Company News MOTT MACDONALD SECURES 21 POSITIONS ON TFL’S ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY FRAMEWORK Mott MacDonald has secured 21 lots on Transport for London’s (TfL) latest Engineering Consultancy Services framework. The consultancy’s selection builds on its appointments last year to TfL’s Commercial Services, Project and Programme Management Services and Transport Planning and Environmental frameworks.

AMEY SECURES PLACE ON NATIONAL GRID FRAMEWORK Amey has successfully secured a contract with National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) on the RIIO-T2 Electricity Construction Mechanical and Electrical Installation Framework that will see its team deliver the design and build works on substations, as part of NGET asset replacement and build programme.

Mott MacDonald services that TfL can draw on via the framework include multi-disciplinary rail services; fire and safety engineering; building information modelling and the full range of specialist civil and rail systems engineering services.

The five-year framework requires Amey’s team to deliver works on the electricity transmission system including asset replacement, network reinforcement and connections.

Neil Henderson, Mott MacDonald’s TfL key account director said: “As a key supplier and partner to TfL we’re tremendously proud to have secured places on all four frameworks – a total of 43 lots. It is the result of a true collaborative effort by our Mott MacDonald teams, which will see us supporting TfL with our full range of professional services over the next three to four years. KIER PARTNERS WITH THRIVE TO LAUNCH NEW SOCIAL VALUE CALCULATOR Kier has partnered with Thrive, which is delivering a social value calculator that will capture, track and demonstrate social value across the Group.

Amey’s Power business has a long-serving and dedicated team of technical and construction specialists that has worked with National Grid since 2013.

The team has also worked with a range of energy providers on projects across the UK upgrading and reinforcing transmission and distribution electrical infrastructure, including wind farm connections and high voltage direct current (HVDC) developments.

Sustainable Development Goals. The system will enable Kier to track the social value targets of each project, as well as providing a suite of environmental metrics and a range of corporate-wide reporting. This bespoke data capture will allow Kier to provide its clients and other stakeholders with crucial data on a projects social value impact and success.

Since 2017, Kier has used its own social value calculator, Shaping our Communities Calculator. This was created in-house and provided Kier with helpful data that it could provide to its client and supply chain.

As demand for sustainability and social value metrics has increased, the Group has partnered with Thrive which offers a more mature software platform and the Impact Evaluation Standard (IES), a framework of metrics that cover over 109 different activities. This will enable Kier to continue to innovate and differentiate itself as a leader in the delivery of Social Value.

Thrive’s platform will also allow Kier to track its supply chain’s social value to capture the work its subcontractors do to support its projects. As well as this, Kier is working with Thrive to further enhance its measurement methodology to include additional costbenefit analysis metrics and its work with social mobility organisations such as LM3 to monitor regional spend.

WILLMOTT DIXON WINS EXTENSION PROJECT FOR LEICESTER’S INDEPENDENT ARTS HUB Willmott Dixon has won a £6.7 million contract to extend and improve Leicester’s renowned Phoenix cinema and art centre.

The project, which has been procured via SCAPE - one of the UK’s leading public sector procurement authorities - has funding support and investment from the Arts Council England and Leicester City Council. It extends the existing facility by adding two new cinema screens, allowing it to become a four-screen cinema, complete with a new art gallery, a bigger and better Café Bar, a roof terrace and more spaces for making and learning.

Being awarded another phase of works following completion of the initial build twelve years ago highlights how this standard has been embedded within the company for more than a decade.

“The build has also played a huge role in the area’s digital economy, attracting national funding and supporting initiatives to boost local tourism, so we’re incredibly proud to be a part of its continuing success. THE SCAFFOLDING ASSOCIATION WELCOMES NEW FUNDING THAT WILL PROVIDE £300M TO UK HOUSEBUILDERS AND SECURE WORK ACROSS THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR The Housing Growth Partnership Fund aims to support SME and regional housebuilders with the development of 10,000 new homes by 2025.

Established by Lloyds Banking Group and Homes England in 2016, the partnership enters its second phase helping to bridge the homebuilder funding gap, allowing housebuilders to build more houses across the UK and grow their own businesses so that they can support further projects in the future.

The partnership has already invested alongside 46 housebuilders to support the delivery of over 4,568 new homes, with nearly half now completed and sold to families across the UK. The latest funding will be broader in scope to enable investment into larger housebuilding projects with a development value of up to £75 million.

It will offer support for the delivery

of a wider range of housing projects including Build to Rent, Regeneration and Retirement Living. The partnership will also look to prioritise projects with a greater sustainability focus, as well as those using modern methods of construction and other evolutionary construction methods.

Robert Candy, Chief Executive of the Scaffolding Association, commented “A significant amount of construction is needed in the coming decade to fulfil the government’s plan for building 300,000 homes per annum and this funding will help with this ambitious target.

“However, there is still a great deal of uncertainty within the sector with product availability, rising material costs and skills shortages already resulting in developers pausing or rethinking their plans.

“Whilst this funding is of course welcome, it will not resolve these broader challenges”.

He added, “The Scaffolding Association is a strong advocate for improved skills provision and access to work within the construction sector and works tirelessly to highlight where improvements are needed to support growth with government, stakeholders, training boards and policy decision makers”.

CONSTRUCTION SECTOR URGED TO ‘STEP-UP’ IN RACE TO ADOPT GREENER HEATING SOLUTIONS Following recent revelations that UK’s home gas boilers emit twice as much CO2 as all power stations, the construction sector is being urged to accelerate the switch to greener heating solutions such as CO2 heat pumps, which have been described as ‘the future of green heating in the UK’.

