About The Artist: Hector Garza

By Dr. Ricardo Romo Héctor Garza is a San Antonio–based contemporary artist and educator whose work bridges the visual languages of Mexican and American popular culture. Over the past fifteen years, he has developed a distinctive style that fuses Mexican and Chicano iconography with comic‑book aesthetics, social realism, and a deeply personal exploration of identity and community. His paintings— often rendered in oil, acrylic, and mixed media—celebrate the vibrancy of South Texas culture while inviting broader reflections on culture, faith, and heritage.

Born and raised in San Antonio, Garza draws inspiration from the folklore and traditions of the Southwest, including the visual richness of Día de los Muertos, sacred art, and storytelling rooted in borderlands experience. His compositions juxtapose cultural icons such as Frida Kahlo, calaveras, and lotería imagery with modern symbols from film, superheroes, and pop art. This synthesis produces a visual dialogue between the spiritual and the contemporary, the local and the global.

Garza earned his B.A. in Art with a Minor in Music from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2004. He later received an M.A. in Education from the University of Notre

Dame in 2008 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His dual path as artist and educator defines his practice—he teaches Fine Arts and Painting at Holy Cross High School of San Antonio and Sacred Art and Architecture at the Mexican American Catholic College, where he also contributes to visual liturgical projects and art education outreach.

His work has been exhibited in regional venues such as Centro Cultural Aztlan and REM Gallery and featured on platforms including Artsy.

The Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin includes his painting De Aquí y De Allá in its permanent collection, recognizing his contribution to the state’s evolving visual narrative. Institutions such as Our Lady of the Lake University have similarly celebrated him as a distinguished alumnus and acquired his work for their collections.

Garza’s art continues to evolve as a celebration of dual identity—Mexican and American, local and universal. Through his vibrant compositions and thoughtful teaching, he articulates a vision of cultural continuity rooted in the shared stories and faith traditions that define life in contemporary San Antonio.

SA Zoo Congo Falls Exhibit

By LPT Staff San Antonio Zoo marked a major milestone on Saturday, December 13, with the grand opening of Congo Falls, America’s newest landmark gorilla habitat.

The much-anticipated celebration began at 10:00 a.m. at the Zoo, located at 3903 N. St. Mary’s Street, welcoming guests to experience a world-class environment that signals a new era of innovation in habitat design, wildlife conservation, education, and animal care.

Congo Falls spans two immersive acres and stands as one of the most expansive and forward-thinking gorilla habitats ever created.

The space features three distinct habitats surrounded by lush landscaping, flowing water features, and enrichment zones designed to support both animal well-being and visitor engagement. A centerpiece of the habitat is The Mays Family Silverback Peak, the tallest gorilla tower in the world, rising more than 70 feet and offering the gorillas sweeping, unobstructed views of the San Antonio skyline.

During construction, the project revealed an unexpected connection to the city’s past when limestone was discovered from the same quarry that supplied stone for the construction of The Alamo more than 300 years ago. The finding adds a meaningful layer of history to Congo Falls, blending San Antonio’s heritage with a bold vision for the future

of conservation.

The celebration continued into the evening with a one-night-only 15-minute drone light show at 8:00 p.m. Hundreds of luminous drones filled the sky in a stunning tribute to gorillas, conservation, and the spirit of adventure. The event was free for Zoo members and available to all guests, drawing crowds for a truly unforgettable experience.

The evening concluded with the spectacular drone show featuring 400 drones lighting up the night sky, earning high praise for the San Antonio Zoo on a historic day for the city.

Holiday Celebration & Ribbon Cutting at Greenies Urban Farm

By Yvette Tello Senior Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert recently marked another milestone with the successful ribbon cutting of The Greenies Urban Farm, an incredible transformation in the heart of the Harvard Place Eastlawn neighborhood that has already begun making an impact across the Eastside.

The Greenies Urban Farm stands as a powerful example of community-driven change.

Formerly known as “The Goonies,” the once-neglected site was transformed at the request of neighborhood residents into a vibrant urban farm and education hub. Under Commissioner Calvert’s leadership, the project reflects a commitment to listening to the community and investing in long-term solutions that uplift families and future generations.

