Letters 2 Packaging This is how I package for pick up: • I cut my letters.

• Next I cut my design using cardboard as my material. Save the inner bits (ie center of circles, etc.)

• Next I was able to add my letters to the cut cardboard.

• I then “shrink wrapped” my pieces to the cardboard using Walmart brand plastic wrap. (I do not have a shrink wrap machine) • I don’t generally put the words in using spacing or correct order. I make the best use of recycled materials.

The Next Level Laser Conference 2024 in Tulsa, OK, was a spectacular event, gathering industry leaders, innovators, and enthusiasts for three unforgettable days of learning, networking, and inspiration. The conference was a testament to the laser community’s dedication to growth and collaboration, setting the stage for a year of incredible advancements.

The anticipation was palpable as attendees arrived on Thursday, June 27. The registration desks buzzed with excitement, and the vendor room quickly filled with curious participants eager to explore the latest offerings from top companies in the laser industry. The “Ask Us Anything” booths were immediately popular, providing attendees with valuable insights and expert advice.

The opening sessions set a high standard for the rest of the conference. Mark Collier’s talk on “Connections. Confidence. Courage.” was a heartfelt and motivating start. His anecdotes and practical advice resonated deeply, setting a positive tone for the rest of the day. Following him, Emily Caroline captivated the audience with her session on “Keys to a Killer 4th Quarter,” offering strategic tips for maximizing sales during the year’s most crucial period.

Friday night was all about connections, with a mixer that allowed attendees to unwind and network in a relaxed setting with fun food trucks to choose the evening’s fare from. Conversations flowed as easily as the drinks, and the atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and excitement for the days ahead.

Saturday began with an energizing breakfast, setting the stage for another day packed with insights. Gabe Harris kicked off the morning with his session on “Becoming Resilient: Learning How to Bounce Back Stronger,” sharing personal stories and strategies for overcoming chalSeptember/October 2024

In the afternoon, Emily Caroline led an interactive Q&A on fourth-quarter strategies, while Missa Braund-Allen shared her expertise on mobile photography in “Tips for Incredible Phone Photography.” A panel discussion with Kim and Garrett, Callie Goodwin, and Emily Caroline explored “Using Social Media to Find and Build Your Audience,” providing comprehensive insights into audience engagement.

Jessica Trueblood’s session on “KEYS to A Killer Etsy Listing” was

packed with practical tips, and her Q&A session further clarified key points for attendees. LensDigital’s spotlight showcased their innovative rotary designs, attracting significant attention with their engaging presentation.

As the day drew to a close, the vendor room and “Ask Us Anything” booths remained open late, allowing attendees to continue exploring products and seeking advice at their leisure.

Sunday, the final day of the conference, began with a reflective session on “Satisfaction Guaranteed: Keys to Managing Customer Expectations and Making Raving Fans” by Sean Delano.

His practical tips on customer satisfaction were invaluable.

This was followed by a heartfelt panel discussion on “Winning at What Matters Most: Balancing Work, Life, and Family,” featuring MJ Torres, Dawn Marie, Sumita Patel, and Missa Braund-Allen, who shared honest and relatable insights into achieving work-life harmony.

Procreate Myths: s By: Heather Lynn, LoBo Designs

Calling all laser owners! If you’re not using Procreate® to create your laser designs either for products or passive income, you are missing out! Procreate for iPad is nothing short of a digital masterpiece, overflowing with tools and features that make it a powerhouse for creating custom and unique designs. It’s literally an in-your-pocket art studio, with every brush, paint color, texture, and design feature you can imagine, but here’s the scoop — while Procreate is fantastic for designing, it’s not always the final stop for creating laser-ready files. Depending on the end-goal, you may need to take a few extra steps to convert your virtual art into laser-ready SVGs. Stick around as I shatter a few myths and show you how to unlock the full potential of Procreate for your laser-design adventures!

! d e t s u B Myth #1: “I can create SVGs in Procreate.”

