Hello! Well, we have arrived to the middle of summer. (Already!) I hope that all of you and your children are enjoying your summer so far. Whether it is a product of my having grown up near the beach or having worked in schools for my professional life, summer has always been and remains my favorite season. Fall, winter, and spring all have their beauty and things to enjoy, but I love the long days, outdoor concerts, barbecues, travel and adventure that summer always brings.

Summer Packet But summer will come to an end and your students will be heading back to school before you know it. On July 7, we mailed a packet of information home for each student. Please carefully read the contents and be sure to complete the online information process with SchoolAdmin by the due date of August 4. Meeting this deadline is important to making sure the school year gets off to a good start and that we have the important information about your student should we need it in an emergency. THANK YOU in advance for your cooperation on this matter.

Start of School Schedule The start of the school year for NEW students (9th grade and transfers) is Monday, August 14. The day will include an orientation program from 9:00am to 2:00pm that will be directed by students and adults from our Student Life Team. Students may come in free dress and do not need to bring any textbooks; lunch will be provided. That same evening, we will also host a very informative New Parent Orientation Program beginning at 6:30pm in the Dining Hall. (*Please note that the date for this event was incorrect in the July 7th mailing; it will take place Monday, August 14.) I strongly encourage the parents of our new students, both freshmen and transfers, to attend this activity. As you know, the transition to high school is a big one; the goal of this evening is to give you as parents the tools and information to help your student navigate that change successfully.

In anticipation of our meeting, you can also access our New Parent Survival Guide at www.lasallehs. org under the Parents tab.

On the next day, Tuesday, August 15, we will have our Student Information Day. All students will be on campus this day by grade level. The day will include verification of online forms, finance office clearance, class meetings, and ID pictures and cards. Please see the letter that was sent on July 7 for reporting times. It is a Dress Uniform Day for all students.

Wednesday, August 16, is our official first day of school. The entire student body will gather for its first day of classes beginning at 8:00am – textbooks and full uniforms are required. This day is a normal A day, with dismissal at 2:25pm. If you have not already done so, please begin buying your textbooks soon. The Textbook List was mailed in the July 7 mailing and is also available on our website under the Academics tab.

The Lancer Armory is available for approved school locks, PE clothing and school ties. In addition, the Armory contains other La Salle apparel for you to cheer on our Lancers throughout the year.

NEW SPACE FOR CREATIVE IDEAS

Innovation and Design Lab

As your children return to school, there will be some notable changes. Our most exciting change is the creation of our new STEAM Lab on the second floor. As most of you know, STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. La Salle has been researching and planning for a STEAM program for a few years and last spring we took a major step in implementation by having our first STEAM class. Innovation and Design Lab (ID Lab for short) was offered as an abbreviated 8th period, second semester class and team taught by Mr. Chang, Dr. Lucas, Mr. Magluyan, and Dr. Rynerson. The course garnered great student interest and enthusiasm and culminated with a “car show” where students displayed the propulsion projects they had worked on throughout the course. This year, we are taking an even greater leap by offering ID lab as full year course during the school day and as an 8th period class.

With the implementation of this new course we need a new space for it, as well as many tools and pieces of equipment. As such, Room 205 is being converted into a STEAM lab. As one room is not enough space for the exciting projects our students will be working on, the wall between room 205 and the library is being torn down and the lab will expand into the Blakeslee Library. Thank you to all of you who donated at last year’s auction or throughout the years to this project. I am very excited about seeing this vision come to life this year and for it to be the first part of our re-imagining the library space to better fit our students’ needs.

STEAM Personnel

With all of this going on, I am happy to share that Dr. Rynerson is taking on the role of STEAM Program Director. Aside from teaching our STEAM courses, he will also be overseeing the creation and care of the lab space, working with faculty to help them apply STEAM concepts in their courses, and looking at opportunities to share the excitement of STEAM at La Salle with prospective students.

