3114 is a rugged, athletic herd bull prospect that is very complete. He stands squarely on his feet & legs, has more than adequate muscle and rib dimension and has the masculinity of a real breeding bull. He weaned off the cow at 844 pounds, which was 56% of his 4 year old dam’s weight. His sire was a result of arguably the most successful mating in the history of our program and is a full sibling to Columbia and 4112. “River” was an impressive individual that was truly massive and extra powerful.

Here’s a long bodied, deep sided, big nutted, sound made herd bull prospect that weaned off the cow at 836 pounds, which was 58% of his 3 year old dam’s weight. She is a beautiful, moderate framed, easy fleshing, good uddered cow that is typical of our Double Wide daughters. 3154 is double bred to the 4112 cow and it is no surprise that he is a big-bodied beast. His actual WW of 764 was nearly 52% of his 4 year old dam’s weight. A really solid combination of performance with fleshing ability in a sensible frame size.

We have been very grateful this year to have the bulls in our new, much bigger feedlot pens. During this very wet winter (with sunny, picure taking opportunities few and far between), we had much more success keeping them relatively clean and dry. With more space and exercise they have been healthy and active. I am excited to see how these fit, hard bulls perform at their new homes!

Please excuse an unrelated sidebar here, but we want to express how proud we are of Molly! Our oldest will graduate from Warden High School in June and is planning to attend the University of Wyoming (in Laramie) this fall, pursuing a degree in Ag Communications. She will graduate with a 3.9 GPA while challenging herself with online college classes the last two years. She has served as a 4-H Camp counselor, an officer in the National Honor Society and is in her second year as FFA Chapter Vice-President. She has been competitive statewide in livestock judging, potato judging, and prepared public speaking. Molly has won more ribbons, banners and buckles showing steers and pigs than we can count. She ran Cross-Country the last two years, pushing herself to improve consistently, setting a PR in her final race. She plays a key role as a starter and Co-Captain on one of the top-ranked Class 2B Girls basketball teams in Washington that just earned another berth in the state tournament. We are looking forward to watching Molly, Lila and their teammates in Spokane!

I wanted to acknowledge Molly’s exploits and figured lot 20 (her basketball number) would be a good place. Lot 20 needed to be an exceptional bull to share this page and “Senior Captain” certainly is an individual to be proud of! Raised by a very well-constructed, easy fleshing and productive first calf heifer, he weaned at 818 pounds – which was over 66% of her weight! This herd sire prospect is long, level topped, proud and sound. He packs pounds in all the right places with an expansive rib cage, plenty of muscle and a Ribeye ratio of 113. Dan Coonrad managed the WSU Beef Center for 37 years. Jaime and I competed on his Livestock Judging Team and were part of the original Cougar Cattle Feeders group that Dan advised. I worked for Dan, lived at the Beef Center, and was “adopted” by Dan and Karen as one of their “Beef Boys”. I’m honored to be a part of the Beef Boy “fraternity” that includes so many people of prominence in the livestock industry. We learned so many things from Dan – livestock evaluation, EPDs, low-stress cattle handling, forage/range grazing management to name a few. Most impactful for me was the dozens of hours and thousands of miles traveling to judging contests with Dan and learning about the beef and seedstock industry.

The Dan Coonrad Memorial Fund, a 501c3 organization has been established to honor his memory by helping fund and promote the kind of hands-on educational opportunities Dan helped provide for us. Board members include Darren Coonrad, Ian Newman and Jeff & Jaime Sackmann. At our 2023 sale, we raised over $6,000 to get the fund established! This year we will help PNW Collegiate and youth Livestock Judging Teams with travel expenses. If you wish to donate, or have an idea of a team or event that would be a worthy beneficiary of this effort, please contact any of the board members. We pledge 10% of the proceeds from lot 37 to this fund.

3503 is a bull I am confident Dan would have liked. He is moderate framed, sound and complete in his design, with more than adequate muscle through his top and hip. He is deep-bodied from forerib to flank and looks like a producer of easy fleshing, very functional cows.

His dam is a moderate framed Deliver from the Blackbird tribe with an impeccable udder. Scanned the biggest ribeye of this group with a ratio of 123. 3128 is a performance and maternal-oriented Rainfall son with a bit more size and scale. His dam is a beautiful, long-bodied, good uddered cow that I probably shouldn’t have sold in October. She found a great home with Dave DeMulder in Cedarville, CA.

Its always an honor to welcome you to our HERD BUILDER BULL SALE. It has certainly become our main event if you will. This is where you have a large selection of some of the stoutest, some of the toughest, some of the best conditioned bulls available in the Northwest. Our bulls are fed much differently than most of the younger bulls being sold. Right or wrong or indifferent, I like the way these bulls look and act and perform when kicked out to go to work. The only thing that would be any better is to sell them to you straight off long hay. But that isn’t what people are used to seeing so it is simply impractical to attempt.

The JR Ranch bulls have run in one contemporary group since weaning. Started with 236 bulls, narrowed down to 160 after weaning and then down to 95 bulls by the first of June. You are seeing the top cut. Some good bulls fell out because of injury, others go away because they just aren’t assertive enough to succeed in a large contemporary group. I think what survives through to this point is sound and strong enough and smart enough to not always be in the middle of a ruckus. The fighters are the ones that end up injured and gone.

My management of these guys does not give them near enough exposure to people. These bulls don’t all walk up to be scratched whenever you walk out there. They can be untrusting and like to be stand off-ish until we spend a lot of time fiddling with them. I have learned that once you earn their trust, they are quite reasonable, and quite a few even will turn into pretty quiet bulls. I will make an honest disposition sort on them when we video them and they are singled out for the first time in their 21 months of life.

I guess all this dialogue is intended to convince you that these bulls are designed to work hard in big country. I’m sure they would all look great in a nice green, lush pasture with shade trees too. But these guys are born into a working set of cows and raised that way. My goal is to sell you a bull that lasts for 4 or more years and sires more than his fair share of calves. The other thing we strive to do is leave you with a cow that will fit your environment. She is not going to be a frame 6 plus terminal type of cow. Those simply come with too many challenges to overcome in so much of this western range country that it’s not sustainable by any means. These bulls are produced by cows that truly are moderate-framed, 1100–1250-pound registered angus cows. The average registered cow in our trade area does not fit this description. Not even close. So, if you are serious about raising cattle that can thrive on standing forage, are right- sized and sound and fertile, I think you should plan to be with us on March 18th. As many of you know, two longtime friends, customers and great stockmen unsaddled their horses for the final time in 2023. Monte McPeak and Dave Dashiell were as good of stockmen as the Good Lord ever made. Above and beyond that, they were great husbands, fathers, teachers, friends and mentors to so many. The world just seemed to stop for a while when we learned of each of them passing.

The only way it seemed to make any sense is that God was in dire need of two good hands that could take care of a big bunch of cows and a band of sheep. I know that my life was made better because of the example these men set and the time I was fortunate to spend with them. Monte, Dave, thanks for the great example you set, and for the cherished memories we all have of you.
