NURSERY SWAPS TOY DIGGERS FOR REAL ONES AS WINVIC PUTS ON A PLAYGROUND CONSTRUCTION SHOW

Flannery heard how the nursery children had been fascinated and excited by the construction machinery they could see from the nursery window, so it took the opportunity to get in touch with Winvic and arrange a visit to the playground so the children aged two to four get handson. The youngsters eagerly donned hard hats and hi-visibility jackets to join in with a behind-the-scenes show where Flannery’s digger was the highlight of the day.

Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of multi-sector construction and civil engineering projects, along with national plant hire company, Flannery, has put on an exciting show in the playground of Footsteps Nursery inspiring a future generation of construction workers. The Minworth nursery is adjacent to IM Properties’ Peddimore site – where Winvic is delivering the civils and infrastructure work for the 71-hectare employment park – and the visit is part of Winvic and IM Properties’ proactive community engagement programme with local educational settings and schools.

Emma Rhymes, Winvic’s Social Value Manager, said: “These visits not only continue to strengthen Winvic’s relationship with the local communities in which we work but they are also a fun and engaging way to teach site safety. It also gives us the opportunity to showcase the wide range of career options available to young people within construction and engineering sectors, and while you may think nursery children are too young to be thinking about a job, we were surprised and delighted at how many inquisitive questions we received about the jobs we do. It was magical to see how excited the children were during the visit and we look forward to meeting more children who live close to the Peddimore site.”

DRAX CALLS FOR UK SUPPLY CHAIN TO DELIVER CLIMATE SAVING NEGATIVE EMISSIONS TECHNOLOGY Renewable energy giant Drax calls for UK businesses of all sizes to join the UK’s first BECCS supplier engagement programme.

The company will be hosting a series of nationwide events throughout 2022 in partnership with the West & North Yorkshire and Hull & Humber Chambers of Commerce, as well as further events across the wider North, Midlands and South of England. These will enable Drax to identify a robust supply chain for BECCS, ensuring the project can be accelerated as soon as planning approval is received.

Graham Backhouse, Drax’s Commercial Director for the BECCS project, said: “Negative emissions technologies like BECCS will play a vital role in enabling the UK to reach its net zero goals. At its peak, BECCS at Drax will protect and create over 10,000 jobs, levelling up the north, and positioning the UK as a global leader in this climate-saving technology. This programme of events is a fantastic opportunity for businesses of all sizes to get involved and learn more about the project, and we want to encourage a range of companies from across the country to take part.”

The event takes place ahead of a formal public consultation on Drax’s BECCS plans in November, when stakeholders including local communities will be able to learn more about the proposed project and provide their feedback.

TOLENT AWARDED £2.7M WARD IMPROVEMENT CONTRACT AT RVI HOSPITAL Two wards at Newcastle’s RVI Hospital are underway with key upgrade works within the site’s maternity and stroke units.

The £2.7m contract is being delivered by contractor Tolent, and will see Wards 41 and 42 undergo a series of refurbishment works to increase space and improve facilities for both patients and staff.

Ward 42 will become part of the hospital’s stroke unit, creating four additional six-bed bays, four single cubicles, an assessment suite, a new staff room and a patient rehabilitation gym to enhance patient experience.

Adding to the existing maternity unit, Ward 41, currently used as a stroke ward, will become integrated into the maternity wing, making better use of the

space available and the location of the ward.

The ward will also undergo a refurbishment in-line with Newcastle Hospitals new branding standards.

These standards are to be rolled out across all future refurbishments, to improve the ward environment and the overall patient experience.

Working closely with the Newcastle Hospitals Trusts estates team and designed by Newcastle-based P+HS Architects, the team are also looking to maximise the available space within the wing.

Current plans include a new care space within the maternity unit, to provide additional in-patient and out-patient care and support to mothers and babies who may require long periods of time in hospital.

UEA PARTNERS WITH VATTENFALL TO PUT EAST ANGLIA AT HEART OF GREEN JOBS REVOLUTION The University of East Anglia and Vattenfall have announced a partnership that will place the East of England at the forefront of the offshore wind industry and tackling climate change.

The work will span several areas of the University’s research and teaching programme. There will be a particular focus on building the workforce of the future and creating career opportunities linked to the offshore wind industry within the region, as well as furthering public and business engagement to achieve net zero.

The collaboration follows a successful pilot with students from the University securing paid placements within Vattenfall’s workforce to accelerate their learning and knowledge of working in industry.

Through skills programmes, collaboration on doctoral research programmes, and an expansion of the role of the UEA in the delivery of Vattenfall’s Norfolk Skills and Employment Strategy, a number of routes into the industry will be created to ensure that high paid, skilled opportunities come to the region.

Danielle Lane, UK Country Manager at Vattenfall said: “Vattenfall’s goal is to enable fossil-fuel free living within a generation. All of society should drive the journey and benefit from the move to net zero. So, we’re delighted to partner with the University of East Anglia – renowned globally for its climate science and innovation – to accelerate climate action in Norfolk and East Anglia.

“Offshore wind is an industry in which there is a role for everyone, regardless of their background, and there is a lot of interest from people thinking about what to do when they leave school, or who are considering

a career change. We also know there is a looming skills gap in the energy industry.

SNIPEF SECURES CSIC GRANT FUNDING TO WORK WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH AND ENERGY SAVING TRUST TO RESEARCH BARRIERS IN THE ‘GREEN’ SUPPLY CHAIN The Scotland and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation has once again demonstrated its commitment to innovation by securing valuable funding for research into the way the industry progresses towards a net zero society.

SNIPEF has accessed funding through the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre

(CSIC) and will act as lead partner, with The University of Edinburgh and Energy Saving Trust (EST).

The project, entitled Marketplace Demand and Pathways to Engagement for Net Zero Skills, will seek to identify the barriers and challenges that businesses are facing as they embark on the transition to low carbon methods of heating homes and other buildings.

The research will also further highlight the importance of the role that the plumbing and heating industry will have in the journey to net zero, since its operatives have the theoretical and practical skillsets to provide heat decarbonisation services.

Martyn Raine, Technical and Skills Manager at SNIPEF, said: “The research will look at pathways into what will become a new era for many in our sector and collate information about what plumbing, and heating professionals will need to do – and the support they will need – to make a transition to delivering net zero services for heat. SNIPEF Members will directly input into the research which will create outputs that will be of value to SNIPEF Members, helping them to navigate training routes.

Fiona Hodgson, Chief Executive of SNIPEF, said: “New skills will be at the heart of the green energy transformation as Scotland transitions to net zero carbon by 2045, with more than 50% of Scottish homes to be heated through renewable technology by 2030.

It is important that, as well as engaging constructively with government and the social housing sector, we can also interact with the private sector, which accounts for 59% of the housing stock in Scotland. There, we can use the information we glean to help build trust in the technology, look at incentivisation and allay concerns about cost.

The research will be concluded by Autumn 2021 and then a report will be issued which will provide the groundwork for further governmental interaction as well as valuable guidance for SNIPEF members.

HS2 UNVEILS THE ‘BEATING HEART OF HS2 IN LONDON’ AT ITS LONDON LOGISTICS HUB In building Britain’s new highspeed railway, HS2 is committed to protecting the environment and minimising our carbon footprint during design, construction and operation.

As a result, we are moving as much material as we can by rail as part of our Materials by Rail programme. The logistics hub at Willesden will be the beating heart of our London logistics operation and is a critical part of how we are building HS2.

HS2 has revealed the colossal logistics operation that is taking place at HS2’s logistics hub near Willesden Junction. The 30-acre site will be the beating heart of the logistics operation for HS2 in London, and will be where earth from the 26 miles of tunnel will be processed and critical construction materials, such as pre-cast tunnel segment rings, will be delivered. The hub has been constructed and will be operated by HS2’s Main Works Civils Contractor, Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture (SCS JV).

The construction of HS2’s London tunnels will require 5.6million tonnes of earth to be excavated. After being processed at the site near Willesden Junction, it will be taken by train to three locations across the UK – Barrington in Cambridgeshire, Cliffe in Kent, and Rugby in Warwickshire – where it will put to beneficial reuse, filling voids which will then be used as a basis for redevelopment, such as house building.

