From the Editor

œ Welcome to our magazine! At the beginning of this project, our team debated constantly about what topics we should cover in our magazine. We all had diverse interests, but found a common thread that ran through them all: everyday lifestyle. In the end, we created Lifestyled to inspire others to look for joy in everyday experiences and to allow you to learn more about current trends. As high school students, we understand the monotonous tedium of daily life and found ourselves cycling through the same routine over and over. We believe that life is best lived when it is fully enjoyed, and we wanted to provide you with the latest in fashion, media, food, fitness, and recreation. Throughout the magazine, you’ll find in depth stories, tips and tricks, and other fun and interesting tidbits. We urge you to go out and explore your passions and discover new interests along the way and hope that our magazine can help to play a part in that discovery. Enjoy!

Gabrielle Jabour Editor in Chief of Lifestyled

ow Hard is Healthy?

Inside the modern world of health By Daylyn Gilbert

Healthy food has become a cure for lifestyle, including saving close relationships. With such a fast growing health conscious modern world keeping a healthy lifestyle is not as hard as it is perceive it to be. Recently that transition from unhealthy to healthy is becoming an easier transition.

“Food is the modern day cigarette” -Kent Walker Texas restaurant owners Rishi Dhir, Jordan Feiner, and Kent Walker give an inside look on what it takes to live a happy healthy modern lifestyle in 2017. “It’s really difficult start because food is the modern-day cigarette, The modern-day drug you know if you look at some research sugar is more addictive than some of the drugs out there that are widely known as super addictive,” Kent Walker, cofounder of True Food Kitchen said

en and Flower Child with several locations in Texas and California. People that start from an unhealthy diet and try transitioning into a healthy well maintained diet say that it is “very difficult,” Jordan Feiner, owner of Leaf restaurant gives us some more in insight on this difficult transition he has seen from observing his customers. “It seems like a good challenge for most of our customers I feel like we have provided a niche to help these people so it’s been a little easier but yes, I feel like it’s been a lot harder for our customer base. Thank God we’re here because I mean, we are wanted,” Feiner said. Once one begins to eat healthy, it is important to watch what is eaten not only at home in the kitchen, but especially when going out to eat as well. 25% of americans claim that they do not eat healthy when going out to eat. “If you were going to eat out find places that make their own food, and that’s weird to say because everyone thinks restaurants make their own food, but it’s rare in our industry. Most people are buying prepackaged food or frozen things that were made somewhere else and are just putting them in the microwave. if you can find a restaurant that buys whole ingredients meaning what comes through their back door is a fish or a chicken or a steak and a bunch of vegetables in boxes and they break it up from there the food is always going to be better for you,” Walker said. In the past couple of years this new industry has been booming. The healthy restaurant concept is brand new and changing the restaurant scene. struggle of maintaining a healthy diet when going out to eat. “It’s not what people think health food is. It’s not the dried kale and boring foods of that nature because you can eat at True Food Kitchen and say ‘wow that was good that satisfied my palate’ and ‘oh yeah that was healthy rather than a lot of

healthy restaurants like you know this is good for me but it just doesn’t taste that great’,” Walker said. But why are these restaurants suddenly becoming so popular? Is the nation as a whole becoming healthier? “The Internet helped create a lot of health-conscious era there is so much more influx of information people get on the Internet from searching for stuff but two the city has attracted so many people that live here it is attracting those kind of people that want to be health-conscious,” Feiner said. Healthy food is also not what many think it to be. It is not the “hamster food, the pure lettuce, or the strange dry flax breads we think about when we hear the word healthy eating”. Eating healthy does not even require being a vegetarian or a vegan. It is just about eating the whole unprocessed foods. It is also especially helpful to not be exposed to unhealthy food daily. When at home if all that is available is healthy, then that is what will be eaten. “When you go to the grocery store just shop on the outer circle hit the vegetables hit the meat section if you are going to get cheeses and things of that nature stay on the outside and kind of stay out of

Doritos and Mountain Dew’s and things of that nature and if you cook that way too it tends to be healthier,” Walker said.

However, just because one is staying healthy doesn’t mean it’s not okay to treat yourself every once and awhile.

Another important thing to remember when choosing foods is knowing one’s body and what is good for that specific person. Keeping in touch with the body consuming the food that is put into it is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“I have a big chunk and portion of foods that I will never give up no matter how healthy I get that I absolutely love I can’t deny it but I am I still a huge sucker for pizza and I am still a sucker for a really good hamburger no I have my ebs and flows I eat a wonderful salad here every day i’m not saying that balances out my other cravings,” said Feiner.

