COMPANY NEWS At 3,060-ft-long and 100-ft-wide, the redevelopment of the bridge - designed by Michael Maltzan, Architect, and HNTB, Structural Engineer - includes 10 network arch spans, with a total of 388 hangers supporting the bridge deck. Appointed as the Erection Engineer on the project with an extensive complex structure expertise, COWI worked closely with Skanska Stacy and Witbeck (SSW) to develop a constructable erection sequence, which includes step by step camber and stress analyses, and hanger installation and stressing procedure of the bridge. The current construction stage concludes the hanger installation of the first span as well as the removal of the falsework underneath.

COWI COMPLETES ENGINEERING MILESTONE ON THE ICONIC 6TH STREET VIADUCT IN LA COWI, a leading international engineering consulting group, celebrates an engineering milestone on the new 6th Street Viaduct construction in Los Angeles (LA), following the successful hanger installation of the first span out of 10 spans of the new viaduct.

The next step of the project is the closure of the superstructure continuity followed by the hanger installation in the second span with completion of the bridge planned for mid-2022.

FOUNDRY LIGHTING EXPAND INTO DUBAI

Spanning across Freeway 101, several rail roads and the LA river, the 6th Street Viaduct replacement project is one of the largest bridge projects currently underway in the City of LA. Originally built in 1932, the iconic bridge – commonly recognized for its appearance in the hit movie-musical ‘Grease’ - provides a vital connection between Boyle Heights and Downtown LA’s Art District. In 2016, the bridge was demolished following the decision to replace the existing 6th Street Viaduct due to the structure becoming seismically vulnerable.

Due to a significant increase in demand for projects in the Middle East, Foundry now has a permanent Dubai presence to service the local community. This international success is just part of Foundry’s rapid growth, which has been phenomenal over the past few years.

Lighting industry expert, Jason Perks, has been appointed by Foundry as the new director of the Dubai studio. He will be responsible for leading projects in the Middle East and other international regions, as well as being part of the strategic team to further develop and grow Foundry.

SHIP’S HULL INSPIRES INSTALLATION AT EDWARD STREET QUARTER Internationally renowned master sculptor Casto Solano has revealed designs for the public art gateway marking the entrance to Brighton’s newest neighbourhood Edward Street Quarter.

Work by his British-Spanish studio SolArt has appeared in cities around the world, including Paris, Vancouver and Seattle.

Now his latest sculpture, inspired by the hull of a ship and whale bones, will connect Edward Street Quarter with its history as a fishing community.

SolArt’s public art will feature a reflective ceiling enabling people to see their faces and encouraging them to interact with the piece. The outer layer will be made of weathering steel which ages over time, recalling the rusty hull of a ship.

The studio is based in the Basque Country in northern Spain, where leading expert Casto has built his international reputation for producing outdoor artworks for 30 years.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT SECTOR LACKS CLARITY AROUND ITS CARBON EMISSIONS According to new research, the majority (58%) of built environment professionals believe the sector is already doing enough to tackle its carbon impact, despite the built environment contributing 36% of total global energy-related CO2 emissions, and the most recent available data showing that CO2 from operational energy use of buildings reached its highest level yet in 2019.

For its City of Tomorrow report, building performance analyst IES spoke to a wide range of professionals working in the built environment sector about the current status of sustainability methods and targets, including engineers, facilities managers, contractors, developers, planners and architects.

The report revealed that only 29% of those working in the sector felt that it should be doing more to reduce its carbon impact, and 13% were unsure if current efforts would be enough.

The research suggests that this complacency could stem from a lack of awareness around the full extent of the built environment’s carbon contributions.

NEW WARMINSTER SITE TAKES LEGAL & GENERAL MODULAR HOMES’ PIPELINE TO OVER 800 EPC-A RATED HOMES Legal & General Modular Homes is proposing a new neighbourhood of innovative modular homes at Bore Hill Farm in Warminster. The plan, the first of its kind in Wiltshire, would deliver 95 highly sustainable, energy efficient and affordable homes on the site which is allocated for residential development in the Wiltshire Council plan.

Legal & General Modular Homes’ innovative approach to housing delivery has gained significant momentum within the marketplace, with the business commencing construction on sites at Selby, Bristol and Broadstairs during the year for the delivery of 450 homes. Having also acquired land at Littlestone, Kent, North Horsham and Warminster the business is currently seeking planning permission to deliver a further c.400 homes across these three sites, with construction expected to commence early in 2022. Opportunities are also being surfaced to deliver thousands more homes over the next three years across the country.

ID:SR SHEPPARD ROBSON COMPLETES ON BT LONDON HQ ID:SR Sheppard Robson has recently completed BT’s London headquarters. The London HQ encapsulates many qualities that BT promotes throughout its estate.

The office embraces agile working, moving away from cellular offices. Wellness is woven throughout the design, with “community” floors with café and restaurant spaces for socialising, and quieter spaces, such as the multi-faith and contemplation rooms. We consulted with BT’s “Able 2” network, which promotes accessible design principles, to create inclusive spaces—both in terms of physical access and neurodiversity.

Physical and visual connections are key to the design of the London HQ. We added a new staircase to the base-build to connect levels five up to 15, encouraging physical movement

between floors and the different spaces the contain. In the double-height reception, which is animated by café and retail spaces, visual connections with the customer-focused “showcase” floor on level 1 are made.

The London HQ includes a Customer Showcase experience (opening in March 2022) and a BT / EE retail concept store adjacent to the main entrance at ground floor. The spaces activate the buildings arrival experience, focusing on customer and colleague experience and brand immersion.

They have been designed as community spaces where customers can discover and experience BT’s technology and innovation as well as exploring and showcasing latest product and network development projects.

We are also working with BT on their new

home in Bristol, a 13-storey waterfront development close to Bristol Temple Meads station. The Assembly Bristol building— part of the growing Bristol Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone—will offer state-of-the-art facilities for more than 2,000 BT colleagues.

Our work included strategic briefing, duediligence and acquisition for the Bristol project. The culmination of these services will be a new building that fits BT perfectly, now and into the future. The detailed design of the project builds on the success of the “Future Ways of Working” strategy, with the same range of spaces as well as flexible and peoplefocused approach guiding the design.

Our other projects with BT include offices in London, Sheffield and Dundee, which are in the early stages of the design process.

COMING SOON TO BUCKINGHAMSHIRE: CREST NICHOLSON TO LAUNCH NEW DEVELOPMENT IN WAVENDON Crest Nicholson is preparing to launch a contemporary mix of 105 homes – a mix of two to five bedroom houses – at Manor View, its new development in Buckinghamshire. Situated on the edge of the village of Wavendon, and a stone’s throw away from Milton Keynes, Manor View is an extension of neighbouring Crest Nicholson development Morton Park, where residents will be able to be part of the established, thriving community in the area from Spring 2022.

The range of eight available house types at the development will all feature flexible layouts, with open plan kitchen-dining areas, modern interiors, and high-quality finishes throughout.

With a wide range of different homes available, the development will appeal to first time buyers, growing families and downsizers alike. The government backed Help to Buy: Equity Loan initiative and Crest Nicholson’s Part Exchange and Deposit Unlock schemes will be available on selected plots to help home hunters secure their dream home.

FIRST GLIMPSE OF NEW MULTI-MILLION POUND LEEDS DEVELOPMENT Homebuyers, investors and the people of Leeds have been given their first glimpse of a new £23.5 million city centre apartment development, after its scaffolding and site hoardings were taken down as the scheme approaches completion.

