Larsen Gallery is pleased to present our 26th annual Fritz Scholder exhibition from February 10th through March 15th, 2022. Several notable paintings from Scholder’s most iconic series of Native Americans in the exhibition include Squatting Indian, 1969, an early work showing Francis Bacon’s influence in the Indian’s distorted face. Also included in the show are Three Indians on Horseback, 1971 and Indian on Horse from 1979, both exhibiting strong movement with the horse and riders, and American Portrait as an Apparition from 1975 is a striking example of portraiture in the exhibit. The exhibition also includes multiple works on paper including Study for Deformed Buffalo Dancer and Old Indian, both from 1971. Some of his more sought after 1970’s lithographs including Another Deco Indian and Patriotic Indian (State I) will also be on display, showcasing Scholder’s mastery of color and composition across multiple media.

In the 1980’s, Fritz Scholder continued exploring his series of American Portraits and the exhibition will include American Portrait #16 from 1981 and American Portrait #43 from 1982, both paintings showcasing Scholder as a master colorist. The exhibition also includes a departure of subject matter for the painter with Strawberry Fields #1 and Unicorn + Lion, both from 1988. After spending a decade painting primarily Native American subject matter and becoming known as the father of the New American Indian Movement, Scholder switched subject matter in the early 1980’s but maintained his excellence as a colorist throughout his career.

This exhibition also features several sculptures by Fritz Scholder including Eagle Fetish #4, 1975 that explores the combination of mixed media and bronze with a figure cloaked in rich red cloth adorned with Native American jewelry and symbolic buttons and pendants. This fresh work hails from a prominent collector and has not been in public view prior to this exhibition. The Offering, 1990 is a haunting sculpture combining hide, dried flowers and ribbons cascading from the hands of the figure, exploring the Shaman and Possession themes prevalent in Scholder’s works from the 1990’s. Another Possession, 1989, further explores these themes in a simultaneously intimidating and intimate way, with the figure’s gritted teeth and exposed spine grappling with the dark, textured bronze wings they bear.

Works from as early as 1962 including Divided Land, painted while Scholder was still a graduate student at the University of Arizona, show the influence of the Abstract Expressionist movement in his formative years and specifically West Coast painter Richard Diebenkorn. Later works such as Doll #4 and Kachina (Red Background), both from 2003, as well as Brave Indian, 1990, hark back to his earlier interest of Native American portraits by revisiting the subject matter that made him such a sought-after artist.
