The Boulevard Heights Historic District was approved by the State Historical Resources Commission, and went up on

the National Register of Historic Places website in October.

“We’re starting to work on getting signs so people know we actually made it,” said area resident Robby O’Donnell.

The two-block, 81-home area—from 658 to 899 S. Bronson Ave.—joins more than 80,000 sites on the National Register.

Built in the early 20th-century—between Ninth St. and Wilshire Blvd.—the District’s homes feature Craftsman, Mediterranean, Colonial and Tudor Revival styles.

Wilshire Park HPOZ Much of the work garnering the nomination was in place from when residents had collected archival photographs, researched architects and styles and raised funds to hire a vetting firm to obtain the Wilshire Park Historic Preservation Overlay Zone in 2007.

As a national cultural resource worthy of preservation, the placement provides a degree of protection from adverse effects resulting from federally funded or licensed projects. Registration also encourages incentives for preservation of historic properties, including special building codes to facilitate the restoration of historic structures and tax advantages.

There are no restrictions placed upon a private property owner with regard to normal use, maintenance, or sale of a property listed in the National Register.

However, a project that may cause substantial adverse changes in the significance of a registered property may require compliance with local ordinances or the California Environment Quality Act.

By Laura Eversz Using more than 200 vintage images, authors Cynthia Exum and Maty Guiza-Leimert weave the tale of the area’s humble beginnings in the late 1920s to its rise in the 1940s in the book “Leimert Park.”

According to Walter III’s wife, author Guiza-Leimert, Walter Sr. pioneered development of many prestigious communities in L.A. Paving the Way The book’s first chapter shows the underdeveloped land; chapter two tells of Leimert’s purchase. In “Paving the Way,” photographs feature the faces of the builders, architects and contractors, while chapter four illustrates a community unfolding with transportation, recreation, churches and schools.

Learning to draw using silverpoint technique, art activities for kids and Chinese music in the garden are available to patrons this month at The Huntington, 1151 Oxford Road in San Marino.

Pre-schoolers can take an “artventure” with Laura Moede on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Children explore galleries in search of colors, shapes and other art forms and apply them to their own art activities.

Native and container gardens, getting rid of lawn focus at Theodore Payne

Winter cactus show, holiday cooking class at Arboretum

Three-part native garden design classes, container gardens and getting rid of your lawn are the focus at the Theodore Payne Foundation at 10459 Tuxford St., Sun Valley.

Kids ages 7 to 11 can create their own one-of-a-kind accordion books using colorful papers and inks on Sat., Nov. 3 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The class will cover book-making techniques for folding pages, covering bookboards and decorating them using stamped patterns and collages.

Native garden design There will be two sets of three-part gardening classes that focus on plants native to Southern California at Payne this month. The first class, with Andreas Hessing, will run Saturdays, Nov. 3 and 10, and Dec. 8. By Laura Eversz Looking for a crowd-pleaser for Thanksgiving? Try roasting fall veggies. They can be made ahead, look beautiful on the buffet, and taste delicious.

Roasted vegetables with balsamic lemon vinaigrette 12 baby beets, peeled 3 med. yams, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces 3 lbs. acorn squash, unpeeled, quartered lengthwise, seeded, cut crosswise into 1/2-inchthick slices 1 1/2 lbs. brussels sprouts, halved lengthwise 2 tsps. chopped fresh rosemary or 1 tsp. dried 5 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 whole garlic head, top 1/2 inch trimmed 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tsp. grated lemon peel Preheat oven to 450°F. Cook beets in medium pot of boil-

‘Pontiff’ defended Rome; steel yarn hard to control

The L.A. Museum of the Holocaust will host its annual dinner on Sun., Nov. 4 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, 9500 Wilshire Blvd.
