The Month of Love

Ahh Valentine’s Day…that one day in the year that most single girls in the world dread. Everyone will be going out with their significant other while you are at home alone with the only guys you want to be with, which are none other than Ben & Jerry. Looking at social media is not a good move because the popular page on Instagram is going to be flooded with cute couples, and date night photos. Just by these few statements it is clear that most girls have established that Valentine’s Day is really Forever Alone Day in the single world. We can definitely change this though because Valentine’s Day is a day for expressing love… right? Why can’t Valentine’s Day be spent with a few best friends, some choice food, and a great romantic comedy movie? Here at Eléonore Magazine we thought that we were the only individual’s with this mindset, but we had a chat with our cover girl Aly Hartman and she seems to be agreeing with us on this statement. Aly told us that she thinks the whole “social construct of Valentine’s Day is pretty messed up because it is such a clean cut event.”

Wow! We could not have put it in words better ourselves. As young single women we need to recognize that it is not the end of the world if that cute guy down the hall did not ask us out. It is okay to be single, and quite frankly if you are not having fun being single then you are not doing it right. Instead of mooning over a certain someone and praying that they ask you out maybe you should focus on the people that you love and cherish in your life. This could mean that you should get a few friends over and celebrate how much you care about one another and reminisce about all of the crazy events that you have encountered. Buy your friends a box of chocolate and order a pizza. Relax and enjoy the place that you are in on your journey of life. Do not worry about what others think about you and your relationship status. You are exactly where you need to be, and your Valentine’s Day is what you make of it. Aly believes that Valentine’s Day “should be open to the interpretation for each individual.” We really feel that this statement is significant because society has made us to think that the entirety of the holiday is only for people in relationships when in reality Valentine’s Day is meant to be a day of expressing love, which is something that Aly thinks everyone should do “every day.” Let us all just stop getting caught up in chocolates, roses, and candy grams.

Yes, they are all very sweet gestures, especially if you are receiving them from someone, but do not let it make or break your Valentine’s Day. If you are not receiving then maybe you should be the individual that is giving to your family and friends because the true heart of Valentine’s Day is when a single individual takes that special day and makes it special for every single person around them.

Five Fab February Fashions

Outfit #1: This outfit is one of my favorites and

I love the earthy tones in it! My Anne Klein jacket was my great grandmother’s and is made of a gorgeous, leather material. It gives off a sweet, vintage vibe. This outfit also contains a few big trends that have been everywhere lately: turtlenecks and denim skirts! Both my white turtleneck and skirt are from Forever 21. To give a subtle pop of color, I added my forest green, high-top converse to the mix.

Outfit #2: I absolutely love

this look for a fancier occasion.

This maroon baby doll dress, made of an eye-catching suede material, is from American Apparel and these gold heels from Steve Madden instantly jazz up any look. I would wear this duo on a night out with my friends or even on a Valentine’s Day date. But let’s be real ladies, I am single that will not happen anytime soon.

Outfit #3: I have grown quite a collection of baseball hats because they not only give a sporty look, but are also perfect for a bad hair day! This one pictured is a Chicago Cubs baseball hat. My light blue top I am wearing is from Forever 21 and my highwaisted denim shorts are from the Rose Bowl Flea Market. They are vintage Levi’s and I bought them for only $5.00! (FUN FACT: This particular flea market has a section of many high-waisted shorts in various sizes and bins of plaid shirts, all for only $5.00 each. I would definitely check it out if I were you and the flea market is a fun place to go during the weekend…) Anyways, as my choice of shoes, I have on my white high-top converse.

Outfit #4: In outfit number four, I am wearing mom jeans from Topshop that I love so so so much! Compared to boyfriend jeans, mom jeans are usually more high-waisted and look like they were made in the '90s. Next, I have on a girly, plaid button-down by Levi’s. To make my outfit come together, I slipped on my cotton, mary jane flats from Urban Outfitters. They are always on sale every time I check their website so I have these shoes in different colors. All the splashes of pink make this outfit girly and put together. *The purse I used with all my outfits is called the “Le Pliage” backpack by Longchamp. It is a bit on the expensive side, but if you are looking for a backpack-purse that is effortlessly timeless, this is the one for you!

