In the past few year s, technology and science have been developing fast. They ar e changing the w or ld now and w ill definitely later. All good developm ents also have their cons. Rather than sit dow n and w ait for the futur e to happen, w e tr y to pr edict the futur e. It is better to have an idea of the futur e than stepping into an unknow n m aze w ith no sense of dir ection. The m eaning of sm ar t in this context is the technology being

im plem ented to m ake ever ything r un sm oother.

Apar t fr om efficiency, ther e is also the need to be a connection betw een the gover nm ent and the people in the city. So w hat m akes a city sm ar t? It?s about using technology to im pr ove the efficiency of a city w hile also

being envir onm entally fr iendly. This w ould include m obility, safety, healthcar e, and gover nance.

Back in 2015 w hen the Sm ar t City Challenge(SCC) had fir st star ted, it m otivated cities to look for r evolutionar y w ays of im pr oving or com pletely m aking a new bluepr int for

their futur e tr anspor tation system s that they w ould like to see in their cities. The w inning city Colum bus, Ohio r eceived a total of $140 m illion for their futur e tr anspor tation plans. Tw o year s later , the U.S. Depar tm ent of Tr anspor tation had put alm ost $350 m illion in public and pr ivate funds for sm ar t city and advanced tr anspor tation technologies.

They w er e a safe and envir onm entally fr iendly w ay to r ide ar ound Austin. But on M ar ch 21, 2020,

Som e tr anspor tation plans that the finalists of the Sm ar t City Challenge had ar e helping low er -incom e people access to tr ansit, building sm ar t cor r idor s, shar ing data applications that could help w ith tr affic, and incr easing the num ber of electr ic vehicles pow er ing stations and using solar pow er for electr ic vehicle char ging stations w ould r educe em issions. A sm ar t cor r idor is an Intelligent Tr anspor tation System that could help w ith the m obility in highw ays. Sm ar t cor r idor s help r educe accidents and tr affic by com m unicating im por tant infor m ation to dr iver s.

In our city of Austin, Texas ther e has been a lot of new technologies im plem ented over the year s. They have especially invested in tr anspor tation, as tr affic is

significant am ount of r evenue w hich w as given back to the com m unity. Half of the r evenue w ent to tr affic and public safety pr ogr am s and the other half to hospital tr aum a center s.

M or e about tr anspor tation and m obility is the bicycle lanes that w er e m ade in 2010 as an effor t to em it less gr eenhouse gasses and to m inim ize tr affic in dow ntow n ar eas of the city.

As of 2020 ther e ar e 25 m iles of pr otected bike lanes.

Austin Tr anspor tation expects to install about 40 m or e m iles in the upcom ing year s.

Another w ell know n for m of tr anspor tation im plem ented in Austin w as the electr ic

ar ound 5,000 electr ic scooter s w er e r em oved fr om the str eets of Austin because of Covid-19.

Dur ing the SCC, Austin addr essed a vision of having Connected and Autom ated Vehicles (CAVs). A CAV can ser ve for com m unication and is secur e, also gives them inter section contr ol, collision-fr ee navigation, pedestr ian detection and pr otection. For inter -CAV com m unications, Dedicated Shor t Range Com m unications (DSRC), is used.

unfor tunately ther e ar e other things that the m anufactur er s have to think about w hen they m ake these car s. For exam ple, the affor dability and availability of the electr ic car s. They ar e expensive not just to buy but to also m ake. This is one of the biggest r easons w hy not ever yone has an electr ic car.

Capital M etr o (CapM etr o) pr ovides public tr anspor tation for ever yone in Austin. I had inter view ed Sam Sar gent, Chief of Staff At Capital M etr o, he talked about a few w ays used by CapM etr o buses that keep the city of Austin efficient even dur ing peak hour , w hich is ar ound 5pm w hen ever yone is going hom e fr om w or k or school.

At the sam e tim e, pover ty and natur al disaster s could be avoided to pr event the loss of people. We need to delve deeper into the im pacts that AI w ill br ing on hum ans.

To under stand how AI w ill affect the hum an or der , it is necessar y to under stand how AI oper ates.