“Knowing your own bodies and what is good and bad for your allergens whether it’s pork intake or fat intake each individual person has to know what is good for their body and an up side is we can tailor a salad for anybody over here at Leaf,” Feiner said. Eating healthy has all sorts of benefits to the people who decide to take that route. It can change the brain’s mental state to having a more positive outlook on life creating stronger relationships with the people in close communities.

Our changing world is allowing new research on the benefits of eating healthy. Whether it is saving a relationship or just trying to lose a few pounds it may just be worth while. Overall, eating healthy has benefits to everyday lifestyle, relationships, and living happy and healthy.

“Blatantly I think it makes you live longer. 50 years ago people smoked and didn’t really believe it was going to kill you. We look back and laugh at it I think we’re going to do the same thing in the future of I think we’re gonna look back and be like did you believe that people use a drink Mountain Dew?” said Walker. What if eating healthy is also partially a perceived health? Consuming a salad and expecting the results to be a slimmer figure or a happier state of mind could be a piece of the reason it makes life so much more enjoyable. “It is little more ethereal I think it helps to my knee and I think if people feel whether they eat a healthy salad or it’s kind of a perceived health so people feel better when they are eating salad,” Feiner said.

Rishi Dhir agrees. “I can definitely see the difference in how I feel and how my body performs. I get less sickness, have more energy, sleep better, and have better mental focus when my diet is better,”Dhir said.

The channels that create the videos for YouTube

able television has been encompassed by the emerging YouTube, which now has overcome all US cable networks in viewership from the age division of 18 to 49. YouTube has completely transformed, not by luck, but by its own ability. YouTube was created in 2005 and has grown massively in the 12 years since, now having a little over 1 billion users. This all is possible because of the uploaders of the videos and workers behind it, and the many who are trying to become the next big thing, spending lots of their time and effort into it, becoming their job and life. “I started on YouTube in 2006 because it was a promising video sharing site,” Basinger said. Basinger runs the Lazy Game Review channel on YouTube, and has reached 500,000 subscribers on it. He is 30 and has been doing this for seven years. People like Basinger making YouTube videos mainly for just fun and they had seen other channels that had burst to popularity and used them as inspiration. “We had high hopes in the beginning. We wanted to be a lot like Smosh. But we realized it would take a long time. Things started to look up once we started a the logic series. But most of all we’re just happy to have a solid fan base that enjoys our work,”Brian Kissig said, one third of the CK production YouTubers. People on YouTube end up being drawn in with the idea of becoming famous but soon they realize that it will be quite hard to actually achieve. Mainly people just want to keep growing their channel and also have their current subscribers stay with them.

YouTubing can be a pastime or with lots of work it can become their job. All the time that it takes to edit and record the videos contribute to this. “It all depends on the videos coming out. It typically takes about two weeks to edit a typical logic video or a Smash Bros Madness because of all the visual effects and sound work. Since I have a full time job I find myself editing about 10 to 15 hours a week sometimes more sometimes less. Corrupted took the longest. I had to have logged at least 100 hours working on the one,” Kissig said. CK Productions consists of three people that all work on making videos that are making comedic videos about different games. Usually YouTubers spend lots of time making videos, because almost any video that is made can be a hit and could possibly go viral.

“It is very hard to predict how a video is going to do, so I like to try and keep my expectations low for how they will do. That way when I make a video that ends up getting way more views and gives me lots of support to my channel, it is always a lot of fun to see happen,” Max Moran said, founder of the self named MAX MORAN channel. Max has only been a YouTuber for two years and is currently just a side thing that he does whenever he is free, but for some people it becomes a job. Lots of YouTubers are like Max and do it just for fun, not expecting anything out of it.

“YouTube definitely feels more like a job to me at this point, simply because it has me running my own business, paying all my own taxes, and dealing with legal stuff. But it’s like no other job I’ve ever had in that I actually like it still,” Basinger said. The dream for the people on YouTube though never ends, always seeing the end of the tunnel. “I plan on continuing this channel as long as I possibly can and hopefully developing it into a business someday,” as Kissig said.

