LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Dear Lancer Community,
As I walk across campus this spring, I am struck by a profound sense of peace that stands in stark contrast to the horizon we faced just over one year ago. In early 2025, the Eaton fires tested our resolve, displacing families and casting a shadow over our community. I remember the ash on our walkways and the uncertainty in our eyes, but more clearly, I remember the unwavering strength of the Lancer spirit that rose to meet that challenge.
Today, as you flip through the pages of this issue of Lancer Magazine, you will see that we are no longer in a season of recovery; we are in a season of remarkable renewal. Our reflection today is not one of sorrow, but of profound gratitude and pride. We have done more than just endure; we have flourished.
In the twelve months since that crisis, our Five Core Principles have served as my "north star," guiding our transition from crisis management back to our true purpose: fostering the extraordinary potential of our students.
• Faith in the Presence of God: In the wake of the fires, we gathered in prayer, finding strength in our spiritual foundation. Today, that faith continues to sustain us as we support those for whom the rebuilding process continues. We remain steadfast in the belief that through every trial, we are never alone.
• Inclusive Community & The Lancer Support Drive and Fund: Last year, we saw our community in its truest form. Through the Lancer Support Drive and Fund, our community provided immediate relief to those impacted by the fires. This spirit of radical hospitality remains at our core, ensuring that every Lancer feels valued and protected.
The resilience we forged in 2025 has become the fuel for our students’ continued success. While the fires were a local challenge, the achievements of our students remind us that the Lasallian mission prepares young people for a global—and even universal—stage.
In this issue, we celebrate Lauren Rodriguez ’27, whose co-authorship of a NASA-published technical memorandum on the MANTA Explorer represents a level of scientific achievement rarely seen at the high school level. Similarly, we honor Noah Leiva ’26, who served as the only Californian selected for the prestigious United States Senate Page Program, witnessing the heart of our democracy in action. Lauren and Noah embody the Quality Education and leadership we strive for; they remind us that while fire can change a landscape, it cannot dim the curiosity or the ambition of a student supported by a community that believes in them.
Beyond these national stages, our campus is buzzing with the energy of a community in full bloom. We witnessed the creative brilliance of
Dylan Soltis ’27 and the premiere of his film, Lucid, a testament to the caliber of work coming out of our Cinematic Arts Center and the World Away Program. On the courts and greens, our student-athletes reached the pinnacle of competition, with Girls Golf and Girls Basketball both securing CIF Championship victories that brought our entire school together in celebration.
Furthermore, through our Center for Cultural Perspectives, our students have truly become global citizens. This year’s exchange trips to Argentina, Shanghai, Spain, and France have allowed our Lancers to live out our principle of an Inclusive Community on an international scale, fostering intercultural understanding that will last a lifetime.
This issue also contains our Annual Report of Giving, a document that serves as a testament to the staggering generosity of our community. In a year marked by unexpected hardship, your support did not waver—it intensified. This philanthropy is the engine that drives our boldest educational aspirations, from the cuttingedge resources in our classrooms to the vital financial assistance that ensures the La Salle experience remains accessible to every talented student, regardless of their circumstances.
We also take great pride in the updates from our Alumni. Whether it is Thomas Mendez ’04 making waves at Dodger Stadium or our many graduates returning for the Taste of La Salle to support our scholarship funds, our alumni remain the living legacy of this institution. To our alumni: your professional successes and continued involvement with the school are the greatest validation of our mission. You prove that once a Lancer, always a Lancer.
As we move forward with the planning of our next strategic plan, the lessons of this past year remain woven into our vision. We are investing in our infrastructure and our counseling resources with renewed intentionality, recognizing that a safe, supportive environment is the prerequisite for the kind of "bold ideas" our students are now contributing to the world.
The hillsides above Pasadena are turning green again—a natural testament to the cycle of rebirth. Similarly, La Salle College Preparatory stands stronger today—more
unified, more innovative, and more deeply committed to the young people entrusted to our care.
Thank you for your continued trust and for the resilience you have demonstrated. Together, we continue to dream big, work hard, and make a positive impact on the world. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever.
Warmly,
Perry Martin, M.Ed. President, La Salle College Preparatory
Living the Lasallian Mission in the Wake of Tragedy ENTER TO LEARN, LEAVE TO SERVE
The evening of January 7, 2025 stands as a pivotal day in collective memory to all those who call the San Gabriel Valley their home. It marks the outbreak of a fire which tore through Eaton Canyon fueled by 80mph winds and the bone-dry winter season that proceeded. Flames spread their devastation throughout Altadena and the northern parts of Pasadena, raging in the weeks that followed.
