A beautiful cashmere sweater with glass buttons from the new fall designer fashion was presented in the window display. I wandered up to the display and my face dropped from a smile to a frown. I would never be able to afford high fashion at such prices. With a sigh, I went into the next store that I laid my eyes on and hoped that I could actually afford something in my taste and budget. Glancing around the store, I built up the feeling of hope in my heart and went to browse around. I picked a chic skirt that appealed to my liking and felt the soft smooth fabric. I immediately felt my need to purchase this designer skirt but then I looked at the price tag. My adventure in this store was over.

O

n her stomach, a teenage girl lies on her bed. She has short, light brown hair, and is wearing a light pink dress that comes to her thighs over white leggings.

Her hand holds a pencil and hovers over a sketchpad. She draws a female on her paper and slowly defines her clothes. It soon becomes apparent that the girl in the sketch is wearing a black shirt and a pleated skirt. Soon, her socks are defined. They are white with black stripes, but they have to make way for the combat boots that go over them. The girl shifts her focus to draw an army jacket over the black shirt. She finishes the sketch and looks at it for a minute, deciding if her drawing is satisfactory, and then puts it on her desk. The girl is Miki

Park, and she plans to take it with her to shop later on.

Miki Park is a student who goes to LASA high school. She loves to sketch and play soccer. She also has her own unique sense of fashion and uses it to express herself daily.

“Depending on how I’m feeling that day, I’ll dress accordingly. On days I’m really hyped-up or excited about something, I’ll wear my jingle skirt. I suppose I would describe [my style] as being unique.” Miki said.

Miki feels that when dressing, a jacket is a must.

She also has a skirt that is somewhat of a trademark.

“One of my favorite things to wear would be the thing my friends hate most, the belly dancer’s skirt, which makes all that noise when I walk around. [My friends] were curious to see how far I could walk away without them hearing it, and they could hear me halfway around the school.” Miki said.

As demonstrated by the jingly belly dancer’s skirt, Miki doesn’t tend to stay inside the trend lines set for everyone. She would much rather make something that’s unique.

curious practices All over the world, questionable procedures are being performed. Animals are being skinned alive.

A

kitten. Kittens are playful and curious. They like to play inside with their owners, chasing and batting around feathers and or just lying down on the floor or nearest furniture when tired, providing company. Now take that kitten, nickname him Curio, and make his play area a bit smaller. He no longer has room to run around and play… all he can do is sit or stand… or, if he gets really bored, pace in small circles. His owners can still feed him food and he does get stimulation, though. And, he is inside, protected from the elements and cool.

Curio no longer has owners. He no longer gets fed on a semi-regular basis, and if he is, it isn’t nutritious for his needs. Curio has no house to be inside, protected from the weather. He’s stuck out in a small yard, bored out of his mind, and hungry too.

Curio is now put in a cage. One that is a little bit bigger than him. He’s moved into an area with other kittens. He has almost no stimulation. He sees other cats that throw themselves against the bars of the cage, or gnaw on their legs. Sometimes, another cat dies because of starvation, or because the small confines push it to insanity. Sometimes, the heat from the hot sun and open air gets to a cat, and it has no way to run around and cool off. A cat in the cage next to Curio dies. So Curio, seeing the meat and starving, is forced into cannibalism. He eats the rotting meat of his fellow cat, who was pushed to its limits by the conditions.

Sometimes, there are commotions in the area that the caged cats occupy. Men come in. They take some cages and load them on carts, slamming them on top of each other with no care for the

animal dies, sometimes other animals have to eat it--it’s food. It’s cannibalism.

A caged wolf waits to be made into a fur coat. Below, accesories are still being made of fur animal inside. Today, Curio is one of the animals that get taken away. His cage is snatched from the ground and he is thrown on top of another cage. The movement slams Curio’s head into the bars at the top of his cage, and he falls onto his side, now bruised. His head is bleeding now. He stands up while the men take the cart inside to a room, but his stance is wobbly due to his loss of blood. Curio’s head throbs and he watches the cage next to him is pulled away and the cat taken out. The cat tries to run away, but the humans that are handling it catch it and yank it up by its tail and bring it to a table. There are several metal clamps that hang above the table, and some that rest on it. A worker takes the terrified cat’s now broken tail and clamps it. He then puts the other on the cat’s ear, and presses a button three times, quickly. The animal spasms and then stops moving. The worker takes a knife and, beginning at the bottom of the stomach, starts cutting the animal’s fur from its body. He finishes and the workers come back to the cages. Curio is next. He does not resist, and is conscious for the whole procedure. At the end, he’s covered in blood, and no longer has his skin. The workers took it. They threw him on top of other animals… including the one who was skinned before him.

his is how the fur-farming industry operates.