A GREAT NEW YEAR IS AHEAD

In addition to Dr. Rynerson, two other teachers are stepping up to new roles this year: Mr. Magluyan will be the new chairperson of the Technology and Engineering Department (formerly Computer Science Department) and Mrs. Holyfield will be the new Science Department Chairperson.

Leadership Team Changes

We are also going to have changes in our leadership team. Mr. Birr and Mr. Salmingo have both taken jobs that will enable them to be closer to home. Although I am saddened to lose both of these wonderful men who have been terrific school leaders and supports to me over my first year at La Salle, I am excited for them and their families as they continue on these new paths in their careers. These positions have not been filled at this time, but I will share with the school community as soon as we have found our interim dean of students and interim assistant principal.

As we look forward to the beginning of another school year, I hope that you and your students are excited about the possibilities that the year holds. Beginning my second year, I am most looking forward to beginning the year already knowing the students! The students after all are the reason all of us who work at La Salle do what we do. The faculty and staff at La Salle are here to help students learn and grow, and I will do my best to assure that they are ready, willing and able to work with your son/ daughter in nurturing them to young adulthood.

A parent or guardian must call before 8:00am the day of the absence to notify the School if a student will be absent or tardy, or if the student needs to leave school early for an appointment. Please state student's name, date, time, and reason for the absence.

On return to School, the student must stop by the reception desk prior to 8:00am with a note from the parents or guardians stating the reason for the absence.

Notification of any planned absences, (college visits, etc.), must be in writing prior to the absence, given to the attendance office and approved by the Dean of Students.

La Salle Matters Not long ago, we received a wonderful email from Duke Banks ’64, which was triggered by his receipt of the School’s annual Christmas card. The card featured a portrait of Brother Solomon Leclercq, our newest Lasallian saint, with an explanation of how his canonization was approved by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints because of a miraculous cure of a young girl in Caracas, Venezuela. It seemed altogether a bizarre connection between an obscure 18th Century Christian Brother who was martyred BE WITNESS TO CHRIST WHATEVER THE COST

who was educated by the Christian Brothers, gave the statue pride of place in the Sanctuary and, upon its installation, declared: “We receive Blessed Solomon, and we will yet make him a Saint.”

It only took a mere 15 years for that to happen.1 I dwell on this wonderful story because, it seems to me that as the English Romantic Poet, William Wordsworth, penned at the time of the Industrial Revolution: The world is too much with us; late and soon, Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers

in the French Revolution and the Catholic community in Caracas who had been venerating a statue of Brother Solomon over the course of the last 50 years. It turns out Duke’s extended Venezuelan family (he was born in Caracas with Venezuelan heritage on both sides) was intimately connected to educational institutions sponsored by the Christian Brothers in Central America.

Somewhere, along the way, a statue of Brother Solomon ended up in a chapel serving residents living on the outskirts of Caracas. The Chaplain,

His critique, back then (and, perhaps, applicable to this modern-day moment) was described by one critic as: “the decadent material cynicism of the time.” The current news cycle is rife with apocalyptic stories of political intrigue, charges of cronyism and a never-ending (and exhausting) Washington battle over how to provide health care for 22 million people who would not, ordinarily, have a reasonable opportunity to access it. It is at times like this that I conclude that “the world is too much with us.”

I suppose it was ever thus. After all, Saint Solomon was confronted by the awful choice of denying his vowed commitment to the Church and losing his life – and that was over 200 years ago! I think we can learn something from Brother Solomon’s steadfast commitment to his vows.

We may be fortunate not to have to consider the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our life’s commitments, but we aren’t excused – any more than Saint Solomon was – from living our lives with dignity and integrity. Here is what Brother Robert Schieler, the Superior General of the Christian Brothers had to say about Brother Solomon at the time of his canonization:

“Brother Solomon gives us a lesson of great integrity and loyalty with the options taken, even at the sacrifice of his life.