This project is the first of its kind in Bexar County, combining an urban farm with permanent offices and programming from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

By placing AgriLife faculty and staff directly within the neighborhood, residents now have direct access to hands-on education in agriculture, natural resources, youth development, and health. The farm operates as a living classroom, teaching practical skills such as food cultivation, sustainability, nutrition, and environmental stewardship.

WestCare Texas partnered with Commissioner Calvert to bring The Greenies to life, aligning the project with its mission of “Uplifting the Human Spirit.” With decades of experience and more than 130 programs nationwide, WestCare’s involvement ensures the farm will continue to serve as a source of education, support, and opportunity. Additional partners included Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Nunnelly General Contractor, and the DSABC Foundation.

The ribbon cutting and holiday celebration welcomed families of all ages and featured a tree lighting, live entertainment, photos with Santa and ponies, children’s activities, complimentary treats, and a local vendor market.

Community leaders, including Judge Peter Sakai and WestCare Texas Regional Vice President Francine Prosser-Johnson,

joined Commissioner Calvert in celebrating the moment.

The successful opening of The Greenies Urban Farm marks another milestone in Commissioner Tommy Calvert’s legacy of communitycentered leadership, turning a former eyesore into a lasting asset that strengthens food access, education, and opportunity in Bexar County.

Flor de Noche Buena/The Poinsettia And A Little Christmas Trivia

Gilberto Quezada Every year during the Christmas season and while growing up in the Barrio El Azteca in Laredo, Texas, during the 1940s and 1950s, Mamá would obtain many plants that she called flores de Noche Buena to decorate her little altar to her beloved virgencita-Our Lady of Guadalupe. This annual event became a family tradition. Thus, during the month of December, as a little boy, I became aware of the flor de Noche Buena.

And, while attending St. Augustine School and during the Christmas season, the nuns referred to this plant as Poinsettias. Interesting, I thought. I had learned a new Anglo nomenclature for Mamá's favorite plant. At that point, I was just content to know the English term. Little did I know that many years later, I would be in for a big surprise.

The word, "poinsettia," did not reappear in my consciousness until the fall of 1969, when as a graduate student at St. Mary's University, I took a course with Dr. Hubert J. Miller on the history of Mexico and the Caribbean. In taking copious notes, I learned that in 1825, President John Quincy Adams appointed Joel Roberts Poinsett as the first United States Minister (Ambassador) to Mexico, a diplomatic post he held until 1829.

Joel Robert Poinsett was forty-six years old and had experience as a politician, a states-

man, and a diplomat in South America. He was well educated and spoke Spanish and four other languages. Mexico had achieved its independence from Spain four years earlier and President Guadalupe Victoria needed much useful advice and guidance. Actually, President Adams sent Mr. Poinsett to Mexico with specific instructions to help the fledging nation.

Mr. Poinsett was also an accomplished amateur botanist, and one day, he visited a colonial town south of Mexico City known as Taxco de Alaracón, located in the Mexican state of Guerrero. It was here, during the month of December, that he saw the beautiful red leaves of the flor de Noche Buena and fell in love with it.

He was so attracted by the colorful leaves that he sent them to his family farm in South Carolina, to his friends, and to botanical gardens. By 1836, seven years after Joel Roberts Poinsett left Mexico, the plant was very popular in the United States and in Europe. During this same year, the Scottish botanist, Robert Graham, classified the plant as a new specie and named it Poinsettia in honor of Joel Roberts Poinsett for introducing it to the U.S. Christmas is more than twinkling lights and joyful carols— it's a tapestry woven from centuries of tradition, literature, and art. 1645 – John Milton’s Hymn on the Morning of Christ’s Nativity was first printed in 1645. This poetic masterpiece blends theological reverence with lyrical beauty, capturing the spiritual essence of Christmas in verse that still resonates today.

1835 – The first known illustration of a Christmas tree appeared in 1835. Though the tradition originated in Germany, this visual helped popularize the custom in England and America, where decorating evergreens became a cherished holiday ritual.