Outfit #5: This look con-

tains two fashion staples I hold dear to my heart: stripes, and a nice pair of jeans! My top is very reasonably priced from Forever 21, it would also look great with some white denim jeans. My awesome boyfriend jeans from American Eagle are called the “Tomgirl Jean�. I strongly suggest you add a pair of boyfriend jeans to your clothing collection because they are not only fashionable, but also super duper comfortable. My shoes with this outfit are classic, white high-top converse.

Knock out dry winter skin with

The first thing on my face cleansing list is my daily cleanser. This is a foaming wash that helps prevent breakouts, and it is by the lovely Dermalogica. I use this every morning when I wake up, and every night before I go to sleep. The bottle lasts me about 3- 4 months depending on how much I use. I purchased this at ULTA, and it is part of the teen skin care line. I absolutely love the way this makes my skin feel. It is very soothing, and refreshing!

In the morning I use both of these moisturizes after using my cleanser to not only make my skin soft, but to protect my skin from the sun since it has SPF. The Matte Moisturizer is to help control oily areas like your nose and forehead to help give you a matte finish for a fresh face all day. After applying the Matte Moisturizer I then use my Daytime Treatment to help prevent breakouts during the day. Both of these moisturizers are a part of the Dermalogica teen skin care line.

Skin Care Routine: Winter into Spring

the help of our skin care routine At night after using my cleanser I use my delightful Overnight Treatment. This helps prevent breakouts that might happen during the night. It is very light and soothing on the skin. This product is again a part of the Dermologica teen skin care line.

Exfoliation time! This is actually my favorite product in my entire skin care routine. The Clear Difference Purifying Exfoliating Mask by the ever so lovely Estēe Lauder. This literally makes my pores feel free, open, and clean. It got rid of all of my dark spots, uneven skin tone, and all of the horrible white heads on my face. It is just an overall great product. I use this twice a week, (Tuesday’s and Thursday’s). I learned the hard way that you need to be very careful when exfoliating your face. On average, you should exfoliate 2-3 times a week depending on the product. I purchased this at Macy’s in their skin care department, but it is also available at Sephora and Amazon.

The smaller container is the Resilience Lift for your under eyes, and it basically helps make your eyes look brighter, and less tired. The larger container is the Resilience Lift for your entire face, and it is supposed to defy wrinkles, and to remove harsh lines. I use both of these products on the days that I exfoliate.

On the weekends when I feel like giving my face a little treat I use the Cosmetic Warrior face mask

by Lush. The ingredients include garlic, tea tree, and kaolin. It really does just relax and calm your face after a stressful, and busy week.

This is everything in our skin care routine.

I hope this helped some of you guys and maybe even showed you some new products to add to your skin care routine.

Whether you’re on the go, or at school these cleansing towels are great if you feel like you need to wash your face, but you don’t have the convenience of having your cleanser and a sink to rinse your face. It really does make you feel fresh, and ready to go as if you actually washed your face

Neosporin! This is so extremely important. I know that feeling when you have a pimple on your face, and you just want to pop it and get rid of it! Though we all know we aren’t supposed to do this we do it anyways. If you ever do pop that pimple do not just leave it alone because you are leaving it open to get infected, or to spread more acne. Instead apply a generous amount of Neosporin, before bed, or if you are just relaxing at home, and you will be good to take on the world!

Sweetie Pies

What you need: Two pie crusts Strawberry preserves (or any other red fruit) Milk Heart cookie cutter Large granulated sugar (colored works best) Steps to perfection: 1. Preheat the oven to 375 ยบ.

2. Roll out one of the pie crusts and cut out heart shapes using the cookie cutter.

3. Place the hearts on a paper lined baking sheet.

4. Place a spoonful of preserves onto the center of each heart.

5. Repeat the cutting with the second pie crust and place each heart on top of a heart with preserves.

6. Seal the edges of the hearts using a fork.

7. Brush the tops of the hearts with milk and sprinkle with sugar.

8. Bake for 10 minutes or until fully cooked.

9. Enjoy!!

Milk and Kisses For a quick dessert, stick to the classic favorite, milk and cookies!