And God only knows how necessary it is today to live with integrity and loyalty in a world where it has become normal to trample rights unscrupulously against our conscience, against others and against God, for mere interest and profit...

Secondly, there is another message that Brother Solomon proposes to Christian teachers and consecrated persons in general: to be witnesses of Christ, whatever the cost. The world today needs more than ever loyalty, consistency, justice, generosity, altruism even at the cost of your own life."

This last sentence captures, for me, the essential challenge this Lasallian school in Pasadena must face every day if we are to be faithful to the principles of our founding Brothers as well as those in a long line of Brothers who preceded and followed Saint Solomon: to exercise loyalty, consistency, justice, generosity and altruism even when the world around us appears to have abandoned them.

As we begin a new year at La Salle (my 19th!), let’s pray that the courage and integrity that inspired Saint Solomon will enable all of us who are responsible for the students entrusted to our care to demonstrate a similar, quiet heroism in the midst of a world that sometimes seems to have lost its bearings. After 60 years of fidelity to the principles of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the Founder of the Christian Brothers, I think this Lasallian community is up to the challenge.

A New Journey Begins Greetings and welcome to another wonderful year at La Salle High School. As a first year PTA President, I am extremely pleased to welcome our freshmen parents and students, including our returning student body. New parents and their young adults bring with them new ideas, enthusiasm, and an eagerness for learning that will strengthen all who they interact with. We are blessed to have strong upperclassmen and women, along with their equally talented parents, to ensure the new environment they find themselves in is supportive to the goal of a successful year for all. It is truly my belief that this school has a faculty to be proud of, and with the combined talents of these teachers, students, and parents, we can look forward to the most spectacular, exciting and successful year ahead.

We want to take this opportunity to once more welcome the parents of the Class of 2021 and to those families who are new at La Salle for the first time as they begin their amazing journey, with all the possibilities at La Salle. The Parent Association is again hosting its annual Freshman Parent and New Parent Orientation program, which is designed to provide incoming parents the opportunity to better familiar themselves with life at La Salle. All Freshman parents and new parents to La Salle, should mark their calendars for Monday, August 14, 2017, at 6:30pm in the Dining Hall. You will learn, through a variety of information sessions, the details of what we are all about, and we will address key aspects of life at La Salle from both parents and student perspective.

Additionally, one of the ways we support our students and ensure the success of each and every one of them is for parents to get involved. There are so many activities and ways parents can volunteer and give of their valuable time. You will see the students truly appreciate your efforts.

Your child’s education and success is not a spectator sport and your involvement is crucial!

Following the orientation program, we will offer a time for socializing and provide parents an opportunity to purchase any last minute student apparel, and locker items from the Lancer Armory.

Additional details about the Freshman Parent and New Parent Orientation and PALS (Parents At La Salle) have been and will be mailed to you. In the meantime, be sure to make your calendars for this very special event.

So, in closing, I look forward with anticipation to the year ahead and working with the students, parents and teachers of La Salle High School. GO LANCERS! “For each one of us, there is only one thing necessary: to fulfill our own destiny, according to God’s will, to be what God wants us to be.”

Siracusa Receives Pasadena Police Officers Association Scholarship Pasadena Police Officers Association (PPOA) recognized senior Abigail Siracusa, at its Annual Scholarship Awards on July 25th at the Pasadena Police Headquarters. PPOA is proud of Abigail, who will be attending Methodist University in North Carolina.

Abigail also received an athletic Scholarship for tennis at Methodist University Since 1989, the PPOA has awarded scholarships to deserving local graduating high school students pursuing a college education for whom financial assistance would help further their educational goals.

This year’s recipients, like those before them, have shown a strong dedication to both their education and to serving their community. The members of the PPOA are honored to support Abigail.

