EVER LOYAL BE ADRIANO

de

SOUZA

HEAD COACH Seventh Season Head coach Adriano de Souza enters his seventh season at the helm of the Louisiana Tech Volleyball program after guiding the Lady Techsters to win improvements in five of his first six seasons in Ruston. De Souza has been a catalyst for developing consistent improvement in his players both on and off the court. His ability to recruit and strengthen student-athletes has shown itself in each of his first six seasons at LA Tech. Most recently, senior Marta Monne was named second team Conference USA and first team all-Louisiana under the guidance of de Souza. The all-conference accolades in 2017 were the first for the program since 2014 when Rebecca Redgen was also named Second Team All-C-USA. De Souza has also placed a strong emphasis on crafting the program's non-conference schedule, making it more competitive year in and year out. Just as importantly, de Souza has preached the importance of excelling in the classroom as well as the court. In July of 2018, the Lady Techsters received the AVCA Team Academic Award for the first time in program history. In 2017, senior Jacie McClure became the first LA Tech volleyball player to earn Academic All-America accolades in program history. She was just the 15th student-athlete in Tech history to earn such honors. In 2016, de Souza improved on the previous seasons' record for the fifth consecutive season, becoming the first coach in Louisiana Tech history to achieve that feat through his first five seasons. He also steered the Lady Techsters to their highest win total (13 wins) since the 2010 season. LA Tech put together a respectable mark against some formidable conference opponents and at one point secured three straight league triumphs; a feat that had not been achieved since 1999. The Techsters also notched their first win over C-USA powerhouse UTSA since 1991. The victory marked the program's first triumph over a top-70 RPI team (63). De Souza's prowess for promoting excellence on and off the court was on display in 2016. RS Junior Marta Monne was named first team all-Louisiana, becoming the first Techster since 2010 to achieve that feat. Senior libero Alejandra Aviles etched her name in the school record books after setting the program record for career digs. The previous record of 1,477 set by Jamie Shanks had stood for 20 years. De Souza also preached success in the classroom as junior Jacie McClure earned Conference USA allacademic recognition for the second straight season. McClure maintained a 4.00 GPA as a kinesiology and health promotion major. In 2015, the Brazilian native guided LA Tech to a 10-20 overall record, the team's best finish since 2011, and a 3-13 mark in Conference USA play. The Lady Techsters recorded the most wins in conference action since the 2009 season with victories over Rice, UAB and Charlotte. Five Lady Techsters were named to the 2015-16 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, while junior Jacie McClure was selected to the 2015 C-USA All-Academic Team for her academic and athletic excellence throughout the season. De Souza also coached a pair of student-athletes that etched their names in the LA Tech record books in 2015 as senior setter Adria Morales and junior libero Alejandra Aviles each excelled on the court during the campaign. Morales surpassed a career milestone in her final game for the Lady Techsters

10

2018 LADY TECHSTER VOLLEYBALL

after she notched her 1,000th career assist -a feat she accomplished in just two seasons in Ruston. As for Aviles, the libero continues to move up the ranks in LA Tech history after she ended the 2015 campaign with 464 digs, which moved her into fourth place in program history for most digs in a single season.