This follows last month’s topping out of The Residence, which sits at the very eastern end of Kirkstall Road. The development by KMRE Group, consists of 111, one, two and three bedroom apartments, as well as two penthouses with large terraces and stunning views across Leeds and beyond. The ground floor of the development offers 2,400 sq ft of commercial space and there are also 25 parking spaces.

TRUE BLUE TAKES GOLD IN 2021 WAN AWARDS In Bergen, Norway, White Arkitekter is designing the city’s new waterfront park and new Lungegårds Park. The project received gold in the category “Future projects – Leisure” at WAN Awards. The global awards acknowledge and celebrate outstanding works of innovative, visionary, and imaginative architects worldwide.

Norway. The proposal called True Blue is based on water, which is the most tangible element in Bergen with its estuaries, fjords, and ocean as well as from the sky. It will be the city’s new public lounge with a wide range of activities and recreation areas, while providing innovative solutions for environmental and climate adaptation.

The Mayor and the presenter of Channel 4 programmes Restoration Man, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and Old House, New Home, are launching a London-wide challenge for young people aged between 11 and 25. The challenge, created by George’s education charity MOBIE – Ministry of Building Innovation and Education – and the Mayor, is asking young people to let their imaginations run free by designing an innovative and inspirational green home and urban neighbourhood in the Royal Docks, East London close to where City Hall will be moving in 2022.

The home and neighbourhood designs should address four key priorities central to London’s

ecological restauration, resulting in a unique compelling progressive approach to a leisure project”.

The premise of the project is “life in water – life on land” and the overarching concept of the park is about improving the water quality in the bay. True Blue contains natural systems to purify the water that runs into the bay, as well as sub surface additions to stimulate the marine ecology. These systems are carefully designed to be both functional, attractive and a source of learning for visitors. The exciting architectural approach creates a park which is both beautiful and sustainable.

TRIPLE AWARD FOR LAMILUX All good things come in threes! At this year’s Architects’ Darling awards, LAMILUX won in no less than three different categories. Not only did the manufacturer of daylight systems win silver in the product awards in the two categories “Glass and Glass Structures” and “Daylight Systems/Roof Lighting”, but also in the jury awards. Here, LAMILUX scores in the category “Best BIM Data Offer”.

This year, the best building product manufacturers were awarded the Architects’ Darling in a total of 38 categories. For the product awards, Heinze Market Research conducted an independent survey on new product categories among up to 100,000 German architects and planners. In addition, other overarching marketing disciplines were honoured with the Jury Award by a top-class jury. LAMILUX won two product awards and a silver jury award.

The shortlist will be judged by a distinguished Grand Jury chaired by world-renowned multidisciplinary French architect and urban planner, Odile Decq. The jury members are: Es Devlin OBE, acclaimed British artist and designer, Jeanne Gang, American architect and founder of Studio Gang with offices in the USA and Paris, Rossana Hu, architect and founding Partner of Neri&Hu based in Shanghai, China and Brazilian, Gustavo Utrabo, winner of the 2018 RIBA International Prize and Emerging Architect Prize.

Due to the ongoing travel restrictions across the world, projects that the Grand Jury are unable to visit in person this year will be included in the shortlisting stage of the next edition of the RIBA International Prize.

ZENTIA SYSTEMS HELP VELUX® REACH FOR THE SKY Ceiling systems by leading UK manufacturer Zentia were specified for a new £7.7 million extension to the UK and Ireland headquarters of world-leading daylight solutions provider VELUX for a trio of reasons at least.

The project was the first time Zentia’s Ultima+ Finesse mineral tiles have been installed in Scotland where VELUX UK and Ireland’s headquarters have been located on a 1.6-hectare site in Glenrothes, Fife, for 35 years.

Back then it had 50 employees there. Now it has 172. The Finesse tiles were complemented

by Ultima+ OP Microlook tiles, also in 600mm x 600mm format.

They were selected by regular Zentia specifiers Sinclair Watt Architects as they met the Class 1, aesthetic, fire and acoustic performance required for the 37,673ft² two-storey building which features an engineered timber and steel structural frame.

Designed to complement the gently sloping site, the extension features full-height glazing and stone and timber cladding and showcases the latest VELUX technology. It joins the existing building via a new staff entrance, which features a green roof, aluminium guttering and timber rainscreen cladding.

Some 1,1,00m² of the Zentia Ultima+ OP Microlook tiles were used in the ground floor offices and storerooms, while 100m² of the Finesse tiles were used in the restaurant, kitchen and toilets. The Ultima+ range features class-leading light reflectance of 87% and Euroclass A2-�1, d0 fire classification, the OP Microlook variant with Class A sound absorption and Finesse a fully concealed, fully painted edge detail.

Mineral ceiling tiles by Zentia feature in a new extension to VELUX UK and Ireland’s HQ in Scotland.

Sinclair Watt were provided with a detailed brief to provide accommodation for a new main entrance and reception area, product display hall, meeting room suite, additional office space and customer service telephone hall and ancillary accommodation. By necessity these were required to be large spaces to accommodate large numbers of employees and visitors.

The building had to achieve seven basic goals to allow VELUX to be a good neighbour, to be simple and beautiful, to make arrival a good experience, to be a model of balanced daylight, natural ventilation, good indoor comfort and healthy materials, to apply a well-defined, high-quality structural concept, to obtain good sustainable standards with a minimum use of energy, to be visible and logical, and to create value and express the VELUX values.

Sinclair Watt met this by incorporating a regular and prominent engineered timber and steel structural frame that provided a design with a clear distinction between the supporting structure of the building and the facades and roof. This was both to create clarity and logic in the design and to make it possible to replace or update the not-so-permanent parts of the building. The roof form is curved to reduce the overall scale of the building.

The internal design incorporates a central street and atrium that acts as a meeting place as well as a general circulation area and allows the best use of natural sunlight and natural ventilation throughout the building. The building provides good indoor comfort and utilises healthy materials.

Architect Projects

The three key areas - energy efficiency, healthy indoor environment and renewable energy - constitute the basis of the new building.

A fabric-first approach for the building was adopted with high insulation levels and low air permeability rates to reduce overall heat loss from the building. This combined with a natural

Architect Iain Mitchell said: “We specified the Zentia systems as they have a good product range, good suspension systems, with good product information and good technical backup. They met all the aesthetic, fire and acoustic performances. Zentia shadow and transition trims were used so the Zentia ceilings tie in well with adjacent plasterboard walls and ceilings. The client is very happy with the ceiling installation and building as a whole.”

The ceiling installation was completed for main contractor ISG by specialist sub-contractor PFP who had a team of up to six operatives on site for seven months prior to the first Covid lockdown. It was the first time they had installed the Ultima+ Finesse tile from Zentia, who have evolved from Armstrong Ceiling Solutions.

Commercial director Colin Burns said: “We had some meetings with Zentia to talk through the detailing of the Finesse element and put it to the guys on site but apart from that, and some coordinating with services, it was very straightforward. It looks good as it always does and gives a nice bright finish. It was interesting to be the first installer of Finesse in Scotland.”

PROJECT: The Crow’s Nest BY AR Design Studio AR Design Studio was approached by the clients who were looking to extend their holiday home on a cliff top on the South Coast. During the planning process, and due to an unprecedented amount of rainfall during the winter months of 2014, concerns about movement in the land were raised and a decision was made to replace the house entirely. AR Design Studio was then tasked with designing a completely

new home; the idea of movement and fracturing formed the backbone of the concept.