The PPOA Scholarship Awards Program grew out of the desire and commitment to support the community we serve. Since its inception, over $60,000 has been given through the Awards Program to 71 outstanding students. Funds for the program are raised through Chili Cook-offs, Charity Runs, individual donations, and community sponsorships. Contributions are always welcomed and appreciated. The PPOA is especially proud of a significant increase in its charitable giving and involvement in the community during the last two years.

The members enjoy stepping up for our community’s youth, and they remain dedicated and committed to working hard to make our great City an even better place to live, work, and visit.

Visual & Performing Arts

The Visual and Performing Arts Department has gone through a transformation. It is now known as the Department of Arts and Media. Since the department is many faceted and media is an important part of the arts department across all disciplines, the name change moves the department into the 21st century. Media will encapsulate film, computer animation, game design, broadcast journalism, and media in any form that students are engaged to research and develop.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

The department can proudly count 2016-2017 as a very successful school year. Students representing a majority of our arts disciplines will be matriculating into top name universities. Max DoVale will be attending Loyola University New Orleans to continue his jazz piano studies; Issac Caldas, percussion, was granted the prestigious Herb Albert Jazz Studies award and scholarship by UCLA; Angelo Le Roi, guitarist, will be attending the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston.

Ms. Glenda Smith has proven to be a tremendous asset to the instrumental program. Her leadership has resulted in tremendous growth in the string program as well as the development of student composers.

Professional mentoring across all instruments raised the level of musical skill resulting in excellence in performance throughout the year

All ensembles exceeded expectations: students played above their abilities and learned over 40 pieces of music during the year.

A record number (22) prospective students auditioned for advanced band, string ensemble, jazz for the incoming class of 2020.

Visual Art had success in the AP Art class. A great majority of Advanced Placement art students received high scores. Lars Krystad and Alex Xu represent just two of our up and coming artists who graduated this past school year.

Through the work and dedication of Mrs. Kate Williams, a chapter of the National Arts Honor Society will be an important part of student art development. The Arts Society will be showcasing and presenting throughout the school year and will spearhead our Global Arts Initiative.

We celebrate the accomplishment of student Claire Ganguin who received a scholarship from the Joffrey Ballet Training Program in New York City for the summer, with the option to continue throughout the school year.

The Department of Arts and Media will be expanding as faculty and the Student Arts Honor Society begin plans for a fall arts preview day in October and in the spring of 2018.

The changes are many for all students at La Salle. The 2017-2018 school year will be exciting and rewarding. Throughout all disciplines, Art, Dance, Film, Media, Broadcast Journalism, Theatre/

Drama, Instrumental Music and Vocal Music, the opportunities are available to all students as they find their creative voice. Check the class schedule for 8th period offerings of Broadcast Journalism, Dance 2 and Dance 2 Honors.

I ask that you take full advantage of the creative results of our innovative students in the arts.

Take in a concert, come to an art showing, enjoy a dance concert, be involved in student music performances and theatre events.

Camp College – Second Offering

For those who missed the first Camp College session in June, the College Center will be offering another session of this course from Monday, August 7 to Wednesday, August 9.

The purpose of this three-day seminar is to provide students with an overview of the college admissions process and provide hands-on instruction regarding organizational systems and the college essays. Most students will have one essay completed and have drafts of a second and a third essay by the end of the course.

Registration is available online at the La Salle website under Academics/Summer Programs.

Forms are also available in the College Center. Non-La Salle students are welcome to attend. Please contact your college counselor if you have questions.

Please remember to use Family Connection on Naviance. Family Connection is a web-based application that offers comprehensive information to help you and your student to make decisions about colleges and careers. Family Connection is linked to Naviance, which is the system our College Center uses to track, analyze and report data, such as college admissions results, that is specific to La Salle. This is invaluable information for your college planning.

Family Connection will allow your student to: ● Keep track of the process – Build a resume, complete online surveys that indicate careers/colleges based on the student’s interests, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges ● Research colleges – Compare GPA, ACT/ SAT scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted in the past ● Sign up for college visits – Find out which colleges are visiting our school and sign up to attend those sessions

The one-onone senior college meeting will be scheduled according to the receipt date of the ‘Senior College Planning Survey’. In other words, first come-first served basis.