1841 – The first printed illustration of Santa Claus descending a chimney was published. This whimsical image

1863 – Political cartoonist Thomas Nast created the first illustration of St. Nicholas in 1863. His depiction laid the foundation for the modern image of Santa Claus, complete with a jolly demeanor, red suit, and a sleigh full of toys.

The Virgin Guadalupe, Matachines, and Chicano Art Traditions

By Ricardo Romo, Ph.D On Friday, December 12, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on San Antonio’s Westside hosted three distinct Matachines dance groups in honor of the feast day of the Virgen de Guadalupe. The dance is a blend of medieval and early modern Spanish and pre-conquest Aztec dance traditions.

Trinity Literature Professor Norman Cantu’s research shows that the Aztecs had their own version of the Matachines’ performance, noting that the dance varied depending on the identity and traditions of the performers.

Cantu wrote, “The Azteca story revolves around a young virgin, Malinche, who tries in vain to get someone to slay the evil persona representing paganism.” El Monarca, the leader of the Matachines, eventually drives evil away.

The killing of this villain symbolizes the acceptance of Christianity.

Mexican scholars believe the Spanish introduced the Matachines dance to Indigenous communities as a way to teach Christian doctrine through performance.

In 1531, according to Catholic teachings, the Virgin Mary appeared in Mexico to a poor Aztec Indian named Juan Diego, and she told him to call her Our Lady of Guadalupe.

in the conquered territory.

In justifying their authority to govern, these Espanoles declared themselves superior to the Creoles, the children of Spanish parents born in Mexico. The Espanoles expressed condescending views of racial mixing and especially viewed themselves as superior to the Indians and those of mixed races.

The French intellectual Lafaye linked the apparition of La Virgen de Guadalupe to the emergence of a Mexican national consciousness. In essence, he viewed the incorporation of Catholicism made possible by the apparition not only as serving as a beginning of religious transformation but also as a key to the formation of

the identity of the Mexican nation. The earliest mention of La Virgen de Guadalupe in Texas occurred in 1689 when Alonso de León, the Spanish governor of Coahuila, discovered and named the river 30 miles north of San Antonio the Río Guadalupe after La Virgen de Guadalupe.

Mexican historians note that La Virgen de Guadalupe became a unifying symbol for Mexican identity and nationalism during the Mexican Independence era [1810-1820].

This symbolism resonated with Mexican Tejanos during the wars against Spanish rule in Texas, such as in the Battle of Medina in 1813, one of the major battles against the Spanish forces fought near San Antonio. Over the last hundred years, La Virgen de Guadalupe has also been considered a protector of migrants, a role of immense significance today when migration is considered a pressing national issue.

The veneration of the Brown Virgin grows every day.

The Mexico City Basilica, dedicated to the Virgin de Guadalupe, is the second most visited church in the world after the Vatican. In 2019, the Basilica in Mexico City recorded more than 11 million worshipers and visitors. Many of the Mestizo and Indian worshipers approach the Basilica on their knees, seeking respite and healing or offering gratitude for miracles bestowed

by La Virgen. Visitors arrive by the thousands daily to pray before the tilma of Juan Diego with the image of La Virgen de Guadalupe. In the U.S. Southwest on December 12th, many Latinos, and especially Latina/Mexican immigrant women, continue to celebrate the Brown Madonna with rosary prayers and red roses.

After viewing the Matachines dances at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, where my parents were married and I was baptized, my wife, Harriett, and I drove across town to the Centro Cultural Aztlan to view the annual art exhibit dedicated to the Feast of the Virgen de Guadalupe.

A large crowd gathered inside the spacious galleries. The Centro had invited vendors to sell their handmade objects in the hallways. In another large room, Mi Tierra Mexican Restaurant served chicken mole in a brown sauce, tamales, frijoles, and arroz.

Pan Ducle was the desert.

This year’s art selection with the Virgen de Guadalupe theme was stunning. I stopped twice to see the wonderful artistry of Raul Servin, Theresa Ibanez, Hector Garza, Monica

Saldana, Xavier Garza, Maria Ramirez, Alfredo Rodriguez, Manola Ramirez, Cris Escobar, Angelica Gomez-Mayorga, and others.