The site will also receive over 100,000 pre-cast tunnel segment

Project rings which will be used to form the walls of the London tunnels, delivered by rail from UK manufacturing sites. HS2’s contractor SCS JV has already confirmed that the first contract for pre-cast tunnel segment rings has been awarded to Pacadar UK, and will be delivered to the site from their factory in the Isle of Grain in Kent.

At peak operation, eight trains per day will depart and arrive at the logistics hub, maximising the use of rail freight in the construction of HS2 in London and resulting in one million lorry movements not going on UK roads.

Speaking at the opening of HS2’s Logistics Hub, HS2’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Thurston said: “In building

The operation is being coordinated from a refurbished building on the site. Sheffield based SME, 3Squared, has developed a bespoke rail logistics software solution to manage and track the railway materials movements in and out.

Speaking about the scale of the operation, Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture Managing Director, James Richardson, said: “The logistics hub is central to the London Tunnels programme. Collaborating with other partners delivering HS2, we will remove 5.6million tonnes of spoil by rail and bringing in our tunnel segments, taking one million lorry journeys off the road.

“We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and by using rail we will reduce our carbon emissions for logistics by 40%.”

Tim Jones, Managing Director of 3Squared, said: “It is fantastic to see the hard work and effort coming to fruition in this largescale logistics operation, which will radically improve efficiencies and operations across the wider UK transport network.

“Joining the HS2 project has marked an exciting chapter in 3Squared’s journey, and we look forward to continuing to work with SCS JV and providing our technological skill and expertise, as HS2 progresses.”

The London Logistics Hub sits on the old Freightliner Terminal site that first opened in 1967. It went on to become one of nine regional freight terminals developed specifically to handle Channel Tunnel intermodal traffic but eventually went into disuse in 2005. The site’s connections to the conventional railway make it an ideal location to coordinate HS2’s London logistics operation.

The logistics trains are currently operated

by GB Railfreight and the entire operation is the result of meticulous planning between HS2, Network Rail, SCS JV and HS2’s supply chain. The first train departed the site at the end of June, taking 1,470 tonnes of spoil to Barrington in Cambridgeshire.

At an event to open the logistics hub on Tuesday 14th September, a Class 66 locomotive was revealed, number 66796, which has been rebranded by GB Railfreight with a HS2 design. The HS2 locomotive was named ‘The Green Progressor’ by 15 year old HS2 enthusiast, Jermaine from Leeds.

RIA WELCOMES ANNIVERSARY OF CONSTRUCTION BEGINNING ON HS2, WITH 20,000 JOBS CREATED HS2 Ltd has marked one year since the formal start of construction of the line between Birmingham and London, with the scheme now supporting 20,000 jobs.

BACTERIA COULD HELP BUILD ECO-FRIENDLY CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS Researchers at the University of Bath are investigating whether the natural properties of bacteria could help in developing a new type of environmentally friendly plasterboard.

and Biochemistry and the Milner Centre for Evolution, is leading the project in collaboration with Professor Kevin Paine from the University’s Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

They are working with start-up company Adaptavate, which makes sustainable building materials. Their biodegradable plasterboard, Breathaboard uses compostable crop waste instead of gypsum, is lighter and has better thermal and acoustic insulation compared with traditional plasterboard.

She said: “Biofilms are formed when bacteria stick together to coat a surface, as opposed to growing neat dot-shaped clumps on a petri dish. This is a really exciting project that will see whether we can exploit the natural biofilm-forming abilities of bacteria to function as a kind of glue that will help improve the properties of biodegradable construction materials.”

Microbiologists from the University of Bath’s Department of Biology & Biochemistry, and concrete experts from the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering have been awarded funding by the National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC), for a six-month pilot project that aims to optimise the properties of the prototype plasterboard using their bacteria-based construction technology (BBCT).

If successful, the plasterboard can be scaled up and developed further.

Jeff Ive, Technical Director at Adaptavate, said: “Gypsum is the third most used construction material and accounts for 3% of UK carbon emissions.

It’s either mined or produced from waste from coal power stations and is becoming increasingly expensive to produce. As it’s calcium sulphate based, it also needs to be disposed of carefully so it doesn’t harm the environment. Our Breathaboard is a low carbon sustainable alternative to gypsum based plasterboard and could make a real difference to the carbon emissions of the construction industry. We’re delighted to be working with the University of Bath to further develop this product.”

Events & Awards News CABI WINS TOP AWARD FOR LOW ENERGY HEADQUARTERS Oxford based multidiscipline property and construction consultancy Ridge and Partners LLP (Ridge) was delighted to attend this year’s OxPropFest Awards, at which ‘Project of the Year’ was awarded to the stunning new headquarters of CABI. This unique development provided CABI with an exemplar, world class £9.5million building set in the Chilterns (AONB).

The ‘Project of the Year’ Award accepted

by Scott Brownrigg Architects at the ceremony, recognises Oxfordshire’s finest quality new buildings which are inspirational for both the users and the wider community and constructed to a high-level of finish and design.

Ridge was lead consultant, providing Project Management, Planning Consultancy, Cost Management and Quality Monitoring services.

CABI is a not-for-profit international organisation that improves people’s lives by addressing challenges in agriculture and the environment around the world, so it was vital that passive design principles were fully integrated with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

This high-profile, landmark development provides office space for 180 staff with low impact/low-carbon design principles, successfully integrated into a bio-diverse landscape, with a living roof, attracting insects and birds to enhance biodiversity.

It was essential for CABI’s goals to achieve the lowest environmental impacts for the 2-storey, 2,500m² HQ. The design was therefore driven with low environmental impact at the forefront.

Key considerations for the project were reducing the energy consumption, low running costs and minimal maintenance.

CABI HQ was delivered on time,

within budget and exceeded all quality expectations.

CABI was also highly commended for the Innovation and Sustainability category at the awards.

This was the fourth OxPropFest Awards ceremony held in Hangar 113 at Bicester Heritage with over 300 guests on 9th September.

Mark Richards, Equity Partner at Ridge said: “We are delighted to see our project for CABI honoured with this award. It is a fantastic achievement for the team which recognises the huge efforts made by all to navigate this important project through many challenges and achievements over the past ten years - including planning hurdles, the appointment of the full consultant team and managing the successful completion of the build.”

FEMALE SITE MANAGER IS FIRST IN COMPANY HISTORY TO WIN LEADING INDUSTRY AWARD A Bellway site manager has made history as the first woman within the company to win a prestigious construction industry award.

Jazele Parys (32) has broken new ground working at Eastside Quarter in Bexleyheath, after earning a Quality Award in the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) 2021 Pride in the Job award programme.

Working for Bellway Thames Gateway since 2014, Jazele has been the site manager at the development, off Broadway, since

construction work commenced in May 2018.

UK CONSTRUCTION JOB VACANCIES CONTINUE TO REACH NEW RECORD LEVELS Marco Verdonkschot, Managing Director at IronmongeryDirect, said: “As the number of jobs available in the UK climbs to over one million for the first time since records began, the amount of vacancies in the construction sector has also reached its highest ever level, with 37,000 listings between June and August.

“This is an increase of 2,000 from May to July, which, at the time, was another record for the industry, showing a definite trend.

Such high numbers of vacancies suggest that UK construction firms are feeling confident about their future and have sufficient work and finances to be able to increase their staff numbers.

“This is good news for unemployed construction workers, as the number of people out of work currently stands at 53,000. Hopefully they will be able to take advantage of the vacancies and get back into employment.

“They may consider turning self-employed, as the latest data suggests many workers in the sector are doing just that. There was a big jump between March and June, with 28,000 new self-employed construction workers, taking the UK total to 269,000, which is the highest in a year.

“This follows the general pattern in the industry, as the total number of employees in UK construction reached 518,000 in June, which is the highest since records began in 1978.

“There is some regional variation, however, as while some areas, like London (14%) and the West Midlands (6%) saw growth, others

THE SCAFFOLDING ASSOCIATION WELCOMES NEW SERVICE TO HELP BUSINESSES OFFER APPRENTICESHIPS A new government service has been launched to help businesses create more apprenticeship opportunities.