Tip: With sugar cookie dough, the combinations are endless. With food coloring, you can turn some cookies red or pink or add candy and sprinkles for a festive look!

Valentine’s Day: Expectations versus Reality As someone with an avid love for film, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise that my Netflix watch history surmounts to hours of indiscriminate procrastination. I can tell you off the bat that those hours do not go to waste.

From classic films by “Master of Suspense” Alfred Hitchcock to romantic comedies like Legally Blonde starring Reese Witherspoon and Luke Wilson, I’m offered a wide range of material to digest. I’ve learned that romantic entanglements can be psycho, notorious, or merely involve the wrong man. Typically, I’ve found, it’s a combination of the three. However, they can also drive stereotypical “dumb blonde” Valley girls like Elle Woods to break social stereotypes, and re-assess their outlooks on love.

With that in mind, where do we find the realistic balance between the two?

Obviously, we don’t hear many stories of nomadic, cross-dressing murderers like Norman Bates and their creepy obsessions with unsuspecting blondes like Marion Crane in the headlines. Unfortunately, we don’t hear many inspiring transformation stories like protagonist Elle Woods’ either. In that sense, how realistic is our perception of love?

Marion Crane and Elle Woods ultimately had the most potential when independent. Marion Crane left her old life behind seeking new opportunity for herself, and while she did so while on the run from the law, her only fatal flaw was in underestimating appearances. Elle Woods’ flaw was in underestimating her potential, but later gained a better outlook of herself.

Elle Woods, in a state of heartbreak, refused for her relationship with golden child Warner Huntington III to be so short-lived. In the words of Beyoncé, “if you like it then you should have put a ring on it”. And so, in response to her predicament, Elle chose to do exactly that. Except, in her case, it was a 179 LSAT score and a Harvard class ring that ensured her success.

In the long run, Elle’s success had far less to do with Carter, and had far more to do with a newfound faith in herself. Elle proved to her preppy Harvard peers that success could be found in even the pinkest and frilliest of packages, and to never underestimate the power of the “bend and snap” technique. So, while love may have inspired her to attend law school, it was instead through incredible ambition and the know-how of a Cosmo girl that Elle broke the “dumb blonde” stereotype, paving a road for individual success.

Elle realized Carter would never view her past appearances, and found true love with Emmett Richmond, who she learned saw her more for her unquestionable potential and lovable personality. While Carter may have had the tradtional Valentine’s Day allure, complete with a pretty exterior and a diamond ring to back it, sometimes the best kinds of valentines come in humbler packages. Sometimes it is a matter of the right man over the wrong one. Most of all, it’s a matter of expectation versus reality. Once we accept our reality, we can decide what to make of it.

Inspiration and empowerment often go hand in hand. But it is tricky to try and narrow down what exactly inspires and empowers oneself. As an individual, I tend to find myself inspired by simplistic displays of beauty and power. A flower in full bloom, or a storm in full force. Inspiration is a natural occurrence, and once inspired we can become empowered. I see the aesthetic and might of the world around me and feel empowered myself. My eyes are opened to my position in the world, and the things I can to do better myself and those around me. Embrace your inspirations, as they can come from anywhere, and use them to empower yourself.

Every girl has a massive potential that society oppresses through ads, magazines, and commercials that are broadcasted throughout the world.

At Eléonore Magazine, we hope to give girls at La Salle, and eventually throughout Pasadena and farther, the confidence to be who they are in any obstacle they may encounter. Women should not have to feel pressured into fitting a “standard”, because no one is truly the same. We all have our own unique abilities and personalities, and society attempts to put us all in a box.

Other magazines and advertisements start trends that young girls who are trying to find themselves, feel they need to meet in order to be accepted.

Through our own magazine, we are hoping to break the trend, and show each and every girl that she has the potential to be the woman that she wants to be, and there is no need to fit into a standard because society says so.