The government’s target of 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028 is an encouraging step but Tim Rook, Chief Markets Officer at Clade Engineering, a leading designer and manufacturer of CO2 heat pumps, is concerned that the UK is a long way off the pace from hitting that target.

“Burning natural gas has historically been a cheap, reliable and relatively safe way to heat buildings in this country. But as this study

shows, things are going to have to change if we have any hope of reaching Net Zero. CO2 heat pumps are the future of green heating in the UK - they are more efficient, cleaner and have a lower total cost of ownership than gas boilers,” explains Tim. “We need to step up – and that’s going to take more awareness and more clamour across the construction, facilities management, property investment and property management industries,” suggests Tim. The recent energy price crisis adds further weight to this argument and has been caused by several long, medium and shortterm factors coming into play at the same time. It’s been coming down the tracks for a while, and touches on a couple of things that Clade Engineering consider extremely

important – the decarbonisation and security of Britain’s energy supply.

Installing a heat pump is one of the best things a business can do to decarbonise, and it’s fairly straightforward if engineered correctly.

A heat pump will deliver a 60 to 80% carbon reduction and when used for cooling too it’ll do even better. If plugged into a digital platform to optimise performance and provide grid flexibility services it will be able to deliver even more carbon reductions and cost savings.

For the good of the planet, we need to pull our collective fingers out,” says Tim.

CLIMATE EMERGENCY: INVEST IN COUNCILS TO GREEN RETROFIT OVER 1,000 HOMES A DAY – LGA Over 1,000 homes a day could be retrofitted with low-carbon efficiency measures by councils by 2030 - reducing energy bills by nearly £700 million – with the right investment and support, a revolutionary new plan unveiled by the Local Government Association sets out today.

Councils are a unique and powerful partner in achieving net zero, able to impact on more than a third of all emissions from villages, towns and cities, such as through housing, transport and the natural environment.

Ahead of the COP26 summit in Glasgow starting at the end of the month, a new report commissioned by the LGA, Delivering local net zero, sets out the case for why councils are best-placed to deliver green infrastructure projects in local communities, which would support the Government’s

ambition to level up, build back better and tackle the climate emergency.

The LGA is calling on the Government to use next week’s Spending Review to begin work with councils and businesses on a national fiscal and policy framework to address the climate emergency.

With the right powers and investment of £12.2 billion by 2030, the LGA report sets out how councils can:

BOUNCING BACK: MEDWAY RESIDENTS SET FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION CAREERS A celebration took place to mark formerly unemployed Medway residents completing a programme to enter the booming construction industry.

The graduation ceremony took place at the Dalefield Way Industrial Park base of building contractors O’Halloran & O’Brien (OHOB), which saw group members receive certificates and job offers.

Board (CITB) with support from Medway Council, saw a fortnight of intense training for the eleven residents in a variety of skills including in scaffolding, site safety, asbestos, steel fixing, practice job interviews and vehicle marshalling.

The programme has led to qualifications for the residents enabling them to work on a construction site straight away, or undertake an apprenticeship, or specialise in further training for an in-demand trade such as scaffolding.

The LGA said the Spending Review and COP26 summit should mark the beginning of a new climate change partnership between central and local government, and see a new approach to investment that gives councils the long-term funding to decarbonise building stock, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport and deliver clean energy projects.

In order to safely meet the Committee on Climate Change’s balanced pathway to net zero, further investment is needed to help councils shift 1.5 billion journeys from cars to walking or cycling in England by 2030.

Construction in the South East has bounced back strongly from COVID-19 meaning 16,750 additional jobs have to be created by 2025, according to research from CITB. The industry in the region is expected to grow by an annual average rate of 4.4%, and recovering to pre-pandemic growth levels by 2022.

To be eligible for Get Into Construction training, delivered by OHOB and Medway Adult Education, you must be a Medway resident aged over 16 not in education, employment or training.

ARUP’S NEW CLASS OF 2021 AIMING TO ENGINEER EXCITING CAREERS Global design, planning and engineering firm Arup has welcomed a fresh intake of apprentices and newly qualified graduates to support its Nottingham team’s work on a wide range of major projects.

John Read, Nottingham office leader at Arup, said: “We are delighted that they are with us and look forward to seeing their careers develop as they take advantage of the enormous opportunities that working for Arup can provide.

The sought-after roles underline the company’s commitment to the city and its continued growth in the region, as well as providing a huge boost for its successful apprenticeship scheme.

Two recently recruited apprentice technicians and two new university graduates are now part of the 100-plus strong city team.

It’s hugely important to be able to attract and train the next generation of engineers and technicians.

Four further Nottingham-based apprentices have also recently completed their part-time degrees with the company.

Arup’s world-class designers, planners, engineers, architects, consultants and technical specialists work across all aspects of the built environment.

Arup, which has its headquarters in London, employs 6,000 people across 17 UK offices, and thousands more worldwide. It took on 14 apprentices and 21 graduates between its offices in Nottingham and Birmingham this autumn, and 245 graduates and 74 apprentices in total across the UK. The Nottingham office recently saw colleagues Vicky Evans and Steve Fernandez promoted to directors of the global firm.

PLATFORM LIFTS - THE CHOICES AND THE DIFFERENCES Lifts are key to the vertical circulation of people in any public building. Whether it’s a simple change in the level where it’s not possible to provide a ramp, or the building has two or more floors that people need to travel between. Lifts also are invaluable when it comes to ensuring easy access for those with impaired mobility across multiple storeys.

Lifts that move people fall into two categories, passenger lifts or platform lifts.

The options can be endless (and confusing!) when it comes to platform lifts but these types of lift can be grouped into five broad categories.