Following the 2014 season, the Lady Techsters placed a student-athlete on an all-conference squad for the first time since 2009 with senior Rebecca Redgen being named Second Team All-Conference USA after ranking fifth in C-USA in both kills and points. Redgen also led all Lady Techsters in kills (381), kills per set (3.74) and points (419.5). De Souza entered the 2013 season with a rebuilt roster and plenty to prove as a team as LA Tech was a first-year member of Conference USA. The Lady Techsters put together a 7-22 record with a 1-13 mark in league play, while de Souza led his team to a handful of impressive feats in 2013 with a plethora of underclassmen on the roster and just one senior. For the first time since 2010, Louisiana Tech defeated a conference opponent as the Lady Techsters prevailed against Conference USA foe Charlotte, 3-1, on Oct. 4, 2013 in Charlotte, a victory that also marked LA Tech's inaugural win as a member of C-USA in any sport. Also in 2013, former Lady Techster, Stephany Salas, played professionally for Gigantes de Carolina in Puerto Rico. Salas also played under de Souza in his first season as head coach for the Lady Techsters, where she ranked fifth in the Western Athletic Conference in digs per set with 3.88 in 60 sets played in league matches as a senior. The libero finished her two-year career at LA Tech as the all-time leader in digs per set in a career with 4.13. In early 2012, Louisiana Tech announced the hiring of de Souza, a longtime Division I assistant coach, from Illinois State as the ninth head coach in Lady Techster volleyball history. In his inaugural season at Louisiana Tech, de Souza's squad compiled a 3-27 record. De Souza, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has brought a wealth of both collegiate and international coaching experience to Ruston, as well as recruiting ties in both the U.S. and overseas. De Souza arrived at LA Tech with a coaching resume spanning 22 years and boasts stints at the club, high school and collegiate levels, including assistant coaching positions at Illinois State, Miami (OH) and Kent State over the course of his career. Before coming to Louisiana Tech, de Souza spent the past four years as an assistant volleyball coach at Illinois State where he helped rebuild the Redbirds program, leading it to the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament two straight years. Prior to his time in Normal, Illinois, de Souza furthered his reputation by serving on the staff at Miami (OH) for three seasons from 2005-07 where he was instrumental in revamping the program's training and scouting systems while helping the RedHawks reach the 2007 NCAA Tournament after capturing the Mid-American Conference Tournament title that season, and reaching an RPI as high as 46 that year. Two of Miami's wins that season came against nationally-ranked Ohio, the four-time defending conference champion. The only other team in the country to sweep the Ohio Bobcats in 2007 was national runner-up Stanford. In de Souza's first season at Miami in 2005, the RedHawks recorded the most wins (17) since the 1998 Mid-American Conference championship team that went 27-8 that year. In 2006, Miami finished fourth in the MAC regular-season race, the

He also volunteered as an assistant coach with the boys' volleyball team at Stow (Ohio) High School in 2004, and as the head coach of the Club Q Sport 17's team in 2004-05. Prior to de Souza's time in Ohio, his coaching career in the U.S. started with two years as the head women's volleyball coach at Union College while he took postgraduate courses. In his first head coaching stint in the USA, de Souza led the Bulldogs to a second-place finish in the Mid-South Conference and the program's first NAIA regional appearance in his final season in Kentucky (2002). De Souza, originally from Brazil, a country with a great volleyball history and tradition, began playing the sport at the age of 14. He spent three years (2001-03) as the volleyball coach and co-administrator for two men's teams in the city of Rio Claro, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. His under-21 men's team was the regional runner-up all three years, while his under-19 men's team was the APV League Champion in 2001, and posted a runner-up finish in 2002. In 1999, de Souza mentored the under-21, under-19 and under-16 women's programs at Club Regatas in Campinas, Brazil, before coming to the U.S. to begin his Division I coaching career. He also served a three-year stint as the head men's volleyball coach at the State University of Campinas (1995-97), where his team won sectional championships in 1996 and 1997, finished second at the Metropolitan Championships in 1995 and 1996, and placed third in 1997. From 2001 to 2007, de Souza worked with Antonio Rizola, the head coach of the Brazilian Junior National Team, in developing methods to improve players' game intelligence in preparation for South American and World Championships. In 2007, he volunteered for the Brazilian Youth National Team when it competed at the World Championship in Mexico. While attending his undergraduate courses in Physical Education and Sports Coaching, De Souza had the chance to be a liaison and interpreter for the U.S. Women's National Team (1994) and Japanese National Junior Team (1993) in their respective visits to world championships in Brazil. De Souza has co-authored books and articles on sports and coaching. He has also presented at the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) Conference in Vancouver, Canada (2008), Loughborough, England (2012) and most recently in Cologne, Germany (2016). He graduated with his bachelor's degree from Universidade Estadual de Campinas in Sao Paulo, Brazil in December 1997, and completed his master's degree at Kent State in May 2006.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