There is no love for the animals that are killed for fashion, and they are put through torture that is unbearable for an animal lover like me to think about. The animals, from the day they are born, are put through torture. Mother animals like raccoon dogs are often very stressed during childhood and end up eating their babies. If any of the babies survive in the harsh conditions of being stuck in a cage in all of the elements, they are taken away and only together with their mother for feeding.

From then on, they are kept in small cages and may have painful mutations from inbreeding of the animals. Since exercising is a way to reduce stress, and the animals have small confines, the stress is just increased for the animals. Without proper stimulation, the animals revert to self-mutilation by biting themselves and pounding their heads against the bars of the cages. If another

hen it’s finally time to slaughter the animal, the slaughterers’ main objective is to paralyze the animal before skinning. For a bigger animal, such as foxes, this can be achieved by throwing the animal against the ground, or bashing it over the head. For smaller animal, like a rabbit of chinchilla, paralysis can be achieved by breaking the neck of the animal or electrocution. In the fur-farming industry, sadly, electrocution is considered humane.

The worst part is that we don’t even need fur farms in order to have the look of fur. With today’s technology, we can make fur-like pelts from oil products and plant products, we don’t even need to kill the animals. After all, to get wool, we don’t even need to slaughter the animal. Farmers trim them once every spring and we use that fur--the excess--to make wool products.

After all, the Indians were much more humane than the fur-farming industry. They would take just the amount they needed, and used the whole animal. They ate the meat, used the fat as protection for their skin, used the teeth and bones to make weapons. They used the fur to make clothing for the winter months. They honored the animals, and when they had to kill them, they did it quickly, with almost no paint to the animal.

There was nothing wrong with that. It was humane, and nothing was wasted.

The fur-farming industry just wastes these beautiful animals. They took a beautiful gift and exploited it, mangled it, and brutally hurt and killed it. The fur-farming industry has to be stopped. It is no longer even remotely needed, with the technology today, and it is just a cruel and terrible creation. No more animals should be harmed to give a human something soft that we can make by other, more humane ways. These animals that get killed are relatives to our domestic house pets. No one wants to slaughter their golden retriever or their Siamese cat, much less put them through the tortures of the industry. So the fur-farming industry just doesn’t make sense.

pring 2010 brought a handful of trends with it: Trouser pants, full skirts, long floaty dresses, and tweed blazers to name a few. And though these are considered some of the ‘new’ trends, in truth those trends, as with most trends, are recycled. Trouser pants were a highly popular style in the 1930’s, full skirts were all the rage in the 1950s’. Floaty dresses are very Victorian Era and Coco Chanel made tweed blazers a wardrobe staple in the 1920s’.

There have been iconic styles of eras or time periods since people have been wearing clothes. However, trends, which take place over a few years or less, didn’t really start until the

industrial revolution, when people could sew clothes more quickly using machines. As a result, the 20th century holds a huge diversity of trends unlike any before it.

Traditionally women wore long dresses that were generally very modest, covering them from their shoulders to their toes. In the early 20th century and late Victorian era dresses were still like this, but with that Victorian air of opulence and grandeur, and a sharp attention to detail.

In 1914 World War 1 began in Europe and the men of America left their jobs and went to help with the war. Women had to do the jobs to keep life on the home front stable. During this time there was a significant transformation in women’s fashion- their clothes used a lot less fabric due to rationing, and adopted an overall more tailored, menswear inspired look as the women temporarily joined the workforce.

The true fashion revolution wasn’t until the 1920’s, when women got the right to vote and joined the workforce permanently. The 20’s saw the rise of the flapper girls.

Women cut their hair short, (in the style of the new designer of the time, Coco Chanel,) hemlines rose and dresses got a more boyish shape. (not to mention high drama fringe, fur, and fishnets) COCO CHANEL REVOLUTIONIZED FASHION IN THE 1920s

pression, which started when the stock market crashed in 1929, had a big effect on the fashion industry. Women tended to have only one or two dresses that they made themselves from dress patterns. Still people liked to give an air of grandeur however, and so designs became more complicated and delicate.

MOVIESTARS GREATLY INFLUNCED WOMEN’S FASHION

America entered World War 2 in 1941. Once again the men went to war, once again the women filled their vacant jobs, and once again clothing became less tailored and used less cloth. However, unlike before during World War 1, hemlines hit at the knee and most women wore nylon stockings. However, later in the war nylon was rationed and used for parachutes, so women would draw a seam up the back of their leg with eyeliner to make it look like they were wearing them.