One of the main goals of Eléonore Magazine is to give young girls the confidence they need to make a difference in their community and in themselves. We aspire to empower young girls and women alike to accept themselves, despite the “perfect image” that society implants in our minds.

Along with women being oppressed through body image and how they should look, they are also discriminated against and prevented to being truly equal in relation to other members of society. There is an extreme lack of women representation in the workforce and in our government. The women that do work in the government and in other professions, are not taken as seriously as their male counterparts, and are prevented from earning the same wages.

Eléonore hopes to inspire young women to go out into the world and fight for true equality.

Naturally Pretty in Pink by: Michelle Encinas

The perfect nail design for a fun but natural pink look! This design will give your nails a little glam without being overwhelming.

1. First, you must diligently clean your nails before beginning.

2. Second, take the first color and apply the first coat of the nude pink as seen in the picture.

3. Third, while that first coat dries, apply the pink to the remaining nails.

4. Fourth, you can apply another coat, this may vary depending on how you prefer your nails.

5. Fifth, while the nails are still damp, place the stone on the paint and cover with the glue.

6. Sixth, when the nails are almost completely dry, use the nail paint pen to draw your simple heart.

7. Seventh, now you can apply your clear coat. Wait to dry before doing any activities. Now you have the perfect nails!

I got this idea by mixing two designs I have seen before with a little modification to make it sweet and simple.

Makeup in My Eyes I believe Bobbi Brown said it best when acknowledging, “I believe that all women are pretty without make up [and] with the right makeup, can be pretty powerful.” Though makeup is not for everyone, it is a form of empowerment for many people. It has the ability to instantly change your outward appearance as well as your demeanor not only towards others, but yourself as well. Cosmetics have an enchanting type of magic that make you into your own fairy godmother. There’s a certain feeling you experience when doing your makeup, and also when looking at yourself in the mirror after its done. It’s hard to describe, and I may sound crazy writing this, but I personally, feel sort of like my own superhero. It is as if someone waved their magic wand over me and granted me a new air of confidence. There’s a certain “je ne sais quoi” about it all. When I am going through the process of doing my makeup, it is a time for me to be alone with myself. I try not to

focus so much on my imperfections, but more on what I want to shine through, and how I want the world to see me that day.

Makeup is an art form. It is a way to express yourself in a unique way. It’s a way to enhance your natural beauty while also being able to try something new or different and change up your look. “Makeup is a powerful way to effectively reveal something unique about your inner self” (James Kaliardos). For some reason, there is this preconceived idea that people who wear makeup are insecure, or that they are hiding behind it. I see makeup more as an asset that can lift someone up, rather than something that allows them to hide.

I believe that you can be beautiful both with and without makeup. The most amazing part is that you get to choose how you are seen. Even if you do choose to “hide” behind makeup, you can never truly mask who you are, “beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical.” (Sophia Loren) We should not measure beauty on physical appearance but rather on the emotional make-up of a person.

The truth is that you never have to wear makeup. It is not the end all, be all, nor is it a requirement for beauty. You are, in fact, your own beauty. Makeup will never change who you are on the inside. Though if you want to reflect something on the outside that is sometimes harder to see because it is hidden within, than do not be afraid to be bold and rouge your lips. You should, however, remember that “beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself” (Coco Chanel). If makeup is your weapon of choice, be sure to wield

A Cute Bohemian Braided Heart Hairstyle That You Will Love

There are many beautiful and fun hairstyles out there for the month of February, but today we are going to show you a bohemian inspired hairstyle that you can customize to your liking. Below are step-by-step directions that will help you achieve a cute new hairstyle.

Half-Up Heart Braid • What you’ll need: Brush Bobby pins Hair elastics Water sprayer (optional) NOTE: This hairstyle can be worn multiple ways. The first step has been split into two separate steps for the different styles.

1. (1a) To start, section of the top half of your hair. The split into two sides. If you are going to do a thin braid on the side, ignore this step.

(1b) This step is only for the side braid option. Take two small, even amounts of hair, from the side of your head.

2. (The following steps are for both variations) Braid both the right and left sides with a simple three strand braid then tie both off with an elastic.