2013-Present: Assistant Coach, Louisiana Tech Former Louisiana Tech volleyball player Gabryel Ording enters her sixth season as an assistant coach on the LA Tech coaching staff after rejoining the Lady Techsters in 2013. “Ording has been instrumental in reenergizing our recruiting plan and outreach,” head coach Adriano de Souza said. “Her understanding of what our university can offer both academically and as a volleyball program has been very valuable in the process of reaching out to prospective student-athletes.” Over the past three seasons at Louisiana Tech, Ording has helped manufacture a revival of the Louisiana Tech volleyball program serving both as an assistant coach and a recruiting coordinator. When Ording joined the volleyball program in 2013, the Lady Techsters were coming off of a three-win season and have improved in total wins in every year since. In 2015, Ording helped guide Louisiana Tech to more conference wins than in the previous four seasons combined. Improved success has not just come on the court but in the classroom. Following the 2015 season, five Lady Techsters were named to the Conference USA Commissioners Academic Honor Roll and one, Jacie McClure, was selected to the 2015 Conference USA All-Academic Team.

PLAYING EXPERIENCE 2009-2012: Louisiana Tech

“Ording has a great sports mind,” de Souza continued. “She has a very intelligent way of coaching our players and her approach has helped to significantly improve their game performance.” Ording completed her senior season and earned her bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech in kinesiology in November 2012 and a master’s degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Sports Performance in 2015. Over the course of her time at Louisiana Tech, Ording lettered all four years and was also the volleyball program representative in the SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee). “While a student-athlete at Louisiana Tech, Ording was not only always prepared for all the practices and matches she competed in, but she was also a leader who contributed to the organization and development of the program on and off the court and she has continued to do this as an assistant coach,” added de Souza.

Croucher comes to Ruston after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach at the University of Saint Mary. In her final season at the program last year, she helped guide the program to the most victories in school history (18). While coaching at Saint Mary, Croucher provided assistance at practices, helped with player development, compiled scouting reports and game strategy, recruiting, fundraising, and developed a strength and conditioning program. “We are very excited to welcome Jessica to Louisiana Tech,” de Souza noted. “Jessica comes to our program after bringing success to the University of Saint Mary program during her time as an assistant there. Since the beginning of her interview process, I felt she would bring very positive volleyball knowledge and coaching to our program.” Prior to coaching, Croucher was a four-year starter on the volleyball team at Delaware State from 2010-14. Upon graduation, she obtained her undergraduate degree with a Bachelor of Arts in physical education, with a minor in coaching management. Most recently, while at Saint Mary, she earned her master’s degree in sports administration.

CONFERENCE USA 9 1 8 1 0 20

Conference USA begins its 24th year in 2018-19 as it continues to compete and promote the success of its student-athletes. The league has adapted to the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics over nearly a quarter of a century, but the commitment to excellence, integrity, leadership and its studentathletes in competition, academics and community is unwavering. Conference USA enjoys a far-reaching fan base with its 14 members: Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP, UTSA and WKU. Debuting in 1995, Conference USA teams have combined for 109 bowl appearances in football, 108 NCAA Tournament appearances in basketball, including three Final Fours, 71 NCAA baseball appearances including six College World Series berths, 93 NCAA

soccer tournament appearances including four trips to the College Cup, and 39 individual national champions in track and field and cross country. Success is not limited to athletic achievement, however, as 231 Conference USA student-athletes have garnered Academic All-America honors, 775 have achieved academic all-district laurels and thousands of student-athletes have earned a college degree. Conference USA sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 10 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball). The league promotes the scholar-athlete ideal, honoring outstanding academic achievement with nu-

merous conference-sponsored awards, including the Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Commissioner’s Academic Medal as well as sport-specific All-Academic teams. C-USA annually awards postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Awards, Scholar-Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. Additionally, Conference USA presents a Spirit of Service Award three times each year, recognizing student-athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom and give back to the community through significant service efforts and participation.

