Aubrie Edmond currently attends LASA High School, but she was born in Evanston, Illinois. She enjoys running track, creating music, and shopping. Aubrie enjoys fashion, and it has become a very large part of her lifestyle, so she chose to write about it. Her feature article focuses on how fashion has evolved through the eras, and to get a full idea of how things have changed, she interviewed a fashion designer, a modeling agent, and a boutique owner. Through creating this magazine, she has learned about the process of graphic design, interview techniques, and the different ways fashion has changed over time. She has even landed a summer job opportunity from the skills she learned. She also got to enjoy writing and designing with her two friends, Aly and Eve.

Her feature article, which examines the fashion design process, has allowed Eve to learn more about what actually goes into the clothes that people wear. Eve has enjoyed the process of creating this magazine because she has gotten to learn more about something that she previously did not know much about and has also gotten to spend time with Aly and Aubrie.

It’s 2018: fanny packs are back, movements such as #MeToo, #TimesUp, Black Lives Matter and March for Our Lives are dominating the year, and the fashion statements that these movements bring with them are prominent as well. Fashion is constantly changing, from the past to the present, and looking toward the future.

“A lot of fashion derives from something from the past,” said Beehive Boutique employee Kandia Nzinga. Current fashion trends are being repeated from the past, and styles such as “the 70s maribou style, bright colors, big lapels, full-fledged 80s hair, acrylic earrings, oversized jackets and shoulder pads will be seen next,” Nzinga said. Past decades that are currently trending

include the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s and a few trends from the 2000s. In order to understand current fashion trends, it is important to understand fashion trends through every era.

THE 1970s

The 1970s, often referred to as the disco era, was home to a major wave of the fight for women’s rights, as well as rights for the African-American community and the gay community. This era was also the time of the anti-war movement and the Watergate scandal. The 70s fashion scene was all about individuality. Many styles were popularized by the actress Farrah Fawcett, as well as by models such as Lauren Hutton, Margaux Hemingway, Beverly Johnson, Gia Carangi, Janice Dickinson, Cheryl

Tiegs, Jerry Hall, and Iman.

According to fashion-era.com, women wore bell bottoms, frayed jeans, midi skirts and maxi dresses in the early 70s.

Turtlenecks, flannel shirts, bell bottoms, tie-dye clothing, sweaters and sweater vests were all popular for men.

In the mid-70s, mood rings, Birkenstocks and loafers were all the rage in women’s fashion. Many men wore jeans, sweaters, sweatshirts, leather coats, rain coats and zip-up cardigans.

The late 70s brought crop tops, tube tops, daisy dukes and disco style to women’s fashion. Puffer vests, flare jeans, untucked collared shirts and disco style were popular in men’s fashion.

THE 1980s

The 1980s brought the aerobics craze, along with the Cold War and Reaganomics. Movies such as “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink” became instant classics. Platforms such as MTV heavily influenced teen fashion and so did singers like Madonna and Michael Jackson.

According to harpersbazaar. com, women wore ripped jeans, leotards, tights, sweatpants and tracksuits. Many men wore athletic clothes in muted colors, thin leather neckties, membersonly jackets, leather jackets, V-neck sweaters, turtlenecks, dress shirts, IZOD clothing, tapered pants and loafers without socks.

In the mid-80s, many women wore mini-skirts, bulky sweaters, jumpsuits, pastels, fur coats, beanies, wide or thin belts with

dresses and shoulder pads. A lot of men wore halannel vests, cowboy boots, flannels, hoodies, nylon jackets and gold rings.

As reported by fashion.telegraph. co.uk, women wore patterns, pop art, halterneck crop tops, babydoll dresses, cowboy boots, Keds and ballet flats. Denim trends such as rhinestone jeans and embroidered jeans also became prominent. Women also wore Champion sweatshirts and hoodies, minidresses, leggings, scrunchies, oversized tops and casual sneakers in the early 1990s.

Many men wore high-waisted jeans, Champion brand sweatshirts and hoodies, gray Tommy Hilfiger jackets, Guess denim shirts, graphic print t-shirts, bomber jackets, baseball jackets, flannel shirts, band t-shirts, Converse All Stars, Doc Marten boots and aviator sunglasses.

