SHARE THE MAGIC

eléonore MARCH 2016

Disneyland, the happiest place on earth, is where I made some of the most delightful memories of my childhood. As a young girl I was absolutely fascinated by the idea that anything in life was possible. Disney allowed me to cultivate a world that I wanted to live in. I could be anything I wanted to be in my youth: a dancer, a warrior, a princess, an intelligent individual. The possibilities were endless, and by surrounding myself with Disney films and the Disney mentality my imagination was broadened. The notion of becoming the best individual I could possibly be began to spark in my mind when watching Disney films. Just being present at Disneyland with my family at a young age, I knew that life did not have to be the way that others wanted me to see it, instead it was an opportunity to make life what I wanted it to be.

“Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well that when people see you do it they will want to come back and see you do it again and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do.” – Walt Disney

Disney taught me that I can be smart, ambitious, strong, independent, and spectacular in my own way. I knew that I did not need anyone to tell me that I was intelligent, or beautiful because every individual is intelligent and beautiful. Isn't that the Lassallian philosophy? Every single person on this earth has something to offer this world to make it riveting with love, happiness, harmony and excitement. I believe that Walt Disney brought a little piece of his world to make the entirety of the world in which we share a little bit more blissful. He never ceased to continue creating a world full of magic and happiness. Even today, Walt Disney’s legacy is alive, shaping children and leading them to believe that the possibilities are endless. In this issue, we hope you see that sometimes imagination is stronger than knowledge, and that the possibilities in life are still endless. ElÊonore Magazine chose Disney to be the theme of this month’s issue because we want to spread some love happiness, harmony, excitement and adventure. We hope that this issue makes you smile. It would give us great happiness if you gained some inspiration, or even felt a little spark of magic ignite in your life. -Elizabeth Ayala, Editor

Do you Believe in Magic?

04 elĂŠonore

By Alyson Hartman

I believe in magic. But not the typical kind. Magic princes and potions and palaces belong in fairy tales, which, don’t get me wrong, are quite incredible. Yet I prefer the normal, everyday magic that creeps into our mundane lives. There’s magic to be found all around you - you just have to look! In the deep, colored depths of the eyes of a passing stranger. Or in the water trickling down the sidewalk. Perhaps in the soft voice of a loved one, or the rush of wind that lifts your hair and makes your skin tingle. We are often too busy to notice these small phenomena. Take a step back. Breathe. Notice the magic around you. I make an effort to do this. I open my eyes, take a deep breath, and just notice. I notice what goes on around me. I notice the glimmer in a friend’s eye when they are happy. I notice the graceful movement of a butterfly out in my front yard. I notice the swirling patterns in the clouds above my head. Humans are but a mere fraction of the world we reside in. That which goes on around us is a mystery, and thus magical. Enjoy it. The world is full of magic - go and find it!

LONG TIME

A long-time Disneyland Annual Pass holder shares her secrets for a happy day in the Happiest Place on Earth.

My Disneyland Tips By Kaitlyn Gibson

06 eléonore

As a lifelong lover of Disney and an Annual Pass holder of ten years, I feel it is safe to consider myself somewhat of an expert in the Disney department. Disneyland is my happy place and the holder of some of my fondest childhood memories. I love everything about Disneyland: taking pictures with my favorite characters, the shows, the happy atmosphere, the food, and the rides. However, being somewhat of a self proclaimed expert, I also know that it is hard for “the happiest place on earth” to live up to its name when the park is packed with hundreds of other people also hoping to enjoy a memorable day at Disneyland. So here are a few tips to help you make your day a magical adventure at Disneyland.

1 2

1. Get There Early The earlier the better. People tend to get to the park between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. If you get there in the morning, the lines will be shorter and you will be able to enjoy the more popular attractions without the long waits. Being able to savor the park with a small crowd is so much more enjoyable than it sounds. You will also be able to get fast passes for earlier in the day.

2. Utilize Fastpasses

Fastpasses are tickets you get for a ride that allow you to come back and ride the attraction later in the day (within a one hour time span given on the card) in a much shorter line. There is no charge for Fastpasses, but you must wait a certain amount of time before getting another. It is recommended that you come within the hour period stated on your Fastpass, but the staff usually have a 15 minute grace period after the end time. Fastpasses significantly cut down wait times and are distributed using your ticket or pass close to the entrance of the attraction. The rides that offer Fastpasses include Big Thunder Mountain, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, The Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones Adventure, Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin, Space Mountain (including Hyperspace Mountain), Splash Mountain, and Star Tours. (Hint: the rides that have the longest lines and run out of the Fastpasses the quickest are usually Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, and, on hot days, Splash Mountain).

