LISBOA UNOFFICIAL TOURISM Lisboa, como todas as cidades, é narrada a partir de uma versão da História com cortes à medida dos discursos políticos e ideológicos acordados e em certas ocasiões tendenciosos. Mas para além destes lugares topicamente assimilados sobre os quais se foi construindo o marketing turístico convenientemente envolvido pelo manto acolhedor da cultura estabelecida, as múltiplas Lisboas que subjazem, acumulam-se, cruzam-se e confrontam-se numa metrópole contemporânea precisam de diversas formas de aproximação e diferentes visões. É necessário que, a partir da cidadania, sejam colocados em circulação outros relatos sobre a cidade baseados na sua utilização intensiva e desintoxicada de qualquer interesse de carácter institucional. A cidade é património de todos e, por isso, deve ser referida a partir de um leque amplo de perspetivas.

No Lisboa Unofficial Tourism* colaboram diversos agentes culturais vinculados com a capital portuguesa. Estes elaboraram uma série de itinerários que produzem diversas leituras sobre o património cultural lisboeta. Cada itinerário é, portanto, um comentário que oferece uma visão distinta das mencionadas no discurso oficial. Assim, Lisboa Unofficial Tourism vem demonstrar que a partir do próprio tecido social e cultural de uma cidade existe uma forma de fazer circular discursos alternativos sobre esta. *Iñaki Larrimbe participou com o Unofficial Tourism na edição de Madrid Aberto 2009-10 transformando uma caravana num posto de turismo ‘não oficial’, localizada nas ruas de Madrid com o objetivo de receber tanto consumidores culturais estrangeiros (turistas) como os cidadãos que transitavam pela zona. A estes visitantes foi-lhes oferecido plantas e guias que reuniam os itinerários madrilenos alternativos (luminosos de néon, Madrid de cinema, arte urbana, máquinas recreativas, tabernas centenárias, …) elaborados por diferentes agentes culturais. Em 2011 como continuação do projeto foi desenvolvido o Turismo raro na Galeria Off Limits com itinerários ampliados: Madrid dissecado, cinema fantástico, relógios de sol, solares, bowling, …, e em 2012 em Palma de Maiorca outro Unofficial Tourism (famosos, piscinas, edifícios ‘urvanos’, intervenções gráficas, gastronomia oculta, Palma la Nuit, …) no Museu Es Baluard no âmbito do projeto de AC/E 1812_2012. Um olhar contemporâneo.

Lisbon, as with all cities, has a narrative that comes from a version of History tailored to accorded, and sometimes biased, political and ideological speeches. However, beyond these topically assimilated places on which tourism marketing, conveniently wrapped by the warm mantle of the established culture, has been built, multiple underlying versions of Lisbon, which accumulate, cross and confront in a contemporary metropolis, need different approaches and very different perspectives. It is necessary that, from the citizenry, other versions of the city are put into circulation, based on their intensive use and free from any institutional interest. The city is everybody’s patrimony and, as such, it must be referenced from a wide range of perspectives.

Several cultural agents linked to the capital of Portugal collaborate with Lisboa Unofficial Tourism*. They have developed a series of itineraries that produce different readings on Lisbon cultural heritage. Each itinerary is, therefore, a comment that offers a different vision from the one of the official discourse. Thus, Lisboa Unofficial Tourism demonstrates that from the social and cultural fabric of a city, there is a way to circulate alternative discourses about it. *Iñaki Larrimbe participated in Unofficial Tourism in the edition Madrid Abierto 2009-10 transforming a caravan into an “unofficial’ tourism” office located on the streets of Madrid with the aim of serving both foreign cultural consumers (tourists) and citizens who were passing by the area. These visitors were provided with maps and guides with alternative itineraries in Madrid (neon signs, Madrid theatre, street art, amusement machines, centuries-old taverns...) produced by different cultural agents. As a continuation of the project, in 2011, Turismo Raro was developed in the Off Limits Gallery with extended itineraries: Stuffed Madrid, fantasy films, sundials, ancestral homes, bowling alleys..., and, in 2012, in Palma de Mallorca another Unofficial Tourism (Celebrities, swimming pools, ‘urban’ buildings, graphic interventions, hidden gastronomy, Palma la Nuit ...) at the Es Baluard Museum within the project AC/E 1812_2012. AUTO-LISBOA Por António Louro e Rui Luís O primeiro automóvel moderno foi apresentado em 1886, entre a sua invenção e a introdução em Portugal medeiam apenas dez anos. A propagação foi rápida e fez eclodir a urgência de novos programas. A arquitectura respondeu ao desafio com um novo léxico de estruturas – oficinas, estações de serviço, garagens, silos automóveis, stands, túneis e viadutos.