Working closely with engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan, an imaginative structural solution was proposed to prevent future failure. A concrete slab was built into the ground, a series of strategically placed dwarf walls were then built on top of it.

A floating structural frame was then laid on top of the walls to act as an adjustable raft in case of future movement. Beneath the frame, there are specific places for mechanical jacks to be positioned so that the house can be securely re-levelled.

The design concept starts as a traditional cabin-like-form that then splits, twists and rotates, resulting in four pods.

The outcome is a beautifully haphazard rough-sawn larch clad house that silhouettes against the wooded backdrop.

The clearly defined entrance pod, the smallest of the four, guides you through the hallway into the central pod; the main living space comprising of kitchen, dining and living room.

THE SUSTAINABILITY OF GALVANIZED STEEL Galvanized steel is an integral part of everyday life, and it’s all around us. But how does its prevalence today affect the environment of the future? How sustainable is it? What role does it play in the circular economy? And is the galvanizing process itself environmentally friendly?

Steel is essential for housing, infrastructure, transport, manufacturing, and agriculture.

It’s used as frames for our buildings, safety on our roads, and support for the bridges we cross. Hence, we must never waste it or waste the resources used to produce it by throwing it away when its original function is no longer valid. Instead, we must repurpose steel, especially if the world wants to move away from traditional business models of use-throw-away-remake to a more environmentally friendly, sustainable circular economy that aims to eliminate waste and repurpose resources.

What is a circular economy, and how can galvanizing play a part?

A circular economy encourages materials to be made, used, reused, remade and recycled.

Hot dip galvanizing fits perfectly into a circular economy because it optimises the durability of steel (enabling it to be used again), facilitates the ease of reuse, and if there’s no immediate need to repurpose, it can be recycled. Here’s how: • Optimising durability When steel is galvanized, it is immersed into a bath of molten zinc, where it alloys with the iron in the steel to form zinc/iron alloy layers. These layers form the basis of the coating, which is then overlain with free zinc as the steel is lifted from the galvanizing bath.

The result is a robust, durable and corrosion protective finish that will last for many years.

Without a galvanized coating, steel would corrode, and its lifespan would be short.

However, with a galvanized coating, steel can last between 34 and 170 years before the base steel is exposed. This means that steel

can be used for the original purpose for which it was fabricated, and – once the project is dismantled – the steel is still good enough to be used elsewhere.

• Facilitating ease of reuse Once a structure – such as a house or fencing – reaches its end of life, the steel can easily be repurposed if it has been hot dip galvanized.

This is because the galvanized coating protects the steel from impact and abrasion when disassembled and reassembled.

• Recycling Finally, galvanized steel fits nicely into a circular economy because it can be melted and used repeatedly with no loss of quality if there is no immediate need for repurposing.

The zinc coating can also be reused. Zinc and steel are recycled in well-established steel recycling processes. The zinc particulates are returned, without loss of properties, to zinc production plants, where they are incorporated into zinc ingots and reused in the galvanizing process.

How else does the galvanizing process enhance sustainability?

A hot dip galvanized finish gives steel a long life and durability. In addition, it creates a maintenance-free finish, which lessens the carbon emissions usually associated with the upkeep of non-galvanized steel.

Mick Jackson from Joseph Ash Galvanizing says: “Imagine a bridge made from nongalvanized steel. It would need maintenance every year to protect it from rust and corrosion. It would also need repainting at regular intervals. This requires paint, a workforce, transport for the workers and a means to protect the land or water below from paint contamination. If the same bridge is made from galvanized steel, this maintenance is not required, and carbon emissions are greatly lessened.”

Is the galvanizing process environmentally friendly?

Galvanizing plants are self-contained, with steel going in at one end and the final product coming out at the other.

Modern galvanizing plants also use zinc very efficiently throughout the galvanizing process. For example, excess metal from the dipping process deposits back into the galvanizing bath. Zinc that oxidises on the surface is removed as ash and recycled, and dross from the bottom of the bath is routinely removed and has a high recycling value.

Other process consumables such as hydrochloric acid and flux solutions also have important recycling or regeneration routes.

Spent hydrochloric acid solutions are used to produce iron chloride for treating municipal wastewater, for example. Closed-loop flux recycling is also used in many plants and improved monitoring and maintenance of flux tanks reduce the volume of solids for disposal. When compared to other coating technologies galvanizing uses low volumes of water, with plants rarely discharging wastewater. Any wastewater generated can be treated and reused, with only small volumes of stable solids requiring external disposal.

While not considered a particularly energyintensive sector, the galvanizing industry also has set targets for energy efficiency and improved energy management. New technology has seen improvements in burner efficiency, bath lid efficiency, and reuse of waste heat to warm pre-treatment tanks.

Plant emissions are also carefully controlled

to ensure neighbouring communities are not adversely affected.

BALKRISHNA DOSHI TO RECEIVE 2022 ROYAL GOLD MEDAL FOR ARCHITECTURE The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is pleased to announce that Balkrishna Doshi will receive the Royal Gold Medal 2022, one of the world’s highest honours for architecture.

Given in recognition of a lifetime’s work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally

by Her Majesty The Queen and is given to a person or group of people who have had a significant influence on the advancement of architecture. It has been awarded since 1848 and will be presented to Balkrishna Doshi at a special ceremony in 2022.

With a 70 year career and over 100 built projects, Balkrishna Doshi has influenced the direction of architecture in India and its adjacent regions through both his practice and his teaching. His buildings combine

pioneering modernism with vernacular, informed by a deep appreciation of the traditions of India’s architecture, climate, local culture and craft. His projects include administrative and cultural facilities, housing developments and residential buildings. He has become internationally known for his visionary urban planning and social housing projects, as well as his work in education, both in India and as a visiting professor at universities around the world.

Born in 1927 in Pune, India, to an extended family of furniture makers, Balkrishna Doshi studied at the J J School of Architecture, Bombay, before working for four years with Le Corbusier as Senior Designer (1951-54) in Paris and four more years in India to supervise projects in Ahmedabad. He worked with Louis Kahn as an associate to build the

On hearing the news that he will receive the Royal Gold Medal in 2022, Balkrishna Doshi said: “I am pleasantly surprised and deeply humbled to receive the Royal Gold Medal from the Queen of England. What a great honour! The news of this award brought back memories of my time working with Le Corbusier in 1953 when he had just received the news of getting the Royal Gold Medal.

I vividly recollect his excitement to receive this honour from Her Majesty. He said to me metaphorically, ‘I wonder how big and heavy this medal will be.’ Today, six decades later I feel truly overwhelmed to be bestowed with the same award as my guru, Le Corbusier honouring my six decades of practice. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my wife, my daughters and most importantly my team and collaborators at Sangath my studio.”

Le Dôme Winery IN BORDEAUX WELCOMES ITS FIRST VISITORS Nestled in the rolling hills of Bordeaux, the new Le Dôme winery in Saint-Émilion has welcomed its first visitors. Designed and engineered by the practice, the low-lying building blends seamlessly with the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape of the region with a state-of-the-art facility for the internationally renowned wine, Le Dôme. The form of the building is rooted in a desire to create a structure that simultaneously looks both inwards and outwards, providing an efficient space for wine production, while engaging in dialogue with the surrounding landscape.

Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman, Foster + Partners, said: “When Jonathan Maltus first approached us, he expressed a desire to create a distinctive new winery, set against the unique backdrop of St Emilion. He wanted the building to be a celebration of the beautiful site, focussing on the views of the vineyard and making the landscape the primary protagonist in the design. The idea was to blend the building with its surroundings while creating a welcoming space for visitors and wine enthusiasts.”

Visitors approach the winery along a tree-lined avenue, at the end of which is a circular-plan building. A combination of two ramps – one external to emphasise the relationship with the site and the other internal, allowing the visitor to walk through the different stages of the wine process – gives the new building its spatial definition. Both ramps lead up to a gallery on the upper level which forms the social heart of the building with tasting tables, an elegant wine bar and entertainment spaces – all wrapped by 360-degree views of the adjoining vineyards.

The architectural and industrial design teams at Foster + Partners worked closely from the outset to create an interior design solution that is an integral part of the architecture. A curved wine bar looking out onto the vineyards alongside circular tables forms the tasting area to the left. A circular atrium allows people to look down onto the wine production and storage spaces below, providing a holistic and unique experience for visitors.

To the right of the entrance, discrete office pods help create space for focussed work within a busy environment. The timber screens wrap around the desk spaces to allow for acoustic and visual privacy while preserving sightlines to the outside and blending in with the architecture, with the lines in the ceiling reflected in the timber screens.

The 40-metre diameter timber roof is a unique reciprocal structure consisting of mutually supporting sloping beams that spans over large column-free space. The structure naturally creates a 6-metre-wide oculus at its centre, which allows daylight to flood the upper level. The roof is clad with recycled local terracotta tiles, while the base of the building – made with concrete using aggregate from the region – is covered with timber slats and partially buried into the ground to reduce its visual impact on the terrain and increase thermal mass performance. The building to reinforces the landscape by creating a hill-like form that echoes the gentle slopes that surround it.

The UK and Ireland have long embraced the European style systems which have now been specified in the British Isles for many decades. Many of the UK based systems companies have emulated these European systems, but still the majority of window and curtain wall systems installed in the UK and Ireland are supplied through European systems companies, that is until it comes to robust entrance door systems, or what is better known in the UK as ‘Ground Floor Treatments’ or ‘GFT’.

In Europe, there is a preference for mitred and rebated single and double door sets for swing entrance doors for shopping centres, offices and leisure facilities. Whilst their use is on the increase, the UK and Ireland have never fully embraced such door systems and instead preferred a non-rebated commercial door fitted on either floor or overhead concealed spring closers. These systems made their early debut in the 1960s when they were supplied in the UK

by North American aluminium systems companies. Using framing based on a 4” x 2” profile the systems were initially used in new shopfronts and office entrances. These GFT systems are still being specified today because they offer a cost-effective, robust construction coupled with a good life expectancy.

80 GROSVENOR ST – A FUSION OF MODERNISM AND TRADITIONAL DESIGN Eighty Grosvenor Street is set in the heart of the art district in London’s prestigious Mayfair not far from Bond Street. Developed by Frelene Ltd, it is an excellent example of how an existing historic building can be reimagined for modern use. Behind the traditional facade, sits a contemporary structure that belies the age of the original buildings on the site.

Originally three individual period townhouses, the building has been transformed into a single, mixed use structure spanning five upper storeys complete with private terraces on the 4th and 5th floors. The new steel frame structure (SFS) has been created to overcome the challenges of delivering modern day open plan spaces flooded with light in a traditional historic building. The use of reclaimed Suffolk white brickwork and sensitive replacement timber windows to the front ensure the building remains in keeping with the Georgian aesthetic of the street.

The windows are elegant and contextually sit well within the retained façade.

Working with Orms Architects, Kier Construction set out to retain part of the original facade at the front of the building as per planning. Due to the company’s extensive experience working on retained facade projects, George Barnsdale was appointed to manufacture and install the timber windows to the front of the building where the Georgian aesthetic needed to be retained.

George Barnsdale invested a great deal of time at tender stage to ensure the designs met the requirements of the Grosvenor Estates team.

Having worked on a number of properties in the area, the company’s experience and knowledge proved invaluable to the design process.

Commenting on the design process, Kathryn Knowles, Architect, Orms said “We were looking to achieve a bespoke framing element to make sure that we captured the existing window profiles which were originally on the retained façade. Barnsdale were very accommodating and assisted to make sure that we achieved the retained façade replication.”

Back on site in Lincolnshire, the windows were designed to incorporate an overall frame thickness of 128mm which is not a standard product. Taking one of the company’s standard frame profiles as a base, two versions of decorative frame add on were developed. This ensured the performance data for the whole window was accurate whilst at the same time incorporating a sympathetic bespoke design. A simple pencil round profile was used with a more ornate profile for the two arched openings.

PROJECT - Aeon: WHERE TWO WORLDS MEET Boundaries – between past and future, between dream and reality, between inside and outside: noa* makes the invisible lines visible, which become part of the full picture and, above all, instead of a separation, a connection between two worlds. It is a privilege to have the space to realize one’s own vision, nestled between one’s own meadows and woods, with an expanse that affords views from the Sciliar to the Rittner Horn, all the way to the Merano Alps and the Dolomites.

“The creation of an ambivalent tension between the centuries-old tradition of the rural complex and an exclusively modern statement was the basic principle underlying the design process,” stresses architect Christian Rottensteiner in describing the initial approaches to the concept.

LET THINGS TAKE THEIR COURSE From the very beginning, the 550-year-old farm turned out to be a valuable source of inspiration for the development process of the project, whose horizons allow one to look far and wide. In order to create a certain spatial analogy from the site’s history, a gentle bond was made to its past, through the layout of the building units and details – the entire volume of the new buildings is consciously modeled on the existing structure.

PROJECT It would have been easy to simply go wild on the famous “green meadow.” But noa* chose a different path: the design consists of freestanding bodies that allow the landscape to flow through and become part of it. The result is two buildings, one hosting the public area with a reception, bistro, bar, and wellness area, the other the private area with a total of 15 guest suites.

“The gentle topography we found and the arrangement of open and at the same time protected outdoor spaces conditioned the layout of the individual building volumes,” says Christian Rottensteiner in explaining the architectural concept. At first glance, they appear singular and together they form a permeable courtyard context. However, there is an ingenious connection, a hallway that elegantly vanishes under an artificially created hill – hence disappearing out of sight.

LEARNED, FELT, TRANSFORMED The two buildings also establish a strong bond with the existing structures in their design language. You can find traditional gable roofs, as well as a very dynamic façade design with reinforcing slanted elements, that replicate the design of the struts and brackets of the historically listed barn while translating them into a modern statement. This allows the facades to be perceived differently – depending on how one approaches the edifice. This way, the east and west façades break strongly towards the outside, while the north and south sides appear as a homogeneous envelope. The trapezoid windows catch the eye in a striking way. The upper, slatted structure that stretches over the entire length of the building almost disguises the stories and create a homogeneous appearance.

“Verticality and linearity are the leitmotivs of two strongly contrasting design approaches – at times creating the feeling of floating between worlds.” – Christian Rottensteiner.

The entire project takes life from its many sophisticated details and stories, which always revolve around the family and the place where the project unfolds. For example, wood from the

Guests enter the building through an entrance portal made of black steel, which bears the family’s old coat of arms from 1464 on the outside. “The ‘slope’ is traditionally an element for load transfer and static reinforcement – here it was used to make the volume more dynamic and to make it merge with the landscape,” says Christian Rottensteiner, sharing his thoughts on the design approach.

