House Passes Bill To Extend Health Care Subsidies In Defiance Of Gop Leaders

politics aren’t the speeches or the press conferences — they’re the votes that weren’t supposed to happen.

This week, the U.S. House did something unusual. By a vote of 230–196, lawmakers moved forward on legislation to extend expired health care subsidies tied to the Affordable Care Act. What made it remarkable wasn’t just the policy, but the path it took to get there. Seventeen Republican members broke ranks and joined every Democrat, forcing a vote that party leadership had tried to avoid.

That vote only happened because a small group of Republicans signed a discharge petition — a procedural move that bypasses leadership and brings a bill straight to the floor. It’s a rare step, and a public rebuke of Mike Johnson, who had opposed bringing the measure up.

In a Congress often defined by gridlock and party discipline, this was a reminder that leadership power isn’t absolute.At the heart of the issue are enhanced tax credits that helped millions afford health insurance during the COVID-19 crisis. Those subsidies expired late last year after lawmakers failed to reach an agreement during the government shutdown. Since then, many families have seen premiums rise sharply, forcing tough choices between coverage and other

clear: the problem isn’t abstract. It’s personal, financial, and immediate for people across the country.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries put it bluntly, calling the affordability crisis “very real,” pushing back on comments from Donald Trump that downplayed the issue. Strip away the politics, and what’s left is a simple question: should access to health care hinge on procedural roadblocks and party loyalty, or on whether people can realistically afford coverage?This vote doesn’t solve everything. It doesn’t guarantee Senate passage, and it doesn’t end the larger debate over health care in America. But it does show something we don’t see often enough — lawmakers responding to pressure from realworld consequences rather than party talking points..Was this a rare moment of courage, a temporary alliance of convenience, or a sign that cracks are forming in the usual political lines? More importantly, what should matter most when it comes to health care — ideology, or affordability? Let’s talk about it…

About The Scholar & Artist: Dr. Ricardo Romo Dr. Ricardo Romo is a nationally respected urban historian, educator, and advocate for Latino culture and civil rights. From 1992 to 1999, he served as an Executive Officer and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. He left UT Austin in 1999 to serve as the fifth president of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). His eighteen-year tenure at UTSA, 1999 to 2017, is one of the longest in the University of Texas System. Romo led one of the fastest-growing public universities in Texas into a new era of academic and research excellence.

A native of San Antonio’s West Side, Romo attended Fox Tech High School, where he won three state championships in cross-country and track.

As the nation’s second-best miler, he earned a track scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin. Romo was the Southwest Conference Champion in the mile and three-mile and earned All-American honors. In 1966, he became the first Texan and first Latino to run a mile in under four minutes—a record that stood for 41 years. He earned a B.S. in Education from UT Austin in 1967, an M.A. in

History from Loyola Marymount University in 1970, and a Ph.D. in History from UCLA in 1975. His book, East Los Angeles: History of a Barrio, was published by the University of Texas Press and is currently in its ninth printing.

Romo began his career as a high school teacher in Los Angeles, where he taught one of the first Mexican American history courses in the country. He then held academic positions in Chicano Studies and History at California State University, Northridge; the University of California, San Diego (where he also served as Director of Chicano Studies); and the University of Texas at Austin. At UT Austin, he was an associate professor of history and an active member of the Center for Mexican American Studies. He also held visiting positions at UC Berkeley and the Stanford Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences.

During the late 1980s through the mid-1990s, Romo was active in Latino public policy research and civil rights. He served as an expert witness in the Garza v. County of Los Angeles, Cal., 756 F. Supp. 1298 (C.D. Cal. 1990). This case found that the Board’s 1981 redistricting plan violat-

ed Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause, resulting in the creation of a new Latino-majority district in which Gloria Molina was elected. Romo was also an expert witness in the Hopwood v. Texas case decided by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in 1996 and is formally cited as Hopwood v. Texas, 78 F.3d 932 (5th Cir. 1996).

Romo has received many honors throughout his career, including: Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies at Stanford; the prestigious Clark Kerr Award for Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education from the University of California, Berkeley; the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Chief Executive Leadership Award; the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the United States Army North; the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Texas Exes Alumni Association; and, the Isabel la Catolica award, the highest award given to non-Spanish subjects, bestowed by King Juan Carlos of Spain.