Large businesses can now pledge funds to smaller businesses through a new online service making it easier for large employers that pay the Apprenticeship Levy to spend their levy funds.

These employers had previously been able to transfer up to 25% of their annual levy pot to support other employers to take on apprentices. The new service will simplify the process for employers looking to transfer funds and businesses wanting to access funding.

The midwave cameras used by StructureCare operate in the spectral range between 2 and 5 µm, and, whilst the thermographic surveys can only be carried out during evenings or night-time, the sensitivity of this camera will allow for the full extent of defects to be identified from a simple camera scan of the surface in question.

Although it is important to note that a full understanding of the roofing structure is required, the latest offering from StructureCare does allow for identification of anomalies that would never have been seen previously.

LIVEWEST TO BUILD 7,000 AFFORDABLE HOMES IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS

TOPPING OFF CEREMONY AT HEARTLANDS HOSPITAL KEY MILESTONE FOR NEW AMBULATORY CARE AND DIAGNOSTICS (ACAD) CENTRE Kier recently hosted a topping out ceremony at Heartlands Hospital, to celebrate the completion of the main structure of new Ambulatory Care and Diagnostics (ACAD) Centre. Members of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) and the Heartlands Hospital Patient and Carer Council joined Kier, to celebrate this significant milestone.

We are pleased to progress the Ambulatory Care and Acute Diagnostics (ACAD) Building, as part of the P22 Construction Procurement Framework, supporting University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) to continue to deliver world class care to patients.

Procured through the Department for Health & Social Care’s P22 framework, the new £97.1m building will provide state-of-the-art facilities all under one roof, including outpatients, endoscopy, day case surgery and imaging, and will serve nearly half a million patients each year.

We are committed to leaving lasting legacies in the areas in which we work and as part of this project so far we have provided six virtual work experience placements, supported six young people to take part in traineeships on site and created four new jobs. We currently have two NVQ apprentices in construction management onsite and a student completing a Construction Management BSc (Hons) degree providing fantastic early careers opportunities.

It is one of the 20 NHS capital development projects to receive a share of the £850 million funding for new facilities announced by the Department of Health and Social Care in August 2019.

A leading housing association is set to build around 7,000 affordable homes over the next five years as part of a £2billion investment in the local economy during the next 10 years.

LiveWest delivered 701 affordable homes and 86 for open market across the South West during the last financial year despite construction being disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Over the next five years, LiveWest will develop around 2,400 affordable homes in Devon, 1,750 in Somerset, 1,400 in Cornwall and 1,400 in the West of England.

As the largest housing provider in the South West, LiveWest has more than 38,000 homes across the region with more than 80,000 customers.

LiveWest remain on course to develop 1,100 homes for rent and shared ownership and 106 for outright sale during the current financial year.

LiveWest’s Chief Executive Paul Crawford said: “As we reflect on a year which has brought unprecedented challenges for our organisation, customers and the wider economy, we can be truly proud of how dynamic and resourceful we have been in responding positively to the rapidly changing environment.

“That said, we have had another year of strong progress and remain in good shape to continue our plans to build desperately needed affordable homes across the South West.

“Our financial figures provide the springboard for us to continue with our ambitious growth strategy where the focus of our development programme is very much on providing homes that people can afford to live in.

‘BEATING HEART OF HS2 IN LONDON’ UNVEILED AT LOGISTICS HUB Our Skanska Costain STRABAG JV, working for HS2, has unveiled the 30-acre logistics hub where London tunnels’ waste will be processed.

The hub is located near Willesden Junction and will form the beating heart of the logistics operation for HS2 in London. It has been constructed and will be operated by the Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture, HS2’s main works civils contractor.

Construction of HS2’s 26 miles of London tunnels will require 5.6million tonnes of earth to be excavated. After being processed at the hub, it will be taken by train to three locations across the UK – Barrington in Cambridgeshire, Cliffe in Kent, and Rugby in Warwickshire – where it will be reused, filling voids which will then be used as a basis for redevelopment, such as house building.

The site will also receive more than 100,000 pre-cast tunnel segment rings to build the walls of the London tunnels, delivered by rail from UK manufacturing sites. Our SCS JV has already confirmed that the first contract for pre-cast tunnel segment rings has been awarded to Pacadar UK, and will be delivered to the site from their factory on the Isle of Grain in Kent.

James Richardson, Managing Director of Skanska Costain STRABAG JV, said: “The logistics hub is central to the London Tunnels programme. Collaborating with other partners delivering HS2, we will remove 5.6million tonnes of spoil by rail and bringing in our tunnel segments, taking one million lorry journeys off the road.

“We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and by using rail we will reduce our carbon emissions for logistics by 40 per cent.”

Speaking at the opening of the logistics hub, Mark Thurston, HS2 Chief Executive Officer, said: “In building Britain’s new high-speed railway, HS2 is committed to protecting the environment and minimising our carbon footprint during design, construction and operation. As a result, we are moving as much material as we can by rail as part of our Materials by Rail programme.

“The logistics hub at Willesden will be the beating heart of our London logistics operation and is a critical part of how we are building HS2.”

The site’s connections to the conventional railway make it an ideal location to coordinate HS2’s London logistics operation.

In building Britain’s new high-speed railway, HS2 is committed to protecting the environment and minimising our carbon footprint during design, construction and operation.

FIRST STAGE OF TRAIL BLAZING LEEDS COHOUSING SCHEME NEARS COMPLETION The first part of an innovative combined project to build 63 new affordable homes close to Leeds city centre is due to be completed later this year.

Half of the properties will form a brand new cohousing community, one of around just 20 in the country.

ChaCo’s element of the scheme comprising 29 houses and flats, a ‘common house’ and space for three self build units – is expected to be ready in March 2022.

Homes England provided £1.4million in grant support to the project with the Housing Infrastructure Fund allocating £1.34million

Despite some delays associated with the pandemic, Unity is on course to complete 30 one and two bed flats for people aged 55 and over by November.

The remaining finance was secured by a combination of private finance and savings from ChaCo stakeholders who will live in the cohousing properties upon completion.

PLANS UNDERWAY FOR A NEW REIMAGINED STRAND ALDWYCH Westminster City Council has ambitious plans for Strand Aldwych, which will see this ancient route adapted to become a pedestrian-focused destination, transforming this historic gateway to the West End into a world-class and contemporary traffic-free public space.

The proposal converts busy roadways into a major new public space at the Strand, to become traffic free in front of Somerset House and King’s College London, and an enhanced pedestrian experience across the Aldwych, including new crossings, wider footways and a new green space.

Cedric Boston, Unity Interim Chief Executive, said: “The concept behind this scheme is to connect residents to the community even when they are inside their home by having the ability to look out to the shared space, keep in touch with the everyday lives of friends and neighbours and come out to join them. From Unity’s point of view, it is part of a bigger picture to provide high quality accommodation for older people, supporting them moving out of large family properties and backfilling these with families who urgently need that form of housing.

The new Strand Aldwych project aims to bring the inside out – by combining the best of Westminster’s arts, culture, learning and business, utilising the wealth of cultural and creative organisations based in the surrounding areas to reveal the joys of Strand Aldwych as a unique place to visit.

It will create a new public space for London, car-free, centred around the majestic St Mary le Strand Church, which will stand pride of place in its newly created architectural and historic setting.

The reinvention of Strand Aldwych as a world-leading, fit for the future, urban green space is the latest step in the council’s ambitious plans for the West End and its vision for a greener, smarter city.

This project is being delivered by Westminster City Council along with key partners including Northbank Business Improvement District, King’s College London, Somerset House Trust, St Mary Le Strand, The Courtauld and Society of London Theatre.

Public realm improvements in the Strand Aldwych area started on 4 January 2021 and are due to be completed in late 2022.

WE SPEAK WITH PETER CAPE, BIG BREW LEAD AT BAND OF BUILDERS TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THEIR LATEST CAMPAIGN ‘BIG BREW’ WHICH AIMS TO HELP TACKLE MENTAL HEALTH IN CONSTRUCTION Firstly, how important in your opinion is it to raise awareness about mental health especially in industries such as construction?