3. See a Show

3

There are multiple shows throughout the day; each different and entertaining in its own way. If you’re looking for a quick break, Mickey’s Magical Map (located in the Fantasyland Theatre just outside of Toontown) is a combination of animation and live acting including some of your favorite characters and songs. For all the Star Wars fans out there, Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple (in the Tomorrowland Terrace) offers a chance to watch children from the audience be trained with a Jedi and then head to battle against an evil villain. In Frontierland, The Golden Horseshoe gives you a chance to take a food break, while also having short, funny, audience interactive shows. When night comes, the Paint the Night Parade lights up from Main Street all the way to It’s a Small World. My personal favorite, the Disneyland Forever fireworks, take place shortly after the Paint the

march 07

Night Parade and include fireworks as well as music and amazing projections. (Hint: the best seats are on Main Street with a view of the castle).

4

4. Go on the Kid Rides

Mansion and even riding the Disneyland Railroad* around the park can be enjoyable and offer a break from walking.

5. Get a Wait Time App

Even if you’re more of a coaster person, it is still fun to explore the smaller rides; and not just because they have shorter lines. Rides like It’s a Small World, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Snow White’s Scary Adventure, Pinocchio’s Daring Journey, and Storybook Land Canal boats all typically have shorter lines, and are fun for all ages. The Haunted

5

There are multiple apps that give wait times for all of the rides in both Disneyland and California Adventures and can be extremely useful when contemplating what ride to go on next. These apps are controlled by guests who update the times themselves, making them available for others to see. The times given are often close or exact to the real wait time, and are updated frequently. Some of the most common (and free) apps are Disneyland, MouseWait, Wait Times forDisneyland, and Magic Guide for Disneyland. There is also a board with wait times updated by the staff every fifteen to thirty minutes located at the end of Main Street. There is always at least one worker there, so you can also ask them for any other ride times or Fastpass returns. Days at Disneyland are days that are filled with happiness, laughter, and memories; no matter how you end up spending the day. Take in the moments, and cherish the time you are there and the people you are with. After all, if you make it so, Disneyland is truly the happiest place on earth.

08 eléonore

*The Disneyland Railroad will be closed for the next year as 'Star Wars' Land is built, but there is a cool Trains of Disneyland exhibit at the Main Street Station. Other rides closed during construction include Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia and Tom Sawyer's Island .

Do You

By Ryan Pizante

From the words of Disney’s "Up’s" energetic, tomboyish character, Ellie, “Adventure is out there!” As with any notable Disney movie, here we find the phrase that propels our story along. The story of Carl Fredrickson and his childhood sweetheart Ellie, and how their search for adventure in conventional life endeared well into adulthood, despite the obstacles they may have faced along the way. While their plan isn’t foolproof, and may lead to fractured arms and broken hearts, our protagonists teach us that the best way to heal is to never let the essence, or, rather the spirit, of adventure die. Before we continue, we have to ask why this “Spirit of Adventure” not only plays a pertinent role in the lives of Carl and Ellie, but also in our own lives as young adults?

How to find adventure as a teenager in today’s society 10 eléonore

Believe in Disney? In terms of our couple, even the menial nature of everyday chores like window washing, dusting, and organizing furniture extends beyond routine. From the charming nature of their living room to the energy they exude, even in their old age, running up the intimidating slope of hill near their home, we see that with spirit, any adventure is accomplishable, no matter how steep the climb. They view their lives as the penny jar half full, so to speak, saving up for the opportunity to explore the infamous Paradise Falls. And though obstacles greet them along the way, causing them to sacrifice their penny jar savings on more than one occasion, their dream does not go unfulfilled. Even when confronted with the death of his sweetheart, Ellie, Carl stubbornly refuses to give in to the rapidly industrializing nature of his environment, and seizes everyone’s attention with his flamboyant escape technique. Evading the loss of his home, and along with it, the memory of his wife, Carl takes on a seemingly impossible adventure a man of his age would unlikely be accredited for in our society today. Carl’s balloons, in a multicolored array, spanning the length of his home, carry him far up above the sprawling city streets below. Carl embarks on his adventure to Paradise Falls to fulfill Ellie’s and his seemingly impossible dream, and in the end of the film, succeeds. It is with this, that both Carl’s and Ellie’s spirits of adventure live on, despite the most human of obstacles - death. As young adults, society challenges us to make choices that consequently affect our identities, and how we will live our lives as we progress further into adulthood. However, even with the existential pressures that come with being a teenager, and the gravity of society, sometimes we need to take on new adventures despite the repercussions that tend to follow. Sometimes spontaneity is the key to a more fulfilled life, and a more stable identity. Adventure is out there; it’s only a matter of where you look. One can find adventure in nearly everything, from the household chores Carl and Ellie had to fulfill, to merely exploring the world around you. When with friends, digressing from the somewhat stressful work environment school creates, I like to explore the reaches of my own city, wandering South Pasadena for hours on end. From trekking up the giant hill leading to the Water Tower to small photo shoots on the SPHS football field, we cover the broadest reaches of our hometown. Sometimes, even, when the need to escape is as strong as Carl’s, we let the Metro carry us away to new, uncharted locations in the lives of Southern California teens. And maybe, beyond the societal limitations we all face, we all find our own version of “Paradise Falls” in our own time. And maybe we never will, but therein lies our spirits of adventure.