Later in the decade, women wore short skirts, reversible insideout coats, rugby sweatshirts, sweater dresses, Keds, Sperrys, pastel shortalls, one-sided off the shoulder sweatshirts and stirrup pants. Men wore Doc Martens, parachute pants, leather jackets, bowling shirts and trench coats.

THE 1990s

The 1990s were a time of fun hairstyles, denim-inspired outfits and grunge accessories. This era explored movements such as the anti-globalization movement and the neoliberalism movement.

It also was the beginning of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Artists like Gwen Stefani, the Spice Girls and Britney Spears heavily influenced 90s fashion, as well as actors and actresses such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman.

In the middle of the 90s, many women wore clothing classified as grunge fashion, such as flannel shirts, ripped jeans, mom jeans, Doc Martens, combat boots, band t-shirts, oversized knit sweaters, ripped tights, Birkenstocks and hiking boots. For men, there was also a 1970s revival. Baja jackets, baggy jeans, basketball shorts, Attire

plaid pants, tracksuits, ski goggles, baseball caps, and hoodies were popular.

At the end of the 90s, the 1970s came back into play in women’s fashion. It showcased trends from the disco era such as pleather pants, metallic clothing, bell bottoms and tube tops. Women’s fashion also featured dark stonewash jeans, spaghetti strap crop tops, Adidas and Nike trainers, Wellington boots, jelly bracelets and jelly shoes. Men wore safari jackets, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. At this time, grunge fashion disappeared due to the rising popularity of more form fitting clothes and brighter colors.

THE 2000s

The 2000s brought AOL, body glitter, Razr phones and MySpace.

Actors and actresses such as Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Ben Affleck, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie were very influential and so were artists such as the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, U2, Mariah Carey, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Madonna, Jay-Z and Beyonce.

According to refinery29.com, women’s fashion showcased crop tops, aviator sunglasses, hoop earrings, tube tops, chunky sweaters, Skechers and Ugg boots.

Cargo pants, hip huggers, low rise jeans, flare jeans, Burberrys, distressed denim, newsboy caps and trucker hats were all popular for women in the early 2000s. Men wore fleeces, puffer jackets, cargo pants, rugby shirts, forest green turtleneck sweaters, trucker hats, tracksuits and lumberjack-type shirts.

pants, tube tops, and bell-skeeved shirts. Men were seen in cargo shorts, windbreakers, muscle shirts, aviator jackets, Steve Madden ankle boots, Adidas sneakers and Converse All Stars.

In the late 2000s, there was a second wave of 1980s revival in women’s fashion. Knitted sweater dresses, slap bracelets, skater dresses, ballet flats, black spandex leggings, bubble skirts, hoodies, cargo pants, cropped jackets, jeggings, ripped acid wash skinny jeans, gladiator sandals and Crocs were also popular. For men, Hawaiian shirts, letterman jackets, tartan flannel shirts, V-neck sweaters, Nike Air Jordans, ski jackets, graphic hoodies, horn-rimmed glasses, Rolex wristwatches and motorcycle boots were all popular.

“Fashion tends to take inspiration from all years, but clearly the 90s have come back into play here recently,” said modeling agency owner and photographer Devin Mazza. Currently, the revival of 1990s fashion is making a big splash in the current fashion world. Trends like flannels worn tied around the waist, baggy one size fits all hoodies, cardigans and Adidas Superstars are all making a comeback.

High fashion brands like Gucci, Chanel, Versace, Calvin Klein and Coach are popular; casual fashion brands such as Adidas, Nike, Birkenstocks, Vans, Converse, Doc Martens and Sperrys are currently in style. “This season there have been so many different styles popping up, I’ve seen Jeremy Scott bring back highlighter colors, and then you see designers like Alexander Wang bringing in all black and leather,” said Mazza.

Conflicting trends have been an occurrence for many years, such

as the pastel movement and the muted colors movement, both gaining momentum in the 1980s. “I think they’re such a trend because everyone wants something different.

Designers take inspiration from the past and apply it toward the present and so do boutique owners and other professions in the fashion world. “My aesthetic is street but definitely fashion forward.

