Wilshire Temple tops the 2014 Preservation Awards

Wilshire Boulevard Temple has a legendary past steeped in early L.A. and Hollywood film history.

It will be honored for its dazzling past and recent renovation poising it for a vibrant future with the President’s Award at the Los Angeles Conservancy 2014 Preservation Awards luncheon.

The 33rd annual event will take place on Thurs., July 31 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, 506 S. Grand Ave. “Rabbi to the Stars” Edgar Magnin led an effort to purchase property at Wilshire and Hobart boulevards in 1921, in what was then an upper-class suburban area.

Built for $1.4 million by A.M. Adelman, S. Tilden Norton and David C. Allison, the sanctuary resembles a movie theatre with a domed auditorium, spacious lobby and grand entrance.

Warner Bros. studio head Jack Warner commissioned murals telling of Jewish history. Dedicated in 1929, the Reform congregation temple’s interior also includes black marble columns, gold alter fixtures and mosaics.

Other features include a Romanesque portal, rose window and Byzantine dome rising 140 feet above street level.

The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

The renovated building was rededicated in 2013.

The religious congregation made “a monumental commitment to reviving its highly significant home, painstakingly restoring historic features while poising the building for generations of future use as the centerpiece of a vibrant campus serving the congregants and the surrounding community,” according to a Conservancy release.

Looking back 80 years on an evolving city landmark If Fred Beck and Roger Dahlhjelm could see their “idea” today, they would marvel at how the Farmers Market has evolved in the 80 years since they first began their enterprise.

The duo convinced property owner Earl Gilmore to convert his lot at Third & Fairfax where farmers parked their trucks into a village square where stalls could be built to sell their produce.

Within weeks after the stalls were constructed, 30 more vendors wanted to sign up.

Beck described it as a “permanent food fair.”

A new section of the market was built on the east side of Fairfax Ave., bringing even more customers to one of the city’s most popular tourist spots.

The market grew from the original crude stalls to a 15acre one-stop shopping center with more than 100 businesses.

Here are some alternatives to using gas-powered blowers Science quiz: which emits more hydrocarbons into the atmosphere? A half-hour of yard work with a two-stroke leaf blower or driving a Ford F-150 truck from Texas to Alaska? If you thought this a trick question, you’re right, because it’s the blower.

The constant whir of gardeners’ gas blowers can be heard on almost any street, any time, any day. On a windless day, the smell of exhaust hovers longer than the noise.

Gas leaf blowers create pollution, which is why more and more gardeners have taken to wearing masks. Your impulse to close doors and windows on mow and blow day is a good one because the dust and emissions are noxious.

South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) estimates that in one year the average blower emits as much pollution as 80 new cars, each driven 12,500 miles. While the

hybrid in your driveway is lowering your carbon footprint, that weekly blower is vrooming it up.

Blowers are bad for human health, bad for the environment and create noise pollution. So what can you do to

help clean up your yard, your lungs and your air?

Rake and broom. Those long-handled gardening tools of days gone by are cheap, effective and eco-friendly. They won’t leave behind that fine layer of grit on outdoor furniture, fabrics and tables that comes with a blower.

Gardeners might have to spend more time by using hand-powered equipment. Ask your gardener to use a rake without offering a raise and they might tell you to blow it yourself.

The Natural History Museum at 900 Exposition Blvd. is bringing summer fun outdoors on Friday evenings for Summer Nights in the Garden. Guided tours through the botanical gardens will be offered at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. on July 11 and 25 and Aug. 1, 15 and 29. Themed drinks and food truck fare will be available for purchase throughout the evening; KCRW DJ Anthony Valdez will provide soft mood music.

‘Marilyn’ on exhibit at Hollywood Museum “Marilyn: The Exhibit” returns to the Hollywood Museum, 1660 N. Highland Ave., to salute the fabled actress, who died 52 years ago this August.