Style with the Magical Mary Poppins

By Annika Suderburg

Ever since I was a little girl, I have admired the graceful whimsy that the story of Mary Poppins offers. My interest in the tale was partly fueled by the wonderful costumes credited to Tony Walton, Julie Andrews' then husband. Although the costumes were not entirely historically accurate for 1910, they were still fabulous. This article will focus on the similarities of the costumes in the movie to the styles of today! Enjoy.

·

LOOK #1 Mrs. Corey’s Daughters

Mrs. Corey (the Sweets Shoppe owner, near the park) and her two tall daughters are dressed in matching, skirt and top combinations. The look is strongly infused with nautical style and simply brimming with similarities to modern looks. One trend that has risen to the top of late is the turtleneck collar. This neckline is best seen on the daughter to the left, with the pink bow. This style is so cute and the two stripes at the top make it even more adorable and adds the perfect extra flair this outfit needed. Also on the left-most daughter, is a pleated, accordion skirt which is just adorable and similar to the classic fit and flare look popular today.

·

LOOK #2 Mrs Banks’ Floral Yellow Dress

This dress Mrs. Banks wears when writing a Nanna Advertisement is such a fun style! It incorporates a floral theme without being too obtrusive but, at the same time, adds a little pop. Floral designs have been all the rage for the past few years, and for good reason, too. The floral look brightens up any day, rain or shine and can be worn in a variety of ways. Mrs. Banks wears it as an accent, however, it can also be the primary fabric on a garment or featured on an accessory

LOOK #3 Mary Poppins’ White & Red Dress

Mary’s ensemble is just like her, practically perfect in every way. The sheer sleeves are especially lovely and incredibly similar to many of today’s styles. The sleeves and upper bodice of the dress are made of sheer fabric, which continues down the entire dress. This fabric also carries a few white embellishments. The dress also follows the beloved fit and flare pattern and stops below the knees.

LOOK #4 Bert’s Striped Jacket

·

This is such a great jacket! The matching hat also helps to make the bright blue bowtie stand out and lets it provide a contrast to the warm tones of the jacket. These stripes are super neat and have just enough whimsy. Stripes have just exploded in the last couple years. They are in every store, in every brand, in every style. Stripes are a great pattern as they can be worn on a variety of garments; skirts, pants, dresses, and tops.

· ·

LOOK #5 Jane’s Kite Dress

This is a very adorable dress. The neckline is especially fantastic as it incorporates eyelet. Eyelet is basically a series of small, round holes in a garment that often form some sort of pattern. It has also been popping up everywhere as of late. The pattern can be found anywhere from couture runway shows to department stores to Target, oh, and on Jane when she flies a kite, of course.

Woman of the Month

Selena Quintanilla - A Magical Woman Selena Quintanilla (April 16, 1971- March 31, 1995) is inspiring, amazing, and most definitely missed. Sometimes I think to myself, “How can I miss someone so much that I have never met?” I know that a lot of devout Selena fans that were born after her death wonder about the same question. I have come to the conclusion that it is her music and shining positivity that makes people love her so much.