Wrong! Remember when I mentioned above that Procreate is a powerhouse for designing? Here’s the twist — Procreate’s superpower is creating gorgeous images in raster format, however, when it comes to SVGs (Scalable Vector Graphics), Procreate takes a backseat. Why? Because Procreate does not export to SVG, it only exports to raster format (PNG, JPG, etc.)... which isn’t necessarily a show-stopper for SVG designing, it’s just step one of two!

SVGs are basically the superhero of the design world because you can resize them smaller or larger, without ever having to worry about reducing the design quality. Procreate, on the other hand, has a raster-based digital can-

vas made of tiny squares called pixels, which can get a bit fuzzy if zoomed in too close. So, while Procreate can seemingly can do it all, if you want a design you’ll be able to be cut on your laser, you will need to team up with a secondary, vector-based design software like Adobe Illustrator, LightBurn, Affinity Designer, etc. or a web service for image tracing/vectorizing.

Myth #2: “Procreate is great for single-line designs.”

Incorrect! I totally get why Procreate might seem like a great fit for creating single-line designs. It’s an amazing tool for detailed, artistic work, but when it comes to vectorizing designs like single-line art — there’s a little snag. Referring back to Myth #1, Procreate is raster-based, so your designs are made up of pixels, not scalable lines. In order to vectorize those pixels, you need to image trace them. This works best if your design is a solid, non-compound shape.

What is a compound shape? To put it simply, it’s a shape within a shape. A non-compound shape would be something like a solid circle or another solid geometric shape. Looking at the screenshot, the circle on the left would image-trace as a single-line solid circle, while the circle on the right would trace as two paths — the outside of the black circular line as one path, and the inside of the black circular line as a second path. This is often the reason you’ll see others mentioning “double lines” when image-tracing.

If you’re focusing on single-line designs, skip Procreate and hop right into a vector-based software like Adobe Illustrator, LightBurn, Affinity Designer, etc. These programs are designed to allow you to create your artwork directly in vector format to avoid the need for image tracing.

Myth #3: “I can’t use Procreate because I can’t draw.”

False! Don’t let the whole “I can’t draw” thing hold you back. Saying you can’t use Procreate because can’t draw is like saying you can’t cook because you don’t know how to grow vegetables. Let me let you in on a little secret... when I started creating designs, I couldn’t draw either — and I still can’t! I just have a whole lot of practice under my belt on how to utilize the tools in Procreate to achieve my design goals.

If you’re anything like me, your ability to draw starts and ends at stick figures, but don’t let that scare you off! You can use Procreate to trace photos just like you’d use a pencil on tracing paper.

This way, you can turn your favorite images into stunning designs without having to sketch them from scratch. It doesn’t have to be people or houses either — this is the trick I used to teach myself how to draw a pumpkin! You just import a photo, lower the opacity, and trace away! Once you have that mastered, you can add faceless portraits, house sketches, pet portraits, and so much more to your portfolio of items you can offer your customers.

And there you have it — three myths busted and one more amazing digital artist coming right up (that’s you, of course). While Procreate may not do everything we need it to do as laser owners, it’s pretty undeniable that it’s a force to be reckoned with, as far as design apps go… and it’s one that we get to carry around with us!

Stand Out at Craft Shows By: Kristine Howard, The Sawdust Makery

Let’s talk about craft show set up for a hot minute as many of us are busy prepping for the Holiday Show Season. I’ve been doing handcrafted shows for 30+ years and have had vendor spaces from 5’x8’ up to 10’x 40’. Over the years, I have tested many different display methods – the good, the bad and the ugly. In this article I will provide some of the best tips to set up your booth, how to get the most out of your space, and how to merchandise your products to draw customers in.

Laying your product flat on a table does not showcase it and risks low visibility with crowds of people walking by. Going vertical improves your visibility as well as giving you more display space for your product.