ROSIE THE RIVETER MOTIVATED WOMEN TO HELP WITH THE WAR

Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ which sported a more feminine look compared to the boxy, fabric conserving look of wartime, summarizes the style 1940s WOMENS of the 1950’s. The fifties had DRESS PATTERN fitted bodices and full skirts that hemmed at mid-calf. The fifties also saw the rise of athletic wear- such as the iconic letterman jacket in men’s fashion and tennis shoes. Saddle shoes were very popular during the 1950’s.

affected fashion. Jackie Kennedy, later known as Jackie O or Jackie Onassis, became first lady in 1961.

She was highly influential in politics and in fashion, where her sweater set, pillbox hat, oversized sunglasses, and string of pearls all became icons.

The early 1960’s were still conservative times like the 1950’s. But as the radical protests began- for peace in Vietnam, for racial equality, and saving the earth- radical fashions became popular too.

Earlier on, colors got brighter, patterns CLOCKWISE got bigger, hair grew longer, and before too long FROM TOP: that gave way to the hippie ways.

1960s CLOTHING ADD, JACKIE O, Many people feel the word ‘Hippie’ is interTHE 1960s changeable for the fashions of the 1970’s. Hippie fashions included classic blue jeans, tie-dye, empire waists and peasant-tops, peace signs, smiley faces, and paisley. But there were also styles for the more conservative. Generally speaking pants had a lower rise then in the past, and flared at the foot to the point where they were called ‘bell bottoms.’ Also high tops were very popular at this time.

The rise of grunge fashion occurred in the 1990’s.Grungewear included loose fitting clothing in plaids and dark colors, combat boots, and black nail polish.

On the conservative side, skirt suits in pastels were popular at the time. Cropped tops, blue jeans, and t-shirts were popular casual clothes. The Spice Girls had a huge impact on fashion- trends that came from them include leopard print, unionjack tees, mini-dresses, platform sneakers, and the sporty ‘girl power’ vibe.

he sun rises slowly with bright beams radiating from the center, preparing everyone for the beginning of a grand summer. The birds are chirping, the wind is breezy and people all around the world are feasting their eyes on the warm weather.

Summer starting with the month of June and ending in late August is the time where people get in the know about summer makeup trends from the runway and adapting them to their everyday lifestyle to look their best. On the runway, spectators watch as a long legged model struts down the runway, her eyelids painted with vivid indigo pigment. She pauses at the end of the catwalk then turns to make her exit.

Advertising the runway looks on TV and on Modeling Shows, the 3 top trends for the summer translate into the general female high school teen population. The trends from the designers on the TV are the inspiration high school girls use daily to make their summer makeup sleek, chic, and trendy.

Attentive and aware of the makeup look, Allison Harper speaks about how makeup influences her lifestyle and gives tips on how to use it usefully. Allison Harper, a junior at LASA High School, uses makeup as a way to express oneself. “For me, makeup is more of a personal medium of experimentation than anything, sometimes I’ll go into my bathroom and just see what crazy looks I can come up with, but when I go to school I tone the look down to appear more

modest and school appropriate.” Says Harper. Most girls her age experience the same exact question of what to slab onto their faces each day for their makeup to appear fresh, pretty and efficient.

“Generally I don’t go too funky or too fake, I keep my make up natural, and that just so happens to be in style.” Harper says. For Harper, she has a taste for her makeup to match her mood. If she is feeling angry, she will decorate her eyelids with bright red eye shadow and bold bright lipstick to portray anger. For most teenage girls makeup is the essential key for them to feel secure and keep themselves up to style.

The three runway trends that are in for the 2010 summer season are vivid blue eye shadow, matte lipstick, and black liquid eyeliner. “Eyes are set off with white and grey-blue eye shadow - the Eye Shadow Duo N° 115P-116V and a generous layer of mascara, I would recommend using Chanel’s eye shadow because there is more texture and deep coloring in them.” says Julio Lanzilloti, a makeup expert behind the makeup counters at Nordstrom’s. Lanzilloti is a 36-year-old homosexual male that lives and breathes makeup.

Lanzilloti went to school at the Austin Art Academy for 7 years to get the skills he has today. He also attended the School of Beauty in New York for 3 years and works part time at a salon called Make It. He has been experimenting with makeup since an early age and the interest came to him as he was growing up. “When all the kids would play on the playground, I would sit on the bench with all of the girls and tell them what makeup would look good with their skin tone.” Lanzilloti says. He can distinguish from different brands easily and has a passion for beauty that will never fade.

“I like to focus in on one thing, learn about it, and then apply my newfound skills to the environment which I am accustomed to all on the topic of makeup.” Lanzilloti says.