Estes novos espaços, que transferem o cerne da sua atenção do indivíduo para o automóvel, são o laboratório de uma serie de inovações construtivas que possibilitam a execução de espaços mais amplos e tecnicamente mais complexos. Em paralelo, surge também um novo universo gráfico e técnico associado ao automóvel - sinais, letreiros, ferramentas – que ao ocuparem estes novos lugares irão vincar ainda mais a sua identidade particular.

O itinerário Auto-Lisboa procura revelar algumas das mais carismáticas oficinas da cidade. Um percurso ecléctico onde se pode encontrar oficinas centenárias ornamentadas com vitrais, edificios-oficina com capacidade para dezenas de carros, garagens ao abandono ou pequenas oficinas de bairro em decadência acentuada. Uma panóplia de espaços que reflectem uma indústria encravada entre a nostalgia do carro mecânico e o admirável mundo novo do automóvel electrónico.

By António Louro and Rui Luís The first modern car was introduced in 1886; it was introduced in Portugal only ten years after its invention. It quickly spread and urgently required the creation of new programs. Architecture responded to the challenge with a new language of structures: workshops, gas stations, garages, parking lots, car dealerships, tunnels and viaducts.

These new spaces, which directed peoples’ attention towards cars, are the prelude to a series of constructive innovations that would later enable the development of larger and more complex spaces. At the same time, a car-related technical and graphic universe appears —signals, signs and tools that, by occupying these new places, would further strengthen this new car identity.

Auto-Lisboa Route seeks to discover some of the best-known city workshops. It is an eclectic path where you can find century-old workshops adorned with stained glass windows, workshop-buildings with capacity for dozens of cars, abandoned garages and small neighbourhood workshops, quite damaged over time. All of these sites reflect an industry stopped between the nostalgia for the traditional mechanical car and the new world of the electric car.

É mais antiga ‘garage’ de Portugal. Abriu portas em 1907 com capacidade para 200 veículos estando em actividade até hoje. Para além dos automóveis, reparavam-se carruagens, construíam-se carroçarias, vendiam-se peças, barcos a gasolina e hidroplanos. No seu interior havia ainda espaço para uma escola de “chaffeurs”. A abertura da Auto-Palace, com a sua ambiciosa arquitectura e grandiosa dimensão, foi um marco que marcou o ínicio da época dourada do automóvel em Lisboa.

It is the oldest «garage» in Portugal. It opened in 1907, offering a capacity for 200 vehicles; it is still operating.

In addition to cars, this garage also repaired carriages, built bodyworks, sold spare parts, petrol boats and hydrofoils. Inside, a «drivers» school was also in operation.

The Auto-Palace opening, with its ambitious architecture and large dimension, is a milestone that ushered in the golden age of the car in Lisbon.

Esta oficina, forrada a bonitos azulejos azuis, encontrase actualmente transformada em garagem e depósito de documentos da Procuradoria Geral da República. No piso térreo, os carros de alta cilindrada distribuiem-se pelo espaço decadente. Na piso -1, os processos de alguns dos casos mais emblemáticos da justiça portuguesa estão arrumados em armários-arquivo deslizantes.

This workshop, covered with beautiful blue tiles, is currently converted into a garage and document storage of the Office of the Attorney General. High-cylinder capacity cars are distributed on the ground floor. On the first floor, some of the most emblematic cases of the Portuguese justice processes are archived in sliding cupboard/file cabinets.

Rua Rodrigues Sampaio, 30 É um complexo que se divide por dois edificios e três pisos distintos. A oficina era originalmente especializada nos icónicos automóveis Mini da Austin Morris, daí o seu nome. Em 1974, na sequência da Revolução dos Cravos e de salários em atraso, a oficina passou a ser gerida directamente pelos seus 19 trabalhadores estando ainda 4 destes aos comandos da oficina até hoje. É digno de nota a garagem aberta que ocupa todo o primeiro piso.

