By Laura Eversz Meredith Scott Lynn remembers the exact “aha” moment that inspired her to create Write Brain Books—illustrated, textless books with lines on the pages that are ready for writers to fill in.

“I grabbed a book to read to my niece, Lila,” said the vivacious redhead, who has a long career as an actor and currently stars on daytime soap “Days of Our Lives.” “There was an opening sentence on the first page, nothing but simplistic illustrations on the next nine, and a closing sentence on the last page.

“In order to entertain both of us, I quickly shifted into storytelling mode, creating an elaborate and compelling story inspired by the images on

the nine text-less pages,” she recalled with a laugh.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The name Write Brain Books comes from the theory of left-brain or right-brain dominance, with each side controlling different types of thinking, said Lynn.

“I find it frightening how our kids are being raised. They are growing up in a highly technological society and at a time when our educational system values standardized testing above most things, and the arts are no longer part of public schools.”

Write Brain’s wordless books provide youngsters an opportunity to express themselves using their own words.

“They are allowed to be messy, to be expressive, to find their voices and share their ideas with others,” said Lynn. “And, creative writing activates a child’s right brain.”

The books also foster the art of writing by hand, which is quickly vanishing, she adds.

“I really believe that the books connect children to their inner voices, and encourage more reflection and less distraction.” And, she says, they provide a muchneeded balance to “techtivities,” which, according to many studies, are overwhelming children’s brains.

The books—30 in total, with 10 more coming—are wonderfully illustrated by emerging artists, many from San Francisco’s Academy of Art University. Each book includes the illustrator’s photo and bio, so until the child authors the book, the illustrator is the star,” said Lynn.

When complete, the author’s photo will go right next to the illustrator’s, making them co-creators of an actual book that can then be ordered as a professionally printed hard cover or soft cover copy.

“It’s not about flipping off digital technology,” Lynn tells me in her delightfully

“Everyone has stories to tell,” adds Lynn. “In creating Write Brain Books, I want to offer children of all ages, and the adults who love them, an inspirational tool for creative expression that can be shelved or shared.”

Studying for the SAT exam and its partner-in-crime, the P (preliminary) SAT, can seem nearly impossible at times when added to an alreadyheavy workload.

Originally known at the Scholastic Aptitude Test, it is now known only by the initials SAT. The understood correlation is simple: a higher score results in more consideration

Nix your kids’ homesickness the first few weeks.

Especially if you have little ones, the first few weeks can be tough being away from home for the long school day. Pack little love notes or a family photo into their lunchbox or folder.

Plan your menus and school lunches in advance. When you wait until the last minute, meals tend to be fast and not so healthy. Get your kids involved in the menu planning.

Ask them what they’d like in their lunches and have them help with some of the lunchbox prep before bedtime.

Stock up on staples for your pantry and freezer so you are prepared.

“Penny was my favorite teacher,” said Gonzalez, whose oldest boy, now in kindergarten, graduated from Plymouth last spring; her younger son is in his final year. “I had such a wonderful time there that there was never a doubt as to where I would send my boys.

Penny has a certain magic about her that little kids pick up on. She really is special.”

Margaret Jacquemin, whose children also attend Plymouth, agrees. “Penny is the quintes-

sential matriarch of the Plymouth School. Anyone who meets her instantly recognizes that this woman embraced her calling. She radiates as much youthfulness as her students, which is only matched by the experience of life that exudes from her warm eyes, her genuine words and her reassuring touch. Penny is as true as they come.”

“I’m so lucky,” said Cox. “I did something I really loved.

It was the joy of my life to be there for 42 years.”

Now settling into retirement, Cox said her plans include “a lot of sitting and reading”—something she hasn’t

had much time for in the past.

Leave it to a former student to put the idea of retirement into perspective for her. “This little boy about 10 years old came by to say goodbye, and he said, ‘so what are you going to do now, Penny?’ ‘You know, I don’t really know,’” I replied.

“Resting his chin in his hand, he looked at me and said, ‘you’re going to have the longest summer vacation ever.”

So far, so good. “Right now, I’m sitting on my deck overlooking the Griffith Park Observatory,” Cox told me during a recent phone call.

“And it’s just gorgeous.”