Having so much experience, Lanzilloti spills that Chanel and Lo’Oreal have the best brands that you can buy makeup from, any kind and any price. Both Lanzilloti and Harper agree that lipstick is one of the trendiest makeup accessories one will ever have.

“The reason I love lipstick so much is because I feel like it makes up a lot of my style. I change what I apply based -

Eating disorders on the rise everywhereboth on and off the runways

T

he model’s face is gaunt, her cheeks hollow and her eyes sunken. Her translucent skin is stretched tight over her bones. Her hair is so dull and brittle that every time she runs her fingers through it, a clump of it falls out. She never eats, if she can help it. Food, she has been taught, is evil. If she eats, if she gains any weight, she will lose her job. The thinner she is, the more she is paid, the more fame she gets, the more opportunities there are for her. She will become sicker and sicker, wasting away day by day , her strength diminishing exponentially until, if she doesn’t stop it, doesn’t turn back, one morning she won’t wake up. Skin and bones, a skeleton. That’s all she is.

Today, the Model Health Inquiry estimates that 40% of catwalk models suffer from eating disorders. For years, fashion critics have campaigned against the model’s unhealthy emaciated body type, with little success: Designers say that they need the girls to be thin because the clothes hang better, and they pay the skinnier girls much more than those models who maintain their natural, healthy, body type. The pressure to be thin on the catwalk is huge. And since the skinniest girls get the money, the fame and the opportunities, it is their pictures that turn up everywhere in society- in our newspapers and magazines, on our TV and billboards- even on the sides of busses. Everywhere we see these

images of America’s ‘ideal’ woman, and stress that we are too fat. Many of us become obsessed with our weight, and try to control it by any means necessary- and from this a lot of women and girls develop severe eating disorders that end up controlling their lives.

The designers like the emaciated body type. They say that the clothes hang better on skinnier girls, that you can see how they move. What the designers want are walking clothes hangers, no matter how sickly these girls have to become.

Eating disorders are often thought of as the disease of the vain, but that is not necessarily true. Eating disorders are generally caused by low self-esteem or depression, or as away for a girl to control a bit of a life she feels she has no say in. There are two main types of eating disor-

SCARY SKINNY MODELS WALKING THE CHANEL SPRING 2010 SHOW ders: Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. An anorexic battles weight and food by shunning them both: She essentially starves herself, by eating very small amounts and over exercising. If she doesn’t stop or get help, she will starve to death. A bulimic has the same aims as the anorexic, but goes about it differently. Bulimics binge and purge, or eat a ton, then make themselves vomit or take laxatives. Such eating disorders cause problems with your whole body: Lack of calorie intake causes loss of energy, which makes it hard to think straight and remember things and can cause severe

depression. They bruise easily, get cold easily, and because of heat loss grow fine hair all over their body. But that is just the beginning. Anorexics can develop blood diseases like anemia: their hearts become weak and small, and they become at great risk for heart failure. They become highly susceptible to kidney stones and kidney failure. Their hormones go crazy, and their periods stop and their ovaries can shut down, preventing them from ever having children.

To get better, these girls have to go though serious psychotherapy to rid them of their fear of being fat, and to return them to normal.

This condition can happen anybody under a stress: But the catwalk models are not only pressured to be as tiny as possible, but encouraged. hen designers decide who will be in and who will be out in their coming runway show, they look at every aspect of the contending models. The girls have to be the thinnest, the tallest, the prettiest- it is a lot to live up to.

Model Ali Michael started catwalking when she was only fifteen years old. Her modeling agency kept telling her she had to loose weight, until she became obsessed with food.

She developed a severe eating disorder, but as she shrank, her career took off. She was being booked for Chanel, Dior, Lanvin and Marc Jacobs , appearing in Vogue and Elle and covering Teen Vogue. She was paid more than she could have ever dreamed, but she was very sick.

“I was on a plane home from Paris after the spring ’08 shows,” Said Michael in a Teen Vogue interview. “ I ran my fingers through my hair and when I pulled them out I had a dry, brittle clump in my hand. I realized then that I needed to make a change.” She sought help with a nutritionist and psychiatrist, and after a few months, she grew healthier and had returned to her natural weight. She flew off to Paris in February of 2008 for fall show casting in high spirits. But she was not well received.

“I did one day of castings, and in that one day was told by two people that I had ‘fat legs’ and by one that I had ‘huge ankles’ I went back to my agency that night and my manager said the response from clients was that I had gained too much weight” Said Michael. She didn’t get any shows, and they sent her home from Paris.