Rua Rodrigues Sampaio, 30 It is a group of buildings divided into two buildings with three different floors. Originally, the workshop was specialized in the famous Mini Austin Morris cars, hence its name. In 1974, after the Carnation Revolution and some wage payment delays, the workshop began to be directly managed by its nineteen workers; four of them continue managing it. The open garage occupying the entire first floor is worth mentioning.

Situa-se num pequeno beco a 50 metros da Av. da Liberdade. É a típica oficina de bairro com a decadência do seu letreiro a deixar perceber que os tempos aureos já se esfumaram. No seu interior acumula-se um mundo de ferramentas, peças e automóveis em compartimentos que se sucedem. Tem como ex-libris uma estufa de pintura, equipamento raro em oficinas desta dimensão. É gerida desde 1982 pelo carismático José Graça, entre outras coisas antigo piloto de ralis.

Located at a small alley, fifty meters away from Av. da Liberdade, it is the typical decaying neighbourhood workshop, whose signboard shows that gold times have passed. Its interior has a world of tools, spare parts and cars in adjoining compartments. It has a paint booth, rare equipment in workshops of this size. Since 1982, it is managed by José Graça, famous, among other things, for his former career as a rally driver.

It is located in a two-story corner building. Built in the 1920s, this workshop occupies the land of Real Coliseu de Lisboa, historic theatre where the first cinema screening of Portugal took place. The car repair sector currently works on the ground floor, while the driving school cars, tuk-tuks used in tours and some employees’ cars from the nearby stores are received on the first floor.

É uma das maiores oficinas de Lisboa. Situada no primeiro piso de um edifício construído nos anos 40, organiza-se longitudinalmente como uma catedral dedicada à mecânica. Os carros estacionam nas suas boxes perpendiculares ao corredor central com cerca de 80 metros de comprimento enquanto são objecto de atenção do mecânico. No topo das boxes, generosas janelas permitem a entrada de luz natural em todo este espaço.

It is one of the largest workshops in Lisbon. Located on the first floor of a building built in the 1940s, it is lengthwise distributed as a cathedral devoted to the mechanics. Mechanics service the cars parked in their boxes, perpendicular to the eighty-meter long central hall.

Large windows located on top of the boxes allow flooding the inside with natural light.

Laurinda Santos é uma mulher num mundo de homens.

Herdou o negócio do pai. No pequeno escritório onde trabalha, a um canto da oficina, encontramos imagens da ponte de S. Francisco e de carros coloridos. Há poucos calendários com mulheres voluptuosas nesta garagem.

Gosta do tecto antigo em madeira mas tem dúvidas se o elevador hidráulico de automóveis está localizados no local correcto. Vai retirar os letreiros exteriores das marcas porque a Câmara está a cobrar muito dinheiro por eles.

Laurinda Santos is a woman in a man’s world. She inherited the business from his father. In the small office where she works, in a corner of the workshop, we find images of the Golden Gate Bridge and colourful cars.

In this garage, it is difficult to see the typical calendars with voluptuous women. She likes the old wooden ceiling, but wonders if the hydraulic car elevator is located in the right place. She considers removing the external brand signboards, since the Chamber is charging a lot of money for them.

Rua Actor Alves da Costa, 1A, Praça de Espanha Esta oficina está organizada em três pisos e ocupa dois edifícios construídos em 1949 que posteriormente foram unidos. No piso térreo está o stand de vendas e o sector de reparação automóvel dedicado à BMW. No piso 1 localiza-se a oficina Peugeot. Na cobertura encontra-se o armazenamento e lavagem de automóveis. Todo o edifício é o protótipo de oficina laboratório. Não há sujidade e os carros entram e saiem segundo um calendário rigoroso.

Localiza-se num edificio de gaveto com dois pisos. Construída nos anos 20, esta oficina ocupa o lote do Real Coliseu de Lisboa, sala de espectáculos onde teve lugar a primeira sessão de cinema em Portugal. Actualmente, no piso térreo funciona o sector de reparação automóvel e no primeiro piso a garagem que acolhe automóveis da escola de condução, os tuk-tuk de tours turisticos e alguns carros dos trabalhadores das lojas da redondeza.

The sales office and the BMW-dedicated car repair sector are located on the ground floor. The Peugeot workshop is located on the first floor. The roof of the building is intended for storage and car wash. The whole building is a workshop-laboratory prototype. Clean cars enter and exit according to a strict schedule.