Low-speed lifts/ Hybrid lifts Also called low pit lifts, these are wallmounted or structure-supported lifts that have the look and feel of a traditional passenger lift, with the same doors, cabin and operation, but travel at a reduced speed.

All these access lifts provide disabled access in low-rise buildings where a passenger lift is not available (or it is impractical to install one), and are based on the number of people you want to move to and the travel distance.

Cabin lifts These lifts are built in a structure, with passengers travelling in a cabin with walls, a floor and a ceiling to give it a more enclosed feel with the lift operation being one-touch.

Enclosed platform lifts These lifts are in a structure with a moving platform and control panel moving up inside the structure.. The lift operation used here is constant pressure.

Open platform lifts Typically used over short lengths of travel these lifts vertically move the user(s) on a guarded platform from one level to another.

Wheelchair platform stairlifts Also called inclined platform lifts, these lifts have a platform that follows the curve of the stairs and are only suitable for one user.

All these access lifts provide disabled access in low-rise buildings where a passenger lift is not available (or it is impractical to install one), and are based on the number of people you want to move to and the travel distance.

These lifts can also be used for passengers with buggies and luggage, subject to weight limits.

IRISH CRANES INSTALLS TWO OF FOUR RAIMONDI CRANES IN DUBLIN CITY CENTRE Topless tower cranes to contribute to build of mixed-use College Square jobsite Raimondi agent of Ireland, Irish Cranes & Lifting, recently erected two flattop tower cranes as part of a four-crane package on the College Square jobsite. Located in the heart of Dublin, Ireland, College Square is a mixed-use development that will include both residential and commercial space spread over a 21 storey tower.

The four cranes planned for the jobsite by year’s end include the recentlydelivered new MRT159, MRT189 and LRH174, all ordered by Irish Cranes to add to their existing fleet. The final crane planned for the site is an existing MRT213, already owned by the fleet rental company.

NEW DIGITAL TWINS PROJECT LOOKS AT LANGUAGE BARRIERS Leading voices from the construction sector and beyond have come together to explore the ‘language problem’ with Digital Twins that arises from a lack of coordination and consistency between sectors.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), together with the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB) as a partner in the Construction Innovation Hub, techUK and supported by the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, have launched the ‘Apollo Protocol’ with the aim of helping different industries to communicate more effectively, reducing silos and improving co-ordination for more collaborative and sustainable outcomes.

At present, the manufacturing and built environment sectors are developing their concepts of digital twins separately. The Protocol is to investigate the language barriers between the digital twins of different sectors and to develop recommendations to increase the interoperability between sectors.

Rick Hartwig, IET Built Environment Lead, said: “Digital Twins offer huge benefits for society but only a coordinated approach to the language used will allow those benefits to be realised.

“There are many steps to improving information management – from the manufacturers and their product information and frameworks, to technology companies producing in the Digital Twin space who need the availability of data to construct models.

“It goes much further than just the manufacturing, built environment and technology industries - policy makers will only meet their sustainability goals if they can provide clarity during procurement for the market to respond effectively, so it will take a whole system approach.”

The project team will bring together experts in the field and intends to publish a white paper in the Autumn identifying some of the challenges.

NEW MANCHESTER LANDMARK SHINES A LIGHT ON LOW CARBON HEAT NETWORK

TILBURY DOUGLAS SET TO DELIVER £3M CROWN STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT AT LIVERPOOL WOMEN’S HOSPITAL Tilbury Douglas, a leading UK building, infrastructure, engineering and fitout company, has been appointed to lead the £3m Crown Street Improvement project at Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

As its name suggests, the Trust specialises in the health of women and their babies - both within the hospital and out in the community. It is the only specialist trust of its kind in the UK and the largest women’s hospital of its kind. The ground floor modernised unit will provide a dedicated Imaging and Colposcopy Department. The project will start on site the 29th October and is due to complete May 2022. The works follow on from the completion of the new second floor Fetal Medicine Unit.

The appointment of Tilbury Douglas comes after its successful completion of Liverpool Women’s Neonatal Unit in 2020. This new project will include the same design team – Gilling Dod Architects, Hoare Lea and Sutcliffes.

The network, which will go live early next year, will help them to reduce their carbon emissions and support the city’s transition to zero carbon by 2038.

Manchester’s new Tower of Light structure has been officially switched on, marking a milestone in the development of the city’s new Civic Quarter Heat Network.

Owned by the Council and built by Vital Energi, the focal point of the Civic Quarter Heat Network is the 40m Tower of Light, which will be lit up every night. The tower will be a striking new landmark in the city centre and be the most visible manifestation of the network, which will provide heating and electricity to some of Manchester city centre’s most iconic buildings. The network, which will go live early next year, will help them to reduce their carbon emissions and support the city’s transition to zero carbon by 2038.

Using low carbon power generated in an energy centre located underneath the railway arches by Manchester Central, the network will serve the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester Central Convention Complex, Central Library, Heron House, Manchester Art Gallery and Manchester Town Hall and Town Hall extension buildings via 2km of underground pipes.

And the network will also have the capacity to connect to other buildings in the vicinity - both existing and future, whether public or privateowned – helping them to reduce their carbon footprints too.

BUILDING BACK GREENER: HOW CONSTRUCTION CAN AND SHOULD BE MORE SUSTAINABLE With COP26 fast approaching and the question of sustainability gaining momentum, the construction industry is faced with increasingly complex challenges to reduce its impact on the environment and natural resources. James Ellis, chair of the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s Construction Industry Group (CIMCIG) outlines how and why the industry should be rising to the challenge.

As the UK Government commits to low carbon construction and consumers make greater demands for sustainable produce, the sustainability agenda is being driven from the top down and the bottom up.