The newspapers found out. The next day the Wall Street journal ran a huge story: “Wasn’t Skinny Supposed to be out of Fashion?”

“My first response (to the story) was that my career was over,” Said Michael “After thinking it though, though, I realized this was actually a chance to try and help other people.

The fact is, weight is a serious problem, and it should have changed by now” Today Ali Michael maintains her healthy weight, and campaigns against eating disorders on the runway.

“

websites, on T-shirts, the sides of busses- you name it; They are everywhere. And more often than not, the ads sport skinny, scantily clad airbrushed girls, promoting a perfume or a fashion line. These ads subconsciously force an ideal upon us and leave us thinking we should want to be skinny and sexy just like ‘them’, to have the latest fashions- at any cost. These ads are particularly dangerous for young girls, who don’t realize that these women are not the norm, that the computer takes these women’s pictures and changes it into something that looks completely different., and go to painstaking lengths to ‘fit in’

Advertisements subconsciously force an ideal upon us and leave us thinking we should want to be skinny and sexy just like ‘them’.

Stories like Ali’s have helped to open the public’s eyes, but it unfortunate that the issue could not be brought to life without people suffering: In 2006, after a model died during a show in South America, the Madrid Fashion Week banned girls with BMI’s less than 18.

Since then there have been echos of this and more bans have been put in place. But still not much has changed. People with eating disorders tend to be very secretive about it and thus it is hard for any sort of ban to be enforced. So still we are all surrounded by media promoting the skeletal body types.

You see the ads everywhere. They are on billboards, posters, on television, in magazines, catalogs, newspapers, on

There is no way to eradicate eating disorders: There will always be someone that becomes obsessed with their weight.

But by first practically forcing models to be sick, then posting their photo-shopped pictures everywhere, our society promotes them, and causes a lot more girls than necessary to stress about their appearance. But with the efforts made in recent years, there is more hope that in the future, the ideal that America worships will be a happy, healthy, and independent woman.

Find out what was hot and what was not from the runways of the spring 2010 fashion week.

s if there was any doubt in our minds before, the collections that designers sent down the runway for this years spring/summer shows have affirmed one fact: 2010 is the start of a new era.

The new inspiration and fresh start was evident in many collections.

There were new designs, instead of reinvented old ones. The term “dressed to impress” was pushed up to the next level.

“I think that people wanted to put on a show for 2010.

I know Chanel defiantly did,” said LASA freshman Mo Quinn.

I asked her about her favorite trends from the shows. “I loved all the floral prints at Marc by Marc Jacobs. And all the shades of blue, that was really big.”

There was an abundance of trends on the runways, ranging from rustic straw bags to sophisticated sportswear.

Here are the top trends from the runways that you should know.

1.

white out Easy, breezy, all-white outfits were abundant on the runways.

White is an easy way to say summer. But even though it looks cool and airy, be careful: “I wouldn’t last through the day in all white.” Says Quinn “You’d be able to see everything I spilled on myself,”

You can wear the colors- muted greens, browns and khakis, or have cargo details on pants or a skirt. The most important thing to remember is to not overdo it: you don’t want to look like a soldier; you want your look to be inspired by one.

TIP: Try mixing a tough jacket with a floaty dress or skirt, to balance out the masculine and feminine.

TIP: It is very easy to get carried away with denim. To keep from looking like an monochromatic old farmer, pair your blues with crisp white blouses, or chambray in a lighter or darker shade than your jeans.

Chanel had a party of a runway show for this spring. Instead of the traditional clean catwalk, the set for the show was something like a barnyard. There was live music courtesy of Lily Allen, and all the models were smiling. “I loved the Chanel collection.”

Said Quinn. “I thought it was so cool that you could take hay and clogs and make it into something that looks so chic!”

TIP: Pair creamy whites in natural fabrics with denim and straw, and wood-heeled clogs.

The trend is comfortable and romantic, and airy enough for a hot Austin summer.

In Quinn’s words, “You don’t want to be looking like a ‘hoochy mamma.”

he most important thing to remember when shopping by the trends is to be inspired by the runway. Add your own personal creativity to your clothes. Don’t try to recreate exact outfits.

When you choose to conform to what is “in” you need to make sure you don’t loose your own personal style. If something just isn’t “you”, don’t wear it! Odds are, you won’t feel comfortable in it, and if you can’t have confidence in what you wear, you won’t look good or feel good.

The last trend that is present in the 2010 summer line is black liquid eyeliner.

Black liquid eyeliner is useful because there is no smudge and if applied right the look is crisp and clean and gives out the message of sophistication. “The fun with this is you aren’t limited with your colors, and you can even do different colors on the top and bottom lids.