Romo has received numerous special appointments, including: by former President Bush and re-appointed by President

Obama to the White House Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics; as a U.S. representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization; as Vice Chair for the Federal Reserve Bank; as Chair for Southwest Research Institute; and as Vice Chair for Air University.

As UTSA’s president, Romo led the university through a period of tremendous growth. Under his leadership, enrollment rose by 68% to over 31,000 students, and doctoral programs expanded from three to 24. He launched “The UTSA Plan: A Roadmap to Excellence,” focusing on

educational access, research expansion, and institutional prestige. UTSA’s annual research expenditures had a six-fold increase during his tenure. The Texas Legislature recognized UTSA as an emerging Tier One research university under his leadership.

Romo is also active in the San Antonio community, serving on numerous nonprofit boards and generously contributing to scholarships, museums, and youth organizations. He and his wife, Harriett, have an extensive Chicano art collection, and they have donated art to seven museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

World Basketballl Day Por Franco Los Spurs de San Antonio y su filial Spurs Sports Academy (SSA), celebraron exitosa serie deportiva entre la comunidad juvenil, para la magna celebración denominada “World Basketball Day”.

Evento en el cual a nivel global se destacaron el desarrollo de habilidades, tanto en el baloncesto como,

la cultura y comunidad.

En boletín oficial informativo la gerencia del pentacampeón Spurs, indicó lo siguiente, en lo que fue su campo de entrenamiento “Spurs Fundamental Holiday Camp” presentado por su patrocinador Ledger, el cual incluyó todo el día, centrado en los fundamentos del baloncesto y conexión cultural, así como a la vez se incluyó actividades alusivas al World Basketball Day. Los participantes en el campo de entrenamiento y aprendizaje, en grupos realizaron estrategias del manejo del balón y pruebas defensivas.

Así como en la participación de juegos cortos dentro de la duela oficial. También participaron en clínicas de

discusión entre grupos, con temas de respeto, inclusión y el alcance global del baloncesto.

Cada participante recibió un jersey y un par de boletos de admisión para asistir a un partido local de Spurs en su sede Frost Bank Center.

Posteriormente SSA fue el anfitrión de otro magnífico evento denominado Spurs Jr. NBA/ Jr. WNBA League All-Star Weekend, patrocinado por Ledger, una experiencia al estilo del circuito NBA celebrado en el Spurs Impact Center.

Ahí se efectuaron comparaciones e intercambios de conmemorativas tarjetas de leyendas en ambos circuitos. Incluyendo tiros al aro y competiciones de habilidades.

Happy Birthday, Sweet Jesus J. gilberto Quezada

From the time I was a child, Christmas has always held a sacred place in my heart.

The lights, the hymns, the smell of candles in the church, and the quiet reverence of Midnight Mass all formed the rhythm of the season. Yet as the years passed, I began to realize that even with all the beauty and tradition, there was something simple—almost childlike—that I had never done. It was a gesture so small, yet so meaningful, that it surprised me to discover it had never been part of my Christmas celebrations.

Reflecting back to my elementary, middle school, and high school education at St. Augustine School

in Laredo, I do not recall ever singing the Happy Birthday song to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on His birthday—Christmas. Even though my classmates and I always admired the beautiful manger scene near the altar at St. Augustine Cathedral, and we had our own nacimiento in the classroom and at home, I could not recall a single moment when we sang “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. The same was true during my years at St. Mary’s University and throughout my adult life. Somehow, despite all the traditions, that simple gesture had never been part of our celebration.

As I grew older, I often found myself

longing for a deeper, more personal way to honor Christ’s birth.

The older I became, the more I understood that faith is not only lived in grand gestures or solemn rituals, but also in the quiet offerings of the heart. I began to wonder why such a tender expression of love—a birthday song for the One who gave us life—had never crossed my mind before. Perhaps God was waiting for the right moment to whisper this inspiration into my soul.

So now, I made up my mind. This year, on Christmas Day 2026, I am going to silently sing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus, offering it as a small but sincere gift to my Savior.