By Elizabeth Ayala

Selena Quintanilla at Disneyland c 1991

“If you have a dream, don’t let anybody take that away from you” - Selena Quintanilla Growing up listening to her music and watching her biographical film starring Jennifer Lopez, which was directed by Gregory Nava, I felt connected to her. I looked up to her for her perseverance and ambition. She proved to the world that she could be successful in a predominantly male industry. Selena is the epitome of a strong Mexican-American woman. I feel that she brings me closer to my roots and makes me feel something within me that words cannot explain. Selena is magic and there is no denying that her magic will never die because she does not just stand for Mexican-Americans,

but she stands for all individuals that struggle to reach their ultimate dreams. Selena has helped so many young women realize that they can do more than what society tells them that they can do. Selena has taught me that if I want my dreams enough that the struggle getting to them is worth enduring. She makes me want to be a better person and live a better life. Selena has taught me that I need to spread goodness and love to the world because we are never promised tomorrow. Selena’s death was a tragic loss for the world because she was a shining light that made this world a better place. I am so grateful that I have been able to connect with her and feel her love through her music. Music that will live forever. Though she is no longer here in the physical world the memory of Selena, and what she stood for will forever remain on this earth. P.S. you should definitely listen to Selena Live: the last concert. You can feel her love for music, performing, and life. She had such an amazing energy. My favorite songs would have to be…all of them, but if I had to choose three from the live album they would be Como la Flor, El Chico de Apartemento 512, and of course, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.

Riding Into Adventure By Katerina Esquivel Adventure can be found through an abundance of ways. I think a great way to keep your life adventurous is to get active and try something new. Staying active is not always easy and definitely isn’t the first thing on my mind. However, I think anything can be fun if you make it so and go into it with the right attitude. If you are ever nervous about trying something new, I recommend taking a friend with you. That way you can experience it together and encourage each other. You’ll also have someone to lean on if you need to. In the spirit of adventure and trying something out of the ordinary, I recently attended a Soul Cycle class with my best friend. Going to Soul Cycle had always been something I wanted to try. People rave about those classes, and I now know why. I must admit, I was a bit nervous going into the class. Trying something different always makes butterflies flutter in my stomach. More than being nervous, I was giddy with excitement and expectation. I couldn’t wait to hop on a bike and find out why everyone was so intrigued by the experience. The ride, was amazing. The instructor, the music, the dancing, the workout, all of it was exhilarating. It was extremely rewarding and all I want to do now is go back. I can not accurately explain that hour of magic, but can only advise you to try a Soul Cycle class for yourself.

After all, experiencing an adventure first hand is what makes it magical.

When I see people following their individual paths, it encourages me to pursue my own course. I see how much they have grown and accomplished and know that before they got there, they had to start from where I am right now. My dad is a runner, and he regularly says that “there will always be someone faster than you, and someone slower than you, but you have to learn to run your race, at your own pace.” I try not to compare myself to other people, but instead see them as something to look up to or as a point of success to work towards. I don’t want to get to where they are. I want to get to where I feel that same sense of success.

An Adventure for the heart of a Prince A book review by two By Sarah Adams This month we decided the theme of the magazine would be adventure. The main character of the book The Selection goes on the biggest adventure of her life when she is chosen to be one of 35 girls to go to the palace and tries to win the prince’s heart. America, a young teenage girl living in poverty with her family, had her life planned out. She had decided she would marry her secret boyfriend and they would live happily together. Everything changes after she is chosen to move to the palace and meets Prince Maxon. Between the rebel attacks on the palace and her ex-boyfriend arriving, this book is packed with thrilling adventures and breath-taking moments around every corner. The Selection by Kiera Cass, is now definitely one of my top five favorite books and I would definitely recommend it to all of you. The Selection is the first book in a trilogy that was originally published in 2015. It takes place in a future version of the United States after the Third World War. America is forced to choose between new love and old. Who will she choose? By Samantha Knapp If you are looking for a little adventure this month, The Selection is the book you might just be waiting for. The Hunger Games collides with The Bachelor in this amazing story about America Singer and her journey through fierce competition, love, and an unexpected turn of events. America’s worst nightmare is being chosen for the Selection, a process in which all selected girls are preened and cleaned to compete for the hand of Prince Maxon. America always thought she would live in her dirty old house with her poor family and marry her secret love, Aspen. Fate had another plan for her. When America is chosen to be part of the Selection, she begins to realize that the life she thought she wanted is much different from what the future holds. The Selection is definitely one of my favorite books. Set in a future United States after the Third World War, the political situation of the country has a lot of sway on the events of the story, which is something I always value in a good book. I would recommend this book in a heartbeat. America’s adventure through the Selection is one that has you sitting on the edge of your seat. If you loved reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The Selection could be your new favorite trilogy.