SUCCESS ON THE PLAYING FIELD

Conference USA performers have achieved great success in competition, placing the league among the top conferences in the nation.

Football

• 109 teams have earned bowl bids • Eligible for the College Football Playoff • Conference USA has nine bowl affiliations through the 2019 season, securing a minimum of six berths annually. Conference USA has primary bowl tie-ins with the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl, Bahamas Bowl, Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl, Hawai’i Bowl, New Mexico Bowl, R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, and Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl, along with secondary arrangements with the Frisco Bowl and the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl.

Men’s Basketball

Women’s Basketball

Baseball

In addition to the numerous NCAA Tournament berths, C-USA has sent four men’s soccer teams to the NCAA College Cup, three softball teams to the Women’s College World Series and three volleyball teams to the NCAA Sweet 16. The league has also had 39 national champions in NCAA track and field competition, one national champion in diving, and numerous NCAA individual and team competitors in cross country, golf, swimming, tennis, and track and field. Overall, Conference USA teams and individuals have made more than 2,000 NCAA appearances.

The league’s headquarters were established in Chicago and, after nine years, relocated to the current office in Irving, Texas. Britton Banowsky was named Commissioner in October 2002, succeeding Mike Slive, the league’s first Commissioner. In October 2015, Judy MacLeod became the league’s third Commissioner.

• 131 postseason teams (55 NCAA, 50 NIT, 13 CBI, 11 CIT, 2 LV16) •O ne National Championship title game appearance • Three Final Four teams • Seven Elite Eight NCAA Tournament teams • One NIT Champion and five NIT semifinalists • 2 CBI Champions • One CIT Champion • Inaugural Las Vegas 16 Champion

SUCCESS OFF THE FIELD

C-USA institutions are among the nation’s best in academic performance of student-athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. Among C-USA’s 5,000 student-athletes, there are champions of the playing field as well. In 22 years, more than 33,000 student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll or received the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom.

C-USA IN THE COMMUNITY

The conference’s current footprint is concentrated with 14 members in 10 states and a combined area population of more than 30 million. With a commitment to community involvement, the conference developed several initiatives to maintain strong ties in C-USA cities, as well as with fans and alumni across the country. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations. Individually, student-athletes are recognized each season through the Spirit of Service award.

GOVERNANCE

Conference USA has significant representation in the NCAA governance structure. The presidents of the member institutions serve as the league’s Board of Directors.

A PROUD HISTORY

Conference USA was formed in 1995 and quickly emerged as one of the nation’s top conferences. The conference unveiled its name, logo and commissioner April 24, 1995, in Chicago. The league’s charter members were Charlotte, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, Saint Louis, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and USF. Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while Houston joined competition in the fall of 1996.

• 71 NCAA appearances • Six College World Series appearances (2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2001) • 14 Super Regional appearances • Has produced at least four NCAA teams in 10 of the past 15 seasons

C-USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United States Military Academy (March, 1997) as football members. ECU began league competition in 1997; Army in 1998 and UAB began football play in 1999. The league brought in TCU and ECU (1999) for all sports and they began competition in 2001. USF started C-USA football in 2003. Marshall, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, UCF and UTEP became full-time Conference USA members for all sports in 2005. In 2013, charter member Charlotte returned to CUSA and was joined by new members FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion and UTSA. WKU joined the league on July 1, 2014.

