If you’ve heard about the restoration of the Wilshire Boulevard Temple, here’s your chance to see it firsthand.

The L.A. Conservancy will host a tour of the Temple’s Erika J. Glazer Family Campus ond Sun., April 27 from l 1 toso5 p.m. at 3663 Wilshire Blvd. The event will include docent tours of the sanctuary and campus, speakers discussing the history, restoration and future of the Temple, a musical presentation in the main sanctuary and a closing reception.

The tour of the L.A. landmark will tell the story of the temple, focusing on the twoyear, $47.5 million renovation and restoration of the main sanctuary, completed last fall under the guidance of preservation architect Brenda Levin.

First phase of project During the tour, Temple leaders will share their vision of the campus as a resource for not only congregants but for the surrounding multiethnic, non-Jewish community.

The interior features black marble, gold inlay, mosaics, rare woods, murals by artist Hugo Ballin depicting 3,000 years of Jewish history that were commissioned by the Warner brothers as a gift to the synagogue.

The restoration project is only part of a comprehensive plan for the property. Built in 1929 with funds from the Warner brothers, founders of the Hollywood studio, and film producer Irving Thalberg, the Wilshire Boulevard Temple’s refurbished 1,658-seat sanctuary and outdoor space restoration is the first phase of a 10-year project.

The massive project exemplifies how restoring one historic building can help revitalize an entire neighborhood— illustrating the larger impact of historic preservation on the well-being of communities, writes Sarah Weber in Los Angeles Conservancy News.

Historic Cultural Monument Despite the building’s designation as a L.A HistoricCultural Monument in 1973 and listing in the Register of Historic Places in 1981, many congregants had moved to other parts of the city by the early 1990s, and the structure suffered from lack of maintenance. Murals were cracked, plaster from the dome had fallen due to water damage, and the windows were bowed.

A decision was made by Temple leaders to find the money to invest in its future rather than selling the building, and the board made restoration a priority. The Jewish community responded and raised $121 million to date to fund the restoration, and continues to raise money to expand the entire campus.

In July, the next phase of construction begins. It includes the renovation of two school buildings, a new structure that will provide social services, athletic facilities and parking. Visit laconservancy. org/Wilshire-temple.

Heritage Day includes tours of five museums

Groups participating in L.A. Heritage Day on Sun., April 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. represent historic and geographically focused organizations from across Southern California.

The event takes place inside the historic Pico House (adjacent to Olvera Street and across the street from Union Station). Tours of Olvera Street, Avila Adobe, Museum of Social Justice, Sepulveda House Museum, the Chinese American Museum, and Plaza Firehouse Museum will be available, as well as the América Tropical Interpretive Center. Sponsored by the L.A. Heritage Alliance, the event has children’s activities, giveaways, and other activities.

Vintage vehicles, lectures, music and tour at Concours Vintage and classic cars manufactured prior to 1975, as well as an array of motorcycles will adorn the motor court at Greystone Mansion when the Concours d’Elegance returns to the landmark estate on Sun., May 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The all-day event also features live music, gourmet food and beverages, vendors, lectures and fashion shows. In addition, visitors can tour the historic Greystone Mansion, which has served as the backdrop for many motion picture and television productions.

Intimate look into small interiors in Woods’ new book Hancock Park-based author Douglas Woods has recently published his fourth book, “Dreaming Small: Intimate Interiors.”

The 228-page hardback features 200 color photos by Melba Levick of homes mostly under 2,000 square feet.

In an era of downsizing, the 22 Southern California homes largely built in the early 20th century show how artful living can be accomplished in any size.

Arts and Crafts bungalows and Spanish style haciendas are among these jewel-box homes. Also featured are midcentury modern and Frenchinspired townhomes.

Many are by legendary architects including Irving Gill, Richard Neutra and Paul R. Williams.

Citrus House They include the Citrus House in Hancock Park, 1925.

The California Bungalow was in disrepair when fashion designer and interior decorator Johnson Hartig found it.

He raised the ceilings, redid the floors, painted the walls white and decorated with a mix of colorful art and old world antiques. A garden oasis beckons with a pool and driftwood sculptures created by Hartig.

Windsor Village In Windsor Village, a French Normandy townhouse has changed little since the 1930s when The Rosenkranz Apartments were built. A courtyard welcomes residents on the outside, and Avedon portraits and a thrift shop artwork above the fireplace are on display in the featured home.