A MYSTERIOUS “IN-BETWEEN” WORLD Stepping through the steel front door through the entrance area, one experiences an intense and extraordinary breakthrough, an immersion into something that atmospherically represents the future – because the entire interior is characterized by a colorful, horizontal dichotomy: A soft beige - communicates feelings of being grounded, familiar, delicateness – meets a mystical blue that embodies the future, the mysterious, the uncertain. This expressive, clear-cut division line is consistently drawn through both buildings – once horizontally, once vertically. Interior designer Patrick Gürtler explains the choice of colors: “The past has grown like stone, wood and nature. The future, on the other hand, is veiled, mysterious and artificial, i.e., it is intangible like the sky, the night, or the ocean. In between is the moment, a sharp, unconditional break, but also a point of contact.” A split – not to separate, but to connect. “Guests are invited to move through and sense this cosmos between polarizing environments,” Patrick Gürtler continues.

But the concept is not centered only on the floors, walls, and ceilings: All the furnishings – from the curtains, through the furniture to the light fixtures – are part of a holistic approach. As a kind of tightrope walk between “being rooted” and “wanting to fly,” an interior concept that seems completely detached from place and time unfolds before the eyes.

On the ground floor, a multi-functional room opens up to the visitor. While the reception, which features a discreet desk, welcomes the guests, the bar, with its unique details, catches the eye and invites to explore the surroundings: a large wine display in the

middle of comfortable bistro tables, the panoramic parlor that can be flexibly played with, the lounge area with open fireplace and mirrored ceiling, as well as the reading corner with hanging sofas, somewhat out of the way, define the space. Large window surfaces allow the surrounding nature to become an integral part of the room.

A FULL IMMERSION WITH ALL YOUR SENSES The wellness area is located on the first floor of this building. On the way up, one “dives” through the horizontal blue and finds oneself in the opposite color concept: as a symbol for water, the blue is now below. Once past the inviting fruit bar and the drinking fountain, the wide relaxation space and adjoining terrace open up. But the spa has much more to offer. The spectacular, half covered outdoor infinity pool juts out from the southwest side of the building, affording spectacular views.

It can be reached via a platform, the top level of which marks the “water’s edge,” marking once again the alternation between blue and beige.

DEFINING THE UNDEFINABLE Through this concept noa* aims to show the strength of the “in-between”; after all, the building site lies in a place where one stands firmly on the ground and at the same time has the feeling of being able to touch the clouds. In the public building, the

Just a few more steps up is a separate relaxation area that one can use as a meditation room, for yoga or relax. Right in front of it, in the outdoor area, is a whirlpool on a roof terrace with a view of the Dolomites. Immediately below, to the southeast, is the textile free area. The steam bath and the Finnish sauna are accessed through an anteroom with a large drinking fountain and shower facilities. While the steam-bath is located in a rather “introverted” position and directs the view to the water fountain and the sauna, which are more extroverted and open, with a view of the surrounding mystical woods.

MEETING, TOUCHING, BEGUILING The second building, which unlike its counterpart has three floors, hosts the 15 suites of the new hotel. The two buildings are connected to each other via an underground corridor, and here too the division of the color worlds takes a 90-degree turn: What was horizontal is now vertical. There is a deliberate psychological effect in play here, because from here on you can immerse your whole body in the respective area, which has an overall relaxing effect. Basically, there are three types of rooms, which differ in size and furnishings. The 35- square-meter (377 sq ft) junior suites open up from the entrance and bathroom area with freestanding washbasin and open shower into the living area with desk, private bar, and lounge, and finally into the sleeping area, which flows out into a 15-square-meter (161

sq ft) terrace or balcony. The idea of giving the bed in particular this unique position in the room with an expansive view is based on the famous idyll of the “bed in the cornfield.”

The suites on the ground floor also have a private whirlpool on their terraces. The larger suites, each measuring 55-square-meters (592 sq ft), have an additional living room with a hanging double bed and open onto the magnificent mountain panoramas on both sides.

Another highlight in the truest sense of the word is the Gallery Suite, where an internal staircase leads up to a living platform on the

roof, where you can watch the sky through the opening in the roof.

ENGAGING WITH THE COMPLEX In terms of color division, no compromises are made in the suites either: about one third of their surface is blue, two thirds beige, where a certain blending of the areas takes place through the dynamics applied. The light, partly floating, linear furniture takes inspiration from the architecture and is divided ruthlessly into two.

The walls are covered in fabric, almost dematerializing them with a surface that is

not perceived as a wall. “We have carefully chosen the fabrics, woods and colors that play both with and against each other at the same time,” points out Patrick Gürtler.

Thus, the haptics that come into play here and a certain indefiniteness arouse curiosity and call to start a journey of discovery: With a cleverly staged changeability, which is created by the consistent linear clash of two deliberately selected colors, noa* gives guests the opportunity to have a unique spatial experience, which possibly goes far beyond the previously known.

LEGAL & GENERAL AND WATES BREAK GROUND AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD’S LIFE AND MIND BUILDING Legal & General, Oxford University and Wates are pleased to announce that construction has started on the ‘Life and Mind Building’ in Oxford, as part of Legal & General and Oxford University’s £4bn partnership. This building represents the largest building project ever undertaken on behalf of the University, and will be its largest teaching and research facility, significantly improving the way that biology and psychology are taught in Oxford. This will help scientists in the Departments of Biology and Experimental Psychology solve some of our major global challenges.

Legal & General entered into a £4bn partnership with the University of Oxford in June 2019, forming Oxford University Development (OUD) in order to provide

thousands of new homes for staff and students, incubator space for research and businesses and academic facilities such as the Life and Mind Building. This is the first project within the partnership to start being developed.

Wates have been appointed as the main contractor to deliver the NBBJ-designed Life and Mind Building, which is due to open in 2024. The building situated at the gateway to the Oxford’s Science Area, replaces the Tinbergen building which closed in February 2017. The building covers 25,000 sqm, set over two wings containing laboratory and office accommodation with a central atrium and lower floor teaching centre. The design will provide maximal flexibility and foster collaboration between departments.

The development looks to help fulfil Manchester City Council’s housing strategy in respect of ‘Living Longer, Living Better’ in adaptable age friendly homes which encourage health and well-being through increased independence, reduced social isolation and community involvement.

Gorton Mill House has been landscaped to provide a public, semi-public and private realm.

The public facilities are designed to be enjoyed by the local community, drawing them into the site and towards the hub area.

SPPARC APPOINTED FOR MAJOR NEW PROJECT ON SHAFTESBURY AVENUE, A FORMER RECORDING STUDIO FOR THE BEATLES Following the acquisition of the ODEON Cinema site at 135 Shaftesbury Avenue, SPPARC has been appointed as the architect for a cultural regeneration project in London’s popular West End theatre district. Returning to its former glory as the Saville Theatre, the site has been bought by Yoo Capital Investment Management (“Yoo Capital”), and will be reinvigorated by SPPARC whilst paying homage to the rich cultural heritage of the area.

Celebrating its 90th birthday this year, the listed building first opened its doors in October 1931, and has externally retained the majority of its grand original features including a 40m frieze designed by sculptor Gilbert Bayes that runs across its frontage and depicts ‘Drama Through the Ages.’

Whilst a notable cultural hub into the 1950s, its most famous period was during the swinging 1960s when The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein leased the theatre and used it to host live performances by the Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, The Who and Jimi Hendrix.