EVER LOYAL BE BIO, Dr. Leslie K. Guice Became 14th president of Louisiana Tech University, July 1, 2013

DR. LES

GUICE

University President @LKGuice

On Nov. 22, 1975, Les Guice, the future president of Louisiana Tech University but at the time a Tech junior architecture major, put a metaphorical but very visible exclamation point on two of his life’s biggest loves. First, he married to Kathy May, now his wife of 43 years, in south Arkansas. Second, the very newly newlyweds immediately headed to Ruston to watch Louisiana Tech’s football team play Arkansas State. In the cold and rain. Tech lost. Les and Kathy didn’t. Several diplomas, three sons and three grandchildren later, they are still going strong and leading their alma mater to new heights. Dr. Guice and Tech share a rich history together that spans five decades and has produced family ties that are deeply rooted in a passion for the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters. From an architecture student stepping on the campus for the first time in 1972 to an appointment as Louisiana Tech’s 14th President in 2013, Guice has shown an unwavering commitment to leadership and service to his alma mater. One of Guice’s first achievements at Tech was earning a bachelor of arts in architecture in 1976. Discovering a passion for engineering under the mentorship of professor Jack Painter, Guice went on to earn a master’s degree in civil engineering from Tech in 1978 and decided to pursue teaching and education as his profession. His dedication to his students, his faculty and the University would lead to his appointment as dean of Tech’s College of Engineering and Science (COES) in 1999. As Dean, Guice continued to encourage and support innovations in the curricula. The College’s faculty became increasingly successful in securing external funding for the integrated curriculum which resulted in a transformative redesign of curricula throughout the College. Guice’s leadership and vision also reinvigorated the Engineering and Science Foundation to more effectively serve the needs of the College. He initiated a new integrated strategic plan, known as “COES 2010,” and capital campaign, “Tech’s BEST,” that led to funding for an Eminent Scholar Chair, 15 Professorships, a $500k Scholarship Fund, and several new laboratories and facilities. With a focus on the future and a progressive vision for economic development, Guice has led the planning and development of the Louisiana Tech Enterprise Campus, a research park connecting the University and downtown Ruston. Enterprise Campus’ first building, Tech Pointe, was completed in 2012 and is now home for several companies and organizations; another building to house emerging companies is already needed. Because of a revitalized relationship between the City of Ruston and the University, and thanks to the Ruston citizens and friends and supporters of Tech, the partnership has resulted in about $300 million in investments, private and public, during the past two years. Much of that growth is due to Tech’s problem-solving, opportunity-seizing president. As president, Guice is the chief executive officer of north Louisiana’s only Carnegie Foundation national research university and one of only two public universities from Louisiana recognized in the top tier of national universities by U.S. News and World Report. Throughout his career, Guice has contributed to and played a central role in creating the culture and vision for the future of Tech; he continues that commitment as president. His focus on campus-wide engagement and building and growing relationships, plus his leadership in forging a path toward advancement of the University’s academic and athletic programs, research and commercialization activities, and economic development efforts means that Louisiana Tech University’s best days are yet to come.

