LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Dear readers, We are so excited to share with you the first issue of Exist to ever hit the stands. After reading our magazine, we hope to you’ll learn new techniques and be able to incorporate new trends and beauty ideas into your life, as well as feel informed and inspired by current pop culture news and information, so get ready for an era of Exist!

For the past few months, everyone at this magazine has worked to perfect and bring you this new issue of Exist and believe us, it’s completely worth the wait! All of us here hope that this magazine inspires you in new ways in relation to modern culture as it did for us.

In this premier issue of Exist, you’ll get a taste of what is to come; the hottest artists of the year, freshest trends, new beauty ideas just for you and celebrity news are just a few of the basics that you’ll see in this issue. We’re excited to share with you our fashion tips and ways to save money in the fashion and beauty department, while still loving your purchases and much more, so read up! The three editors of Exist magazine, Erin M., Ify E. and Emery R., are all students at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy in Austin. All three girls are 14 and were Texas born and raised. They all enjoy elements of fashion and entertainment and are excited to bring their love of these to you, our readers.

ERIN

Erin is one of three triplets. She enjoys reading and absolutely loves animals. Her favorite subjects are history and science. Erin loves the show “Sherlock,” and is obsessed with all the actors in the show, especially Benedict Cumberbatch. She enjoys music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. She loves any fashion and could not live without her lace up oxford boots.

Ify was born in Austin and bred as a local Texas Longhorns fan. In her free time, Ify enjoys creating music on the piano and playing a variety of sports, such as volleyball and softball. She is a classic teenager in that she loves the current boy bands and artists, like Drake, Justin Bieber and One Direction, but she also enjoys the work of past boy bands such as the Backstreet Boys and N’SYNC.

EMERY Emery is an energetic young teen that not only is involved in sports, such as soccer, but who also plays tenor sax in the LBJ marching band. Emery enjoys country music and the outdoors and adores every element of comfort fashion. She loves finding beauty steals at cosmetic stores and loves her numerous Pandora stations.

Boutiques for Fashion

Walking down the street, one might wonder where the best place to get the latest trends is. Is it the Dillards that your sister goes to every weekend or is it the small boutique that the girl in your history class shops at?

If you want something common that everyone at school is wearing, go to the Dillards, but if you want something original that will last you a long time and a good shopping experience, go to the boutique.

Here’s why.

Boutiques offer something that you can’t find everywhere. Good service. When you walk into a boutique, you’re immediately greeted by someone who will help you find whatever you are looking for. They can help you find your style, your price range, even your size and will not rush your time. The employees at a boutique are always happy to help their customers and can find you outfits to mix and match. Boutiques can offer more than just clothes, they have cosmetic products, baked goods, and merchandise that relates to you locally as well.

Boutiques also have better collections of clothes; they don’t mass order one outfit.

“We carry local designers, that you can’t find in a department store. Also harder to find brands... something more unique,” said Kelly Calderon, assistant to the Manager of Blue Elephant Boutique in North Austin. “[Boutiques] carry things that [we] know the local girls would like, and our customers can tell us what they want so that we can give more direct information to our buyers, and that is harder for department stores to accomplish.”

At boutiques you can have a much better experience, can really get to know the person selling you your clothes, and

that makes is so much easier to trust their opinion, which is a must have for the person you have selling you your clothes. Being able to trust their opinion and know that their interest really is in helping you improves the whole experience.

“The shopping experience here is also better than in a department store, it’s more personal in a sense and when you go into a boutique you really get an experience. You know the feel of the lighting, the uniqueness.

There’s always something really different

that you won’t always see everywhere else,” Calderon said.

Another thing that makes the shopping experience better at boutiques is that it is much easier to find what you want.

Boutiques are much smaller and therefore more accessible.

You walk in and immidiately see where the skirts are or that the vintage dresses are kept in in the back corner of the shop.

Thats another plus of boutiques only ordering a few of each item, there is more variety in what they have and rather than buying two outfits, you can buy a few shirts or skirts that can mix with any outfit. You can also easily find, or be led to, accessories that match the outfit and the store employees can also give you tips on what matches your eyes or what matches your skin tone.

“We care about the people, this makes your experience so much better because you have an honest opinion on how you look in an outfit,” Calderon said when asked why her coworkers are great people to shop with.

So when you’re wondering wether to shop at Dillards or a small boutique, come back to this story and remember all that boutiques have to offer that you can’t find at any department stores.

In all, boutiques offer a better shopping experience and you can more easily find the styles you the styles you are looking for.

