ANNOUNCING OUR NEW DINING EXPERIENCE FROM FEBRUARY 2025

A LETTER FROM SALLY HUGHES & ADAM ROLSTON

It is our 42nd year of business and what a year it has been already! Our production of CALENDAR GIRLS was a tremendous success, touching hearts and bringing laughter in equal measure. It was followed by the delightfully charming and moving THREE MEN IN A BOAT, and Alan Ayckbourn’s B EDROOM FARCE had audiences roaring with laughter — all shows received rave reviews and packed houses. We couldn’t be more proud of the joy these productions have brought to our audiences.

“THE 2025 SEASON IS SHAPING UP TO BE ONE OF OUR BEST YET, FILLED WITH LAUGHTER, DRAMA, AND UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS.”

Now, as we move into the next chapter of our season, we have the World Premiere of THE WHISTLING, a chilling ghost story that promises to send shivers down your spine. And, of course, our much-anticipated Christmas production of WHITE CHRISTMAS will bring festive cheer and a touch of musical magic to The Mill — with plenty of snow!

Looking ahead to 2025, we’ve got even more in store. We’re excited to announce the arrival of table service in our restaurant, coming this February, just in time for the hilarious Ray Cooney comedy IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY. While this will be a fantastic new addition to your dining experience, don’t worry — we’ll still be serving The Mill’s famous pie and our beloved bread & butter pudding! We know how much our guests look forward to those traditional favourites.

The excitement then continues with DON’T ROCK THE BOAT later in the year, and we’re especially excited for the World Premiere adaption of DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY, P.D. James’ bestselling novel that has captivated audiences both in print and on screen. The 2025 season is shaping up to be one of our best yet, filled with laughter, drama, and unforgettable moments.

As always, our waterside terrace bar remains open all year round, offering delicious afternoon teas, sandwiches, cakes and beverages. And we’re thrilled to see more performances taking place in our bar and restaurant, including a pocket version of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST served with afternoon tea, and directed by the hugely talented Tam Williams!

“WE COULDN’T BE MORE PROUD OF THE JOY OUR PRODUCTIONS HAVE BROUGHT TO OUR AUDIENCES.”

Thank you, as ever, for your unwavering support. The Mill remains the special place it is because of you, our loyal audience. We can’t wait to share more wonderful experiences with you as we embark on another exciting year.

EXCITING UPDATES BRINGING SOMETHING NEW TO THE TABLE

Starting in February 2025, and after 43 years, The Mill’s dinner service style will transition from our usual buffet to modern British à la carte. This change comes as part of our ongoing commitment to elevating your dining experience with us and engaging with our customers’ feedback.

With our new table service, we will be asking guests to pre-order their choices, which will not only allow us to meet our food waste and sustainability targets, but to ensure your food is with you promptly after you are relaxed and settled at your table. There will be no more queueing for your food or carrying your plate to your table. After enjoying a pre-show drink in our Waterwheel bar you will be shown to your table where you will be greeted by our friendly waiting staff, and even some delicious complimentary nibbles to start your meal.

Whilst our new à la carte menu will present a creative selection of modern cuisine using the finest seasonal ingredients, your beloved classics of Steak & Ale Pie and Bread & Butter Pudding won’t be leaving us!

In keeping with industry trends, our new menu will also include a vegan main and dessert, enabling us to cater to dietary needs more efficiently. We believe that this change will enhance your dining experience, and with a complete change to our restaurant furniture we are looking to provide a more intimate and enjoyable atmosphere for our guests.

We invite you to join us in the near future to experience our table service and exceptional food, that will define the next chapter of The Mill’s journey. Look out for more details soon!

DOING OUR PART OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

Here at The Mill, we’re constantly seeking new ways to champion ecological approaches to our day-to-day operations. Our unwavering commitment to sustainability — reducing carbon emissions, and promoting green energy solutions for a brighter, cleaner future — is at the forefront of our operations. We follow the national Theatre Green Book guidelines, for example, 60% of the set for ‘ flooring used in previous productions.

Did you know, our building is now 75% heated using geothermal energy! By harnessing the Earth’s natural heat, we’re significantly reducing our reliance on traditional, fossil fuel-based heating methods. This not only cuts down on carbon emissions but also helps in combating climate change. Geothermal energy is a clean, renewable resource that keeps our spaces warm while promoting long-term sustainability.

provide us with a sustainable power source, but it also allows us to sell surplus electricity back to the national grid, actively contributing to the country’s energy supply.

“DID YOU KNOW 60% OF THE SET FOR ‘THE WHISTLING’ WAS CRAFTED FROM RECYCLED FLOORING USED IN PREVIOUS PRODUCTIONS”

Alongside this, we’re equally proud to be generating clean energy with our hydro-electric syphonic turbine, which first opened in 2005. This ground-breaking turbine was the first ever installed on the River Thames, marking a significant achievement in renewable energy innovation in the UK. Powered entirely by the natural flow of the river’s current, this technology efficiently transforms

Our kitchen is equally eco-conscious, solely powered by a highly efficient and sustainable heat exchanger. By capturing and reusing the heat generated during cooking, we’re able to re-purpose that energy to warm our hot water — drastically improving efficiency.