It is also the location where the Beatles recorded “Hello Goodbye” in 1967. In 1970, it was then internally converted to an ABC cinema and latterly to ODEON cinema.

UK GOVERNMENT GIVES GREEN LIGHT FOR £105.9M MENTAL HEALTH UNIT The UK government has given its final approval for Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) to build a brand-new mental health unit for adults in Manchester at North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH).

On 11 November 2021, the UK government formally approved the Full Business Case (FBC) for the development, to release the necessary capital investment – the final

approval needed to allow construction to begin. This follows approval of the FBC by both the Department of Health and Social Care, and NHS England & Improvement, on 30th September.

This is part of the Prime Minister’s commitment to upgrade 20 hospital, backed by £850m, to update facilities and equipment, helping improve patient care and ultimately save more lives.

Work has already begun to clear the development site, with demolition works due to start imminently, and scheduled for completion by the end of March 2022.

Construction work on the new building is due to start in April 2022.

Work on the new building is expected to start in 2022, with the new unit anticipated to be built and operational by 2024.

The avoidance of thermal bridging is extremely important for a number of reasons.

Any local heat loss will result in more energy being required to maintain the internal temperature of the building. STUDY REVEALS NEWLY DISCOVERED ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE CONTAINED IN ROME’S FAMOUS PALAZZO ALBERTONI SPINOLA After years of observation and study, architect Alex Rosman brings to light an exquisite perspective conceived

by Giacomo Della Porta, set inside the Palazzetto of the iconic Roman Renaissance residence More than four centuries on from his death, the talent of Giacomo Della Porta still echoes through the heart of Rome, the Eternal City.

His work continues to inspire awe, and the same can be said of this latest discovery made in the Palazzetto inside Palazzo Albertoni Spinola, overlooking Piazza di Campitelli.

Declared a site of historical and artistic interest by the Italian government little less than a century ago, the Palazzetto inside Palazzo Albertoni Spinola - a structure, made up of two perfectly integrated buildings – is also telling of the influence of Girolamo Rainaldi, then assistant to Giacomo Della Porta, who was also intrinsically involved in its development.

It is here that, during redevelopment work, architect Alex Rosman was able to observe the special perspective between the plan of the building and the layout of the outside square.

His observations newly noted the exquisite line of sight that flows from the Palazzetto towards the façade of the famous Santa Maria in Campitelli Church.

Giacomo Della Porta worked on the construction of Palazzo Albertoni Spinola up until his death in 1602. It was then that Rainaldi completed Della Porta’s vision, realigning the façade with the new layout of the outside square; an integration that gave birth to a

masterpiece of perspective which allowed for an optic effect initially overlooked and, to this day, still unexplainable. In fact, by following the orthogonality of the entrance tunnel, then walking backwards towards the main doorway of the Palazzo, the entrance of the Santa Maria in Campitelli Church appears to shift sideways until perfectly aligned when reaching the threshold entrance of the Palazzetto.

Another optic perspective relates to the roof garden which is visible from the entrance to the overpass on the first floor of the Palazzo Grande, even though it is hidden from the view, as it is the rear offshoot of the first floor of the Palazzetto and, therefore, far from the square.

Rosman presented his research and findings to industry experts and international media during ‘The Great Perspective by Giacomo Della Porta’ event which was live streamed from one of the lounges of Palazzo Albertoni Spinola. Along with Rosman, other speakers included architect Gaia Rebecchini, responsible for the redevelopment operations of the Palazzetto; Matilde Bartolotta Cingolani, owner of the residence and State USA Inc. Family Office representative and organiser of the event, and Anthony Majanlahti, historian, author and expert on Roman Families. The highlight of the event was to newly credit, Giacomo Della Porta, one of the most prolific architects and sculptors of Rome’s Renaissance period, for his involvement in the development of St. Peter’s Dome.

Light was shed on his involvement thanks to a plaque unveiled today, embedded in a

specific point of the dome - the top of the bronze sphere, facing east – which shows the name of Giacomo Della Porta attesting to his unmistakable role in the final development of this world-famous symbol of Christianity.

Based on what is historically known Della Porta developed the rest of the unfinished structure once Michelangelo died. He was also tasked with re-designing the overall project, because the original version would have most likely collapsed under the excessive weight of the dome. Thanks to his intervention, the project finally gained momentum and St. Peter’s Dome was finally finished when Della Porta began construction on the Palazzetto inside Palazzo Albertoni Spinola.

The photographic material shown as part of ‘The Great Perspective by Giacomo Della Porta’ event documents the existence of the plaque placed at the conclusion of the Basilica’s construction, where Della Porta himself engraved his own name and that of his son: JACOBUS A PORTA ARCHITECTVS / ALEXANDER EIVS FILIVS / PATRITII EQVITESQVE ROMANI 1593 . This documentation has revived the timeless creative, artistic and cultural contribution that Giacomo Della Porta bequeathed to the city of Rome.

Recent months have seen leaders of the Western World move the climate emergency to the top of their agenda. Not before time, some might say. However, it is unclear whether the benefits of taking a fabricfirst approach to building design loomed large during discussions at the recent COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. This is despite a demonstration home being specially-built for the event in order to showcase fabric-first, low carbon construction methods.

As household energy usage accounts for 40% of the UK’s CO2 emissions, the importance of addressing this significant statistic should not be underplayed. Taking a fabric-first approach to the design of walls, floors and roofs is a bedrock to a property achieving current energy standards, which in-turn is vital to reducing fuel consumption. A well-insulated home can futureproof a building against a further tightening of energy standards, as well as contribute to supressing fuel bills for millions of households.

Improving living standards for the health and wellbeing of residents in poorer UK communities is an issue Recticel is seeking to address through its membership of the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC). The non-profit organisation was set up nearly 50 years ago to promote the

benefits of safe and sustainable homes as a means of creating comfortable, affordable interiors. This is particularly aimed at occupants facing fuel poverty, a threat that’s been exacerbated for many households nationwide due to the current worldwide rise in energy prices.

The NHIC endorses taking a fabric-first approach to improving a property’s thermal performance, as does another highprofile industry body which counts Recticel as a member: the Sustainable Energy Association (SEA). With a membership comprising retailers, manufacturers, regulators and housing providers, all of which are committed to energy-saving measures, the SEA aims to combine building-level technologies and the wider energy system to achieve a secure, low-carbon future for the UK. Design to exceed energy standards To futureproof properties, however, we must look to exceed, rather than meet required levels of thermal performance. This will also offset an industry issue that is very current and involves new houses being built to old energy standards, an outcome that could thwart the government’s ambition to reduce carbon emissions in new homes by 31% - in comparison with current standards – as outlined in its Future Homes Standard proposal.

Going above and beyond in terms of insulating our homes through a fabric-first approach has physical and fiscal benefits for the property owner. It helps to create healthy, comfortable interiors by eliminating issues such as thermal bridging, which can lead to damp and mould formation. In time, as people become more aware of the cost and comfort benefits of owning a property which has been provided with an efficient thermal seal, including correctly-specified, high-performance insulation as part of a building’s fabric could add to its value. Indeed, as consensus amongst the populace grows for a need for more personal vigilance in reducing emissions to tackle climate change, an energy-efficient home is likely to appear more desirable to buyers wary of embarking on a costly retrofit to improve its thermal performance.

More than ever businesses and their employees are placing a greater focus on creating more sustainable working environments which are also designed to enhance employee wellbeing.