3. (Start with braid of preference). Twist the braid towards the inside then wrap it up and around so the end points inside. Once you’ve adjusted it, bobby pin the braid in place. Repeat for the opposite side.

4. Use an elastic to tie the braid ends together.

5. If the halves look too separate you can pin them together to create a more cohesive look 6. Finally, either leave the look the way it is or finish off with a ribbon or bow! For the hairstyle shown in the pictures we decided to add a simple three strand braid to the side of the head for a boho vibe.

To name a few fun facts about myself: I have been acting and modeling since I was nine years old, one of my favorite moments from working in the industry was meeting Ellen DeGeneres, and my favorite pastime is making videos on my Youtube channel- Rebecca Lynne. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue of Eléonore magazine!

Annika Suderberg My name is Annika and I am a freshmen at La Salle. I joined this magazine because I thought it would be a good chance to meet people who shared similar interests with me. I am very interests in fashion, especially costume design. I love watching movies from the 1950s, partly just to see the gorgeous costumes.

Aside from my interest in fashion, I am a swimmer and on the Rose Bowl Aquatics swim team.

Ryan Pizante At La Salle, I participate in a wide range of clubs from Gender Equality to Speech and Debate. Some of my interests include photography, writing, compiling playlists, painting, activism, and reading. I’ve always felt I had a keen eye for fashion and trending styles, which may explain my obsession with sketching and binge-watching past seasons of Project Runway. I love going to galleries, and noting different artistic influences and styles. Film, above all, is my favorite form of media. Some favorite movies of mine include Amélie, Pulp Fiction, Pan’s Labyrinth, Practical Magic, and Valley of the Dolls. I also love the TV shows Twin Peaks, Murder She Wrote, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Collectively, I love art in all its respected forms, and hope to be able to culminate and produce it through this magazine. Anyone who truly knows me can vouch for my obsession with astrology. When I’m not reading, I’m most likely researching a natal chart or daily horoscope. I look forward to being a contributor to Eléonore, and am excited to see what this year brings.

Hannah Alviso I find a lot of inspiration in people I know such as my dad. He is one of my biggest inspirations. My dad inspired me to take up music, such as playing guitar and singing and also having the determination to learn to play an instrument. Because my dad has always had a perpencity to pick up a new hobby, I’ve applied that to my life and took up photography and video editing. I hope the students at La Salle find that kind of determination to learn what they want to learn and do what they want to do .

Samantha Knapp’ Hi! My name is Samantha Knapp. Here at La Salle, I am a part of the LTV crew and I run with the cross country team. My hobbies include photography, reading, and video editing. I have a passion for history and classic movies. I love cuddling up in a blanket on a rainy day with a cup of tea, reading a good book. My alltime favorite series is the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. When I am not reading, I love to binge-watch T.V. shows on Netflix. Some of my favorite shows are Doctor Who, Reign, and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

Another thing you should know about me is that I am a HUGE Star Wars fan. I am very excited to write book reviews and introduce you to some of my favorite fantastical worlds.

Katerina Esquivel Hello! I’m Katerina. I love anything having to do with photography and film, as well as with beauty and fashion. Raquel Ruiz Hi, my name is Raquel and I am a junior at La Salle. I play water polo and am on the swim team. I am also the captain of the famous La Salle equestrian team (there are three of us now!). I am a part of Student Life, Key Club, LTV, and I am a student ambassador. My favorite subjects in school are history and math and my favorite color is purple. I am so excited to be a part of the Eléonore mag team!

Elizabeth Ayala Hey! I am Elizabeth, founder and editor-in-chief of Eléonore magazine. I am a quirky girl who loves all things fashion. I love buying clothes, styling people, accessorizing with jewelery, doing fashion illustration, and experimenting with makeup. I believe that fashion and beauty products do not hide a woman from her true self, but accentuate everything good about her. There is something about having your own fashion sense and style that gives an individual freedom, and a better understanding of who they are as a person. I am not afraid to be whom I am without my fashion identity, but I feel that it helps me be the best version of myself.
