Meet the Team Nicky is a small Chinese-Greek freshman at the Liberal Arts & Science Academy. By day she’s your normal teenage girl. Full of laughter and always looking on the bright side. Making a joke out of everything and channeling her inner child, there’s never a boring day with Nicky around. Always insisting that school work comes first Nicky excels at more than academics, she’s a natural leader and great person.

Jeanea is a freshman at LASA that defies all stereotypes with her intense music, awesome outfits and creepy glances out of the corner of her eye. She attends the Liberals Arts and Science Academy and is facinated with the ‘rave scene’. She becomes an inhuman beast when given pencil in paper in the beauty that she sketches. She is all around very silly, likes hugs, and is constantly giggling. Hardcore in some aspects but always kind hearted, she’s an artist at heart.

Wilber is a freshman currently attending the Liberal Arts and Science Academy. Wilber loves playing soccer; He played in the LBJ soccer team for the 2009-2010 season. Wilber enjoys lifestyle and music just like his group members. He also enjoys fashion and new trends. Wilber writes stories that he believes can relate to teens all over Austin. His favorite hobbies are playing soccer, listen to music and hanging out with friends.

A Letter From The Editors Citrous is a magazine made by three high school kids in Central Texas. We’re not professionals, at all, and we don’t claim to be; At least not when it comes to making magazines. But as teenagers, we are professionals at our best. We are music lovers, soccer players, Austinites, and children at heart. We stand for promoting and reporting entertainment and lifestyle issues in the most enjoyable way we think possible. Citrous, not to be confused with “citrus” is an adjective meaning completely and utterly awesome beyond comprehension and severe enough to cause mental instability. Want to know more? No Pass, No Play

BY WILBER JAIMES

“W

e have lost another great soccer player,” Coach Martinez said. To a locker-room full of with soccer players who had been chosen at try outs and were ready to be told if they were eligible to play soccer. The whole room was quiet and tense. We all knew that we had lost a player because of his grades. No one wanted to miss out and not be able to play because of their academics. Who would be eligible? Who had passed? These were the questions everyone was asking. Other people were talking among themselves about how many students were not allowed to play because of the Texas policy “No pass, No play.” In LBJ High School it’s common that many of the students who try out will be chosen to play but when the report cards come many leave the team because they did not pass their classes. Even though the policy seems unfair, it’s beneficial to every student

04 . Citrous~ Summer 2010

athlete in the long run. If they pass their classes that demonstrate that they care about being able to play their favorite sport and that they will try to do anything to join, even if it takes lots of time and hard work The “No Pass No Play” policy exists only in some parts of the United States, but it should be enforced through the entire country. Opponents of the “No Pass No Play” rule says that the No Pass No Play policy has a negative effect on students who are trying to be enrolled in sports. “Before the season started I was really worried about my grades because I knew the ‘No Pass No Play’ policy could deny me the privilege to play my favorite sport,” said Hugo from Bowie High School. Hugo was denied the privilege to play soccer for the first part of the season. The “No Pass No Play was a motivation for me because I worked harder and I was able to play soccer for the last part of the season.”

According to Dr. Victoria Martin, a child psychiatrist in Richardson Texas. She thinks that it’s only damaging the dreams of students to play sports and become professional athletes. Many students I see as patients have definitely suffered because of it,” she says. “It could be better titled the ‘No pass, No life’ law for many children.” This is only leading to anger; frustration and hopelessness said Dr. Martin. Students, who are not eligible, might be interested in doing other activities that might lead them to no good. According to some students from LBJ it’s only ruining their opportunity to be involved in sports. According to the Springfield Public Schools Athletic Director Mark Fisher “It would create a disincentive for a student to take harder courses. If a student knows that a single failing grade carries such weight, he or she might be inclined to enroll in safer, less challenging courses.” (Cont. on page)

Raving and Drugs:

The Controversy

Photo Cred: X. Jeanea Davis

You adjust your Tripps©. Tighten your corset. And pop one more ecstasy tablet. Enter with confidence and take in the music and lights with a new found twist. Everything is more intense and you feel like the world is moving in slow motion. You blink once, and now you can see music and hear the lights… BY JEANEA DAVIS

R

aves are fun, open and may often serve as an opportunity to do drugs. In the end, it’s up to a person’s self discipline and maturity level whether or not they will actually use drugs. Some might say that so many teens wouldn’t do drugs if the opportunity wasn’t presented to them, so raves are a bad influence. Although it is true drug abuse is a problem, raves are not completely to blame. Raves, for some, are about

having fun, partying and enjoying the music and lights. But it’s not as if the drug abuse in raves is going unnoticed. The word “Responsibility” was added to the acronym PLUR to make PLURR (peace, love, unity, respect, responsibility), during the mid to late 90s to promote awareness of increased drug overdoses at raves. Electronic Music Defense and Education Fund (EMDEF), Dance Safe, and the Toronto Raver Info Project advocate harm reducing approaches to enjoy-

ing a rave. (Information Courtesy of Wikipedia: PLUR). It doesn’t take much to NOT spend your money on drugs, or just NOT use them. For some, it may seem like less effort to just go along with what every one else is doing, than to do what’s logically right. And to some the cost of doing drugs: addiction, complications with health, and sometimes death are less significant than their high. Those people shouldn’t go to raves, because it can ruin the experience for other ravers, and essentially kill them both. One night can end up becoming a lifetime of regrets. The types of drugs that have been known to be explored in raves consist of ecstasy, GHB (Gammahydroxy butyrate) or “liquid ecstasy”, Rohypnol or ‘roofies’, heroin, cocaine, prescription drugs, hallucinogenic mushrooms or “shrooms”. Most of these drugs have negative effects including overdose, lose of memory, and death. Rohypnol or “roofies” are used for date rape. Usually girls and/ or guys who are already “rolling” or have used ecstasy are victims to date rape, because it makes them easy targets, and causes amnesia. So, those who refrain from taking drugs are in the end, at a lower risk for date rape. There’s not much anyone can do to really change the actions of others, but if everyone was responsible for themselves and chose not to do drugs at raves, maybe these dance parties wouldn’t be looked down upon as much and maybe people wouldn’t associate raves with drugs. It doesn’t matter if the opportunity is presented as long as you have the strength to think for yourself, it shouldn’t matter. Raves can be, and are very often enjoyed WITHOUT drugs. There is such a thing as ‘raving sober’. These are fun dance parties are home to brilliant dancers, sensational music, marvelous light shows and some pretty interesting people. You don’t need to be “rolling” or high to appreciate the prodigious allure and awesomeness of raves.

Thin Isn’t Everything A closer look into why society should think again about how much being thin matters....

E

very once in a while, I hear two girls behind me sitting talking about how they wish they were thinner. Other times I see a group of people in the hall who snicker as someone who’s a little heavy walks by. Each time I see a situation like this, I become internally sickened as I realize how many people are under the impression that weight defines them. But this doesn’t have to be the case; there are several reasons why worrying about being thin is overrated. People, especially women these days are under a lot of pressure to stay skinny. But the idea that beauty is defined by weight is an addictively misleading

06 . Citrous~ Summer 2010

BY NICKY MANITZAS thought. Firstly, weight does not accurately reflect how healthy someone is. Although some people would disagree, weight is not a direct reflection of how healthy a person is. According to the American Heart Association website, cholesterol levels, amount of energy, exercise, and other things are a better reflection of healthiness than weight, and people don’t necessarily have to be skinny to have a balanced level of all those things. Therefore, the health aspect of worrying about weight is often overrated. Another reason why trying to be thin is overrated is because in terms of attractiveness, men are generally more