Ocupa todo o piso térreo de um bonito edifício construído nos 40. As reparações são residuais no quotidiano desta oficina que ganhou fama como local de lavagem, trabalho executado sempre à mão de balde e esponja. No local existe uma máquina de lavagem automática parada há dez anos – não fica um serviço tão bom confidencia-nos o responsável da oficina. Cortinas laranjas dividem as diversas boxes de lavagem e sublinham a particularidade desta garagem.

It occupies the entire ground floor of a beautiful building built in the 1940s. Repairs are only a vestige in the everyday life of this workshop, which acquired fame as a manual car wash place, labour always being performed with buckets and sponges. On this site, there is an automatic washing machine stopped since ten years ago; the Head of the Workshop confesses, “it does not offer such a good service”. Orange curtains divide the various washing sections, underlining the peculiarity of this garage.

À semelhança do que aconteceu com várias oficinas localizadas no centro de Lisboa cuja inovação nos automóveis tornou obsoleta e a subida das rendas insustentável, a Auto Ritz fechou portas recentemente. Actualmente, espaço encontra-se totalmente vazio mas ao fundo a luz zenital ainda ilumina letreiros alusivos a lubrificantes sublinhando a nostalgia de um espaço outrora apinhado de automóveis.

Auto Ritz has recently closed its doors, as happened with several workshops located in the Centre of Lisbon that became obsolete before the innovations implemented in new cars and were unable to maintain their business due to the rising rent costs. Currently, the space is completely empty but, in the background, the natural light illuminates those signs related to lubricants, sublimating the nostalgia of a site once full of cars.

LISBOETAS ABANDONETAS Por Lisbon Sustainable Tourism Foi um amigo vindo de fora que me fez reparar em algo que, por ser tão comum, nunca tinha sido alvo da minha atenção.

Lisboetas abandonetas foi o nome em falso latim que usou para apelidar esta espécie vegetal, uma espécie local que cresce no topo dos telhados, que aparece entre as pedras da calçada e refloresta casas deixadas ao abandono. Aparecem como pequenos tufos verdejantes a fazerem padrão com os azulejos ou chegam mesmo a transformar-se em verdadeiros jardins verticais sobre cimento, todas elas, Lisboetas abandonetas, são a prova viva do ar húmido deste país à beira mar, da capacidade da natureza se sobrepor ao urbano e de uma cidade cheia de ruínas.

Este percurso pretende apenas identificar alguns bons exemplares desta “espécie” sugerindo locais onde talvez exista a hipótese de se descobrir ruas e recantos interessantes ou refletir sobre questões atuais.

By Lisbon Sustainable Tourism A friend who came from abroad made me realize something that, being obvious, had never caught my attention.

Lisboetas abandonetas was the name in false Latin used for this plant species, a local species that grows on the roofs, between the tiles of the sidewalk, reforesting the abandoned houses. They appear as small green tufts covering the tiles or even becoming into authentic vertical gardens on cement. All of them, the Lisboetas abandonetas, are proof of the air humidity in this sea country, of the nature’s capability for recovering from urbanization in a city of ruins.

This route aims to identify good examples of this “species”, suggesting places where there may be the opportunity to discover streets and interesting corners that allow you to reflect on current issues.

No nº185 desta rua surge um dos muitos prédios abandonados da zona. A rua do Benformoso entre talhos e mercearias halal, duas mesquitas não oficiais e restaurantes chineses conhecidos como “clandestinos”, é um bom exemplo tanto de deterioração como de diversidade.

Uma rua colorida e movimentada que liga o Martim Moniz ao novo Largo do Intendente.

Number 185 of this street is one of the many abandoned buildings in the area. Among shops and halalbutchers, two unofficial mosques and Chinese restaurants known as «illegal», Benformoso Street is a good example of both impairment and diversity. It is a colourful and hectic street connecting Martim Moniz with the new neighbourhood Largo do Intendente.

São cento e cinquenta e nove degraus que nos dão a oportunidade de experienciar a “cidade das 7 colinas”.

No primeiro lanço de escadas podemos observar pequenas plantas que irrompem do chão e nos acompanham na subida, que embora não seja tarefa fácil vale a pena pois esta escadaria vai dar a um dos miradouros mais deslumbrantes da cidade.

One hundred and fifty-nine steps give us the opportunity to experience the “City of Seven Hills”. In the first flight of stairs, we can see small plants that sprout from the ground and accompany us during the ascent. Although this task is not easy, it is worthy, because this ladder allows us to enjoy one of the most impressive city views.