Happy Birthday to You Happy Birthday to You Happy Birthday, Dear Jesus Happy Birthday to You And as I prepare for that moment, I am looking forward to reflecting on the humility of Christ’s birth—the God of the universe choosing to enter the world as a fragile child. Singing “Happy Birthday” will feel like a way of acknowledging not only His divinity, but also His humanity. It will remind me that Jesus came close to us, walked among us, and invited us into a relationship that is intimate, personal, and filled with love.

As I finish the song

in the silence of my heart, I am looking forward to feeling a spiritual renewal. Christmas will take on a new meaning—one that will be tender, intimate, and profoundly spiritual. It will remind me that faith is alive, always inviting us to rediscover the beauty of God’s love in new ways.

This year, I am going to celebrate not only the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, but His birthday as well.

And in doing so, I am looking forward to discovering a new way to draw closer to Him—one simple song, offered with love.

Latinos Find Health Benefits and Social Interaction in Parks, Gardens, and Open Spaces

By Ricardo Romo, Ph.D With each new year comes the obligatory “resolutions.” Among the top five resolutions gathered in YouGov and Statista data was “exercise more,” which was listed among the single most common resolutions chosen by 25% of Americans. Second and third on the list were “be happier/ improve mental well-being” and “eat healthier.” As is often the case, finances were mentioned as a desire to “save more money.” Last among the top five was “improve physical health/ lose weight.”

I recalled from my weekly reading of articles on staying healthy that getting 150 minutes of moderate exercise and two days of muscle strengthening per week were recommended.

Increased physical activity is associated with numerous health benefits, such as reduced obesity, reduced osteoporosis, lower blood pressure, enhanced child development, and overall improved mental health.

The decision to exercise more and improve physical health led me to consult the excellent report, “The Power of Parks to Promote Health: A Special Report” by

Lisa W. Foderaro and Will Klein. These researchers found that parks promote health by serving as an ideal venue for physical activity, helping to reduce obesity and lowering the risk of numerous diseases. The report begins with a quote

by Dr. Howard Frumkin of the Trust for Public Land, who noted, “If we had a medicine that delivered as many benefits as parks, we would all be taking it.

Parks deliver cardiovascular benefits, fight loneliness, combat osteoporosis, counter stress and anxiety, and more.

And they do those things without adverse side effects and at minimal costs.”

Over the last decade, I have visited the top ten U.S. cities with the largest Latino population, which include, in order of size: New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, San Antonio, Phoenix, Chicago, Dallas, San Diego, San Jose, and Miami. I walked many times in Central Park and strolled on the public beaches of Los Angeles and San Diego. However, it came as no surprise to me that the Trust for Public Land has found serious disparities in access to the outdoors.

In an analysis of the 100 most populous American cities, neighborhoods where

most residents identified as Black or Hispanic had access to an average of 43 percent less park acreage than predominantly white neighborhoods.

The Special Report by Foderaro and Klein provided an excellent blueprint for improving the health of Latinos in urban areas. The report found that “Parks promote health by serving as an ideal venue for physical activity, helping to reduce obesity and the risk of numerous diseases.” Other similar research has found that art also counters stress and anxiety and can add to positive mental health.

My favorite park in San Antonio is Brackenridge Park near the headwaters of the San Antonio River. Founded in 1899, Brackenridge is one of the oldest public parks in the state of Texas. Children love the park because it offers ample outdoor areas, 300 acres, where they can run and ride bikes safely.

Public outdoor spaces offer many benefits for adults as well. A study conducted by several Scottish researchers found that parks contribute to community well-being.

The authors, who examined nearly 500 studies published over the past ten years, concluded that the benefits

of parks were substantial.

Their key findings revealed that “Physical health, mental wellbeing, and life satisfaction are all enhanced through access to and use of parks and green spaces.”

The researchers also found that “parks create important opportunities for social integration.”

I love Brackenridge Park because of its historical significance. Indian tribes lived in the current park area along the headwaters of the San Antonio River thousands of years ago. Archaeologists and historians have uncovered Indian campgrounds dating back 12,000 years along the river banks. The park is also adjacent to the Witte Museum, and school tours of the museum spill over to the picnic benches of the park. The giant cypress and oak trees of the park assure plentiful shade for young and old.