However, the challenging economic conditions of recent years – not least the COVID-19 crisis - and the subsequent caution in investment mean that, while sustainability may have been accepted as a guiding policy for construction, its implementation has been inconsistent.

Many working in the built environment are still unaware of the benefits of implementing sustainable solutions, our moral obligation to do so, or even what is meant by ‘sustainability in construction’.

Is it designing and building a project in the most sustainable manner, or about how you retrofit existing buildings to be more sustainable? Is it about offsetting your carbon footprint when constructing the project? Is it about enhancing the natural environment upon completing a project?

It is a combination of all of these and more, depending on the customer’s needs.

There are some great examples within the construction industry of sustainable best practice, and these are often found in the self-build market. This is a niche part of construction that embraces sustainable solutions because the end customer is often developing their ‘forever home’ and therefore focused on the long-term benefits of the home they are building and the payback of the investment.

Nevertheless, commercial businesses can look to these projects and in particular their use of products such as solar PV, battery storage and air source heat pumps.

Currently commercial businesses continue to build to the minimum requirements to meet customer needs. For example, we are still building homes with gas boilers despite an upcoming ban on gas central heating in the UK. There is also a growing appetite (and need) to repurpose and refurbish buildings rather than demolish and build new. The Architects’ Journal launched its ‘Retrofirst’ campaign in 2019 with the slogan ‘the greenest building is the one that already exists’.

If you implement sustainable best practices during construction, it can save time and costs, improve relations with statutory agencies and neighbouring communities, as well as add value to the development itself.

James Ellis When you consider that 80% of the building stock we will have in 30 years has already been built, you can appreciate the need for innovative and sustainable retrofit/re-use/ de-carbonisation of existing buildings to meet net zero carbon by 2050.

New projects are often focused on the customer’s needs, which normally focuses on a fixed price model to design and build their project and does not consider the lifetime value of the project. The opposite could be said of homeowners, who might want to retrospectively install sustainable solutions to their property, but the current property design or level of investment up front presents challenges.

Specific manufacturers have identified opportunities for sustainable best practice, such as off-site construction, which is driving efficiency on site in reducing the carbon footprint, but more can be done.

So, how can construction companies ensure they are sustainable?

1.) Make sustainability part of your core business strategy Collectively the industry has a long way to go to implement sustainable best practice, and as we emerge from the pandemic, we must not treat sustainability as a buzz word. Instead, it should be seen as a core business strategy where sustainable values are embraced by all employees.

This allows businesses to differentiate themselves and build a sustainable brand, allowing the business to promote itself to customers with the same sustainable goals. Sustainability has and will continue to change how business has to think, plan and behave at every point in the stakeholder chain.

2.) Partner with credible organisations Businesses should also align with likeminded organisations, whether the UK Green Building Council or partner with the Carbon Trust, proving their credentials through accreditation, collaboration and visibility.

3.) Follow the Biodiversity Net Gain agenda To this end, it’s worth adhering to the principles of Biodiversity Net Gain, in which a development leaves biodiversity in a measurably better state. How we get there is challenging, but achievable. It’s a change from the old “infrastructure versus nature” approach to one where infrastructure is designed, built and maintained in ways that benefit our environment.

If we’re to achieve a biodiversity net gain and improve the green credentials of our industry, there is a need for a culture shift to fully embrace sustainability, but this change can only be successful if the customer demands sustainable solutions and businesses are transparent about their sustainability goals.

4.) Don’t fall foul of ‘greenwashing’ your environmental credentials There is a risk that businesses may try to ‘greenwash’ their customers without a clear sustainable strategy and credentials to support their growth in sustainability.

Instead, we need to celebrate examples of excellence in sustainable delivery within the construction industry.

5.) Be influenced by the circular economy The circular economy is an economic model that aims to combat sustainable challenges, like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste and pollution.

Waste management and building materials used by manufacturers and civil engineers alike, all point to how sustainable they are to the environment and to costs in the sector. What is now clear is a more circular approach can significantly improve the amount of recycling and reusing of resources in the industry, while reducing the amount of waste that leaves it. Marketing departments within construction companies are ideally placed to showcase sustainable solutions and case studies to drive greater engagement.

If we can bring such projects into the spotlight, I am confident we can overcome the stumbling blocks of awareness and cost but be recognisable of the recognition that we have a moral obligation to make a difference.

SCHÖCK ISOKORB MEETS A NUMBER OF CHALLENGES AT LOTS ROAD Once a neglected industrial site, Chelsea Waterfront in SW10, is being impressively transformed and minimising any risk of thermal bridging throughout has been key.

In addition to meeting compliance with the Building Regulations, this is also important in meeting the criteria for the impending Future Homes Standard. The Isokorb load-bearing structural thermal break from Schöck offers the ideal solution in meeting all necessary compliances.

This is a two-phase development; the first being completed in 2019 and resulting in four riverside buildings and a 37-storey West Tower. The second phase is now well under way with the centrepiece being the old Lots Road Power Station, which first became operational in 1905 and eventually powered most of the London Underground for almost 80 years. The old Power Station is an iconic building and careful refurbishment will result in retention of the external walls, steel frame, chimneys and selected internal steelwork. When finished, the 13-storey building (now called the Metropolitan) will house 193 apartments and accommodate shops, restaurants and cafes along a 100 metre mall at ground floor level. Also, as part of this second phase, alongside the main Metropolitan Building there will be a 25 storey East Tower and two nine-storey refurbished residential buildings, one of which is a rotunda.