attracted to women with curves and a “juicier” body rather than a thinner, bony woman. Advertisements, movies, and the rest of the media like associate thin figures with the standard of beauty. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty, the average man probably wouldn’t say the same. Even though it all comes down to a guy’s preference, it’s a silly idea to think that a woman will pick up more guys if she is really thin, because that’s not true. It will just select for a guy that cares a lot about weight, which isn’t necessarily even good for women in a relationship. So to conclude, trying to achieve a thinner figure for one’s dating life is also overrated, and helps nothing. A third and final major reason why people should not promote or put pressure on people to have a thinner figure is because it lowers self esteem and can lead to eating disorders. Bulimia, anorexia, and depression can be results of low self esteem, which is all often caused by pressure from society. The idea that to be skinny is pretty creates a mind frame that makes many youthful people have a depressing or disappointing image of themselves. Medicinenet.com states that more and more young adults are considering or committing suicide because of weight issues. These statistics could be lowered if the media and profiting companies were to stop pushing the mentality that being thin is the only way to look good. Beauty is a definition that revolves around opinion. And how much does an opinion really even matter? Opinions aren’t official rankings, nor do they set standards that people should always follow. Beauty is an opinion; therefore we can say the same thing about it. Someone is pretty because they are thin? Ok, there’s one opinion. Here’s a second one: everyone has a different definition of beauty, but no matter what the definition, people’s weight should not define them, which is why worrying about it so much is overrated.

When creating a playlist for any occasion, whether it be a dance party, a prom, or a ball, keep in mind the people that will attend, events that will be happening, and what people request. If you are DJ’ing a party, and taking requests, it can become overwhelming. A few things to remember: You don’t have to play everything the people request. Look over the request and find the genre most requested. Find songs that are in that genre. You can’t please everyone. No matter where you go people are going to like different things. This playlist targets dance, pop, & rock. Many other playlist for dance parties might target more urban music; rap, hiphop, r&b, etc. Whatever you do, make sure to at least try to appeal to the party-goers.

Fighting to Defend With more than 20 years of experience and a reputation that stands for him, Tony Diaz is ready to help. BY WILBER J.

A

fter traveling all over the world Tony Diaz has learned how different and diverse people are. “Even though I was afraid of moving to another country I found new friends, teachers and also people who had a huge impact on who I am as a person.” Diaz had to travel a lot because his dad was in the US. Army .Traveling all over the world helped him a lot to know different and interesting places. Tony was born in Killeen but has traveled to many places such as Puerto Rico, France, Germany, New Jersey Oklahoma and Japan. “I remember my favorite teacher, it was back when I was in fourth grade I lived in Japan she was the best teacher anyone can ever have.” Tony Diaz works in Downtown Austin in the beautiful Frost bank; Diaz has more than 20 years of experience. Diaz has helped lots of people. “Being a lawyer has taught me how to help people in ways I had never dreamed off because he can relate to my clients . “My parents are the best parents in the whole world,” he says According to Diaz his parents were a great help and inspiration for him. “My parents were my main influence to become a lawyer,” Diaz said. “My dad once told me that if I liked helping people and I was great at giving speeches and talking to people that I should become a lawyer,” Diaz explained Diaz believes that without his parents he would have turned out totally different. Even though Tony always dreamed about becoming an astronaut but he realized that it Would take a lot of time from his family.

08 . Citrous~ Summer 2010

Tony Diaz takes time away from his work to talk to people about the importance of being educated. Diaz gives lectures to fellow coworkers, friends and also to students in high schools. He thinks that being educated is the most important thing to have a good life. “I have four main important points in my lectures, because that has helped me with my career,” Diaz says They are to read, save money, being compassionate and voting. “Everyone should read with passion, because you will find new things that perhaps you did not know before.” “The second main point is to save money, if you make 1 dollar you should always save 10 cents and by the end you will see the reward,” Diaz said. Diaz describes himself in one word: compassionate. “It describes me because I want people to treat me how I treat them, also I love to help people in as many ways I can,” he says “Everyone should be Compassionate to

