MORRISON WATER SERVICES SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES SPRAY LINING OF FRACTURED RISING WASTEWATER MAIN AT HATFIELD COLLIERY

The work was delivered on behalf of Yorkshire Water following a significant failure on the fractured wastewater main, laid in challenging ground conditions, 12m below a stretch of East Coast Main Line track.

Morrison Water Services, a part of M Group Services, has completed the successful spray lining of a 600mm cast iron wastewater rising main at Hatfield Colliery in Doncaster.

Following the successful completion of the repair, a key priority was to safeguard the main against any potential future failures in the vicinity of the railway and in its deepest sections.

Temporary pumps were quickly installed and connected to the existing automated control systems to mitigate the flows (up to 350 l/s) and large bulk, 12-metre stepped excavation works were undertaken to locate and repair the fractured main.

scheme, which will totally regenerate this key brownfield site, and create a brand new housing and leisure offer which is unlike anything else we currently have in this area. Willmott Dixon is a known and trusted company, which previously constructed the Rochdale Riverside retail and leisure development. On that project, they contracted key local companies like Hovingtons and created a number of local employment opportunities, including for ex armed forces personnel. “I’m looking forward to seeing them build on this track record to deliver wider social benefits once again this time round.” Upperbanks is a Rochdale Borough Council scheme being delivered by Rochdale Development Agency and is set for completion in early 2024. The critical location of the main, along with the complex engineering that would be required to resolve any future failures, were key drivers behind the proposal to extend the asset life through the spray lining technique.