GRADIENT CUTOFF SHORTS: All the shorts at the mall are starting to look the same, color blocked and clean cut. Now there’s something new, an ombre cutoff jean shorts. STUDDED COLLARS: Studded collars can make or break an outfit. If you have a really simple dress or shirt, you can easily add some pizzaz by adding studs to the collar or wearing a studded shirt underneath. They bring attention away from unflattering places while still looking fresh and cool. Careful though, don’t wear a necklace with this or it will clash and be too top heavy. -Photo

AVIATOR SUNGLASSES: In the summer, something as simple as tanning can hurt your eyes, and you need sunglasses. Don’t just get the cheapest pair you can find, get a pair of aviators. This old fashion is coming back fast, they not only protect your eyes, but look good with and outfit, and can hide bags perfectly with their unique shape.

DIP-HEM SKIRTS: The biggest trend hitting the new year is dip-hem skirts. These are perfect if you’ve got any insecurities about your thighs, because these cover the back of your legs, and show off the good parts. In addition, they expose your cute shoes that would be hidden under any skirt that would hide your insecurities.

Getting overwhelmed by your shrinking closet space? Don’t know what to do with your old jeans? Well, we have the perfect solution for you! As cliché as that seems, it’s true that the Exist editors have the perfect solution to dealing with your old jeans while giving you new style options without costing tons of money. Here are the steps to fixing your dilemma.

JEANS: If you have any jeans that fit but are faded or a slightly ripped, you can distress them for a whole new style. Just use a standard bleach on the fabric to add color and rip them for texture.

JEAN SHORTS: Have too many plain jean shorts?

Try creating a new pair with lace.

Cut two pocket covers of plain lace material and sew these directly on the pockets of the shorts. You can be even more creative by adding embroidery. -Photo

JEAN SHORTS: Another way to get rid of plain shorts is to bleach them and then dye them.

JEANS: If you have jeans that don’t fit, then you can always make a cute bag. Add your own style by bedazzling it, adding ribbon, or even adding beads or buttons.

You can use the pockets as detail and create a bag to last you forever.

Make sure to check and draw out what you will do to your jeans before doing so.

You don’t want to risk making an error and having to throw them out. Reference this chart for cutting your pants or sewing things on. To make shorts, ensure that you cut both sides evenly. You can do this by folding a cut side over the next side to be cut so they directly line up. Taking as many procautions while doing this is nessesary because once you mess up, theres no going back unless you’re willing so sew a pair of jeans completely back together.

Clothes For You

Knowing what to wear can be complicated, especially when so many stores and media advertise for the smallest, thinnest body types. There are clothes that can make any body look fantastic, but it can be difficult to find one on your own. No matter the size, we’ll help you find the perfect clothes for you.

Straight Body Type

If you have a straight body type, then you want to dress your top proportionally to your bottom. In other words, your top should not stand out more than you bottoms.

You also want to enhance your waist, which you can do by just adding a belt. Be careful of form fitting clothes, they can look great or be a disaster.

Spoon Body Type With a spoon body type, you want to draw attention to your upper body, easily done with a pattern, a high waisted skirt or belt. The high waist also takes attention away from your stomach and hips.

Pear Body Type

If you have the pear body type, you’re going to want to add volume and emphasis to your chest. You can do this by having an extravagant pattern on your top or a bright color. It’s also a good idea to emphasize your small waist, easily done with a belt or high waisted bottoms.

Be careful not to show off your lower body, which can be avoided by wearing fit and flare dresses or skirts.

Hourglass Body Type

With a hourglass body type, you want to dress proportionally on top and bottom and really accentuate your waist. If you just put on a wide belt, your waist will look great. You want to maintain balance on top and bottom, although you can still show off your legs with skinny jeans.

Top Hourglass Body Type With a top hourglass body type, you have a bust that is larger than your hips, but an amazingly defined waist. It’s best to try to make your bust proportionate to your bottoms or vice versa to balence your look. Showing off your waist with belts will bring attention to one of your greatest assests as well.

Oval Body Type Oval body types have a large bust, narrow waist and larger midsection.

Sometimes it can be hard to figure out how to make your eyes pop with makeup without going overboard. Here are our tips from the editors to make any eye color look amazing everyday!

SUGGESTIONS Shadows: darks browns copper tones

Apply a dark brown shadow or dark eyeliner to your upper lashline to bring defintion and to line your eye. Then, apply a light copper tone to your lid taking it past slightly above your crease on the outer area of your eye.

A lot of teens suffer from the consequences of acne and many don’t know what causes it or how to make it stop. Dr. Laura Speck of Westlake Dermatology answered the most frequently asked questions for our editors and gave us the real reasons behind why acne happens and how to make it dissappear.

Most problems for teens are individual and specific to them, but most share one common problem: acne.

Acne comes in numerous shapes, forms and can occur at any moment anywhere.