everyone else, help the need and treat everyone how you want to be treated” Diaz also believes the most important thing anyone can do is vote. “Its extremely important, votes count, and they can help bring change,” Diaz said. Diaz has been a lawyer since 1986 “My first case I believe has been my most important case because I learned a lot from it.” “I was really nervous because I had never been with such pressure on my shoulders” he says About 25 years ago an African American male was working in a construction zone in downtown Austin, when suddenly a thunderstorm approached every worker including his client ran for shelter.” My client’s boss came and told him to go tie the demolition ball with the scaffolds so it would not harm the construction. My client was put in a hard situation.” He was told to do it or he would lose his job,” Diaz said Since he had a family he needed to feed he went and risked his life. As soon as my client holds both metals the worst happened, he got electrocuted” The company denied everything and said that, “It was an act of God.” And that they were not responsible for what ever to that man. Diaz had to work hard and read books that would help him win the case. “I worked day and night because I knew we could win,” Diaz said Mr. Diaz won the case and convinced the jury that what had happened to that man was not an act of god. The family was compensated and Diaz was excited to win his first case.” I could not believe it, since then I’ve worked hard to win most of my cases.

Gothic Lolita

The Look Originated in Japan, primarily influ-

enced by elegant Victorian clothing. It’s unique in it’s addition of gothic elements. The beauty in it can be seen as similar to those as “cute” Victorian children or “adorable” porcelain dolls, rather than “sexy”. Most who consider themselves Lolita, don’t do it for the attention of men. You can dress up this style as a costume or as every day clothing. But there’s a distinct difference! Cosplay lolita is usually worn for anime or game conventions & are crudely put together & usually far too revealing. Things to Look Into This not your ideal style? Before you rule out this style completely take into consideration the many different types of lolita there are including, Sweet loli, Classic Loli, Punk Loli, Wa Loli, Qi Loli (More of Chinese based Loli than Japanese), Hime Loli, Guro Loli, & Sailor Lolita. All you have to do is find YOUR Lolita. World Order Authentic lolita clothing stores are limited outside of Japan especially in the US so I’d suggest shopping online. American designers have tried & usually failed at recreating this look.

Classic Preppy The Look Preppy is a shortened version of the word

preparatory, used in relation to northeastern private university-preparatory schools. The preppy look has gone in and out of style since the 1950’s when it was introduced. Classic preps frequently dress formally; the teenage prep often models the appearance of a young professional adult. Things to Look Into The clothing worn by traditional preps can be seen as bland by those unaccustomed to it. Frequently wearing inconspicuous clothing, the styles usually worn by preps are nonetheless more expensive than most other styles. But you can find just as good knock-offs that could easily pass as name brands. World Order There are many brands that can be identified as preppy such as L.L. Bean, Ralph Lauren, Lilly Pulitzer, Lacoste, Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines, Jack Wills, and J. Crew, Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale. The important thing is putting it together to fit your personality.

Spunky Punky

1970’s

The Look Punk fashion has many branches and there’s no one way to perfect the look. A lot of what ‘punk’ stands for is being an individual. Adding your own originality to this look is essential. Some things that are always associated with punk fashion is a outgoing rebellious personality and in some ways that bold personality is also essential when it comes to considering oneself to be ‘punk’. Things to Look Into This not your ideal style? There are more versions of punk that may appeal to you more such as Glam punk, Anarcho-punk, Crust punk, horror punk; which is borderline ‘goth’, Cowpunk, Skate punk, and Pop Punk; which is closer to laid back ‘scene’ than ‘punk’. friendly arrangement of desks, a long whiteboard, a homey couch, and student work posted on the walls. The friendly, inviting vibe that radiates from Michael Scaccia’s classroom is not so different from the one given out by his personality. As the bell rings at LASA high school and students slowly fill his classroom, Mr. Scaccia greets some by their name, and welcomes others with a goofy grin. It wasn’t until five years ago that Scaccia began to express interest in teaching. Before becoming a teacher, Scaccia worked a colorful variety of jobs, including working at a golf course, getting involved in politics, and being a full-time musician. These jobs were satisfaction enough until about five years back, when Scaccia found knowledge in something that one of his friends told him. “A buddy of mine said that I was kind of wasting my time working in the golf business and that I really should look at doing something much more enriching. And I got into it [teaching], and I loved it.” But no one would have to hear Scaccia say it in order to notice