Dr. Kathleen L. Wolf, a nature scholar, noted that 40 years of research have demonstrated sufficiently that parks and green spaces “support human health and wellness.” It is a well-known fact that San Antonio has a large number of residents suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes,

heart disease, and respiratory problems. Parks, Dr. Wolf argues, are “particularly relevant” if they offer “walking and bike paths, and playing fields.”

After reading numerous reports about the benefits of parks and gardens, I invited my wife, Harriett, to join me in visiting the 40-acre San Antonio Botanical Gardens north of Downtown. [An easy ask since it is one of her favorite places in the city] Foderaro and Klein observed that “Spending time in natural areas, whether walking or reflecting in a garden, is a powerful strategy for improved physical and mental health. There is a vast body of evidence documenting the health benefits, such as reduced anxiety and depression”.

Foderaro and Klien also found that studies of both adults and children confirm the astonishing range of mental and physical health benefits contact with nature provides. Benefits include lower blood pressure, less anxiety and depression, better mental concentration, healthier child development, enhanced sleep quality, and more.

makes me wonder why some cities do so little to build or expand existing parks, gardens, and green spaces.

Additionally, the soft signals that tell people the park is safe and welcoming should be attended to. According to researchers, this means inclusive programming, art installations, and cultural events that make all groups feel welcome.

In the coming year, I plan to promote parks and outdoor spaces, additional cultural arts programming, ample parking, hiking trails, and walking paths. I would also like to see more family days, additional free admissions, inclusion of art and cultural activities, and outreach to wider audiences to encourage Latino families to enjoy parks, botanical gardens, museum grounds, and other public open spaces.

What If Diet Could Help Treat Depression?

New Research Shows Promise

Depression among college students has reached crisis levels.

Nearly half of U.S. college students report symptoms of depression, and about 15% say they’ve considered suicide. Onefifth take prescription antidepressants, and more than one-third receive mental-health counseling. As a professor at The Ohio State University, I’ve seen firsthand the toll this crisis takes on my students. But as a scientist studying lowcarbohydrate diets for over two decades, I’ve also seen something else: individuals following these diets often experience unexpected improvements in mental health. That apparent conn ectio n an d th e understanding that some of the documented

benefits of a ketogenic diet overlap with the p a t h o p h y siology of depression sparked my scientific curiosity -- and a first-of-its-kind pilot study. My colleagues and I recently set out to examine whether a whole-food, wellformulated ketogenic diet -- high in healthy fats, moderate in protein, and very low in carbohydrates -could support students being treated for major depressive disorder. The results were striking.

Over 10 to 12 weeks, participants followed a supervised ketogenic diet while continuing their usual counseling or medication. Of the 24 students who enrolled, 16 completed the program and maintained a state of nutritional ketosis -meaning their bodies had shifted away from relying

on carbohydrates for fuel to utilizing primarily fat.

By the end of the study, symptoms of depression had fallen by about 70% on two widely used clinical scales, while self-reported wellbeing nearly tripled.

Participants even performed better on tests of memory and mental speed -- skills that depression often dulls. This was a small, short-term study, but our preliminary findings are very encouraging.

They build on a growing body of evidence that ketogenic therapy -originally developed a century ago to treat epilepsy -- may have benefits for serious mental illnesses. In a pilot trial at Stanford, people with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia who adopted a ketogenic diet saw not only

improvements in blood sugar and weight, but also significant reductions in psychiatric symptoms.

And, in another trial at the University of Edinburgh, participants with bipolar disorder following this diet reported improvements in “mood, energy, impulsivity, and anxiety.” In light of recent pilot studies -- including our own -- and rising rates of depression among young people, continued investigation through larger, controlled trials is warranted to further clarify the link between diet and mental health.