Minimising thermal bridging throughout Throughout the entire development, improving the performance of the building envelope and minimising any risk of thermal bridging has been a key element in the design detailing. Quite apart from meeting compliance with the Building Regulations, this is increasingly important in meeting the criteria for the impending Future Homes Standard. Thermal bridges are localised areas of the building envelope, where the heat flow is usually increased in comparison with adjacent areas. As a result, the temperature of the interior surface near the thermal bridge is lower and if this area becomes too cold it can lead to condensation. Over time, mould is likely to form, potentially damaging the building structure and even posing a health risk to the inhabitants. The ideal solution is the Isokorb load-bearing structural thermal break from Schöck, which has featured throughout since the start of the development. Primarily the requirement has been for conventional balcony detailing and involved the Isokorb T type K for concreteto-concrete and the T type SK for concreteto-steel. The SK is a complete system thermal break and is unique in being the only formally UK approved product that satisfies the load-bearing and thermal insulation requirements for this type of application.

There were though a number of special demands as well.

capacity considerations, as well as delivery scheduling challenges involving different sites.

There was a major revision also involving the 13-storey Metropolitan Building. Isokorb units T type SQ, were to be incorporated at all levels to bolt the external steel walkways back to the concrete frame. However, there was a late design change to the project, which resulted in the steel walkways being converted to concrete on all but the first floor. This resulted in a complete review of the structural thermal break requirements and a tie force also had to be accommodated into the design to tie the balcony walkway structures back to the main structural frame.

LOCOS CHAIRMAN HOPES TEAM PAVE WAY TO SUCCESS IN GPH BUILDERS MERCHANTS HIGHLAND LEAGUE CUP Inveurie Locos Chairman Mike Macaulay has even more reason to hope his side go all the way in the GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup after the Garioch side were drawn at home against Huntly in the first round of this season’s competition.

Mark Tattershall, who heads up construction at Bovis Homes’ Hampton Water site, is one of 26 site managers in the NHBC’s East region to achieve a Seal of Excellence in this year’s Pride in the Job awards.

The winners were announced on Friday 8 October at the NHBC’s East regional awards ceremony.

They were selected from those who achieved Pride in the Job Quality Awards in June, which recognised the vital work and dedication of the UK’s most elite site managers.

Mark scooped his first NHBC Pride in the Job award this year, which led on to him securing the prestigious Seal of Excellence. Both awards were earned for his work at Hampton Water.

Mark started overseeing construction work at Hampton Water – his first Bovis Homes site – in July last year, having previously worked as a site manager with Linden Homes for three years. Both developers are part of Vistry Group, which also includes Vistry Partnerships.

Mark said: “Given that this is my first year receiving a Quality Award, to come out with a Seal of Excellence is a huge honour. Attending the awards ceremony with my colleagues David and Gareth was a fantastic experience, and I felt so proud when my name was called.

“This achievement is not a solo effort, but a reflection of the hard work of the whole site team, who’re passionate about what they do and committed to delivering high-quality homes for our customers.

“The pandemic brought its own set of challenges, including health and safety hazards and a shortage of materials and labour, so I feel even more proud of myself and the team for securing this award in such difficult circumstances – particularly as I only took charge of Hampton Water in July last year.”

PROJECT MANAGER RECEIVES SEAL OF EXCELLENCE FOR WORK ON NEW HOMES IN BARKING RIVERSIDE The project manager of a new homes development in Barking Riverside has received a prestigious housebuilding industry award.

Sean Chappell has been awarded a Seal of Excellence from the National HouseBuilding Council (NHBC) for his work at Bellway London Partnerships’ Fielders Quarter, off Fielders Crescent.

This is the latest stage of the NHBC’s Pride in the Job awards scheme, which saw Sean’s commitment to delivering high-

quality homes recognised with a Quality Award earlier this year.

Bellway London Partnerships is the national housebuilder’s newest division, which launched in 2019.

Sean said: “To win a Quality Award this year was great, so to receive the Seal of Excellence award is fantastic and very humbling. We have no track record as a brand-new division, so this recognition has been a great achievement for our entire team. Although it has not been easy dealing with the effects of the pandemic,

UK’S FIRST LARGE-SCALE WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMP PROJECT OFFICIALLY OPENS The award-winning Queens Quay Heat Pump Energy Centre is providing low-carbon heating to the first phases of the £250m Clydebank-based development and members of West Dunbartonshire Council, Vital Energi and Star Renewables recently gathered to celebrate the achievement at an official opening.

system, alongside a number of other steps taken by the Council, will help us achieve our goal to be net zero by 2045 and lead the way in tackling the climate emergency.”

The network was designed to accommodate further growth, with the potential to expand beyond Queens Quay over several phases. The network has been future-proofed, and pipework has been installed to supply the forthcoming Health Centre, West College Scotland, the first 140 flats and retail units currently on site, all other homes planned for the site as well as Clydebank Library and Clydebank Town Hall.

The opening is a particularly timely showcase of Scottish innovation as world leaders are set to gather in Glasgow for the COP26 United Nations Conference.

The £20m project, which was delivered by Vital Energi on behalf of West Dunbartonshire Council will provide heating and hot water to the 23-hectare Queens Quay development which includes plans for 1,200 homes, businesses and public buildings. The initial phase connects Aurora House, the Titan Enterprise Centre, Clydebank Leisure Centre and care home, Queens Quay House.

At full build out the project will deliver circa 5,705 tonnes of CO2 reduction per year due to grid decarbonisation.

Scott Lutton, Vital Energi’s Operations Director – North & Scotland said, “With COP26 fast approaching it is timely that we showcase the local authorities who have successfully delivered initiatives to meet their carbon targets and are an inspiration to others. West Dunbartonshire Council have shown that it is possible to, not only deliver large carbon reduction by harnessing renewable technology, but that this heat can be delivered at a more affordable price.