That’s when I really started, I guess you could say, getting recognition in Austin,” Ko said. “At that time, people would only go to newspapers like The Statesman and The Chronicle for information on where to eat, so I just really identified myself as an expert in restaurant coverage. Four years later now I’m official restaurant expert for the city of Austin.” As blogging became more known as a social platform, an increasing number of brands began to take notice of the industry. “I think blogging has become more and more mainstream,” Kushner said. “I’ve been able to work with more retailers and food and beverage companies and also with different hotels.” Although blogging has many perks, fashion/lifestyle blogger and owner of The Retail Vault, Charlton (Chottie) Hamilton, notes that owning a blog is a lot more time consuming than people think. “There’s a lot more that goes into it, even the little tags and how you save your image so that it pulls up better in a search bar,” Hamilton said. “It’s those little things people don’t realize. There’s a lot of little details in it.” According to a survey of over 800 bloggers, finding and dedicating time to blogging is the number one struggle faced by blog owners. “Honestly [the biggest challenge is] just having enough hours in the day,” Kushner said. “I probably spend 20 to 30 hours on the blog per week in addition to being a full time student and trying to have a social life, so it’s just a lot.” There are often many misconceptions about the workload of blogging. The process of producing a blog post, which contains many components, is one of them. “First I’ll start with the idea and I’ll put together the outfit and then go shoot the outfit and then edit the pictures,” Hamilton said. “Then I upload them, do all of the backend SEO type of things, write the post, and use affiliate networking to try to make commision off of the items. I have to go through and create little gadgets, implement

them on the blog, schedule the post, promote it, post it, and then share it once it’s been posted.” Through the growth of the blogging industry, the sheer amount of blogs and competition has greatly increased. “It’s definitely a lot of competition. If you want to succeed, you gotta be the best of the best,” Hamilton said. “From there you kinda just have to let it be organic. If you force growth then people can tell that and they don’t want to be just another person being sold to, they want to feel like they’re connecting.” Especially with the large number of blogs available, it is incredibly important to choose the right sponsors and stay true to yourself and to readers. “Just try to be your own person, try not to give into all the pressures to conform because everybody feels those,” Kushner said. “Don’t accept every single collaboration that comes your way.

According to the 2017 State of Blogging Report, 20% of online blogs (over 36 million) cover the topic of lifestyle, which includes design, travel, food, fashion/style, and much more. Photo by Pexels.

I made sure very early to only agree to sponsorships that really fit my style and fit me. I’d rather be honest to myself and my style and keep that consistent, and I know that my readers appreciate that too because I’m not just filling their inbox with random stuff. That’s not what they signed up for.” Social media has played a large role in the growth of the blogging world. It is critical to getting blog traffic and growth, as well in furthering reader engagement, connectivity and networking. “Social media is key for everything,” Hamilton said. “I definitely am trying to constantly post and engage.” When used hand in hand, social media and blogging have had the power to change the way people do normal online tasks such as shopping and finding out information. “I don’t think bloggers would be able to do what we do right now if it wasn’t for Instagram. I think Instagram has completely changed how people consume content,” Ko said. “For example, I never go to Yelp to look for restaurants recommendations

and I don’t think my readership goes to Yelp to look for restaurants recommendations. Instead they go to me. I think Instagram in general is how people shop, travel, and eat now.” In terms of expansion, setting media related goals is critical to running and growing a successful blog. “I definitely have social media goals.” Kushner said. “I think when you get to a point where you’re not making goals for yourself then that means that you’re no longer interested in what you’re doing, so I try to always have new goals.” As time goes on, the blogging industry is expected to continue to heavily influence advertising and social media and climb further to the top of the online world. “I think blogs have evolved so much,” Hamilton said. “At the end of the day, our world is changing.”

T

eachers, the unsung heroes

The story of two seprate teachers, and how their profession effects their life By: Matthew Dalgleish

Austin 7th grade english teacher Ms. Hart rolls out of bed and rushes to her espresso machine, after downing her daily dose of espresso she runs up the stairs to wake her daughter Evangeline for school. After dropping off her daughter, she rushes to school in order to get there in time to greet her students and enrich their lives with education.

“I believe that all my teachers impact me” Hart, however is not the only person with this routine. Millions of teachers across the US have similar routines every morning. Hart and Kelly Morledge (History Teacher) are two teachers at Kealing Middle School in Austin, Texas. Teachers are woven into the very fabric of who we are. “I feel teaching is a vital job within society as my job as a teacher is to prepare students to be an active participant in that same society.” Moreledge said “Unfortunately I do not think others always see it that way.”

24

“I believe that all of my teachers impact me. They mold me into who I am, and I even sometimes rub off on them. It’s really cool.” Said Zeeshan Yazdani 9th grader at LASA High school. Everyone has had roughly 40 teachers by the time they reach college. This fact could be part of the reason why many are forgotten. However, they are so incredibly important in molding our life and who we are. Teachers have to dedicate their life to their jobs. They have little free time, and unlike other professions when they go home they still have work. The only free time that teachers have is over the summer. “Here is very little free time… The summer is a true break though and allows me to travel and see different parts of the country and world,” said Morledge.

26

Due to teachers having little free time, their job tends to consume them, and they become their job. Ms. Hart when asked about her lifestyle; she respomded “Teaching is so much a part of who I am that I’m not sure it really affects my lifestyle anymore. It just is my lifestyle.”