This is potentially such a complex question to answer, however I tend to cut it down to two main arguments, ethical and the business.

Ethically, it is the right thing to do. Up to two construction industry workers die as a result of suicide every day - and this is the tip of the iceberg.

Countless others are suffering with issues such as stress, anxiety and depression etc. Construction sector workers are over than three times more likely to suffer from mental health issues than their counterparts in other industries, which clearly indicates that it is something the industry itself must address and support change.

Business wise, billions of pounds have gone into health and safety, it is closely regulated, risk assessed and highly funded yet (according to HSE) 55% of all days lost in construction are due to mental health issues. This amounts to 400,000 days a year at an estimated cost to the economy of £37bn every year. With forethought and a relatively small investment, this gaping hole in the industries finances could be plugged What is the ‘Big Brew’ campaign and what are the aims?

A Big Brew provides an opportunity for tradespeople to come together over a cuppa. The aims of which are: to support conversation, connection and relationship.

To make discussing issues around mental health commonplace and comfortable. To raise awareness of mental health issues.

To improve awareness of, and access to, available support services. It’s also a great opportunity to not only raise awareness but to raise some funds to add to our ability to provide support services.

Interview Our primary aim is to raise awareness to provoke and support change. It’s time to do something different and change the stigma and secrecy around mental health.

Is this the first national campaign that has been carried out by Band of Builders? If so, how important is it to reach as many people as possible and to raise awareness?

Yes, this is the first national campaign Band of Builders has undertaken with a focus on mental health. Our primary aim is to raise awareness to provoke and support change. It’s time to do something different and change the stigma and secrecy around mental health.

Have you seen a rise in mental health in the construction industry over the last year? Do you believe Covid has been a contribution to this?

According to the most recent research there has been a reduction in mental health issues in senior management over the past couple of years, however the same cannot be said of the boots on the ground, the self-employed, small businesses and supply chain businesses, where a huge increase has been seen pushing the numbers higher than ever.

It would be impossible to say COVID had not played a role as it has impacted everything, however it would also be unreasonable to blame COVID as the upward trend for poor mental health has been well established for years.

What drives you to help make a difference to so many people?

I have worked in the construction sector for many years and I don’t know anyone in the industry who, when asked directly, doesn’t admit to having suffered from some sort of mental health issue. From low level stress to suicidal thoughts and everything in-between. We have all experienced it in some form. I am definitely someone who has suffered with my own demons, and I have learned a lot through the process, sometimes the simplest things can make the biggest difference and change always starts with a conversation.

look after yourself doesn’t feel like an option especially if you feel it might impact on the next job. This must change. According to all the research, increasing awareness and making small changes can have a huge impact on the individuals mental health and the industry as a whole.

What support does the charity offer and how can people get in touch?

Band of Builders is not a mental health charity and, as such, we do not directly offer any services. However, through the fundraising on the Big Brew we will be supporting those who are experts in the field, charities like The Lighthouse Club which runs The Construction Industry Helpline. We will be supporting MHFA and hope to fund 300 mental health awareness course places in year one, we also plan to support the provision of interim counselling services to support members of the UK construction industry where GP counselling is not available or has a long waiting list.

There are two main ways to get involved: you can register to host a big brew event on our website and we will provide you with all the support and information you need to make it a success. Or, you can find out where your nearest big brew event is happening and go along to support the campaign.

If you’re not in a position to do either of these, simply sharing the social media posts or links to get involved will increase awareness and may well encourage someone to get the support they need.

Sometimes there can be such a stigma around mental health in certain industries, how important is I to encourage people to speak out and get the help they need?

The industry is built on guys who “get it done” - strong guys who work hard. It’s also built on uncertainty, unstable contracts, piece work, unreliable payments, unreliable working conditions, it’s built on guys living hand to mouth or job to job. Admitting any sort of weakness or taking a day to

Substances such as silt, fuels, cement, adhesives, solvents and paints are only a small number of examples of the types of chemicals and materials that can enter our water systems, disrupt aquatic life and, in some cases, end up in our drinking water or food. This is a phenomenon that can be amplified by rainfall, which has the effect of mobilising these substances and dispersing them into surrounding areas.

These substances can enter the water system through several channels, such as collection through drainage systems, seeping into soil or running directly into lakes and rivers. However, though this is a well-known phenomenon, there are, as of yet, no standardised frameworks to minimise this type of pollution.

RAIMONDI FLATTOP TOWER CRANES PUT TO WORK FOR QATARI MEGA PROJECT Raimondi Middle East deployed 10 topless tower cranes for the construction of one of Qatar’s most awaited residential developments: The Seef.

“Currently, we have nine Raimondi cranes operating onsite, as one MRT159 was dismantled in June,” said Wael Hasan, Commercial Director, Raimondi Middle East.

“Five cranes, one MRT294, one MRT223, one MRT189, and two MRT144s, originally sold to UCC fleet, have now been resold to the contractor of this project: Urban Trading and Contracting WLL. The additional four new MRT159s were sold and installed directly

by Raimondi Middle East in January 2020,” Hasan explained

Considering the differences of tower cranes at work, as well as the size and layout of the jobsite, one of the key aspects was a careful study of the positioning of each crane to avoid jib clashing, and to ensure the highest level of site safety and productivity. To accomplish these aims, Raimondi’s technical team, together with the UCC project team, engineers, and plant department, conducted a workshop prior to commencing work.

The MRT159s onsite have jibs ranging between 38m and 60m and eights under the hook (HUH) raging from 74m to 125m, while the two MRT144s positioned in different jobsite areas have 61m jib configurations and 43m HUH. “Another significant point we took into account was the fast-tracked nature of the project as the contractor was looking to install the cranes in a short timeframe to accelerate operations.

The MRT159, MRT189, and MRT223 were chosen for the models’ characteristics of arriving onsite with all parts preassembled, and embedded elements to facilitate the erection stage,” said Hasan, detailing that the Raimondi Operations department deployed four manpower groups to accelerate the process.

The Raimondi MRT294, with a jib length of 70m and a HUH of 133m, was chosen for its maximum lifting capacity of 16t, and its strong performance in a variety of climate conditions. The MRT294 is also the tallest crane currently at work on The Seef jobsite. “Raimondi Cranes is supporting the jobsite with ongoing service and monthly maintenance to ensure smooth operations and successful project completion.”

The nine cranes will be dismantled in the upcoming months as the project’s completion is expected to be by the end of the year. Situated at the heart of Lusail City waterfront and in the proximity of several landmarks, the project is destinated to become one the most popular outdoor destinations.

GODWIN DEVELOPMENTS SUBMITS OUTLINE PLANS FOR NEW HOMES IN SHEPSHED National residential and commercial developer Godwin Developments today announces that it has submitted outline plans for the creation of up to 50 new family homes on land south of Ashby Road Central, in the Leicestershire town of Shepshed.

The proposed scheme, which will be a mixture of house types, is situated on a vacant site next to the established

REFURBISHED UNIVERSITY HALLS OPEN DOORS Students are moving into upgraded halls of residence for the first time after a £12m refurbishment by Brymor Construction.

The major revamp of the University of Southampton’s Montefiore blocks in Wessex Lane was finished in time for the start of the new term this autumn.

Hampshire-based Brymor – a £85m turnover firm with more than 150 staff – carried out a complete overhaul of the ageing but structurally sound buildings, which date back to the 1960s.

Stephen Morton, Chairman of Brymor, said: “There is always a tremendous sense of achievement in seeing buildings come back into use following major refurbishment.

“This was a substantial project aimed at breathing new life into ageing accommodation blocks to ensure they meet the high standards set by the university and demanded by students today.

There were a number of different elements which required careful planning and management while ensuring the refurbishment remained on course despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.

The project was Brymor’s largest for a halls of residence in terms of value and the extent of works although it has previously worked on student blocks with more rooms.

It included refurbishment of all rooms and communal spaces in Montefiore Blocks A and B, along with upgraded and new kitchens for a total of 260 students at the halls.