With this in mind, it is important that as we work to specify new or retrofit existing office spaces, we do so with a mindset centred around an employee-centric, sustainability focused future.

Here I want to explore the idea in a little more detail, highlighting how achieving a ‘practical’ workspace now, needs to be much more than just a few clusters of desks and indoor plants dotted around the office. We must create a working environment which works for our employees and enhances their experience in the workplace.

Fundamentally, although office design is an important part of delivering the future workplace, we need to carefully and effectively bring on board the people who will be occupying it from the outset before the planning even begins. As such it’s important we have a clear internal communications strategy up front, offering staff good reasons why they need to return to the office, how it will be done and what they can expect when they arrive.

Once this important, but often overlooked process has been undertaken, intentions have been communicated and a clear plan for getting staff back into the office has been defined, we can address the design and fit-out specifics.

Office designs for changing attitudes

Adapting to evolving workspace expectations In the summer we hosted a Roundtable of design sector experts, drawn together to discuss what the office of the future should look like.

Employee attitudes towards the workspace have changed considerably over the last 18 months, against the context of seismic global events. Whilst it’s completely understandable that many employers will be keen to get as many people back in the office as possible, particularly if they’ve made a considerable investment in renovating it, we need to take a sensitive, empathetic approach.

Particularly, they highlighted the need for purpose-driven and activity-based work areas, a practical, more intuitive approach designed to increase productivity. Moving beyond the traditional open-plan office with row-after-row of desk banks, they suggested features such as dedicated focus areas for ‘heads down’ work, including sitting or standing hot desks, to recreational break-out spaces, formal modular

meeting pods and informal collaboration spaces.

It was felt that this more versatile, flexible approach would be key to delivering maximum satisfaction for the returning workforce, dovetailing with new expectations associated with hybrid-working, whilst encouraging maximum productivity.

Importantly, the assembled panel were unanimous that the days of ‘cramming people in’ are over. It’s definitely not about filling a space with as many people as possible; particularly so in a post-COVID environment.

Wellbeing considerations Further, delivering a safer working environment goes beyond merely ensuring COVID-related safety protocol is in place.

Creating a healthier, happier environment will, in many cases, require better analysis of indoor air quality (IAQ), better HVAC systems, and designs that introduce more natural lighting.

Achieving good acoustics within a new office layout will also be vital to create a comfortable space in which to work.

Circular thinking Our interiors can now reflect our desire for a circular system which has no end-of-life but are repurposed as the requirements for the space evolve.

For example, as well as living walls, we’re already sourcing natural materials such as 100% recycled cotton and FSC® certified timber, which we use within our own Adaptable Wall range. Further, many of the materials we’re looking at have been recycled and can also be reused further down the line.

For the post-Lockdown, environmental and wellness conscious workers, we should think about delivering a more conscientious, intuitive workspace which will support them to be as productive as possible.

SPIRAL UK CREATE A 6 STOREY HELICAL STAIRCASE IN THE HEART OF LONDON Spiral UK were pleased to create an incredible helical staircase through the centre of a central London building, built to look like it was part of the original structure but standing out for its subtle detailing and strong form.

The Grade I Listed building at 21 St James’ Square was the work of The Ritz designers, Mewes & Davies, in the 1930s, who mirrored number 20 next door, emulating the work of esteemed British architect, Robert Adam, from the 1770s. In 2018 it went through a substantial and thorough redevelopment to become an exclusive and opulent office building.

One of the most expensive postcodes in the UK, the previous inhabitant list reads as a ‘who’s who’ of British history, with even the Queen Mother of Elizabeth II residing there from 1906 to 1920.

That is why Spiral UK were honoured to be contracted for the feature

staircase that winds its way up through the centre of the old building. A stair of this height is ambitious in itself, but this design was helical in nature, bringing with it a host of engineering and fabrication challenges. Helical stairs appear to be defying gravity as they arc through a space and cause tension points where they tether to a structure.

This particular design allowed for hidden support in the surrounding wall, the mild steel structure cantilevering out leaving an atrium space down the centre of the stair, adding drama and wow factor.

Gazing up from the ground floor, the dark balustrading contrasts with the white plaster work, accentuating the shape as it spirals upwards. The outer handrail is underlit by LED lighting cleverly concealed within the timber, mirroring the strip-lighting that curves around the edge of the soffits and reflecting off the brass nosing strips set into the vein cut Silk Georgette stone of the treads.

A study in luxury, the bespoke interior has a stylish, timeless elegance celebrating its historical significance and highlighting opulence and exclusivity. The fit out could not have been any higher in specification and the result is perfection. In the middle of this we installed our helical feat of engineering for private equity firm, Cinven, who made the upper 6 floors their headquarters.

Overall, we are very proud of the outcome and pleased to have been a part of the ongoing history of this iconic building.

CHESTER AND NORTH WALES BASED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT SAYS WE NEED TO RECONNECT WITH NATURE Land Studio, a leading landscape architecture and environmental design studio based in Chester and North Wales, says re-connecting people with nature is the key to tackling the impact of global warming.

Simon Richards, founder of Land Studio, spoke out as the Cop26 climate change conference got underway in Glasgow today.

He said: “Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution and the gradual urbanisation of the natural environment, we have become increasingly detached from nature.

“Sadly, too many of us have little or no understanding of the natural processes and cycles that surround us. It has led to a dangerous lack of understanding and care for addressing the problems we have created. For too long, we have been working against nature rather than with it.”

Simon, who recently spoke about climate change to the Henderson Colloquium and The Royal Society of Architects in Wales, believes that we need to champion nature in our communities, towns and cities.

He says that if we connect with natural process, we will enhance biodiversity, reduce flood risk, sequester carbon and create a more resilient food-producing landscape.

“At Land Studio, we embed nature into our designs, whether we are designing a landscape for a school, a residential street, or the reinterpretation of a National Trust property,” he said.

“The water cycle is a key component of our landscapes that also needs to be addressed and fully integrated into our built environment.

Enhancement of watercourses and de-culverting of drains are integral to healthy habitats and visible nature.

“The re-establishment of ancient water management practices through rain gardens, woodland management and, critically, the siting of new development help create a resilient natural environment whilst demonstrating to people the positive value of water in our landscapes.

“As a team, we recently visited RHS Bridgewater in Salford, where gardens have been designed and planted with a changing climate in mind.

“Strategies such as sustainable urban drainage have been incorporated there to naturally slow the flow of surface water across the site. Excess water can divert into areas of wet woodland and then filter into the lake near the visitors’ centre.

“Like we all need to consider, the RHS has used drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants in areas of the garden to better prepare it for the challenges of the changing climate.

“At Land Studio, we mostly use native plants when we’re specifying structural planting but we’re already specifying some exotic planting. Highly flexible, these plants are good at responding to unusual environments more quickly than our native plants.

“We are careful to choose ethical and environmentally sensitive materials with a low carbon footprint.

“We are also looking at calculating, reducing and offsetting our carbon in a meaningful and long-term way.

“Bio-diversity enhancement is important too so we’re looking at ways of creating bold and wild landscapes on a podium roof or installing a diverse planting palette based on ancient wild woods to enhance the setting of a glamping site.

“The health of our soils has long been a forgotten component in our landscapes but it forms an integral part of a successful rehabilitation of the natural environment and the enhanced sequestration of carbon.