News for Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Parents

The following standardized tests will be administered on Wednesday, October 11: Freshmen and Sophomores will take the PreACT, Juniors will be taking the PSAT

The PreACT helps us track how our students perform over time and helps them prepare for the ACT. Meanwhile, the PSAT (preliminary SAT) provides firsthand practice for the SAT.

All juniors will be required to take the ACT this coming spring on Saturday, February 10, 2018. La Salle High School is an ACT test center for this date. All students will register for the test during the school day, so there is no action required from your end.

Honor Societies and CSF Registration

If your junior and/or senior student is eligible for membership in the National Honor Society (NHS), the California Scholarship Federation (CSF), and/or the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) please remind him or her to register.

The deadline to register for CSF, NHS and SNHS is August 25.

Please note, in order to wear the CSF cord for graduation, the student must be a member of CSF for four or more semesters, with at least one of the semesters during the senior year. In order to wear the NHS cord, the student must be an active member of NHS for at least three semesters.

The premier annual giving society is the President’s Circle, established in 2011 which includes New Parent Giving Pledges and all cash deductible gifts of $2,500 or more per fiscal year (July 1 thru June30).

The President’s Circle succeeds the Crystal Circle (New Parents Parent Giving Pledges and all cash deductible gifts between $1,000 and $2,499) as La Salle’s preeminent annual gift society.

President’s Circle and Crystal Circle members are recognized on a donor wall in prominent display at the School and in the Annual Report.

The requirement for wearing the SNHS cord is more complicated as it is determined by how many Honors and AP Science courses the student has taken and the grades earned in those classes.

As for the Hispanic Honor Society’s (HHS), the deadline to apply is in December. To wear the red sash at graduation, the student must be enrolled in Spanish 3 or higher with a minimum of three semesters of Spanish language studies.

For the National Art Honor Society (NAHS), to wear cords at graduation, the student must be an active member for at least one year.

City of Pasadena and La Salle Parking Laws The following rules and guidelines have been established by the administration and the Pasadena Police Department for the safety of your children.

Parents may drop off students in front of the gym and school in the designated curb side “drop off” lane. They may also drive into the school parking lot on Sierra Madre Boulevard entering the parking lot using the second gate west of the gym and then exit as indicated. There is no parking in front of the Sierra Madre Boulevard school parking lot from 7:00am to 4:00pm on school days. There is a 2 hour parking area in front of the gym and school from 9:00am to 9:00pm.The City has provided an additional dropoff zone going south on Michillinda Avenue, just north of the School’s driveway. This is for immediate drop-off only and is indicated as such. Both La Salle and the City are very concerned by the ongoing double, (and at times, triple) parking by parents during drop-off on Sierra Madre Boulevard. This is not only illegal, but extremely unsafe.

The City will continue to enforce a no-left-turn policy for northbound Michillinda Avenue traffic onto Canfield Road and Landfair Road, as well as a no-right-turn policy for southbound traffic on Michillinda Avenue onto Canfield and Landfair. This policy is in effect from 7:00am to 8:00am, Monday through Friday.

Parents are also reminded that there is ABSOLUTELY NO STUDENT DROP-OFF IN THE LOWER FACULTY PARKING LOT. Pulling into this lot creates a very dangerous back-up of cars in the oncoming traffic lanes.

The School also reminds our driving students that there is additional parking in the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church parking lot as they should not park their cars on residential streets such as Canfield Road. Parents should make use of the Sierra Madre Boulevard lot to pick up students at the end of the school day.

We expect our parents and students to adhere to these policies and regulations. They will be enforced by the Pasadena Police Department. Contact the Dean of Students at 626.696.4360 if you have any concerns about these procedures.