“Acne is a problem for most teens because of the hormone levels that occur during puberty, causing acne to rage,” Dr. Laura Speck of Westlake Dermatology says.

Westlake Dermatology’s website describes the differing types of acne in detail ranging from mild to severe forms (see visual). Acne is a condition that can be treated with medication or different regimens based on the needs of the individual and severity of their condition.

Dr. Speck says, “The type of treatment you should seek for your acne

is always based on the person. Products that might work for someone might not work for the next person. It’s all based on your skin type and how you react to certain medications or products.”

Acne really is specific for every person. Don’t expect that the regimen your friend uses will work for you as well because most regimens have to be customly created, which is why it is in the best interest of teens suffering from acne to see or contact a dermatologist so that they can be evaluated by a professional. Teens with mild acne may find their fit by simply experimenting with different products available at retail stores which, depending on the contents of the cleanser or product, could eliminate their minor blemishes.

The first step to doing that is not touching your face often and washing your face twice a day with a basic cleanser. It is also a good idea to continue using your acne products, even when you have a clear face, if only once a day instead of every day and night, so that acne will not come back.

ALBUM RELEASES UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX Bruno Mars Bruno Mars’ last album, “DooWops and Hooligans,” was a huge success with chart topping hits such as ‘Just The Way You Are’ and ‘Grenade,’ but Mars’ new album brings his reggae pop fusion music style to a new level.

“Unorthodox Jukebox’ features tunes that he says brings oldfashioned fun into modern day music sounds. Mars told MTV, “It’s very VHS-y. I love that. It takes me back to my childhood.” Mars’ new album brings his unique and emotional sound into a set of new songs, such as the new single ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ that has been compared to sounds from the band The Police. This is a must have set of songs for pop lovers and will be sure to top charts following its premiere this month; look out for the album’s showcase this year!

ARTPOP Lady Gaga Lady Gaga is again taking risks with her soon to come album “Artpop.” Gaga’s album will feature more modern types of music for her fans to enjoy, but some might be a little “too modern for radio,” Gaga told MTV, which may result in the album being split into two volumes. The potential two volume collection will include one with radio friendly music and another that takes additional music and content risks. Gaga’s album will feature collaborations with multiple artists, such as Azealia Banks and Zedd, and plans to again push the limits of pop music worldwide. Gaga’s album will feature new futuristic pop sounds, “make history,” and will captivate her millions of ‘little monster’ fans worldwide. Look for this album’s release sometime in 2013!

TRUE BELIEVERS Darius Rucker Darius Rucker, singer of the hit country song ‘Alright,’ features his smooth country sound in his new album “True Believers.”

The album was directed and created around the idea that when Rucker switched bands and sounds in 2008, those that still supported him are his true fans and he will always owe his success to them. Rucker tells The Boot, “We really payed attention to what our friends and fans were telling us on the road. The result is an album that I’m so proud of because my fans really have been the true believers since I released my first single to country radio.” Rucker’s album features his single ‘True Believers’ and more country tunes that relate to relationships with others. You can look for this album in stores in January 2013.

METALLIC Miley Cyrus Miley Cyrus, the former star of the hit show “Hannah Montana,” is now releasing another solo album titled “Metallic.” Her newest album is set to release sometime in 2013 and will feature collaberations with many producers responsible for chart topping hits of the last year. Cyrus told Billboard, “I wanna make a sick record.” Cyrus hasn’t released many details regarding song choices or the sound for the album, but continues to reenforce the idea that she will work until it’s perfect. Billboard was also told by Cyrus, “It’s been really, really fun. This whole year all I’ve really dedicated life to has been the album.” Miley Cyrus lovers and fans can expect a fantastic album from this young star in early 2013 that will surely take risks never taken before by the artist.

ARTIST COMEBACKS

The Mavericks We have greatly missed the nineties country music band The Mavericks. Their music has been referred to as the holy grail of country and their long hiatus in the music world was a disappointment to all, but their comeback is all the talk in the music world.

They have not played on a stage together since 2003. Soon after, they had a video released of them playing a live concert at Stubbs Barbecue in Austin, Texas, but for the past eight or so years, we have heard nothing about them. In 2011, they announced their plans to reunite for a tour in 2012. They signed with Valory Music Co. (a branch of Big Machine Records), and released an extended play called Suited up and Ready, and charted with Born to be Blue. There are plans for a full-length record, In Time, to be released in January 2013.

The Shins

The indie rock band, The Shins, were brought to fame in the late 1990s when they released the EP Nature Bears a Vacuum, which brought with it a lot of attention to their style, and a full band was formed. Since then, fame and fortune have been brought to the band by their immense success in the music world.