All told, the fire would claim 19 lives, burn 9,000 structures across 14,000 acres and forever change the cultural and geographical landscape that so many in the Lasallian community call home.
By Carolyn Neuhausen, ’04
But where there was unimaginable devastation, La Salle community members Edgar “Weather” McGregor ’18 and Julia Frisina ’11 threw themselves into the effort to help others.
LEADING PEOPLE TO SAFETY
McGregor is a local meteorologist and environmentalist serving hyperlocal weather news to the San Gabriel foothill communities across a range of digital platforms. His knowledge of the weather and wind patterns were instrumental in forecasting how dangerous the fire could - and would be - for the Altadena area, and his warnings to get out of the foothill area saved countless
lives that evening. For his life-saving news and the 2,000+ hours he’s dedicated to cleaning local hiking trails, he is La Salle’s 2026 Alumni Award recipient.
The scale of the destruction and the number of La Salle families affected - both those of alumni and current students, was overwhelming and heartbreaking. Social media would tell the stories of entire neighborhoods that burned, of fire survivors who lost memories and loved possessions and a sense of safety.
The stories that would roll through on social media in the days that followed, the number of currently enrolled La Salle families and affected alumni was overwhelming and heartbreaking.
A DRIVE TO SUPPLY ESSENTIALS AND HOPE
When news of the fire broke out Julia Frisina ’11, Director of Student Life, rushed from a La Salle basketball game to her parents’ home only to see Eaton Canyon engulfed in orange flames. Like many of her neighbors in the Altadena community, she rushed to help her family evacuate without knowing when or if they could ever return to her childhood home.
Without a place to stay, she took her parents and family dog into her apartment, and that’s when it hit her: the fire hadn’t just taken from her family, but for many in the La Salle community.
“My dad was sleeping on my couch and he didn’t have anything, you know? This is the situation for most people, they don’t even have a pillow to call their own.” While Julia later learned her childhood home was miraculously spared, seeing her father displaced and empty-handed drove home the reality of her neighbors' losses, turning her gratitude into an urgent call to serve.
Recognizing that countless community members would need immediate help, Julia jumped into action, bringing school officials together to create the Fire Response Team. This team organized a week-long drive collecting and providing essentials to fire survivors.
TAKING ACTION, STEPPING INTO SERVICE
Over the course of a week, the drive collected $320,000 in funds, gift cards and goods to help 50 current La Salle families, 65 alumni and hundreds throughout
the San Gabriel Valley. The effort provided essentials, including pillows, school supplies, toys, toiletries, towels, flashlights, electronic chargers, bedding, pet supplies, and snacks to each of the affected families. Volunteers and local restaurants, including support from World Central Kitchen, provided countless hot meals over the course of that week.
And although the drive provided the physical items fire survivors needed, some of the most important moments in those days were when people felt seen in their grief, where being in community with others was an antidote to the overwhelm, loneliness and isolation they felt.
In those uncertain days, La Salle served as a second home to current students, alumni, and Julia as they sorted through their individual emotional losses. Many alumni came back to participate and donate in the drive, checking in daily in any way they could help out. “It was crazy, but it was very cool that they got to come back to the place that they once called home and let it be home for them again,” Julia said.
Providing relief for those affected was paramount for Julia. “I wanted to give them a place that they
felt so loved and seen and cared for that, you know, everything else going on around was still happening, but for a moment, for a glimpse, they got to feel at ease,” she explains.
The drive also grew into a wider effort when officials at other nearby schools like St. Elizabeth coordinated with La Salle, resulting in a drive that amplified help throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
CALLED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
When asked how she had the energy to organize a large-scale weeklong drive in the midst of chaos and destruction and uncertainty, Julia thinks back to the mission of La Salle: Enter to learn, leave to serve. I thought “[to serve] is my obligation as a human. Obviously because I came from Altadena, but no matter where the fire was, I would have felt the same way, this is our obligation to help others, it’s not a task, but coming from a place of knowing in the moment that you just had to step in and [help others] in that moment. I let God work through me, I am the hands and feet and I think that’s what gave me the energy throughout the week,” she says.
For Julia, and the countless alumni who helped in
the supply drive, the feeling of stepping into action to serve others was a kind of salve for their own experience of the devastation. It wasn’t just that alumni asked her every day what they could provide, but they also showed up day after day. to help out.
“[Alumni would say] ’I can have all of this here tomorrow’, and that always speaks volumes to me, because [alumni] don’t have an obligation to La Salle anymore, right? Like, you don’t go here anymore, you don’t need to do anything, but this place means so much to you.”