Esta casa encontra-se numa travessa estreita que dá acesso ao miradouro de Nossa Sra. do Monte. De casa já não resta muito mas é agora um bonito jardim de Lisboetas abandonetas. A paisagem da periferia que se vê daqui, faz lembrar a quem passa que Lisboa não é só o centro turístico da Baixa nem a colina onde está o castelo.

This house is located in a narrow alley that leads to the Nossa Senhora do Monte viewpoint. There is not much remaining from the house, and now it is a beautiful Lisboetas abandonetas garden. The suburbs landscape that can be seen from here reminds the passers-by that Lisbon is not just a tourist centre or a hill with a castle.

Descendo a caminho da Mouraria por esta rua temos bastante a observar. Perto da entrada do novo jardim do Cerco da Graça há um prédio com um jardim vertical e com um património azulejar a precisar de restauro, por entre os azulejos há vários tipos de verde e de castanho.

Mais abaixo no nº13 há uma árvore que cresce no beiral do último andar.

Going down the Mouraria road we have may things to observe. Near the new Cerco da Graça garden entrance, there is a building with a vertical garden and a set of tiles that need restoration. Between tiles, there are several shades of green and brown. Downwards, at number 13, a tree grows in the eaves of the top floor.

Por onde o eléctrico leva os turistas em direção ao castelo e no qual já quase não há espaço para as senhoras de Alfama se sentarem, há um prédio com uma porta pintada de azul. Provavelmente serão poucos os que olham para esta porta e para as suas Lisboetas abandonetas mas como a Mouraria é a irmã feia de Alfama que ainda demora a pôr-se bonita, estas plantas continuarão a crescer até o investimento estrangeiro chegar.

On the way through which the tram carries tourists towards to the Castle, and on which there is almost no room for the Alfama Ladies to sit down, there is a building with a blue-painted door. People who stop to observe the door and its Lisboetas abandonetas is likely to be few but, since Mouraria neighbourhood is the ugly sister of Alfama neighbourhood, which still slowly embellishes itself, this plants continue growing, awaiting for the arrival of foreign investment.

É este edifício, um antigo palácio, que dá nome à rua. Foi construído no séc. XIII e reedificado no séc. XVIII após ter sido destruído pelo terramoto de 1755. Poderá a vir a ser um hotel ou não, entretanto, o jardim interior do palácio continua a crescer e tenta romper as paredes deste “monumento” que no seu todo é uma verdadeira Lisboeta abandoneta.

This building is a former palace, hence the name of the street. It was built in the thirteenth century and rebuilt in the eighteenth century, after being destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. It may become a hotel, meanwhile, the internal garden continues growing and trying to break the walls of this “monument” that, as a whole, is a unique and true Lisboeta abandoneta

Um pequeno largo, no meio da Mouraria é dos poucos sítios onde é quase difícil encontrar uma Lisboeta abandoneta, aqui temos um exemplo de espaço urbano bem tratado pela vizinhança e cuidado pelos moradores. No Beco das Farinhas encontra-se um tributo aos moradores do beco, um projeto fotográfico de Camilla Watson.

A small square in the centre of Mouraria neighbourhood is one of the few places where it is difficult to find a Lisboeta adandoneta; here is an example of an urban space being well preserved by neighbours. Talvez uma das Praças menos emblemáticas de Lisboa, rodeada de paragens de autocarro e táxis, aqui o trânsito não pára e quem passa também não. A praça é a demonstração de um centro urbano constituído por prédios votados ao abandono e à degradação, entre especulação imobiliária, burocracia, planos turísticos e outros, a praça vizinha - a de D.Pedro IV - tem 4 residentes, quantos será que tem esta?

Perhaps one of the lesser-known squares of Lisbon.

Surrounded by bus and taxi stops, here the traffic and passengers do not stop. The square is the demonstration of an urban centre formed by buildings doomed to abandonment and degradation, real estate speculation, bureaucracy, tourist plans, among others; the neighbouring square, D. Pedro IV, has four inhabitants. How many inhabitants are there in this one?

Ao lado da biblioteca de São Lázaro, a mais antiga de Lisboa, há um edifício prestes a colapsar, um chafariz oitocentista no Largo do Mastro e uma Lisboeta abandoneta com quase dois metros de altura no topo de um edifício que data de 1719. Tudo coisas que ninguém repara, foi o Sr. António, ex-historiador e jornalista que num intervalo do seu trabalho como arrumador de carros nos explicou tudo.