Another apartment in Windsor Village built in 1936 shows high ceilings and a generous floor plan.

The Beckman Residence is a “standout” in Hancock Park— an International Style nestled among early 20th-century European revival houses. Designed by architect Gregory Ain, the 1938 home was restored and updated by owner

Morgan House The Morgan House in Hancock Park, 1917, is a study in architect Irving Gill’s homage to concrete as a modern material. Restorations add clerestory windows and skylights. The living room boasts a Batchelder-tile fireplace.

Homes in Ojai, Santa Monica, La Jolla and other locales are also featured.

Woods’ previous books also feature area homes. Among them is “Classic Homes of Los Angeles.”

Conservancy’s Open Days tours private gardens Tour a dozen private gardens in Pasadena, San Marino and Beverly Hills through The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program on Sundays,

Diamond Foam and Fabric remains iconic on La Brea

By Sondi Toll Sepenuk Jason Asch never planned a career in the textile industry. He was all set to go to law school when a summer job at Diamond Foam and Fabric came calling.

Since the 1950s, two brothers and a sister had owned the family business, then called Diamond Foam. The 1920s building that housed their La Brea Ave. foam store originally served as a De Soto car dealership, designed by architect Julia Morgan.

Having no one to take over the family business when they retired, they approached Asch.

Being a local, who once lived in Fremont Place, he decided to make a go of it and bought the store at 611 S. La Brea in 1981. He noticed that Diamond’s customers would purchase their fabrics around the city and then bring the fabric to Diamond Foam for the foam. Asch decided that the logical thing to do would be to add fabrics to their stock and sell everything directly from the store –– one stop shopping.

Asch also observed that the local fabric stores were selling silks and woolen prints, so he decided to focus on woven fab-

rics.

He estimates that he has more than 5,000 rolls of fabric in stock, and if you don’t see it on the floor, just ask. He’ll have it somewhere.

“I buy fabrics the way other people collect stamps and I love every single roll individually,” he proclaims. “My friends tease me because they say I could be shown a porno movie and the only thing I’d notice would be the sofa fabric. And it’s true. Fabrics really are a passion above and beyond being my livelihood.”

It’s that obsessive passion for each individual fabric that keeps clients coming back year after year.

“I believe the reason the store is so successful and why my customers keep coming back is because we listen to people. We listen really hard.

We understand our clients’ needs and treasure their feedback.”

When the recession hit in 2007, owning a high-end textile store became a bit precarious, but Asch dug in, knowing that he didn’t want to go the mass production route.

buying junk.”

Asch firmly believes in only buying high-quality textiles that come from producers who treat their workers well. “The question I ask myself,” says Asch, “is ‘did the person making this get maternity leave?’”

Much of the fabric that Asch sells is American made. He realizes that his customer’s sensibilities are in tune to socially responsible issues, and he wants to mirror that with his own company. His employees get full benefits, and many of them have worked with him for 20 years. One employee, Earl Johnson, has been with

the company for 45 years.

As more retail spaces have opened on La Brea, Asch knows that his business must also reflect the street’s changes. He plans to introduce Italian bedding, fine towels and possibly high-end lighting fixtures. Staying true to form, though, he only plans to use high quality, small producers for those items as well.

“I want our store to be a destination place,” says Asch, “and for people to know that we are a store that cares.”

Number seven has been in groupings through the years Why is the number seven so often called a “lucky” number? wonders Julie Staunton.

This mystic or sacred number is composed of four and three, which for reasons lost to antiquity have always been accounted as lucky. Among the Babylonians, Egyptians and other ancient peoples there were seven sacred planets; and the Hebrew verb to swear (as in an oath) means literally “to come under the influence of seven things.”

There are seven days in creation, seven days in a week, seven virtues, seven divisions of the Lord’s Prayer, seven ages in the life of man, and the seventh son of the seventh son was always held notable.

Throughout history, this number has adorned more groupings than any other: The Seven Against Thebes, The Seven Liberal Arts, The Seven Deadly Sins, The Seven Seas, The Seven Senses, The Seven Sisters, The Seven Sorrows, The Seven Stars, The Seven Wonders of the World, The Seven Hills of Rome, Seventh Heaven, The Seven Year’s War, Seven-Day Adventists, and of course, my favorite ensemble western, The Magnificent Seven, to name only a few. *** When someone is taken somewhere against their will, it’s called “kidnapping” regardless of the victim’s age.