EVER LOYAL BE TOMMY

McCLELLAND Director of Athletics @TMcClelland

Since stepping on campus in July of 2013, the cornerstone of Louisiana Tech Director of Athletics Tommy McClelland’s leadership has been the philosophy of building champions on the playing fields, in the classrooms and in life. While leading Louisiana Tech into the Conference USA era, McClelland impacts the athletics department through fundraising, facility improvements, coaching hires and overall student-athlete development. If the past five years are an indication, McClelland’s philosophy is paying dividends in Ruston. In fact one could argue that since his arrival in Ruston, Louisiana Tech has seen its most impressive five-year run since the 1970s. Over the past five years, the University has seen postseason appearances by football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, golf and track and field. During his time in Ruston, the Louisiana Tech programs have all taken strides forward on the playing fields, highlighted by: Football – the Bulldogs are one of just four teams nationally that have won a bowl game in each of the past four years, joining Clemson, Wisconsin and Utah. Since 2013, Tech has had more players selected in the NFL Draft than any other Conference USA program. Men’s Basketball – the Bulldogs were one of just 13 teams in the nation to record 23-plus wins five straight years (Tech won 17 this past year). Tech won a pair of regular season conference titles during this stretch. Women’s Basketball – Head coach Brooke Stoehr (a former Lady Techster great) led the program to back-to-back Women’s National Invitation Tournament appearances and top four finishes in the C-USA regular season. Baseball – Louisiana Tech has won 35-plus games for three straight seasons, the longest such streak since the 1980s while making its first NCAA Regional appearance in 30 years when the Bulldogs won 40-plus games and reached the Starkville Regional finals in 2016. Softball – the Lady Techsters have recorded four straight 30-plus win seasons for the first time in two decades. Tech won its first Conference USA Tournament title in 2017, earning a spot in the 2017 NCAA Tournament in the Tuscaloosa Regional where it took No. 1 ranked Minnesota to extra innings before falling. Men’s Golf – the 2016 Bulldog golf team shocked everyone in route to capturing the Conference USA team title (its first since 1980) and clinching the program’s first ever appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Victor Lange became the first Bulldog to ever earn three straight strips to the NCAA Regionals. Louisiana Tech was one of only seven FBS schools in the country to have 9-plus football wins, 20-plus MBB wins, 35-plus baseball wins and 35-plus softball wins (one of only two non-Power 5 teams to accomplish it: BYU) during the 2016-17 campaign. That same season Tech also became only the second C-USA program to finish in the top 5 in football, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, baseball, softball and soccer in the same season in league’s history (East Carolina, 2012-13). 2015-16 also saw some impressive achievements. Louisiana Tech joined Florida, Florida State, Ohio State and Ole Miss as the only five Football Bowl Subdivision schools to recorded 9-plus wins in football, 20-plus wins in men’s basketball and 40-plus wins in baseball. It was also one of only 12 FBS programs to play in the postseason in each of those three sports, joining Florida, Connecticut, Florida State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Washington, Duke, Arizona, Utah and Miami (Fla.). Pretty elite company. Off the field, Louisiana Tech student-athletes have blossomed in the classroom as well. During McClelland’s time in Ruston, a total of 726 LA Tech studentathletes have been recognized on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll while another 173 have earned the C-USA Academic Medal, including a record 47 in 2017-18.

Louisiana Tech senior soccer star Katie Sloan was named the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year for Division I Women’s Soccer, becoming the first student-athlete in LA Tech history to receive this prestigious honor. The University has also seen its athletic programs continue to earn high marks in both the NCAA’s annual Academic Progress Report (APR) and Graduation Success Rate, ranking among the state and conference leaders in many of these marks. Perhaps the most tangible sign of McClelland’s impact at Louisiana Tech are in facilities with the addition of the $23-plus million Davison Athletics Complex and the $18-plus million press box and luxury suites at Joe Aillet Stadium. These two new facilities not only changed the landscape of football game-day in Ruston but also produce more than $1.2 million in additional revenue per year for LA Tech Athletics. In addition to the new construction, the department has seen upgrades and renovations to many of its other athletic facilities, such as the addition of the $1.2 million Paul Millsap Vision presented by Community Trust Bank, a high definition video display board in the Thomas Assembly Center. The project also included a customized sound system for the Thomas Assembly Center and a video board control room, utilized for both football and basketball. Louisiana Tech Athletics has also seen record numbers in private giving in each of the last four years, including surpassing $1.6 million in giving to the Louisiana Tech Athletics Club (LTAC) for the first time ever this past year. Tech has also seen record numbers in most LTAC donors in the past three years. During the 2013-14 fiscal year, McClelland spearheaded the efforts in raising more than $10.8 million through both LTAC and Quest for Excellence; more than double any previous year in Tech Athletics history. Included in the record total were five, seven-figure gifts. Louisiana Tech also made the announcement in the fall of 2015 that it partnered with Adidas America, Inc. to establish a transformational 5-year exclusive agreement that outfits all 16 NCAA men’s and women’s programs in Adidas uniforms, apparel, footwear and equipment through the 20202021 athletics season. During his time in Ruston, McClelland has also groomed a pair of newly named athletic directors in Lamar AD Marco Born and Florida Atlantic AD Brian White. Both Born and White served on McClelland’s senior staff during their time in Ruston. Prior to coming to Ruston, McClelland made a national name for himself after quickly elevating to the athletics director position at age 26. He earned high praise from a number of high-profile experienced athletic administrators. “Tommy McClelland is an outstanding leader and one of the nation’s rising stars in intercollegiate athletics,” said Bubba Cunningham, athletics director at the University of North Carolina. “He has a demonstrated commitment to supporting and developing his coaches and student-athletes and has already become well-known among ADs for his leadership, vision and character. Tommy has also shown a dedication to lifelong learning and the application of his skills and talents to making his athletic programs better.”