Other elements included furnishing, reconfiguration of communal washrooms into self-contained shower pods and refurbishment of mechanical and electrical services as well as windows replacement.

External works involved landscaping, paving, footpaths, signage and lighting.

Trudi Vout, Director of Residential Services at the University of Southampton, said: “The university is committed to creating the best living experience for its students and the completion of the refurbished halls in another milestone in our ambitious programme.”

WeMaintain began in 2017 with a simple observation: for years, the treatment of building managers and engineers have been kept to a minimum standard. While elevator products have benefited from technological innovations, the level and quality of solutions in the maintenance business has not improved. We noticed that the time was right for a new business model, one that combined improved technical proficiency with the development of digital tools. We also believed that the technology that supports the critical systems of a building could be more intuitive, more interactive with

other building systems and make the maintenance process more seamless and more transparent. These elements would be critical in the advent of the smart city era.

I was studying in China and saw the pace of proptech innovation there and I felt there was an opportunity to deploy technology, optimise user experience and accelerate the advent of smart buildings.

What inspired you to set up a company within this sector?

I was studying in China and saw the pace of proptech innovation there and I felt there was an opportunity to deploy technology, optimise user experience and accelerate the advent of smart buildings.

Interview Looking also at the growth of cities around the world, I felt there was an opportunity to develop and implement a technology that improves and augments the human experience in the built environment, thereby improving living conditions and spaces. While I was there, I also noticed how little diversity there was within this sector. The industry has been dominated by four main players since the start and I felt there was room for innovation. Innovation comes from diversity; in genders, backgrounds, interests, experiences and ages, and that’s a big part of what this industry was missing.

Who do your engineers have to work closely alongside to ensure that the best system suits the needs of a building?

The company recently won the maintenance contract with KeolisAmey Docklands, for London DLR lift and escalator maintenance, how does it feel to win these contracts?

Talk us through one of the most challenging projects the company have worked on so far

It felt fantastic and it’s an honour to work with KeolisAmey Docklands and support a critical part of London’s transport network, and an iconic symbol of the dockland’s regeneration. At its height prior to lockdown, the DLR accommodated 122.3 million passenger journeys, and we are looking forward to deploying our technology to accommodate similar passenger flows as we come to terms with the Covid crisis.

Our engineers use our smart technology to manage their workload and benefit from performance related pay. They work alongside property and asset managers, procurement teams, and consultants to bring about highly transparent and effective maintenance solutions. Consequently, we reduce the breakdown rate by three which means the customer conversation becomes productive: about how we can add value to the building and build customer experience.

KeolisAmeyDocklands is immensely rewarding and an honour to work on. It was also important to show that we could scale up, and supplying our technology solutions to the elevators and escalators on an iconic transport network was a great way of doing that.

What motivates you?

The opportunity to challenge the status quo through innovation. I want to use the tech to empower people on the ground. I think it is the only way to realise smart cities.

Construction and property is an exciting sector to innovate in. One of my favourite sayings is. ‘Imagine what you could achieve if you were not afraid.’ I am always looking towards the next challenge, the next horizon, and I will never stop thinking about the new solutions we can bring to the building and construction industry.

What are the plans for the company for the future?

We have just opened a new office in Singapore, which has one of the most sophisticated built environments in the world and have already struck a deal with Singapore public procurement platforms.

Looking further ahead, we want to expand globally, particularly into the United States.

We also want to invest in IoT research and development and create solutions for all regulated building operations and become the leading global player in the smart building sector.

Platform Housing Group has welcomed Neelam Heera, Kaeden Bunting, Remi Turton and Edd Hall to a new scheme which has been designed to increase diversity in housing Boards of the future.

In partnership with The Chartered Institute of Housing, Platform Housing Group launched the 2 year development programme earlier this year in order to offer Board experience to those individuals who may find it a challenge to gain such opportunities. In the long term, it is hoped that the new Trainee Board members will go on to become full Board members either at Platform or elsewhere within the housing sector.

Neelam is a 32 year old project manager from Huddersfield; Edd, a 35 year old maintenance supervisor from Telford; Remi, a 32 year old project manager from London and Kaeden, an 18 year old project management apprentice from Birmingham.

STORMCRATE55 PROVIDES28/09/2021 ROOM12:05:24 FOR WATER AT NORTHWICH BUSINESS PARK Brett Martin has provided its new StormCrate55 modular crates for an underground attenuation tank designed to control stormwater and address surface water run-off as part of the redevelopment of a business park in Cheshire.

Located in Wincham near Northwich, the Blue Group site at the New Cheshire Business Park features offices, a workshop and space for up to 20 waste handling machines. In order to manage surface water on the site during periods of heavy rainfall, Engineering Services, working on behalf of Blue Group, collaborated with Brett Martin on a design which incorporated the StormCrate55 system – an engineered Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS), to create a 325m³ storage tank below a parking area.

Due to space limitations and drainage layouts on site, Engineering Services found the dimensions of the StormCrate55 perfect for this project. With each crate capable of storing up to 237.5 litres of water, Brett Martin’s technical experts were able to offer technical guidance for the design of an attenuation tank and underground storm drainage pipe layout to suit both the site landscaping and tank storage requirements and allow stormwater to be managed on an area where staff cars and light goods vehicles are to be parked.

As each crate weighs only 15.5kg they were easy to lift by hand and simple to connect together using connectors and shear pins in a brick bond pattern and at three layers deep in parts.

THE CLOUD…COVERED! Lightweight composite access covers designed for cloud and data centres speedup access to underground infrastructure and fibreoptic cabling.

Data centres and cloud storage facilities are growing exponentially YOY, with global storage expansion estimated at 36% CAGR 2016-2021 (from 286 exabytes to 1.3 zettabytes). Locally, the UK 3rd party cloud market is the largest in Europe. This growth is driven in part by the movement towards on-demand services.

These facilities are highly specialised environments with exacting performance requirements. They are typically constructed to a tight build schedule.

However, no two are the same. Each facility has specific needs.

Unlike many other construction projects, cloud and data centres evolve quickly, once built. Servers are frequently replaced, and facilities often grow to accommodate greater storage capacity and new technologies. The internal design therefore must have flexibility for this.

To meet these new challenges, a number of designers and construction companies are turning to contemporary materials like the GRP composite channel access covers made by Fibrelite, which offer many unique benefits.

Unique Construction Challenges of Cloud and Data Centres Internal design is key to data centre construction as it supports the extensive infrastructure, servers and cabling required whilst enabling fast maintenance, (concurrent in the case of Tier 3 and 4) and scalability. Infrastructure normally includes UPS, power distribution, cooling systems, fire systems and security systems, many of which have redundancies (up to 2N+1 for Tier 4 facilities).

As the use of cloud and data centres has increased, their requirements have evolved significantly. In recent years, this has led to an increasing need for efficiency, reliability and reduced downtime risk, which has seen an increasing focus on value over cost.

Perceived rate of obsolescence is also an important consideration, and wherever possible, facilities must be adequately future-proofed. The designers and construction companies building today’s facilities are tackling this challenge by adopting agile designs, using modern, expandable materials, and following a modular approach.

Composite Access Covers Simplify Construction and Maintenance

One contemporary product being adopted to increase the efficiency of cloud and data centre construction and maintenance is bespoke modular GRP composite infrastructure/cable trench access covers.

These are made by Fibrelite and to date, have been adopted by facilities throughout Europe, Asia and America, and specified by some of the world’s largest brands. For the last 40 years, Fibrelite’s lightweight

composite manhole covers have also been specified by many leading oil companies around the globe for use on their petrol stations. Locally, this includes BP, Esso, Total, and many more. In fact, Fibrelite created the world’s first composite manhole cover, back in 1980. If you have a car, you will have walked over a Fibrelite cover many times when refuelling.

The designers and construction companies building today’s facilities are adopting Fibrelite trench/channel access covers to cover and provide access to channels housing underground infrastructure and fibreoptic cabling. Traditionally, these covers were made from concrete or metal.