Plymouth School founder steps down after 42 years

By Laura Eversz Taking the advice of one of her former teachers who retired after 25 years, Penny Cox plans to be out of town when classes start on Sept. 15. “She warned me that that will be the hardest time,” said Cox, who founded the Plymouth School with four others in 1972.

“But I’m going to be 82 soon, and it’s time,” said Cox. “It’s past time,” she laughed.

Cox recently stepped down as director after 42 years at the nursery school that originally opened in the United Method-

ist Church on Wilshire Blvd. and later moved to its current location in the Wilshire Presbyterian Church on Oxford Ave. She was feted by parents, current and former students and teachers at an end-of-theyear gathering in July at Harold Henry Park.

“You bet I’ll miss it,” said Cox. “The kids especially, and the parents, of course. We have wonderful parents, and every year you hate to see them leave, but then comes a wonderful new bunch. And the teachers, too, who are all very dear friends.”

Back to School History Museum dinosaur to star in show Hunter, the Natural History Museum resident juvenile dinosaur, will perform in "Walking with Dinosaurs-the Arena Spectacular" Sept. 3

to 7 at the Honda Center in Orange County and Sept. 11 to 14 at Staples Center as well as on a North American tour through January, 2015.

Hunter is a life-like, full body puppet covered in protofeathers. He appears regularly in the museum's Dinosaur Encounters performances.

Wilshire Girls’ Softball League kicks off fall season After capping off a successful All-Star run over the summer, the Wilshire Girls Softball League has begun practicing for the upcoming fall season.

The program offers four divisions: 6 and under, 8 and under, 10 and under and 12 and under. Games begin the weekend of Sept. 20; the season ends on Nov. 15.

Among highlights of the summer league was the 10U team’s winning record of 17 victories over seven weekends of tournament play, including a championship game in Re-

dondo against Torrance.

The 12U team capped off its successful All-Star run with an invitation to play in the ASA So-Cal Regional Tournament in San Diego, where they battled hard to pick up a win.

Wilshire Girls Softball plans to continue its partnership as the official little sister team of UCLA Women’s Softball, the most successful women’s college softball program in history.

Gem exhibit at History Museum Take the kids to the Natural History Museum (NHM) to see one of the rarest stones— an internally flawless 12-carat Fancy Vivid Blue diamond— at a temporary exhibition in the Gem Vault beginning Sat., Sept. 13.

Cut from a 29.6-carat rough, the gem is fashioned in a cushion-cut shape. The trace element boron within the car-

bon struture of the stone is responsible for its blue color.

The stone was found in a mine northeast of Pretoria, South Africa, known for discovering some of the most recognized blue and other color diamonds in the world.

Visitors can view the Blue Moon Diamond and learn more about it at the exhibition that runs through Jan. 6.

New conductor at L.A. Philharmonic Juan Felipe Molano has been

named as new conductor of Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA).

He graduated with honors from the Vienna Conservatory, has held positions as the music director of the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra, founding director of the Colombian Youth Philharmonic, and most recently, as artistic director of Youth Orchestra Salinas in California.

Molano will make his debut performance with YOLA in the L.A. Phil's "Toyota Symphonies for Youth" concert on Sat., Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

They are going to talk about schoolwork for the year. The breakfast is being organized by the PTA. Parents of 5th graders will find out about middle schools at a seminar. Hold on to your hats… we are excited for the school year to begin with a fresh start and to welcome our new dean. We were introduced to the sushi-loving May Oey, new dean of LCS at Hollygrove. She has been looking after kids since she was five. She comes to us from Santa Monica Boulevard Community Charter School.

“Being at Larchmont Charter School is like a dream come true,” said Mrs. Oey (pronounced “wee”). She is excited to meet all the students and their families.

When we asked her about changes in policy at the school, she declared there were no big changes at present but she hopes to give the school more “pizazz.” She says she has heard about some of the students’ concerns regarding recess and is working to find a compromise to make everyone happy.

She was very open to new ideas, and being a math lover, she liked the idea of having an all grade level science fair this year.

Mrs. Oey is married with two little boys. She told us she likes to give “150 percent to everything she does,” so we know that she will be dedicated to the welfare of our school.

The Wilshire Warriors 12 and under travel team recently participated in the 2014 Cooperstown Dream Park tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y.

The program fulfilled dreams of the players, coaches and parents alike, said Warriors mom Heather Boylston.

The Warriors and 101 other teams from as far away as Canada came to play for a national title.