This process not only reduces the overall energy consumption of the kitchen but also minimises waste, ensuring that no heat goes unused. It’s an innovative approach that allows us to operate more sustainably while maintaining high performance.

We’re proud to contribute to a greener future by utilising this efficient and eco-friendly technology. Every step we take toward sustainability helps protect the environment for future generations.

SPONSORING OUR STAIRCASE BECOME A PART OF THE MILL’S HISTORY

Thank you for your patience as we finalised our new staircase. The space has been thoughtfully designed to showcase a collection of stunning posters from our past shows, creating a visual journey for our guests as they make their way from the Waterwheel Bar to the Restaurant. These posters are more than just a trip down memory lane — they are a celebration of the incredible productions that have graced our stage over the years, each one representing a special moment in The Mill’s history. As you walk up the staircase, we hope these posters evoke fond memories of your visits to us and remind you of the joy, laughter, and unforgettable experiences shared within our walls.

Each poster also serves as a tribute to the generous individuals and organisations who have supported The Mill through sponsorship. We are pleased to announce that half of the posters have already been sponsored by some of our most cherished patrons. However, there are still opportunities available for those who would like to contribute and leave their mark on The Mill. Sponsoring a poster is not only a way to support our ongoing projects but also an opportunity to join an esteemed group of sponsors, including the legendary Dame Judi Dench herself. Imagine seeing your name — or the name of your business — alongside hers, as part of a permanent display that celebrates both the artistic legacy of The Mill and the community of supporters who make our work possible.

The funds raised through poster sponsorship will be directly invested in the refurbishment of our new staircase, ensuring that it remains a beautiful and welcoming feature of The Mill for years to come.

This initiative is part of our broader commitment to preserving the charm and character of our beloved venue while making necessary updates to enhance the experience for all who visit. Your sponsorship will help us achieve these goals and allow us to continue providing a space where great theatre, dining, and cherished memories come together.

Thank you once again for your patience and for being part of The Mill’s story. We look forward to welcoming you back soon and sharing this beautiful new space with you. If you’re interested in sponsoring a poster or learning more about how you can contribute, please don’t hesitate to contact us. “... SIMPLY SPELLBINDING PERFORMANCE...REVEALING AN ABUNDANCE OF LOVE AND AFFECTION BETWEEN ORDINARY PEOPLE CAUGHT IN EXTRAORDINARY TIMES...A THEATRICAL GEM.”

BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE.

FRIDAY 25 APRIL 2025

A romantic, funny and very touching portrait of life during the second World War featuring readings of letters between Oscar-nominated actress Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter) and her explorer and writer husband Peter Fleming (brother of James Bond creator Ian Fleming) posted to India and the Far East during the war working for Military Intelligence.

Not only are the letters highly engaging, but they also provide a fascinating historical insight into that time of true austerity and fearfulness.

The letters are read by their daughter Lucy Fleming (Love Sarah, Miranda in The Archers) and her husband Simon Williams (Upstairs Downstairs, Justin in The Archers, EastEnders,) and give an insight into a young mother’s life coping during the war and tell of Celia Johnson’s experience of filming with Noel Coward, David Lean and her thoughts while making the classic film Brief Encounter in 1945. www.postingletterstothemoon.com

A THANK YOU TO THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES THE MILL TEAM

A huge and heartfelt thank you to the incredible behind-the-scenes team at our theatre, whose dedication, talent, and tireless effort bring each and every performance to life. To the production crew — the stage managers, set designers, lighting and sound technicians, costume and makeup artists — you are the unseen magicians who transform our creative vision into reality. Every flawless set change, perfect spotlight, and stunning costume design is the result of your hard work, creativity, and expertise. Your attention to detail and commitment to excellence elevate each performance in ways the audience may not see but most certainly feel.

“EACH AND EVERY MEMBER OF STAFF AT THE MILL CONTRIBUTES TO THE MAGIC OF THIS THEATRE.”

Our thanks also extend to the amazing administrative team, whose organisational skills and leadership keep the theatre running smoothly day after day. From scheduling and coordinating, to managing budgets and overseeing every logistical detail, your behind-the-scenes work ensures that everything comes together seamlessly. Without you, none of what happens on stage could

be possible. Your dedication allows the rest of us to focus on creating memorable experiences for our audience knowing that everything is handled with precision and care.

We are equally grateful to our front-of-house and box office teams, who create the first impression for every guest. Your warm welcomes, helpfulness, and efficiency set the tone for an enjoyable theatre experience. Whether it’s assisting with ticketing, guiding patrons to their seats, or handling any last-minute issues with grace, you are the face of our theatre. Your commitment to excellent customer service ensures that each visitor feels valued and looked after, contributing significantly to the overall enjoyment of the show.

Last but certainly not least, a special thank you to our restaurant and hospitality team. Your exceptional food and service enhance every visit, making the theatre experience more than just about the performance. From pre-show dinners to post-show drinks, you help create lasting memories for our patrons, adding a touch of warmth and hospitality to every visit. Together, each and every one of you — from production to administration, front of house, box office, and the restaurant team — contributes to the magic of theatre, and we are deeply grateful for everything you do to make it all possible. Thank you!