Vendor spaces can vary in size depending upon the event, from a table space up to a large 10’ X 10’ space. Utilizing the space to draw in customers not only can help with showcasing your product, but also give you the space you need to fill your booth with as much product as you can.

Use displays such as bookshelves, gridwalls with shelves and baskets, or an inexpensive hutch to build your displays up to eye level. If you do need to use a table, build on top of your table with crates and small shelves to get your product up where customers can see what you have. If you sell ornaments, use either an eye-catching lighted Christmas pencil tree or use small boxes on a grid wall to display your ornaments. Freestanding wire basket displays are also a great way to go vertical and showcase similar products at the entrance of your booth or on tabletops.

space, as well as keeping the traffic flow easy for customer accessibility. This can also help you plan for product placement for a more efficient set up time.

Make your space inviting

Brighten up your space with eye-catching lights or spotlights to focalize products. Lights are always inviting and help make your booth more attractive to customers, as well as standing out from other vendors.

As you embark on this season, maximize your space to showcase who you are and your product to draw in customers to make them feel excited about what you have to offer. By implementing the above strategies, you can set yourself up for success and stand out above the crowd.

Make a statement with your booth so people know what you sell by keeping similarly made items in your inventory. If you have a booth filled with t-shirts, wood items, yarn washcloths, tumblers, stickers and food items all intermingled together, will your customer be confused about what you are selling? Making a statement about your products to help your customers know what your business is all about immediately.

A well-stocked booth is always more shop-able and inviting. If your booth is sparse, a customer may walk by and think they have seen everything you have to offer and keep walking by.

You may ask, how much inventory should I bring? My answer is always “bring as much as you can!”. If you have overstock, great!

You can fill in items easily as they sell out.

As items sell out, rearrange and fill the empty spots and don’t be afraid to rearrange your products. Drawing on my many years as a retail merchandiser, most customers only see about 30% of what you have. If they make multiple loops through the event (as many do) they may see something they didn’t see on a previous loop, and you may score a new customer and sale!

And finally, now that you have set up your booth and showcasing your product, have you showcased your business name and who you are? I have found that bringing my cash stand to the front corner of my booth and clearly displaying my business logo and name, helps me connect with customers walking by, as well as make it easy for customers to find me when I have set up and marketed a local event on social media.

So you’ve bought a laser—now what? Whether you’re a hobbyist or a professional, one of the biggest questions you’ll face is, “What should I make?” and “Will it sell?” While in-depth trend and data analysis is beyond the scope of this article, I’ll direct you to resources that can guide you in your journey.

Who am I and why should you listen?

Fair question. I’m a certified data enthusiast with over 15 years in data analytics and intelligence. I’ve assisted companies like Microsoft, GE, and Nissan in answering similar questions. Additionally, as a military intelligence officer, I deal with compara16

ble exercises for the Army (I could tell you more, but... well, you know the rest). Part of being proficient in data analytics is maximizing search efficiency. Just like in any job, using the right tools for data gathering can simplify the process and help you avoid “analysis paralysis.” The goal is to provide you with actionable insights and meaningful information. General Colin Powell was once asked how much intelligence is needed before taking action. His answer was “somewhere between 40% and 70%.” If you have less than 40% certainty, you need more information. If you have more than 70%, you may have waited too long and possibly missed an opportunity.

What to Use and Why You might have already started researching trends without realizing it. If you’ve ever Googled to see what others are doing, you’ve already started analyzing trends. To refine your research, let’s focus on a free tool from Google, Google Trends (https:// trends.google.com/trends). Google Trends tracks and aggregates search data, allowing you to see what people are searching for and where those searches originate. By leveraging trend analysis, you can determine product niches, get ideas for content creation, and more accurately focus your marketing strategies.

How to Use Google Trends There are many detailed tutorials on YouTube, but here’s a straightforward guide to get started: 1. Access Google Trends: Go to trends.google. com/trends.