Meaningful too were the number of affected current students who helped at the drive. As they were working through their own losses, they helped others through theirs. “You know, the kids inspired me so much. [Their] entire world is gone, flipped upside down, you’re living with who knows how many people. They never used it as a crutch, as an excuse, they leaned on their community, and we supported them how we could.”
TIME TO HEAL
A week later, when school reopened, faculty and school administrators knew it was important to acknowledge the emotional and spiritual grief students and families were working through. So the first day back was a soft reopening, where students partook in a range of therapeutic modalities including prayer stations, art stations, meditation, yoga and time with therapy animals.
“Our counseling team has been instrumental in following up with our students and providing them with resources and support as they navigated that first year, including a wellness day for students to just take time and prioritize their mental health
and wellbeing,” said Nicole Carlos, ’12, Director of Marketing and Communications.
And because the healing process takes time, school president Perry Martin continues to check in with families on a regular basis to see where and how La Salle can lean in to help. Part of that effort is supporting impacted families through the Lancer Support Fund that was established in the wake of the aftermath of the fires. This fund directly supports impacted families as they continue to rebuild their lives, and donations can be made at: lasallehs.org/lancersupportfund
Altadena is forever changed but remains a vibrant part of La Salle’s fabric, and students participate in community events to keep the spirit of Altadena alive. Since the fire, La Salle has worked with local businesses and partnered with the Altadena Collaboratory, where students painted murals, sorted through donations and wrote personal notes of encouragement to fire survivors. For African American history month, La Salle invited Perry’s Joint to cater an event where Rhythms of the Village, a music group rooted in African culture, played. Both groups were founded in Altadena.
Far beyond the boundaries of a campus, La Salle stands as a living testament to the power of community, forged in compassion and a mission expressed in the quiet and tireless acts of service.

La Salle Alumni Month of Service
APRIL 2025
Orange County • Pasadena • San Diego
On Saturday, April 26, the Alumni Association partnered with Pasadena’s Union Station Homeless Services to give back in a big way. NEW YORK
Alumni Month of Service is a unique opportunity to unite La Salle grads through community service. With over 7,000 alumni living in nearly every state, the potential to have a positive and meaningful impact in the community is enormous.
During the month of April, Alumni were encouraged to:
• Volunteer! Projects were organized in Pasadena, the Bay Area, Orange County, San Diego & New York City.
• Get involved in a service project in their own community
• Share their volunteer experience and pictures with the La Salle community for a chance to win alumni swag!
By volunteering, alums embody the mission of La Salle College Preparatory and salute their Alma Mater’s commitment to service to others.

Alumni in Orange County volunteered with Patriots and Paws in Anaheim on Saturday, April 26th, to help inventory donations, stock the shelves and help veterans “shop” for the items they need.
SAN DIEGO
Alumni and their families came together for a meaningful day of service at the Veterans Memorial. They spent time cleaning plaques, collecting trash, and learning about the lives and service of the veterans honored there. It was a day of reflection, community, and connection — with plenty of good conversation along the way.
New York City alumni volunteered with the Fort Tryon Park Trust on May 18th to remove debris and weeds and prepare the site for planting.

Lauren Rodriguez ’2 7
Coauthors NASA-Published Research on Mars Exploration
La Salle College Preparatory is proud to recognize Lauren Rodriguez ’27, who recently coauthored a NASApublished technical memorandum, “The Mars Aerial Navigation Terrain and Atmosphere (MANTA) Explorer,” marking an extraordinary achievement in high school scientific research and aerospace innovation.
Lauren was selected to participate in the NASA High School Aviation Concept Design Experience (HACE) 2025, a prestigious and highly competitive internship program. Of 767 applicants nationwide, only 36 were selected, placing Lauren among a small group of high-achieving high school researchers chosen to collaborate with NASA professionals.
Throughout the summer, participants collaborated virtually before attending an in-person experience at the NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, where they toured facilities and worked alongside engineers, scientists, and mentors. Lauren’s team developed the Mars Aerial Navigation Terrain & Atmosphere (MANTA) Explorer, an innovative mission concept to advance Mars exploration.
The MANTA Explorer is a fixed-wing vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft capable of gliding across the Martian surface and reaching areas inaccessible to traditional landers or existing aerial systems. The concept integrates advanced sensors and intelligent navigation systems to study Martian terrain, atmospheric conditions, and signs of ancient water, helping scientists better understand Mars as a complete and interconnected environment.
Lauren’s work on the project culminated in the official publication of the team’s research as a NASA technical memorandum, an achievement rarely seen at the high school level. Her contribution reflects the academic excellence, innovation, and curiosity fostered at La Salle College Preparatory.