his love for the job; his bubbly mood, even on days when he is exhausted, says it all. During the already cramped free time that he has, a hobby that Scaccia loves pursuing is music. He was a full-time musician for a short while, right before his teaching career hit off. “I started playing music about 8 years ago, and just completely fell in love with it.” But juggling music and teaching isn’t all peaches and cream for Scaccia. Some nights, a combination of band gigs out of town, mandatory grading, and lesson preparations leave little time for resting. “It just requires a lot of time. It requires a lot of focus, and it requires a lot of missing sleep,” sighs Scaccia with a half-smile.

Regardless, many students still enjoy playing sports for recreation, school spirit, and fun. Exercise can be fun and healthy, but something else comes first: grades. Grades should take the main priority. Why? Focusing on studies helps students build their foundation for a good future. According to Justin Padron from the Southlake Carroll School District, “If you don’t take care of your school work, you shouldn’t be able to play,” Mr. Padron, an 18- year- old said. “If you sign up for the class, you should be able to handle it. If you

“Fightng to Defend” Diaz spends most of his day at work; when he comes home he starts analyzing what to do to remodel his house at Westlake Hills. Diaz recently moved to a new house with his fiancé who he calls Nena. “I have future dreams, and I can see my house finished and remodeled looking really beautiful,” Diaz explains Diaz recently moved to his new house where he plans to remodel and finish in two years; he wants to make a pond and many more arrangements. “I want to finish this project because I want to make Nena happy and also to have a beautiful house,” Mr. Diaz said. Diaz unfortunately has to bring his work home, depending on the importance of the case. “I try to manage my work

can’t handle it, you should go see your counselor and get out of it.” As Mr.Padron says it’s better to change the schedule if the class is to hard and can make the player not eligible to play, than to stay and fail. The No Pass No Play rule can be an extra motivation to students, who otherwise don’t care about school, only about sports. Some students only try their hardest when the season starts, so that they are able to be passing when they make the team. But the No Pass No Play rule checks in on students every six weeks or grading period, to prohibit them from slacking off. The LBJ High School soccer coach believes that students who want to play in the team should not slack after the season is over. He says that many of the students tend to have low grades and don’t work as hard as they do before the season starts. Discipline can be achieved because of the no pass no play policy. Coaches believe that the policy will make students more responsible and better students. As Coach Martinez stated and my family but sometimes it takes more than just trying, but I never get my family and my work, mixed together,” he said Diaz releases the stress by relying on his hobbies. “I love reading, fishing and gardening but my favorite hobby I think would be reading because I learn new things every time.” “I enjoy my life as a lawyer, that’s why I do it; I want to help people and that’s why I got into the business,” Diaz says.

when he was choosing his players for the 2010 soccer season, “I need responsible students who will not let me down because of their grades.” Coaches prefer students with the highest grades because it shows that they are more responsible and it lets them know that they are trying hard in school because they don’t want to miss the season. In the real world smartness will defeat athletism. The policy should be enforced to every student in the United States because it’s helping students be more interested in school and not only sports. The “No Pass No Play” is a policy that has promising effects. The statistics show that students are trying hard and passing their classes. The policy shows people how some students can be great athletes and outstanding students. Everyone who was in the locker room was excited because they had been told that they were elegible to play because they had passed their six weeks.