2. Enter Your Search Term: Type your key term into the search bar. Unlike regular searches that benefit from specificity, trend analysis works best with basic terms initially. Let the trend results guide more detailed searches.

3. Adjust Parameters: • Time Frame: Adjust the search period from a few hours to several years to discern if something is a passing fad or a strong trend.

• Location: Limit results to specific cities or view global trends. If you’re participating in an event or craft show, focus on trends in that area.

• Category: Filter results by categories like sports, news, travel, and more.

• Search Type: Choose between web searches, image searches, news, and Google Shopping. Generally, web searches will be most relevant.

4. Analyze Results: Review results graphically over time, examine regional interest with heat maps, and see ranked lists of related search terms. You can also compare terms to explore their relationships.

So What?

The goal is to capitalize on emerging trends rather than reacting after they’ve peaked. For instance, searching for “custom gifts” and “Stanley tumbler” might reveal a rising trend closer to the holidays.

This might seem intuitive, but confirming it with data is crucial. Interestingly enough, a related search for “Hello Kitty Stanley Tumbler,” shows a 3,100% increase over the past year, predominantly in California and Arizona. This insight enables you to target your marketing efforts effectively in those regions.

Fortune 500 companies have entire departments dedicated to identifying market trends and matching products to anticipated demand, so don’t get overwhelmed. Start with the intersection of what you CAN do, what you ENJOY doing, and what is in DEMAND. This will keep your confidence high when trying to break out of your comfort zone or if you feel like you don’t know where to start. Most importantly, get started by getting started.

Start exploring Google Trends today to uncover the latest trends and gain valuable market intelligence. By leveraging these tools, you can make informed decisions, target your efforts effectively, and stay ahead of the competition.

So instead of Etsy tips this issue, let’s discuss some mindset tips to keep those vibes high and that creative mojo flowing. Etsy traffic is always up and down, and while this year has been especially weird due to various factors, things have a way of always bouncing back on Etsy.

Did you know that Etsy releases financials each quarter? You can view them here. Overall, Etsy reported revenue losses (like many companies), but the CEO had encouraging things to say about the platform and the future.

In the meantime, let’s talk about mindset! Mindset refers to the set of beliefs, attitudes, and perspectives that shape how individuals perceive and respond to the world around them. It influences behavior, decision-making, and how one deals with challenges and opportunities.: 1. Focus on What You Can Control: Let’s face it, there’s a lot in the world that’s beyond our control.

But instead of stressing about the things you can’t change (the economy, etc) focus your energy on the things you can. Like how awesome your products are, or how you interact with your customers. Trust us, it makes a world of difference.

2. Embrace the Journey: Building a successful Etsy shop is a marathon, not a sprint. So instead of getting hung up on the destination, learn to enjoy the journey. Celebrate every little win, no matter how small, and remember that each step forward is progress in the right direction. Got a 5 star review? Celebrate?

Didn’t want to throw your laser out the window this week? Woohoo! Worked on a new product? YES! 3. Stay True to Yourself: In a sea of competitors, it can be tempting to try and mimic what everyone else is doing. But trust us when we say that authenticity is your secret weapon. Stay true to your unique style, voice, and vision – it’s what sets you apart from the crowd. Go back and revisit your WHY, your unique value and you’ll feel better!

4. Practice Self-Compassion: We’re our own toughest critics, right? But it’s important to cut yourself some slack every now and then. Give yourself September/October 2024

permission to make mistakes, learn from them, and move on stronger than before. You’re doing amazing, by the way!

5. Surround Yourself with Positivity: They say you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with, so choose wisely. Surround yourself with supportive friends, family, and fellow Etsy sellers who lift you up and inspire you to be your best self. Or, allow yourself 2 minutes to complain to someone, and then switch gears and talk about something positive!

6. Take Breaks and Recharge: Burnout is real. So make sure to take regular breaks to rest, recharge, and do things that bring you joy outside of your Etsy shop. Spending all day, every day trying to update listing, refreshing your stats (you know who you are), googling...Trust us, a little R&R goes a long way in keeping those creative juices flowing.