I like to try different things all the time. I love 80s fashion, but my inspiration is always in the now,” said fashion designer Samantha Plasencia.

“We are definitely classic with a modern twist, and we pay homage to the 80s and 70s,” said Nzinga.

“I wish I knew what trends are coming next,” said Plasencia.

Many designers and people in the fashion world believe that future fashion is going to keep up the trend of borrowing fashion from the past and modernizing it.

F

Fashion design is not just a hobby. For Sloane Lenz, it is a form of self-expression. It is how she, along with many other fashion designers, tell a story and convey an idea. The 21-year-old professional avant-garde fashion designer describes the fashion design process as a way to show an emotion or convey an idea. This process is one that requires thought, feeling, and hard work.

When the professional designer has an idea or an emotion to convey, she looks to fashion design to make a physical representation of what she feels. That

emotion or concept that inspires Lenz to design a piece can originate from anywhere, depending on the fashion designer.

Lenz is largely inspired by music. “When I listen to music, I see a world of a person that I want to create or an idea that I want to get across,” Lenz said regarding her fashion design. Music gives the young artist inspiration, which then sets off a chain of ideas that Lenz will later put into physical form through clothing design.

In general, many different fashion designers gain inspiration from varying sources. Some fashion designers may strive to express certain political views through their clothing, while others may just want to channel a certain emotion into their pieces.

In order to actually turn their ideas into a physical creation, fashion designers must first go through the process of sketching and designing their pieces. This is a sort of rough draft of their design that helps them work out the kinks of their pieces.

For most fashion designers, the length of the fashion design process varies greatly.

For example, custom fashion designer Donna Davis said that it could take her up to six months to finish a design, depending on the client that she is personally designing for. “When I designed a seasonal collection, I started with a concept,” Davis said. She explained that the whole collection emerges when it is built upon a chosen concept — whether it is a specific

color palette, a certain type of fabric, or even a silhouette.

Like Davis, Lenz also bases her collections off of a certain idea or story, using “unconventional materials,” which she used often as a child and has learned to love. “Rather than going out and buying 30 yards of one material and then trying

to make it all fit that one theme, I kind of like to see it evolve out of just what comes my way,” Lenz said.

Whether fashion designers find inspiration from a story, a personal experience, or an emotion, all designers must go through a process of putting their ideas into physical form. In the months that it takes Davis to design pieces, the fashion designer takes time to work out the financing of the project, discuss the client’s vision for the clothing, and, most importantly, design the pieces.

To design a collection, Davis must choose patterns, materials, and colors and take measurements. Before completing all of these tasks, she must create sketches of the pieces she is designing and have them approved by her client.

Davis made several things regarding the fashion design process very clear. “You need to know your customer,” Davis said. In addition to being honest with your client and understanding what they envision in your work, Davis added that it is important that you stay true to yourself and your designing. “Don’t copy anyone,” she said. “Your particular vision is what will set you apart.”

Channeling emotion, expression, and hard work into a piece of clothing eventually yields not just an item of clothing but something more. Davis sees a form of confidence and self expression in her fashion design. “I enjoy making women feel confident about themselves,” she said. For Davis, fashion design is her way of sending good karma into the world. Making other women feel empowered through what they wear ensures Davis that she is doing her job well.

Meanwhile, Lenz does not even see fashion design as a formal job or profession, but as an essential aspect to culture and society. Fashion design “tells so much about a culture,” Lenz said, adding that what people wear tells so much about where a culture currently is and what direction that culture is going in. She implied that what people wear is a significant component of society’s progression. “The role in the world for a fashion designer is to capture what is going on in popular culture or just in the world and present that in a visual way,” Lenz said. Her words are true to the world of fashion — fashion designers see their work not as a strict profession with rigid guidelines but as a form of expression that allows them to send a message out into the world.

“These girls are on a mission, and they’re trying to find a new planet to live on because this is not a good one to be on,” Lenz said, referring to the story behind her newest collection. Lenz’s work will continue to act as visual representations of the stories and ideas that she comes up with by observing the world around her.