We affect our teachers just as much as they affect us. Teachers dedicate their lives to teaching in order to help further our society by brightening the minds of young individuals. As much as the teachers shape our lifestyle, theirs are shaped by us. Teachers are so influential peoples lifestyle, and vise versa. Next time you see one of your teachers, maybe you won’t mess around and you’ll pay attention.

A Passion For Fashion

An inside look into what it takes to be seccessful in the fashion industry By Georgia Breston

The world clothing and textile industry reached almost $2,560 trillion in 2010. The fashion industry is a big part of everyone’s lives, most people rely on it just to get dressed in the mornings. Lesley Tracy is a stylist in Biddeford Maine; Kate Compton owns three boutiques in Austin, Fredericksburg and Marble Falls; Csilla Somogyi designs her own clothes and owns two stores, one in Austin and one in New York. All three were able to create a successful career in the fashion industry which can be difficult in modern day America. This piece explores the fashion industry through the eyes of three different professions in fashion, giving an inside look into what it really takes to have a career in the fashion industry. “I feel like it is a good job because people are always going to want to look good and they are going to seek out people to help them do that.” Tracy said. Tracy knew from a young age that styling was something she had a passion for and wanted

to pursue. “I actually went to beauty school when I was 16, graduated when I was 17 and I started doing hair at that time,” said Tracy. “So I knew from the time when I was really young that hair and makeup was something that I was very interested in.” Csilla Somogyi had a similar experience; at age 13 she began making her own dresses to wear on the weekends because her school made her wear a uniform. After working for some larger companies, Somogyi decided she wanted create her own designing business. “Working for a few large companies was excellent for experience for when the time came to try it out on my own,” Somogyi said. Experience was crucial to understanding the field and was excellent preparation for having the responsibility of their own business. Tracy would donate her time, working with makeup artist and hair stylist to learn from them and begin networking. Kate Compton went to school to pursue physical therapy when she decided she wanted to begin a career in the fashion industry after working at a boutique in her town for eight years. “Girls who just like fashion can’t just assume that they will be successful at having a store,” Compton explained. When Tracy is not styling someone’s hair at

31

the salon she is often styling people behind the scene for commercials, shows, films, and music videos. This side of the industry can be chaotic, at times boring, and often requires for Tracy to travel. “On a commercial there are a lot of people telling me what they want the people to look like. A lot of times someone will come in and I’ll have the director, the art director, or the cinematographer come over and they will say ‘you need to make them older’ ‘can you grey their hair or make him look like he has wrinkles’,” said Tracy. Tracy also has the unique experience of working with celebrity clients and explained what working with that status of people entitles. “Taylor Swift has a distinct look, so with somebody like that you have to try to accommodate to what ever their wishes are to make sure they are happy and comfortable in their surroundings.” Tracy said. The day to day operation for a boutique is very different than that of working as a stylist. “The inventory, I’m constantly moving things around, redoing displays, there’s obviously the paperwork side of it too, I have to set aside days for that.

32

But the main thing is having really great people that work for you,” Compton said. According to Compton the constantly evolving fashion industry requires some boutiques to adapt to the new trends. “I like to be fashion forward but there are stores that stay classic and that customer knows what they have and that’s what they always wear and that works for some people. So it just really depends, there are some years I sell that it seems like the turnaround is a lot quicker because the fashion is really fun and people like the color,” Compton said. Similarly, Somogyi is affected by trends in the industry but differently because she is producing her own clothing. She caters to the desires of her clients while staying true to her own designs. “I come up with new designs to suit the needs of my clients or from my own inspiration and add those to the line,” Somogyi explained. Styling requires Tracy to know what the new trends in the hair and makeup industry are because of her work on commercials, music videos and just the day to day requests in the salon. “You have to keep up with the latest fashion.

“This is what I get up for every single day. I’m at all the stores and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” Hair and makeup changes from year to year,” Tracy said. The competition is something that has proved difficult for my sources, particularly with other businesses offering lower prices. However, both Tracy and Compton said that it is the quality of what your offering that will make it worth spending a little extra money. “You just have to create an experience that is going to be worth maybe spending a little bit more coming in here versus going to Target,” Compton said. Compton, Tracy, and Somogyi emphasized that these professions demand constant hard work on a daily basis. Often a day working in the fashion

industry require long hours, traveling, and staying on top of the inventory, employees, and the day to day operations. “It’s easy as far as the goal is to make everybody happy that you work with, but it is a lot of hours and you have to be really flexible,” Tracy said. However, all these women seem to love their jobs and and have a passion for the career they choose. “I love it and this is what I get up for every single day. I’m at all the stores and I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Compton shared.
