A COMPLETE WASTEWATER TREATMENT MONITORING SOLUTION

When the operator of a new industrial and civil wastewater plant in northern Italy required a multi-instrument water-monitoring solution for the site’s complex processes, they approached Chemitec to supply systems from its world-renowned range.

The high-tech 12,500 square metre plant was designed to allow the operator to manage their processes via SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) software applications, as they sought to take advantage of the Italian government’s Industry 4.0 tax incentives for investment in IoT-related technology.

This setup meant that each of the plant’s functions – the recovery of liquid waste, chemical analysis, preliminary verification, treatment and disposal –could be carried out automatically and without the need for intervention as part of a highly efficient operation.

Having benefitted from excellent analytical results and extensive product life after installing Chemitec instrumentation in their previous wastewater treatment plant, the operator invited us to once again deliver a solution.

HIGH-TECH INSTRUMENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL MEASUREMENT

Chemitec’s brief was to provide a complete instrumentation package to manage and control all the site’s chemical processes, which included:

• Chemical-physical-biological treatment

• Pretreatment of strong acids and bases

• Treatment of synthetic or oily emulsions

• Sewage unloading and tank cleaning

After assessing the application and identifying the customer’s specific requirements, Chemitec was able to specify dedicated instruments for each element of the process, at the heart of which was the 50 Series multiparameter control unit.

Designed specifically for high-end water-treatment processes, the 50 Series features intuitive, easy-to-use software and automatic recognition of sensors which made it ideal for this application.

In order to collect information on water-quality values, the 50 Series was served by state-of-the-art sensors for each parameter:

• S461 S (suspended solids)

• S411 DIG N (conductivity)

• S470 (ammonia and nitrates)

• S423 (dissolved oxygen)

Meanwhile, level measurement was achieved via a separate self-contained panel containing a 42 Series controller and three level transmitters:

• RDR 81 (radar)

• KPL (piezoresistive)

• KWL (hydrostatic head)

Sampling was performed by Chemitec’s SP5 A selfemptying sampler, with this thermostat-controlled system built into a stainless-steel cabinet containing two separate lockable compartments.

Finally, for flow measurement Chemitec’s technical team recommended S103 C & CH608 electromagnetic flow meters, both of which are proven at achieving precise, reliable readings even in challenging water conditions.

With all communication architecture created using a Modbus RS485 protocol, courtesy of Chemitec the operator has at their disposal a complete watermonitoring system that allows them to harvest accurate water-quality data and ensure the proper treatment and disposal of wastewater.