Next to São Lázaro library, the oldest one in Lisbon, there is a building to the point of collapse, an 18th-century fountain at Largo do Mastro and a two-meter high Lisboeta abandoneta on a building dating back to 1719.

Mr. Antonio, ex-historian and journalist, explained us all these things, which no one or very few realize, during a break from his job as a valet.

Em frente ao nº45 da rua Regueirão dos Anjos existe uma árvore que talvez não possa ser classificada como pertencente à espécie Lisboeta abandoneta, no entanto, surge sem explicação do meio da pedra da calçada. Frente al número 45 de la calle Regueirão dos Anjos hay un árbol que quizás no pueda ser clasificado como perteneciente a la especie Lisboeta abandoneta, sin embargo, surge sin explicación de entre medio de las baldosas de la acera. A su lado se halla un mural colorido que dice «Make love not war» [«Haz el amor, no la guerra»] y siguiendo por la calle, tanto el arte urbano como las Liboetas abandonetas están integrados en el paisaje.

Itinerário Gráfico Neodecadente Por MMMNNNRRRG Lisboa podia ter sido a Capital do Grafismo. Desculpa-se com a especulação imobiliária ou com a desmaterialização da cultura mas o problema principal é que esta cidade é uma Lolita que quer seduzir os turistas com espectáculos de rua para parecer que vive culturalmente. Galerias, museus, bibliotecas, livros, livrarias, discos, exposições, catálogos, arquivos, etc… deixaram de ser prioridade para quem manda. Este itinerário é uma homenagem aos monumentos da cultura do passado e aos novos anti-corpos do presente. É um percurso para quem gosta de desenho e matéria impressa, e no final do dia, de um “drink”…

By MMMNNNRRRG Lisbon could have been the capital of graphics. Beyond the real estate speculation or the de-materialisation of culture, the main problem is that this city is a Lolita who wants to seduce tourists with street performances to seem culturally active. Galleries, museums, libraries, books, bookstores, discs, exhibitions, catalogues, files, etc., are no longer a priority for those who govern. This route is a tribute to those monuments of the past culture and the new present antibodies.

It is a route for those who like design and printed materials and for those who, at the end of the day, want to «drink».

E tem uma esplanada magnífica!

With 1 meter long and 3.80 square meters of total space, only two not-too-robust people can be inside. Tour guides say that it is the smallest library in the world and that, although it is not certain that it appears in the Guinness Record, it is very small. More courage is needed to go to the library, whose roof is about to collapse; the site blackness reminds Andrea Bruno’s drawings! Besides helmet, you should also wear gloves if you are allergic to dust. To enter the site, you must be a David Lynch fan and overcome the horrific graffiti placed at the entrance with the sponsorship of Câmara de Lisboa; this is the city’s favourite technique to disguise the abandoned property.

When this facility did not have a name, it was known because of its owner who slapped customers. Now the friendliest bookseller around the world serves it. The “mini-monopolist” Ler Devager acquired it, and rumours say that, in the future, it will work as BD and illustrations library. If that is true, it will be extraordinary for this city. Cross fingers!

Centros nas margens Por Tiago Mota Saraiva Na década de 50, Marvila estava nas margens de Lisboa. Havia deixado de ser área de quintas e palacetes para ser uma zona de intensa actividade industrial e distribuição. Nos seus baldios densificavam-se bairros de barracas habitados por operários migrantes provenientes do interior do país. Ao longo dos anos, em várias fases, o realojamento dos moradores foi sendo realizado até ao fim do séc. XX. Já neste século, no Plano Director Municipal de Lisboa previa-se que a freguesia viesse a sofrer uma revolução urbana.

Desde o novo Hospital Central de Lisboa, pensado para ser o maior e mais importante hospital do país, o ponto de partida da terceira ponte sobre o Tejo e a transformação de várias áreas agrícolas em urbanizáveis.

Entretanto, nem hospital, nem ponte, nem construção nova.

O território que outrora se previa “desenvolver” ficou expectante. Em processo de desurbanização. Muitos dos grandes investidores que se movimentaram comprando os melhores lotes para urbanização a partir do conhecimento prévio do novo retalho de cidade foram falindo e dando lugar aos fundos que compram lixo por poucos euros.

Iremos visitar, a pé, aquilo que ainda existe e que faz parte da estrutura e rede de identidades de Marvila.