“Linked to water management, the re-wilding of our catchment areas and their soils could be used as a real-world demonstration of the healing power of nature.

SIKA DEMONSTRATES EXTENSIVE FIRE SAFETY COMPLIANCE USING EXTENDED APPLICATION ASSESSMENTS, AS BROOF(T4) IS CONFIRMED FOR ALL SARNAFIL SINGLE PLY SYSTEMS Market-leading roofing manufacturer Sika has now completed Extended Application Assessments, testing to CEN/TS 1187:2012 Test method 4 for the entire Sika Sarnafil range of PVC single ply membranes. Subsequently, the most common Sika Sarnafil roof systems are now all classified under BSEN 13501-5 as BROOF(t4).

Working closely with independent global fire safety testing, inspection and certification company Warringtonfire – part of the Element Materials Technology Group – Sika has undertaken significant investment to attain the BROOF(t4) classification across all PVC membrane systems. This covers a range of permutations, including membrane type, thickness of PIR insulation, up to a 70-degree pitch and on any structural substrate.

A project spanning over two years’ work, Sika has invested a substantial amount of time and resource, utilising the EXAP standard CEN/ TS16459, which is available as a means of covering ranges of system permutations.

With Sika Sarnafil roof systems classified as BROOF(t4), we’re able to demonstrate and facilitate regulatory compliance for fire safety and satisfy current market demand.

Continuing, he explains how the update will affect specifiers: “Having this comprehensive BROOF(t4) classification, which indicates the highest external fire performance for roofs, means that specifiers and other stakeholders can use Sika Sarnafil on their roofing projects with a very high degree of confidence, assured that they’re complying with fire regulations.”

The only people who are permitted to undertake any degree of desktop/ extrapolation studies now are accredited, independent fire test houses.

This clearly removes the ability for anyone else to interpret or extrapolate the fire test data that may have been practiced in the past.

“We are not offering a view, we are offering wide-ranging test data and evidence that covers most permutations and situations – all with third-party verification, which is key. It’s a clear way forward in terms of mitigating roof fire risk and helping support those with the heavy responsibility of ensuring people’s safety,” he adds.

The project involved taking a huge existing body of fire testing reports into consideration and conducting further, more extensive physical testing. On completion of the programme, Sika now has independent test reports readily available on request.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN SECURITY FENCING

The type of fence specified depends on the application. For perimeter security, look

for steel fencing that has been designed to British Standards and is galvanised or zinc alloy coated for long-lasting protection. The main types of perimeter security fencing are welded mesh panels and vertical bar railings, and there are many variations of each. Both can offer good visibility and do not impede surveillance, are aesthetically pleasing, and offer excellent security against climbing and

attempted breaches. For higher security applications which require tested and certified protection against forced entry, look for LPS 1175 and Secured by Design approved versions.

For welded mesh panels, wire thickness is a key indicator of quality and compliance with the various British Standards. Welded mesh fence panels are almost always sold with a protective coating covering the wire.

Some manufacturers measure their wire diameters after the coating is applied. A smaller diameter wire with a heavier layer of coating will not provide the same structural strength and resistance to cutting as a product made from heavier diameter wire, even though both will be shown as being the same diameter.

Specifying fencing for safety and security purposes requires careful consideration of key components that will ultimately determine whether the chosen solution will stand the test of time, and serve the purpose it was designed for.

When choosing vertical bar railings, look for fencing with welded pale-through-rail construction. Pales that are affixed on the front of rails can be easily removed to create a gap in the perimeter, while pales which are inserted through rails and welded have no visible fixings and create an extremely secure fence.

For areas where children are present, such as play areas, the safety of the fencing is just as important as the play equipment within. Look for RoSPA approved designs, and fencing designed to BS EN 1176 with anti-trap properties. Fencing that can’t be easily vandalised is essential to avoid creating an unsafe scene of broken fencing and hazardous nails.

Where noise reduction is required in addition to security, look for tested acoustic barriers with an anti-climb flat profile, no gaps that would allow sound to escape or provide a foothold, and a solid construction to increase privacy. There are also LPS 1175 rated versions available, and these are an ideal choice for data centres.

The height of the fencing specified will depend on the type of property it is securing. School perimeters should ideally have fences between 1.8-2.4m, while high security sites such as data centres and utilities generally require fencing of at least 3 metres, and prisons may have at least 5m high fencing. Playgrounds will require much shorter fences at a minimum height of 1m to allow for independent play, without creating an intimidating environment.

With any type of fencing, the most vulnerable areas are the fixings and panel connectors. Screws, bolts and rivets should be tamper-proof to prevent them from coming loose and compromising security, or being removed manually to gain access.

Similarly, panel-to-post connectors should be concealed to ensure that whole panels cannot be removed from the posts. All fixings should be galvanised or stainless steel for added protection against corrosion.

With all of us trying to make more responsible, sustainable choices, it’s important to choose fencing that has a traceable supply chain, and offers a long guarantee. A 25 year guarantee demonstrates the manufacturer’s confidence in its products, and their dedication to providing reliable, long-lasting products that reduce their carbon footprint.

Gates should always be considered at the same time as fencing, and should match the type of fencing to guarantee consistency of security, as well as providing a polished appearance. There are many types of gates available, from swing gates, to tracked or cantilever sliding gates, or bi-folding gates that offer rapid access. Access control devices should be chosen to suit the type of gate and security level of the site, such as card readers, key fobs, digital pads, and key locks. To increase safety, separate gates should be installed for vehicles and pedestrians. This will also increase security - having smaller entrances for pedestrians reduces the need to open vehicular gates to allow them access, and avoids leaving large gaps in the perimeter. When specifying automated gates, it is essential that they are CE marked, and all DHF safety standards and guidelines should be strictly applied to ensure full safety compliance.

COUNCILS URGE MPS TO PREVENT BUILDING SAFETY BILL CREATING ‘TWO-TIER’ SAFETY SYSTEM The Local Government Association is urging MPs to back amendments to the Building Safety Bill – tabled by LGA Vice President Daisy Cooper MP - to protect the future residents of new buildings under 18 metres not covered by the scope of the Bill, The Building Safety Bill will establish a Building Safety Regulator (BSR) within the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to implement a new, more stringent, regulatory regime for higher-risk buildings.

These are defined as residential buildings, care homes and hospitals over 18m.

However, the Bill leaves residential buildings under 18 meters out of scope. This will create a two-tier system where buildings below 18 metres will face less rigorous safety regulations than buildings over 18 metres.

The current scope of Building Safety Bill would not have covered the Cube student residence in Bolton. In December 2019, the flammable cladding at the Cube rendered the only staircase untenable within half an hour and a resident was rescued from the top floor of the building moments before the flat from which she was rescued was destroyed by fire. This suggests that had the fire taken place later in the evening when more residents were asleep, it would probably have resulted in fatalities.

Architecture and design practice Red Deer [reddeer.co.uk] have reinforced what is most important to their business and continued to invest in their digital appearance over a static office.

“We strive against the static office” explains cofounder Lionel Real De Azua. “Marcel Proust called the static office ‘Habit’, which is the dulling of the senses through repetition.

When you’re in the same place, around the same people, doing the same thing, a bubble is created which isn’t good for creativity. We like to use technology to make the world our home, to travel the world and check in to our office remotely.”

The pandemic has highlighted some impracticalities of the ‘Work-From-Home’ culture but that shouldn’t mean we boomerang back into the office, it means we need a new culture of work that takes the best of what we have learned from the last two years.