Lauren’s NASA mentor, Raj Pai, highlighted the impact of working with student interns, noting that today’s students are not only dreaming about the future of space exploration but also actively contributing to it through research, collaboration, and bold ideas.
We are incredibly proud of Lauren for representing La Salle on a national stage and for demonstrating what is possible when passion for learning meets opportunity.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARS
MAJOR BEN MEIER ’00 USAF
Memorial Scholarship
Aiden Sentelices ’25 was presented with the $5,000 scholarship at Senior Presentation in May. This scholarship is made possible by the Meier Family for a graduating senior who is attending a military academy, like Ben did.
Major Benjamin D. Meier was in the United States Air Force and was a La Salle graduate from the Class of 2000. Ben’s career as an Air Force fighter pilot had him deployed to Iraq, Libya, and twice to Afghanistan.
Among other commendations, Major Meier was awarded the Air Medal seven times, the Aerial Achievement Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal twice, and the Air Force Combat Action Medal. In one specific mission in Afghanistan, where he saved over 50 ground troops and protected innocent civilians with his tactical patience and aerial skills, Ben was the U.S. Air Forces in Europe nominee for the Exceptional Pilot Award, at which time he was considered in the top 10 of approximately 12,000 Air Force pilots.
Major Benjamin Meier passed away on September 29, 2015 in Lancaster, CA. He was struck by a hit-and-run driver while on his morning run. Ben is survived by his mother Ann, his wife Becky, their sons Logan and Gabriel, his two
Reagan Bean ’25, the Alumni Heritage Scholar (a 4 year scholarship awarded as an incoming freshman). sisters, and their families. The family established the Major Benjamin D. Meier Memorial Scholarship to keep Ben’s memory alive and to honor students like Aiden who are committing themselves to a life of service by attending a military academy.
This $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to Aiden upon his successful completion of basic cadet training at the United States Air Force Academy. Many thanks to the Meier Family for continuing Ben’s legacy of service to others and for allowing La Salle to keep his memory alive at his Alma Mater through this scholarship.
Dash Award in Memory of ARION TAVAKOLI ’09
The Dash Award is a scholarship that was instated in 2016 in honor of Arion Tavakoli ’09, who passed away in 2014. This scholarship honors a graduating senior who lives each day with a passion for making a difference and has a love and appreciation of life, the same values that Arion showed during his short time on this earth. This $1,500 award is made possible by private donations from Arion’s friends and family who desire to keep Arion’s memory alive at La Salle. This year’s recipient of the Dash Award, nominated by La Salle’s faculty and staff and then chosen by the Tavakoli Family, is Shawn Robles ’25.
Noah Leiva ’2 6
Joins The Prestigious United States Senate Page Program
Noah Leiva ’26 had the incredible opportunity to live, work, and study full-time in Washington, D.C. through the prestigious United States Senate Page Program. Sponsored by Senator Alex Padilla, Noah was one of only 29 high school juniors selected nationwide and the only student from California chosen for this historic program.
As a Senate Page, Noah balanced his time between early mornings and afternoons on the Senate Floor, where he delivered legislative material, assisted during votes and debates, and witnessed democracy in action firsthand. His experience included once-in-a-lifetime opportunities such as meeting world leaders, attending the U.S. President’s Joint Address to Congress, and supporting a historic 25-hour speech on the Senate Floor.
Noah’s hard work and positive spirit earned him both the United States Senate Page Program Certificate of Appreciation and the Principal’s Award, recognizing his leadership and dedication throughout the semester. We are so proud of Noah for representing La Salle on the national stage and living out the values of service, leadership, and excellence.
Homecoming 2024
The Homecoming festivities were a success, drawing a large crowd of alumni eager to reconnect and celebrate. The alumni Board’s Booth was bustling with activity as alumni visited to catch up and gather La Salle Alumni swag. The halftime show was a particular highlight, as Eleni Daughters ’17 and Myles Cecil ’17 were honored for their outstanding athletic achievements. The two honorees were presented with the 10th Battalion awards by La Salle President Perry Martin and Principal Ernest Siy, who expressed their admiration for the students’ dedication and accomplishments.
Homecoming 2025
Homecoming 2025 was an absolutely unforgettable night that reached new heights when Chris Carnahan ’00 stunned the crowd by skydiving onto the field with the American flag to deliver the game ball. That electric energy surged through the stands and onto the turf as our Lancers fought for a hard-earned 47–37 victory, providing the perfect end to a week overflowing with school spirit and celebration.