Your Beautiful Flower Crown BUY OR DIY? In this issue we have a fantastic project for all of you who want that bohemian inspired flower crown, but do not want to break the bank while shopping at Urban Outfitters or Topshop. Do not get me wrong I love shopping there when I have just gotten paid from babysitting, but a part of me feels guilty spending $20 on a flower crown. The last time I was looking through Urban’s accessory section I began to look at the quality of the flower crowns and thought that I could make something just as good, if not better than what they had. In addition, if I made my own flower crown I knew that I would have the freedom to customize it and make it exactly the way I wanted. So I marched straight out of Urban Outfitters and drove to Michaels Craft Store and got the supplies I needed to make my flower crown. In the end, my flower crown turned out to be amazing. I actually wore one that I made to a wedding. I thought it added a whole new dimension to my outfit. I think they would also be really cute to sport at Disneyland! Be careful! It gets addicting making these flower crowns.

Your Flower Crown (much less than $20) What you will need: Green Floral Wire Green Floral Tape Fake Flowers Hot Glue Gun Ribbon (Optional)

Firstly, if you have a giant garland of fake flowers, as I usually do, you will need to detach all of the flowers from the vine, making sure that the green plastic is no longer around the bud of the flowers.

march 23

4

Next, you are going to take two pieces of your green floral wire and begin to shape them into a circle that will fit your head. I like to shape it by wrapping both halves around my thigh and then connecting the two separate pieces into a circle. You should twist the two pieces so that they are snug.

In this next step, you are going to begin wrapping your floral tape around the entire green wire that you just formed into a circle. Doing this will ensure the solid structure of your flower crown, and keep the wire from poking you.

You are now ready to begin hot gluing your flowers to your crown. Make sure that when you glue your flower to the crown that you are holding it firmly to the wire for at least 30 seconds. Continue this step until you finish applying flowers all the way around the wire.

You now have a completed full crown! I wanted to add some smaller flowers on the top so that my crown looked a little bit fuller. You can do this as well, or just leave it the way it is.

These are two other flower crowns that I made: Me sporting my flower crown at a wedding.

Eight Songs You Should Have on Your Car Playlist By Hannah Alviso

When I was asked to write this article, I figured that maybe I should come up with a playlist that gave off spring vibes. I shot down that idea because the first night I attempted to make a playlist to give off spring vibes was with just music that I heard for the first time. It was only difficult for me to do that because I am not the type of person to listen to the indie genre. I quickly started thinking of music I listen to that would still give off the spring idea. I figured that because spring is full of flowers, I associated it with nice acoustic songs, but the following day, I found out that this playlist is supposed to get people pumped and ready for spring break. And there are only so many acoustic songs that get people pumped. The next day I asked my friends for the songs they listen to that get them pumped and found that all of the songs they gave me were songs that were either rock classics or a song from 2010 -11 So, with the help of a few of my friends and Barney Stinson, I came to the conclusion that you could never go wrong with classic rock songs or songs from 2010 and 2011.

226 elĂŠonore

The following songs have passed the “car test” with various people and is not ranked in any specific order. For a song to pass the car test, you simply play the song while on a car ride and if the majority of people in the car sing along dramatically, then the song has passed the car test.

1. Don’t Stop Me Now - Queen

Now, if you have not heard this song, you have not lived. Don’t Stop Me Now was the first song to go onto this list. The reason being is that no matter the occasion, whenever this song is played, it always gets people singing along and places people in a better mood. I once played it by accident during the break of my summer school class and got a few people to sing along.

2. Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson

This is one of those songs where you push to the back of your mind, but whenever it’s mentioned or played, you remember all the lyrics (or at least the chorus) and you know exactly what song it is when you hear the first two seconds of it.

3. Don’t Stop Believin’ - Journey

This song and I go way back, it was the first song I learned on the piano. And it gets you pumped and inspired at the same time! What else would you expect from just reading the song title.

4. S.O.S. - Jonas Brothers

I cannot explain how much I miss the Jonas Brothers. I remember going to their concert and hearing this song performed live in Las Vegas. Even though we had nosebleed seats I enjoyed every second.

5. Dancing With Myself - Billy Idol

This song is on this list because it was on Barney Stinson’s ‘Get Psyched Mix’, or the playlist I found on Spotify with the title ‘Barney Stinson’s Get Psyched Mix’.

march 27

6. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Because, who doesn’t sing along to Bohemian Rhapsody? If you don’t then you’re not living, and if this is added on with Don’t Stop Me Now, you are not human.

7. Runaway Baby - Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars never fails to amaze me, and this song always puts me in a better mood or keeps me in a good mood if I’m already in a good mood. Whenever I hear this song I always dance, even just a little bit, despite my lack of talent in the dance department.

8. You Give Love A Bad Name - Bon Jovi

This song is also here because it’s on Barney’s Mix and any song on Barney’s mix would be legenーwait for itーdary! Except I know for a fact that this is on his mix since it was played multiple times.