7. Spend time dreaming up your next best seller!

Downtime is the perfect time to look for new ideas to sell in your shop! Trends change frequently, and items that may have been popular in your shop last year, or even earlier this year MAY have slipped in popularity. Etsy releases trend reports quarterly, and Pinterest has a trend reporting as well here.

The Ultimate Adhesive Showdown: Finding the Perfect Bond for Your Acrylic Projects By: Patrick Boren, Houston Acrylic

Whether it’s in our store, via social media, or at a conference – one of the things that we frequently hear from both new and experienced makers is that working with adhesives can be a sticky situation. Most crafters have picked up at least a few tips and tricks when it comes to effectively using adhesives, and the Houston Acrylic team set out to compare over ten adhesives in a head-to-head challenge so that you can add even more knowledge to your toolbox that will help with the next time you’re assembling a project.

Before we get into details about the specifics of our head-to-head adhesive showdown, it’s worth considering a few questions about your project: • Can the adhesive be hidden between opaque layers to simplify your assembly?

• What environment will your final product be used in?

• Do the number of parts or the size of the pieces lend themselves more to sheet adhesive rather than liquid or gel adhesive?

Our head-to-head challenge tested nine different adhesives: seven liquid/gel options and two sheet options. While we couldn’t test every product on the market, these represented some of the most commonly encountered and most accessible ones if you’re in a bind and have to run to the local hardware store.

DualTite Double Sided Adhesive Sheet The acrylic lineup: To test each adhesive, we gathered several types of acrylic, including Clear Acrylic, Fluorescent Acrylic, Frosted Acrylic, Mirror Acrylic, and Iridescent Acrylic. All of the acrylic tested was cast acrylic, except for the mirror and iridescent sheets, which were extruded, as that is the only way those are manufactured.

The process: Each adhesive was used with each type of acrylic to bond it to a piece of clear acrylic, enabling us to see how the adhesive affected the front, the back, and the transparency of the assembled September/October 2024

piece. As we worked with each of these adhesives, we found a few protips that applied almost universally: • For gel adhesives and resins, apply a light mist of water to the surfaces you’re gluing together to promote an even spread of the adhesive.

Consider a silicone-tipped brush to spread the adhesive evenly and remove excess near the edges.

• Invest in appropriately sized silicone-tipped clamps to securely hold the pieces together and minimize the likelihood of air bubbles between them.

• Leave as much masking on the sections of your project where you’re not applying adhesive as possible to reduce accidental scratches and the potential for adhesive residue as you’re handling it.

The results: I’m sure a few people will jump straight to the section looking for the one answer on what adhesive to purchase. We would be doing a massive disservice to the community if we tried to boil down the results of this experiment into a single “best” adhesive. The reality is that the specifics of your project will influence which one you’ll want to use.

If you’re adhering clear, semi-transparent, or semi-translucent acrylic, we found Loctite Extreme and UV Resin to be the most invisible when carefully applied.

If you’re adhering opaque components, we found that both sheet adhesives (3M and DualTite) were the smallest mess and the least stress.

Some adhesives we tested contained components that crack mirror acrylic backing or iridescent acrylic film. If you’re working with one of those specialty types of acrylic, test a small piece before applying adhesive to your entire project.

Some adhesives may not leave a visible glue spot on clear, semi-transparent, or semi-translucent projects but can result in haziness. We primarily noted this with Quick Hold and CA Super Glue.

We had a great time experimenting with the different adhesive options. Fortunately, most of these are really affordable, so our best advice is to grab a few and try your hand at each to see which might be the best for your projects. As a final note, safety first, make sure that you use proper personal protective equipment and have good ventilation when working with adhesives.