I marvelled at the Floral installations of Henry de Leon and a breathtaking gown crafted with harmonious and colorful sequins by Bianca ArguellezGarcia and her mother, Rosemary T. Arguellez. For the past twenty-five years, Centro Director Malena CidGonzalez has curated an annual Virgen de Guadalupe art exhibit. As she greeted visitors and explained the significance of major works, I marveled at her mastery of Chicano art and her passion to help Chicano artists find a home to exhibit and sell their work. December 12th was a successful day for celebrating Latino traditions and faith.

Palo Alto College marked a major milestone in workforce education

By LPT Staff Palo Alto College marked a major milestone in workforce education with the official chartering of its new Association of Supply Chain Management (ASCM) Student Chapter, a distinction held by only a limited number of community colleges nationwide. The chartering ceremony took place Tuesday evening, December 16, 2025, in the Legacy Room at the Ozuna Library and Learning Center, bringing together students, faculty, and community supporters to celebrate the achievement. Through its Logistics Program, Palo Alto College successfully met all requirements to establish the ASCM Student Chapter, joining a select group of institutions that includes UTSA, St. Mary’s University, and Texas A&M University–San Antonio. The chapter launched with 25 student members, reflecting growing interest in logistics and supply chain careers among community college students.

ASCM is one of the world’s most recognized professional

organizations in supply chain management and logistics, known for advancing ethical, efficient, and sustainable global supply chains. With an on-campus chapter, Palo Alto College students now have direct access to industry leaders, professional networking opportunities, and pathways to earn industry-recognized certifications that strengthen career readiness.The establishment of the ASCM Student Chapter underscores Palo Alto College’s continued innovation in logistics education and its commitment to expanding access to high-impact, workforce-driven experiences. By connecting students to professional organizations typically associated with four-year universities, the college is helping position its graduates for long-term success in a rapidly evolving industry. Voter Turnout Is Not Optional: San Antonio Must Act Now

By LPT STaff San Antonio’s voter turnout is at an all-time low, and treating reform as something that can be delayed is no longer acceptable. While some City Council members appear comfortable dragging their feet, low participation is not a theoretical problem — it directly affects representation, accountability, and trust in local government. Year

after year, May municipal elections produce single-digit turnout, allowing critical decisions about our city’s future to be made by a very small group of voters. That reality weakens democracy and leaves too many voices unheard. Moving city elections from May to November in odd-numbered years is a clear, actionable step forward. While turnout is highest when elections

align with presidential or midterm races, November elections still consistently outperform May elections. Voters are more engaged, more informed, and more likely to participate in November. The month matters, and ignoring that fact only prolongs the problem. Cost savings should not be the sole motivation, but efficiency matters. Fewer standalone elections mean less voter fatigue

and more streamlined election operations.

Even when savings are not guaranteed, consolidating election dates better serves voters and election administrators.

Some concerns have been raised about extending current council terms by a few months.

Yet there has been no widespread public outrage over this issue. If a short extension leads to higher turnout, stronger legitimacy, and a

healthier democracy, it is a reasonable and responsible tradeoff. Low turnout is not something we should accept or postpone addressing.

Civic participation is the foundation of good governance, and leadership requires action.

Changing the election month will not solve everything, but refusing to act guarantees continued disengagement.

San Antonio must move forward.

elecciones municipales en mayo registran una participación de un solo dígito, permitiendo que decisiones críticas sobre el futuro de la ciudad se tomen por un grupo muy reducido de votantes.

Esa realidad debilita la democracia y deja demasiadas voces fuera del proceso. Mover las elecciones municipales de mayo a noviembre en años impares es un paso claro y viable. Aunque la mayor participación ocurre cuando las elec-

ciones coinciden con contiendas presidenciales o de medio término, las elecciones en noviembre siguen superando a las de mayo.