However, Fibrelite’s innovative modular GRP covers are far lighter and allow safe fast manual removal, even when heavier load ratings are required (e.g. channels running between buildings with vehicle traffic). Fibrelite covers are available in load ratings up to F900/90 tonnes, are impervious to corrosion and have a unique anti-skid walking surface.

In many instances where these covers are adopted, companies choose to specify a bespoke option, custom-manufactured to the exact size, colour, load rating and fittings (e.g. securing systems) sometimes as a retrofit replacement for previously installed concrete or metal covers.

In environments like data centres and cloud facilities where efficiency and flexibility are vital, it’s important to simplify every process possible. We’re impressed at how the level to which data centres are adopting our composite covers for just such a purpose.

SCHÖCK AND CHC COLLABORATE ON ENVIRONMENTALLY IMPROVED DEBRIS SCREENS An innovative Bury based civil engineering and building contracting firm, Cheetham Hill Construction (CHC), are collaborating with Schöck to improve the environmental performance of culvert debris screens.

Traditionally these would be steel reinforced constructions, but the versatile Combar glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) product from Schöck is a welcome alternative. This is a ribbed reinforcing bar made of corrosion resistant glass fibres, bound by a vinyl ester resin.

The high quality components and the unique manufacturing process result in an outstanding material which is highly durable, corrosion resistant and much stronger than steel, but significantly lighter.

First debris screen for Combar Combar has been used for the first time in the construction of the debris screen structure at Torkington Park, in Hazel Grove, a suburb of Stockport. The brook that flows through the park is culverted under a road from the downstream end. Heavy rain in the past had caused the debris screen located at the culvert inlet to became blocked, causing a local flood event. As a result the Environment Agency (EA) took the decision to rebuild and upgrade the downstream debris screen to reduce the risk of future flooding. CHC hold a place on the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coastal Risk Management Operational Framework (FCRM), created to deliver design, civil engineering, culvert clearance and maintenance works in the river, coastal and estuary environments. The company was also successful in its application for funding from the Environment Agency Net Zero Carbon Innovation Pathway Fund (2021/22)

– and it is this that led to the collaboration with Schöck.

Ticking the boxes CHC Site Manager, Lee Farrar takes up the story: “Using the Schöck Combar product ticked quite a few boxes. Being a GFRP reinforcement, it offers a reduction of up to 80% of embodied carbon when compared to traditional steel reinforcement. Other benefits are that it is significantly lighter than steel, so the health and safety benefits involving manual handling are significant. The GFRP reinforcement doesn’t rust either. So the finished structures are more durable and require less maintenance, while still achieving an expected design life of 100 years. The Torkington Park debris screen reduces the risk of flooding to the surrounding houses and its design results in less visits being necessary by the EA to clean out the screen debris. We are looking to incorporate Combar more widely in future designs and anticipate using the product again very soon”.

10 QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT LIFT SPECIFICATION So you’ve decided that your project needs a people moving lift. But which type do you need? To help you choose the right lift specification, we’ve come up with some questions to consider.

Traffic analysis is essential. After this, consideration should be given to the practical building requirements and the profile of the lift users. To help you identify the type of vertical passenger-carrying lift you require for your lift specification, here are several questions to work through.

1. Number of people?

Your traffic analysis will govern all decisions on the number of lift(s) you require. Different products can carry vastly different numbers of passengers. For example, platform lifts can hold anything from 1 to 5 people (or a wheelchair user and one attendant). In contrast, passenger lifts can vary from low to high travel, small lifts for 4 or 6 people, or up to larger lifts built to transport people, shopping trolleys etc.

2. Who will be using your lift?

The types of people who use the building, and therefore your lift, are pertinent in the product choice. The features it may have and the options you need to include in your specification can be dictated by it.

For example, suppose you are placing a platform lift in a nursing home or a place where elderly persons will use the lift independently. In that case, automatic buttons (instead of constant pressure or ‘hold to run’) will make the lift operation much easier.

3. New or existing building?

When considering a lift, you must first consider the age and design of your building.

New buildings can easily accommodate a lift shaft. However, older buildings can sometimes have a minimal capacity for major changes, such as creating a shaft, due to the required loadings or available space.

4. What type of building are you placing the lift into?

You also may need to consider the life cycle of your building. A lifespan of a lift is at least 10 years or more. Therefore, you will need to know if the building use will change in that time or not.

5. How much space do you have in your building?

Analysing how much space you have available will allow you to assess if you can fit lifts of specific lift dimensions, sizes and capacity.

6. Number of floors or steps?

Determining the number of floors or steps that the lift(s) will be required to travel between. Most platform lifts go up to 12m, whereas passenger lifts can travel up to 40m or more.

7. How much headroom and pit depth are available?

Passenger lifts typically require greater pit depth and headroom than a platform lift, but they enable more frequent usage, faster speeds and higher travels. If there are any limitations, it’s essential to check what’s possible with a lift company.

8. Do you have an existing lift shaft? Can you build one? Is there another option if you can’t build a lift shaft?

If you have an existing lift shaft or can build one, it is best to ensure that it fits your preferred product choice’s headroom and pit requirements. A site survey is often required for existing shafts or replacement lifts to recommend the most suitable option.

9. Aesthetics?

The finish of the lift comes down to the look and feel you are trying to create, whether you want the lift to be in keeping with the building’s aesthetic and, of course, how much you want to spend!

10. Does the lift need to comply with particular regulations, standards and building requirements?

There are a whole host of standards and regulations surrounding lifts, including vandal resistance, fire-fighting (EN81-72) and emergency fire evacuation (BS999), to name a few. If you need to adhere to a particular standard, it is worth mentioning this from the outset.

MODULAR CONSTRUCTION METHODS CREATE HIGH PROFILE SPACE Modular building specialists Enviro Building Solutions have completed an exciting project for South Gloucestershire Council located on the high profile Bristol and Bath Science Park. Worth £2.3M, this high specification, three-storey modular office development includes a total of 27 modular bays, with one elevation using structural glazing and featuring an external terrace.

Bristol and Bath Science Park provides a world class environment first developed to attract technology firms to the South West. The new building has been designed to represent the very best in modular construction, with the focus on sustainability, visual aesthetics and practical performance.

The most striking element of the build is the front elevation which is almost fully glazed, requiring the incorporation of structural glazing to maintain the required integrity and support.

This feature is enhanced by the use of terracing and overhangs, creating a visually compelling look and finish complemented by glass and PPC balustrading.

The elegant lines of the structure are enhanced by the use of specialist cladding which adds to the streamlined finish by utilising large format panels, creating an exceptionally flat façade and recessed joints. Added benefits include a high degree of resistance to impact and thermal bow.

Enviro Building Solutions were also responsible for all M&E works including service connections to the existing Forum Building on the Science Park, fire detection/intruder alarm installations and automated door access facilities. In addition, BMS (Building Management) and CCTV systems have been installed which link to existing site-wide systems.

External works completed by the Enviro team included guarding, banking around the perimeter of the new building, creation of a ramped fire escape route, refuse storage and provision of cycle parking spaces as well as hard landscaping including block paving, concrete planters and benching.

The finished building has achieved an EPC ‘A’ rating, with the U-values significantly exceeding building performance regulations.

With the focus on sustainability, the design incorporates photovoltaic panels installed on the roof, cleverly concealed within a parapet system corresponding with the main façade of the building.

GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW BUSINESS HUB IN EYE Today, plans to refurbish 6 Cross Street, which has stood empty for over a decade, have been approved by Mid Suffolk District Council.

The transformation of the building will include significant environmental enhancements to meet the Council’s carbon reduction aims – such as using renewable energy to heat the building, and the inclusion of electric car and bike charging points, powered by on-site photovoltaic canopies.

Once completed, the building will provide new offices for Eye Town Council as well as accessible workspaces and a support hub for start-up businesses in the heart of the town.

The building, next door to the new library in Cross Street, was transferred to Mid Suffolk District Council from Suffolk County Council earlier this summer, and the plans to develop the space are part of the wider ‘Invest in Eye’ programme and the Eye Neighbourhood Plan, providing a boost for local business and growing town centre footfall.