Nowadays, trends go in and out of style with the snap of a finger. Often times, how people express themselves is heavily shown in their appearance. The makeup, clothes and how the two compliment each other establish your personality even before you open your mouth. Models, makeup artists and drag queens are just a few of the jobs in the beauty industry that allow people to communicate their thoughts and feelings through cosmetics and clothing. The three may be completely different environments and occupations, but they do have their similarities.

Makeup artists apply makeup to clients, as well as practice on themselves. They can also apply makeup to models, who then model the makeup and/or outfits they are wearing. Drag queens do a little bit of both while applying their makeup and performing songs.

These males apply lively makeup to accentuate their features, while also modeling bold and, sometimes revealing, clothing to transform into a more feminine character. The three occupations are more connected than they might seem.

Personality and mood are big parts of style. What’s felt and experienced sways what parts of a person are exposed to the world. “I wear whatever and do whatever makeup I’m feeling,” says Cristal Lam, who works as a makeup artist.

When doing peoples’ makeup, achieving what the client wants to portray and what part of their style they want to show is a key element. While makeup artists do carry their artistic license with them, in the end, they have to please the customer. But, when they are doing their own makeup, they have the liberty to try new things and experiment with what they like depending on how they’re feeling.

As Cheeki, a proud drag queen of Austin puts it, “It just depends on my mood” Performing drag does have its benefits, like being able to serve any look anytime, but it also has its setbacks. “If it’s too hot outside, my eyebrows just will melt off,” Michael Reyna (also known as Cheeki Kahnt) says. Queens have to accomodate their makeup and clothing to the weather and occasion and still be able to fully express themselves.

When thinking of drag makeup, often times the first thing that comes to mind are the blocked out eyebrows that are drawn higher than usual in order to apply the maximum amount of eyeshadow. It’s not always about packing on the powder.

Living in such a hot environment causes queens to get creative. “During the summer I don’t cover my eyebrows, I use my natural brow, but I paint over them in more exaggerated sort of a way to give an illusion

of ‘oh she did block out her brows but she didn’t,’” Reyna says.

While performing and modeling, being able to embrace one’s self is very important. Posing in front of people and getting photos taken requires confidence. “I’ve done shoots with no makeup and my natural hair,” says Cassie Berry, who works as a model.

People oftentimes use hot tools on their hair to either get it from straight to curly or vice versa, but Berry embraces her natural curls when she models.

Modeling isn’t always just crazy clothes and makeup; there are some natural, no makeup, casual clothing shoots incorporated as well.

Reyna is also able to embrace who he is. “I’m a hairy chested, bald queen of Austin,” he says. A lot of the time, drag queens get laser hair removal or keep their facial hair tamed while not on the job, but Reyna has a different opinion.“I like my boy life; I love being a boy. My mom gave me this stuff that keeps the hair from growing back so frequently, and she was like ‘are you gonna use it?’ and I was like ‘honestly, no — I like to have my beard,’” he says.

Being able to transform between his boy life and his drag queen life is a way for him to have complete control and an outlet away from his everyday life. “I really love getting to create her from nothing and build her into whatever I want her to be,” says Reyna.

When he is Cheeki, he gets to get up on stage, sing his heart out and, at the end of the day, take off all of his makeup and live his boy life again. The art of drag is an outlet for ways of life that he does not portray on the every day basis.

Belmondo Tran-Lopez, another drag queen, says, “It empowers me and brings me confidence I would’ve never otherwise discovered”. Being able to transform in and out of people allows a new level of expression.

Makeup also isn’t limited to just one style. “I can do very natural makeup all the way to dramatic smokey eyes,” says Lam. A new person can be created everyday.

This resonates with Martin as she says “honestly, in my everyday life, I don’t dress anything like modeling. I have a very modest style; like plain jeans and a t-shirt. I have worn the same sweater for like three

Being able to do whatever makeup and wear whatever one wants is a major aspect of fashion.

Makeup artistry, modeling and drag all have many things in common. The main thing that draws the three occupations together the closest is the ability to express oneself however much they want to.

The slight limitations of each job, like not completely choosing clothes or makeup or not being able to have full makeup on, are outweighed by the desire to communicate feelings and emotions through art. Being able to control what one wants to convey and put out into the world is truly liberating.