Centres in the outskirts

By Tiago Mota Saraiva In the 1950s, Marvila was in the outskirts of Lisbon. It no longer was the area of farms and mansions, but an area of intense industrial activity and distribution. Its wastelands were populated and neighbourhoods of tents inhabited by immigrant workers from the countryside were growing. Over the years, in various stages, and until the end of the twentieth century, residents were relocated.

In this century, the general plan of the City of Lisbon expected that Freguesia was threatened by the urban revolution.

From the creation of the new Central Hospital of Lisbon, intended to be the largest and most important hospital in the country, to the point of departure of the third bridge over the Tagus River and the transformation of several agricultural areas into urban areas.

However, there was no hospital, bridge, or new construction.

The territory, in which “development” was once expected, was still waiting, in de-urbanization process. Many big investors reacted and purchased the best parcels to urbanize them following the idea of this new city, but the failure resulted in funds buying junk for a few euros.

First phase of a self-built neighbourhood, built before April 25 that resettled eighty-eight families coming from the old <82> Chinatown /82. For more than forty years, this neighbourhood has been struggling for the legalization of housing, resulting in the granting of the housing authorization for the first twenty-four houses in last July.

Segunda fase do realojamento do Bairro do Chinês na zona do Vale Fundão. Construído num ano – 1973 - e ao fim de semana, por muitas das famílias que ainda hoje o habitam, a segunda fase de construção do bairro da Prodac realojou 458 famílias e tem uma história de luta semelhante à da zona Norte. Ainda nenhum dos edifícios se encontra legalizado, decorrendo neste momento os respectivos processos de licenciamento.

Second Chinatown resettlement phase in Vale Fundão area. Built in 1973 for many of the families who still live there. The second phase of Prodac neighbourhood resettled 458 families and has a similar struggle history as the northern zone. Yet none of the buildings has been legalized, and now the respective licensing processes are conducted.

A partir de um processo deliberativo entre várias assembleias, sempre participadas por mais de 200 moradores, a população decidiu que este equipamento e respectivos acessos era a primeira prioridade das intervenções a realizar no espaço público do bairro. Este anfiteatro foi construido entre os meses de Junho e Julho 2015, por um grupo de moradores que se inscreveu na bolsa de trabalhadores locais.

From a deliberative process between various assemblies, always with a participation of more than two hundred citizens, the people decided that this facility and access was the main priority of the interventions to be carried out in the public space of the neighbourhood. A group of residents who enrolled in the local career placement centre for unemployed workers and pensioners built this amphitheatre between June and July 2015.

A vista do lugar, volta guiada a uma turista Chinesa Por Pedro Campos Costa

Hoje o turismo é concebido e entendido como produto cultural em clara oposição à produção industrial. As maravilhas naturais, o património urbano, as cidades com as suas catedrais, palácios e museus, os parques, as cerimónias são o produto turístico transformado em cenário e experiência. Ao contrário da produção industrial que se baseia na transformação da natureza, o turismo como indústria cultural vive de uma fruição estética, de um comtemplar em vez de explorar[1]. O produto turístico é o próprio território.

Este guia explora a possibilidade de uma nova narrativa no tecido urbano, com um itinerário onde os pontos notáveis, são os miradouros – ir ver a vista, como pretexto da volta à cidade. Uma narrativa onde o tempo, a experiência e as vistas surgem como um novo Cícerone da vista do lugar.

[1] O turismo não explora directamente os recursos naturais, mas indirectamente. Através do consumo. No entanto as transformações urbanas podem ser muito grandes promovidas pela indústria turística.

Site seeing, Guide tour to a Chinese Tourist

Nowadays, tourism is considered and understood as a cultural product in the clear opposition to industrial production.

The natural wonders, urban heritage, the cities with its cathedrals, palaces and museums, parks, cemeteries are touristic products transform in the scenography of experience. On the contrary to the industrial production, based on the transformation of nature, tourism as a cultural industry builds on aesthetic amusement, on contemplation instead of exploration[1]. The territory itself is a touristic product.

This guide explores possibilities of new narrative for an urban fabric, with itinerary, where the highlighted points are belvederes – going to see the view as the pretext for coming back to town. It is the narrative where time, experience and views emerge as a new Cicerone for sightseeing.

[1] The tourism does not directly explore natural resources. It does it indirectly through consumption. However urban transformation caused by touristic industry can be large.