Proposals went before Mid Suffolk’s development control committee today, following input from the community and statutory consultees, including Suffolk Highways, and councillors voted by 7 to 1 in favour of granting planning permission, subject to conditions. The Council recognised the challenges around car parking, and these will be considered as part of Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils future parking strategy.

The project will cost £330,000, with £195,000 coming from Mid Suffolk District Council, £90,000 of dedicated funding for low carbon projects and £45,000 from the Suffolk Growth Partnership.

Cllr Peter Gould, Mid Suffolk District Council cabinet member for assets and investments, said: “I am pleased that we have received the green light to transform this derelict building in the heart of Eye into a flexible space for businesses to grow and innovate. In addition, the ground floor will provide a modern working space for Eye Town Council within easy reach of local residents.”

NORWICH CITY CENTRE DEVELOPMENT MOVES INTO ITS FINAL PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION Broadland Housing and R G Carter have celebrated reaching the fourth phase of Canary Quay, a new modern housing development on the River Wensum in Norwich city centre.

Construction of 101, one-and-twobedroom apartments has already started on site and represents the final stage of the Canary Quay regeneration project in which a total of more than 300 affordable and privately-owned homes are being created, offering modern living space in a desirable riverside location.

Michael Newey, Group Chief Executive of Broadland Housing, said: “One of our priorities is to provide much needed affordable

homes for the people living in the city. This development is part of the solution.”

Andrew Savage, Executive Development Director, Broadland Housing added: “We are delighted to progress to phase 4 of this important development. Our strong partnership with Carters showcases what can be achieved together”.

The final phase is expected to be completed in 2022 and will sit alongside 222 apartments completed in Phases One, Two and Three of the scheme’s construction officially named Patricia Hollis House, Richard Hawthorn House, Solace, Olive, Norada and White Moth.

FVB SUPPORTING MAJOR INVESTMENT IN DISTRICT HEATING SYSTEM Barkarbystaden is the largest expansion area of the city of Stockholm. A former airport was converted into a modern district here. FVB is responsible for all district heating design. The work also includes moving the current transit line.

Barkarbystaden is in Järfälla Municipality, northwest of Stockholm, and the expansion of the new district has been ongoing here for a few years now. A total of 18,000 new homes, 140 neighborhoods, and 10,000 new workplaces are planned here by 2030.

The majority of the properties will have district heating.

“On behalf of E.ON Värme, we are designing all district heating in the area. This involves both main lines and service lines. In total, this will be about 3.5 km of lines with a heat output requirement of 36 MW,” says Oskar Österberg, consultant at FVB. The area was previously a military and regional airport, but it was shut down in 2010 after nearly 100 years of aviation operations. Therefore, there was hardly

any existing infrastructure at the site, except for a transit line for district heating. As an entirely new district is now being built, there are many lines and large pipes that will share space in the ground – district heating, water and sewage, power lines, fiber networks, and garbage collection. At the same time, ground reinforcements need to be made in the area.

“It’s so crowded in the ground that finding space for all the infrastructure is a challenge.

We have to carefully plan how and where to supply the pipes to the various neighborhoods. We will also need to move the transit line for district heating,” says Oskar Österberg.

The transit line is connected to Stockholm Exergi’s network and to E.ON’s new CHP plant at Högbytorp. The reason it needs to be moved is that properties will be built on the site where the current transit line is located.

“It’s unusual that you need to move transit lines. When we do it in Barkarbystaden,

many people will be affected because the line is connected to the district heating network in Stockholm,” says Oskar Österberg.

“The interruption, that is to say the time when the line can be out of operation, can be a maximum of two weeks and needs to be done in consultation with both new developments and those who have agreements for district heating supply,” says Oskar Österberg.

The new parts of the transit line will take about 10 months to build, so when the actual switchover is to happen, everything needs to be prepared in order to meet the schedule.

A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO SOLVING FLOOD RISKS WITH HYDROPLANTER Cwmbach, is a village near Aberdare in the county of Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales, has the meaning “Little Valley” in Welsh (Cwm = valley, Bach = little). With an approximate population of 5,000, the area is mostly known for its substantial coal mining industry, Known for its steep topography and higher elevations to the East, the Afon Cynon river borders the West draining to the Aberdare canal – which is the main river that runs through Cwmbach, discharging just south of the train station.

With this in mind a detailed Flood Risk Management plan was set out by Rhondda Cynon Taf C.B.C in November 2015, highlighting all areas with low to medium to high risk.

HydroPlanter is modular and can be extended to suit specific needs.

Notable high flood risk was at the conjunction of Cwymbach Road and Canal Road with concerns to properties adjacent to the highway at flood risk.

UK CONSTRUCTION WEEK SHOW PREVIEW Record-breaking registrations bode well for return of construction’s biggest live event The rate of registrations for UK Construction Week (UKCW), the first major construction event in two years, has got off to a recordbreaking start, running at 22% higher than for the same period in 2019.

Demand for face-to-face events and networking appears to be returning fast.

Since publication of the Government’s new guidance on the safe return of major events, organisers have confirmed that UKCW will return to the NEC in Birmingham on 5-7 October 2021. This event is free to attend.

UKCW 2021 is expected to attract more than 20,000 specifiers and buyers with at least 300 exhibitors providing launches, demos and offers on more than 6,000 products.

Indeed, 80% of the exhibition space for October’s show is already booked. While some companies have waited for restriction to ease, many rapidly took the opportunity to ramp up their marketing plans.

Major brands such as Google, HS2, Geberit, Hanson Plywood, Ford, Xero, Procore and the Construction Innovation Hub will be promoting heavily at the event, making up for two years of new product launches, innovation and recruitment.

FIRE DOOR SAFETY – TIME TO BRIDGE THE GAP Fire safety doesn’t happen by accident, it requires universal attention. With that, Karen Trigg of Allegion UK explores why the importance of working fire doors is often overlooked and why now is an opportune time to bridge the gap between fire safety education and action.

Improving fire safety within UK buildings is a challenge we are all continuously facing.

Irrelevant of sector, it’s of the highest importance for any building type - from schools and hospitals to high-rise residential and industrial facilities. Because when it comes to fire, there are no exemptions.

Most of us are only made aware of the danger of fire from headline disasters and yet, in the year ending March 2021, fire response teams attended 151,086 fires in the UK, of which the average total response time to primary fires in England was 8 minutes and 35 seconds.

Fire doors play a fundamental role in these scenarios and are rigorously constructed and tested to British Standards BS 476: Part 22 or BS EN 1634-1 to ensure they remain fire resistant for a minimum of 30 minutes (FD30) or 60 minutes (FD60) - holding out long enough to cover response times and evacuation. Fire door hardware is also meticulously designed to comply with UK Construction Products Regulations and is tested under BS EN 1154, BS EN 1155 and BS EN 1634 standards and CE marked. After all, without functioning hardware, a fire door is rendered useless.

Fire door safety is an area that should never be neglected. Often, fire doors are the first line of defense in protecting people and property in the event of a fire - but only when installed and maintained appropriately. Yet, as incident reports repeatedly highlight, the significance of working fire doors remains habitually overlooked.

The latest in reformed guidelines hope to address this, with the introduction of this year’s Fire Safety Act 2021 and the Building Safety Bill highlighting the diligent detail in which all responsible parties must approach the subject.

MISSING KNOWLEDGE Fire doors fall under what’s described as a building’s passive fire protection system.

At their most basic and when closed, they form a barrier and enable a building to compartmentalise the spread of fire and smoke. When open, they provide an essential means of escape. Yet there’s nothing rudimentary about fire door safety.

However, danger commonly lies where fire door safety is misunderstood. Especially when you consider that last year alone, for local authorities, a staggering 65% of 26,318 planned fire door maintenance and replacement phases did not progress as scheduled - leaving doors neglected and buildings vulnerable. And while some may dispute that 2020 fell to extenuating circumstances, there’s no argument that fire door safety has become too easy to neglect.

CLOSING THE GAP Evidently, the gap in fire door safety expertise is resulting in poor design choices, faltering standards and general lack of knowledge. While it’s clear that expertise is lacking across various touchpoints think product selection, installation and maintenance - there is momentum to incite real change and the resources to improve awareness and education.