The evening also served as a prestigious stage to honor Ravin Rhodes ’17 and Samantha Nieto ’18, our 10th Battalion
Alumni Athletic Award honorees, who were recognized for their remarkable legacy in Lancer Athletics and their continued excellence at the collegiate level.
It was truly heartwarming to see generations of alumni from across the decades return to campus to swap stories, reconnect with old friends, and share in the joy of a community that remains as vibrant as ever. Thank you to everyone who came home to make this evening a landmark moment in our school's history!
ALUMNI SOCCER GAME
What a fantastic day we had at the Co-Ed Alumni Soccer Game on Saturday, December 28th! LASALLIAN MERGE ART WITH SERVICE TO REMAKE ALTADENA’S LOMA ALTA PARK AFTER EATON FIRE
By Carolyn Neuhausen, ’04
The Eaton fire destroyed not only homes but much of what made Altadena a unique foothill community, devastating its “third spaces,” public hubs - like parks - that are essential shared places for neighbors and communities to gather. For Lasallian classmates Ryan Burch ’04, an artist who works under the name @sel1Out, and Jess Miller (née Short) ’04, part of healing from their own personal experience of the fire was a desire to work in the Altadena community on a project to revitalize give back, blending their artistic abilities with volunteer service.
The Loma Alta Park project is not Ryan’s first foray into blending art, business and community philanthropy; he’d just wrapped up Painted Promises, a three-day pop up gallery and activities event that raised $10,000 for Altadena schools, when he learned about the project to revitalize a park on the west edge of Altadena, last April.
The task to revitalize Loma Alta Park was large in scale - Ryan would need to design an uplifting and accessible design to cover 5,000 square feet of wall, and coordinate materials and volunteers to execute his vision.
That’s where Ryan reached out to Jess, a commercial artist and principal of Jess Miller Draws, to help him with the project’s production elements. In working together, they bonded in the belief that beautifying spaces can help build community. The project also presented a way for them to live the LaSallian values that shaped their education - a sense of giving back to community and service to others.
“When the opportunity came up, [Jess] immediately came to mind because I knew she would bring both skill and care to the project. She also has strong ties to the community, which felt important for this particular moment,” Ryan explains.
For Jess, helping to remake the park wasn’t just a job, it was a deeply emotional first step on the path to healing. On the morning of January 8, Miller learned her home, her parents’ home and a number of family-owned properties burned to the
ground, along with entire swathes of the community she grew up in. The loss for her was personal and layered, as was the task of rebuilding what was lost.
“It was really great reconnecting with Ryan. It was meaningful to see how dedicated he’s been to rebuilding and supporting the Altadena community. There is something really powerful about collaborating with someone who shares that same history and connection to the area. It made the project feel even more personal,” Jess explained.
Both Ryan and Jess found special meaning in working in the communities that shaped their upbringing. “Many of the values that guide my work today were shaped early on by the people and environments around me. Being able to contribute something lasting to shared spaces feels like a full circle moment, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue doing that work,” Ryan added.
The gift of refurbishing and working with volunteers at Loma Alta Park allowed her to see a hopeful beginning where there had once been pain. “One of the things that has stood out most to me throughout this experience is the resilience of the Altadena community. Despite everything that was lost, people continue to show up for one another in really meaningful ways. Projects like the Loma Alta Park murals are a reminder that art can play a role in healing and rebuilding,” Jess explained.

THE LANCER CHALLENGE
La Salle ended fiscal year 2025 with an alumni giving participation rate of 7.4%. We are most grateful for the 569 Alumni donors who donated to their alma mater! Our goal this year is to reach 10% by June 30, 2025, and to see which graduating class comes out on top in the Lancer Challenge.
WHAT IS THE LANCER CHALLENGE?
A giving competition that challenges each class to increase the number of donors who contribute to La Salle over the fiscal year (July 1, 2024-June 30, 2025).
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Every gift matters. No gift is too small to count for your class. The competition is based on the number of alums from each class who give, not the dollar amount.
*All tax-deductible gifts made to La Salle will impact your class participation score
HOW DO YOU MAKE A GIFT?
There are several ways to make a gift and boost your class’ standing:
1. Give online at www.lasallehs.org/annualfund
2. Mail your gift in the envelope provided. Checks made payable to “La Salle College Prep”.
3. Call 626.696.4362 to make your gift over the phone.
IS THERE A PRIZE?
The Class with the highest number of donors at fiscal year-end (June 30th) will receive:
• Placement on the Lancer Challenge Championship Banner in the Gym
• Recognition in Lancer Magazine
• Bragging rights (and they are priceless!)
Class standings are updated regularly online at www.lasallehs.org/annualfund
CONGRATULATIONS