One of the truly exciting things about this development is that it will continue to grow over multiple phases, increasing in scale, becoming more efficient and allowing more people, businesses and organisations to access low-carbon heat.”

Future plans also include connections to the Golden Jubilee Hospital, Clyde Shopping Centre Dalmuir Flats, and into the town centre.

The energy centre houses two 2.65MW water source heat pumps which extract water from the River Clyde at a rate of 125 litres per second and use the latent heat to produce heating and hot water for the development via a 5km district heating network.

Councillor Iain McLaren, Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “I am extremely proud to officially open the West Dunbartonshire Energy Centre. This ambitious project has been many years in the making and it’s a pleasure to see the system up and running, providing lowcarbon heat energy to so many buildings already, and with the capability of expansion throughout Clydebank.

“As the world turns its eyes to the West of Scotland for COP26, and we work to agree action to try and halt the climate emergency, we are determined to do our part. This

The project has been overseen by main contractor Kier and is embracing a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) concept. This will integrate digital tools to drive efficiencies in the design, construction and operation of the facility. The project is the first in a series of schemes to be undertaken as part of the Ministry of Justice’s New Prison Programme.

Wieland worked with building services providers Crown House Technologies to provide its RST® and GST® cable assemblies for the off-site prefabricated risers which fed the power, lighting and ancillary services to the individual prison cells and communal areas. All of the cabling in the cells was fully pluggable and incorporated Wieland’s GST® and GST® MINI systems. Wieland also supplied an extra low voltage lighting control system for cell lighting.

LAND & WATER COMPLETES RESTORATION WORKS AT CHRIST’S HOSPITAL CHARITY SCHOOL Leading wet civil engineering firm Land & Water has completed works at the Royal Chartered Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham to restore two lakes which will be used as part of the school’s new transformational curricular which places great emphasis on learning skills for life.

The project has seen some of the Land & Water team, alongside its bioengineering arm Terraqua Environmental Solutions (TES) and trusted suppliers, volunteer their time and provide works at a reduced cost to support the school’s ethos of providing pupils of all social backgrounds with the opportunity to thrive and fulfil their potential.

WITCHFORD DEVELOPMENT NEARS KEY MILESTONE Almost a third of the homes on a new development in Witchford have now been built and occupied by their new residents.

Bovis Homes is building a total of 170 homes at Pemberton Park, off Field End in the village, and has so far seen buyers move into 39 of the 132 new homes for private sale.

Meanwhile, 10 of the 38 homes being delivered within the new neighbourhood as affordable housing for rent or shared ownership have also been completed and have new occupants.

Thomas, said: “Construction work at Pemberton Park is progressing well and demand for the homes is high. We have already delivered 39 private homes where people have completed and moved in. Incorporating HVO fuel into its machinery, a 90+% net carbon biofuel which substantially reduces carbon emissions compared to conventional gas oil, Land & Water successfully dredged and re-established two lakes on the school grounds which will be used for open water swimming, fishing, biology lessons and for cadet force training and other broader curricular pursuits. The dredged sediments have been recycled for re-use as an agricultural soil improver on the school’s farm.

WILLMOTT DIXON LANDS LATEST ROCHDALE REGENERATION SCHEME Willmott Dixon has been appointed by Rochdale Borough Council for another large regeneration that will see the company deliver 242 apartments and a Hampton by Hilton hotel in the town centre.

Work on the £60m scheme, known and as Upperbanks, will start next month with Willmott Dixon aiming to ensure 40 per cent of its local spend is within a 20 mile radius of the site, while 75 per cent spent within 40 miles.

Upperbanks has already generated over £20m of external funding, attracting over £17m from the government’s Future High Streets Fund and more than £3m from the Greater Manchester’s Combined Authority’s Brownfield Development Fund.

The work was delivered on behalf of Yorkshire Water following a significant failure on the fractured wastewater main, laid in challenging ground conditions, 12m below a stretch of East Coast Main Line track.

Morrison Water Services, a part of M Group Services, has completed the successful spray lining of a 600mm cast iron wastewater rising main at Hatfield Colliery in Doncaster.

Following the successful completion of the repair, a key priority was to safeguard the main against any potential future failures in the vicinity of the railway and in its deepest sections.

Temporary pumps were quickly installed and connected to the existing automated control systems to mitigate the flows (up to 350 l/s) and large bulk, 12-metre stepped excavation works were undertaken to locate and repair the fractured main.

Upperbanks is a Rochdale Borough Council scheme being delivered by Rochdale Development Agency and is set for completion in early 2024.

The critical location of the main, along with the complex engineering that would be required to resolve any future failures, were key drivers behind the proposal to extend the asset life through the spray lining technique.

The survey found that 47% agreed that British made products are superior, with the majority of bathroom fitters, who make up a sizable portion CT1’s trade customer-base, opting to buy from UK manufactures when they have the choice.

The visit included the impressive civils and infrastructure works that Winvic has delivered, the recently handed-over 550,000 sq ft facility for DSV and the progress of Jaguar Land Rover’s 2.94 million sq ft global parts logistics centre, as well as Winvic and IM Properties’ commitment to sustainability and innovation that has culminated in the opening of the first satellite Sustainability and Innovation Hub. The Hub comprises three zones – Sustainability, Innovation and Learning – which provide areas to showcase Mercia Park’s sustainability

credentials, demonstrate Winvic’s digital advancements, train Winvic’s staff and supply chain more creatively than ever and inspire young people through educational visits. Its proximity to the ‘Future of Construction’ Training Centre also means both facilities can be used for linked training activities. One key feature of the SIH is a 360-degree BIM CAVE area, which will aid the BIM design process in a realtime scenario by facilitating design team meetings and workshops and help develop VR imagery for health and safety training.