It’s important to note that therapy and medication remain life-saving treatments for many patients with depression. But nutritional interventions could serve as powerful complements

-- enhancing or accelerating recovery for those living with mental health conditions. The crisis facing college students demands fresh, evidence-based solutions. Kids Invited To Join Free Earn-A-Bike Educational Programs San Antonio families are invited to enroll their child in free programs to teach them about healthy living, bicycle safety and give them the chance to earn a free bicycle for the new year. EarnA-Bike, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is hosting two upcoming community programs. The first program, in collaboration with Eastside Sprout Community Garden and Velocity TX, begins Tuesday, January 20, 2026. It will continue every Tuesday for 7-weeks from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Velocity TX, located at 1305 E. Houston Street. Currently, there are 10 spots left to join this program, with the deadline to register by Monday, January 19, 2026.

The second program, in collaboration with the YMCA and the City of San Antonio’s

Healthy Neighborhoods, begins Thursday, January 29, 2026.

It will continue every Thursday for 6-weeks from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Davis-Scott Family YMCA, located at 1213 Iowa Street.

Currently, there are 13 spots left to join this program, with the deadline to register by Wednesday, January 28, 2026. Although the programs are open to all San Antonio children ages 7 to 12, those living on the city’s east side are especially encouraged to register. The programs will have interactive lessons on several topics including — understanding where food comes from and making healthy choices, connecting environmental factors to mental health and well-being, using pedal power to make healthy smoothies and much more. who attend all weekly sessions and successfully complete the program will be invited to a Bike Build event in March — where they will build and keep their very own bicycle, as well as receive an accompanying helmet, light and lock. Irs Anuncia El Inicio De La Temporada De Impuestos De 2026

El Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS) anuncio el lunes 26 de enero de 2026 como la fecha de inicio de la temporada de presentación de declaraciones de impuestos de 2026 en Estados Unidos.

Este año entran en vigor varias nuevas disposiciones de la Ley de un Gran y Hermoso Proyecto de Ley (en inglés) que podrían afectar los créditos y deducciones tributarias.

Los contribuyentes tienen hasta el miércoles 15 de abril de 2026 para presentar y pagar los impuestos correspondientes. El IRS espera recibir alrededor de 164 millones de declaraciones de impuestos individuales para el año tributario 2025 y se anticipa que la mayoría de los contribuyentes las presentarán electrónicamente.

IRS.gov tiene herramientas y recursos en línea que los contribuyentes pueden usar antes, durante, y después de la presentación de sus impuestos federales. Ley de un Gran y Hermoso Proyecto de Ley (en inglés) contiene información que podría ayudar a reducir la deuda tributaria y, potencialmente aumentar el monto de los reembolsos.

Inscríbase a una Cuenta Trump. Padres, guardianes y otras personas autorizadas pueden establecer una nueva cuenta individual de jubilación para sus hijos. Visite trumpaccounts.gov (en inglés) para más información.

Abra una cuenta bancaria. El IRS insta a los contribuyentes a que establezcan una cuenta bancaria para recibir sus reembolsos tributarios a través de depósito directo, ya que el IRS está descontinuando gradualmente el uso de cheques de reembolso tributario por orden ejecutiva de la Modernización de pagos de una a otra cuenta bancaria americana.

Formularios 1099-K y 1099DA. Contribuyentes deben visitar IRS.gov para saber qué deben hacer si reciben uno de estos formularios.

El Formulario 1099-K, Transacciones con tarjetas de pago y redes de terceros, se usa para informar pagos recibidos por tarjetas de crédito, aplicaciones de pago y los mercados en línea. El Formulario 1099-DA, Activos digitales (en inglés), se usa para informar ganancias de activos digitales por transacciones de corredores de bolsa.

Contribuyentes deben informar todos los ingresos tributarios en sus declaraciones de impuestos federales, aun cuando no reciban un formulario. ¿Dónde está mi reembolso? La información sobre el estado del reembolso generalmente está disponible aproximadamente 24 horas después de presentar electrónicamente una declaración del año en curso, o cuatro semanas después de presentar una declaración en papel.

Esté alerta a estafas y fraudes tributarios. Los contribuyentes pueden aprender cómo prevenir, reportar y recuperarse de estafas de impuestos y del robo de identidad relacionado con impuestos en IRS.gov.

Elija un preparador de impuestos. Los contribuyentes deben revisar la guía del IRS para Elegir a un profesional de impuestos, que incluye consejos para seleccionar a un preparador confiable y cómo evitar preparadores poco éticos.