EVER LOYAL BE Prior to being named athletic director at McNeese State on March 19, 2008, McClelland served as interim athletic director and assistant athletic director of internal affairs at the university. In his time at McNeese, McClelland and his staff had numerous success stories when it came to increased revenue streams and the overall game-day experience in Lake Charles. He raised more than $3 million in private donations, and he was instrumental in increasing corporate sponsorships to nearly $1 million, while securing new clients and multi-year sponsorships. McClelland was also responsible for increasing football season ticket sales: the program eclipsed the 8,000 mark in 2008 with a high of 8,035 in 2009. In addition, he was instrumental in setting single-game attendance records in baseball, volleyball, softball, soccer, women’s basketball and women’s tennis. “Tommy is a rising star in the college athletics administration field and, in my view, the ideal leader to advance Louisiana Tech’s athletics program as it transitions into Conference USA,” said Liberty Athletics Director Ian McCaw. “He possesses impeccable integrity and has an extraordinary work ethic. Moreover, his interpersonal and relational skills are outstanding and will enable him to quickly connect with Bulldog fans as well as campus and community leaders.” One of McClelland’s main goals was to improve the life of the studentathletes and increase the game-day experience for the McNeese State fan base. One of the most effective ways to accomplish these goals was by improving the facilities. During his time at McNeese State, he oversaw a combined total of over $11 million dollars in facility renovation and new construction. The combination of increased revenue streams, renovations and new construction, and a highly-involved fan base led to plenty of success stories on the playing fields. During his tenure as athletic director, McNeese won Southland Conference championships in football (2007, 2009), soccer (2006, tournament; 2007, regular season), softball (2010, tournament; 2013, regular season), men’s basketball (2011, regular season), women’s basketball (2011, regular season; 2011 and 2012 tournament) and men’s cross country (2012). The women’s basketball program made its first appearances ever in the NCAA Tournament, and the men’s basketball program hosted the first round of the NIT postseason tournament (Boston College live on ESPNU). Even more impressive is the fact that while the Cowboy and Cowgirl programs were capturing titles on the fields, the University’s student-athletes were making tremendous strides in the classroom. In five of McClelland’s six years as athletics director, McNeese State led the Southland Conference in the number of student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In addition, McClelland guided the resurgence in APR success in Lake Charles. The number of athletic programs boasting the required APR score of 925 went from four in his first year to all 16 in his final year. The community service hours performed by the MSU student-athletes also tripled to more than 3,000 during his tenure. “Tommy has a great knowledge of college athletics and excels at helping his student-athletes balance and succeed in their commitments to academics and athletics,” said Michigan Athletics Director Warde Manuel. “Tommy has also proven his ability to work effectively with coaches and administrators to help his programs be successful.” McClelland earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State in 2004 and completed his master’s degree in sports administration in 2005. He walked on with the Demons football team and eventually earned a scholarship; he also competed in the javelin for the NSU track and field team. The native of Basile, Louisiana served as a graduate assistant at Northwestern State in athletics and also worked at the Southland Conference office as an administrative intern, assisting with championship events. McClelland is also a 2012 graduate of the Executive Program of the Sports Management Institute and attended instruction at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. McClelland is married to the former Jessica Stokes of Garrison, Texas. They have two sons, Lawson (8) and Grayson (7).