Unlike the BIM CAVE located at Winvic’s Centre for Innovative Construction, it is a 360-degree resource where Virtual Reality (VR) 3D design models can be viewed as an immersive room experience, without a headset.

Members of Winvic’s supply chain have partnered with the main contractor to bring the SIH to life, while IMP has provided the land. Carter Accommodation has supplied the cabins, Bespoke Construction the internal partitions and glazing; the PV and battery storage has been provided

by Ivegate and the interactive screens by Walter Miles Electrical, while A & L Block Paving has undertaken all works to the external areas. Winvic has also sourced all the internal and external wall graphics and signage for the Hub through local social enterprise Nuneaton Signs.

Also found within the SIH, there is an interactive meeting room, training and learning space and an area with a 3D printer. Visitors, such as school, college and university students, can also get hands on with Winvic’s digital Operation and Maintenance Manuals, whereby they

can access sections of a design manual, maintenance guidance or 360-degree photos by using QR codes, in the same way end-users can within their finished building.

Not only did the visiting party from NWLDC get hands-on, enjoy a demonstration of the BIM CAVE and see the facilities, but they also witnessed PGL Midlands delivering Face-fit training for Bespoke Construction, onsite and classroom IPAF Training being delivered onsite by Nationwide. Activities also included an interactive demonstration at the Sika Concrete Mobile Training Laboratory and a tour of the on-site concrete batching plant as part of Hanson’s concrete sustainability CPD training. To end the visit, Winvic and IMP took the NWLDC Leader, Deputy Leader and Chief Executive on a Mercia Park site tour where they saw the progress of the Jaguar Land Rover project.

Project News KIER CELEBRATES THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF DIO’S NEW £12M HEADQUARTERS AT DMS WHITTINGTON Kier has celebrated the official opening of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s (DIO’s) brand-new £12m headquarters at DMS Whittington in Staffordshire. The project was appointed to Kier Graham Defence Ltd through the DIO Framework project and is part of the Defence Estate Optimisation Portfolio, which is investing £4.3billion in modern, greener and more sustainable facilities for Defence over the next decade.

An opening event to mark the official opening of St George’s House at DMS Whittington was attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, DIO Chief Executive along with Kier representatives and included a parachute jump by the Silver Stars, as well as an unveiling of a hologram to officially open the building.

Construction works for the new headquarters included the construction of a 2,600m² office building as well as a car park providing 230 additional car parking spaces. The building can accommodate 300 people and predominantly sits over two-storeys with some additional thirdfloor space for meeting rooms, including an impressive atrium which creates a striking backdrop at the main entrance.

Throughout the build, modern methods of construction and digital construction were utilised to add efficient delivery of this project.

Construction work started on site in January 2020 and completed August 2021.

Chris Stevens, Kier Construction operations director, said “The existing military site has been transformed into a place where DIO employees have modern, fit-for-purpose offices and we are pleased to have completed and handed over this fantastic building to DIO. Well done to the Kier project team who have gone above and beyond during COVID to deliver this impressive and modern facility.”

NORTH EAST’S ‘HIDDEN’ ENGINEERING FEAT The North East is famous for its walls – Hadrian’s is probably the best known but various town and city walls across the region are also of great historic significance.

Every year, millions of people visit them and marvel at the engineering skills displayed by their construction.

However, a similarly impressive set of walls has been built in recent months and the work has gone almost completely unnoticed.

With a combined length of more than a kilometre, reaching almost 8.8 metres at the highest point and with a surface area in excess of 4,800 square metres, the seven retaining walls now approaching completed at The Rise housing development, in Scotswood, are believed to be the biggest such structures built in the UK in recent years – and there are nine still to build.

They are creating a series of terraces on the steeply sloping Tyneside valley - allowing the construction of new homes which are part of a major regeneration programme in Newcastle’s west end.

ROAD TO NET ZERO Climate Change- a term quickly becoming ever more prominent in the makeup of everyday life. From family discussions to news headlines, the topic dominates current social spheres, and rightly so.

With politicians and bureaucrats disguising the issue through political grandeur and meek reactionary “actions on climate”, it seems fitting to address the basic premise of the climate crisis, and to shed light on the importance of the power and will of the people in response to its impending imposition.

The news recently has offered a bleak outlook of the current international situation the globe finds itself in regarding climate change, and unfortunately, it is only set to worsen.

Increased instances of wildfires, flooding and massive landslides have been documented over the past few months, and year on year global temperatures have increased, with 2020 marking the hottest year on record.

The quickly deteriorating global situation requires monumental solutions and transformational changes to global structures and an even greater shift in attitudes and mobilisation from the public.

The latest IPCC report has identified what many already new, that without action, the effects of climate change will worsen and pose a grave threat to humanity and life systems on earth as we know it.

But this is not a time to despair, this is a time for action, and there is no time better than the present.

There is no denying that global environmental, climate policy has been inadequate, and goals set by politicians and business leaders alike have severely undermined the impending nature of the climate crisis. Current UK targets aim for Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, a very long way away in the rapidly accelerating and progressive nature of anthropogenic climate change. Nationally Determined Contributions from nations within the Paris climate agreement may have looked good from a diplomatic perspective, but 6 years later and the current goals set would take the world far beyond the 1.5C of warming the IPCC will warn is the threshold of safety.

The precedent set by world leaders and politicians has so far failed to declare the importance of adequate global climate change legislation, but we can change that. COP26 takes place in November and is a huge opportunity to declare the severity of our global struggle against climate change and do something meaningful against it.

