a salary that doesn’t keep pace with the cost of living. Additionally, a common reason why people don’t pursue additional opportunities to earn income outside of work is because they weren’t taught how.
I’m definitely not against working a regular job but I also believe in working strategically so that you can put more of your hard earned dollars to work for you I have seen far too many cases of individuals working well past retirement simply because they couldn’t afford not to;
I’ve also seen people commit everything to their employer and end up having to start over again. This is were additional sources income and investments some into play but I will get deeper into that in a future article. Before I explored the world of entrepreneurship, I also fully embraced the hussle culture during the Pandemic and earned a chest full of skills along the way that greatly helped me in business. My experiences supported the concept that it’s not about your education but it’s your skills that help you do more than pay the bills.
I'm basically a business consultant with a financial wellness coaching twist! I can help you with everything from money basics and planning to mastering how to use LinkedIn for your career and business. I don't tell my clients that I am going to solve all their financial problems, but when we work together starting the conversation at the mindset level, they start to understand that great things will come if they continue to take baby steps. I help business and individual clients look at where they want to go, set milestones, and then I equip them for success.
Times can be hard for a lot of families out here but evening the playing field starts with everything you do outside of your job; your house is truly where growth needs to be accelerated. It’s the perfect mix of technology advances and a bit of a culture shift going on in the workplace that provides the greatest opportunities I have relied on a lot of nontraditional training to create different opportunities for growth Of course, this type of outlook invite many skeptics! I invite everyone to take the time to find things that you can do to solve problems and develop systems around that. Some have business all twisted, because it’s not about doing things you don’t like doing but it is about solving more problems effectively.
My passion for financial education goes beyond typical thinking, because I believe that money, business, and health are all connected. If I can just get more people to think a bit differently about preparation for the future, then I can impact generations, and that's why I offer free financial training programs - online and in person - to empower people to take charge of their money
So, if you're looking for some help with a money concern in your business or your personal life, reach out for a free consultation. You might just find that you have more power to change your situation than you realized.

Origins and Cultural Significance Pozole is another cherished Mexican soup, deeply rooted in the country’s preColumbian history Traditionally made for celebrations and significant events, Pozole (from the Nahuatl word pozolli) was a ceremonial dish among the Aztecs. Today, it remains a festive dish often served during Christmas, New Year, and other special occasions. Ingredients and Preparation Pozole comes in three primary varieties based on the color of the broth: red (rojo), green (verde), and white (blanco). The fundamental ingredients include:
Pork (sometimes chicken)
Hominy
Broth made from red or green chilies, or a clear broth for the blanco version
Aromatics like garlic, onion, and Mexican oregano
The meat is cooked until tender, and the hominy is simmered until it absorbs the flavors of the broth Pozole is typically garnished with a variety of fresh toppings, such as shredded cabbage, radishes, lime wedges, avocado, and tostadas
Taste and Texture Pozole offers a delightful harmony of flavors and textures The hominy is plump and slightly chewy, complementing the tender meat The broth, whether it’s the earthy red, tangy green, or simple white, is rich and savory The fresh garnishes add a burst of color, crunch, and brightness, making every spoonful a vibrant experience
While both Menudo and Poole are hearty, hominy-based soups, they cater to different palates and occasions.
Protein Source: Menudo features beef tripe, giving it a distinctive texture and flavor, whereas Pozole traditionally uses pork or chicken, making it more universally approachable.
Broth: Menudo’s broth is red and richly spiced, while Pozole can have a red, green, or white broth, each offering a unique flavor profile.
Cultural Role: Menudo is often considered a comfort food and a hangover remedy, enjoyed casually or during weekend gatherings Pozole, on the other hand, is more commonly associated with celebrations and festive occasions
Menudo and Pozole, though similar in some respects, each bring their own unique characteristics to the table Menudo’s rich, tripe-based broth and hearty texture contrast with Pozole’s versatile flavor profiles and festive nature. Whether you’re looking for a weekend comfort food or a celebratory dish, both soups offer a delicious way to experience the depth and diversity of Mexican cuisine. So next time you find yourself craving a taste of Mexico, why not try both and decide for yourself which one wins the culinary showdown?
