SUSTAINABLE ROOFING EXCELLENCE FROM CARLISLE® AT BECKINGHAM CADET CENTRE Designed to support the next generation of cadets, the Beckingham Cadet Centre in Lincolnshire has been designed to meet the Ministry of Defence’s DREAM standard (Defence Related Environmental Assessment Methodology), and a significant part of the environmental specification was focused on the roof. For this SPRA ‘Highly Commended’ project, the CARLISLE® Biodiverse Green Roof System was installed on a 515m² area of the 850m² roof by roofing contractor, Malden Roofing Contractors Ltd. This included a high-performance HERTALAN® EPDM single ply roofing membrane, installed using CARLISLE®’s induction technology. The roof also features a solar PV installation, ensuring that the building reduces energy consumption, as well as enhancing biodiversity.

Environmental performance Due to the way HERTALAN® EPDM is vulcanised, it can be mechanically fixed with the CARLISLE® Induction System, using an induction machine and specially coated induction-compatible plates. The Cradle to Cradle® Certified HERTALAN® EPDM roof covering provides excellent waterproofing performance, remains permanently elastic throughout its service life, and delivers certified root resistance (EN13948) to FLL approved

standards, making it an ideal choice for green roof projects. HERTALAN® EPDM also offered excellent compatibility for the solar panels. Pieces of HERTALAN® EPDM were pre-installed onto the solar panel brackets at the solar factory so that sections of membrane could be welded over the fixings.

Buildability benefits HERTALAN® EPDM also answered the project’s performance and buildability requirements. The 1.2mm HERTALAN® EPDM-membrane was made-to-measure at CARLISLE®’s vulcanization facility, creating a bespoke membrane that enabled the roofing contractor to cover the roof quickly with a single pull, making it watertight. Minimal seams also meant reduced time detailing laps and avoided the risks associated with welding seams on-site.

The HERTALAN® EPDM also lent itself to easier detailing on site, which included

apertures for three rooflights and the fall arrest system. The apertures were cut aligned to the schedule to ensure the rooflight units could be fitted straight away and the building remained watertight. All seams and detailing were sealed using HERTALAN® Easy Weld Cover Strips, which are hot air welded, avoiding the need for any naked flames on-site. The HERTALAN® EPDM system can adapt to changes in the angle of the substrate without the risk of cracking or tearing thanks to its highly flexible and virtually shrink free properties, with elongation at tear of up to 600% and permanent elasticity, making it ideal for the project’s flat to pitched areas.

Turnkey solution The performance of roof build-up was enhanced by CARLISLE®’s technical support, which included providing U-value and condensation risk, rainwater, and wind-uplift calculations, along with fixing detail drawings. The result is a building that provides both a contemporary environment for the cadets, and an environmental benchmark for the MoD.