CORNER Perforation Mode LightBurn’s Perforation Mode is a versatile tool for cutting dashed lines with your laser, without having to alter any part of the original design — it’s perfect for making tearaways in paper, fold lines in card stock, or stitching holes in leather.

Found in the Cut Settings Editor for Line layers, Perforation Mode allows you to choose a distance to Cut, followed by a distance to Skip.

The laser will alternate between firing over the distance you set to Cut, and turning off over the distance you set to Skip, across the length of any lines assigned to that layer.

Enabling Perforation Mode won’t make any change to the original design, but you can see the pattern generated by your Perforation Mode settings by opening the Preview window.

The sections to Cut and Skip do not have to be of equal distance, and in many cases it’s best if they’re not. For tearaway paper, try a Cut of 0.8 and Skip of 0.2. For fold lines, reverse those numbers, for a Cut of 0.8 and a Skip and 0.2. Stitching holes are up to personal preference — set the size and spacing of the hole according to what will work best for your project.

Perforation Mode can also help you cut delicate materials using a high-power laser. Setting very low Cut and Skip values — around 0.1 mm for both as a starting point — causes the laser to rapidly switch on and off across the length of a cut. If you also set the layer’s Power to the lowest level at which the laser will still fire, you’ll have effectively reduced total power output below its usual minimum.

There’s no end to the types of projects you can utilize Perforation Mode for — make your own wallets, handbags, lampshades, greeting cards, tickets, coupons, origami, stencils, and more.

ZoZo & Co.’s Mission to Support Down Syndrome Families In this issue, we highlight the inspiring story of Kelsey Schwab and her laser business, ZoZo & Co., which supports the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network (DSDN). Through her work, Kelsey not only creates beautiful items but also makes a significant impact on the lives of families affected by Down syndrome.

Kelsey’s journey with Down syndrome began when her son Oliver, one of a set of twins, was diagnosed before she gave birth. “It was devastating. We didn’t know anything about the community,” she recalls. Like many parents, Kelsey and her family received the diagnosis with limited support and information from medical professionals. This experience led her to discover DSDN, a nonprofit organization that provides resources and support for families facing Down syndrome diagnoses.

DSDN operates primarily through Facebook groups and a comprehensive website. They also recently launched an app to further extend their reach. “It’s a huge organization with both national and international outreach,” Kelsey explains. The network connects families, offering them a platform to share experiences and support each other.

A significant part of DSDN’s work involves organizing retreats for parents. These events provide a space for parents to meet, share their experiences, and build lasting friendships. “We have a mom retreat and a dad retreat each year,” says Kelsey. “Fundraising helps cover the costs for these retreats, making it possible for more parents to attend and connect.”

Kelsey is actively involved in DSDN’s medical outreach team, which educates healthcare professionals about delivering Down syndrome diagnoses with sensitivity and support.

This aspect of the network’s work is crucial, as many families initially receive the diagnosis with little to no guidance or encouragement.

Kelsey’s business, ZoZo & Co., has become a vital part of her fundraising efforts for DSDN. “I make various items with my laser, like kids’ stuff, teacher gifts, and baby products,” she

says. “I started making Down syndrome awareness items, such as tumblers, shirts, and more.”

These items are sold to raise funds, with 21% of all proceeds going towards DSDN’s various programs. You may ask, why 21%? Because it is the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome.

The impact of Kelsey’s efforts is far-reaching.

She mentions that her husband, who had never attended a retreat before, won a scholarship to attend the dad’s retreat in Nashville.

“He came back saying it was amazing,” Kelsey shares. “He made new friends and met other dads going through similar experiences.”

In addition to retreats and medical outreach, DSDN provides adoption scholarships, helping families who adopt children with Down syndrome. They also offer resources such as welcome baskets for new families, filled with essentials like onesies and books.

Kelsey’s dedication to DSDN and her innovative approach to fundraising through her laser business are inspiring examples of how businesses can make a positive impact. Her story underscores the importance of community, support, and continuous learning in the face of challenges.
