Online campaign to aid in operation of Angels Flight The nonprofit Angels Flight Railway Foundation, the seventh private operator of the railway, has launched a campaign to raise funds online, according to foundation chair Adele Yellin of Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles.

The campaign was promoted at the recent showing of the 1951 film noir movie, “M,” at the Million Dollar Theater. The screening included remarks from mystery writer Michael Connelly, who took time off from the final days of filming the second season of his TV show, “Bosch,” to pro-

mote Angels Flight.

Funds for the railway are urgently needed, Yellin says, for ongoing expenses while government officials ponder the private railway’s future.

Angels Flight has been idle for two years since a federal regulator forced state regulators to delay reopening.

The foundation is composed of philanthropic business leaders who are stewards of the town’s 114-year-old funicular railway on Bunker Hill.

Paul Williams sculpture unveiled at Plaza

A bronze bas-relief figure of architect Paul R. Williams was unveiled last month at the South Central Los Angeles Regional Center Legacy Plaza at 2500 S. Western Ave. The 9-foot by 7-foot sculpture was lowered by crane onto the Paul R. Williams Memorial Plaza at the 1949 Golden State Mutual Insurance Company, designed by Williams, and new corporate offices of SCLARC, which provides a host of services to those with developmental disabilities.

West Adams-based artistsculptor Georgia Hanna Toliver created the sculpture of the 20th century African American architect, the first licensed African American architect west of the Mississippi River.

The piece is flanked by large stainless steel panels which tell of Williams’ history.

“Williams was an artist.

His architecture was multidimensional and so was his life,” Toliver said. “And since this sculpture would be in the heart of the West Adams historic district, what better way to tell his story than through his own artistic contribution.”

‘It felt like Mayberry’ at Longwood's progressive dinner party

By Nanci Leonard Myth: In L.A., no one knows their neighbors because people are constantly moving in and out.

Fact: The 18 houses that comprise the 900 block of South Longwood Avenue (Brookside) just celebrated their 37th Annual Progressive Dinner Block Party.

For the first 20 years, the

potluck block party was held in the magnificent theater in Bill and Irene Larsen’s backyard. (The family has owned the home for 73 years.) However, the neighbors decided that they would like to visit each other’s homes so a progressive dinner was planned.

Once again, as she has done for many years, Sherry Bonanno (the block captain who has

lived with her husband Tom on Longwood for 20 years) planned this year’s progressive dinner Nov. 8.

A variety of appetizers was served at Sandy and Bill Boeck’s house; they’ve resided there for 42 years. Then the neighbors walked down the block to Reatha and Owen Smith’s house for main courses; they’ve resided on Long-

After four months of planning, the party started with a DJ, taco cart, bouncy house, face painter, balloon artist, a wine and garden labyrinth and a pie-baking contest.

The 39th annual block party was held on the 300 block of S. Lucerne Blvd. in October with some 120 neighbors and friends for some good old fashioned neighborly fun. Live music was provided by a dynamic band and delicious Persian food of chicken and luleh kebob, grilled tomatoes and rice was served. Cupcakes from Hansens and yummy Choctal ice cream were a huge hit.

Petersen Museum provided a 1934 LaSalle Series 350 Convertible Coupe for all to enjoy. Some neighbors played ping pong while others got very serious competing in an egg toss. Psychic Melinda Hess provided insightful readings while others had their faces painted and their funny bones tickled by Silly Amy the clown. All in all, it was a beautiful day in the neighborhood and we're very proud of our rich tradition.

Legends prevail on last days of Pontius Pilate Whatever happened to Pontius Pilate, the man who “washed his hands” and condemned Jesus Christ to death? wonders Peter Fagerholm.

There is no factual information, only traditions and legends. One story claims Pilate and his wife became penitent and died in the faith. Another tale has it that Pilate’s later life was so full of misfortune that he committed suicide in Rome. His body was thrown

into the Tiber, but evil spirits so disturbed the water that it was taken out and removed to France’s Rhône River.