The Hollywood Museum is located in the Max Factor Building. “It was here that Max Factor originally designed Marilyn’s on-screen hair and coloring, transforming her into the sexy blonde,” says museum president Donelle Dadigan.

The exhibit houses the dress worn by Marilyn on her honeymoon with baseball legend, Joe DiMaggio, made famous when she went on a USO tour to entertain troops in Korea.

Coffee may soon be on the menu at the historic Gilmore Gasoline Filling Station at 859 N. Highland Ave. Starbucks has filed for a conditional use permit to build a drive-through at the station built in 1935. The Seattle company also seeks extended hours from 5 a.m. to midnight.

A dilapidated version remains of the Art Deco, doublecanopied structure built by the Gilmore family, owners of the Famers Market.

Layout of the historic property will remain mostly unchanged from its original auto-friendly configuration, according to city documents.

The applicant is working with the city Office of Historic Resources to assure the development is historically compatible, according to the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Committee.

Signage completes Boulevard Heights quest for historic status A two-block stretch on Bronson Ave.—the Boulevard Heights Historic District— was honored with its very own sign. Four signs to be exact.

The recent unveiling completes the neighborhood’s journey for historic status. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

“It is a great honor. Our own Robby O’Donnell worked for several years to bring this to fruition,” said Lorna Hennington, president of the Wilshire Park Association.

She initiated the application process while the Architectural Resources Group provided the research. Residents funded the vetting process and the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council provided matching funds.

The milestone for the 81home area—from 658 to 899 S. Bronson—was celebrated with a breakfast reception at the home of O’Donnell and Guy Shaw.

Homes started at $3,000 The area is noted for representing the middle class in the early 20th century. Doctors, lawyers, realtors and auto salesmen with large, extended families moved into the newly

built Craftsman, Mediterranean, Colonial and Tudor Revival styles homes. They had to be two stories and cost at least $3,000 to keep the area upscale.

The homes boast front porches and long driveways that lead to garages in the backyard where there was once room for a barn.

Site of early L.A. politics In fact, it wasn’t the architecture that piqued historians’ interest and placed this twoblock area on the map.

“It has more to do with development throughout Los Angeles and the politics,” said O’Donnell.

The street was named for Marcus Alonzo Bronson, who with Robert McGarvin developed the area which was annexed by the city in 1908.

It was like many tracts laid out by city insiders in light of the Mulholland Dam and the city municipal water services which would allow expansion in the arid landscape.

“That’s what makes it interesting, and more significant than any architecture,” said O’Donnell. Some homes will also have bronze plaques announcing the historic status.

An array of California native plants, plus advice from horticulturist and native plant expert Lili Singer, can be found at Payne Foundation’s booth at the Hollywood Farmers Market at Ivar and Selma on Sun., July 6 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The first of a three-part course on native garden design, which meets on Sat., July 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Tuxford St., offers a foundation in design styles and process.

Landscape architects Anna Armstrong and Richard Walker will lead the course that explains the definition of “native plant,” why natives are valuable, about plant communities, plus planting techniques, establishment, irrigation, pruning and maintenance.

Spend the first Saturday of every month sprucing up the gardens. Volunteers should bring hats, gloves and kneepads.

Tools and refreshments will be provided on Sat., Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon.

This one almost got me... almost. During the reign of England’s Charles II, the quintessential playboy king, the numerous royal playmates apparently all had one or two things in common—their buxomness.

Now for the tricky part. At this time, by happy coincidence, milk started being delivered door to door in London.

The populace thereby took the term “Charley” one step further. It soon became the slang word for milk, and the broken-down nag which pulled the milk wagon was naturally a “Charley horse.” Due to the condition of the horses, the slippery and uneven cobblestone streets, and the usual

inhumane characters of the average milk-wagon driver, the horses were more often than not lame and limping.

Ampersand is a corruption of “and per se.” The symbol is an adaptation of the Latin et (and). If we look closely at &, the “e” and the cross of the “t” are clearly visible.