Los votantes están más atentos, más informados y más dispuestos a participar en noviembre. El mes importa, y ignorarlo solo prolonga el problema. El ahorro de costos no debe ser el único factor, pero la eficiencia sí importa. Menos elecciones independientes significan menos fatiga

electoral y procesos más ágiles. Incluso cuando los ahorros no están garantizados, consolidar fechas beneficia tanto a los votantes como a quienes administran las elecciones.

Se han expresado preocupaciones sobre extender los mandatos actuales por algunos meses, pero no ha existido una reacción pública generalizada en contra. Si una extensión breve genera mayor participación, mayor legit-

imidad y una democracia más sólida, es un intercambio razonable y responsable. La baja participación no es algo que debamos aceptar ni postergar. La participación cívica es la base de un buen gobierno, y el liderazgo exige acción. Cambiar el mes de las elecciones no resolverá todo, pero negarse a actuar garantiza que la desconexión continúe.

San Antonio debe avanzar.

RUBY CITY ANNOUNCES A YEAR OF CONNECTION, CREATIVITY & CONTEMOPRARY ART San Antonio, TX (DEC. 17, 2025) — Ruby City’s upcoming winter/spring season offers a dynamic slate of free, communitycentered programs followed by new fall exhibitions that invite visitors of all ages to engage with contemporary art in meaningful ways.

Highlights include a special screening of ASCO: Without Permission, presented with MonteVideo at Slab Cinema Arthouse, followed by a conversation with artist Kathy Vargas and scholar Dr. Ellen Riojas Clark moderated by Ruby City Director, Elyse A. Gonzales. Monthly meditation sessions led by Pamela Martinez will also continue, offering a restorative start to each third Sunday.

Artist-focused programming includes a walkthrough and reception for Bedroom Paintings on view at Ruby City through May, 10, 2026, with artist Joey Fauerso and Director Elyse A. Gonzales, alongside creative workshops such as dreamwork sessions with Leigh Baldwin and a Slow Looking + writing program led by poet Violeta Garza.

From February 4, through March 6, Ruby City will participate in San Antonio’s Ekphrastic Poetry Competition, inviting writers to respond to Daniel Rios Ro-

driguez’s painting Norma, on view in Studio at Ruby City, as part of his exhibition Open This Wall on view through October 4, 2026.

For the first time, Ruby City will also participate in a weekend of art journalism and literary programming connected to the 2026 San Antonio Book Festival in April. Ruby City will host Ben Luke, an internationally respected art journalist, broadcaster, and author known for making contemporary art accessible through thoughtful conversation. As host of The Art Newspaper’s podcasts A brush with… and The Week in Art, and author of What Is Art For?, he explores artists’ creative processes, cultural influences, and lived experiences. His work closely aligns with Ruby City’s mission to welcome broad audiences into meaningful engagement with contemporary art and the ideas that shape our world. The spring season will close with Music in the Park in partnership with KRTU, in May spotlighting contemporary jazz.

In the summer, (June) Ruby City will present a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed Johannesburg-based artist Tracey Rose who is known for her

fearless explorations of race, gender and power.

The exhibition will feature 50 drawings by the artist.

The fall season will continue to offer free and engaging programs and events along with the opening of a major group exhibition in Ruby City’s architecturally striking galleries. This large-scale group show will feature works by female artists who explore, and counter tropes associated with what has historically been defined as the feminine experience. Works will include loans and those from the Linda Pace Foundation Collection, Ruby City.

Rooted in Linda Pace’s commitment to championing women artists, the exhibition brings together drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and video .

The 2026 year concludes with Christmas Trees (2005–2006) by beloved now deceased San Antonio artist Chuck Ramirez, installed in Studio at Ruby City. Commissioned by Linda Pace with the directive to make them excessive, stating, “More is more!” Ramirez’s exuberant artificial Christmas trees are decorated using lights, paint, beads, ornaments and unexpected found materials such as feather

boas or artificial plants.

They blur the line between decoration and fine art, offering a joyful, humorous and thought-provoking reflection on transformation, excess, and the beauty of the everyday.

The public is invited to experience a year of connection, creativity, and contemporary art at Ruby City.