Engage with movements that hold politicians to account and encourage them to implement the changes society needs to see. And most importantly, talk, remain active on this issue amongst circles of friends and family, work colleagues and associates alike, if we keep pressing on this issue, the likelihood is that solutions are attainable for a cleaner, greener and fairer world.

HOW PERMASTEELISA DEPLOYS HANDSFREE CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT Via Autodesk’s Digital Builder blog Today, construction companies have more choice than ever before when it comes to technology.

Twenty years ago, technology-forward companies were setting up infrastructure to have laptops and internet at job sites.

Ten years later, we saw smartphones and tablets becoming an industry standard.

Now, wearables and extended reality (XR) devices are becoming increasingly common on jobsites.

Feature ONEROUS CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS – 10 KEY POINTS TO BE AWARE OF Before entering a construction contract, subcontractors and contractors should check if it is onerous to reduce the risk of cashflow problems, and even insolvency.

Simon Dunkling, Director at Arbicon, explains the top 10 key points to be aware of: 1. Payment Provisions A construction contract must contain payment provisions that comply with the Construction Act, including an adequate mechanism for determining the payment schedule, providing a final date for payment, and providing for the giving of a payment notice not later than five days after the due date.

TIP - Non-compliant clauses can often be vague, as well as incorporating extended and lengthy payment provisions which can lead to confusion and dispute between parties. Such clauses or provisions should be negotiated to ensure clarity and compliance.

2. Defects and Retention Clauses that make payment conditional on performance under another contract, for example the issuing of the certificate of making good defects under the main contract, or those drafted to only release retention to the subcontractor on completion of the main contract, are noncompliant with the Construction Act and payment of the retention can be forced.

3. Set-Off Clause Set-off clauses that not only allow deduction from sums due, but also require reimbursement to the employer could cause cashflow problems. Clauses which allow the employer to set-off sums due under one contract against sums reimbursable under a different contract may also be problematic.

TIP - Understand the extent of the events and matters in bespoke contracts which give rise to extended time or loss, the associated risks for delays, and the resulting costs and exposure to delays damages. Similar consideration should be given to loss and expense provisions in bespoke or amended contracts which may be much more restrictive than those in standard forms.

6. Condition Precedent A condition precedent is a clause that makes the rights under a contract clause pre-requisite on the fulfilment of a prior obligation. A failure to comply could lead to your contractual rights being diminished or lost altogether.

TIP - If you identify condition precedents in contracts, consider whether you can comply with the requirement and the consequence of failing to comply. If you are unable to comply or unwilling to accept the commercial risk of failing to comply, then it would be prudent to negotiate amendments to the clause or have the condition precedent removed.

7. Acceleration Omission and Supplementation Bespoke clauses allowing the employer to alter the scope of the works and programme to suit their own requirements are very unfavourable and if identified, consideration should be given to the acceptance of such commercial risk.

TIP - Generally, if unacceptable to you, it would be prudent to negotiate amendments to the clauses or have them removed.

TIP - Care should be taken to understand the extent of the rights and remedies that they afford to the employer, and likewise the risk placed on the contractor.

TIP - Identify and understand the rights, and risks associated with such clauses. For example, a clause that allows the employer to terminate for convenience coupled with a clause that prevents the contractor claiming loss of profit following termination, would allow the employer to terminate the contractor on a whim and with no financial consequences. The contractor could be left with no workflow, idle resources, and with no financial right to claim for the loss that they incur as a result.

9. Conclusivity Provisions A conclusively clause is designed to provide finality and certainty, and to prevent disputes from being prolonged for an extended period.

It is important to identify such conditions within a contract, and to understand the timescales that apply and the risk for failure to comply. In particular, consideration should be given to any conclusivity provision that provides a very short period of time to challenge the certificate or decision. There can be a substantial risk if for example, you dispute a final certificate, but the contract provides insufficient time for you to properly compile your claim and commence dispute proceedings.

TIP - If you identify such clauses and are concerned as to the ability to comply, then it would be prudent to negotiate amendments to the clause to either (a) provide a longer timescale prior to the matter becoming final and binding, or (b) have the conclusivity provision removed.

10. The Particulars It is important to check that the particulars of the contract are accurate, for example, details of the parties, scope of works, what the contract documents are, the programme and that the contract cost is correct. Basic errors, vagueness, or ambiguity can often creep into the contract and lead to significant issues.

How to deal with Onerous Contracts It is always best to examine a construction contract closely before it is entered into, onerous contracts may be apparent from the start of the works or when unavoidable circumstances occur such as material shortages, delays or unpredictable costs. By understanding the contract terms and provisions from the outset, disputes can often be avoided.

4. Design Responsibility If design responsibility is not fully understood it can lead to vulnerability to unexpected cost, time, and being contractually required to undertake design over and above what was intended.

TIP - If you identify design responsibilities that you are unwilling to accept then care should be taken to negotiate the responsibilities and ensure the contract

8. Termination Provisions Termination provisions are common in construction contracts, and it is important to review them and understand what rights and remedies they provide the parties.

STATE-OF-THE-ART FLOUR MILL PROJECT COMPLETES A brand-new state-of-the-art flour mill and warehouse – the largest to be constructed in the UK in recent years – has been completed for GR Wright & Sons in Harlow, Essex, by Clegg Food Projects, specialists in the construction of food and drink facilities.

Clegg Food Projects was appointed as the principal contractor for the project, responsible for the overall design and construction of the mill and warehousing facility. This included extensive ground preparation, the civil and structural build, and the installation of the specialist processing and milling equipment.