In 2008, the band’s contract with Sub pop expired, and the band decided to produce their next album through their lead singer’s, James Mercer’s, record label Aural Apothecary. In the four years after, the assembly of the band was changed and no new music was written. They announced that they would release a new album Port of Morrow in March 2012. It earned generally good reviews, with one hit single Simple Song, which was widely received with praise.

Owl City

Owl City, with an electronica sound created by a single member Adam Young, is a hit artist with an original sound. With the release of their single Fireflies in 2009, Owl City was a huge hit, but was soon after forgotten until “Good Time,” a hit single of 2012. Owl City collaberated with Carly Rae Jepsen, singer of Call Me Maybe, and created a single with an upbeat tune and sound for the summer.

Argo In this movie directed by Ben Affleck, six Americans trapped in Iran during the 1980 Iranian hostage crisis are rescued in a top secret operation run by the CIA. There are aspects of action, comedy, and history. If you’re a fan of intense scenes and unorthodox plans, this is the perfect movie for you.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter As one may guess from the title of this movie, this is about Abe Lincoln as a vampire hunter. Now, not only is the premise absolutely ridiculous, but it takes about 30 minutes for the movie to actually become interesting. For the entirity of the film, you will find yourself disappointed for watching..

The Perks of Being a Wallflower This sweet coming of age story will leave you in tears. The film focuses on a young boy who must go through the trials of life and his new friends who help him through them. I would highly recommend this movie to those who enjoy mature themes, or someone with similar coming of age struggles.

One for the Money Katherine Heigl stars as a young woman who has just lost her dead-end job as a Macy’s clerk and gets a job as a bounty hunter. This movie is very clichéd and one seen hundreds of times before; the jokes are not original and the acting is mediocre. I would not recommend this film for anyone.

Looper This action is based in the future. It focuses on a young gunman hired by a mob, to kill his future self. This is a plot never before seen on film and it is executed wonderfully. The acting, as well as Joseph Gordon Levitt, is delightful. The plot line turns with every new discovery and keeps you constantly engaged. Anyone can enjoy this movie, so buy your ticket now.

Snow White and the Huntsman As with any movie starring Kristen Stewart, this movie is not enjoyable. The performance is only believable from about two actors, although for the first time, Kristen Stewart actually smiled. The praise would have been more positive to Disney’s ‘Snow White’ being released in 3D.

The Avengers In “Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’,” six superheroes are brought together to defeat the demigod Loki who has made it his mission to take over the Earth. This film brings together six talented actors and actresses with a stimulating plot line. This film has an abundance of comedy, as well as action and hints of romance.

The Grey This film, starring Liam Neeson, focuses on a group of people stranded in the wild of Alaska who are haunted by a pack of wolves. This movie doesn’t have much of a plot and it is full of storylines that have been produced time and time again. This movie contains gore, and very intense scenes not sutible for certain audiences.

The Dark Knight Rises The newest installation of the Batman series has the best cast yet in the whole seires, including Christian Bale and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ a terrorist, Bane (Hardy), starts wreaking havoc on Gotham city and the Dark Knight returns to save the city despite their dislike of him.

John Carter A civil war veteran, John Carter, is asked to join the army once again, but refuses. He then hides in a cave and is transported to Mars where he learns of unreal things. This movie has a sluggish and confusing plot line and it’s execution makes it even worse. The acting is not impressive and the directing is not up to par.

They have trainers to help them keep in shape for their busy lifestyles. Those same trainers that keep the stars positively glowing with health have some tips for you!

Halle Berry, and Jessica Alba’s trainer, Ramona Braganza, told Glamour magazine,“one of the biggest fitness mistakes women make is just doing cardio.” She explains that by only doing cardio you do maintain a thin figure, but it doesn’t have any substance. She says that by doing workouts for muscular strength throughout the body you can gain a lean, slightly muscular figure and a faster metabolism.

Jackie Warner, a celebrity fitness trainer is known for featuring on the show “Work Out” in 2006. She tells Glamour, “Unless you’re injured, it’s time to give up the girly ones with your knees on the floor,” explaining that if you want the real workout, you’re going to need to give 110% and do what’s challenging. “Your body is very smart; it’ll adjust to any workout routine in six weeks, so you’ve got to switch things up,” Jackie Warner tells Glamour magazine. Variety is always required in workouts, so after you get comfortable with a workout, switch to something more challenging.

Lastly, always be safe while working out. Never risk your body in any situation, even if you think it might give great results. Don’t attempt a work out without proper stretching and warm ups and don’t attempt anything you know your body isn’t capable of. Check to make sure you have the right equipment, drink lots of water and wear the right clothes; always be prepared to work!