In response, and leading by example, is the Architects Registration Board (ARB) which recently published guidance to suggest fire safety is taught under architecture curriculum at universities. And while this shows positive steps are being made, the

All professional areas must commit and, in an age where information is almost instantaneous, there are several methods to gain a greater understanding of fire door safety - and all from trusted sources.

In light of Fire Door Safety Week, the British Woodworking Federation Group shares regular advice and useful toolkits on fire door safety; including a five step checklist that’s designed to support building owners in assessing their own fire doors (via certification, apertures, gaps and seals, closers and operation). Information pools like this provide modern building managers with the know-how they need to monitor and act - making the decision to repair or replace fire doors where necessary. For those actively involved in the maintenance stage, further guidance on topics such as certification and door closer adjustments is available online and by manufacturer request - showing fire door safety doesn’t need to be tackled alone.

When it comes to product selection and installation, there’s also a wealth of information and walkthroughs available in the form of detailed product datasheets and installation guides. These can often be found online and allow for a greater understanding on the hardware that’s available, leading to better design decisions and more reliable installation. Aside from product manuals, installers and contractors are commonly offered specialist site visits, training portals and even hardware classification guides in a bid to assist with projects post-installation.

With this, professionals can ensure that their standards don’t slip after time passes, by understanding more about the rounded process that fire door safety is and being ready for maintenance periods when they approach.

Today’s associations, professional bodies and manufacturers are on hand more than ever to assist specifiers, installers and end users throughout the process that is fire door safety. The support is there, and the resources are readily available and so, there’s now a real opportunity to improve fire safety awareness and education for the better.

NATIONAL MANUFACTURING INSTITUTE SCOTLAND HQ REACHES MAJOR CONSTRUCTION MILESTONE Construction at the flagship National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) facility at the heart of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland in Renfrewshire has reached a major milestone with the installation of 1,500 tonnes of structural steel now complete and the building on schedule to open in Autumn 2022.

The milestone was marked by a bolt tightening ceremony, which saw Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal and ViceChancellor of the University of Strathclyde, operator of NMIS, tighten the final bolt in the frame.

Now clearly visible from surrounding areas thanks to its impressive size and distinct heather-coloured cladding, another key element of the flagship facility is also coming to life – erection of the structural timber frame, which is set to house the collaboration hub, is now well underway.

It will feature a unique lattice design and sit next to the steel framed digital factory and manufacturing skills academy. At the same time, work has begun on the glazing of a 384m2 window to the world, which will overlook Netherton Square and give passers-by a glimpse into the future of manufacturing.

When complete, the awe-inspiring building will be around 1.5 times the size of

Hampden Park football pitch and clearly identifiable from the sky above nearby Glasgow Airport.

Aiming for a BREEAM ‘outstanding’ award for sustainability - the highest accolade for sustainability in UK construction, the main contractor, Morrison Construction is integrating innovative technologies and materials that have been or can be remanufactured and reused, while also striving to avoid the use of the most polluting ones.

Welcoming the construction milestone, John Reid, CEO of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland, said: “This is a truly significant milestone in the construction of our headquarters, and we are thrilled to see the building come to life. The key difference between the T Pylon design and a traditional lattice tower is the formation in which it supports the conductors. Traditional towers usually carry their conductors in a vertical arrangement, suspended either side of the tower on separate crossarms.

The T-pylon suspends its conductors from just two points which are arranged in a diamond formation. This maintains the necessary electrical clearance between the conductors themselves, as well as between the conductors and the ground. The design also allows the structure to be shorter and has a smaller land footprint.

How will they be constructed?

Initially deep foundations are installed at each tower location. These are then topped by concrete pile caps which consolidate the foundations.

The T-pylon base is then lifted into place by two large cranes, with the entire pylon fully erected in just 3 – 4 sections. This contrasts with a traditional lattice pylon which requires dozens of lifts as different components are added.

Why is it important to help support the UK’s drive towards its net zero target?

What is the latest update with the project?

The first T-Pylon has now been erected and the team is busy getting to work on the remaining 48 that are due to be built and strung with conductors by next year.

In addition, access works are already underway in the north section of the project site, where the remaining 68 structures will be erected during the second phase of works.

Firstly, how does it feel to be representing the first new electricity pylon design in Great Britain for almost 100 years?

Connecting 6m homes and business to low carbon energy is an incredible project, and it’s exciting to now have the new T-pylon design which adds to National Grid’s suite of approaches and technologies to mitigate the impact of electricity infrastructure on the landscape and environment.

Talk us through the project, what were the main ideas behind the T-Pylon?

The T-pylon was selected from over 250 pylon design ideas put forward in an international competition organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects, Government (the then Department of Energy and Climate Change) and National Grid in 2011 and was won by Danish firm Bystrup. The competition sought a new pylon design to help balance the need for new energy infrastructure which could complement changing external surroundings.

This is the UK’s first new pylon for overhead electricity lines in 100 years. They have a single pole and T-shaped cross arms, which feature suspension diamonds like ‘earrings’ - which hold the cables.

When they are energised on the Hinkley Connection Project they will be the world’s first operational T-pylons.

What are the challenges for the project?

It is extremely important to us that we mitigate our impact on communities. We recognise that any construction activity affects local people and work hard to limit and balance that impact. As far back as 2009, we have worked closely with landowners, residents and councils, and before we started work, we held events and meetings to share the latest information on the project so that people were aware of the works to come and had opportunities to raise any concerns they may have had. During consultation for the Hinkley Connection Project, local people showed a preference for T-pylons over our lattice pylons. Their feedback was most valuable and helped shape our plans.

We are always looking for innovative new ways to mitigate the impact of our infrastructure on the natural environment and projects such as T pylons are a great example. The full route is made up of 14 interconnected project stages and is scheduled to be ready to connect Hinkley Point C in 2024 and complete in 2025. How important is it to try and ensure the design works with the surrounding environment?

Where there is a need to mitigate the impact of infrastructure in the areas we work in it’s important that we consult with local communities to hear their views too. For example on this project, we consulted with local people for five years and over that time received 11,000 pieces of feedback which helped shape our plans, as the local community demonstrated a preference for the new shaped pylon. As well as introducing T-pylons, we’re also installing 8.5km of 400-000 volt underground cables in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, meaning this part of the Mendips will be pylon free for the first time since the 1960s and we’re also removing 249 electricity pylons between Bridgwater and Avonmouth.

Carleton Lodge Development Ltd. was set up by Moscicki Property to construct the five terraced and four large, detached properties on land at Carleton near Pontefract, to offer future occupants comfortable and economic to run, high specification homes in a secluded setting. O’Neil Construction is leading the build, while locally based R. J. Jones is the installer of the plumbing and heating services throughout the new houses.

As the sub-contractor’s founder, Rob Jones confirms his decision to use ClipRail was based on the competitive quote given by Holmfirth based merchant, Holmebuild and the service support available through Circoflo, together with E Tupling: the underfloor heating specialist’s main distributor across the north of England.

Rob Jones commented: “The Carleton project represented a significant contract for which I sought quotes from a number of sources. Apart from the price Holmebuild offered me, there was the attraction of rapid delivery via Tupling and good technical support. The individual CAD drawings for each plot worked out well, apart from places such as where some of the kitchen areas hadn’t been decided

exactly when the original drawings were done.

Overall I was pleased with the system.”

The Plumbing Manager for Holmebuild, Darren, added: “We’ve been impressed with the direct contact we’ve had with Circoflo – which is one of the reasons we switched from our previous underfloor heating supplier and while we do not have sufficient space at present to keep Circoflo packs in stock, we are always able to get them on next day delivery from E Tupling.”

In the first five houses completed, R. J. Jones’ engineers have clipped the 12mm pipe runs down across Jablite insulation ready for the flooring contractor to lay a conventional wet screed, and connecting each circuit back to the plot specific manifolds provided as part of the Circoflo package. The 133mm pipe spacing and good thermal transmittance via the screed will help achieve very good occupant comfort while assisting the heating systems to run at optimum efficiency.
